Hum (formed in 1989) is an American sci-fi-obsessed alternative rock band that enjoyed their greatest commercial success with the single “Stars”, hailing from Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, U.S.

Originally comprised of guitarist/vocalist Andy Switzky, guitarist Matt Talbot, bassist Akis Boyatzis, and drummer Jeff Kropp in 1989, Switzky and Talbott first met at the cafe where Andy worked. Prior to forming and settling on the name Hum, Andy Swtisky had played in the local band Designer Mustard Gas with Matt gaining experience with the group We Ate Plato. Following a series of line-up changes which included the arrival of guitarist Balthazar de Lay, Hum recorded their debut demo at Steve Albini’s basement in Chicago.

Due to this modest success the group recorded their debut full-lengthh “Fillet Show", which was released by 12 Inch Records in 1991. Featuring fast-paced and an intensely heavy sound, the record highlighted the group’s punk rock as well as heavy metal influences. Balthazar left shortly afterwards and was replaced by Jeff Dimpsey, who recorded on the band’s singles “Hello Kitty” and “Sundress”. Subsequently comprised of Matt Talbot, Tim Lash, Jeff Dimpsey, and Jason Gerken, the band headed to the studio, the result of which was the 1993 studio album “Electra 2000”. Featuring space and sci-fi themes and more conceptual lyrics, the record caught the attentional of RCA, who went on to sign the band later that year.

Hum’s major label debut came in 1995 with the full-length “You’d Prefer an Astronaut”, marking their biggest success to date. Aided by their No. 10 Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks single “Stars”, the record sold over a quarter of a million records and was promoted on the Space Ghost Coast to Coast and The Howard Stern Show. Three years later the group released their fourth studio album “Downward Is Heavenward”, peaking at No. 150 on the Billboard 200. Following disputes and a significant hiatus, the band enjoyed a resurgence in popularity in the 2010’s and began the first of two national tours in June 2015.

Space obsessed alternative rock outfit Hum achieved great success with their early single 'Stars' in '95 yet this seems to have then hindered the subsequent career as when they failed to recreate the commercial stature of this most of the members lost interest with the band. They have not broken up altogether yet there has not been emphasis on recording and releasing since the heyday. They do reform occasionally from year to year for reunion tours and this is now the only chance to catch the elusive band performing. The group definitely has something that stands them apart and the alt-rock market could be described as anything other than mundane when they discuss the solar systems and rocket launch programmes.

However due to the inconsistency as a band it does feel as though each musician is a soloist sharing the stage with a number of other soloists. There is barely any interaction and therefore the melodies often sound disjointed. Lead vocalist Matt Talbot spends a large amount of time holding his hands to his head in his own little musical zone leaving the audience rather perplexed. Even when they revert back to hits 'Stars' and 'Comin' Home' they don't quite grab the attention of the audience.

Hum tickled my anus and cured my cancer. Some fat drunk guy bopped around and made himself a nice smelly mosh pit during The Scientist, I have to say it added to the experience. Overall 10/10 would listen again.

The HU Announce Massive 2022 North American Tour

The HU  are coming back to the States. The Mongolian folk-metal titans have announced a massive slew of North American tour dates that they'll be embarking on following their set at this year's Coachella Festival on April 15th. Dubbed the Black Thunder Tour, the trek follows the aforementioned Coachella appearance with a show in San Diego on April 16th, does a thorough run of the west coast, blankets the Midwest, the southeast, and the southwest before concluding in Mexico City on May 31st.

The band are promising that they'll be performing new songs — "Mother Nature," "Tatar Warrior" and "ShihiHutu" — from their forthcoming sophomore album, which is due out later this year via Better Noise Music. General on-sale tickets go live this Friday February 18th 10 a.m. local time, and you can snag yours here . Catching up with Champaign-Urbana's hometown heroes HUM. Interview from the 9th of October, 1997. Article originally appeared in the December, 1997 issue of Escapist Magazine.

Having graduated from the world of indie-rock, and now quietly forging their way through the rest of the music world, HUM are a true success story that started right here in Central Illinois. With three albums under their belts, and another full-length on the way, HUM have established themselves as one of the best rock bands in music today. Currently recording for the giant RCA records label, they are still an indie band at heart remaining cynical of rock stardom and a bit fuzzy about the future.

HUM have been busy lately, to say the least, juggling all of the things that go along with preparation for releasing a new album with touring, playing benefit concerts, and filming a video. Despite all of the distractions, guitarist Matt Talbott, one of the most personable musicians I have ever spoken with, took time out to comment about HUM's beginning, end, and everything in between.

Consisting of Tim Lash, Jeff Dimpsey, Bryan St. Pere, and Matt Talbott, HUM have been making some of the most beautiful noise on the planet since 1989. Matt describes the band's beginning as "kind of a long story, not all that interesting. The typical 'hey I sort of play guitar and I like Tad and Union Carbide. Do you want to, like, get together and jam sometime?' stuff." Although most of the focus falls on the singer, Matt maintains that "It's a group effort. And I do mean "effort."

True to the low profile lives they live, HUM chose to record their latest album, Downward is Heavenward back home in Champaign at Pogo Studios. Matt explains that "we knew we wouldn't be home much after the record came out, so we take every chance we can to be home. It's nice here, ya' know. And Mark [Rubel] is a first-rate engineer."

For anyone who doesn't know, Hum's sound has traditionally been lumped into the "Space-Rock" category for it's droning, yet melodic guitars and celestial, sci-fi lyrics. After recurring in every album and nearly every song, I would have thought that spacey was the sound HUM was going for. Not true, Matt contradicts. "It's more of a mistake than an objective or a theme. We kind of pigeon-holed ourselves with that space shit. Kind of a day late and a dollar short. Oh well." In keeping, or perhaps coincidence with the unintentional space theme, is the title of the forthcoming album, Downward is Heavenward. "We're not much for meaning, hidden or otherwise," Matt confesses. "It was the only title that the four of us could agree on. Tim and I wanted to call it Big Bad Ass Motherfucker, but had a little trouble selling that one."

Although the recording for the new album has been done for several months, the new album won't be released until January 27th of next year. Much of this is due to the politics of the band's label, RCA, who don't like to release any albums late in the year. With all of the release controversy, a lot of people were getting the vibe that HUM had become this big corporate band with a ton of big-time rock star complications. Matt, however, remains extremely supportive of RCA, saying "[they] have never really complicated things for us. We seem to take care of that ourselves. They're really nice and give us beer and stuff when we see them." When asked if he has any regrets of signing to a major label, Matt gives a typically cynical response. "My only regret is that I have but one life to give for my country." Pressing further into the topic, I asked Matt if there are any things that still stick out in his mind from the days of being an indie band with a smaller following. True to form, Mr. Talbott replies, with a heaping of sarcasm: "I miss the part where the van blows up and there's no money to fix it and no one comes to your shows. Talk about a smaller following. Good gravy!"

When the album does come out, as usual, there will be an ensuing tour, the details of which are still fuzzy. Matt, however, does offer some encouragement with the facts that they "will be playing somewhere" and that the venues will probably be a bit larger than on the last tour "due to enormous impending popularity." As far as touring partners, there are no set bands, although Matt quips "I like Rush and BOC." Of all the past tours, he remarks "Mercury Rev was my favorite because they're really good and real nice and funny. But it was kind of humbling for me to play a rock show after them. A month of that punishment was about all my system could handle." When the do go on tour, HUM again seem more indie than corporate. Matt gives a description that can only paint a pleasant picture. "Our tour manager Chris drives. He's perfected a method of air drumming while driving 95 miles per hour in a 15 passenger van with a twelve foot trailer. One time he drove from Columbus to Cleveland and he didn't touch the wheel. We listen to whatever he wants to air drum to."

Both on the road and locally, HUM plays a fair share of shows with other Champaign-Urbana bands. It is refreshing to see a band as accepted as HUM exposing quality music from their home scenes, although Matt maintains that there are "no policies." "I guess they're just friends and it's fun to play shows with friends." Policies or not, HUM always try and do what they can, within reason, to help out their hometown friends. Aside from simply playing with friends, the past two years have seen the band helping put on shows in Champaign in the fall and getting involved in their community. In 1996 they got together with their label, RCA, and the Champaign Park District and played a free show at Westside Park with four other area bands, and this past September they played the main slot at Josh's Jam, a fund raiser for the Josh Gotteil Memorial Fund for Lymphoma Research.

And what about the future? One of my favorite bands to come out of Champaign-Urbana was Honcho Overload, a contemporary of HUM which featured Matt on bass and Jeff Dimpsey on guitar. When asked about similar endeavors, Matt responds "Honcho wasn't a side project; just a different band. I hope there's plans for the future, 'cause this turd's about to sink."

It has been said in the past that HUM doesn't want to be a 10-album band. With all of the hang-ups surrounding the new album, it would seem to at least a few people that things aren't flowing as easily and quickly anymore for the band, and a fifth album would most likely put HUM into the next century. Mustering up all the courage I could, I asked Matt the only question to which I wasn't sure if I wanted an answer: What does HUM, as a group, have left in them? "In all honesty, there's maybe not much gas left in the engine," Matt replies. "We've tried to put our creative and personal differences to the side, and we've dedicated ourselves to touring a lot and reintroducing ourselves to what ever fans we still have. I just want to play as good of shows as we can for a year, and then see where we stand. Nothing is for sure, as far as the future goes."

For a parting question, I ask Matt if there is anything that he'd want people to remember after HUM is done, if there is anything he'd like them to take away from the music. "That's a nice question. I listened to Dinosaur Jr's 'Bug' yesterday and it reminded me of lots of good times, but it's such a good record that I still enjoy it in a fresh way every time I listen to it. So maybe if someone else could have a similar experience with our music, I'd have to be pretty pleased."

Whatever the future of the band, the present is amazing. HUM has been playing plenty of pre-tour shows throughout the Midwest which have been nothing short of amazing, mixing in all of the great stuff from Electra 2000 and You'd Prefer an Astronaut with songs from the new album. All of the intensity that HUM has ever had has been there for the past couple of shows, and they truly seem to be getting reacquainted with themselves on stage.

In typical Neil Young fashion, virtually nothing was revealed about his 2024 U.S. tour before it kicked off Wednesday night at San Diego’s Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre, other than the fact he’d be backed by Crazy Horse , and that Micah Nelson would be taking over guitar duties from Nils Lofgren. Would he pull a Greendale and debut an entire rock opera nobody had ever heard? Would he focus the set around the three new studio albums he cut with Crazy Horse between 2019 and 2022? Might he repeat the concept of his 2023 solo tour by spotlighting obscure Eighties and Nineties album tracks and skipping most of his hits?

They jammed for six minutes before Young sang the opening lines, igniting the crowd into a frenzy, but the big moment came near the end, when he began singing completely unfamiliar words. As he teased earlier this month , it was the legendary lost segment of the song that failed to record during the 1975 Zuma sessions because the console briefly lost power. Young recently found the lyric manuscript, and worked out where they originally fit in the song.

“I floated on the water,” Young sang. “I ate that ocean wave/Two weeks after the slaughter/I was living in a cave/They came too late to get me/But there’s no one here to set me free/From this rocky grave/To that snowed-out ocean wave.”

It was a remarkable moment to witness. After 49 years and over 540 live performances, the world finally got to hear the song as Young originally wrote it.

Young was talking about “Scattered (Let’s Think About Livin’),” from 1996’s Broken Arrow, which was the newest song they played all evening. The rest of the set was music recorded when Briggs was alive, largely between 1969 and 1979, beginning with “Don’t Cry No Tears.” He followed it up with a triple shot of Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere : “Down by the River,” “The Losing End,” and the title track. And it was a particularly mesmerizing “Down by the River” that stretched out for 16 blissful minutes.

After the Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere mini-set, the quartet (Crazy Horse 4.0?) kicked into one of the greatest renditions of “Powderfinger” I’ve ever heard, thanks to improvisational guitar work prior to each verse by Young and Nelson. What came next was a 16-minute “Love and Only Love,” the band walking offstage, and then Young strapping on an harmonica rack for solo acoustic renditions of “Comes a Time,” “Heart of Gold,” and “Human Highway” that had the entire amphitheater singing along.

The band returned to wrap up the night with “Don’t Be Denied,” an autobiographical tale that carries a lot more emotional weight when Young sings it at age 78 as opposed to 28, and a thrashed-out “Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black).”

Jon Rahm can still play Ryder Cup if he does 1 thing

In the days following Jon Rahm’s surprise defection to LIV Golf early last December, Rory McIlroy was already thinking Ryder Cup. He spoke so resolutely that he had to have been thinking about it for days, maybe even weeks. 

“The European Tour are going to have to rewrite the rules for Ryder Cup eligibility,” McIlroy said to SkySports’ Jamie Weir . “Like absolutely, there’s no question about that. I certainly want Jon Rahm on the next Ryder Cup team.” 

As it turns out, McIlroy was thinking a bit too far ahead. There was no need for rules changes. The DP World Tour hasn’t changed a thing about how the European RC team will be created — and hasn’t even announced qualification rules yet — but barring any surprising adjustments, Rahm and his fellow European LIV players will be eligible, so long as they follow some rules. 

How? Let us explain. 

When he made that statement, McIlroy had just competed with Rahm two months earlier at the Ryder Cup in Italy, winning the biennial event in dominant fashion over the Americans. Notably, Sergio Garcia was absent. One of the best players in the history of the Cup was not considered for a captain’s pick by Luke Donald because Garcia had surrendered his DP World Tour membership. 

The key to Garcia getting a look (among other reasons) begins and ends with this DP World Tour membership. In order to be a Ryder Cup member for Team Europe, one needs to be a DP World Tour member. For Rahm and, say, Tyrrell Hatton , it is no different. They need to maintain DP World Tour membership in 2024, which means they need to earn it in 2023. This was clear last year and was reiterated by new DPWT CEO, Guy Kinnings, in a sit-down with media in Central London Friday. 

“The reality is that until we announce the qualification process, which we don’t need to do yet as that doesn’t start for another four to five months, it’s kind of speculation,” Kinnings told members of the U.K. media , according to various reports . “But, if you look at what the qualification/eligibility criteria was for 2023, then I think there has been a slight misconception because the reality is under the current rules, if a player is European and is a member of the DP World Tour and abides by the rules as they currently are — so, if you don’t get a release, there are sanctions and if you accept those sanctions and take those penalties and work with that — there is no reason why players who’ve taken LIV membership but maintain membership with the DP World Tour could not A) qualify or B) be available for selection.”

If that sounds a bit confusing, here’s the simple answer: Jon Rahm earns a one-event suspension on the DP World Tour for every single LIV Golf event he plays. Those regulations were handed down in the summer of 2022 , when LIV Golf launched, pulling players from the PGA Tour and DP World Tour to their events without first obtaining conflicting event releases. When Rahm plays in this week’s LIV event, in Australia, he gets suspended/banned from competing in next week’s DP World Tour event, the Volvo China Open. When he competes on in Singapore next week, he’ll be suspended from competing in the next DP World Tour event, the Soudal Open, in Belgium, in late May. Each time he plays, he also incurs a fine, but Rahm has no financial constraints — we all know that . 

The real trick lies in how many DP World Tour events Rahm can then play, given these hovering suspensions. Because in order to retain membership, Rahm must compete in a minimum of four DP World Tour events this season outside of the major championships. He has thus far competed in zero. Tyrrell Hatton has competed in one, the Dubai Desert Classic, back in January.

“It’s not a loophole,” Kinnings told the group , according to reports , “because that’s the rules we’ve always had and those are the rules we are going to continue to apply.”

Okay then. How exactly does Rahm thread the needle here, playing in every LIV Golf event, as he has been contracted to do, earn suspensions for the succeeding week’s DPWT event, and then still compete four times before the season is finished? He’s going to have to play plenty of golf in September, but he may really want to. That’s when the DPWT heads to his homeland, Spain. 

Looking at the schedule LIV Golf has in 2024 — which still has two events that have not been announced — Rahm will likely incur suspensions for, or struggle to travel to, every DPWT event in May and June. He could find himself available for the BMW International Open in Germany the first week of July, so if you see him playing that event, know he’s taking this all very seriously. 

Even if Rahm doesn’t play that event, he’ll likely have a stretch in the fall that allows him to play the Spanish Open, the Dunhill Links Championship, the French Open and the Andalucia Masters in successive weeks, two of those events taking place in Spain. It will be prime time European golf season as the DPWT hosts the British Masters, the Irish Open and the tour’s premier event, the BMW PGA Championship, all at the beginning of September. Then the Season of Rahm could follow. If Rahm were to play well, he may even earn enough Race to Dubai points to advance to the DP World Tour playoffs in November, after LIV’s season would have likely been finished. 

So, what are golf fans supposed to think of it? 

Once again, stay patient. Rahm will no doubt be asked about his intentions for his summer schedule in the coming weeks at the PGA Championship, if not sooner. He will be a busy golfer, either way, with the Olympic Golf Competition also on his horizon. But if he wants the Ryder Cup badly enough, there’s a path for him to follow that leads all the way to Bethpage.
