Special Expanded Edition of Loreena McKennitt’s The Visit

The Visit, the iconic album from Canadian Celtic and world music star Loreena McKennitt is newly available as The Definitive Edition .

The Visit won a Juno Award (the most important music award in Canada) and launched Loreena McKennitt’s international career 30 years ago.

The original album, recorded in 1991, has subsequently sold more than two million copies across more than 40 countries.

“ Thirty years seems like a long time, no matter how you measure it ,” says McKennitt. “ Looking back as through a picture frame, one can better see what that period was in its context. I’ve heard from so many people how this recording became a kind of soundtrack for their lives around the time it was released in the early 1990s .”

The Visit: The Definitive Edition is available in two formats. There is a deluxe limited-edition, hardback book format containing four CDs and one audio Blu-ray disc, a 32-page illustrated booklet and hours of previously unreleased content including the first-ever surround sound mixes of McKennitt’s music.

In addition, there is a 15-track highlights edition available exclusively from streaming and download services, including the original album and six classic songs from The Visit performed live in concert and on radio.

In addition to celebrating 30 years, The Visit: The Definitive Edition marks Loreena’s first-ever surround sound mixes , bringing listeners a whole new, sophisticated and enhanced experience .

The anniversary package includes a Blu-ray audio disc with the original recording rendered in Dolby Atmos® , 5.1 surround sound and a hi-res stereo version .

For customers without a Blu-ray player and sound system, a binaural headphone mix of the original recording can be found on disc four and enjoyed through a standard CD player. These binaural mixes offer listeners a similar experience to surround sound, using stereo headphones.

Dolby has developed this new immersive format, Atmos, that provides the listener with a musical experience comparable to three-dimensional sound experienced in modern cinemas. 

The 5.1 mix is presented in the older, five-speaker plus subwoofer surround sound format with which most home cinema and surround sound aficionados will be more familiar.

The hi-res stereo mix is an uncompressed audio format that allows listeners to enjoy the original stereo mix in a resolution that comes closest to the original stereo studio masters.

The surround mixes were created by the three-time Juno winning engineer Jeff Wolpert at his Dolby Atmos® Studio Desert Fish in Toronto, Canada. Jeff also engineered the original recording of The Visit in 1991.

The original album, recorded in 1991, has since sold more than two million copies, across more than 40 countries, and is viewed as a defining, page-turning moment in the Canadian singer/songwriter’s career.

The Visit: The Definitive Edition is available in two formats: A deluxe limited-edition, hardback book format containing four CDs and one audio Blu-ray disc, a 32-page illustrated booklet, and hours of previously unreleased content, including the first-ever surround sound mixes of McKennitt's music. There’s also a 15-track highlights edition available exclusively from streaming and download services, featuring the original album and six classic songs from The Visit performed live in concert and on radio.

The booklet itself is a treasure trove of memorable content: four essays written by McKennitt, a personal reminiscence of her unconventional rise to fame by former Warner Music Canada executive Dave Tollington, and period archival photos that have never before been published.

In essence this is a ‘revisit of The Visit’ – a kaleidoscope of reflections on the times, places and forces that contributed to its original creation.

“Thirty years seems like a long time, no matter how you measure it,” reflects McKennitt. “Looking back as through a picture frame, one can better see what that period was in its context. I’ve heard from so many people how this recording became a kind of soundtrack for their lives around the time it was released in the early 1990s.”

“In addition to this experience being revisited by many of my fans, we’ve also been able to revisit it in other ways by bringing back some of the original contributors who played different creative and supportive roles, such as Jeri Heiden for graphic design, Tollington for his insightful essay, and our original engineer Jeff Wolpert.”

Writes Tollington: “In short, my time with Loreena was a glorious journey through art, geography, business and heights of success I don’t think either of us ever contemplated at the beginning. So much richly nourishing water flowed under that bridge, both professionally and personally.”

In addition to the original re-mastered recording, the package includes two archival broadcasts on compact disc recorded at Toronto’s Ontario Place and for NPR’s World Cafe. There is also a spoken word disc containing a 1991 interview and a 2020 roundtable discussion with colleagues of the time.

The fourth disc features soundboard recordings of six trio performances, and a binaural headphone mix of the original recording. These binaural mixes offer listeners a similar experience to surround sound, using stereo headphones.

The deluxe, limited-edition package includes acclaimed highlights of McKennitt's concert performances, such as “Bonny Portmore,” “The Lady of Shalott,” “The Old Ways,” “Greensleeves,” and "Tango to Evora", which has been covered and performed by many other international artists.

In the fall of 2019, McKennitt put her career on hold to place more time and attention on civic matters and climate change, while also advocating for stronger legislation to protect artists’ rights and encouraging people to buy their music directly from the artist whenever possible.
