The capital of the UAE, Abu Dhabi is the very model of a modern Gulf petro-city: thoroughly contemporary, unashamedly wealthy and decidedly staid. The emirate's lightning change from obscure fishing village into modern city-state within the past forty years is perhaps the most dramatic of all the stories of oil-driven transformation that dot the region, although locals have long prided themselves on the city’s more slow-paced and traditional lifestyle compared to Dubai, happy to live in the shadow of their upstart neighbour. Things are changing, however, and recent years have seen the city increasingly competing for local bragging rights and making its own concerted bid for the global tourist and business dollar, with a string of landmark new mega-projects slowly taking shape across the city and a skyline now almost as upwardly mobile as Dubai’s own.

Abu Dhabi orientation

Aldar hq building, al maryah and al reem islands, between the bridges, corniche road, emirates palace hotel, heritage village, marina mall, masdar city, midtown abu dhabi and capital gate, qasr al hosn and around, saadiyat island, world trade center and around.

The city’s two standout attractions are the stunning Sheikh Zayed Mosque , one of the world’s largest and most extravagant places of Islamic worship, and the ultra-opulent Emirates Palace Hotel – while the spectacular new Abu Dhabi Louvre, hopefully open (or about to open) by the time you read this, promises to add further significant gloss to the city’s burgeoning tourist credentials. Other highlights include the memorable modern souk at the World Trade Center , the contrastingly traditional Heritage Village , offering superb views of the sweeping, skyscraper-lined Corniche, and the stunning modern developments gradually taking shape on Al Maryah and Al Reem islands.

Tailor-made trips for   United Arab Emirates

Abu Dhabi isn’t as vastly spread out as Dubai, but still stretches over a considerable area – even the city centre’s main sights are too widely scattered to be comfortably walkable (it’s 8km from the Emirates Palace on the southwest side of the centre to the Abu Dhabi Mall on the opposite flank). Fortunately there are plenty of inexpensive city taxis available to ferry you around the city, as well as for longer trips out to the Sheikh Zayed Mosque (15km from the centre) and beyond.

The city is actually built on an island, connected to the mainland by three bridges: (from north to south) Sheikh Zayed Bridge , Al Maqtaa Bridge and Mussafah Bridge . These bridges connect in turn to the three main roads across the island: Al Salam Street , Al Maktoum Street and Al Khaleej al Arabi Street . Memorize this basic layout, and you’ll hopefully not go too far wrong.

Route-finding and orientation are generally straightforward thanks to the city’s fairly regular grid plan, although potential confusion is provided by the city’s street names . All major roads have both a number and a name (or sometimes two). Odd-numbered roads run up and down the island, starting with the Corniche Road (1st Street); even-numbered roads run across the island. Names are more complicated. Most major roads have a modern Arabic name, although different parts of the same street may have different names (the city-centre 5th Street, for example, is known as Al Nasr Street at one end and Hamdan bin Mohammed Street – or just Hamdan Street – at the other). A few old pre-independence names also remain in occasional use (7th Street, for example: officially Sheikh Zayed the First Street but also known as Electra Street; or 9th Street, officially Al Falah Road but also occasionally referred to as Old Passport Road). Road signs generally show a mix of numbers and modern names.

Driving into Abu Dhabi along the main Dubai highway you can’t fail to notice the extraordinary Aldar HQ building, headquarters of the Aldar property group and intended to form the centrepiece of the still-evolving Al Raha Beach development. Dubbed “the world’s first circular skyscraper”, it looks rather like an enormous magnifying glass, crisscrossed with a diagonal grid of steel supports which largely remove the need for internal columns. It’s well worth a closer look, and you’re free to go inside the lobby for a glimpse of the building’s airy interior.

Immediately beyond downtown, on the far side of a narrow sea inlet, a cluster of dramatic skyscrapers announces the city’s new financial district, Al Maryah Island . Abu Dhabi’s biggest and most futuristic urban development, the island is still very much a work in progress but has already sprouted a modest crop of wacky skyscrapers whose outlandish outlines hint at the architectural madness yet to come.

Centrepiece of the development (and the only part more or less finished at present) is the dramatic Abu Dhabi Global Market Square (or Sowwah Square, as it was previously known, and is still often described), with four massive skyscrapers surrounding the distinctively anvil-shaped Abu Dhabi Global Market building. Beneath this, the very chic Galleria shopping mall (looking like some kind of postmodern armadillo) swoops down to water level, where an attractive new pedestrianized promenade, dotted with cafés and restaurants, stretches down along the water to the quirky Cleveland Clinic building, resembling a pile of haphazardly piled transparent Lego bricks.

Cosying up against the southeastern flank of Al Maryah, the larger Al Reem Island is also in the throes of massive transformation, with further skyscrapers mushrooming up on a seemingly daily basis. Even from a considerable distance you can’t fail to notice The Gate Towers at the centre of the island’s Shams Abu Dhabi development – a trio of colossal towers capped by a huge skybridge, like a very futuristic but slightly wonky wicket.

The workaday Al Mina port district, stretching north of Al Zahiyeh, is where you’ll find Abu Dhabi’s closest equivalents to a traditional souk. First up is the so-called Carpet Souk , a modest square surrounded by small shops. Most of the stock on offer consists of low-grade factory carpet, though some places have more valuable traditional rugs and kilims if you hunt around. A five-minute walk beyond here, the Food Souk is aimed largely at the wholesale trade, although there’s a colourful line of date merchants at the southern end. A short distance west of here is the Al Mina Fish Market , with the day’s catch lined up along the quay.

Three bridges connect Abu Dhabi with the mainland, crossing the narrow sea inlet which separates the city from the mainland close to one another about 15km from the centre. Crossing Al Maqtaa Bridge, the middle of the three, you’ll probably notice an old watchtower sitting in the middle of the water, while just over the bridge you’ll pass the quaint little Al Maqtaa Fort (not open to the public), which once guarded approaches to the city.

The area south of here, on the mainland between Al Maqtaa and Mussafah bridges – now popularly (if unimaginatively) known as Between the Bridges (Bain al Jessrain) – has become a major tourist destination with the recent opening of a string of hotels, including the opulent Shangri-La .

Driving through modern Abu Dhabi’s suburban sprawl, it’s easy not to notice that the city is built on an island rather than on the mainland itself; it wasn’t until the construction of the Maqtaa Bridge in 1966 that the two were connected. The city’s waterfront location is best appreciated from the sweeping, waterfront Corniche , which runs for the best part of 5km along Abu Dhabi’s western edge, lined with spacious gardens on either side and flanked by a long and impressively tall line of glass-clad high-rises (best viewed from the Heritage Village across the water).

Several of the city’s most striking recent developments can be found at the southwestern end of the Corniche Road. The huge Etihad Towers complex ( w etihadtowers.com ) is one of the city's major landmarks: a cluster of five futuristic skyscrapers, whose sinuous curved lines and highly polished metallic surfaces couldn’t be further removed from the über-traditional Emirates Palace opposite if they tried. They also offer one of the city’s finest views from the 74th-floor Observation Deck at 300 (in tower two; daily 10am–6pm; 75dh, including 50dh worth of food/drink in the attached café), at precisely 300m, as the name suggests.

Standing nearby in massive, solitary splendour above the Corniche is the ADNOC building, the appropriately huge HQ of the mega-rich Abu Dhabi National Oil Company. Completed in 2014, this is the second-highest building in the city, standing 342m high and sporting a distinctive design with a black-glass skyscraper inside a kind of white frame. Slightly further along the Corniche, the Nations Towers development comprises two further similarly neck-cricking towers of slightly unequal height, joined at the top by a vertiginous sky-bridge, the world’s highest, housing the Abu Dhabi Suite of the St Regis hotel, complete with its own cinema, gym, spa and two-storey majlis – the UAE’s most expensive room, at a cool US$25,000 a night.

The Corniche Road is also a popular spot with local residents catching (or shooting) the breeze, particularly towards dusk, when it fills up with a diverse crowd of promenading Emiratis, jogging Europeans and picnicking Indians. There’s also an attractive blue-flag beach with safe swimming stretching from near the Hilton to Al Khaleej al Arabi Street (which is where you’ll find the main entrance). The best way to explore is by renting a bike from one of the four outlets of FunRideSports dotted along the Corniche (the main one is next to the Hiltonia Beach Club opposite the Hilton ); prices start at 30dh/hr, or 20dh for kids.

Standing in solitary splendour at the western end of the city is the vast Emirates Palace Hotel . Opened in 2005, it was intended to rival Dubai’s Burj al Arab and provide Abu Dhabi with a similarly iconic “seven-star” landmark – although in fact the two buildings could hardly be more different. Driveways climb up through the grounds to the main entrance to the hotel, which sits in an elevated position above the sea and surrounding gardens. It’s impressively stage-managed, although the only really unusual thing about the building is its sheer size: 1km in length, 114 domes, 140 elevators, 2000 staff and so on. The quasi-Arabian design, meanwhile, is disappointingly pedestrian and much of the exterior looks strangely drab and even a little bit cheap – ironic, really, given that the hotel is believed to have been the most expensive ever built (at a rumoured cost of US$3 billion). All of which means the Emirates Palace is as cautiously conservative as the Burj al Arab is daringly futuristic and innovative – which says a lot about the contrasting outlooks of the two very different cities which they represent.

The interior is far more memorable, centred on a dazzling central dome-cum-atrium, with vast quantities of marble and huge chandeliers. Cavernous corridors stretch out for what seem like miles towards the rooms in the two huge flanking wings – you can work up a healthy appetite just walking between your room and the lobby, and even staff have been known to get lost. The six “ruler’s suites”, with gold-plated fittings throughout, are more conveniently situated, but are reserved for visiting heads of state. Visitors with cash to drop can shop to impress at the world’s first gold vending machine (in the lobby), which dispenses over three hundred pure-gold products, including miniature gold ingots. Non-guests can visit for a meal at one of the numerous restaurants, or drop in for a sumptuous afternoon tea – although it's a good idea to reserve in advance.

Directly behind the Emirates Palace is Abu Dhabi’s staggeringly vast Presidential Palace . Finished in 2015 at a reputed cost of almost half a billion US dollars, the palace's rambling Arabian-style skyline of endless marble-clad domes, cupolas and towers looks like almost a mirror image of the adjacent Emirates Palace , and equally huge, or perhaps slightly more so.

Dramatically situated on the Corniche Road-facing side of the Breakwater – a small protuberance of reclaimed land jutting out from its southern end – the Heritage Village offers a slice of traditional Abu Dhabi done up for the visiting coach parties who flock here for whistle-stop visits, although it's the spectacular views over the water to the Corniche that are perhaps the main attraction (best appreciated over a coffee or juice at the slightly moth-eaten Al Asalah Restaurant right on the waterfront at the back of the complex). The “village” itself consists of a string of picturesque barasti huts including a number of workshops where local artisans – carpenters, potters, brass-makers and so on – can sometimes be seen at work. The so-called “traditional market”, however, is basically just a few ladies flogging cheap handicrafts out of a further huddle of huts.

Immediately beyond the Heritage Village you can’t fail to notice the enormous flagpole , visible for miles around. At 123m, this was formerly claimed to be the tallest in the world, until topped in 2003 by one in Jordan (made, ironically, in Dubai). The quaint little octagonal building right next to the flagpole is the Abu Dhabi Theatre , its secular function belying its decidedly mosque-like appearance, complete with hemispherical dome and colourful Islamic tiling.

Dominating the centre of the Breakwater, the large Marina Mall is one of the city’s largest and most popular shopping destinations, built around a disorienting series of circular atriums complete with miniature fountains and topped with tent-style roofs. The mall’s main attraction for non-shoppers is its views of the long string of glass-faced high-rises lining the Corniche. These are best appreciated from the soaring Marina Sky Tower , located at the back of the mall, accessible for the price of a drink or meal at either the Colombiano coffee shop or Tiara revolving restaurant, both of which also offer bird's-eye views of the new Fairmont hotel – a huge pink monstrosity currently under construction directly behind the mall.

If somewhere like Yas Island is exactly what you’d expect in a place built on petroleum and in which the motor car is king, Masdar City is a complete surprise: the kernel of a brand-new zero-carbon, zero-waste green city, car-free and entirely self-sufficient in energy (using solar power and other renewable sources). Originally intended to cover some six square kilometres and provide a home to around 50,000 residents and 1500 businesses, the whole project has been more or less stalled since the credit crunch, although the small section so far completed is well worth a visit, and offers a tantalizing glimpse of what the twenty-second-century city might just conceivably look like.

Around 12km south of the Corniche, the Midtown area is dominated by the huge Zayed Sports City complex (home to Abu Dhabi’s test cricket ground, international tennis centre and numerous other sporting facilities), the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre and, most strikingly, the eye-bogglingly odd Capital Gate skyscraper: a huge (160m), steeply tilted skyscraper apparently on the point of toppling over like a drunkard in heavy weather. The building has been officially recognized by Guinness World Records as the world’s most tilted tower and is popularly (if not very originally) known as the Leaning Tower of Abu Dhabi – although its eighteen-degree incline is actually more than four times that of the famous Italian landmark.

More or less at the very centre of Abu Dhabi sits Qasr al Hosn (“The Palace Fort”), the oldest building in Abu Dhabi. The fort started life around 1761 as a single round watchtower built to defend the only freshwater well in Abu Dhabi, and was subsequently expanded in 1793, becoming the residence of Abu Dhabi’s ruling Al Nahyan family. In 1939, Sheikh Shakhbut bin Sultan al Nahyan, the elder brother of Sheikh Zayed, began to significantly enlarge the complex using income raised from the first oil-prospecting concessions granted to foreign companies.

The fort continued to serve as the ruler’s palace and seat of government until Sheikh Zayed came to power in 1966, at which point the ruling family decamped and the fort was given over to purely administrative uses. It was eventually renovated, acquiring a bright new covering of white-painted concrete – hence its popular name of the “White Fort”. The large and rather plain whitewashed structure you see today is of no particular architectural distinction, although the rambling battlemented walls, dotted with a few watchtowers, are modestly pretty. The fort was under renovation at the time of writing and is due to reopen as a major new museum of Abu Dhabi’s historical and cultural heritage – although no one seems to have any idea of when this might happen.

Rising to the northwest of Qasr al Hosn is the huge The Landmark skyscraper with its distinctive curved summit. This was the tallest building (312m) in the city when finished in 2012, but has now already been eclipsed by both the Burj Mohammed bin Rashid and ADNOC HQ.

One of the chain of islands running between downtown Abu Dhabi and the mainland, Saadiyat Island (“Island of Happiness”) is slated to become the twenty-first-century jewel in Abu Dhabi’s cultural crown with the opening of the new Abu Dhabi Louvre and a slew of other attractions.

Pending the opening of the Louvre, Saadiyat’s main draw is the Saadiyat Public Beach , a beautiful blue-flag, lifeguard-patrolled beach, with a gorgeous swathe of fine white sand and facilities including toilets, showers and the Bake bistro kiosk. The protected dunes backing the sands support a delicate ecosystem whose vegetation survives on the ultimate slimmer’s diet of atmospheric moisture and coastal fog, as well as providing a nesting site for green and hawksbill turtles (mainly April to July) and local and migratory birds. Reptiles and mammals ranging from gerbils to gazelles can also be found here, while Indo-Pacific humpback and bottlenose dolphins can occasionally be seen in the waters offshore.

On the western side of the island, Manarat al Saadiyat hosts an exhibition showcasing the various developments planned here. It feels mainly like a glossy PR and sales exercise, although some of the architectural models and pictures are interesting, offering tantalizing glimpses of how the island may eventually look. The striking building next door – like a huge metal sand dune – is the UAE Pavilion , designed by Foster + Partners for the Shanghai World Expo 2010 and subsequently moved here at the end of the exhibition. It’s not regularly open, but hosts occasional exhibitions and cultural events.

Coming soon(ish) to Saadiyat

Currently sleepier than a rather dusty dormouse, Saadiyat Island is set to become Abu Dhabi’s key tourist destination and home to a spectacular new US$27 billion cultural district featuring several world-class museums and other attractions – a key component in the city’s increasingly energetic attempts to raise itself up out of the shadows of Dubai, backed by the emirate’s apparently bottomless well of petrodollars.

Centrepiece of the district is the vast new Abu Dhabi Louvre (due to open in late 2016), housed in a spectacular, flying saucer-shaped building designed by Jean Nouvel and showcasing a wide range of European and Middle Eastern artefacts from the collection of the famous Parisian museum. A new Frank Gehry-designed Guggenheim Museum and a Sheikh Zayed National Museum by Foster + Partners are also planned, and although both have singularly failed to get built since they were first announced in 2006, the long-overdue opening of the Louvre suggests that the entire juggernaut project is finally at the point of getting off the ground.

Standing on the site of the city’s former main souk, the huge World Trade Center (previously known as the Central Market) is one of central Abu Dhabi’s most interesting recent developments. Much of the complex is concentrated in a pair of shiny cylindrical skyscrapers, the Trust Tower and Burj Mohammed bin Rashid . The latter is currently the tallest building in Abu Dhabi at 382m, named after the current ruler of Dubai, just as the tallest building in Dubai is named after the ruler of Abu Dhabi – although the latter’s Sheikh Khalifa has undoubtedly got the better of a rather unequal deal.

The centre's main attraction, however, is its marvellous souk , designed by Foster + Partners and offering a wonderfully original postmodern take on the traditional Middle Eastern bazaar. Housed in a kind of huge three-storey wooden box, the design blends traditional Arabian motifs with modern materials to memorable effect, with the intricate latticework of the enclosing wooden superstructure (reminiscent of traditional Arabian mashrabiya windows and screens) creating a marvellous play of light and shadow within. Take time to have a look at the outside of the souk, too, where the full ingenuity, artistry and scale of the enclosing box are fully revealed.

Shops around the ground floor include several handicrafts and souvenir shops, plus dedicated honey and spice shops – most of the stuff on offer is fairly humdrum, although hunt around and you might turn up some more interesting collectibles. There are also a couple of places to eat in the central atrium and a very chintzy branch of Shakespeare & Co .

On the other side of Khalifa bin Zayed the First Street, the recently opened WTC Mall continues the architectural theme of the souk, although in a significantly watered-down and less memorable way, complete with piped muzak and naff shops.

Exiting the east side of the WTC Mall brings you directly out onto Al Ittihad (“Union”) Square, home to an arresting sequence of oversized sculptures, including a vast cannon, enormous perfume bottle and gargantuan coffeepot – an endearingly quirky contrast to the largely drab surrounding architecture.

About 30–35km from the centre on the outermost edges of the city, not far from the airport, Yas Island is now home to several of the city’s key tourist attractions. Fast cars are the principal order of the day here thanks to the presence of the Yas Marina Circuit , which hosts the annual Abu Dhabi F1 Grand Prix along with various other races and activities. Overlooking the circuit on one side and the island’s swanky marina on the other you’ll notice the dramatic Yas Viceroy Hotel , topped by a 217m-long undulating glass-and-steel canopy studded with over five thousand LEDs which ripple memorably with changing light displays after dark.

The Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital (ADFH) is located just outside Abu Dhabi. It is the largest of its kind in the world attracting customers from all over the UAE and the wider Gulf region including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain. Traditionally a way of obtaining food, Falconry today has become more of a national sport and a rite of passage for many young Emirati men, who take their time to train their Falcons, developing a relationship and deep bond with the birds. Groups of friends regularly come together in the evenings to meet and train their birds where the practice becomes more about camaraderie and sharing knowledge than subsistence. The practice of Falconry was recognized by UNESCO in 2012 under the 'Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity' list. (Photo by Dan Kitwood/Getty Images)

All about city tours in Abu Dhabi

City tours in Abu Dhabi allow you to experience this glittering city from all angles.

Between the skyscrapers lie immaculate palace lawns, adventure islands and natural refuges, such as Mangrove National Park. A city tour of Abu Dhabi places all the highlights of this diverse city and the great outdoors within reach.

There are several travel and tours agency providers in Abu Dhabi – Big Bus Tours has two routes, which can be enjoyed from a refreshingly breezy open-air bus.

Other excursions combine cultural attractions such as Heritage Village with Yas Island theme parks, while boat tours glide between landmarks on the glittering Arabian Gulf.

Abu Dhabi tour rides make seeing all the best parts of the city simple, so all you need to worry about is making unforgettable memories.

The best city tours in Abu Dhabi

See many of the most important landmarks on the Abu Dhabi city tour by bus – it’s a hop-on, hop-off experience which transports you between key attractions and neighbourhoods.

There are two routes. The red route focuses on urban attractions such as Corniche Beach, Marina Mall and Qasr al Hosn. The Presidential Palace and Emirates Palace can also be admired on this route.

The green route, meanwhile, begins at Abu Dhabi Mall and takes a wider tour of the Abu Dhabi region, with the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque taking star position.

The green route stops on Yas Island, where a range of exciting family attractions lie, including Yas Waterworld, Yas Marina Circuit and Ferrari World™ Abu Dhabi.

On this route, the Abu Dhabi tour bus also stops at Eastern Mangroves, on the cusp of the luscious natural landscapes of Mangrove National Park.

city tours big bus

This Abu Dhabi tour is a planned excursion lasting for a full day, which can be booked with Etihad.

The first stop is the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, which is a majestic place of worship and magnificently marble clad. Inside, you can expect to see intricate works of Islamic craftmanship.

Next up is Heritage Village, where traditional Bedouin life is revived via a reconstructed desert village complete with craft workshops. From here, it’s on to Saadiyat Island – where you’ll find the Louvre Abu Dhabi, an architectural wonder and home to impressive artefacts from across the globe.

This Abu Dhabi city tour package also comes with entry to one of Yas Island’s most popular attractions – Ferrari World™ Abu Dhabi.

Here, you’ll get to experience the thrills of the famous Formula Rossa, one of the world's fastest rollercoasters.

Tour the city from the water with the Yellow Boats tour – to get spectacular views of Abu Dhabi’s most iconic buildings. In a coastal city whose history is entwined with the Arabian Gulf, travelling upon the waves on a guided tour just makes sense.

There are several Abu Dhabi city tour options with the Yellow Boats, which can be experienced in less than half a day in the morning, afternoon or evening.

The Corniche Tour takes just one hour, brushing the iconic coast and sweeping past Heritage Village towards man-made Lulu Island.

The Yas Tour provides plenty of facts about Abu Dhabi’s most action-packed area, and you’ll see Yas Marina and Yas Marina Circuit, home to the Formula 1™ Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

During your tour, look out for marine life, which is abundant near the mangroves.

City tours in Abu Dhabi

An Abu Dhabi city tour is an enriching journey – there are several types, each presenting a unique itinerary and travel style. Here’s how to experience three of the best.

Getting to Abu Dhabi Mall

The red and green routes of Big Bus Tours intersect at Abu Dhabi Mall, so it’s a great place to hop on. You’ll find it just off Al Maiyani Street, a 12-minute drive from Corniche Beach.

Getting to Emirates Palace Marina

The Abu Dhabi Yellow Boats tour takes off from Emirates Palace Marina. This is located near the UAE Presidential Palace and Qasr al Watan.

Getting to Etihad’s tours

Etihad’s Modern Abu Dhabi City Tour, which comes with access to Ferrari World™ Abu Dhabi, offers pickup from any location in central Abu Dhabi – airport or hotel pick-up can be requested when you book a tour.

Things to know before you go

Allow plenty of time for big attractions.

If you’re using a hop-on city tour to acquaint yourself with big attractions such as the Louvre Museum Abu Dhabi, then be sure to plan enough time for each segment of your day.

Allow two hours each for both the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and Louvre Abu Dhabi, which are both full of things to do. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is the UAE’s largest mosque, with a main prayer hall that can accommodate 7,000 worshippers and plenty of smaller rooms to marvel at, too.

The Louvre Abu Dhabi has 23 permanent galleries to discover. Leave yourself with plenty of time to get the most from the Arabian peninsula’s largest art museum.

abu dhabi tour guide

Prepare for warm weather

Abu Dhabi city tours are always warm, no matter what time of year you visit so it’s important to be well prepared. Pack plenty of water, sun cream and a hat for shelter from the sun, especially if your tour is via boat or open-top bus.

Long and lightweight clothing can help you to keep you cool – however, since many attractions are air-conditioned, it is also a good idea to carry a warmer layer, too.

City Tours: FAQs

A Guide To Abu Dhabi And The Best Places To Stay, Dine & Visit

Merging heritage and innovation, adventure and relaxation, Abu Dhabi is the year-round sunshine destination for your radar. All eyes are on the UAE capital now too, as it was hosting the Formula 1 Grand Prix — the last race of the F1 season. If you’re already there, or are considering it for your next vacation, read on for our travel guide to Abu Dhabi and its best hotels, attractions and dining spots.

A region that’s easy to reach — its airport services non-stop passenger flights to 99 destinations in 56 countries — and has it all, there is so much to discover. This includes its rich arts and culture, thanks to the Louvre and the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi that’s set to be located on Saadiyat Island, the cultural district in Abu Dhabi. Then there’s the pull of the gastronomic scene, especially with the arrival of the Michelin Guide last year.

Not forgetting its top-rate hospitality, luxury residences and exciting future developments the likes of Saadiyat Grove, Nobu Hotel & Residences, The Louvre Residences, Sadiyaat Lagoons and The Source Sadiyaat.

abu dhabi travel guide best attractions and hotels

These combined with the fast-growing economy with a high GDP of USD 268 billion (it is the wealthiest emirate of the UAE) and zero taxation, it comes to no surprise then, that there has been a significant uptick in people not only holidaying but buying homes in the area within the last three years. In fact, the first nine months of 2023 alone saw more than 25% of recorded sales registered by overseas buyers. Evidently, now’s the best time to visit Abu Dhabi and buy properties there.

From buzzing promenades to peaceful marinas, white sand beaches, thrilling attractions, and Michelin-starred restaurants , here’s your ultimate travel guide to the bustling region of Abu Dhabi.

The best time to visit

Abu Dhabi has year-round sunshine thanks to its desert climate, and for comfortable temperatures it’s recommended to visit from October to May when it starts heating up. It’s worth noting that August is usually its hottest month, reaching around 36°C.

How to reach Abu Dhabi

The flight time from Kuala Lumpur to Abu Dhabi is approximately 7 hours and 25 minutes for direct flights. Etihad Airways is the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, and flies from Kuala Lumpur.

Accommodation here is pure luxury, with various room types including the Beach Villa, one-bedroom villas that have been designed to merge with the landscape, mirroring the beauty and tranquillity of the environment; and the Beach House which are elegant homes that don a terrace, pools for each bedroom, and direct beach access. A COMPLETE GUIDE TO ABU DHABI

This post may contain affiliate links. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. We may receive a small commission when you make a purchase using our link.

Abu Dhabi is the capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) but the city often gets overshadowed by it’s much larger and glitzier neighbour Dubai just 1 hour down the road.

Abu Dhabi , however, is a great place to spend a few days as it can often be much cheaper than Dubai , plus there are more and more tourist attractions opening all the time!

It is also a very safe city, and whilst Arabic is the official language, English is spoken widely as there is a very large expat community. I spent almost 4 years living in Abu Dhabi so let me share with you my favourite tourist attractions, restaurants, and hotels in Abu Dhabi!

THINGS TO SEE IN ABU DHABI

Sheikh zayed mosque.

Sheikh Zayed Mosque, also known as The Grand Mosque , is Abu Dhabi’s most famous attraction and for good reason – it is simply stunning!

With its white marble walls, 82 intricately detailed domes and reflective pools in the courtyard, many people believe this to be the most beautiful mosque in the world.

It is also one of the world’s largest mosques (it can fit a staggering 40,000 people inside) and houses the world’s largest carpet and third-largest chandelier (covered in Swarovski crystals)! It cost half a billion USD to build!

As it is a holy place of worship you must dress appropriately. If required, women will be loaned an abaya to cover themselves up with as they must be covered from their wrists to their ankles, as well as have their hair covered.

Sheikh Zayed Mosque is open daily from 9 am until 10 pm except on Fridays. Friday is the holy day in Islam so opening times on a Friday are from 4.30 pm-10 pm.  It is free for tourists to visit and it does get pretty busy here so arrive first thing to avoid the crowds as much as possible. At night time it is lit up beautifully so it is also nice to visit just after sunset. You can read my guide on taking great photographs at the mosque here .

Across from Sheikh Zayed Mosque is Wahat al Karama park – head here for a fabulous view of the mosque. There are very few people here even during sunset.

For more information, read our complete guide to visiting the Sheikh Zayed Mosque in Abu Dhabi !

Desert Safari

No visit to Abu Dhabi is complete without doing a desert safari! The desert is less than an hour away and a desert safari is a really fun adventure. You can do morning or evening safaris, or even an overnight one camping in the desert!

By far the most popular one is the evening safari which usually lasts from 3 pm-9 pm as guests get to watch the sunset in the desert which is really magical. It includes pickup and drop-off, dune bashing, sandboarding, riding a camel, holding a falcon (the national bird of the UAE) and then a BBQ buffet and a belly dancing show at a Bedouin-style camp under the stars in the desert.

It is a really special and exciting experience and you definitely shouldn’t leave Abu Dhabi without experiencing it!

There are many companies that offer very similar desert safaris for a very reasonable price. There are several desert safaris available, including overnight stays and half day tours .

Louvre Abu Dhabi

Even if you are not into museums it is definitely worth it to check out the impressive Louvre Abu Dhabi on Saadiyat Island, just a 10-minute drive from downtown Abu Dhabi. Opened in 2017, the Louvre Abu Dhabi is the first of it’s kind to open outside France.

The building itself is a masterpiece – the roof is metallic and looks almost like a cosmic dome! Natural light pierces through the latticework and creates a beautiful illusion inside.

The collections here are very impressive and include civilisations all over the world, from ancient times until the present day. They also feature pieces from Monet, da Vinci and Van Gogh.

Make sure to view the opening times before you go. Note Louvre Abu Dhabi is closed on Mondays. Entrance is 63 dirhams ($17).

Gold Cappuccino And Ice Cream At Emirates Palace

Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi’s most iconic hotel. This elaborate and grand hotel is beautiful both on the outside and on the inside, yet it is far too expensive for most people to stay in (the cheapest rooms start at $560 per night!). However, you can visit the Palace for free to have a look around and take in the grandeur and beauty of the floor to ceiling marble and gold.

What’s more, you can head to Le Cafe in the lobby to experience the renowned Palace cappuccino! This cappuccino is sprinkled in 23 karat gold flakes (yes they are real!). If coffee isn’t your thing, try the vanilla and chocolate ice-cream covered in 23 karat gold. I’ve tried both of them and they are equally delicious! The coffee is priced at 60 dirhams and the ice cream at 40 dirhams.

A walk along the Corniche (seafront) is a must when in Abu Dhabi. It stretches for 8km along the coast but the most popular part is around the Corniche Beach/Family Beach area, just a few minutes walk from Emirates Palace.

The pedestrianized promenade along The Corniche is very elegant and relaxing and there are several restaurants and cafes you can stop in along the way which offer beautiful views of the beachfront.

Yas Island, a 30-minute drive from downtown Abu Dhabi features a whole host of activities. Ferrari World, Warner Brothers World, Yas Waterworld  – that’s enough theme parks to keep you entertained for a while! Ferrari World  features the world’s fastest rollercoaster that reaches 240km/h (150mph) whereas Warner Brothers World  has the world’s largest indoor theme park.

Additionally, Yas Island features the huge Yas Mall as well as the Formula One circuit. The Formula One takes place each November in Abu Dhabi and is a really fun event! Nearby Yas Marina also offers a nice vibe in the evening with several nightlife options available.

If you want to try driving a race car for yourself, you can even book a Yas 3000 Driving Experience !

Visit The Mangroves

For something a little different and to keep you in shape on your trip to Abu Dhabi head to the Eastern Mangroves for some Stand Up Paddleboarding or kayaking. The natural mangrove forest is really beautiful and home to a variety of marine life.

It is very calm here, certainly a world apart from fast-paced Abu Dhabi! For 2 hours paddleboarding, the price is 140 dirhams per adult. Click here for more info.

If you fancy trying some other water sports whilst you are in Abu Dhabi you can go surfing at Saadiyat Beach or jet skiing at Yas Beach.

Sightseeing Boat Trip

Abu Dhabi is made up of over 200 islands so the best way to see the city is from the water!  Jalboot  does a really great boat sightseeing tour of Abu Dhabi. It covers the best sites of Abu Dhabi, from the striking skyline of downtown Abu Dhabi to Emirates Palace, going past the Grand Mosque and even heading down to Yas Marina.

RESTAURANTS AND DINING

Abu Dhabi is a cosmopolitan city. It has residents from many different countries and its restaurants are a reflection of this. The variety of cuisines available in this city is genuinely impressive!

And from award-winning restaurants to eateries with more modest prices, there is something to suit every tastebud and pocket in Abu Dhabi! As a general rule of thumb, restaurants specialising in Arabic food will often be cheaper than restaurants serving international cuisine.

Fine Dining

Many of Abu Dhabi’s finest and expensive restaurants can actually be found inside its top hotels. Some of these restaurants that I really recommend include:

  • Italian: Villa Toscana  (located inside Hotel St Regis Abu Dhabi )
  • Indian:  Angar (located inside Yas Hotel )
  • Japanese: Zuma – located on Al Maryah Island
  • Steakhouse: BOA Steakhouse  – located at Eastern Mangroves

The restaurants listed above are all on the pricey side but are perfect for a special occasion.

Moderately Price Dining

More reasonably priced restaurants that I also love include:

  • Italian:  Spaccanapoli (located inside Crowne Plaza Abu Dhabi )
  • Seafood: Aquarium (located on Yas Marina)
  • Local Emirati cuisine: Al Fanar  (located inside Yas Mall)

WHERE TO STAY

The great thing about Abu Dhabi is that there are so many hotels to choose from. Before you start looking at hotels though, decide your budget. Hotel prices vary greatly in Abu Dhabi, although you can get some good deals.

You’ll also want to check on the map which area you would like to stay in. Abu Dhabi is quite a spaced out city without a real main centre as new areas are constantly being built.

Neighborhoods

Think would you prefer to stay on trendy Yas Island (such as the unique and very reasonably priced Yas Hotel ), or do you want a view of the Grand Mosque (at the more expensive Shangri-la  and Ritz Carlton Hotels).

Or perhaps you want to be downtown near the Corniche where there is a vast choice of hotels to choose from, or you would prefer something a little further away on Saadiyat Island (such as St Regis ) – although generally, the most expensive hotels are on Saadiyat Island.

Some of Best Places To Stay

  • Jumeirah at Etihad Towers Hotel
  • Emirates Palace Hotel
  • Khalidiya Palace Rayhaan
  • Shangri-La Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri

Desert Hotels

Alternatively, if you fancy a change of scenery you can stay in one of Abu Dhabi’s desert hotels. This is where you can really experience the uninterrupted beauty and tranquillity of the desert. Qasr al Sarab is the ultimate in luxury, or for a much more affordable option, head to Tilal Liwa .

Both are a couple of hours’ drive from Abu Dhabi into the desert and you will need a car to get to both of these hotels as there is no public transport. Staying in one of these desert hotels is highly recommended as it really gives you a chance to relax and recharge your batteries.

WHEN TO VISIT

The cooler months from October until April is the perfect time to visit Abu Dhabi. This is when the weather is at it’s most pleasant and when the majority of tourists visit Abu Dhabi.

From May to September it is unpleasantly hot as temperatures reach over 40 degrees Celsius (105 degrees Fahrenheit) on a daily basis. The UAE is very hot and humid in the summer, and despite the excellent aircon, it is very difficult to withstand the outside temperatures.

Locals and residents even avoid being outside as much as possible during this time. Hotel prices though are much cheaper as there are a lot fewer people around.

GETTING AROUND AND TRANSPORTATION

Taxis are very reasonably priced in Abu Dhabi. They are always available and are considerably quicker than the buses so this is the preferred mode of transport for most people here.

Abu Dhabi taxis are usually grey in colour and they all have CCTV inside them for safety and security reasons. Some even have wifi inside them too!

Currently, taxis in Abu Dhabi only take cash so make sure you have enough for the journey.

Renting A Car

Renting a car in Abu Dhabi is fairly reasonably priced. There are many car hire companies available at the airport, and you can often hire cars for around 100 dirhams per day (around $25).

However, beware there are many speed cameras in UAE and there is no longer a speed buffer! Therefore, if the road sign says 120 km/h you cannot go faster than this. Even if you are doing 121 km/h you will get a fine if caught by the speed cameras!

Abu Dhabi has also just recently introduced toll gates across 4 of the bridges in Abu Dhabi. Therefore, be aware of this and how you have to pay.

Even for experienced drivers, driving in the UAE can sometimes be challenging. Just keep very alert of the other drivers and you will be fine!

HOW TO GET TO GET THERE

Airport and airlines.

Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH) is located 30 km from downtown Abu Dhabi. To drive to the Corniche takes just over 30 minutes, but to drive to Sheikh Zayed Mosque or Yas Island it will take around only 15 minutes.

Etihad Airways is the national carrier of the UAE with the airline’s hub being located in Abu Dhabi. Most people flying into Abu Dhabi will, therefore, arrive with Etihad Airways. But many other international airlines fly into Abu Dhabi too such as British Airways, Turkish Airlines, Alitalia, Air France, Lufthansa and KLM.

Getting To Dubai From Abu Dhabi

From Abu Dhabi, it is a 1-hour drive to Dubai . A taxi will cost around 200 dirhams ($50).

Alternatively, you can take the coach for 25 dirhams ($7) from Abu Dhabi bus station. Just look for the number 100/101 red bus going to either Ibn Battuta or Al Ghubaiba. Buses leave every 20 minutes.

Over recent years Abu Dhabi has become very popular as a tourist destination. With many nationalities granted a free visa on arrival, more and more people are also using it as a stopover for a few days before continuing their journey elsewhere.

The modern buildings and attractions constantly popping up make a nice contrast to the Arabian traditions that are firmly rooted in this region. With year-round sunshine and it being named the world’s safest city in 2019, it’s only a matter of time before you’ll be planning your trip to Abu Dhabi!

Abu Dhabi travel guide

Abu dhabi tourism | abu dhabi guide, you're going to love abu dhabi.

From the serenity of the mangroves to the bustling city center, from the waterfront to the glittering skyscrapers, Abu Dhabi offers visitors an experience like no other.

abu dhabi tour guide

The capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Abu Dhabi lies on an island that extends into the west coast of the Persian Gulf. What was once a pearling village has evolved into a political and financial center. Abu Dhabi is home to a multicultural society with a welcoming spirit, and a dining scene that will thrill foodies with its diversity.

Abu Dhabi is multifaceted: stroll through one of more than 2,000 parks and green spaces, enjoy the beach life, take a drive on a Formula One track, and haggle for bargains at a souk. There's so much to do that you'll find yourself planning your next trip just to catch up on all that you couldn't fit into one visit.

Top 5 Reasons to Visit Abu Dhabi

1. impressive architecture.

Abu Dhabi is a place of spectacular buildings, from the sleek geometry of Etihad Towers, the Baynunah Tower, and other gleaming skyscrapers to the graceful beauty of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Center. Capital Gate, an astonishing skyscraper next to the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre, is the world's tallest leaning building, designed with an 18-degree incline.

2. Waterfront Life and Outdoor Adventure

There are many ways to experience the waterfront in Abu Dhabi, from a leisurely ferry ride to Zaya Nurai Island or one of the other islands to trying out some of the many watersports on offer. You can lounge on Corniche Beach, cheer on a camel race, go dune bashing on an ATV, and more.

3. Experience Arabic Culture

There are museums and exhibitions to visit, and tours you can take, but perhaps the best way to experience traditional Arabian culture is in the sheesha (hookah) cafes or haggling for bargains in a souk or open air market. In nearby Al Ain, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home of the world's oldest permanent settlement, you can stay in traditional Emirati style at the Arabian Nights Village.

4. Stellar Dining

Arabic food is found everywhere, naturally, from casual to fine dining, along with many South Asian and European restaurants. If you love pork, bear in mind that it is sold only to non-Muslims in specified places, and you can expect the same type of regulation with alcohol.

5. Shopaholics Paradise

You could call shopping a national sport in Abu Dhabi, with virtually everything on offer from the latest international designers in ultra-modern shopping malls to traditionally hand-loomed carpets in the Carpet Souk, as well as jewelry, antiques and more. Note that during certain Muslim holidays, notably Ramadan, shop hours may be different than at other times of the year.

What to do in Abu Dhabi

1. sheikh zayed mosque: white beacon.

The largest in the country, this dazzling mosque sits in pristine Islamic gardens. Covered in the purest white marble and boasting the tallest dome for a mosque in the world, the interior is both dwarfing and extravagantly detailed, inlaid with floral design. Other statistics are equally stunning, with a courtyard surrounded by 80 marble domes upheld by over a hundred columns, and a capacity of 41,000 worshippers.

2. Heritage Village: Step into the Past

Before the Emirati people came upon valuable stores of oil beneath the desert, they lived a nomadic life on those lands. Visit the Heritage Village for a glimpse of their traditional lifestyle. Learn about how the oasis would provide perfect living conditions for constructing homes, providing water to communities and camels, and developing irrigation lines, among other things. From the spice shops to the craftsmen's workshops, this is quite an immersive experience.

3. Corniche Beach: Wonderful Waterside

The greatest place to let off steam in this sunny climate is along the fun-filled Corniche by the gulf. Walk or bike along the promenade, and soak up the rays between stops at gorgeous gardens or tasty cafés. At the western end of the Corniche, tourists will find the enormous Marina Mall shopping complex and the extravagant, five-star Emirates Palace Hotel -- originally built for the Sheikh. Don't miss the Jumeirah at Etihad Towers, with unforgettable views from the observation deck.

4. Yas Island: Yaaaaaaass!

Take a break from the skycraper metropolis of downtown Abu Dhabi on Yas Island, a breezy recreation zone full of entertainment. Yas Mall houses endless shopping opportunities, while Yas Waterworld offers refreshing fun for the whole family. Formula One races also play out on this island at the Marina Circuit. Nearby, the Ferrari World amusement park is a wild ride, and surely one of the most unique theme parks in the world.

5. Liwa: In a Sea of Sand

Abu Dhabi rises suddenly out of the Arabian Desert in an incredible display of contemporary development, but it is still just a short drive from the serenity of the sand dunes. Those surrounding the Liwa Oasis, the long-time birthplace of the Royal Family, are the largest dunes in the world. Tourists can get their hearts pumping with drag races on this otherworldly terrain, or visit the refuge of the oasis to understand the reality of life in the desert.

June through August is low season due to intense heat. Midday temperatures exceed 100°F with high humidity. Some attractions close or operate on reduced hours. However, hotel rates hit annual lows, making it a good time for budget travelers who don't mind the sweltering weather.

To summarize, November through March is peak season with pleasant weather but more crowds. April, May, September, and October are shoulder season months with fewer tourists and lower prices. June through August brings extreme heat but the best deals.

Abu Dhabi is very safe, especially in tourist areas. Violent crime is rare. How to Pick the Best Abu Dhabi Tour from Dubai (+Our Experience)

Thinking of visiting Abu Dhabi from Dubai for a day and wondering which tour to choose? We had the exact same question on our recent trip – what is the best Abu Dhabi tour from Dubai?

After several hours of research, comparing dozens of itineraries, and reading hundreds of reviews, I can tell you that the choice is overwhelming. There are hundreds of Abu Dhabi tours from Dubai, with widely varying itineraries. You have to read in detail which places you actually visit and which are not more than a quick photo stop. Furthermore, often they also list the sights which you only pass by…

You’ll find private tours and (small) group tours, full-day tours, or those that only take a couple of hours… There is one thing in common – pretty much all Abu Dhabi tours from Dubai visit Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. But the rest of the itinerary can vary from short stops at some local low-key markets to thorough visits to some of the most impressive landmarks…

In this article, we share our hand-picked selection of Abu Dhabi tours that we shortlisted for our own trip , as well as a detailed description of the tour we ultimately chose. I hope that this guide will save you time and help you choose the best tour from Dubai to Abu Dhabi and have a truly unforgettable experience.

TIP: If you don’t want to read the entire article and simply want to see the best of Abu Dhabi on a day trip from Dubai, we recommend this highly-rated tour . It’s the tour that we chose and it was perfect. It brings you to the three main landmarks in Abu Dhabi – Sheikh Zayed Mosque, Etihad Towers, and Qasr Al Watan – and you actually get to visit each of these places and not just pass by or see from a distance, as with many other tours.

Best guided tours to Abu Dhabi from Dubai - helpful info and tips based on personal experience and research

Why Visit & What to See on Abu Dhabi Day Trip

Abu Dhabi is the capital city of the United Arab Emirates. It’s also the richest of the seven Emirates, home to some of the most prestigious projects and remarkable architectural landmarks. So no trip to the UAE would be complete without at least a short introduction to this beautiful city!

Just like Dubai, Abu Dhabi is a quickly growing city with many new attractions, one more impressive than the other. So you have to understand that there is no way to see all the best places in Abu Dhabi on a day trip from Dubai. There are simply too many options and you would need several days in Abu Dhabi if you want to see all the top sights.

So when looking for a day tour to Abu Dhabi from Dubai, you have to decide which of the top sights and attractions you absolutely do not want to miss. Once you make the choice, it becomes easier to pick the right tour that fits your interests.

Here are some of the TOP attractions in Abu Dhabi:

  • Sheikh Zayed Mosque – the most famous landmark in Abu Dhabi, included in pretty much all Abu Dhabi tours.
  • Qasr Al Watan – UAE Presidential Palace (sometimes also referred to as the Royal Palace) – an actual visit inside is only included with very few tours.
  • Etihad Towers . Many tours pass here, but only a few include a visit to the Observation Deck.
  • Louvre Abu Dhabi – the largest museum in the Gulf region, among others, displaying artworks from The Louvre and other top museums in Paris . There are just a few tours that visit here.
  • Yas Island where you can find the following theme parks: Ferrari World , Yas Waterworld , Warner Bros. World , and SeaWorld . This is not the best place to visit on a day trip since you could easily spend a day at each of these theme parks and still not see it all. So if tours from Dubai include Yas Island in their itinerary, at best, it’s a half-day visit to Ferrari World (most tours that mention Ferrari World, usually only stop for a picture at the parking in front of it).

Here are some additional sights sometimes included in some Abu Dhabi tours:

  • Abu Dhabi Corniche – a waterfront road with bike paths and a nice pedestrian promenade. Most tours just pass by here.
  • Founders Memorial – a monument. Most tours just pass by here.
  • Emirates Palace – this luxury hotel (full name – Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental ) is one of the most expensive hotels ever built. Some tours include a visit, but most just drive by.

Good to know: The best Abu Dhabi day tours include a visit to 2-3 of the ‘TOP attractions’. Depending on the tour and how much time you spend at the main landmarks, they sometimes include one or two short stops at some of the ‘additional sights’ listed above.

However, some tours only seem to offer great value at first sight. When you look deeper, you realize that the majority of your time will be spent in the car or with short stops at ‘cultural’ attractions, such as a vegetable and dates market, Abu Dhabi Heritage Village, or local art galleries. While this could be a nice addition to the main sights, there are so many better things to do with just a day in Abu Dhabi than spend your precious time shopping… So choose your tour wisely!

Below, you can find our hand-picked selection of the best Abu Dhabi tours from Dubai.

Best Abu Dhabi Tours from Dubai

As I said, there are so many Abu Dhabi tours from Dubai that the choice can look daunting. Based on the research I did for our recent trip, I made a selection of just a few VERY BEST options. This was my personal shortlist.

Here are some of the best-rated Abu Dhabi tours from Dubai , with a short overview of just the main landmarks that you actually visit:

  • Premium Full-Day Sightseeing Tour (+-9-10 hrs). Includes a visit to Sheikh Zayed Mosque, Etihad Towers, and Qasr Al Watan. This is the tour we chose and can highly recommend if you want to see the most important landmarks of Abu Dhabi in a day. You can also book this same tour including lunch at a traditional restaurant (we had lunch there too and it was excellent).
  • Full Day Tour with Ferrari World (+-10 hrs). This tour includes a visit to Sheikh Zayed Mosque and Ferrari World, as well as a stop at Heritage Village. If you want to see the Mosque and ride some of the fastest rollercoasters in the world, this is by far the best tour. Most others only include a photo stop at Ferrari World.
  • Full Day Trip with Mosque & Louvre (+- 9hrs). Includes a visit to Sheikh Zayed Mosque and Louvre Abu Dhabi.
  • Half Day Tour (+- 5hrs). This popular tour only visits the famous Sheikh Zayed Mosque. It’s a good option if you are really short on time.

Good to know: Most of the tours listed here are small-group tours, but they are also available as private tours . You can choose from different options once you select the number of people and travel dates.

Further below, you can read a short review of the tour that we chose and see some more pictures of the places that we visited on this Abu Dhabi day trip.

Review of Our Abu Dhabi Sightseeing Tour from Dubai

As already mentioned, we chose this highly-rated guided tour for our Dubai to Abu Dhabi day trip.

Just to be clear – we do not organize these tours or have anything to do with the company that runs them. Like you, we are just travelers who do their own research, pay for the experiences we like to have, and hope that we made the right choice.

This Abu Dhabi tour was not cheap, but it brings you to the most impressive places in Abu Dhabi. We felt that it offers really good value. If you want to see the most important landmarks of Abu Dhabi in just a day, then you really cannot go wrong with this tour.

Here is what our Abu Dhabi tour looked like:

Pick up in Dubai & Drive to Abu Dhabi

We booked the tour starting at 8:45 AM. The evening before the tour, I received a WhatsApp message from the tour company informing us that they would pick us up at 8:15 AM.

The driver was on time and we stopped to pick up two other people along the way. He then brought us all to yet another hotel where we transferred to a small bus (our group had 18 people).

Good to know: The drive from Dubai to Abu Dhabi normally takes about 1.5 hours, but it can also take much longer due to busy traffic. The same on the way back.

PRO TIP: When booking a full-day tour from Dubai to Abu Dhabi, don’t make any other plans for that day – that way, you don’t have to worry about busy traffic or potential delays. If you are planning a half-day trip , I would also foresee some buffer time, or opt for an afternoon tour (or a ‘sunset’ tour, as they call it) – that way, you can still do something else in Dubai in the morning.

Abu Dhabi Corniche

Drive through Abu Dhabi

On the way to Abu Dhabi, our guide informed us that we would start our tour with Qasr Al Watan Royal Palace and visit Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque at the end of the day. This is because there was a big cruise ship in town and since pretty much all visitors go to the Mosque, it’s extremely crowded in the morning.

This was a good decision, indeed. By the time we got to the Mosque, it was just pleasantly lively. I can’t imagine what it must look like in the mornings when several gigantic cruise ships are visiting.

On the way to the President’s Palace, we passed Yas Island and could see the famous Ferrari World and other attractions in the distance. We also saw Saadiyat Island with the Abu Dhabi Louvre – also from quite far away. Once in the city center, we drove past the Corniche – Dubai waterfront – and saw the Founders Memorial as well as the Emirati Palace.

You only get to see all these places from the bus, but it gives you an idea of what Abu Dhabi is like.

Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Abu Dhabi

Qasr Al Watan

Abu Dhabi’s Presidential Palace sits in a huge opulent complex by the sea overlooking the city in the distance. The main highlight here is Qasr Al Watan .

This magnificent palace might remind you of the famous Taj Mahal in India, but this one was built just recently – between 2010 – 2017. Its architecture and grandeur will take your breath away!

The palace was built using some of the finest materials including Italian marble, gold, Swarovski crystals, and gigantic handmade carpets. It is absolutely magnificent and I would even say that it’s one of the most beautiful buildings on the planet.

Quite frankly, I don’t understand why it’s not as popular as the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. These two places are just as impressive and both are absolutely not to be missed in Abu Dhabi!

Qasr Al Watan - one of the main landmarks in Abu Dhabi UAE

Our tour guide gave us a short introduction to the Palace and explained where to find the ‘must sees’. After that, we had about more than an hour to explore the palace and its grounds on our own.

This is something I really liked about this tour – we got just plenty of information, but also plenty of free time at each of the landmarks visited.

Good to know: While it is a working palace, it’s mostly used for ceremonial functions and big political gatherings. So the palace is open to the public, except if there is some special political event or a visit by another head of state.

You will have to go through airport-style security here, but you can simply leave all your belongings on the tour bus and just take your camera with you.

Qasr Al Watan Royal Palace of UAE - Abu Dhabi tour from Dubai

Etihad Towers

The next stop on our itinerary was the Observation Deck at the Etihad Towers . There are five skyscrapers here, of varying height. We were told that the five towers represent unity, like the five fingers of a hand. I also read somewhere that they refer to several important Arabic symbols, such as falconry and swords.

In addition to their unique architecture and symbolism, Etihad Towers offer stunning 360° views of the city and the Arabian Gulf from the Observation Deck at 300 meters . It’s located on the 74th floor of Conrad Abu Dhabi Etihad Towers Hotel .

The views from here are spectacular and – in my opinion – more impressive than from most of the viewpoints in Dubai, including the views from Burj Khalifa.

Right below, you can see the entire Presidential Palace complex as well as the Emirates Palace and several other luxury hotels, including Rixos Marina Abu Dhabi which looks like a copy of the famous Atlantis The Palm in Dubai . The seashore and Corniche make the views even more special.

Good to know: Etihad Towers Observation Deck is supposedly just a short stop of about half an hour, out of which you have about 15 minutes to enjoy the views at the top (which sounds little but is actually plenty). However, depending on the queue at the elevators, it might take longer.

View from Etihad Towers Observation Deck - Abu Dhabi day trip from Dubai

After the visit to Etihad Towers, we drove to Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. There is an underground mall here – Souq Al Jami – where you can find a big food court with a wide variety of restaurants.

Before we headed for lunch, our guide quickly checked if everyone was dressed ‘acceptably’ for the Mosque visit and went to get some Abaya (long black dress) and scarves for women.

If you wear long pants/skirt, a blouse that covers your arms completely, and have a scarf to cover your hair, you don’t need this dress. But if your clothes are just not long enough or see-through (even a bit), they recommend wearing the Abaya. So I opted for that, just to be safe.

If you choose the tour that includes lunch , you will have a traditional lunch at the Michelin-star Al Khayma Heritage Restaurant. Otherwise, you can decide where you want to eat when you get there. You will find all the famous fast-food chains here as well as Italian and Mexican restaurants, etc. However, it’s your chance to try some really good Arabian food so we recommend that you go to Al Khayma.

We had lunch at this restaurant, following our guide’s recommendation and everything was delicious.

I read in some reviews that people felt lunch was a bit rushed, but we had about 1h15 which was plenty. I even found the time to quietly put on the Abaya before meeting the guide at the agreed time and place.

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

Sheikh Zayed Mosque is the most famous landmark in Abu Dhabi and a must-see! It’s the finest example of Islamic architecture and is absolutely breathtaking, both outside as well as inside.

As a non-Muslim, you can only visit part of the Mosque, but no worries – you can see the most impressive parts. You are also allowed to view the main worship hall which is nothing short of remarkable.

Here, you can see the world’s largest hand-knotted carpet, ornate decorations, and several impressive Swarovski chandeliers. It’s also incredibly spacious and can accommodate about 40,000 people inside!

If you are a Muslim, you can also go to pray inside, but during the week, the main hall seemed to be empty. The main prayer hall is closed to visitors between noon and 3 pm on Fridays, so tours try to visit before or after that.

Abu Dhabi tour from Dubai - Sheikh Zayed Mosque

As mentioned earlier, the Grand Mosque is one place that is included in all tour itineraries and is visited by pretty much every tourist who sets foot in Abu Dhabi, even if just for a few hours. This means that the Mosque is always extremely busy. Tickets have to be reserved in advance, for a specific time slot, etc.

Because of really bad traffic in Dubai on the day of our visit (it rained the day before which only happens a few times a year and leaves the area in chaos :)), we were way too late for the time slot booked. No worries, though. Everything was rearranged by the tour company while we were having lunch.

We entered without any wait at all and our guide made sure that we had plenty of time inside the Mosque (about 15-20 minutes with a guide and more than an hour on our own).

I liked that they didn’t rush us or cut the tour short and gave us the full experience. This meant that we were back in Dubai later than planned but that was no big deal since it was a full-day trip anyway.

Good to know: Also here, you will have to go through airport-style security. As mentioned before, there is a dress code as well. In general, they recommend long, loose ankle-length trousers or skirts. As a minimum, for men, shoulders and knees have to be covered. For women, the rules are stricter and you have to cover up everything except your face, hands, and feet (which means that sandals are ok).

Our tour provided Abaya dresses and scarves for women, which just made things simpler.

Drive back to Dubai

After our visit to the Mosque, the shuttle brought us back to Dubai. There was plenty of time to rest (or even sleep) on the bus.

Just as in the morning, the bus dropped us off at a place where they had private drivers waiting to take everyone back to their hotels. This way, nobody had to wait longer than necessary. The tour was really well organized and I couldn’t fault anything.

The only issues we had that day were related to exceptionally hard rain that left the roads blank and resulted in really bad traffic. Knowing that it only rains a few days per year in the UAE, the risk of you encountering the same is pretty low. Still, as mentioned before, I wouldn’t make any other plans for the evening – that will make your tour more relaxed.

Abu Dhabi Tour with Kids

If you are travelling with children and wonder if you can do a day tour to Abu Dhabi with kids, my answer is yes, of course. Most tours allow children of any age.

However, which tour to choose also depends on your family situation, how many kids you have, how old they are, etc. In addition, consider how well your children can handle a long bus ride, explore the landmarks, and – not to underestimate – practicalities such as the heat or not being able to use the bathroom or eat whenever they fancy.

That being said, if you can keep the kids busy in the car for 1.5- 2 hours and they can behave at the Mosque or the Presidential Palace, I see no reason why you couldn’t take them.

We did this Abu Dhabi tour with teens and – while they were the only kids in our group – we had no issues whatsoever. They were also truly fascinated by the incredible architecture we saw and truly enjoyed the day (having their phones for the long ride definitely helped though).

When I asked them about their top experiences on this trip, the Abu Dhabi day trip was in their top 3, together with a camel ride in the Dubai desert and a boat ride on the Burj Lake . They also really enjoyed Atlantis Aquaventure Waterpark but ‘ranked’ the Abu Dhabi day trip as a more special experience.

TIP: If you want to take a day trip from Dubai to Abu Dhabi with children, consider booking a private tour. As already mentioned, pretty much all the tours we listed in this article can also be booked as private tours. It will be much more relaxing and you will spend less time in the car since they will pick you up from the hotel and drive directly to Abu Dhabi rather than gathering the whole group in a bus.

Alternatively, look into tours that visit the Mosque and maybe Ferrari World or one of the other theme parks on Yas Island (e.g. this tour ). That way, your tour has something for everyone in the family. That said, with very young kids, consider height restrictions for rollercoasters and similar.

Practical Info & Tips for Abu Dhabi Tours

Here is some additional information you may want to know when considering a tour from Dubai to Abu Dhabi:

  • Most Abu Dhabi tours from Dubai include a pick-up/drop-off at your hotel . Keep in mind that the pick-up time can be up to an hour earlier than the official tour starting time (the same as the drop-off).
  • Pretty much all tours in the UAE include drinking water (on our tour, there was a large cool box full of water on the bus).
  • Keep in mind that entry to Sheikh Zayed Mosque might be restricted at certain times of the day during Islamic holidays and also on Fridays. Qasr Al Watan might also be closed if there are any political meetings at the palace. That’s another advantage of going with a tour – they know the schedules and adjust the visit. Still, you can never exclude a tiny chance of some last-minute changes when visiting places like that.
  • Some Abu Dhabi tours also include Abaya dresses for women at Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, but that’s not always the case. So be sure to double-check that in the tour description if you need one.
  • There is no strict dress code at other places in Abu Dhabi, only at the Mosque. However, if you are visiting the Presidential Palace, they also recommend loose long pants or a skirt and a modest blouse/shirt that covers your shoulders.
  • Take some sunscreen lotion and sunglasses with you. A sun hat can be a good idea as well.
  • Pack only what you need – it will be easier to go through security checks everywhere. Furthermore, you can safely leave other belongings (food, sunscreen lotion, etc.) on the tour bus.
  • There are free bathroom facilities at all the sights we visited on this tour, but not on a bus. They also don’t stop anywhere along the way.
  • You get about 60-75 minutes for lunch on this tour, but depending on the traffic, it can be quite late in the day. So if you need some more energy during the day, pack some small snacks with you.

PRO TIP: There’s one thing we noticed when booking our tour to Abu-Dhabi is that on some days, prices were much higher than on others (this could be related to school holidays, public holidays, and similar). So if you are somewhat flexible, check a few different dates when booking the tour – sometimes, travelling a day earlier or later might save you quite some money.

If you’ve been here for a while, then you already know – I spend a lot of time in the Middle East. And, Abu Dhabi is a place I’ve visited many times over throughout the years.

But, the Middle East is one of the trickiest regions to navigate traveling as a female. It can be hard to know what to wear or how to get around safely.

Top Tips for Visiting Abu Dhabi as a Woman

If you are feeling anxious or unsure about visiting Abu Dhabi as a female, you are in the right place.

Below you’ll find tips about safety, how to dress, where to stay, how to get around, and much much more.

1. Safety for females in Abu Dhabi

The most common concern about traveling to Abu Dhabi as a female centers around safety.

This is understandable, since the Middle East is shrouded in a bit of mystery for westerners and is covered in an unflattering light on most western news channels.

Let me be the first to tell you, you will feel extremely safe when visiting Abu Dhabi as a woman. Both Abu Dhabi and Dubai are safe, clean, and relaxed.

As a solo female in Abu Dhabi, I’ve experienced mostly kindness, a fair amount of curiosity, and a friendly willingness to help.

It is helpful to know, Abu Dhabi has been named the safest city in the world for the sixth year in a row in 2023. So, it is not only my personal experience that Abu Dhabi is safe – it is am=n all around fact.

If at any time you need to review current recommendations on travel to the UAE, you can do so here .

Pro Tip: If you still feel nervous, consider taking this Birdie personal safety device (good for all destinations you may visit as a solo female!) and carry my favorite crossbody bag . It is slash-proof and RFID protective. Both will help you feel super secure!

2. How to dress in Abu Dhabi for women.

Women traveling to Abu Dhabi should come prepared to dress conservatively throughout their stay. While this probably comes as no surprise, it can be tough to known what to wear in Abu Dhabi as a woman!

Luckily, I can help with that. The United Arab Emirates as a whole is quite conservative. But there is also a huge number of expats living here.

This creates a big mix of clothing styles that you’ll observe.

In particular, if you visit Dubai , you will likely notice women here and there not dressed conservatively at all. And, confusingly, they will be relatively near women covered in head to toe abayas and hijabs.

I always advise visitors to any country, but particularly females, to dress in a way that is acceptable to the local culture. I figure, you are a guest in their country, so best to adapt to their norms.

Here are my top recommendations that every female in Abu Dhabi should pack to stay both conservative and comfortable. Think of this as your Abu Dhabi dress code for female tourists.

A Long Kimono

On every single trip I take to Abu Dhabi, I pack a full length kimono that is modest yet stylish, in my opinion.

I love long kimonos, since they cover your hips and waist in loose fabric. This is ideal in Muslim countries so as not to attract attention. It will also keep you cool and comfortable. Get yours here!

A Short Kimono

If you prefer a more casual look,  this shorter kimono , is a great option! It has loose, opaque fabric yet still keeps you covered.

Bonus, I typically use a short kimono as a bathing suit cover up too, when I swim in the hotel pool. Get yours here!

A Plain Tank Top

A tank top like  this simple option  has a not-too-low neckline and is loose enough to breathe – even in the intense summer sun.

Bonus, it comes in loads of colors to choose from, and is super breathable! Get yours here.

Fitted Leggings

A must when visiting Abu Dhabi as a woman is a pair of thick black leggings.  These leggings are soft yet sturdy, with a nice high waistband and opaque fabric.

Pair them with a long and loose top, like either kimono above for modesty. Reuse them for hotel gym workouts, too. Get yours here!

Loose Palazzo Pants

I love love love to pack flowy palazzo pants when traveling to conservative countries with hot temperatures. These are great for hot and sweaty summer days, or for entering mosques.

You can choose everything from bold bright colors to muted tones. Get yours here!

Simple Basic Tees

Toss in at least one shirt like this in a solid color to wear under the kimonos or with printed pants.

The solid color won’t contrast with your patterned clothing and they make mixing and matching quick and easy. Get yours here!

A Loose Cardigan

Definitely add a loose cardigan to your Abu Dhabi packing list, especially if you happen to be visiting in the cooler months.

It’s also great to have on hand for air-conditioned spaces, so I do tend to pack it year round. Get yours here.

A Sheer Scarf

I personally love these sheer lightweight scarves  for the Middle East, as they are more thin and breathable than others. Always have one on hand for entering mosques.

I have this exact scarf in several different colors and love it! Get yours here.

A Heavier Scarf

If you are visiting Abu Dhabi in the winter months, you should also add a heavier scarf to your list.

Nights can get chilly, and this one comes in several different colors. Get yours here!

A Cute One Piece

In hotel swimming pools, bikinis are fairly common. But on public beaches, you may feel more comfortable wearing a  one-piece bathing suit .

This is the best way to cut down on unwanted stares and frankly it just feels more respectful this way. Get yours here!

If you follow the Abu Dhabi dress code for female tourists above, you are bound to feel comfortable, modest, and respectful all at once.

That is the perfect trifecta when visiting Abu Dhabi as a woman!

3. Know that solo female travel in Abu Dhabi is still not so common.

For all the solo women visiting Abu Dhabi and the UAE as a whole, remember – you are an anomaly.

Perhaps you, like me, pride yourself in the fact that you fearlessly solo female travel across continents, excited to explore everything the world has to offer. I hear you, sister! I’m with you!

I would just advise that while you’re visiting Abu Dhabi as a woman, remember that you are an anomaly. In this part of the world, a woman traveling alone is still outside of the norm.

At the same time, don’t let this make you fearful. Here is what to expect.

You will get some curious stares, but besides that, you will mostly be left alone. United Arab Emirates is a Muslim country, and many locals live in Abu Dhabi. These locals will treat you with respect, give you space, but are also willing to help should you need or ask for it.

Be sure to check out my article on what not to do in Dubai , as it is applicable for Abu Dhabi, as well.

4. Where to stay in Abu Dhabi as a female.

The most important thing to know is that Abu Dhabi is extremely safe. So no matter where you stay, you will likely not have trouble, per se.

However, some areas are more desirable for tourists due to the ease of getting to attractions, restaurants, and sights.

For all of you planning on visiting Abu Dhabi as a woman, here are my top three hotel suggestions for both location and safety. I’ll include a budget, mid range, and luxury option below, depending on your specific travel style.

Pro Tip: While hostels were not a thing in the UAE as recently as ten years ago, now they are starting to crop up more commonly. They all generally have female only rooms, which is great for anyone traveling alone as a woman in Abu Dhabi. For shoestring travelers, check hostel prices here !

Budget Option: The Ibis Abu Dhabi Gate

This budget-friendly hotel is perfect for anyone who wants accommodations in a central location without breaking the bank.

The Ibis is a well known chain across the country. This specific hotel offers free Wifi, clean rooms, a sparkling pool, and kitchen facilities in some room options. It is an easy ride away from some of the top sights on this list.

5. How to get around when visiting Abu Dhabi as a woman.

Abu Dhabi is a large enough city that it is unrealistic to walk everywhere when visiting.

Sure, you can walk short distances from your hotel if you are in a central location. But, overall, you will need some type of transportation in order to see everything here.

You have a few options as a tourist in Abu Dhabi. Taxis are widely available around the city, and never seem to be far from where you may be.

If you prefer to book via an app, consider using Uber or Careem. Both are rideshare apps that are available in both Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Check out some reasons on why you might prefer a rideshare app over a taxi in my solo female taxi safety article.

Unfortunately, Abu Dhabi does not have a metro system like Dubai does, so the best fast and affordable options for tourists are rideshare apps and taxis.

6. Top things to do in Abu Dhabi as a woman.

Women, and even solo females in Abu Dhabi, can enjoy just about any of the attractions that groups of friends and families would frequent.

Visitors to Abu Dhabi will have a vast spectrum of attractions to choose from. Outdoor adventures, leisure activities, theme parks, shopping, and cultural experiences are all easy to find here.

So here are some of the top attractions and things to do (that I personally recommend seeing!) when visiting Abu Dhabi as a woman.

You’ll also visit camel farms, which is one of my favorite parts! I really love their unique personalities. Enjoy a traditional dance show, a barbecue dinner, henna, and much more.

Pro Tip: One of my very first safari drivers many years ago was Mohammed, who now owns his own tourism company Aladdin Adventure . In the summer, hit Yas Waterworld.

For the mermaids at heart, or for anyone looking to beat Abu Dhabi’s summer heat, one of the best places to visit is easily Yas Waterworld.

This water park is built to honor the region’s pearl diving tradition, which I was lucky enough to learn about at Ras Al Khaimah’s Suwaidi Pearl Farm . Yas Waterworld offers a wide range of water rides and attractions to keep you entertained all day long

See the art at the incredible Louvre Abu Dhabi.

The Louvre Abu Dhabi is impressive for many reasons, both based on what you see outside as well as in.

Firstly, the architecture is stunning, with a detailed domed roof and slick modern lines. Secondly, the art the museum houses is top tier!

7. Note that your tour guides will likely all be male.

The vast majority of tour guides all over the UAE tend to be male. That holds true in Abu Dhabi.

So if you are visiting Abu Dhabi as a woman, know in advance to expect a male driver and/or guide.

Overall, this should not be a problem, since the traditional Muslim values dictate that a man treat a woman with respect. But if you are taking a tour solo and feel at all uncomfortable, be sure to sit in the back of the car.

Pro Tip: My article on solo female taxi safety has a few gems of wisdom that are applicable to solo females on tours with male guides.

8. Take advantage of “ladies only” deals.

One great thing for anyone visiting Abu Dhabi as a woman is to take advantage of “ladies only” days at local establishments.

Because the UAE is a Muslim country, and comingling of the sexes isn’t encouraged, you will be able to find some ladies-only establishments. Or, at the very least, ladies-only days at establishments.

For example, Yas Waterworks always hosts a ladies only day, as do many local gyms. Some beaches offer ladies-only sections and you’ll easily identify ladies versus men’s salons and barber shops.

If you are going out for a night, many clubs have ladies nights, which offer free entry or free drinks, or a combination of the two.

Pro Tip: To avoid a public snafu, be sure to read my article on Alcohol in Dubai . It applies to Abu Dhabi, too, and will let you know all the guidelines before you drink.

9. The best time of year for visiting Abu Dhabi as a woman.

I can now say that I’ve visited Abu Dhabi in all seasons. Heck, I’ve basically been there in all months of the year, too!

So the best time of year for visiting Abu Dhabi as a woman depends on what you plan to do, or what your preference is weather-wise. Let’s chat about the seasons and options.

In general, the most popular time to visit Abu Dhabi and Dubai is in the winter . But, the best time to avoid crowds is easily the summer.

Here is a season-by-season breakdown on the seasons in Abu Dhabi:

December to February – Winter in Abu Dhabi

Winter is the peak season for visiting Abu Dhabi due to milder temperatures and lower humidity compared to the summer. The region enjoys ample sunshine and warm conditions, with a slight chance of rain.

This is also when Abu Dubai comes to life with a calendar of incredible holiday and outdoor events.

Evenings are cooler, and during the winter months, the ocean may feel too cold to swim in. However, many hotels offer heated pools as an alternative for guests to enjoy.

March to May – Spring in Abu Dhabi

The shoulder season is an ideal time to visit Abu Dhabi. During this period, the temperatures are slightly warmer compared to the summer months, but without the intense heat.

The spring season is a great time to visit Abu Dhabi, as well. You can enjoy the warmer weather and not-so-cold water at the beach while avoiding the winter crowds.

Additionally, travel during these months tends to be more affordable compared to peak season. It’s a win-win!

June to August – Summer in Abu Dhabi

Summers in Abu Dhabi are extremely hot here. The bright sun shines aggressively down with temperatures regularly hovering in the triple digits.

During this season, there are fewer tourists visiting. Spending time on the beach or by the pool is more suitable for those who love the sun and hate the crowds.

Because summer is the low season in Abu Dhabi, you are more likely to get great hotel deals and activity discounts that you would never see in the winter months. So budget travelers, this is your time!

September to November – Autumn in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi begins to cool off in the month of September, with temperatures trending downward the further into autumn you go.

Similar to spring, the weather is warm and sunny but not sweltering, making it perfect for outdoor activities such as an evening desert safari or kayaking in the mangroves . Take advantage of the last deals on accommodations as the tourism season begins to pick up.

10. Visas and entry requirements.

One of the most dreaded rookie moves any traveler can make is not have the required travel documents and visas for any given destination. Ladies, check your requirements carefully.

If you are from the USA like me, note that American women in Abu Dhabi can enter the UAE for up to 30 days on a tourist visa. You can collect this visa on arrival at either DXB, AUD, or even one of the smaller international airports.

Pro Tip: Oftentimes, the airlines from the Middle East will state the exact requirements you will need, both in terms of visas and any health forms. Always double check these against the country’s stated requirements, which you will find here .

The entry process at Abu Dhabi’s international airport (AUH) is extremely simple. There is ample signage and airport agents are willing to help point you in the right direction.

Pro Tip: Keep all of your documents in order by using this handy passport holder . I absolutely love mine and it helps me stay organized even when carrying loads of bags and papers. GET YOUR PASSPORT HOLDER HERE!

Visiting Abu Dhabi as a Woman FAQs

For anyone who still has questions about visiting Abu Dhabi as a woman, hopefully these FAQs will cover them!

Keep reading for some of the top questions about traveling to Abu Dhabi as a woman or a solo female.

What are the rules for female tourists in Abu Dhabi?

There are both legal rules and cultural norms that women visiting Abu Dhabi should be aware of.

For example, don’t eat in public during the holy month of Ramadan. This is strictly forbidden. Additionally, you should avoid taking pictures of certain government buildings and don’t snap any pictures of locals, particularly Emirati women, without express permission. Note that PDA is not allowed in Abu Dhabi.

When visiting mosques, such as the Sheik Zayed Grand Mosque , be sure to cover yourself from head to toe, including a scarf or shawl over the head.

Do female tourists have to cover up in Abu Dhabi?

Female tourists in Abu Dhabi should cover up and remain conservative, regardless of how they dress at home. While there is no strict Abu Dhabi dress code for female tourists, be sure to pack long skirts and pants; scarves and shawls which you will need to enter mosques; and shirts that cover your shoulders, chest and waist.

Note that in order to visit Sheik Zayed Grand Mosque , your whole arms and legs must be covered, as well as your head.
