1 . Question

Consider the following statements.

  • Food Safety and Standards Regulations, 2020 restricts the sale of high in fats, salts and sugars (HFSS) foods in school canteens /hostel kitchens, or within 50 metres of the school campus.
  • National Commission for Protection of Child Rights has the power to issue notice to companies regarding misleading advertisements, packaging and labels of food products.
  • India has prioritised the promotion of healthy foods and an active lifestyle through Poshan 2.0.

How many of the above statements is/are correct?

  • a) Only one
  • b) Only two
  • c) All three

Solution: c)

India has prioritised the promotion of healthy foods and an active lifestyle through its initiatives such as Eat Right India, the Fit India Movement, and Prime Minister’s Overarching Scheme for Holistic Nutrition (Poshan) 2.0.

As children are more exposed to the advertising of unhealthy foods, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) released the Food Safety and Standards (Safe food and balanced diets for children in school) Regulations, 2020, restricting the sale of HFSS in school canteens/mess premises/hostel kitchens, or within 50 metres of the school campus. Recently, the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights also issued notice to a health drink giant to evaluate and withdraw all misleading advertisements, packaging and labels that brand the product as a “health drink”, citing the product’s high sugar content that can adversely impact the health of children.

2 . Question

  • In India heat wave is declared if the maximum temperature reaches at least 40 degrees C in any region.
  • El Niño weather condition is likely to weaken the impact of heat waves.
  • The wet bulb temperature is the lowest temperature to which a surface can be cooled by water evaporating from it.

Solution: b)

Statement 3 is incorrect.

A period of abnormally high temperatures is called a heat wave. The IMD declares a heat wave if the maximum temperature of a weather station reaches at least 40 degrees C in the plains and at least 30 degrees C in hilly regions, with a departure of around 4.5-6.4 degrees C from the normal maximum temperature. The IMD can also declare a heat wave if the actual maximum temperature crosses 45 degrees C, and a ‘severe heat wave’ if it crosses 47 degrees C.

Qualitatively, a heat wave can also occur when the temperature of the air becomes fatal to the human body.

Heat waves in India are typically recorded between March and June, and tend to peak in May.

The ongoing El Niño weather condition also contributes to higher-than-usual temperatures, driving an increased occurrence of heat waves.

The heat itself can be deadly outside a heat wave if the wet bulb temperature crosses 30-35 degrees C. The wet bulb temperature is the lowest temperature to which a surface can be cooled by water evaporating from it. In other words, it’s the lowest temperature to which the surface of the skin can be cooled by sweating. Beyond this threshold, even short periods spent idling in ambient conditions can have deadly health effects.

  • Digital Infrastructure for Knowledge Sharing (DIKSHA) is an initiative of National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT), under the aegis of the Ministry of Education (MoE).

Solution: a)

What is PAL?

Personalised Adaptive Learning (PAL) is an educational approach that uses technology, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), to customize the learning experience for individual students based on their unique needs, abilities, and progress .
