Virtua Tennis: World Tour  ( Power Smash: New Generation  in Japan) is a  tennis   video game  which was released for the  Sony   PlayStation Portable .

Virtua Tennis: World Tour  was first released on 1 September 2005 in Europe with a North American release following shortly afterwards on 6 October. It was later released in Japan on 26 January 2006 under the title  Power Smash: New Generation .

The game features 14 real-life professional tennis players, four court surfaces (with multiple arenas of each surface) and multiple game modes.

This is the main 1-player mode of  Virtua Tennis: World Tour . In this mode, the players create one male and one female character for use in all tournaments in the game to become the No. #1-ranked player in the world. In between tournaments, skill levels may be raised by competing in a variety of quick minigames.

Quick Match

As it sounds, Quick Match just throws into a match, automatically selecting the players and court.

A few minigames for a short play time. These are Blocker, Balloon Smash, Fruit Dash and Blockbuster.

The players select a player and attempt to play through 6 matches in order to win a tournament. Courts are automatically selected. There is also a retry option which enables the player to try to win again and again.

The player selects a player, opponent and a court.

Multiplayer

Using the PSP's  Wi-Fi  capabilities, up to 4 players can compete in a tennis match.

Virtua Tennis: World Tour Review

It's more of the same, but that doesn't stop Virtua Tennis: World Tour from ranking with some of the best tennis games on any platform.

By Ryan Davis on October 21, 2005 at 6:08PM PDT

If the sole objective of a game for a handheld system like the PSP were to emulate an existing console video game, then Virtua Tennis: World Tour would be a smashing success. Everything found in Tennis 2K2 for the Dreamcast (which became Sega Sports Tennis upon its arrival on the PlayStation 2) can be found in World Tour. Despite the relative age of the source material and the number of times Sega has trotted it out already, the gameplay is still zippy and fun, and the whole package generally feels pretty fresh, thanks to some subtle tweaks.

It may not be particularly new, but Virtua Tennis is still a ton of fun.

It can be taken for granted that World Tour will be instantly accessible for those with prior Virtua Tennis experience, though even first-timers will find the controls to be both intuitive and responsive. You can use either the D pad or the analog stick for player movement, and when you're charging up for a swing, the direction you hold will influence the trajectory of the ball. The X, square, and circle buttons on the PSP correspond to three different swing types, though beginners can just use the standard topspin shot to get by for a while. Sooner or later, though, you'll meet an opponent who will clean the court with you if you don't also learn how to take advantage of the lob and slice shots. This is actually very indicative of how Virtua Tennis handles the learning curve on the whole. Basically, even if you don't know what you're doing, you can pick up the fundamentals and have fun for a while, though the game never stops gently nudging you to improve your overall play.

The gameplay generally values visceral, fast-paced action over accuracy of simulation, but that's never stopped the Virtua Tennis series from loading up with real-life tennis pros. The 14 pros found in World Tour include current tennis stars Andy Roddick and Maria Sharapova, who are both making their first Virtua Tennis appearances, as well as old hands like Tommy Haas and Lindsay Davenport. And you can play as any of the 14 pros right off the bat in the tournament and exhibition modes, both of which do what their names imply. Tournament mode lets you choose either a five-stage singles tournament or a three-stage doubles tournament, while exhibition mode puts you in a single game against the player of your choice on the court of your choice.

But, really, the tournament and exhibition modes are just warm-up for the world tour mode, which is where you'll likely be spending most of your non-multiplayer time. Here, given a handful of faces, skin colors, hairstyles, and some limited control over height and body weight, you create both a male and a female avatar before proceeding to take both to the top of the world tennis ranks. When you first start out, your players are scrubs. So even if you're the best Virtua Tennis player on this little blue planet, you wouldn't be able to compensate for these players' slow foot speeds and weak swings. The only way to get better is to repeatedly play through the eight different minigames scattered across the globe, each of which helps you improve very specific skills. There's a role-playing-game element at work, and almost every time you hit the court in one of these minigames, you'll gain a little more skill in an area of focus, even if you don't meet the requirements for "success."

It doesn't hurt that the minigames themselves are actually quite unique and fun, with challenges like dodging a barrage of big red balls or crushing a number of soda cans with your feet while keeping a volley going. Of course, the minigames are there to help prepare you for the full tournaments you'll compete in, where victory will net you a higher ranking, as well as some cash, which can be spent on a wide array of clothing and tennis gear. The world tour mode maybe isn't as engrossing as it was the first time we saw it in Tennis 2K2 for the Dreamcast, but it still serves as a great stage for the gameplay.

New to the Virtua Tennis package is the ball games mode, a collection of four skill-testing minigames that have much the same spirit as the minigames found in the world tour mode. It would have been nice if you were provided with some kind of motivation other than a high score, though the Tetris-inspired blockbuster minigame is good enough to stand on its own. Virtua Tennis: World Tour also includes ad hoc Wi-Fi multiplayer support for up to four players. You can engage in regular singles, doubles, and mixed doubles matches here, and the gameplay generally seems just as snappy as in the single-player game, though we did notice some slight lag during the serve sequence.

Perhaps it's because the game is being played on the small PSP screen rather than a standard television, but Virtua Tennis: World Tour almost looks better than the full console game it's derived from. Since Virtua Tennis lives in the vacuum of the tennis court, it's able to build out all the different courts with clean-looking textures and smooth geometry. The tennis players themselves, while not always capturing the countenance of their real-life counterparts, feature a good amount of detail and some animation that is preternaturally fluid and realistic. There are other nice, minor touches, like marks left on the courts by the ball and by players' sneakers, or the way the court will darken slightly as the shadows of clouds occasionally pass over the court.

The new ball game mode represents one of the more prominent additions to World Tour.

There may be a lot of old content in here, but the only piece of it that really feels dated is the sound design--or, more specifically, the music. Though it only surfaces erratically, it has a real specifically dated sound to it, and its combination of breakbeats and rock guitars sounds like it traveled in to the future from 1998. The actual in-game effects, such as player grunts and racquet reports, while recycled from prior Virtua Tennis games, still sound sharp and realistic.

It's ultimately still more of the same old Virtua Tennis, and players who have had their fill of Tennis 2K2/Sega Sports Tennis might be reluctant to revisit what is essentially the same game one more time. This familiarity, though, is only a hindrance to a select few, and it certainly doesn't prevent Virtua Tennis: World Tour from ranking up there with the best tennis games on any platform.

  • Leave Blank
  • Captures the accessible Virtua Tennis gameplay style
  • World tour mode provides hours of single-player fun
  • Great-looking visuals--smooth animations especially stand out
  • Maria Sharapova!
  • Basically a rehash of Tennis 2K2
  • Music feels exceptionally dated
  • Ball game mode not as fleshed-out as it could be

6. Virtua Tennis 4 World Tour Mode

From the Main Menu, select World Tour. You will first need to create your player, but feel free to stick with a Male Albanian born in the year 2000 named Virtua Tennis if you want. When ready, proceed to the World Tour.

You will embark on a four-season journey to find glory in the four major tournaments. To do so, you must raise your rating. Your match results, relations with fans, volunteer activities -- all of your actions affect your rating. Manage your schedule wisely in your quest for tennis glory.

Participate in the World Tour

World Debut

You will be given a coach, who will give you various pieces of advice to earn more stars and play through the mode. These are detailed below.

If you select View Map, you can have a look at the region to see what kind of events you will be faced with. Each season is split up in to three parts, with three major tournaments. You can skip the first two tournaments of each season by taking detours (or simply miss them due to lack of stars), but the final tournament of the season is mandatory, though it may require qualification.

There are four seasons for each playthrough. You only have a certain amount of days in each Season (e.g. 70 for the first season, 55 in the second season). If you do not reach the big tournament within this time, you will be inflicted a star penalty. The star penalty increases depending on just how late you are. Do not worry, you cannot actually miss the tournament.

If you are ranked high enough at the end of the fourth season, you will be invited to a post-season, which also includes The King of Players, allowing you to earn more stars and money. After the four seasons, you will unlock the "World Tour Cleared" achievement, regardless of whether you qualify for the final mini-season or not.

Clear the game

World Tour Cleared!

To move around the world, you need to use 'movement tickets'. These tickets will move you a set distance. Be tactical and use tickets to land on better spaces. Replacement movement tickets have random distances, so there is no definitive way to play through this mode. You can also purchase movement tickets from the Management Office (1 space and 2 space), which can be used to make it easier to land on specific spaces.

Be sure to use Rest spaces too to restore your Condition as all activities will deplete your Condition Gauge, which is found at the top of the screen. The Management Office allows you to buy specific cards for use along the way (such as Recovery Ticket or Shuffle Ticket). If your Condition Gauge drops below the line, you may receive injuries, so be careful!

Training Games and Play Styles

Besides the tournaments, there are many other events that occur throughout the World Tour.

One of the most important, especially early on, is Training Games. These are used to improve your skills and earn Play Styles. See the Party Games page for tips and solutions for each of the associated achievements.

Different training sessions will give experience to specific areas. For example, Clay Shooting gives mostly Stroke Exp. Doing well in a certain training game will level it up (two or three times needed), allowing you to choose higher levels next time you land on a space. Once you reach Phase 10 of a skill, you can select a Play Style. Select a Play Style Lesson from the Locker Room (My Club) to unlock "My Style".

Acquire a play style

My Style

Earning Stars

Training Games do not earn you stars. You will need stars to qualify for tournaments, earn achievements and extend your playthrough to the post-season. You should aim to win any tennis matches to win experience and fans, as well as those precious stars. You will also want to participate in charity events, public training sessions and interviews to earn stars.

Check the Scheduling menu for key information about upcoming tournaments. More stars also gives your player a higher seeding, placing them in more favourable matches in tournaments. The first tournament you will face however is the Singles Tournament - Satallite Tournaments, which is available to all players, regardless of stars. You will be sent messages when you can qualify for the larger tournaments.

You will want to aim for 750+ stars in total. The Management Office also allows you to hire an agent, which helps to boost your stars.

0-24 Stars - Novice. 25-49 Stars - Rising. 50-74 Stars - Advanced. 75-99 Stars - Lively. 100-139 Stars - Hopeful. 140-179 Stars - Promising. 180-219 Stars - Ambitious 220-259 Stars - Competent. 260-299 Stars - Popular. 300-339 Stars - Talented. 340-379 Stars - Famous. 380-419 Stars - Renowned. 420-459 Stars - Shining. 460-499 Stars - Great. 500-549 Stars - Marvellous. 550-599 Stars - Accomplished. 600-649 Stars - Tennis Hero. 650-699 Stars - Star Player. 700-749 Stars - Big Star. 750+ - Ultimate Star.

Doubles Partners

At some point during the game, you will be introduced to your automatically-assigned doubles partner. Other players will offer to be your partner if you complete their tasks, such as playing a training event against them. Play training events such as Bomb Match, Coin Match, Wall Match, and Wind Match, as these are ones where you will face an 'opponent'. You must become partners with three NEW players. The default player does not count. This total carries on over playthroughs, so do not worry if you cannot team up with three players in one playthrough.

Acquire 3 doubles partners

Good Partner

At the end of each season, awards will be given for: - Number of tournament victories. - Speed in reaching the four major tournaments. - Number of MAX serves. - Number of points earned with Smashes. - Number of points earned with Super Shots. - Number of charity events attended.

You need to win a total of 20 Awards across all Seasons and Playthroughs for the "20 Awards" achievement. This total is cumulative. After you finish the World Tour, the total carries over to the next playthrough. Depending on how you play, you will average 4 or 5 per season. It's possible to get to 20 awards in one World Tour, but it is likely you will need at least a second playthrough. As with all achievements, you can check your progress via the Medals menu within My Club.

Earn 20 awards

20 Awards!

Additional Playthroughs

It is possible that you still need some more World Tour achievements, so when you return to the main menu, start a new World Tour with the same player. Many of the stats will roll over to your next playthrough, including money, doubles partners, and Exp for skills. Your stars will be reset though. Start buying as many cheaper items from the Kit Catalogue as you are able. A total of 50 purchased items is required for the "Shopaholic" achievement. This achievement can be completed with a minimum of around 50,000, but as with many of the achievements, spans across many playthroughs.

Purchase 50 types of items in the Kit Catalogue

Shopaholic

Once you have the above achievement, you don't need to spend any money any more. Focus on events and tournaments to earn money. You will need a total of 1,000,000 total prize money. This includes money you have spent before, and may take 3 playthroughs in total (or more if you fail to win the major tournaments). Special matches and Charity matches are particularly good for earning money. The more fancy dress clothing you have for the Charity matches, the more money you earn.

Earn 1,000,000 in total prize money

Congrats, you finished the World Tour! You can now look forward to a gruelling online experience on the next page...

Originally posted by >υкм<Sonic-Tooth : Okay, thanks, will try that! And just to be clear, that method will allow me to play the World Tour, and more specifically will allow me to save my progress as I go along, and save my created player profiles in World Tour mode? Because, I could always open the game, an even play Exhibition mode, no problem. I could also start a World Tour player profile. The problem is, I can't save my progress in World Tour, without a Games for Windows Live profile. When I quit the game, and then open it and go back to World Tour, my player profile is gone. Hope your method can help circumvent this? Will it allow me to save progress in World Tour without using GFWL? Thanks for your help and advice!
