Chrysler Voyager won’t start – causes and how to fix it

2002 voyager no spark

Hello, My 2002 3.3 recently died. I pulled the #6 plug to check for spark and it started up. So I put it back, and it wouldnt start again. I pulled it back out and it started! I let it run awhile with no #6 plug (loud obviously) put the plug back in and it started. I let it cool down and no start! For some reason the PCM is not sending the B- pulse to the coil module when cold, but if I remove plug #6 or #1 the extra speed the motor turns over is enough to trigger the PCM to output B- to the coils. I bought a hand set and there are (primary coil) fualt codes, but no codes for the cam or crank position sensors. Im thinking the PCM is NG as there is no crank/cam sensor trouble codes. The thing starting with no plug is wierd though. Any thoughts?  

2002 don't know how many miles you have but normally i believe the PCM is considered emissions related and warranteed to 80000 miles. Look in your manual .

Difference Between A No Crank And A No Start Condition

I'm sure you've heard the terms: ‘My car doesn't crank’ and ‘my car doesn't start’. Is there a difference between the two? Yes there is! Here's a brief description of both conditions:

No-Start Condition: The engine cranks (turns over) like it wants to start but it never does. The usual culprits are:

• Failed crank position sensor.
• Failed fuel pump.

No-Crank Condition: The engine does not turn over when you turn the key to start your Chrysler/Dodge/Plymouth vehicle. This is usually due to:

• Failed starter motor.
• Failed neutral safety switch.
• Failed ignition switch.
• Locked up engine.

This tutorial is geared toward a cranks but does not start Condition.

No Start Condition Basics

In a nutshell, your 2.0L, 2.4L equipped Chrysler car or mini-van needs 3 things to start:

When either one of the above three things is missing (when you crank the engine), your car or mini-van is not gonna' start.

This basic piece of information will make you aware that you need to see if the problem is being caused by a problem in the fuel system, or in the ignition system, or in the engine mechanical system.

Here are some more specifics:

1.)  Ignition System

• The ignition system is the one responsible for creating and delivering spark. Without spark, the engine will crank but not start.
• The ignition system of the Chrysler 2.0L, 2.4L equipped vehicles covered by this article use a distributor-less ignition system. More specifically, it uses a coil pack type igntion system.
• No power to the ignition coil pack.
• Bad ignition coil pack.
• Bad crankshaft position sensor.
• The Ignition System components can be tested in a methodical way to find out exactly what has failed (if indeed something has).

2.)  Fuel System

• The fuel system is the one responsible with supplying the engine with fuel.
• Fuel pump relay (if equipped).
• Bad ASD (Auto Shutdown) relay (this is the relay that provides power to the PCM and the fuel pump or fuel pump relay).
• The fuel pump can be tested to make sure it has really fried.

3.)  Engine Mechanical System

• The engine pistons and cylinder head valves (and all the other related components like: timing chains, etc.) are the ones responsible for the induction of the fresh air the engine needs for the combustion process.
• Although rare, internal engine mechanical problems can and do cause no-start conditions.
• Blown head gasket.
• Blown engine.
• Broken timing belt.

OK, the list of possible things that can go wrong looks pretty long but it is rare to see (or have) two different components go bad from two separate systems at the same time.

The cool thing is, is that there is a diagnostic strategy that you can use to figure out exactly what's wrong with your particular no-start problem. Let's find out more about it in the next subheading.

The siege was over. As were the gunfights and the desperate dashes to freedom. But for many of the relatives of the approximately 750 hostages released from a Moscow theater this morning, the waiting had entered a new phase.

The mass confusion in the hours after the siege, when sick and wounded hostages were rushed to at least three hospitals in Moscow at dawn, left hundreds of relatives searching frantically for family members across the city.

In the early hours of the morning under a steady rain, relatives of the hostages lined up to scrawl their names and phone numbers across a wet, white sheet of paper meant to serve as a master list that would eventually unite them with their family members.

It was one of the many hastily organized parts of the post-rescue activities today that left people feeling angry and ignored. Two telephone hot lines that were supposed to tell callers where their relatives had been taken were constantly busy. Hospitals did not open their doors to family members, who were left to crowd outside.

At City Clinical Hospital No. 13, a mass of people crushed against the tall black iron gates. Periodically the gates were opened to allow large trucks, some marked ''oxygen,'' and ambulances to pass. The vehicles would sweep through the crowd, forcing people, jostling and shoving, in two different directions. The hospital held the largest number of released hostages -- more than 300.

But even after six hours of anxious waiting, few knew when they would be able to see their loved ones. Some had been told that their relatives were in shock and that they could not meet them or even speak. Many had yet to get word that their family members were even alive.

''There are security guards everywhere,'' said Pavel Platonov, staring intently at a cluster of soldiers through the bars of the gate.

''It's as if they are protecting children from their parents,'' said Mr. Platonov, whose 18-year-old son was still missing at 4 p.m. today. ''It's laughable.''

Toward evening, relatives began passing folded notes through the bars of the gate to Red Cross workers and some police officers to carry to relatives thought to be in the hospital.

Some had dramatic tales to tell. The actor Oleg Abramov, 63, said his wife, Larisa Abramova, a prop handler, locked herself into a tiny service room when she heard shooting on Wednesday evening. She remained in the dark room without water, food or a toilet for 57 hours. When she heard no footsteps, she called her husband on her cellphone. A burst hot water pipe from the shooting on Wednesday filled the small room with steam.

''She had a flashlight,'' Mr. Abramov said outside the hospital. ''She said, 'I don't know how long I can last like this.' It was a question of leaving the room or staying put.'' Late this afternoon, Ms. Abramova's condition was listed as critical.

Approval of the Russian rescue squad ran high, though few today knew the full details of the number of dead or even that many of the civilian deaths -- from a total estimated to be at least 67 -- seemed to be caused by a toxic gas that Russian forces used in their rescue operation. Back closer to the theater complex, a convoy of seven trucks carrying special forces soldiers received a standing ovation from a large group of relatives at 11 a.m.

''We are proud of our country, and of the special Alpha forces,'' said Gleb Gritsai, 17, a student who was waiting for news of his friend Andrei. ''They helped save lives.''

In the gymnasium on Melnikova Street, which served as a makeshift gathering place for relatives during their three-night vigil, strangers hugged each other over white plastic cups of Lipton tea and pizza, corn on the cob and apples served by doting elderly women.

But few could tear their attention away from loved ones, and the blow inflicted by the capture of the Moscow theater. Lyubov Kornilova, who escaped from the theater on Thursday with three small children, was standing at the gate all day today for some sign of the eight adults she had bought tickets to the theater with for Wednesday night.

''The sound of the shooting, it made me sick,'' Ms. Kornilova said.

By later this evening, some people were beginning to receive firm news that their loved ones were in good health. Mr. Gritsai, the student, said he had spoken to his friend Andrei, who was feeling fine. And Aleksei Rostorguyev said he had talked with a nurse on the phone about his daughter Elizaveta, 21, who had last contacted her father at 1 a.m.

''These three horrible nightmare days are over,'' he said with a tired smile. ''I'm shaking now for the first time since it began. You cannot imagine what this experience is like, unless it happens to one of yours.''
