What Is Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon?

Jökulsárlón literally means glacial river lagoon and that is what Jokulsarlo glacier lagoon is, a large glacial lake in southeast Iceland on the edge of Vatnajökull National Park.

It developed into a lake when the surrounding glaciers started receding into the Atlantic Ocean.  Huge blocks of ice break off the glacier and float on the lagoon.

Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon is a stunning sight, blue/green water full of blue, white and turquoise icebergs streaked with black volcanic ash. The icebergs are composed of ice that is over a thousand years old and forms into unique and wonderful shapes.

It’s an Iceland glacier lagoon that looks different every time you visit and is teaming with fish and wildlife in the summer and winter months.  The lake has quadrupled in size since 1970 and is now the deepest lake in Iceland.

Across from the glacier lagoon is the breathtaking Diamond Beach. The icebergs from Jokulsarlon lagoon wash up on the black sand beach and sparkle like diamonds, polished by the waves hence the name Diamond Beach.

It is one of the best places to see on your Iceland Itinerary!

Best Time Of Year For Visiting  Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon

Visiting a glacier lagoon in Iceland is like visiting the rest of Iceland, it depends on what you want out of your trip, your budget and your schedule. In summer Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon is teaming with birds such as the arctic tern and the gull-like skuas who have their nests on the lake’s shores. We have an entire post on the Best Time To Visit Iceland!

In the summer  Iceland is in full bloom and you get to experience the midnight sun and unlimited daylight.   In winter you are more likely to see seals resting on the icebergs, the northern lights and get more snow, but the traveling conditions are likely to be more hazardous.

We feel the best time to go is  September-April, it’s cheaper and there are fewer tourists. You are also more likely to see the northern lights. The best time to get your perfect Iceland glacier lagoon shot is in July and August when the sky is clear.

Ultimate Road trip

Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon

Iceland’s largest glacier, as well as Europe’s most voluminous one, the  Vatnajokull ice cap , has created many glacial wonders, and the most famous of all being the  Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon . When the edge of Breidamerkurjökull, one of its mighty glacier tongues, breaks away, the glacial meltwater feeds the lake at its foot. Huge blocks of ice wander in the cerulean lagoon and then drift towards the ocean. The natural phenomenon contributed to Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon’s ever-changing appearance.

The glacier lagoon is also a natural habitat for wildlife in summer, if you are lucky, you may spot some seals swimming or lying on icebergs, and Arctic Terns chirping near and far.

This area is within the Vatnajökull National Park, a natural wonderland. In winter, blue ice caves are the most popular attractions and Jokulsarlon is the highlight all year round. The unique beauty also inspired many moviemakers, including the creators of two James Bond movies.

The  Diamond Beach , located next to the glacier lagoon, gets the sparkling name from its unique combination of velvety black sands and hard glistening ice pieces. Blocks of icebergs in different shapes and sizes stay silently on the beach as waves come and go, creating a breathtaking rhythm of nature, which can only be found in Iceland. A popular spot for photographers and nature lovers to explore extraordinary Iceland is right in this place.

Glacier Lagoon Amphibian Boat Tour

The amphibian boat tour at Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon is a 30-40 minute excursion, taking you among the floating icebergs. The exciting trip offers a perfect opportunity to explore the glacier lagoon and its essential features up close. You will be accompanied by an English-speaking guide who will share the ins and outs of the geology and formation of the lagoon, and you also get the chance to hold and taste the ice that is at least 1000 years old.

Village of Vík í Mýrdal

The charming Vík í Mýrdal is Iceland’s southernmost town, a seafront fishing village hosting 300 inhabitants that doubles as a great place to rest and recharge. The church of Vik is an iconic landmark on the hill, and to the other side, you can see the majestic Reynisdrangar sea stacks from afar and many gift shops are available, where you can find Icelandic signature souvenirs.

An impressive waterfall with a cascade of 60 meters, Seljalandsfoss is one of the most popular waterfalls in Iceland. Its best feature is a cave behind the cascade, which you can walk through, when the condition allows. This special surprise grants visitors a whole new perspective to appreciate the waterfall and its fascinating view of the surroundings.

Seljalandsfoss waterfall comes from the infamous tongue-twisting volcano  Eyjafjallajökull glacier . As the fall drops from the concave cliff, you might even see a rainbow in the middle of misty air. Just keep in mind to watch your steps as the pathway can get slippery.

Our Jokulsarlon day tour begins with our fast and efficient  pick-up service . We will come to pick you up either at one of the hotels in Reykjavik city center or from one of the designated stops across the city.

Once everyone is on board, we will head out to the south along the beautiful sealine of Iceland for a scenic drive. You will pass by black sand beaches merging with the blue horizon, see white-topped glaciers and mossy lava fields, the entire journey offers some amazing, dramatic landscapes of Iceland.

Our first destination is  Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon . Praised as Iceland’s natural crown jewel, Jokulsarlon is a must-see. It’s fed by the glacial meltwater from the mighty  Vatnajökull glacier , Iceland’s largest and Europe’s most voluminous ice cap, and situated adjacent to the North Atlantic Ocean.

When huge chunks of ice break away from the outlet glacier, they become free and start to drift  into the lagoon. The appearance of Jokulsarlon is constantly changing with the icebergs coming and going, altering colors and shapes. Nature’s artwork.

During this day tour, we invite you to sail with us on an  amphibian boat ride  to see the captivating icebergs up-close. Sailing among the floating shades of blue, and even holding a piece of 1000-year-old ice, this ride is made to be memorable.

Next to the glacier lagoon is the famous  Diamond Beach . The floating icebergs go out to the sea, after a short time left stranded on the black sand beach. There’s also a visitor center close by, you can learn all it needs to know about the area.

After the breathtaking glacial experience, we board our bus and head to  Vík í Mýrdal , the charming seafront village in the south. We will get some rest and food, or you can get some souvenirs for friends and family. Next up, we will go visit  Seljalandsfoss waterfall , another mesmerizing attraction in South Iceland.

This is one of the most popular glacier lagoon tours, and it takes about 14 hours. Just a reminder, there’s no food included in the tour package, but we will make stops on the way so you can get some snacks or meals.

Diamond Beach: Glistening Ice on Black Sand

Optional visit to fjallsárlón glacier lagoon, optional evening northern lights hunt, guided ice cave walk in vatnajokull national park.

Vatnajokull, the largest glacier in Europe, is home to numerous ice caves that are formed by the constant movement of the glacier and the melting of glacial ice and make for the perfect location to witness the mesmerizing beauty of Iceland’s natural ice formations up close.

Your adventure begins by meeting your experienced and certified glacier guide at a designated location near the national park. After a brief introduction and safety briefing, you’ll be provided with the necessary equipment, such as helmets, crampons, and ice axes, to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

The journey to the ice cave typically involves a combination of driving in a specialized glacier vehicle and hiking across the glacier’s surface. As you make your way across the stunning icy landscape, your guide will share fascinating information about the geology, history, and formation of the glacier and its ice caves.

Upon reaching the ice cave, prepare to be awestruck by the breathtaking natural beauty inside. The cave’s walls are made of centuries-old ice that has been compressed over time, creating brilliant shades of blue and unique patterns. You’ll be able to explore the cave’s intricate passageways, marvel at the stunning ice formations, and capture incredible photographs of this otherworldly environment.

Throughout the ice cave walk, your guide will ensure your safety, answer any questions you may have, and provide insights into the ever-changing nature of these remarkable formations.

Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon: Floating Icebergs & Seals

Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, Iceland

Next, your private guide will take you to the Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon, one of Iceland’s most iconic and mesmerizing natural attractions.

This large glacial lake is filled with floating icebergs that have calved from the nearby Breiðamerkurjökull glacier, part of the massive Vatnajokull ice cap. Witness the beauty of these ancient ice formations as they drift through the lagoon and out to sea.

Boat Tour at Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon

Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, Boat Tour, Iceland

A boat tour at Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon is the finest way to experience the surreal and ever-changing landscapes created by the floating icebergs that have broken off from the glacier.

Your adventure begins at the lagoon’s visitor center, where you’ll meet your knowledgeable and experienced guide. You’ll be provided with a life jacket and any other necessary safety gear before boarding the boat. There are two main types of boats used for tours in the lagoon: amphibious vehicles that can drive on land and water and zodiac boats that provide a more up-close and personal experience with the icebergs.

As you set off on your journey through the lagoon, your guide will share fascinating facts about the formation of Jökulsárlón, the glacier, and the icebergs. You’ll be captivated by the striking contrasts of the brilliant blue icebergs against the dark waters of the lagoon and the rugged beauty of the surrounding mountains and glaciers.

During the tour, you’ll have the opportunity to get close to some of the larger icebergs, allowing for breathtaking photo opportunities and a chance to truly appreciate their immense size. Keep an eye out for seals that frequently inhabit the lagoon and can be seen basking on the icebergs or swimming in the water.

Just a short drive from Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon, you’ll find Diamond Beach, a striking black sand beach where icebergs from the lagoon wash ashore. Your driver-guide will lead you on a stroll along the beach, where you can admire the glistening ice formations that contrast dramatically against the black sand.

Capture stunning photographs of this unique landscape, and listen as your guide explains the natural processes that have created this breathtaking sight. The ever-changing ice sculptures make each visit to Diamond Beach a unique experience, ensuring that you’ll never forget your time here.

Fjallsárlón Glacier, Iceland on lagoon private boat tour

For those interested in exploring another glacial lagoon, your driver-guide can take you to the nearby Fjallsárlón Glacier Lagoon. This lesser-known lagoon is a hidden gem, offering a more intimate experience with fewer visitors. Fjallsárlón is located at the base of the Fjallsjökull glacier, and its icebergs are equally impressive as those found at Jokulsarlon.

During your visit, your guide will share more about the area’s geological history and the unique characteristics of Fjallsárlón. This optional visit provides another opportunity to immerse yourself in the awe-inspiring beauty of Iceland’s glacial landscapes.

Northern Lights making glowing green swirls in the sky over iceland

If your tour takes place during the Northern Lights season (typically from late September to early April), you may have the chance to witness the magical Aurora Borealis. Your driver-guide will monitor the aurora forecast throughout the day, and if conditions are favorable, they will take you to the best viewing locations away from light pollution.

Wrap up warm and gaze up at the sky as the Northern Lights dance above you, creating an unforgettable end to your day tour.

There is a short bus ride to the dock. At this point, you’ll fasten your flotation suit or life vest and prepare for an incredible Icelandic glacier tour, taking you to Breiðamerkurjökull Glacier and the deep serenity of the lagoon.

This tour allows a full 60 minutes of cruising on Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon in the Zodiac boat , exploring the majestic sights and seeing the wildlife. In addition to seals, you’re likely to see a variety of bird species. During the summer, you are likely to see Arctic Terns as they migrate. Your guide will also point out graceful Arctic Skuas nesting along the lake’s edge, as well as mighty seagulls.

Drifting between these looming, curiously shaped icebergs on a Jökulsárlón Zodiac boat tour is an enchanting and otherworldly experience, enjoyed by photographers and adventurers alike. On the surface of the icebergs, you will see vibrant blue tones and gray veins, which were formed from ash residue as a result of various volcanic eruptions. Make sure to keep your camera ready at all times so that you’re able to catch the crystal-clear reflections of the icebergs on the surface of the water, as well as the humbling glacier scenery.

Over time, the appearance of the lagoon and surrounding areas could change drastically if the icebergs melt. So, if you’re planning to enjoy a Zodiac boat tour at the lagoon, we recommend making the best of your time here and exploring the area. Take the time to make the short walk to the nearby Diamond Beach. This black sand beach, officially called Breiðamerkursandur, is a truly hypnotic sight. Pieces of the icebergs at Jökulsárlón break off and float to this beach, resting and glistening against the black sand.

Zodiac Boat Ride at Jökulsárlón

icebergs in Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon

Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon is located at the tip of Breiðamerkurjökull, an outlet of the vast Vatnajokull glacier. As the glacier retreats, meltwater fills up the depression it leaves behind. In a process known as “calving,” huge chunks of ice break off the glacier, and the lake fills up with these floating icebergs.

Jökulsárlón is an extraordinary sight. What makes it unique is that Jökulsárlón is connected to the ocean, making it a perfect habitat for seals. The water is also salty and bluer than other glacier lagoons.

Your certified guide will meet you in the parking lot and drive you to the dock. As soon as you arrive, you’ll be given a floatation suit/life vest. We’ll then launch the Zodiac boats and start our exciting hour-long ride. As we set sail, you’ll enjoy stunning views of the glacier with Vatnajökull towering over us on the horizon.

Within no time, the Zodiac boat will carry us into the heart of the lagoon. This dreamy, iceberg-dotted wonderland is filled with glistening chunks of ice that come in all shapes and sizes. Visitors to Jökulsárlón are always amazed by the colors of the icebergs, which light up when the sun hits them. Some icebergs are sapphire blue, while others are crystal-clear, making for some truly remarkable photos.

Zodiac boats are the perfect way to explore Jökulsárlón as their maneuverability means that we can get amazingly close to the icebergs. If you examine the icebergs closely, you’ll see some gray streaks running through them as a memorial to the many volcanic eruptions Iceland has experienced.

Jökulsárlón is also renowned for its incredible wildlife, and our guides will happily point out the friendly family of seals residing in the glacier lagoon. Look up, and you’ll see Arctic terns doing spectacular acrobatics high above our heads, while you may also get the chance to see giant seagulls and Arctic skuas.

Glacier Hike on Falljökull Glacier

small group of people glacier hiking Falljokull

Skaftafell National Park is a green oasis surrounded by spectacular glacier tongues. Here, your qualified glacier guide will meet you at the Booking Center. We’ll drive to the foothills of Falljökull glacier, which will be the starting point for your adventure.

From here, we’ll continue on foot. So, once we gear up with crampons and helmets, we’ll start to walk up to the ice! This hike is a thrilling journey across a wondrous glacial landscape that will provide memories that will last a lifetime. You can expect one of the best panoramas in the world, dotted with mountain peaks, other glaciers, and dramatic volcanoes.

Glaciers are constantly moving and generate a remarkable landscape of winding crevasses, deep moulins, dramatic ice sculptures, and ancient icefalls. Look up and see Hvannadalshnúkur, Iceland’s tallest peak, towering above the remarkable scene. We guarantee that you’ll take some great photos and leave a profound sense of awe at just how majestic nature can be!

Your expert guide will point out the fascinating patterns that have been cut into the landscape by the glacier. They’ll also tell you about how glaciers form and warn you about some of the bleak predictions for their future.

This highly-popular trip is called the Glacier Grand Slam for a good reason. It’s a brilliant combination of the most thrilling adventures a glacier can offer: a glacier hike and a scenic boat ride across a glacial lagoon. This epic tour will undoubtedly tick a few boxes on your bucket list! Join us!

Meeting point

The meeting point depends on which option is chosen during the booking process. If you have chosen the zodiac boat ride at Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon as a first activity, you will need to meet your guide at the Jökulsárlón parking lot no later than 9:45 AM. If you have chosen the glacier hike on Falljökull glacier first , you will need to meet your guide at the base camp in Skaftafell National Park no later than 8:45 AM.

Practical information

Duration : Boat ride: 90 minutes (45 min in the boat); Glacier hike: approximately 3.5 hours.

What our Travelers are saying about Glacier grand slam tour

What is best to wear on our iceland glacier trips.

Iceland is known for unforeseeable weather. It is likely that you can see all 4 seasons in one day. Dressing for that kind of weather can always be demanding, so we suggest dressing in layers. 3 or 4 upper layers are highly recommended, for example, a light t-shirt (preferably wool) next to the skin, then a fleece or heavy wool garment topped off with a waterproof windbreaker. Jeans are not recommended for our trips as they are not suitable for the weather conditions, they become very heavy, cold and uncomfortable to wear when they get wet. Lightweight hiking pants, track pants or long cotton pants are convenient and wear wind/waterproof pants over them. There is high UV and sunlight reflecting off on the glacier so we highly recommend using sunglasses and sunscreen even if it is cloudy. You will need sturdy hiking boots that fit crampons for the glacier hiking tours. If you do not own a pair then we rent out suitable hiking boots as well as a waterproof raincoat and trousers.

Is a backpack necessary on a glacier trip in Iceland?

It is good to bring your own backpack on our full-day or half- day tours. It’s the best carry-on for a small lunch, extra clothes, and other necessary items.

Is a camera allowed on a glacier trip?

The scenery on the tour is full of stunning, breathtaking views that you’ll almost definitely want to capture forever, so you should definitely bring your camera along. Your tour guide will also be happy to take your photo.

Are you allowed to join a glacier hike if you are pregnant?

This is surely a personal choice, we do not deny pregnant women on our glacier trips but we highly recommend you to take a closer look at our trip description and difficulty ratings, they will hopefully give you a better idea. We also recommend you to contact your physician, as pregnant women’s health can be quite different. If you have any further questions or concerns then feel free to contact us.

Is lunch provided on the glacier tours?

Lunch is not provided on any of our trips, therefore we recommend you bring your own lunch , snacks, and a bottle of water (you can refill it on the trip). It is especially important to make sure you bring lunch on our longer trips.

What are crampons?

Crampons enable you to walk on the glacier ice without slipping. They are metal spikes that we attach to the soles of your hiking shoes.

Does Adventures.com have a guide on all of their tours?

Yes, we have specially trained and certified glacier guides on every glacier tour that we offer. And for our 3rd party tours we only partner with operators that meet our quality and safety standards.

Do you provide equipment when taking part in your glacier tours?

Yes, we provide you with all the necessary glacier gear for our glacier hiking tours. Ice axes, crampons, harnesses, and helmets are provided. This will help you to complete the tour safely. The minimum shoe size to attach crampons is EU 35.

Why do we have glaciers in Iceland?

Iceland is known to have a lot of snow and when the snow stays long enough in one place than it turns to ice. Over long periods of time, the ice layers up becoming huge blocks called glaciers. It forms to create ginormous glaciers that sweep across huge masses of land. Iceland is home of the largest glacier in Europe that is called Vatnajökull. The Glacier Guides can tell you more about and everything you need to know about the Glaciers.

What happens if it is raining?

Rain is common in Iceland but we never let the rain be in our way to go forward with our tours. That’s why we highly recommend appropriate clothing so you can stay warm and dry. Nature is out of our control and therefore we need to adapt to the weather. Impressive glacier in Iceland

The lagoon formed naturally from melted glacial water and continues to grow as ice blocks crumble from the ever-shrinking glacier.

As Jokulsarlon increases in size, the retreating glacier visibly demonstrates the effects of global warming, with noticeable receding year after year.

This makes the lagoon and the nearby glacier tongue even more unique, as they will look different each time you visit them.

Diamond Beach by Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon in Iceland

The icebergs that break away from the glacier and fall into the lagoon slowly melt and drift out to sea, where the North Atlantic waves polish them before being washed ashore on the jet-black beach called Breidamerkursandur .

As a result, this black stretch of sand is always covered in translucent, compact ice sculptures that glisten in the sun, much like diamonds. This is why Breidamerkursandur is sometimes called the  Diamond Beach .

Seals can be seen swimming in the lagoon and relaxing on top of icebergs.

The lagoon is also teeming with birdlife , especially during summer, when you see the arctic tern and many other species.

This is not a popular area for puffins. But if you are driving from Reykjavik, you can stop by Dyrholaey lighthouse and Reynisfjara beach on the way to see some puffins if you’re visiting in the summer months.

Remember that the drive along the South Coast to Jokulsarlon is breathtakingly beautiful. Take your time and enjoy the sights.

Jokulsarlon has been used as a shooting location for Hollywood for decades.

Jokulsarlon's icy landscapes have attracted many filmmakers to shoot scenes for their movies in Iceland.

  • Find out more about  movie locations in Iceland

The James Bond films “ Die Another Day ” and “ A View to a Kill ” were filmed at the glacial lagoon. “ Tomb Raider ” was filmed there, too.

Both “ Batman Begins, ” and “ Interstellar ” were shot nearby at the Svinafellsjokull glacier inside Vatnajokull National Park.

Most recently, however, Vatnajokull National Park was used as a filming location for “ The Secret Life of Walter Mitty .” The scenes from this movie that were shot there show Walter supposedly trekking in the Himalayas.

Several commercials and music videos have also been shot at Jokulsarlon, such as Bon Iver's Holocene, Justin Bieber's I'll Show You , and the music video to Gerua from the Bollywood film Dilwal e starring Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol.

To reach Jokulsarlon, you can either drive yourself or join a tour that takes you to the lagoon .

If you are driving from Reykjavik, note that it's 236 miles (380 km) to reach the glacier bay in Iceland. It can take anywhere from five to six hours.

The drive itself is incredibly scenic, so it may take you longer to get there, given all the great stops you'll want to make on the way. We, therefore, recommend spending at least two days traveling from Reykjavik to Jokulsarlon and back.

We highly recommend this 2-day tour which includes transportation and accommodation . It will take you to Jokulsarlon and stop at the best South Coast spots along the way. You’ll get to visit a stunning blue ice cave and enjoy opportunities to see the northern lights.

The drive is one of the most stunning journeys in Iceland. You'll pass by some incredible South Coast scenery, including the gorgeous waterfalls Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss , the black beach of Reynisfjara, Myrdalsjokull glacier, and Eyjafjallajokull volcano.

Diamond Beach by Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon

There are so many places to explore on the way, so we have several suggested self-drive itineraries  to maximize your experience.

A 6-day self-drive tour of the South Coast and the Golden Circle will help you make the most of your trip to Iceland if you’re planning on staying for at least a week in the summertime.

If you plan to visit in winter, a 6-day winter drive is our recommendation, as it includes access to the ice cave by Jokulsarlon. While there, why not try out a Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon ice cave tour ?

If you are looking for a shorter trip, there's also a 3-day winter drive that includes a visit to the ice cave.

However, if you’re looking for a specific itinerary we don’t currently provide, contact us, and we can customize a self-drive plan specifically for you.

If you want to plan for yourself, we can help you find a cheap rental car for your adventure.

Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon during summer.

Jokulsarlon is accessible all year round, although it may be a little more weather-dependent in winter.

If there's a raging snowstorm or high winds , it’s best not to drive.

Most days, however, you'll be fine. The roads along the south coast are typically clear all year. There is a bit of traffic, so someone will surely stop by quickly to help you out if you run into trouble.

An icy view of Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon

The advantage of traveling in winter is catching the northern lights .

A considerable part of the fun of exploring Iceland is the journey. You must keep up to date with weather and road conditions (checking each daily is best) and be prepared to change plans if your safety is at risk.

But spending some time at Iceland’s crown jewel, Jokulsarlon, is well worth the journey.

If you don't want to drive yourself, you can always book a tour, such as a 3-day South Coast adventure or a 2-day winter tour with ice caving .

If you’re feeling more adventurous, you can also include glacier hiking on a 2-day tour to Jokulsarlon . This provides the most breathtaking views as you stand on top of Europe's largest glacier.

Things to Do at Jokulsarlon Glacier

Visitors can do many different things when visiting the Jokulsarlon lagoon and glacier. What to do depends on how much time is available and what types of experiences are of interest.

Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon boat tours operate in the summertime, between April and October.

They're the same boats used in “ Tomb Raider ” and were featured in the clip above.

An amphibious boat cruises through the glacier lagoon.

During the high season (July and August), up to 40 boat trips run Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon tours per day.

You can choose between going on an amphibian boat tour that leaves multiple times per day or a Jokulsarlon Zodiac boat tour with a fixed schedule.

Individuals don't need to book the amphibian boat tours in advance, but groups larger than 12 people will need to book ahead.

The Zodiac tours can sell out, so it's best to book them in advance as they only operate from June to September.

Natural ice cave in winter near the glacier lagoon

To get even closer to nature, booking a Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon kayak tou r is something you won’t forget. This tour happens in the summer months only and allows you to move between the floating pieces of ice and get up close and personal to the glacier.

It’s possible to go on an ice cave tour from Jokulsarlon and explore a natural blue ice cave within the Vatnajokull glacier.

The ice caves form when the glacier is melting and rivers run underneath the ice, sculpting the ice into a tunnel.

Each cave is different, but they all share an incredible shade of blue ice.

As the glacier moves, it creates different-looking ice caves each year and there are multiple ice cave tours which you can take during your visit. No two visits are ever the same when exploring.

Another ice cave in Iceland

Most ice caves are only accessible from mid-October to March each year, although some operators do not start until November, and tours are dependent on the weather.

Top Ice Cave Tours

If it's too warm, the caves can fill with water, melt or even collapse in places, so you should never enter an ice cave unless you're with a guide that knows the area and the cave has been deemed safe to enter.

One of the best-known caves is the Blue Ice Cave . It's also one of the more extensive caves and forms in a similar position from the same meltwater system each year.

You can go there from Jokulsarlon. Your tour will include a guided super jeep ride to reach the ice caves opening high up in the glacier.

The guide will also explain everything to know about Iceland’s glaciers and the ice caves and answer all of your questions.

The tour departing from Jokulsarlon is the only one that visits this particular cave, providing visitors with the opportunity to enjoy it far away from all the crowds.

Northern Lights over Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon

Jokulsarlon is also a popular place to try and catch the northern lights dancing in the skies above.

The scenery creates a phenomenal foreground for photographers, often with the auroras reflected in the water and the ice.

On intense aurora shows, it can light up the entire lagoon with dancing colors, including green, pink, red, purple, and blue. This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime aurora viewing opportunity.

Auroras over Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon

The northern lights occur all year but are only visible when dark. Therefore, they can’t be seen when the nights are bright in the summertime.

You can view the aurora in Iceland from early September until mid-April, depending on a clear sky and how active the northern lights are .

Check out our 5-day winter package that includes the glacier lagoon, hunt for the northern lights, ice cave, and much more to help make your visit to Iceland genuinely spectacular.

Top Boat Tours

Jökulsarlon is Iceland's deepest lake.

You can easily book a stay near the Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon if you plan to stay in the area overnight.

One of the closest establishments is the Hali Country Hotel . It's located in the countryside, and all of the rooms come with private bathrooms.

If you’re traveling on a higher budget, Fosshotel Glacier Lagoon is a stylish, four-star hotel in the area. The hotel has all the amenities you could need, plus a waterfall right outside.

Hotels and hostels close to the lagoon tend to book up very early.

If you aren't fortunate enough to get a room at one, the second most convenient option is to stay at the nearby town of Hofn (an hour away from Jokulsarlon).

If you were planning on traveling the Ring Road or wanted to finish your day in a place with a wealth of amenities, the town of Hofn is an excellent choice. It's home to the best-tasting lobster in Iceland and close to the stunning Vestrahorn mountain .

Diamond Beach is one of the most beautiful photography locations in Iceland.

Hofn also has various lodgings to suit different budgets and styles.

Hotel Hofn is a lovely hotel for those who prioritize comfort.

If you are traveling all around Iceland, and Jokulsarlon is just one of the many places you plan on staying, you’ll always find plenty of places to stay on your route .

There's one primary safety measure you should know when you go to this ice lagoon.

It should go without saying that it's not wise to swim in a lake full of enormous icebergs or climb on top of those icebergs . But many people are tempted to do so.

People sometimes underestimate Icelandic nature and find themselves in dangerous situations, often needing the aid of some of Iceland's search and rescue teams .

So don't be tempted to do what many film characters or singers do (such as James Bond, Shah Rukh Khan, or Justin Bieber) and swim in the lake or climb on top of the icebergs.

Have a great time when you visit but keep in mind the current in the lagoon is powerful and can easily carry you out to sea. The lagoon is 656 feet (200 meters) deep and is Iceland's deepest lake. What you see of the massive icebergs floating in the lagoon are just their tips as 90 percent of the ice is below the waterline.

Sometimes icebergs tip over when the ice underneath the water surface becomes smaller than what’s seen above the surface. This occurs due to the cracking or melting of ice.

If people climb to the top of the ice and then the ice tips over, they can get caught underneath the ice and be in a life-threatening situation.

That's not worth a good picture!

Take care and enjoy this gorgeous location, making sure you avoid doing dumb things on your visit to Iceland .

Whether you opt to drive, plan your journey, book a self-drive, or take a guided tour, a visit to the Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon is one not to be missed. It’s known as Iceland’s crown jewel for a reason, and many people go there at all times of the year to enjoy its splendor. We’d love to answer any questions and read about your experiences in the comments below.

Beautiful Evening

The sites were amazing, the food was very good (not spectacular), our server was slow but very willing to talk to us and answer questions on Russia. We had a fantastic evening!

This works whole year because the ships are icebreaker types. Two-two and a half hours ride. I dont know how much It costs because my company paid for it but it was very nice. Excellent night view of most famous Moscow buildings. We had dinner which is tasty but in small quantities. The staff were little bit slow. If you are with your love one it can be very romantic.

We decided to pay the extra to do the 'First Class' experience, which basically means the top deck of the boat is for first class passengers and is fitted out with lovely furniture, table linens, and has its own toilet/cloak room and deck and what appears to be a good menu. It only has a limited amount of tables for diners therefore keeping it an intimate experience. At least it would have if people from the lower deck did not come into the lounge to take a short cut out to the upper outside deck and use our toilet! The food is not cheap and was very disappointing, everything is charged for. I m used to paying extra for bread, however a separate charge for butter, and tomato sauce is ludicrous. we ordered our dinner at the start of the cruise we received it 30 minutes before we were due to dock on our return. In fairness the crew did say that we did not have to disembark until we had finished it. I don't think I have ever had such a poorly cooked chicken, it was dry, tasteless and lacked breast meat. Husbands lamb cutlets were fine as was his vegetables (again individually priced. We were then given to drinks which we did not order and explained this, we were told there would be no charge as it was there mistake, however the charge remained on our bill. I would not recommend eating the food in first class for the reasons given. I expected better from The Radison brand, however the trip along the river is a good experience as you are able to see some lovely architecture from the river.

Get to see all the main sights of Moscow without freezing. The boats are warm, the food is decent (beware of seafood pasta, soups were really good) and the service is friendly. Really good dinner option.

If you want to sit down, relax and eat/drink at the same time. See the city from the boat while enjoying your dinner

Nice trip @night

I cruised around 8pm. , I think you can see the light and feel relax. You can order vary kind of drink and food. I think seafood has some smell but spagetthi menu is ok. Draft Beer is sour, I dont know why? Alcohol price is pretty high .

Nice trip, especially the early night cruises with the sunset. Specially with this boat company was that you could (and should) bring your own drinks with you

This wonderful trip had been on my bucket list for years, and had been something that my (late) husband and I had begun to look at prior to his life ending illness. Fortunately for me when I enquired I found that this cruise still had a 'special fare for 1 week'. It was, 'waiving the single supplement'. This made me decide on the spot to go ahead with plans and I used some of that 'saving to upgrade my self into a cabin with a balcony'. It was also made easier because it was almost 9 months prior to my leaving date. I was collected from the airport and from the moment I stepped on board there was absolutely nothing that I could fault with the journey. On day two of the River Cruise I slipped in Moscow in the rain and broke my arm. The ship's management arranged for me to attend a medical clinic, where it was decided that I could continue my journey with my arm immobilised and having regular checks at St Petersburg and London (which was all part of my extendedUK/ European tour but of course not all on the Cruise). The entire staff on board were amazing and helped me with the 'little things' - tying up shoe laces, helping me put on a jacket and kitchen staff cut up meat on my plate. (I just couldn't manage any of these items). I only paid for 2 extra trips whilst on board, with all the included ones (at least 1 every day) being not only beautifully scenic, but historically interesting as well. If I decide to travel on another River Cruise, I will defintely be looking to book with Uniworld..

boat tour jokulsarlon glacier lagoon

As part of Dinner in a congress in Moscow, we visited the Moscow River and a cruise with a dinner on the go, along with live musice and fire-works had been pre-arranged. It was a most pleasing experience and we enjoyed the top deck, with live music adding to the impact. We could easily and convincingly appreciate all the important land marks without having to go to the trouble of getting stuck in traffick for hours. The food was served as a multi-course dinner and the quality was excellent. However, the staff on duty had no match... so courteous and so polite... and efficient. We enjoyed the event to the fullest and the end of the cruiser actually was felt like a saddening turn. Anyway, overall it was a great and very enjoyable experience.

Almost all the important historic and contemporary landmarks of Moscow are strategically built along the river Moskva. We booked the river cruise and it was a good decision. It started raining after sometime but the journey continued and we watched the city and the historic buildings pass by while sipping hot coffee. . Once the Sun was out we could go on the deck and click pictures . The service was non intrusive and polite. I recommend the cruise as you could see the same structures from a different angle and a different perspective.

boat tour jokulsarlon glacier lagoon

Took a one and a half hour river cruise which was very enjoyable. Just to sit and relax and see a lot that Moscow has to offer is amazing. Along the river there's lovely pathways to walk and enjoy the views and scenery. One the boat itself one could purchase items to eat and drink. Not sure of the fare as I came on a tour organized by the university which included some touring. I'm glad I went on this cruise as it is really worth the while
