Buying a Mexico Sim Card: Everything You Need to Know in 2024

A Mexico sim card is an essential purchase for your trip to Mexico. Not only will purchasing one help you to stay in touch with your family and friends back home, it will make planning your route and getting around Mexico much, much easier.

While having a local number can be useful in itself (you never know when you may need to call local friends, reserve a table at a restaurant, call your hotel etc), the main draw of purchasing a Mexican sim card is for its data.

Free wifi is not widely available in Mexico and while many hotels and resorts do have complimentary wifi available for guests, not all cafes, restaurants, and bars too. While traveling is a nice way to detach, if you don’t have a local sim card, it can be frustrating if you are dependent on finding a place with local wifi to be able to call an Uber, search bus/train/flight timetables, use Google Maps, check your emails, reserve a hotel, etc.

A Mexico sim card makes everything a lot easier. Fortunately, sim cards with call and data bundles are very affordable here and you can opt to buy either a physical sim or an E-sim depending on your needs and preferences.

This article has been written by a British Travel Writer living in Mexico (Me!) I have been living here for years so rest assured, you are in good hands here 😉 In this post, we will run through the different Mexico sim cards available, their costs, and any practical things you should know. It is updated periodically and all prices are current as of January 2024.

Buying a Mexico Sim Card in 2024

Buying a Mexico sim card is easy and affordable. You can buy a sim card at a convenience store, phone shop, or airport in a matter of minutes and you don’t have to trail into a designated phone store with all of your ID and a bunch of paperwork in tow either like you do as a tourist in some countries.

In terms of actual Mexican phone companies, you have three main options to choose from. Namely, these are Telcel, Movistar, and AT&T.

Previously, there were two additional providers: Nextel and Unefon. They have since been acquired by AT&T.

Telcel is the largest and arguably the best. Their packages are comprehensive and affordable and their coverage far exceeds that of their competitors.

Separately, you can also consider purchasing an esim card for Mexico. Airalo and Holafly are two great companies that offer decently-priced Mexico E-sims.

An E-sim is a convenient choice because this is a digital sim that you can purchase online and activate digitally by either scanning a QR code or following some brief instructions to change your phone settings. It is good because it means that you don’t have to take your usual sim out of your phone and then worry about losing it during your trip etc.

Another option is to buy a portable wifi hub device which can be a good shout if you are working remotely.

As I mentioned, I have been living in Merida, Mexico for the last two years. I personally use Telcel as my phone provider in Mexico but let’s take a look at all the different choices available.

Current Mexico Sim Card Bundles in 2024

The current bundle options available for Telcel, Movistar, and AT&T are detailed below. These details are correct as of January 2024. Do keep in mind that rates and offers may change. Occasionally, providers will also offer promotional deals and introductory rates.

Mexico sim card rates for Telcel Unlimited Friend package

Telcel Mexico sim card rates

A Telcel sim card is 80 pesos ($4). You will have to pay this fee at all Oxxo, 7/11, and other convenience stores. Some Telcel stores may charge you for this, others may not. Similarly, some may or may not charge you an additional activation fee – welcome to Mexico!

The currently available offers for Telcel mobile bundles are detailed below. These packages are called ¨paquetes amigo sin limite¨ aka ¨unlimited friend packages¨.

  • 100 pesos – 1.3GB and unlimited social media for 15 days
  • 150 pesos – 2GB and unlimited social media for 26 days
  • 200 pesos – 3GB and unlimited social media for 30 days
  • 300 pesos – 4GB and unlimited social media for 30 days
  • 500 pesos – 6GB and unlimited social media for 30 days

Data can be used in the USA, Canada, and Mexico. If you do not use all of your bundle by the end of the specified period, it cannot be carried over. The packages also come with unlimited messages and calls within the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

The packages also come with unlimited messages and calls within the USA, Canada, and Mexico. If you purchase a plan costing more than 150 pesos, you can also enjoy 500 MB of free music (whether that is via Spotify or Apple Music).

At the time of writing (January 2024), Telcel is also offering a promotion where you can enjoy double data when you sign up for one of their sim cards. This promotion appears to have been going on for quite a while and it doesn’t look like it’s going anywhere soon. (So you can get even more data with Telcel compared to other providers!)

Mexico sim cards: Movistar rates screenshot

Movistar rates

  • 50 pesos – 1GB of data, unlimited social media, calls, and texts for 14 days plus unlimited Whatsapp for 30 days
  • 100 pesos – 4GB data, unlimited social media, calls, Whatsapp, and texts for 30 days
  • 150 pesos – 5GB data, unlimited social media, calls, Whatsapp, and texts for 30 days

A Movistar sim card costs around 50-60MXN pesos in Mexico. However, some stores in Cancun, Tulum, and the Riviera Maya have waivered this for tourists so it depends on which store you go to. (Although 50 pesos is just $ 2.70 USD).  It is a bit confusing because the sign-up rates for Movistar are very different from what you get when you recharge. (To entice you to use them from the beginning, of course!)

Movistar recharge rates in Mexico

Recharge rates and offers for Movistar Mexico sim cards

The recharge prices and packages offered by Movistar Mexico are as per the below:

  • 50 pesos – 500mb data, unlimited social media, calls, and texts for 7 days
  • 80 pesos – 2GB data, unlimited social media, calls, and texts for 12 days
  • 100 pesos – 2GB data, unlimited social media, calls, and texts for 15 days
  • 150 pesos – 3.5GB data, unlimited social media, calls, and texts for 26 days

AT&T rates

  • 100 pesos – 1.5GB, 1.5GB video, 1GB Spotify, and unlimited social media for 14 days
  • 150 pesos – 2.3GB, 2.3GB video, 1.5GB Spotify, and unlimited social media for 25 days
  • 200 pesos – 3GB, 3GB video, 2GB Spotify, and unlimited social media for 30 days

The packages also come with unlimited messages and calls within the USA, Canada, and Mexico. An AT&T sim card doesn’t have an additional cost for the physical sim, so the price that you pay includes both the data/call plan and the sim.

When you do and don’t need to purchase a Mexico sim card

If you are traveling to Mexico from Canada or the USA, it is worth checking your phone plan before purchasing a Mexico sim card. Some networks, like T-Mobile, do include Mexico within their coverage at no extra cost. If you are traveling to Mexico from elsewhere in the world, or you have an American/Canadian sim card that does not include Mexico in its standard plan, you may be able to purchase add-on packages so that you can use data in Mexico. However, this may work out more expensive than picking up a sim card in Mexico.

For instance, Verizon offers excellent coverage but the price of using Verizon data in Mexico is far more expensive than the price of purchasing a local plan.

If Mexico is not included in your phone plan, you should absolutely not allow data roaming on your phone when traveling here as the cost can be exorbitant. This is particularly true if you have a phone plan from outside the Americas (e.g. a British/European sim). You can get decent Mexico sim card packages for less than $10 a month. These typically include a set amount of minutes and texts, a certain amount of data, and often, unlimited social media and WhatsApp usage. So, even if your own country does include Mexico within its coverage plan, you might want to consider buying a Mexico sim card just in case, especially if you will be spending a relative amount of time in Mexico. You never know when a local number may come in handy.

Purchase a Mexico E-Sim

A Mexico e-sim is a good alternative to buying a physical sim if you don’t want the inconvenience of taking your sim card out of its holder or you are worried about losing it. The plans work out a bit more expensive than a physical sim but they are still reasonable.

I live in Mexico so I have always used Telcel, but on a recent trip around Europe, I bought E-sims in every country I visited (Montenegro, Albania, Austria, and the UK). Their data plans helped me stay connected so that I could easily use Google Maps and get around.

Not taking the sim card out of my phone was a big plus for me because all of my online banking is tied to my Mexican phone number. If I want to transfer money or pay a bill, I have to get a confirmation code sent to my SMS for security and it was simply too much of a risk for me to change my sim and potentially not be able to receive the SMS/access my money O_O

Airalo and Holafly are two of the biggest and most trustworthy E-Sim brands. I personally use Holafly as although they are a bit pricier, they offer unlimited data.

The packages they offer are as per the below. Note that all prices are in USD.

Airalo eSIM Mexico packages

  • Chorro Fon 1GB data package for 7 days: $8
  • Chorro Fon 2GB data package for 15 days: $15
  • Chorro Fon 3GB data package for 30 days: $21
  • Chorro Fon 5GB data package for 50 days: $32.50

Holafly eSIM Mexico packages

  • 5 days of unlimited data for $19
  • 7 days of unlimited data for $27
  • 10 days of unlimited data for $34
  • 15 days of unlimited data for $47
  • 20 days of unlimited data for $54
  • 30 days of unlimited data for $64
  • 60 days of unlimited data for $84
  • 90 days of unlimited data for $99

Do note that you need to check whether your phone is compatible with an E-sim or not before purchasing. Most iPhones and Android phones released in the last couple of years are compatible but it pays to double-check.

Once your purchase is complete, you will receive an email with a QR code and some straightforward instructions to follow to get your e-sim up and running.

Where to Buy a Mexico Sim Card in 2024

travel sim card for mexico

There are several places where you can pick up a Mexico sim card. You will find little kiosks selling them at various international airports on arrival in the country, you can purchase them from Oxxo convenience stores (the Mexican version of 7/11) or you can purchase them in any phone store.

A beautiful Oxxo store in Campeche city

Buying a Mexico sim card at Oxxo

The easiest way to pick up a Mexico sim card is to venture into an Oxxo store or a 7/11. You will be able to pick up a Telcel sim card here. Simply go to the counter and tell the server that you want to buy a Telcel sim card. This is easy to do even with minimal Spanish.

You can say ¨yo quiero una tarjeta sim de telcel por favor¨. (I want a Telcel sim card please). Or failing that, you can easily type out what you are trying to say on the Google Translate app on your phone :). Telcel has several different bundles available. Just point to the one that you want.

You will be given a packet containing your sim card that is pre-activated with the number of minutes, data, and messages that you selected. Your new Mexican phone number will be displayed on the side of the packet.

Buying a Mexico sim card at the airport

You will find vendors selling Mexico sim cards at little kiosks at virtually every major international airport. However, these usually charge a premium rate and work out more expensive than buying the sim from a convenience store or phone shop. They depend on unsuspecting tourists not knowing how to get a sim card and the going rate of things when they arrive in the county. It is better to purchase your sim card only from an authorized dealer. Most airports have complimentary wifi. Get to your hotel/accommodation and then head to the nearest Oxxo to buy a sim card.

You will find Oxxo stores on virtually every street corner in Mexico.

Buying a Mexico sim card at a phone store

Telcel, Movistar, and AT&T stores are everywhere in Mexico. To find one, you can simply Google the name of the store and the name of the city that you are in. The rates and process for purchasing a sim are the same as when heading into a convenience store. However, queues are often longer in phone stores, with customers purchasing phones and waiting in line to ask all manner of complex/tech questions.

So, it still works out easier to simply buy your sim card from a convenience store.

Recharging your Mexico sim card

You will get SMS notifications from your Mexico sim card provider to notify you when you are approaching the end of your current term, when you are out of data/ minutes, etc. When you need to recharge, you can do so either online or at an Oxxo store/phone store.

There are also several online websites like Ding or Recharge that allow you or others to send credit/bundles to your Mexico sim card. They can do so simply by entering your Mexican mobile number and specifying an amount/bundle to be charged to their card.

If you head into an Oxxo or a 7/11 store, you can ask the vendor to recargar (recharge) your package. You need to have your phone number on hand as they will input it into the screen.

The top-up is automatic and you will receive an SMS notification to advise you that your phone has been recharged. You may have to restart your phone for this to take effect.

Purchase a Mexico sim card online before your trip

If you prefer to have everything organized and in order, before you head to Mexico, you can buy a Mexico sim card online before your trip. However, keep in mind that doing so comes at a premium price and can cost you more than twice as much as a sim card purchased locally.

Additional Things to Know About Buying a Mexico Sim Card

Some other useful things that you want to consider before buying a Mexican sim card are detailed below.

A Mexico Sim Card Helps You to Stay Connected

Mexico sim card

Your phone needs to be unlocked

Your cell phone needs to be unlocked before you can use a Mexico sim card. If your phone is locked, it means it is contractually bound to the carrier that you purchased a contract.

Checking if your iPhone/Android phone is unlocked

Today, a lot of phones are unlocked from the get-go but it is worth checking. Depending on your provider, you may be able to reach out to your network before you depart for Mexico via live IM chat, email, or phone call. Failing that, there are a couple of ways you can check. If you have an iPhone, head to the settings section of your phone.

Then go to  Cellular > Cellular Data. If you see Cellular Data Network, then your phone is probably unlocked.

If you have an Android phone, the process for checking if your phone is unlocked varies depending on the specific model. However, as standard, you may be able to go to the settings and then head to Connections > Mobile Networks > Network Operators and tap Search Now.

This way, you can see if the names of other carriers come up. If multiple carrier names show up, your phone might be unlocked.

Finally, you can check if your phone is unlocked by inserting a sim card, perhaps when you arrive in Mexico, and trying to make a call. If the call goes through, your phone is likely unlocked.

If you arrive in Mexico and realize that your phone is in fact locked, you can head to phone stores and stalls in malls and easily find an unlocking service. As in any country, you will be able to find someone who unlocks your phone for a few pesos.

Coverage is limited in Mexico

Telcel is the Mexico sim card provider that gives the best coverage. If you opt to buy a sim card with either Movistar or AT&T, you may find that you find more instances of finding that you have no phone signal, especially when you leave touristy areas and major cities.

However, whatever Mexico sim card you opt to purchase, you are guaranteed to be met with occasions where you have no 3G/4G and no network coverage while traveling in Mexico. When driving along rural roads in the Yucatan to ruins like Edzna and Mayapan , you may find that you keep completely losing the signal.

In some more remote beach towns like El Cuyo , you might find that the signal wavers in and out. 5G was launched in 18 Mexican cities in February 2022 and the intention is for Mexico to become home to the biggest 5G network in Latin America. As of yet, this is still a work in progress and most places are limited to just 4G. 5G coverage is only found around major cities.

You don’t need to change your number for Whatsapp

A lot of people worry about how changing out their phone sim card will affect the messaging apps that they use like Whatsapp and Viber. When you change a sim card in your phone, your number on Whatsapp, etc will not be automatically changed to the new number.

Instead, when you change your sim and log into your Whatsapp, you will see a prompt asking what number you want to use. If you want to continue using your existing number, you can simply click to confirm that.

That physical sim card doesn’t have to be inside your phone for you to use the number if it has already been registered to the device.

Social media coverage includes select apps

All Mexico sim card providers offer unlimited social media use for the duration of the bundle. This may be two weeks, a month, or a different amount of time depending on the prepaid package that you selected. Whatsapp, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, and Tiktok are included in this. YouTube is not.

You will notice that some bundles also offer an additional extra Spotify data bundle. The specific social media apps included and amount of free usage offers varies depending on the specific plan and sim card provider.

Download offline maps and other useful apps

One reason why you may want to purchase a Mexico sim card may be so that you can easily navigate around Mexico using Google Maps or similar GPS apps.

Buying a Mexico sim card can make your life a lot easier during your trip, especially if you are renting a car and driving in Mexico .

While this is useful and worthwhile, you should also consider downloading essential apps and maps to use offline. For instance, Maps Me works offline. That way, you are covered if you are navigating your way through a rural area and you lose your phone signal.

Assess whether you need a roaming device

If you are going to be spending an extended period of time in Mexico, working remotely, or operating multiple devices, you may want to consider purchasing an international roaming device like a Skyroam. These small, light devices are easy to carry in your luggage and in your bag.

You can easily shove them in your backpack/handbag for the day and they are not heavy to lug around. Skyroam offers 24 hours of unlimited data in over 130 countries across the world.

You can connect up to 5 devices on one Skyroam and the hub has a battery life of up to 16 hours.

Final thoughts on purchasing a Mexico sim card

Ultimately, whether you choose to purchase a physical sim or digital sim cards, having a Mexican sim card will help you stay connected during your trip. As well as helping you keep in touch with people and aiding you in your trip planning and managing your itinerary, it is good to always have a way to reach people in case of an emergency.

A Mexico sim card is important for your safety as much as anything else.

Mexico SIM Cards: The Best Options For Travelers

' src=

We often receive this question from our Spanish Immersion Retreat members: “Where can I buy a SIM card in Mexico?” As a Mexican/gringo couple living in Mexico for the past ten years, we have tried multiple service providers in Mexico as well as eSIM options. In this article, we will provide everything you need to know about how to get a SIM card in Mexico, including where to buy one and the best options available to ensure you stay connected during your travels.

This article has been updated to include the latest prepaid eSIM options from BAIT, providing more choices for visitors and residents.

Why do you need a Mexico SIM card for your trip?

A local SIM card in Mexico offers numerous benefits for tourists, including reliable connectivity, affordable rates, and ease of use. With a local SIM card, you can easily navigate your way around, make reservations at restaurants, post updates on social media, and keep in touch with your loved ones back home (the majority of plans discussed in this article offer both domestic and international outgoing calls to the U.S. and Canada).

Avoid international roaming charges

International roaming charges can be exorbitant, and using a prepaid Mexico SIM card can help you avoid these unnecessary costs. With a prepaid SIM card for Mexico, you’ll have access to affordable data and call packages that ensure you don’t need to worry about costly roaming fees during your trip.

Stay connected with unlimited data and calls, and stay safe

Many Mexico SIM card providers offer unlimited data and calls within the country, ensuring you’re always reachable and have access to vital information throughout your trip. Having a SIM card is also useful in emergencies, helping you stay safe while you explore the beautiful sights of Mexico.

To learn more about safety in Mexico, check out our article Is Mexico Safe? For a trip of up to 30 days, this perk can be invaluable for staying connected and protected as you travel. Don’t forget to consider travel insurance as well; we recommend SafetyWing for comprehensive coverage.

Locked Phones: What You Need to Know

travel sim card for mexico

Before purchasing a SIM card, ensure your phone is unlocked. A locked phone means it’s restricted to a specific provider and won’t work with another company’s SIM card. If you’re leasing your phone, it’s likely locked, but you can have it unlocked at a specialized shop or by paying off the device in full.

There are shops in Mexico that specialize in unlocking phones; however, this approach demands additional effort on your part and results may vary.

Bypassing Locked Devices with a Mobile Hotspot

travel sim card for mexico

One solution for locked phones is using a mobile hotspot. These devices allow you to insert a SIM card and create a Wi-Fi network for your other devices. Consider purchasing a SIM card-compatible hotspot, like the GlocalMe , to stay connected while in Mexico.

Where can you buy a Mexican SIM card?

Purchasing a sim card at the airport.

One convenient option to buy a Mexico SIM card is at the airport upon arrival. In cities like Mexico City and Cancun, you’ll find kiosks and stores selling SIM cards from providers such as Telcel, Movistar Mexico, and AT&T Mexico. While this option offers immediate connectivity, prices may be double or more vs purchasing outside the airport. That could mean a 50-100 peso difference (~$3-6 USD).

Buying a SIM card at a local store

travel sim card for mexico

Another option is to buy a Mexico SIM card at a local store such as Soriana, Chedraui or an OXXO convenience store, which are ubiquitous throughout the country. Here, you’ll find a range of prepaid SIM cards at competitive prices. Just ensure you have an unlocked phone first.

If you’ve already decided which provider you’d like to use, you can also search for an AT&T, Movistar, or Telcel store near you. These providers tend to have multiple branches in cities throughout Mexico.

Ordering a Mexico SIM card online

You can also buy your SIM card online before your trip, with providers often shipping the cards to your home country. This way, you can arrive prepared and have your phone set up and ready to go as soon as you land. However, this option usually entails extra shipping fees and may require longer waiting periods.

A more convenient alternative to purchasing a physical SIM card online is opting for an eSIM using Airalo . This way, you don’t need to wait for a physical SIM to arrive in the mail or plan much in advance. eSIMs can be set up in minutes and are ready to use as soon as you land in Mexico. By choosing an eSIM with Airalo , you can avoid extra shipping fees and eliminate the waiting period associated with ordering a physical SIM card. However, expect to pay a bit more for the convenience, as a 15-day 2 GB data plan with Airalo costs $15 USD, whereas a comparable plan with Telcel costs just over $11 USD.

Where to Buy an eSIM

Purchasing an eSIM online is an easy and convenient option for those looking to stay connected during their travels. Major Mexican providers such as Telcel , Movistar , AT&T , and now BAIT offer eSIM options on their websites. To buy an eSIM from these providers, visit their respective websites and follow the instructions to purchase and activate your eSIM plan.

Warning : While these carriers advertise eSIM options, it’s important to note that eSIMs are generally not available on prepaid plans. Always check the fine print or consult with customer service to ensure that the eSIM option is available for the type of plan you are interested in.

travel sim card for mexico

However, for frequent travelers, third-party apps like Airalo , DENT , and Nomad might be a more convenient choice. These apps streamline the process of purchasing eSIMs for multiple countries, making it a breeze for travelers on-the-go. Once you set up your account with one of these apps, getting an eSIM for your next destination is as simple as selecting your desired plan and completing the purchase.

To use Airalo , DENT , or Nomad , download the app from your device’s app store, create an account, and browse the available eSIM plans for Mexico or any other country you plan to visit. These apps offer a range of plans catering to different needs and durations, ensuring you find the perfect plan for your trip.

Once you’ve made your purchase, you’ll receive a QR code or activation details to install the eSIM on your smartphone, and you’ll be ready to stay connected throughout your travels.

What are the best SIM card options for Mexico?

When considering a SIM card for your trip to Mexico, you’ll likely come across several providers, including Telcel, Movistar, AT&T, and Bait. We’ll evaluate each of them here.

Important Note: TELCEL does not offer an eSIM option for prepaid plans.

Telcel: Best coverage and plans

travel sim card for mexico

Telcel is the largest provider in Mexico, offering the best coverage throughout the country. A Telcel SIM card ensures that you’ll have a reliable connection in most regions while enjoying various data and call packages. Telcel also offers tourist-specific plans tailored to short-term travel needs.

Telcel offers a range of Amigo Sin LĂmite plans, which include data, unlimited minutes and SMS, and access to popular social media platforms. Plans range from 1 day (50 MB data for $10 MXN) to 30 days (6 GB data for $500 MXN). Some plans also include roaming in the United States and Canada.

When we were with Telcel, we usually opted for the $200 MXN Amigo Sin LĂmite plan, which is good for 30 days and includes 3 GB of data and unlimited calls and texts within Mexico and to the U.S. and Canada.

We would be remiss not to mention that although Telcel is known for having the best coverage within Mexico, our experience and anecdotes from others suggest that prepaid plan data may deplete more quickly than one might anticipate. [Wags finger] Sneaky, sneaky, Telcel.

Movistar Mexico: More data and app benefits

travel sim card for mexico

Movistar Mexico is another popular choice for travelers, offering a range of prepaid SIM cards and data plans that provide more data and app benefits compared to Telcel. Their GigaMove plans range from 6 GB to 22 GB of data, with additional perks like unlimited minutes and SMS, access to social media, music, gaming, and mobility apps such as Waze, Google Maps, and Uber that don’t count against your data usage. Prices start at $235 MXN/month for the 6 GB plan and go up to $419 MXN/month for the 22 GB plan. Some plans also include international roaming with 8 GB of data.

While Movistar’s coverage may not be as extensive as Telcel, it still caters to most tourist hotspots, making it an attractive option for those seeking more data and app benefits during their stay in Mexico.

AT&T Mexico: Unlimited social and data packages

travel sim card for mexico

AT&T Mexico offers competitive plans with unlimited social media, unlimited calls and texts, and attractive data packages ranging from 500 MB to 3 GB, along with additional data for video streaming on platforms like YouTube and Netflix. While coverage might be less extensive compared to Telcel, AT&T Mexico is a viable option for travelers who prioritize staying connected on platforms such as Facebook and Instagram, and enjoy streaming videos on the go.

Bait: Prepaid Cell Phone Service with Great Coverage and Speed

travel sim card for mexico

Another option for travelers in Mexico is Bait, a prepaid cell phone service with excellent coverage and speed using 4G LTE technology. Bait is available exclusively through Walmart and Sam’s Club in Mexico, providing an alternative for those who prefer to shop at these establishments.

Bait offers recharge options ranging from 10, 20, 50, 100, 150, to 200 pesos, catering to various budgets and usage needs. They also provide significantly more data for each peso spent compared to the competition. For instance, with Telcel, 200 pesos will grant you 3.5 GBs of data, whereas with Bait, the same 200 pesos will provide 20 GBs. This equates to nearly six times the amount of data for the same price!

However, it’s essential to note that Bait only works on devices compatible with band 28. Before purchasing the service, check your device’s compatibility by visiting https://bit.ly/checkImei.

Verify that your device is compatible with Bait by following these steps:

  • Visit btz.mx/check or scan the QR code.
  • Enter your device’s IMEI number. You can obtain your IMEI by dialing *#06# on your device.
  • If your device is compatible, congratulations! You can now use Bait. However, if you receive a response indicating “Voz app,” you’ll need to download the free app from the Play Store to make calls.

How much does a Mexico SIM card cost?

The cost of prepaid SIM cards in Mexico varies depending on the provider, the plan chosen, and the amount of data and call minutes desired. Generally, you can expect to spend around $10-30 USD for a SIM card with data, call services, and a 30-day validity.

Understanding data and call package pricing

Data and call packages for prepaid SIM cards vary across providers, with Telcel and AT&T Mexico tending to be slightly more expensive than Movistar Mexico. For our needs, an unlimited plan like Telcel Amigo Sin LĂmite, costing $200-300 MXN per line, typically provides ample calls and data for an entire month. Carefully review the specific plan details and pricing structure to determine the best option for your travel needs.

Choosing the best plan for your trip duration

Consider the duration of your trip when choosing a Mexico SIM card, as packages usually include a validity period. Opt for a plan that meets your connectivity requirements and matches your trip’s length to avoid additional top-ups or hidden costs.

Topping Up Your SIM Card

travel sim card for mexico

To top up your SIM card with more data, talk, and text, regardless of the provider (Telcel, Movistar, AT&T, etc.), visit any OXXO convenience store and ask, “ÂżTienes recargas de…?” or “Quiero hacer una recarga de…” followed by your chosen provider’s name.

After this, the cashier will ask how much money you want to add to your card by asking “Âżde cuĂĄnto?” or simply “ÂżcuĂĄnto?” Choose from the available packages for a mix of data, talk, and text. If you only need data, ask for “solo internet.”

We usually just say “200 (doscientos) pesos” when purchasing a Telcel plan, referring to the “Amigo Sin LĂmite 200” plan.

The cashier will typically ask you to pay first, and then they’ll request your phone number twice to ensure that they’re crediting the correct account. By familiarizing yourself with these simple Spanish phrases, you’ll find it easy to add minutes and data to your phone plan in Mexico, regardless of the service provider you choose.

Topping up your eSIM is a simple and convenient process, ensuring that you always have sufficient data and calling credit during your travels. While the process may vary slightly between eSIM providers, here’s a general outline of how to top up your eSIM using an app like Airalo :

  • Check eSIM Rechargeability: Before you purchase an eSIM, ensure it’s rechargeable by checking the “Additional Information” tab. This is important because not all eSIMs can be topped up.
  • Log into Your Account: Access your eSIM provider’s app or website and sign in to the account you used to purchase your eSIM.
  • Navigate to ‘My eSIMs’: Locate the “My eSIMs” section or a similar tab to view all your active eSIMs.
  • Select ‘Top Up’: Tap on the “Top Up” option for the eSIM you wish to add more credit or data to, and choose the desired top-up package.

If there is no “Top Up” button or it doesn’t work, this may indicate that the eSIM is non-rechargeable or that the network carrier has changed. In such cases, you’ll need to purchase a new eSIM.

Note: If the top-up doesn’t activate automatically, try restarting your phone and toggling airplane mode on and off to re-establish the connection. If you encounter any issues, don’t hesitate to contact your eSIM provider’s support team for assistance.

Can I use my US SIM card or eSIM card in Mexico?

Roaming with a us sim card.

Using a US SIM card in Mexico is possible through international roaming, but the roaming fees can quickly add up if your carrier doesn’t include it in their plans. While an increasing number of US companies, such as T-Mobile, offer “unlimited” phone and data service for travelers visiting Mexico, catering specifically to those staying for less than a month at a time, not all providers have the same policy.

For example, Verizon doesn’t include international roaming for Mexico in their standard plans. Instead, they offer a “TravelPass” for $5 USD/day, or you can choose to pay as you go with voice calls at $0.99/min and data at $2.05/MB. Make sure to contact your provider before you travel to Mexico to find out if they offer any roaming packages at a reasonable price or if additional fees will apply.

Using an eSIM card while traveling in Mexico

If your phone supports eSIM cards, you can use an eSIM for your trip to Mexico. Many Mexican providers now offer eSIM cards, which can save you from carrying a physical SIM card. However, be aware of fees and activation processes associated with using eSIM cards in Mexico.

Alternatives to using a traditional SIM card

If you’d prefer not to use a traditional SIM card or eSIM card, alternative options include renting a portable Wi-Fi device or relying on public Wi-Fi spots in your travel destinations. While these methods may not provide the convenience of a local SIM card, they are worth considering depending on your travel preferences.

How to Install an eSIM

To install an eSIM on your Android or iOS device, follow these general steps:

  • Open the “Settings” app on your phone.
  • Select “Network & internet” or “Connections.”
  • Tap on “Mobile network” or “SIM card manager.”
  • Choose “Add” or “Add eSIM” and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Open the “Settings” app on your iPhone.
  • Tap on “Mobile Data” or “Cellular.”
  • Select “Add Data Plan” or “Add Cellular Plan.”
  • Scan the QR code provided by your eSIM provider or manually enter the details.

Please note that these are general guidelines, and the process may vary slightly depending on your device model and software version. For more in-depth and up-to-date instructions, we recommend visiting the Airalo website or consulting the support documentation from your eSIM provider.

Using eSIMs in Mexico

In this section, we’ll explore eSIMs as an alternative to physical SIM cards for travelers heading to Mexico. eSIMs are digital SIM cards that you can quickly activate with various carriers. They are built into modern iPhones and Android phones, making it easier for travelers to access cellular services without hunting for a physical SIM card upon arrival.

Pros of eSIMs:

travel sim card for mexico

  • Instant activation: With eSIMs, you don’t need to search for a cell phone store to buy a physical SIM card. You can activate your eSIM when connected to Wi-Fi and have cellular service immediately after leaving the airport.
  • Potentially cheaper and faster: eSIM providers may offer lower prices per gigabyte and better speeds compared to your home carrier’s international roaming plans.
  • No need to swap SIM cards: eSIMs eliminate the hassle of removing and keeping track of physical SIM cards while traveling.

Cons of eSIMs:

  • Limited device compatibility: eSIM technology is only available in newer smartphones made on or after 2018.
  • Coverage limitations: Some eSIM providers may not support all countries or regions, so you might need to research your destination beforehand.
  • Limited Availability: Not all local telecommunication companies fully support eSIM technology

Here are three eSIM providers to consider for your trip to Mexico: Airalo, Dent, and Nomad.

  • Airalo : This provider supports a wide range of countries, including Mexico, and offers competitive prices. However, prices can increase when purchasing regional or global plans instead of single-country plans.
  • Dent : Based on blockchain technology and its own cryptocurrency, Dent supports 71 countries and offers data plans that can last up to 365 days. You can buy and sell unused data in their marketplace, potentially getting lower prices per gigabyte.
  • Nomad : While not as affordable as Airalo or Dent, Nomad provides coverage in Mexico and can be a viable option for some travelers. It’s worth considering if you’re looking for specific regional support or plan features.

eSIMs offer a convenient and affordable alternative to physical SIM cards for travelers visiting Mexico. By exploring providers like Airalo, Dent, and Nomad, you can find a suitable eSIM plan to stay connected during your trip.

What We Recommend

travel sim card for mexico

Based on our experience, research, and analysis of various options available to travelers visiting Mexico, we recommend the following solutions based on individual needs and the length of stay:

Short-term travelers (1-2 weeks) – Airalo eSIM

For those planning a short trip to Mexico and primarily needing data for work, social media, or navigation, an eSIM with Airalo is the most convenient option. The app is user-friendly, rates are reasonable, and the convenience is unparalleled. However, keep in mind that only modern smartphones support eSIM technology, such as iPhones from the iPhone XS onwards.

If you’re already using an eSIM, don’t worry! iPhones can accommodate eight or more eSIMs and support the use of two phone numbers simultaneously. For those with Samsung, Google, Huawei, or other Android devices, the number of eSIMs you can install and activate at once may vary. Generally, most Android phones allow for five to seven eSIMs, with one being active at a time.

Longer-term travelers (more than 2 weeks) – Telcel

If you’re planning to stay in Mexico for an extended period and require the ability to make phone calls within the country or to the US or Canada, Telcel is the best choice. Their plans are easy to recharge, offering better rates than eSIMs. However, you’ll need to locate a Telcel or authorized vendor to purchase a SIM chip.

Important Note: Telcel does not offer an eSIM option for prepaid plans.

Keep in mind that Telcel SIMs require plan activity to remain active. As long as you maintain a valid prepaid plan, your SIM will stay active. However, if your plan expires, you’ll have a 180-day grace period to purchase a new prepaid plan. Failing to do so within this time frame will result in your SIM expiring.

No room for a physical SIM card? Bait currently offers a prepaid eSIM option starting at $100 MXN which includes 6GB of date and unlimited social media valid for 15 days.

Temporary or Permanent Residents – BAIT

For those with temporary or permanent residency in Mexico , Bait offers the most value, now including a prepaid eSIM option. With BAIT, you’ll receive more data than Telcel for the same price, and they offer discounts for purchasing 3, 6, or 12-month packages. This option is ideal for residents looking for a more long-term and cost-effective solution.

Useful Tips and Tricks

Keep your mexican phone number handy.

When you purchase a SIM card in Mexico, it will come with a Mexican phone number. Keep this number safe, as you’ll need it every time you recharge your SIM card. Remember that Mexico’s country code is +52. This means that if you use your Mexican number with friends outside of Mexico, you’ll need to make sure they enter “+52” before your ten digit phone number.

Tip For Techy iPhone Users

I like to use keyboard shortcuts on my phone to help me recall my Mexico number quickly on the fly.

If you use Apple products, you can program this on MacOS by going to System > Keyboard > Text and add your “ Replace ” text with the shortcut you want to use (I use “;mx”) and enter your new phone number in the “ With ” column.

Now, when you type your shortcut (Ex: “;mx”), on your phone, your Mexican phone number will automatically pop up.

A Simple Solution

For a more basic solution, send an email to yourself with the number or write it down in a ‘notes’ app on your phone so you can access it easily. Just be sure to tag the email or note with something descriptive and memorable, such as “my Mexican phone number.”

International Plans: Double-Check Coverage

If you already have an international plan with your home country provider, check the specifics of the coverage. Some plans may only include limited data, talk, and text, making a local SIM card a more convenient option.

Travel Tip: Bring a SIM Card Ejector Tool

When traveling to Mexico, bring a SIM card ejector tool , such as a safety pin, paper clip, or earring, to easily swap out your SIM cards.

In conclusion, the best option for staying connected while in Mexico depends on your travel duration, connectivity needs, and the type of device you have. With the new prepaid eSIM options from BAIT, alongside other providers like Telcel, Movistar, AT&T, and Airalo , travelers now have more choices to stay connected. By considering these factors and choosing the appropriate solution from the options above, you can ensure a seamless and stress-free communication experience during your stay.

5 Best SIM Cards for Mexico in 2024

Home | Travel | 5 Best SIM Cards for Mexico in 2024

If you’re looking for a SIM card for Mexico but you’re confused by all the options, I’m here to help. While I always try to disconnect when I’m away, it’s still a good idea to have Internet when traveling , especially if you run into any unforeseen events. Plus, it’s nice to be able to look up information or send photos to family and friends.

On my last trip to Mexico, I bought the Holafly eSIM card , which was cheap, easy to use, and had unlimited data. If your cellphone is compatible with digital SIM cards , this is the best option, and we even have a discount for Holafly .

Holafly logo

5% OFF your international eSIM card

However, if your phone isn’t compatible, I recommend one of the physical SimOptions cards . These SIM cards work very well, but keep in mind that they’ll arrive to your house by mail, so you must order them in advance. On the other hand, you can buy an eSIM while you’re already abroad.

In addition to these two options, there are other good Mexico SIM card alternatives that you might like. In this guide, I’ve compiled all the information about each one so you can choose the best option depending on the duration and reason for your trip. Keep reading to see the best SIM cards for Mexico , including the pros, cons, where to buy them, and other tips.

How do SIM cards in Mexico work?

A Mexico SIM card works the same way any SIM card in your home country would work. You can use it to connect to the Internet and, in some cases, send texts and make calls at no additional cost. However, keep in mind that some cards may not be compatible with your device, so I always suggest checking your phone’s compatibility before buying.

Mexico best SIM cards

In our case, we made sure the eSIM for Mexico was compatible with our phones by checking this site . It shows all the brands and models that work with the Holafly eSIM, so I recommend looking there to avoid any surprises. Of course, if you opt for a local Mexico SIM card , I recommend checking your phone’s compatibility at the place where you buy it.

Moreover, installing and activating the digital SIM is simple. All you need to do is scan the QR code, which you’ll receive via email after making your purchase. If you get the physical SIM card, insert it into your device and it should start working. Remember, if your phone doesn’t have a dual card slot, you’ll have to remove your current SIM card and replace it with the Mexico SIM card . Hang onto it so you can use it again after your trip!

Mexico SIM cards price comparison

To give you an idea of the different SIM cards in Mexico that are available, here is a chart comparing the durations, prices, and data limits. I’ve included the Holafly eSIM , the SimOptions physical card , and the most popular local Mexico SIM cards for you to compare.

After analyzing these options, you’ll see that the Holafly eSIM is the best prepaid SIM card for Mexico if you want unlimited data. So, if you use social media a lot, you’re working remotely, or you need to stay connected while traveling, this is the top choice.

From my own experience, I need at least 15GB of data per month, so the local SIM cards fall a bit short. While they have a cheap price upfront, the cost can quickly go up if you have to buy more data later on. For this reason, I prefer using Holafly or SimOptions.

Another advantage of Holafly and SimOptions is that you can access the Internet as soon as you get to your destination since you can get the SIM card ahead of time. With AT&T, Telcel, and Movistar, you must buy the SIM card in Mexico , so you’ll have to go shopping after you get settled at your destination.

What is the best SIM card for Mexico?

As I’ve already mentioned, the best SIM card for Mexico is the Holafly eSIM , which is what we used for our trip. It’s the most practical and convenient option, plus you get unlimited data, and you can even buy it when you’re already abroad since it arrives via email.

If you prefer a physical card, I recommend SimOptions , which offers a good data plan for two weeks of travel. Just keep in mind that you’ll receive the card via regular mail, so you must purchase it in advance before you leave.

That said, I’ll give you an overview of each Mexico SIM card below, including their pros and cons, so you can make the best choice for your trip.

1. Holafly eSIM , the best SIM card for Mexico

The Holafly eSIM is a digital SIM card for Mexico , so it’s the ideal option for travelers who are already abroad or don’t have a dual card slot in their phones.

Activating this card is simple since all you have to do is scan the QR code you’ll receive by email after purchasing. Once you activate it, you’ll have mobile data on your device. Just keep in mind that you’ll need to print out the QR code or send it to your travel companion so you can scan it with your phone.

Holafly eSIM card for Mexico

Also, remember to check if your device is compatible with this type of prepaid SIM for Mexico by going to this website .

This international eSIM card has unlimited data, so you don’t have to worry about limiting your Internet usage while traveling. It’s the best option if you want to save money while using mobile data abroad for work or pleasure, and you can even get an Holafly discount for being our reader.

This option guarantees you get great coverage during your trip, but if you don’t need unlimited data, this won’t be the cheapest option. However, if you run into any issues or concerns, you can access Holafly’s customer service 24/7, which is super convenient.

2. SimOptions card , a cheap SIM card for Mexico

If you prefer a physical SIM card for Mexico , I recommend ordering one from SimOptions in advance. This is the best option for a physical card since you can insert it into your device before leaving for your trip.

Once you order it, you’ll receive the card within 3-5 business days via USPS, or 1-2 days if you choose priority overnight service via FedEx. You can get more shipping details here .

To install the card, insert it into your mobile device. You should be able to start using your data, but if you have any issues or questions, you can contact customer support. The support team is available by chat, email, and phone.

SimOptions card, getting a sim card in mexico

This prepaid phone card for Mexico is great if your device has a dual SIM card slot. Otherwise, you’ll have to take out your current SIM card and keep it in a safe place while you use the Mexico SIM card . On the other hand, one of the best advantages of using SimOptions is that the card allows you to share data with your travel companions, so you can use it on more than one device. This is a feature that Holafly doesn’t offer.

The downside here is that SimOptions only offers two-week plans, so it’s best for short-term trips. If you’re taking a longer trip, Holafly and some local cards are cheaper, but SimOptions is the best physical card you’ll find on the market.

3. AT&T Mexico SIM card , another good SIM card for a Mexico trip

If you’d rather get a local SIM card for Mexico , the AT&T card is a good option. AT&T is one of the biggest communications companies in the country, so they generally provide good coverage. That said, you could run into connectivity issues if you go to some rural areas.

AT&T SIM Card, best mexico sim card

The AT&T Mexico SIM card offers cheap monthly plans, although the mobile data is more limited than Holafly and SimOptions. If you only plan on sending a few messages during your trip, AT&T should be fine, but you’ll need more data to access maps and search the web.

To get an AT&T card, you can go to any authorized AT&T store. Some supermarkets even have AT&T services, so you shouldn’t have any problems. If you need assistance with your SIM card, AT&T’s customer support is available several days a week by live chat and phone.

4. Telcel SIM card , another Mexico SIM card option

Another local option is the Telcel Mexico SIM card . This phone company is the largest operator in the country and has the best 4G and 5G coverage, so it’s a great alternative if you plan on exploring remote places or spots that don’t have Wi-Fi.

Telcel’s prepaid phone cards for Mexico range from two weeks to 30 days, and the prices are quite affordable. With Telcel, you can enjoy unlimited calls, texts, and social networks in the country, so it’s ideal if you want to upload travel photos to Facebook or Instagram.

Telcel SIM card, can i buy a sim card in mexico

Another advantage of this card is that if your plan expires and you still have mobile data left, you can start a new plan with that rollover data.

To buy this SIM card in Mexico , go to one of the official Telcel stores or an electronics store. You can also find Telcel in some supermarkets and convenience stores.

5. Movistar SIM card , a Mexico SIM card alternative

Movistar SIM card, mexico prepaid sim

This card also includes unlimited social networks, so it’s a low-cost option for those who want mobile data mostly for entertainment. You can buy it and reload it in authorized stores, supermarkets, and with authorized resellers, so it’s not hard to get.

Where to buy a SIM card for Mexico

You can buy a Mexico SIM card in the United States or once you get to Mexico. So, whether you want to prepare ahead and purchase it before the trip, or get a local SIM at your destination, it’s up to you.

Buy a Mexico SIM card in the U.S.

If you want to get a SIM card for Mexico while you’re still in the U.S., you must purchase it online. You can either opt for the  eSIM card, which arrives to your email instantly, or you can order a physical SIM card , which will arrive by mail to your house within 1-5 days, depending on the delivery method.

In my opinion, these two options are the best alternatives since you can take care of setting up your mobile data before you leave for your trip, and you’ll have Internet as soon as you land. Personally, I don’t want to waste my vacation time looking for phone cards at booths, kiosks, and stores. Plus, if I have any questions or problems with my SIM card, I can deal with those issues before I travel.

Buy a SIM card for Mexico at the destination

Of course, if you’re already traveling and you haven’t decided which Mexico SIM card to get , you can always buy the Holafly eSIM card and access it via email. Just remember that you have to print the QR code or send it to a travel buddy so you can scan it and start using the Internet.

In addition to the digital SIM, you can get a local SIM card in Mexico at an authorized store like AT&T, Telcel, or Movistar. Lots of supermarkets, convenience stores, and airport shops sell these phone cards, too.

Something to keep in mind is that your mobile device must be compatible with the SIM card, so make sure you check at the store before agreeing to buy it. With Holafly , you can check compatibility ahead of time online here , so it’s super convenient.

How to activate a SIM card for Mexico

Activating a SIM card or eSIM for Mexico is quick and easy. If you get the Holafly eSIM , all you have to do is scan the QR code to download the data plan, so it only takes a few seconds. To do this, you’ll need to print the QR code or have it on another device so you can scan it.

For the other cards, you have to insert the physical international SIM card into your device, and then it’ll be ready to use. If your phone has a dual slot, you can keep your current SIM card in and add the Mexico SIM card . This will allow you to receive calls to both numbers.

Remember to change the settings in your phone so you don’t get charged extra roaming fees. Go to your device’s mobile data menu and choose the SIM card for Mexico as the default. If you plan on using the Mexico phone line, change the settings for calls, too.

Requirements to use the SIM card in Mexico

Firstly, the Holafly eSIM card is compatible with most new mobile devices, but I recommend checking for your specific model here . Also, your phone must be unlocked and compatible with Mexico’s network frequency. But, this is also the case with the other local Mexico SIM cards , including the ones offered by SimOptions .

Apart from that, you don’t need to show any type of documentation or anything. Just pay and you’ll get the phone card.

Installation is super simple, especially with the digital card. Purchase the Mexico eSIM and scan the QR code that gets sent to your email. For physical phone cards, insert it into your mobile device and you can start using data.

Now you know how to get Internet in Mexico , as well as all the best options to choose from. If you have any questions about getting a SIM card in Mexico , or you want to share your experience, leave me a comment below. I’d be happy to hear from you! Have a great trip!

While roaming is an option, the costs can quickly accumulate when traveling internationally. Therefore, we always recommend either an eSIM or a local sim card to enjoy local phone rates. Luckily, obtaining either option in Mexico is incredibly straightforward, but it’s important to know which is the best choice for you.

This comprehensive guide aims to provide you with all the necessary information about buying a sim card in Mexico, including up-to-date pricing and the ultimate sim card recommendation.

Best sim card in mexico for tourists.

There are a few different mobile internet operators in Mexico but there is one clear winner for the best Mexico sim card: Telcel. Telcel is the largest mobile internet provider in Mexico and offers substantially wider coverage and better reliability than their competitors AT&T and Movistar.

The cost of Telcel Sim cards varies often and can even change from store to store. Your best option is to head to an OXXO store and purchase your Telcel Mexico sim card here. The cost should be around 250 – 300 MXN and it will come with 3 – 4 GB of data. This is enough for most people or for short trips, but there will also be higher data plans available as well, or you can easily top your card up later if you require more data.

If you want the most convenient option, then you can consider purchasing an Airalo eSim instead. It conveniently uses the Telkomsel network as well so you can be confident the coverage will be as good as it gets in Mexico. However, the sim cards are much cheaper at OXXO so I recommend purchasing it in a store if you are worried about saving a few dollars.

Mexico Sim Card Prices

A Tourist Sim Card in Mexico costs 250k MXN in September 2024, however, the exact price will often depend on the store you visit and the plan you choose.

Alternatively, an eSim in Mexico will cost between $8 USD and $32.50 USD. This, again, depends on how much data you require and which eSim provider you choose.

I generally recommend this Airalo plan for most tourists visiting Mexico which includes 3GB of data which is valid for 30 days and costs $21 USD.

Mexico Sim Card Providers

In Mexico, the main SIM card providers are Telcel, AT&T, and Movistar. These three providers dominate the Mexican SIM card market, providing reliable connectivity options to millions of users across the country.

How to Get a Sim Card in Mexico

Identify mobile providers: Telcel, AT&T and Movistar are your best options in Mexico.

Find your nearest store: Locate a store or retailer by searching on Google Maps for your nearest store or asking at your hotel reception. I’ve never had issues finding a store as they can usually be found in major cities, shopping centers, or tourist areas. If possible, I always recommend to to avoid airports and head in to an official store in the city.

Bring the necessary documents: It is always a good idea to carry your passport or identification documents for sim card registration purposes. We’ve found most providers will need to confirm your identity to provide a sim card and it can be a major hassle to head to a store only to have to come back again later with your passport.

Choose your plan: Either request the plan you are after or consult with the staff in the store to select the right plan for you. My recommendations at the beginning of this guide are a good starting point, but the staff will usually be able to suggest the best option.

Pay and activate your card: Pay for the SIM card and plan, and the staff will activate it for you.

Test: It’s always a good idea to check that you can access the internet before you leave the store. I always search for something on Google then refresh my Instagram feed to check it’s working fine.

Where to Get a Sim Card in Mexico

At the airport.

Buying a prepaid sim card for Mexico at the airport is usually considered the most convenient option for travellers arriving by plane.

However, airport stores selling sim cards are almost guaranteed to charge inflated prices, so if you are a cost-conscious traveller then you should definitely buy your sim card from a store in the city center.

In addition to this, we would argue that buying physical sim cards at all aren’t particularly convenient now that most people use esim compatible phones. If you are looking for the most convenient option, then buying an esim before you arrive or with the airport wifi is much easier and will save you having to queue up or communicate with staff.

If you must purchase a sim card at the airport in Mexico then you will be in luck. All major international airports in Mexico have stores selling sim cards. Despite the prices being higher than normal, the staff are knowledgable and will be able to get you set up with the correct sim card relatively quickly.

If you want to avoid the inflated sim card prices you’ll find at the airport and your phone isn’t esim compatible, then you’re going to need to head in to a store to buy your sim card.

I recommend visiting one of the official retail stores of the mobile internet operators such as Telcel, AT&T and Movistar. Your best option is to enter their names into Google Maps and find the branch closest to your hotel or accommodation. Typically the staff in the official stores in Mexico are knowledgable and helpful which means you can ensure you’ll walk away with a functioning sim card.

Despite this, it’s always a good idea to check your internet is working before you leave the store by loading a Google search results page and your preferred social media app. You should also ensure you always bring your passport with you when purchasing a sim card in case they need to register it.

If you like to be prepared and would prefer to arrive in Mexico with your sim card all sorted and your phone ready to connect to the internet immediately then you should look into purchasing a sim card online.

The first option is to buy your sim card in advance via SimOptions, which is a company that will prepare and ship a sim card directly to your door. It’s a reliable and effective service, but with the invention of eSims it’s becoming obsolete.

The better option is to purchase an eSim online. We’ve written more on that below!

Mexico eSim

An eSim is a digital version of a traditional sim card and is most likely the future of connectivity for mobile devices. The convenience of no longer visiting a store, handing over your passport and purchasing a physical sim card is quickly making physical sim cards obsolete in favour of eSims.

We recommend Airalo’s eSim when travelling to Mexico. The Airalo Mexico eSim offers fast internet speeds, wide coverage and extremely competitive prices making it a far more compelling option than purchasing a physical sim card from any of the local sim card providers.

In order to get set up with an Airalo eSim , all you need to do is visit Airalo here and purchase the eSim online (the $21 USD plan is suitable for most travellers). Once you’ve purchased the sim card Airalo will email you instructions and a QR code. Following these instructions should take just a couple of minutes, then you’ll have a sim card in Mexico without having to venture outside.

Airalo Mexico

Our preferred eSim provider in Mexico is Airalo . We used them, alongside a local sim card on another device, for our most recent trip to Mexico and found the service to be equal to the local sim card but without the hassle of acquiring a sim card in a store.

Airalo’s Mexico eSim uses the Movistar, AT&T & Telcel networks to provide data and connect users to the internet. You can expect very good coverage and reliability with the Movistar, AT&T & Telcel networksnetwork as they are amongst the best mobile internet operators in Mexico.

Here are the plans and prices for Airalo’s Mexico eSim:

1GB data valid for 7 days – Price: $8 USD 2GB data valid for 15 days – Price: $15 USD 3GB data valid for 30 days – Price: $21 USD 5GB data valid for 30 days – Price: $32.50 USD

For most travellers we recommend the 3GB data plan for $21 USD which is valid for 30 days. Some travellers may prefer a larger plan, whilst travellers visiting for just a couple of days may be fine with a smaller plan.

Holafly Mexico

An alternative eSim provider we can recommend is Holafly.

Holafly’s eSim is a suitable option for travellers who require large amounts of data, such as digital nomads and people who work online while they travel. All of Holafly’s Mexico eSims offer unlimited data.

Holafly’s Mexico eSim uses the AT&T Mexiconetwork to provide data and connect users to the internet. This network will provide reliable speeds and coverage while in Mexico

Here are the plans and prices for Holafly’s Mexico eSim:

Unlimited data valid for 5 days – Price: $19 USD Unlimited data valid for 7 days – Price: $27 USD Unlimited data valid for 10 days – Price: $34 USD Unlimited data valid for 15 days – Price: $47 USD Unlimited data valid for 20 days – Price: $54 USD Unlimited data valid for 30 days – Price: $64 USD Unlimited data valid for 60 days – Price: $84 USD Unlimited data valid for 90 days – Price: $99 USD

What is an eSim?

An eSIM, also known as an embedded SIM, is a digital SIM card that is permanently installed in a device like a smartphone, tablet, or smartwatch. Unlike regular SIM cards, eSIMs do not require physical insertion or removal.

Instead, the eSIM is integrated into the device’s hardware and can be remotely activated and programmed by a mobile network operator. This enables users to switch between different mobile networks or plans without the need to physically switch SIM cards.

The advent of eSIM technology offers convenience, flexibility, and user-friendliness, particularly for travelers or individuals who frequently switch between mobile networks or travel internationally. It eliminates the need for buying and inserting physical SIM cards, simplifying the management of multiple mobile connections on a single device.

To activate an eSIM, users typically scan a QR code provided by their network operator or manually input the activation details. Once activated, the device can connect to the desired mobile network and access voice calls, data services, and messaging, just like with a traditional SIM card.

Why Use an eSim?

There are several benefits to using an eSIM:

– Convenience: With an eSIM, there is no need to physically insert or remove a SIM card when switching between networks or plans. This is especially handy for frequent travelers who need to change networks or use local SIM cards in different countries.

– Dual SIM functionality: eSIM allows for dual SIM functionality on a device, meaning you can have two active mobile numbers on the same device. This is useful for separating personal and work numbers or managing multiple phone lines.

– Space-saving: eSIMs are embedded within the device, eliminating the need for a physical SIM card slot. This frees up space, allowing for smaller devices or additional components.

– Remote provisioning: eSIMs enable activation and management of mobile plans remotely. This means you can activate or switch to a new plan without a physical SIM card or store visit. It offers flexibility and convenience for managing mobile connectivity.

– Future-proofing: As eSIM technology becomes more popular, more networks and service providers offer support. By using an eSIM-compatible device, you ensure access to new services and offerings as they arise.

Overall, eSIM technology offers flexibility, convenience, and future-proofing for mobile connectivity, making it an attractive choice for many users.

eSim Supported Phones

eSIM technology is becoming increasingly popular and is supported by a growing number of smartphones and other devices. Here are some examples of eSIM-compatible phones:

Apple iPhone series (iPhone 11, iPhone 12, iPhone 13, etc.): Apple was one of the early adopters of eSIM technology and offers support for eSIM on various iPhone models.

Google Pixel series (Pixel 3, Pixel 4, Pixel 5, etc.): Google’s Pixel smartphones also support eSIM functionality, allowing users to activate and use eSIMs.

Samsung Galaxy series (Galaxy S22, Galaxy Note 20, etc.): Many of Samsung’s flagship devices now come with eSIM support, enabling users to utilize eSIM technology.

OnePlus devices (OnePlus 7, OnePlus 8, etc.): OnePlus has included eSIM support in some of its smartphone models, offering users the flexibility of using eSIMs.

Motorola Razr (2020): The latest iteration of the iconic Motorola Razr features eSIM compatibility, enabling users to use eSIMs for cellular connectivity.

These are just a few examples, and the list of eSIM-compatible phones continues to expand as more manufacturers embrace this technology. There’s a very strong chance your phone supports eSims so if you’re unsure we recommend looking it up on our list of eSim supported phones .

How to Use an eSim

Using an eSim is new for many travellers, however, the good news is it’s surprisingly easy to get set up – even for the technologically challenged!

Here’s a general guide on how to use an eSIM:

Check eSIM Compatibility: Ensure that your device supports eSIM functionality. Many newer smartphones, smartwatches, tablets, and other devices are eSIM compatible including all iPhones produced since 2018.

Obtain an eSIM: There are multiple ways to acquire an eSIM. You can purchase an eSIM online from a provider like Airalo (which we recommend) or directly from a mobile network operator. Some devices also allow you to scan a QR code provided by your carrier to download the eSIM profile.

Activate the eSIM: Your eSim provider will send you instructions to activate the sim. This will usually involve scanning a QR code, entering an activation code, or downloading the eSIM profile directly onto your device.

Set up the eSIM: Once activated, your device will guide you through the eSIM setup process. This typically involves selecting the eSIM as your preferred mobile plan, configuring settings like data roaming, and entering any necessary authentication details.

Enjoy the Connection: Once the eSIM is set up, you can use it as you would with a physical SIM card. Make calls, send messages, browse the internet, and use data services as needed. You can also switch between eSIM profiles if you have multiple eSIMs installed on your device.

Why Buy a Sim Card For Mexico?

We all know how useful smartphones can be especially when traveling. Whether it’s staying connected with family back home, or making plans with new friends on the road, phones are an essential part of any trip.

Your current network provider may or may not work in Mexico, depending where you are from and what mobile network you are with. It’s best to check with them directly before looking at alternatives.

Even if your normal sim does work you may still encounter issues like getting cut off, or having to pay for expensive overseas packages.

Getting a sim specific to Mexico is the best way to ensure no issues, and usually, save money in the process. Of course, this only works if your phone is unlocked to any network provider.

Buying a Sim Card For Mexico – Things To Consider

Best mexico sim card providers.

  • Buy Us a Coffee!

What Mexico sim card is best for you? Of course, we can’t answer that as everyone is different. While some people may only use Google Maps and Whatsapp, others will want to update their socials, stream media, and stay connected as if they were at home.

There are many variables to take into account when it comes to finding the right sim card for Mexico. In this article we will break down the options, and look at how to find the best sim for you.

How much does a sim card in Mexico cost ? Of course, price is one of the most important factors. Usually, you can save a lot of money by buying a local sim card, but some packages aren’t that great of a deal when you look at the small print. No one likes getting ripped off, so it’s best to do your research beforehand.

The cheapest deals might not necessarily be the best deals overall. Always make sure to check all of the details thoroughly so you know exactly what you are getting. Sometimes the deal may be cheap, but top-ups might be pretty expensive.

Make sure to carefully look at the initial package. Would you pay that much for data back home? If not, then it’s probably not a good deal. But data costs can vary hugely country by country.

A great hack is to go onto your online account with your current network provider. Here you can actually find out how much of your data allowance you’re using. You’ll probably want to factor in a bit extra though as you’ll be relying on your phone a lot more when you’re away.

Top ups are another important thing to check. Some tourist sims can’t be topped up at all as they are made to be thrown away after a trip. This becomes a nuisance if you use up all of your data or decide to stay longer in a place.

Where are you staying in Mexico ? The same as back home, different places have different levels of coverage. While digital nomad hotspots like Tulum are pretty well connected, some more rural parts of Mexico may not have good coverage.

Also some networks work better in some parts of a country than others. Make sure to research where you are traveling to on online forums to see who provides the best coverage. There are some great tips online, the best person to ask is always someone that’s already been there.

It’s not always easy to find out what network has the best coverage in a certain place. But it’s worth your time as picking up a sim that doesn’t work means it’s going to be next to useless.

Are there any coverage issues or blind spots? Are there mountainous areas? Will you be visiting any islands? All restaurants and hostels in Holbox Island for instance have terrible Wifi, so a good cell signal is all the more important.

It’s useful to know that Telcel is the biggest network provider in Mexico and has the best overall coverage.

Bureaucracy

You can get a sim card pretty quickly, easily, and without too much hassle in Mexico. Avoid companies who are insisting on too much paperwork. If they are asking for too much information or take too long to get you set up, it could be a way of stealing your information. Always buy from approved retailers and not just some guy on the street!

Always check the lifespan of any sim card you are buying. This is very important as the sim card will become useless after its expiry date.

If you have no fixed plans and are thinking about returning, consider getting an open ended sim. That way you can keep the sim card active and use it again and again, saving the hassle of getting a new one every time.

Where To Buy a Sim Card For Mexico

There are mobile internet shops everywhere in Mexico. They are especially easy to find in tourist areas like airports, shopping malls, and city centres. Here we take a look at the best places to buy a sim card for Mexico.

By far the easiest option for buying a sim card in Mexico is to get an eSim. Simply apply and register online before your trip. There’s no need to find an outlet, negotiate prices in ‘Spanglish’, or risk losing your own sim after you take it out of your phone and hide it in a very secure place (this may have happened to us)!

An eSim is just like a normal sim but without a physical product. You just download it onto your phone and it gives you access to your new data plan. The only downside is that not all phones are compatible. Make sure that your device is eSIM-compatible and that your carrier is unlocked before purchasing.

We recommend using a Holafly eSIM in Mexico as they offer great prices and top coverage.

A new country, a new contract, a new piece of plastic – booooring. Instead, buy an eSIM!

An eSIM works just like an app: you buy it, you download it, and BOOM! You’re connected the minute you land. It’s that easy.

In The Airport

Depending on where you are flying into you can easily get a Mexico sim card on arrival. Cancun Airport can be expensive though as the prices are heavily inflated. Mexico City has much better deals for tourists.

The advantages to getting a sim card as soon as you arrive is that the airport staff can usually understand English and will get you set up in no time. The disadvantages are that there is often less choice, and you could be paying a lot more than a local.

You may have to just get whatever is available in the airport at the time, which can be an issue with night time arrivals as many shops will be closed.

You can usually find an international phone shop in most cities in Mexico. Many will have sim cards especially for tourists. Just make sure that there is enough data to cover your stay as some will offer mainly calls and texts.

These stores usually have the widest range of options, plus they are unlikely to rip you off. But be prepared for all of the signage to be in Spanish. Shop workers may not speak English either.

Some big names in Mexico include AT&T, T-Mobile, Movistar, and Telcel. Sim cards can cost around MXN $0.99 and come in three formats: Standard, Micro, and Nano.

As an example you can pick up a Telcel sim card for around $25. It will come with 12 GB of data and free social media apps (excluding YouTube).

It’s easy for foreigners to buy a sim in Mexico as you don’t need your passport or ID. Your Mexican number and sim card doesn’t even need to be registered to your name. So anyone trying to take your details, is probably just signing you up to marketing emails.

Buying a Sim Card in North America

AT&T, Movistar, and Telcel sim cards will work throughout the USA, Canada , and Mexico. This means you can use data, send texts, and make calls in any of these countries at no additional cost. You will also get unlimited social media with these providers, like Facebook, Whatsapp, Instagram, and Twitter.

The most convenient option is of course to buy a sim online before you even leave for the airport. Spend some time shopping around for the best deal, and don’t waste any precious vacation time hunting down a sim card for Mexico.

There are a lot of options when it comes to buying a sim card for Mexico online. Plus you can buy international sim cards, which are even easier if you are visiting several countries.

Mexico SIM Cards: Everything You Need To Know

by Melissa Giroux | Last updated Apr 30, 2024 | Mexico , SIM Cards , Travel Tips

If you’re planning on visiting Mexico soon, you may want to buy a Mexico SIM card to facilitate your travels.

Now, you may be wondering how to buy a SIM card in Mexico, or if you can buy it before your trip. Don’t worry – we got you.

In this guide, we’ll explain where to buy a SIM card in Mexico, how to top up your SIM card, and how to buy one online.

🤳 Just want a Mexico SIM card fast? Buy one on Amazon .

Before you start, let’s see if you actually need a SIM card in Mexico. If you don’t mind being without Data, you could probably rely on hotels, cafĂŠs, and restaurants that provide Wifi.

Although, when my partner and I go around Mexico, we love to have access to a map, we want to be able to communicate with each other when we are not together, and frankly, it makes our lives easier!

You should note that if you’re American or Canadian, your mobile phone provider may be offering service in Mexico.

So, if that’s your case, you won’t be needing a SIM card for Mexico.

Best SIM Card In Mexico

The best prepaid SIM card in Mexico is Telcel. I personally used Telcel during my stay in Mexico and everything was fine.

Telcel is the largest mobile phone company in Mexico meaning you’ll get more coverage across the country.

That said, they offer options with unlimited social media. Yes, you read that right, some social media such as Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp won’t count towards your internet usage.

There are other SIM card providers in Mexico, but we strongly recommend Telcel.

How To Buy A SIM Card In Mexico

You can either buy a Telcel prepaid SIM card in person at the international airport, in an OXXO convenience store, or on Amazon.

We recommend buying your SIM card in an OXXO store if you wish to find the cheapest option possible.

Usually, you can expect higher costs at the airport, or via Amazon.

Below, you’ll find more information to learn how to buy a SIM card in an OXXO store.

Buying A SIM Card in An OXXO Store

The SIM cards are usually next to the cashier. You’ll see different data plans. You can point to the Telcel SIM prepaid card you’re interested in buying.

Then, they’ll give you the package and a receipt, but you’ll need to install your SIM card yourself.

You simply need to open up your phone with the little thingy to open the SIM card compartment, add your new Mexican SIM card in there, and voilĂ !

If you wish to learn more about the costs of buying a SIM card in an OXXO store, keep reading. We’ll get back to this later.

How To Buy A Mexico SIM Card Online

If you wish to have your SIM card ready for your arrival, you could also purchase it online on websites like Amazon.

Here’s an overview of the costs:

  • SIM-only (that you can recharge online): around $18
  • Prepaid SIM card with 2GB: around $28
  • Prepaid SIM card with 4GB: around $40

Browse Telcel Prepaid SIM cards on Amazon

Now, this can be wonderful if it works, but sadly many people reported that their SIM card didn’t work as planned on arrival. Is it a mistake on their behalf, or couldn’t they understand the SMS in Spanish?

It’s hard to tell. Some people also reported that it worked just fine. So, it’s up to you to decide if the risk is worth taking.

If you don’t want to risk it, I’d recommend buying it in person in Mexico.

Alternatively, you could purchase a SIM card on SimOptions .

They have one data plan in Mexico.

But there’s another solution worth considering if you wish to have data immediately on arrival.

How To Buy An eSIM Card For Mexico

Finally, if your mobile phone supports eSIM cards, this could be a brilliant alternative!

If you’re unsure what eSIM is and want to learn more about it – you can read my guide explaining eSIM for travelers .

How Much Does A SIM Card Cost In Mexico

The initial cost is higher because you need to buy the SIM card too. If you’re staying long-term, you’ll be able to top up instead of buying a new SIM card every time.

We had originally bought our Telcel SIM cards in an OXXO store for around EUR 12 (or $14, or MXN 280). If my memory is good, we only had a few GB of data (probably between 2-4).

Obviously, if you need more data, the cost will be higher.

Keep reading to learn more about the costs of topping up below.

How To Top Up A Mexico SIM Card

When it’s time to top up your Mexico SIM card, you’ll have two options. You can either go back to the OXXO store to top up, or you can do it online. Click here to get started .

Note that the website is only available in Spanish, so I’ll share screenshots of the different steps with you.

The steps below are for the Internet only, but you can browse other options if you wish to make calls.

Step 1: Browse the internet packages available. I usually go for Internet Amigo 300, which gave me 5 GB and unlimited data for social media networks – valid for 30 days.

You’ll find several options between MXN 50 and 500 depending on the timeframe and data needed.

Step 2: Choose a package and click on the purple button “Lo Quiero”.

Step 3: Then, you’ll see two options appear. Click on “Compra Ahora” to buy it right away.

Step 4: Enter your Telcel phone number twice (you can find it on the SIM card package). Then, click on “Continuar”.

Step 5: On the next screen, you’ll need to enter the following information:

  • Card number
  • Date of expiration
  • Email address

Then, press on “Continuar”.

* Now, as my Revolut travel card is linked to my European address, I wasn’t able to enter a Mexican ZIP code. So, I simply typed the one suggested there “00000” – and it worked.

If this option doesn’t work for you, or if you’d rather go through the process in English, you can always head to Recharge.com . It’s slightly more expensive, but it’s fairly easy to use. I personally topped up via Telcel’s website a few times and it always worked fine for me.

Mexico SIM Card: My 2024 Guide

  • by Jake Perry
  • January 16, 2024

Worried about getting around Mexico without internet on your phone? Here’s a detailed guide on how to get a Mexico SIM card .

If you’re planning a trip to Mexico , you’re in for a treat – this country has so much to offer, from colorful markets to ancient Mayan ruins , and everything in between. But let’s face it: staying connected while you’re on the go can be a challenge. Whether you need to make a call or use mobile data, relying on your home country’s SIM card can lead to steep international roaming fees.

That’s why it’s a smart move to get a Mexico SIM card when you arrive here. Not only will you save money on phone expenses, but you’ll also have the convenience of a local phone number and access to affordable rates for calls, texts, and data. Trust me, it can make a big difference when you’re trying to navigate a new city or stay in touch with your loved ones back home.

In this article, I’ll share some tips and tricks on how to get a SIM card in Mexico, including where to buy one, what to look for, and how to activate it. Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or a first-time visitor, getting a local SIM card is a must-do when you’re exploring this beautiful country.

Is it Worth Getting a Mexico SIM Card?

Why you need a mexico sim card.

Before we get into the details, let us take a second and consider if you really need a SIM card in Mexico.

Having a Mexico SIM card will allow you to have internet data on the move, that means access to Google Maps (to find your way around), Whatsapp, and apps to access your hotel bookings. You’ll be able to communicate with locals, call an Uber or taxi, and stay connected with friends and family back home.

Mexico isn’t a developed country, so don’t expect to find WiFi everywhere you go. Some parts of Mexico like Holbox island and Puerto Escondido don’t have stable WiFi, so if you need to work remotely then yes you definitely need a Mexico SIM card. If you plan to do a Oaxaca road trip or drive all over Guanajuato, having a Mexico SIM card will make it easier to navigate, contact hotels and find restaurants to eat at.

mexico sim card - using google maps

Many US and Canadian service providers allow you to use their roaming service in Mexico so it’s worth checking with your telco company before you leave. This means you’ll be able to connect to the internet using the SIM card you already have, so in this case you might not need to buy a Mexican SIM card.

Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile all offer free roaming services in Mexico. It does depend on the plan you have though, so make sure to check on their website. If you’re struggling to find it online, give their customer service team a call. There’s no point spending the money on a SIM card in Mexico if you can use the one you already have.

using internet data on the move - buying a sim card in mexico

Some phones will be locked to the network provider and they won’t let you use other networks SIMs. Before you leave you’ll want to check if your phone will allow you to use other network SIMs.

To unlock your phone, simply contact your network provider who will be able to unlock the phone for you. This is usually free of charge but it is dependent on what network you are using.

Types of SIM Cards in Mexico

Here are some options for what type of SIM cards are available these days. I’ll go into details further on how to get each type of Mexico SIM cards.

With a Mexico eSIM (digital SIM card), you can toss out your physical cards and simply activate it on your phone through an app! An eSIM is a digital SIM that allows you to activate a cellular plan from your carrier without having to use a physical SIM. You can install eight or more eSIMs on an iPhone and use two phone numbers at the same time.

I personally use eSIMs wherever I travel these days as they are SO much more convenient – you can do everything online, and don’t need to go to the shop or activate it through the store. eSIMs are also really affordable too, with prices that vary according to the duration.

Most phones are compatible with eSIMs, including all of the new iPhones, Samsung, Google and Huawei phones. For a comprehensive list of phones compatible with eSIMs you can check out this article .

airalo esim - best sim card mexico

A pre-paid Mexico SIM card allows you to call, text, and use the internet on your phone. You’ll get a local Mexican number and easily call and receive phone calls without requiring an internet connection. As well as this, when you get a Mexican SIM, most network providers give you free coverage in the US and Canada too.

Pay as you go SIMs (or prepaid plans) is a short-term option and you basically pay for your credits upfront and top it up as you go. If you’re just traveling around Mexico or you’re a digital nomad staying for an unknown period of time, I recommend getting the prepaid Mexico SIM card.

telcel prepaid sim card

Postpaid plans are Mexico SIM cards with a monthly billing cycle. You can only get a postpaid plan if you have a temporary resident visa in Mexico . The process is super easy as a resident and it can be done within an hour!

This is what I have in Mexico and it works very well. I just went to a Telcel store with my passport and residency card, and right then and there, I got a postpaid sim card for which I get automatically billed every month.

I have bought many eSIMs on Airalo and they have all worked perfectly. Airalo is the world’s first eSIM store and it has eSIMs from over 190 countries and regions around the worlds.

In my opinion, eSIM cards will completely phase out physical SIMs over the next few years, especially with Apple announcing the iPhone 14 will only have eSIM functionality.

Check out Airalo’s Mexican eSIMs here.

Pricing: 190 MXN (US$9.50) – 540 MXN (US$27) depending on local or regional plans. Local plans only allow you to use the eSIM in Mexico, while regional allows you to use it also in US and Canada.

Best Mexican Networks

Telcel has the best network coverage in Mexico. The only downside is that their pricing isn’t the most competitive, but you are paying for quality and reliability. I’ve used Telcel for almost two years now and have never had any problems with service or reception, even in some of the more rural areas.

It’s easy to buy a Telcel SIM card online or at any OXXO shop in Mexico . A prepaid SIM card itself costs between 29 and 149 pesos (around US$1.5-7.5). 3GB of data valid for 30 days on the sin limite plan (unlimited) costs 200 pesos (US$10.) That will also give you unlimited calls, texts, and most social media within North America.

Pricing: 20 MXN (US$1) – 1200 MXN (US$64)

  • Telcel Mexico Prepaid SIM Card with 2GB Data – US$30
  • Telcel Mexico Prepaid SIM Card with 3GB Data – US$39.99
  • Telcel Mexico Prepaid SIM Card with 8GB Data – US$69.14

Check Telcel’s prepaid plans!

AT&T is the second-largest network in Mexico and offers good coverage in most areas, although it’s not as good as Telcel. There is a lot less variability in terms of packages available compared to Telcel and Movistar, but it does offer the cheapest plans.

Pricing: 50 MXN (US$2) – 200 MXN (US$10)

  • You can get an AT&T SIM card here for US$7.49
  • Buy 1-week unlimited data for US$25.89

Check our AT&T’s prepaid plans!

AT&T store - best sim card mexico

Movistar is the third-largest network in Mexico and offers good coverage in most areas but is more limited than the two former networks.

Movistar is a lesser-used network throughout Mexico and I haven’t met many people who use them. From what I’ve been told, their service is good but not as reliable or widely available as Telcel or AT&T. There aren’t as many Movistar stores around as Telcel and AT&T.

One thing that is great about Movistar though is the number of prepaid plans they offer. They have a better choice of plans compared with Telcel and AT&T.

Pricing 20 MXN (US$1) – 500 MXN (US$20)

Check out Movistar’s prepaid plans!

If you’re the type who likes to be ready before a trip, you can always buy a prepaid SIM card online (links above) or an eSIM as mentioned.

Otherwise, it’s easy to buy one when you arrive. You can get a SIM card at the airpor t in Mexico. Generally these are a little more expensive than the stores outside of the airport. But if convenience is what you’re after, then they are a great option to get you set.

You can also get SIM cards at OXXO convenience store s — there is literally one in every street corner. You can also buy them at Walmarts, large grocery stores and some convenience stores.

A Mexico sim card usually costs US$5 including an activation fee. They will also ask you to top it up before purchasing. US$10 unlimited data is usually enough as an initial top-up.

oxxo shop - where to buy sim card mexico

how to Install & Activat e a SIM Card

This is totally dependent on the type of phone you have. I have an iPhone so you need a special SIM opening key (earrings work too!) to pop the SIM holder out and place my SIM in there. Each phone is mostly unique though so if you are struggling just type the name and model of your phone into google and there will be a SIM installation tutorial video you’ll be able to find. Here’s a quick example of a SIM installation for an iPhone and Android.

If you buy it in the official store in Mexico then ask politely for the staff to help you change your SIM card and activate it. Most of them are happy to do so for you without extra charge. If you get your card online you can log onto the official carrier’s website and follow the instructions there.

How to Recharge Your SIM

You can buy more credits online or at most OXXO shops. Alternatively, go to the website of your telco company. There they will ask for your activation code which is on the back of your SIM card. Then you can log into your account and purchase whatever plan you wish. Once the plan runs out, you can go back into your account and purchase another plan.

As you can see above, getting a SIM card in Mexico is pretty straightforward. For me, getting an eSIM is the easiest and most convenient option. It saves you the trouble of wasting time at the airport or running around looking for an OXXO to buy a physical SIM card.

But if your phone isn’t compatible with eSIMs, then I suggest buying a Telcel prepaid SIM card on Amazon before your trip. Again it’ll save your time and give you internet data the minute you land! Telcel has the best coverage in Mexico and its rates aren’t too bad either.

I hope this guide has been helpful and gives you a better understanding of how to get a Mexico SIM card. If you have any questions, please feel free to leave a comment below and I will be more than happy to help you out.

How many days does a TelCel phone number last for until you have to put more money on it? That is, when is that number no longer yours? Can you get eSIMS that provide a Mexican number and data? Which company? Thanks!

' src=

hi Jim, I’m afraid I don’t know the answer to your questions. I have a TelCel Mexican number and data that needs to be topped up every month. I’ve used it for 2 years now but I use it every month, so can’t tell you when it’ll stop functioning if you don’t top it up.

All the eSIMs I’ve bought from Airalo don’t have numbers attached to them, but I just took a look at TelCel’s website and I think they can provide eSIMs with numbers.

' src=

How to check mexico sim card number?

hi, it depends on which telco you’re using. If you’re using Telcel like me, you can send a message to 7878. The easiest way is probably just using your phone to call another Mexican number, that way they’ll see your number. If you have an eSIM, most of the case you won’t have a number as it’s just a data plan.

' src=

Hi, I’m a bit confused by the rates for TelCel you’ve posted- There’s a linked list of plans starting at $30, but you’ve also written– A prepaid SIM card itself costs between 29 and 149 pesos (around US$1.5-7.5). 3GB of data valid for 30 days on the sin limite plan (unlimited) costs 200 pesos (US$10.)

So If I were to go to OXXO I would only pay a max of $17.50 USD for a card and 30 days of data? This is the plan I’d like.

Thinking of buying one in Canada before I go, but they cost $42 CDN (~$35 USD) for 2gb. Wondering if this will truly save me money if I get one once I arrive in Mexico instead. Thank you very much!

hi Narlua, sorry to confuse you! TelCel has so many kinds of plans that honestly are confusing. Yes you are right, if you were to go to OXXO or Telcel, you would pay only a max of US$17.50 for the SIM card with 3GB of data. The linked list of plans is for people who sign a contract with Telcel and have an ongoing plan with automatic recharge each month. You’ll need an address here for that and two references (we don’t even use that living here).

And yes it will save you money getting one when you arrive here. The only thing is that OXXO folks are not gonna help you install the SIM. I would suggest getting an eSIM, that’s what I get everytime I travel. It’s super convenient, I don’t have to swap out physical SIM cards anymore and just activate it when I land. AND it’s cheaper than getting the physical SIM card. You’ll find the links above to buy them.

It seems like the e-sim is still more expensive? Cheapest one from that link for 30 days is $21 USD. I think I’ll opt for the physical card from OXXO. We also need two, so this seems like the most economical option. Unless I’m missing something? Thank you, really appreciate your prompt reply!

Mexico SIM Cards: 5 Reasons You Need to Buy One in 2024

' src=

wondering if you need a Mexico SIM Card?

As someone who’s been living in Mexico since 2018, my opinion is YES , you absolutly do need a Mexico SIM Card. While you can get away with jumping on free public WiFi in some countries, Mexico simply isn’t there (yet).

I have been all over Mexico, to more than half the states and nearly all the big travel destinations, and free public WiFi has never worked for me anywhere — not even in big cities like Mexico City and Cancun.

Because of this, you’ll need a prepaid Mexico SIM card with enough data to cover your whole trip if you want to stay connected at all times.

Telcel Mexico Prepaid SIM Card with 3GB Data and Unlimited Calls and SMS

  • 3GB Cellular Data (at full 4G/LTE speeds) valid for 30 days starting at your arrival in Mexico
  • Unlimited Calls and SMS (only text) in Mexico, USA or Canada
  • Can also be used in USA and Canada for Data, Calls and SMS
  • Unlimited Social Networks (Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, Instagram, Snapchat)
  • LTE capable (LTE Coverage is available in most cities and touristic areas)

In short, Mexico is a wonderful country, but its technology infrastructure isn’t as sophisticated as some countries. For this reason, a SIM card with data is the only way to ensure you’re connected at all times.

Ready to discover all your options for buying a Mexico SIM Card online?

Let’s dive in to discover more about the best Mexico SIM card company to use — which in my opinion is this Telcel Prepaid Mexico SIM card .

Best MEXICO sim cards

What is a sim card.

Before we continue, let’s take one second to clear up what this SIM card thing actually is! SIM stands for Subscriber Identity Module .

one hand holding a small white sim card mexico

A SIM is basically a tiny chip on a plastic card that goes into your phone, and essentially “connects” your phone to your phone number. Now that we’ve addressed the biggest of all SIM card FAQs, let’s continue!

Telcel: The Best SIM Card for Mexico

Want the best SIM card Mexico has? Of course you do!

For this reason, I always recommend my readers buy this Telcel Mexico SIM card and opt for Telcel Mexico data plans.

Wondering, What is Telcel? This is Mexico’s largest cell phone service provider, so a Telcel SIM Card in Mexico will give you the most coverage throughout the country.

🤔 What other Mexico SIM Card Companies are there?

You can also get an AT&T Mexico SIM card or use the company Movistar.

Word of warning: Movistar is about as liked by customers as Spirit Airlines! They are the least expensive, and also known to have the most dropped calls and weakest signal — so you get what you pay for.

📲 SIM Card Sizes

Depending on your cell phone, you’ll need one of these three sizes: Chip, Microchip, or Nanochip.

Luckily, the Telcel options featured for purchase in this article work for all sizes — as you can see above.

If you’re buying another Mexican SIM card, you’ll want to google your phone’s specs to find out what size SIM card you need to get.

How much does a SIM card cost in Mexico?

SIM cards in Mexico vary in price, but shouldn’t be more than $10 USD. Now, this is just for the card without data, which you can also buy here from Amazon .

Telcel Mexico Prepaid SIM Card with 8GB Data and Unlimited Calls SMS Universal SIM

With this empty card, you will have to then fill it with data so that the card has use — as without data added to it, your Mexico data SIM card has no function.

How much data you want to buy, where you buy the data (airports often charge more, for example) and how much each Mexico phone company charges — will all vary.

As a general ballpark figure, since I only recommend using Telcel, you can expect to pay about $15 USD for 4gb.

This $15, plus the $5-10 cost of the card itself, means it’s only about $15 less than buying one online right now.

Doing this means you already have the card in hand, and won’t waste any of your precious Mexico travel time getting a SIM card and setting it up.

Why You Should Buy Your Telcel Mexico SIM Card Online Now

Now that you know what a SIM card is, and which brand to buy for the best coverage while in Mexico — let’s talk sizes so you know which SIM card to buy.

⚠️ Note: Before buying a SIM card for Mexico, you’ll want to see if 1) you already have free Mexico service, and 2) if your phone’s unlocked.

As you can see with the Mexico SIM card prepaid options above, they come in “GB” (gigabyte) sizes.

This is the amount of data you can use before the card stops working. If you run out, you can always refill it with more data while you’re in Mexico ▶︎ Find out how here .

💁‍♀️ Mexico Travel Tip: Order your Mexico SIM card now

You can have it in your wallet, and swap it out when your plane lands. This way, you’ll have cell service and data the second you’re in Mexico — so you can call an Uber and let everyone back home know you made it safely.

The great thing about any of the Telcel Mexico prepaid SIM card options above all come with free unlimited calls and texts within Mexico.

They also (usually) include and unlimited social media on Instagram, WhatsApp, Facebook and Twitter — and being on these social networks won’t count towards your data usage.

The things you’ll want to think about are how much you’ll be using the Google Maps app, as this can suck up a lot of data.

Also, you’ll have to keep video watching to a minimum, and make sure to download any Spotify playlists or podcasts you love, as streaming can suck up data fast.

What size Mexico SIM Card should I buy?

The majority of travelers will have more than enough data with this 4gb Telcel SIM of this 8gb Telcel SIM .

These will cover you even on a 10-day Mexico trip, and even if you’re doing a lot of high-data usages activities.

The average smartphone owner uses  2GB to 5GB of data each month . 📲 Source: nerdwallet

As you see in the statistic above, most use this amount in a month. However, while traveling, you tend to do more data-intense things like using Google Maps to get around all day.

With this 8gb Telcel SIM , you’d never have to worry about going over, and can just focus on enjoying your trip to Mexico.

If you know you’re going to use a lot of data, love watching YouTube videos, or just like having more than you think you’ll use, the 8gb SIM card is the one for you.

You can also size down to this 4gb SIM card , 3gb SIM card , or even a 2gb SIM card ; both perfect for a short trip to Mexico.

While this isn’t exactly an unlimited data plan, this 12gb SIM card will last you months in Mexico, so it’s just as good as unlimited for most travelers.

The 12gb Mexico SIM card has one of the biggest data packages available anywhere. It would last you several months in Mexico — which is perfect for long-term travelers and digital nomads in Mexico.

🇲🇽 Mexico Pro Tip: If you’re traveling solo like I do, you might even want to err on the side of caution and have a bit too much data , should you ever find yourself in an emergency situation.

💸 Pay As You Go SIM Cards in Mexico

The final option is to just buy this actual Telcel SIM card Mexico , which comes with no data at all.

With this, you can pay as you go, stopping in to shops throughout Mexico to add data as you need it.

Though this may save some money, it also wastes your precious travel time — so it’s always easier to opt for a prepaid SIM card for Mexico, which usually only ends up being a few dollars more.

To refill ( recarga in Spanish), top-up or add money/credits to your SIM card, it’s a simple process.

Be on the lookout for a Telcel store or kiosk, or OXXO convenience stores; which are all over Mexico and will be easiest to find. Head inside, and ask the clerk for help purchasing what you need.

How to Set Up a Telcel SIM Card in Mexico

travel sim card for mexico

With a prepaid Telcel SIM, there’s no set up required. Simply turn off your phone, swap out your current SIM card for the new one, turn your phone back on, and you’re good to go.

If you’re getting one in Mexico, buy one at the airport when you land and the clerk you buy it from will assist with this.

Once you swap SIMs, you’ll have a Mexico number that starts with +55 or +52, as the SIM is basically what connects the phone to the phone number.

Remember to let friends and family know about your temporary +55 or +52 Mexico number, which will be located on the SIM card packaging. After your trip, when you return your original United States SIM card, your phone will automatically revert back to your U.S. number.

How to Change a SIM Card

Never changed a SIM card before and wondering how to change your SIM card? No worries; it’s super easy and the video above will show you how.

One thing to keep in mind is that SIM cards are tiny. Whatever you do — Do not lose your U.S. SIM card — so make sure to store it somewhere very secure.

5 Reasons to Buy a Mexico SIM Card Before Your Trip

1. you can do it right here, right now.

Telcel Mexico Prepaid SIM Card with 2GB Data and Unlimited Calls and SMS

As with all things, procrastinating is never a good idea. If all you need to do is click above and buy a SIM Card right now in this very moment — Why wait?!

2. It’s Safer to Have One

The reality for most people is that their cell phone is almost a physical extension of themselves.

We’re so used to having it that we forget that it can actually be a lifesaving tool, and that it’s the thing we’d reach for in an emergency. Is travel really the time to not have phone access?

3. They Aren’t Very Expensive

Wondering, How much is a SIM card for Mexico? If you’re only visiting Mexico for a few days, this 2gb data SIM card costs less than $25 USD.

For all the convenience you get from having data and Mexico cell service, and how much stress this will alleviate from the whole travel process — it’s a relatively small price to pay.

4. Access to Travel Apps You Need for Mexico

While traveling, you need more access to apps than in daily life.

In Mexico, you’ll likely need Google Translate to communicate. Being in a new city means constant use of a Maps app so you don’t get lost.

You’ll also likely be using Uber a lot more, not to mention your Airbnb app, banking app, TripAdvisor, etc.

5. Your Loved Ones Will Thank You

The people back home will not only want to see your photos and videos, but they’ll also want to know you’re safe and enjoying yourself.

Now that we’ve reached the end of this list of the top five reasons to get a SIM Card for Mexico, let’s talk about your options for where to buy one in the country, should you choose not to do so online.

✈️ Buying a Mexico SIM Card at the Airport

You can absolutely wait to buy a SIM card in Mexico when you arrive at the airport, or when you leave the airport (more on non-airport options below).

Keep in mind that buying Mexico SIM cards at the airport is about 25% more than if you get one outside the airport, which is why some people wait.

If you’re going to wait to get one until you leave the airport, have plans for how you’ll get to your accommodation.

While airports say they have free WiFi, I’ve never been able to properly connect to Mexico airport WiFi — and if you don’t have a SIM with data, you won’t be able to call an Uber.

As it’s often not too much cheaper to buy the SIM card at the airport versus buying one online in advance , here are a few things to consider about your airport purchase:

  • Your flight might be delayed and you end up arriving at the airport when all the shops are closed, and now you can’t buy a SIM card.
  • They might be sold out of the SIM card you need for your phone.
  • You might arrive to the airport, and even though you told them you were traveling, your credit card company is blocking international charges, and now you can’t buy a SIM card 😡

Whatever the circumstances are, there’s a good chance something won’t work out when buying a SIM card in Mexico at the airport.

If this does happen, you’ll regret not buying your SIM card in advance — which you can do right here with the click of a button!

📲 OXXO Sim Card Mexico

front of OXXO Mexico convenience store

In most parts of Mexico, it seems there’s an OXXO on every street, or at least every 3-5 blocks. All OXXOs sell Mexico SIM cards, and in several brands, including Telcel.

To buy one, head into any OXXO and ask for one of the SIM cards (chips) behind the counter. You’ll need to know what brand you want, and the amount of data you want to buy.

After purchasing, you’ll then put in the new SIM card and go through the activation process. ⚠️ Note: In Mexico, SIM cards are called “chips.”

📲 Walmart Sim Card Mexico

Walmarts are also all over Mexico, though much less prevalent than OXXO.

The cost for the SIM card itself will be comparable, though OXXO tends to be a few dollars cheaper.

However, if you happen to find yourself near a Walmart, you may want to try getting the card there over an OXXO.

The benefit to getting your SIM at Walmart is that there’s more employees, so that’s likely someone around who speaks English and can take more time to assist you.

In my experience, it’s rare to get an English-speaking cashier in OXXO.

Will my phone work in Mexico?

If you’re wondering, Will my cell phone work in Mexico? — you’re in luck, because it just might , but that depends on your carrier.

the tool used to change a sim card mexico, next to a phone and the SIM

Some U.S. companies do offer complimentary North America service within Mexico, the U.S. and Canada, as these are the top two international travel destinations for Americans.

You will have to call your company to find out they offer you this. If they don’t, they will likely offer you the option to turn your international roaming on but don’t do this.

International roaming is much much much more expensive than buying any prepaid SIM Mexico option, so resist this urge.

🤔 What is international roaming on my cell phone?

Your company can, with a click of a button, make it so your phone works in Mexico. However, they often charge astronomical rates — like 50 cents per minute for calls!

While convenient, it’s also the most expensive way to have cell service in another country.

For this reason, I recommend buying this Telcel SIM card on Amazon now , so you have it the second you get to Mexico. I consider it the best international SIM card for Mexico travelers.

Is your cell phone unlocked?

In order for a SIM card swap to work, your phone must be unlocked.

Nowadays, most phones come unlocked, but this isn’t always the case. To see if yours is, call your cell company and ask. If it’s not, they can unlock it for you for free in just seconds.

⚠️ Note: When calling, let your company know you need the phone unlocked for travel, and that you’ll be using an international SIM card once it’s unlocked.

🤔 Is there 5G Mexico Phone Service?

There is 5G in some places, particularly big cities like Mexico City, Cabo San Lucas and Guadalajara. However, the cell service Mexico has is in many places is still 3G.

Now, this might sound primitive, but I’ve been living as a digital nomad in Mexico City , and other parts of the country like Playa del Carmen and Merida , since 2018 — and haven’t encountered any phone or internet issues.

Final Thoughts: How to Buy a Prepaid Mexico SIM Card

We’ve reached the end of the article, and I hope you were able to discover the best Mexico SIM cards, where you can get yours online, and the Top 5 reasons why buying a Mexico SIM Card is a smart, safe idea.

While there are several ways to buy a Mexico SIM card, there’s also no time like the present!

For this reason, I recommend you buy your Mexico SIM right now with the click or a button (or tap of a screen), versus when you arrive in Mexico.

For convenience, you’ll want to pick one up before your trip, though it is a bit cheaper to get one in Mexico (though that process can eat into your precious travel time).

Whether you choose to buy your Mexico SIM card prepaid option online now, or wait until you arrive in Mexico, you’ll want to get a Telcel brand SIM card .

As Mexico’s largest cell service provider, you’ll get the best reception in the most places. They have lots of SIM cards Mexico options, and they work even if you’re venturing off the beaten path in Mexico .

Every traveler’s nightmare is to be left isolated without mobile internet or WiFi. That’s why you need a Mexico SIM card with data to look for restaurants, order cabs, or send photos back home.

But where can you find a solution to these situations without paying hefty roaming fees ? In this article, we will be talking about how and where to buy your prepaid SIM card for Mexico. We will also be introducing you to a new solution known as the virtual SIM card that will allow you to use your cell phone in Mexico, some even with unlimited data, during the days of your stay in the country. Keep reading to find out more about what eSIM is and these alternatives.

Where can I buy a SIM card for Mexico?

There are three ways to buy a Mexico SIM card, and within these two ways, there are multiple options you can take.

prepaid sim card

You can purchase your data SIM card for Mexico remotely before your trip starts through virtual providers offering this service. It’s important for travelers to check out how long the delivery takes and what mobile they need to use this type of SIM card in Mexico.

Our second option is to use a virtual SIM card. For this, you need an eSIM-compatible device, but if you already have one, we invite you to learn more about Holafly’s eSIM Mexico which we will give you more details about later in this article.

The third way you can take it is a more traditional one, which consists of buying your SIM card for Mexico once you arrive in the country. Some local mobile operators offer these products to their customers and tourists in the country. The purchase can be made through their physical stores. But, as long as you have the necessary documentation, you can get one of their products.

Buy before you travel

As we mentioned, nowadays, there are many online telecommunication providers for almost any destination in the world, including Mexico. They offer their services through websites where you can choose your plan and service, find the one that fits your needs, order it, and pay for it all with a few clicks. Of course, you must then wait for the delivery of the physical SIM card , which can vary depending on your location.

Finally, we also want to mention that there is a solution for the latter, but we’ll talk about both. If you have a compatible phone, you could consider buying a Virtual SIM Card for Mexico before your trip . This card has the same benefits as a Physical SIM Card, and also, being completely virtual, its delivery is immediate through an email after your purchase.

International SIM Cards for Mexico

One option for travelers is to get a SIM card to use while traveling to Mexico. This option is quite famous, and there are different ways for people to get one before traveling . The thing with this method is how long it takes for the SIM card to arrive.

Nowadays, there are different options available for people to use, such as TravelSIM or SIMOptions, which offer different types of Mexico SIM cards for travelers .

In terms of prices, the final price will depend on what people need. In this case, prices can go from $13 to $87, and the amount of data varies from 500MB to 10GB. Also, there’s an extra fee included for people who want to make phone calls with these SIM cards.

Overall, it’s fair to say that, including the delivery service, one SIM card from these companies can cost more than $50 for just a week of usage. None of the international Mexico SIM cards include unlimited data.

Holafly: Unlimited data virtual SIM card for Mexico

For travelers, the Holafly eSIM for Mexico is a great option to stay connected . It is a better alternative due to how easy it is to get one, and people can get as many as they need, which makes it better than local carriers.

eSIMs for Mexico , such as the one offered by Holafly, are becoming increasingly popular. But Holafly has a better service in terms of what it offers. And different features make it stand out from the rest.

First, users will get unlimited data with the Holafly eSIM , and prices are accessible, with data plans starting at $6 to $139. As for the days, these data packages vary from 1 to 90 days. The only thing you need to use an eSIM is to have a compatible virtual SIM card phone !

But there are more features included for those using the Holafly eSIM for Mexico, such as the following:

  • Top-up service to add more days to your eSIM if you plan on staying longer.
  • Holafly app for Android and iOS devices to purchase and manage your eSIMs.
  • Users will get 3G/4G/LTE speeds using the Holafly eSIM.
  • Unlimited data plans.
  • Data sharing up to 500 MB per day.
  • Great coverage in most popular Mexican destinations.
  • 24/7 customer service & super-flexible refund policy !
  • Immediate delivery after the purchase is completed.

Also note that Holafly offers eSIM deals for North America with which you can have coverage in Mexico, Canada, and the USA without paying additional services.

Buy your SIM Card from a local operator in Mexico

The second way and the other alternative you can have is to buy your SIM card once you arrive in Mexico through local operators. Currently, three operators offer these services to tourists: Telcel, Movistar, and AT&T Mexico.

There is the curiosity that the costs may vary depending on which store you buy the Prepaid SIM card, even if they are authorized agents of any of the phone companies; we will be talking more about each one below.

In Mexico, you’ll be able to choose a SIM card from various brands, each offering different rates and deals. This way, you can choose the deal which meets your needs best. We recommend buying from Telcel or AT&T , which offer the best coverage in the country.

Telcel Mexico

travel sim card for mexico

Telcel is the largest company in the country and the first to bring 4G/5G speeds to its borders, and it has the most stores around Mexico. You will see a Telcel symbol everywhere, and there will be different stores where you can get a SIM card from this carrier.

With Telcel, the Amigos sin Limite remains a great option for travelers to get access to mobile data with one of the best carriers in the county. But people can also buy one using platforms such as Amazon, where they sell prepaid SIM Telcel cards that include mobile data, text messages, and phone calls.

Something worth mentioning about Telcel Mexico is that their SIM cards also work in Canada and the USA, which might be helpful for travelers. As for prices, this is the updated Amigos sin Limites price list:

  • 2GB of mobile data plus text messages and phone calls for $9.
  • 4GB of mobile data plus text messages and phone calls for $18.

AT&T Mexico

travel sim card for mexico

The second option available for travelers to use with local carriers comes with AT&T Mexico. Similar to Telcel, people can get a prepaid SIM card and then get a data package . The available plans vary from 5 to 30 days, varying from $2.5 to $18 according to the chosen plan.

Similar to Telcel, and thanks to the coverage offered by AT&T , SIM cards with data packages purchased in Mexico also include features to use in the USA and Canada, such as text messages, phone calls, and even mobile data for certain apps like WhatsApp or Facebook.

Also, people won’t have to worry about not finding a store to get an AT&T SIM Card, as there are stores throughout the country .

Movistar Mexico

travel sim card for mexico

The last carrier on our list comes with Movistar. As of now, Movistar Mexico is the least favorite option for travelers , especially because their coverage and service have a lower quality compared to the rest.

On the other hand, they do try to include more benefits to the SIM cards they offer for travelers to have a better experience by including free use of apps such as:

  • WhatsApp (30 days of free use).
  • And many others.

Currently, Movistar Mexico offers three different first-time data packages to customers. These will vary from 1GB for 14 days and 4GB for 30 days. If people stay longer than this, they can get data packages that vary from $2.5 to $9 to get more mobile data and access to free apps as well.

As we mentioned before, in this country, the costs can vary depending on where you buy your Prepaid SIM card, regardless of the operator and whether it is through their stores or authorized agents. A Prepaid SIM card purchased in Mexico can go from $3 for less than 5 days of use to $30 for 30 days of use plans . However, on many occasions, you must add to this price $4 for administrative costs and another $4 for SIM card configuration. At some physical stores, this happens, and in some not.

In the case of buying them through online stores, this phenomenon is not repeated because the remote providers maintain the prices indicated on their websites without adding fees other than shipping costs to your address. In this case, the costs can go from $20 to $50.

Where can you get a SIM card in Mexico?

When traveling to Mexico, there are different places where to get a SIM card . As there are lots of visitors year after year, stores such as Oxxo and 7-Eleven are great options to get one, but there are also other alternatives, such as Walmart.

People can also try to get a SIM card from official stores from any of the mobile carriers we previously mentioned. On the other hand, there are also some stores on the airport which people can rely on .

For travelers who decide to use this method, these are the pros of it:

  • No need to sign a contract to get a SIM card.
  • Easy recharge process through different stores.
  • Access to local LTE/4G networks.
  • Access to free apps for a limited time.
  • Easy to swap SIM cards if necessary.

As for the cons of this service, we could mention the following:

  • As the SIM card is not under your name, it’s hard to get proper support from any carrier.
  • If your Android or iOS device doesn’t work with local networks, you won’t be able to use the SIM card.
  • The amount of mobile data is limited for what travelers could need while abroad.
  • Some stores will charge an extra fee for the setup process or for the SIM card itself.

Is it worth getting a SIM card in Mexico?

In the case of buying them through online stores, this phenomenon is not repeated because the remote providers maintain the prices indicated on their websites without adding fees other than shipping costs to your address. In this case, the costs can go from $13 to $80 or more.

Truth be told, SIM cards offer different additional features to travelers, such as free access to some apps, but these won’t grant high-speed connections. Also, the amount of mobile data is not so high, which might be a letdown.

Therefore, it’s fair to say that this decision must be taken by each traveler according to their budget and what they need.

Which SIM card is best in Mexico?

After analyzing the different options people have, as long as you have an eSIM-compatible device , the best option is to take the Holafly virtual SIM card with you.The different features they offer, such as unlimited data and a mobile app to manage and purchase eSIMs, make it a great option for travelers. And, they have a competitive price which makes it better for all types of budgets.

Maya Mobile

If you want to buy a prepaid Mexico eSIM  before you leave, then Maya Mobile is the best option.

They have the cheapest eSIMs and a flexible eSIM with unlimited data for Mexico and Latin America. They have expanded the eSIM offerings a lot lately, so now you can choose exactly how long you want it for and how much data you need (1-10GB or Unlimited).

Below are some examples to give you a feel for the pricing:

  • 1GB, 5 days, $6
  • 3GB, 10 days, $14
  • 5GB, 15 days, $22
  • 10GB, 30 days, $36
  • Unlimited, 30 days, $129 (Mexico)
  • Unlimited, 30 days, $129 (Latin America)

The Latam option includes 16 countries in Central & South America, so if you move around, it is perfect. And it’s the same price as the Mexico-only option. Crazy, I know.

Unlimited Data Selection

Just be aware that Maya Mobile has some subtleties in their Unlimited data packages. I dived a little deeper on their page and saw you can select

  • The timespan – 5, 10, 15, 30 days
  • Data sharing allowed or not
  • When data speed throttling occurs

So, although they allow sharing for some extra money, they also throttle the speed after 3 or 5 GB a day. Holafly does not do this.

Networks Used In Mexico

They work with Telcel and AT&T, giving you the best coverage in Mexico. So, whether you are in Mexico City or on a small beach in Baja, you will have coverage.

They also give the auto-renew option, so you don’t always have to watch your data usage. Just switch it on, and your data is topped up automatically.

  • Lowest prices per GB

  • Latin America eSim option

The 5GB/30-day plan is the most affordable at $6 per GB which is pretty good. There are more affordable 7-day plans available from other providers like Maya and Airalo.

  • Simple to buy and activate
  • Fast connection and good coverage
  • A range of plans to suit you
  • Unlimited data is not available

Benefits of Getting an eSIM

The benefits of getting a Mexico eSim include:

  • convenience
  • flexibility
  • keep your number

With a Mexico eSIM card, you can be connected to a local network within minutes of landing, and don’t have to go to a store to get a local SIM card.

With a Mexico eSim, you can keep your sim card from home, including your normal phone number. So, you will receive any calls or texts as normal.

An eSim is usually the cheapest way to get data while traveling in  Mexico. You can choose the perfect eSIM to match your trip time data needs. And you won’t be punished with roaming fees when you get home.

Buying a virtual SIM or eSim is also more eco-friendly. SIM cards use metals from mines and come covered in plastic, eSims are digital, so you will feel good about it!

Devices Compatible with a Mexico eSim

Not all devices are equipped with eSim technology. An eSim is an embedded SIM card built into your phone or tablet.

Since the technology is relatively new, only newer phones or tablets will be equipped with eSims. Generally, any high-end smartphone made in the last 3 years should have an eSim, other devices older than this probably won’t.

For example, the iPhone XS is the oldest iPhone model with an eSim inside it. So, how do you check if your device is compatible with an eSim? It’s very easy.

Dial *#06# on your phone. This will bring up all the unique information about your phone, including its IMEI number and maybe an EID (Embedded Identity Document) number. If you see an EID number, your phone is compatible with an .

The final step to using an eSIM on your device is ensuring it is unlocked from your provider. If you bought your phone or tablet through a contract, it might be locked to your mobile provider.

To check and unlock your phone, call your provider and ask them to unlock it. It should only take a few minutes to do.

Local Mobile Operators Offering eSIMs in Mexico

For the best network coverage in any country you visit, choosing an eSim that partners with a local network provider is always the way to go.

This will ensure you always have a data connection, and fast connection speeds, and may be able to add call minutes and SMS to your eSim data plan.

Currently, there are only three local mobile operators offering eSims in Mexico and these include Telcel, Movistar, and AT&T. Look for eSim providers that use these networks for the best experience while you are there.

Data Needed When Traveling to Mexico

How much data do you need while traveling around Mexico? This all depends on your budget and how you want to browse while you are there.

If you want to use your cell phone as you would at home, then you should find a data plan to match your usage.

Most people use about 5GB per week on average, but this can be as high as 20GB a week for those uploading to Instagram all the time or watching movies on their phones via a data connection.

You should be able to see your data consumption over time as a report on your smartphone or get a report from your provider. Once you know how many GB per week you use on average, you can find a data plan to match.

If you are traveling on a tight budget, you do have the option to choose less GBs per week but you’ll have to be smart about reducing your data consumption. Also, be careful not to run out of data and have to top up as this will almost double your local eSim costs.

Tips for Using eSIM in Mexico

Do not activate your esim until you land.

When you buy eSim data plans, they come with a limited time frame such as 7 days or 30 days. The data plan start date is the day you activate it. Therefore, if you activate it before you are in Mexico, you are losing days on your plan.

Make sure you only activate your eSim once you have landed in Mexico to make the most of the data plans.

Turn Data Off For Some Apps

If you are trying to conserve your data usage, go into settings on your phone and turn data off for the apps you don’t need. Apps that download photos and videos use the most data and Instagram is the biggest culprit.

By turning data off, these apps can never use your data allowance but they will still work on WiFi.

Download Google Map Areas

Did you know you can download specific areas on Google Maps and then use them offline without any data?

Google Maps is so helpful when traveling, I am on it more than anything else! I find everything from good restaurants to secluded beaches using it. By downloading the areas you are visiting on WiFi, you can use Google Maps as usual without using any of your data allowances.

Turn On Airplane Mode

Airplane mode stops your phone from connecting to a network so no apps can secretly use data in the background. This is a great way to conserve data and you can still use GPS with maps plus take pictures too.

Use Whatsapp

Whatsapp is the most used messaging app in Mexico. The free app allows you to send messages and make calls using data only, so it is perfect for an eSim data plan. Plus, you can communicate with hotels, taxis, tour guides, and more through the app.

Since 2012 I am already traveling the world full time and throughout the years I turned my passion for traveling into a lifestyle and became a full time nomadic travel blogger . That is why I constantly get to a different country and pretty much every week I need to look for a new sim card to stay connected.

In 2022 I visited 62 countries and in 2023 I traveled to 34 countries so imagine how many different prepaid and eSIM cards I used throughout the last 2 years.

In the past I used to buy a local prepaid sim card on arrival in every country, but nowadays I mostly use eSIM cards to stay connected when traveling abroad. On my latest trip to Mexico I tested the below recommended Mexico eSIM cards for tourists.

Helping other travelers to save money while traveling the world is one of the reasons I started this travel blog. My recommendation

Traveltomtom comes to the conclusion that although Nomad is the best value eSIM card for traveling to Mexico, the most recommended eSIM is Airalo. This has all to do with the mobile data network the Airalo eSIM card for Mexico is using. More info below.

1. Jetpac eSIM for Mexico - $16 USD

  • 5 GB data-only eSIM
  • Operates on the Telcel network
  • Valid in Mexico only
  • Valid for 30 days
  • $3.2 USD per Gigabyte

Jetpac is the best value eSIM for Mexico in 2024 and it operates on the Telcel network, by far the best mobile data network in Mexico.

Traveltomtom readers now get an extra 10% off on all Jetpac eSIMs when using the promo code: TOMTOM10 at check out!

2. Airalo eSIM for Mexico - $23.5 USD

  • $4.7 USD per Gigabyte

Traveltomtom also recommends an Airalo eSIM for traveling to Mexico.

For my research about the best Mexico prepaid sim cards for tourists  Traveltomtom compared all the 4G/5G data networks of the mobile internet operators in Mexico and I found out that the AT&T as well as the Movistar 4G/5G network coverage is very weak compared to Telcel.

Don't make the mistake to end up with an eSIM that operates on the AT&T or the Movistar network. You will regret later!

For traveling in Mexico Traveltomtom always recommends a prepaid or eSIM card from Telcel over any other mobile internet provider.

If you are not planning to go off the beaten path and are going to stick to the common tourist destinations in Mexico then an eSIM card from Nomad will also do the job.

Is Mexico one of your stops on a trip to Central or North America then you can also look into getting an eSIM card for world travelers . There are a bunch of eSIM cards that cover multiple countries.

There are 2 very important things to check before ordering an eSIM card for Mexico or in general before using an eSIM card.

Unlocked phones only

Make sure your phone is unlocked. eSIM cards for tourists only work in unlocked phones. If you are not sure if your phone is unlocked then contact your mobile internet provider in your home country.

In general phones from Europe, Asia and the Middle East tend to be unlocked. Phones from North America are often locked.

If your smartphone is locked that means it does not allow another prepaid sim card or eSIM card to operate in the device. You can easily unlock your phone, but depending on your mobile internet provider you will be charged a fee for unlocking your phone.

eSIM compatible phones only

Second, and equally important: eSIM cards only work if your smartphone supports eSIM cards, also called eSIM compatible. All newer smartphones support eSIM cards. If you are not sure if your phone is eSIM compatible then simply go to Google and type in your mobile phone model in the search bar and ask if it is eSIM compatible. You will get the answer instantly.

If your phone is NOT eSIM compatible then there is no other solution and you can NOT use an eSIM card for traveling to Mexico.

However, you can still order a sim card for Mexico on the internet before your trip. Find out everything you need to know about international sim cards for traveling abroad in 2024 .

Mexico eSIM comparison

Buying an eSIM card on arrival in Mexico is unfortunately still not possible at the international airports of for example Cancun, Mexico City or Puerto Vallarta. As of September 2024 there are some phone stores that now offer eSIMs for tourists.

Some Telcel stores have eSIMs for tourists available, but definitely not all of them. They still mostly sell physical prepaid sim cards for tourists. For more info check out Traveltomtom's guide about buying a local prepaid sim card in Mexico .

But don't worry there are multiple eSIM providers on the internet that sell Mexico eSIMs for tourists. Traveltomtom recommends ordering an eSIM card for traveling in Mexico from one of the well-known eSIM card providers like: Jetpac, Nomad, Airalo, SimOptions, Holafly, etc. which have proven to be reliable operators.

Traveltomtom's favorite eSIM providers are  SimOptions  and  Airalo , simply because I have used them in more than 100 countries around the world without any problems. But are they still the best, the competition is fierce.

So before you buy an eSIM card first read all my tips below!

SimOptions is the only sim card provider that also offers international prepaid sim cards for Mexico . These are pre-activated physical prepaid sim cards that will be delivered to your door step before your trip and it is plug and play when you arrive in Mexico.

Airalo, Holafly, Jetpac and Nomad only sell eSIM cards for Mexico.

Jetpac is a fairly new eSIM provider and they do not only offer eSIM solutions but also add a couple other benefits for travelers who order an eSIM via Jetpac. Traveltomtom has tested, reviewed and approved Jetpac eSIMs for Mexico.

The Traveltomtom team has tried Jetpac now in a couple different countries without any issues, only positive reviews.

One of the main reasons why Jetpac is listed as one of the best eSIMs for Mexico is because the Jetpac Mexico eSIMs also operate on the Telcel network, just like Airalo.

travel sim card for mexico

Let's check out the eSIM card plans Jetpac has for Mexico in 2024:

  • 1 GB data for 4 days = $1 USD
  • 3 GB data for 7 days = $10 USD
  • 5 GB data for 30 days = $16 USD

Click here to order a Jetpac eSIM card for Mexico .

The Jetpac eSIM plan for Mexico with 5 GB data for $16 USD is the best value eSIM card for Mexico with a rate of only $3.2 USD per Gigabyte.

You can instal your Jetpac eSIM card before your trip to Mexico, but it only activates from the moment it connects to a supported network in Mexico. That moment your days also start counting. The Jetpac eSIMs have to be installed within 1 year.

The Jetpac Mexico eSIM cards are data-only and incoming and outgoing calls are not supported. Data is only valid in Mexico and the Jetpac eSIMs operate on the Telcel 4G/LTE/5G network. Yes, the Jetpac eSIMs for Mexico are 5G ready.

An extra advantage of using a Jetpac eSIM is that you get a free VPN subscription, 50% discount on airport lounges and Fast Track passes. And they provide free lounge access if your flight is delayed. However, you will have to register your flight before you travel and in case of a delayed or canceled flight a LoungeKey voucher will automatically be provided.

These are all complimentary services that no other eSIM provider offers. For more info check the Jetpac website .

Airalo is a very reliable eSIM card provider and Traveltomtom has used Airalo uncountable times in more than 50 countries around the world. I can totally recommend using Airalo for ordering an eSIM card.

Why using Airalo? When it comes to Mexico eSIM cards Airalo has the best eSIM card plans and in contrary to Nomad and SimOptions they operate on the best mobile data network in Mexico: Telcel.

Therefore Traveltomtom recommends Airalo as one of the best eSIM cards for Mexico.

airalo esim cards for mexico

Here are the Airalo data-only eSIM card plans for Mexico for 2024:

  • 1 GB data for 7 days = $6 USD
  • 2 GB data for 15 days = $11.5 USD
  • 3 GB data for 30 days = $15.5 USD
  • 5 GB data for 30 days = $23.5 USD
  • 10 GB data for 30 days = $42 USD

Click here to order an eSIM card for Mexico from Airalo .

Airalo always has ongoing promotions with 50% off their eSIM plans so be sure to check them out!

The Airalo eSIM cards for Mexico are from Chorro Fon and they operate on the 4G/LTE network of Telcel. Unfortunately the Airalo Chorro Fon eSIM cards for Mexico are not 5G ready yet.

At the moment the best value eSIM card from Airalo gives you 10 GB data for $42 USD, which comes down to $4.2 USD per Gigabyte.

In the most popular places to visit in Mexico you will find a 4G/LTE signal and the data speed is pretty good these days. There is in fact still very little 5G in Mexico, especially on the Movistar and AT&T network.

For more info about the best 4G/5G mobile data network in Mexico check my complete guide for the best prepaid sim card for Mexico in 2024 , including network coverage maps of all the mobile internet providers.

All the Airalo eSIM cards are data-only sim cards without a phone number, so any phone/sms service is NOT supported. An Airalo eSIM card has to be installed within 1 month and after activation the credit validity starts when it connects the first time to a supported network. For more info check out the Airalo website .

SimOptions is a reputable eSIM card provider that is very much recommended by Traveltomtom. Ordering your tourist eSIM card for Mexico through SimOptions is done fast and easy.

Traveltomtom has used SimOptions uncountable times for staying connected when traveling abroad. Very reliable, never an issue and often some of the cheapest eSIM card deals.

SimOptions has their own eSIM card plans as well as international eSIM card plans. For Mexico they only sell international eSIM cards. These eSIM cards are valid in multiple countries and not only in Mexico.

three hk international esim cards for mexico

The Three HK (Hong Kong) international eSIM cards are valid in 93 countries around the world:

  • 3 GB data for 30 days = $24.90 USD
  • 5 GB data for 30 days = $34.90 USD

Unfortunately SimOptions does not specify on which network in Mexico the Three HK eSIM cards use operate in Mexico. On top of that users have reported that with these HK eSIM cards they had problems using TikTok, as per Hong Kong regulations TikTok is banned and blocked.

The good thing about the Three HK international eSIM cards is that they come with a Hong Kong phone number starting with +852. This means incoming phone calls and sms are supported. These eSIM cards do not come with calling credit, so outgoing calls/sms are not supported.

Be aware that the credit validity starts immediately after installing the eSIM, even if you are not in Mexico.

Click here to order a Three HK international eSIM card via SimOptions .

SimOptions has more eSIM cards for Mexico.

simoptions esim cards for mexico

Here are the above eSIM cards for Mexico from SimOptions for 2024:

  • 1 GB data for 7 days = $5.90 USD
  • 1 GB data for 7 days = $7.40 USD
  • 3 GB data for 15 days = $16.90 USD
  • 3 GB data for 15 days = $20.40 USD
  • 5 GB data for 15 days = $25.90 USD
  • 5 GB data for 15 days = $33.40 USD
  • 10 GB data for 14 days = $39.90 USD

Click here to order any of the above SimOptions eSIM cards for Mexico .

All the SimOptions eSIM plans for Mexico are pretty expensive compared to Nomad and Jetpac eSIMs. The best value Mexico eSIM card deal from SimOptions is the Orange Holiday World eSIM with 10 GB data for $39.90 USD which comes down to $3.99 USD per Gigabyte.

Unfortunately SimOptions doesn't specify exactly which mobile network operator in Mexico they use and therefore it is not Traveltomtom's first pick. The international eSIM cards from SimOptions are not 5G ready, so the max data speed on the SimOptions Mexico eSIM cards  is 4G/LTE.

The validity of these eSIM cards is 1 year. Apart from the Three HK eSIMs the credit validity only starts when it connects to a supported network in Mexico. For more info check the SimOptions website .

Lately I have been recommending Nomad eSIM cards a lot as they have really great deals for a lot of countries. The Nomad eSIM card plans for Mexico are not bad at all. In fact some are even better value deals than the Airalo, Jetpac and SimOptions eSIM cards.

Still Traveltomtom considers Jetpac as the best eSIM card for traveling to Mexico. That is because the Nomad eSIM cards operate on the 4G/LTE mobile data network of Movistar and unfortunately not on Telcel.

However, if you visit to one of the  amazing places to visit in Mexico  and don't travel around too much, a Nomad eSIM card is a good choice. An eSIM card that uses the Telcel network is recommended for those going off the beaten path in Mexico.

Nomad has two different Mexico eSIM plans: regular plans and daily plans.

Regular plans

nomad esim cards for mexico

Here are the Nomad eSIM card plans for Mexico:

  • 3 GB data for 30 days = $14 USD
  • 5 GB data for 30 days = $18 USD
  • 10 GB data for 30 days = $28 USD

Click here to order an eSIM card for Mexico from Nomad .

The Nomad website is a little less user friendly for finding the best eSIM cards for traveling to Mexico. You can't see all eSIM card deals in one overview, you have to click a little here and there.

As you can see above the prices for Nomad Mexico eSIMs aren't bad at all compared to Airalo, SimOptions, Jetpac, etc. The best value eSIM card for Mexico from Nomad is the one with 10 GB data for $28 USD,  which comes down to $2.8 USD per Gigabyte.

nomad mexico esim card specifications

The Nomad eSIM cards are from eSIM Go and they are data-only. Incoming and outgoing calls and sms are NOT supported. They operate on the LTE/4G network of Movistar.

The Nomad Mexico eSIM cards have to be installed on your phone within 30 days and after installation its validity starts when it connects for the first time to a supported network in Mexico. Basically when the plane lands. For more info check the Nomad website .

Daily plans

nomad mexico esim card daily plans

Nomad also has daily plans. These eSIM cards could perfect for those going on a short trip to Mexico. You basically get 1 GB high speed data per 24 hours. After you used 1 GB data your data speed is reduced to 512 Kbps, which is similar to an E signal. Check the following daily plans:

  • 1 GB data per day for 1 day = $4 USD
  • 1 GB data per day for 3 day = $11 USD
  • 1 GB data per day for 5 day = $18 USD
  • 1 GB data per day for 7 day = $25 USD
  • 1 GB data per day for 10 day = $35 USD

Personally, these daily plans would not be enough for me as I can easily spend 1 GB data in just 1 hour bus or train ride.

Watching TikTok video for about 45 minutes is about 1 GB data, watching Instagram reels for 30 minutes is also already 1 GB data. It depends how many gigabytes you use per day, but it could be a great eSIM card for traveling to Mexico.

Click here to order this Nomad daily plan eSIM card for Mexico from Nomad .

Holafly sells eSIM cards for Mexico with unlimited data. Traveltomtom is not a fan of eSIM cards with 'unlimited' data, but more about that later. Here are the Holafly eSIM plans for traveling to the United States of Mexico:

  • 1 day 'unlimited' data = $6 USD
  • 2 days 'unlimited' data = $10 USD
  • 3 days 'unlimited' data = $13 USD
  • 4 days 'unlimited' data = $16 USD
  • 5 days 'unlimited' data = $21 USD
  • 6 days 'unlimited' data = $25 USD
  • 7 days 'unlimited' data = $29 USD
  • 8 days 'unlimited' data = $31 USD
  • 9 days 'unlimited' data = $35 USD
  • 10 days 'unlimited' data = $37 USD
  • 11 days 'unlimited' data = $40 USD
  • 14 days 'unlimited' data = $48 USD
  • 20 days 'unlimited' data = $64 USD
  • 30 days 'unlimited' data = $75 USD

The Holafly eSIM cards for Mexico are data-only and incoming and outgoing calls/sms are NOT supported. These eSIMs do not come with a phone number. The Holafly eSIMs operate on the 4G/LTE network of Telcel and AT&T. The Holafly eSIMs for Mexico are not 5G ready.

You can use a hotspot on the Holafly Mexico eSIM cards, but it is capped at 500 MB per day.

Why 'unlimited'? Because Holafly eSIMs have a so-called 'Fair Use Policy' (FUP) which means that after you used an X amount of GB per day your data speed is reduced to an E signal.

Traveltomtom has had bad experiences in the past with eSIM cards with unlimited data and an FUP in the past. Suddenly your data speed is slowed down for 24 hours because you apparently used too much data. More info later.

Personally, my biggest frustration is slow data speed. Therefore Traveltomtom's is not a fan of eSIM cards with 'unlimited' data with an FUP and therefore it is not my first recommendation when looking for an eSIM for Mexico.

Telcel now also sells eSIM cards for tourists in official Telcel stores in Mexico. That means tourists can get an prepaid sim card in a Telcel phone shop as an eSIM, but only on arrival in Mexico, not on the internet.

telcel mexico prepaid sim card plans

  • 3 GB data + unlimited social media + unlimited calling/texting for 30 days = $200 MXN - $11 USD
  • 4 GB data + unlimited social media + unlimited calling/texting for 30 days = $300 MXN - $16.5 USD
  • 6 GB data + unlimited social media + unlimited calling/texting for 30 days = $300 MXN - $28 USD

You can not buy a Telcel eSIM in a convenient store.

Why not showing Movistar and AT&T eSIMs? Trust me you want a Telcel based eSIM when traveling to Mexico. For that reason alone Traveltomtom recommends ordering an eSIM from either  Jetpac or  Airalo  and not from SimOptions, Nomad or Holafly.

What is the cheapest eSIM card for Mexico?

Truly the cheapest eSIM card for Mexico is a  Jetpac  eSIM for just $1 USD, but it is only valid for 4 days.

SimOptions has another cheap eSIM for Mexico for just $5.90 USD for 1 GB for 7 days. Airalo offers the same eSIM card plan but charges $6 USD. These eSIMs are only valid in Mexico and do not support calling and texting.

Why ordering an eSIM card for traveling in Mexico

eSIM cards are the easiest way to stay connected when traveling to Mexico in 2024 and you can arrange everything online in just a couple clicks. No more visiting a sim card shop and swapping physical sim cards. Order online, scan the QR code, follow the steps and you are connected in less than 2 minutes.

The most important reason to get an eSIM card is because we would like to stay connected on our trip to Mexico without wasting money on high roaming costs. Our smartphones are pretty useless without a working data connection. Think about ordering a taxi through an app, finding nearby friends, restaurants and bars. Get directions from Google Maps or simply staying in touch with family back home, check your social media apps on long bus rides or your banking apps when paying contactless.

One of the best things about arriving in Mexico with an activated eSIM card is that you are online as soon as the plane lands. More about when to instal your eSIM card later.

There are so many reasons to stay connected when traveling to Mexico, but the most important reason is that it makes your trip to Mexico so much more convenient and fun!

At the same time we don’t want to waste money on high roaming charges. Many mobile internet operators still charge $3 USD per MB for data roaming, that means just opening the Instagram app will already cost you 20 MB * $3 USD = $60 USD! Not kidding… it still is very common in 2024.

eSIM cards are the easiest way to avoid high roaming charges!

Overseas data roaming plans

So what about overseas data roaming plans? Well, not recommended! Why? Did you read the small letters at what data speed you can use data roaming? Pretty much all mobile internet operators limit the data speed for overseas data roaming plans, which means you end up with 3G data speed. Do you have the patience to handle 3G? It is frustrating when all around you in pretty  much every amazing tourist destinations in Mexico there is 4G/LTE available.

And price-wise it should be a no brainer since you have seen how affordable the eSIM cards for Mexico are.

Uncountable times travel friends have asked me: ''Tom, can I use your hotspot? My data roaming plan is so slow, it is barely working!''. Trust me, get yourself an eSIM card or an international prepaid sim card for traveling to Mexico.

Spend a couple dollars extra and be connected all the time instead of begging for WiFi or a hotspot from friends.

Where to buy an eSIM card for Mexico?

You can buy an eSIM card for Mexico on the internet through an eSIM card provider. There are multiple eSIM card providers for Mexico. Traveltomtom compared multiple eSIM card providers and concluded that the above mentioned ones are the best eSIM card providers in 2024: SimOptions, Airalo, Nomad, Jetpac, Holafly.

When buying an eSIM card for Mexico through one of the above recommended eSIM providers you only need your email address and the eSIM card is instantly ready to use after installation. There is no ID registration needed.

On arrival in Mexico

There are 3 main mobile internet provider in Mexico: AT&T, Movistar and Telcel. As of September 2024 some of the mobile internet operators in Mexico offer eSIM cards for tourists. Other only provide physical prepaid sim cards for tourists.

For more info about buying a prepaid sim card for tourists in Mexico in 2024  click on the link to read my complete guide and comparison of all the mobile internet providers in Mexico, including a comparison of the 4G/5G network. In that comparison you will clearly see the difference in network strength between AT&T, Movistar and Telcel.

Flying into Mexico and landing at Mexico City Airport then you can buy a tourist sim card for Mexico on arrival at the airport. Click on the link to read Traveltomtom's complete guide on where to buy a local prepaid sim card at Mexico City Airport .

At the international airports in Mexico you will find several sim card shops and phone stores that sell all kind of tourist sim cards. If you can't see any phone shops you can try your luck at the convenient stores. They randomly charge you something but if you are lucky they help you set up the sim card.

But as mentioned before the sim cards shops and convenient stores in Mexico only sell physical prepaid sim cards for tourists, no eSIMs.

When to order/activate an eSIM card for Mexico?

You can order an eSIM card for Mexico pretty much any time you want. Most eSIM cards have to be installed on a phone within 1 month after purchasing, some even within 1 year, so you have time.

More important therefore is when do you instal/activate the eSIM card. The validity of some eSIMs start straight after the installation, other eSIM cards only start their validity when they connect the first time to a supported network.

Traveltomtom advices to instal your eSIM card on the day of departure to Mexico or before. You will need a stable internet connection to instal your eSIM card. Pretty much all the international airports in Mexico have free public WiFi which works ok most of the time, so you could use that to install your eSIM card.

Just make sure it is a stable internet connection. Therefore just to make sure Traveltomtom advices you to install/activate your eSIM card in your home country.

My personal advice is to instal your tourist eSIM card for Mexico before you get into the plane, because then as soon as the plane lands you will be connected to the internet without any problems.

How do I know all this? Traveltomtom has visited Mexico 5 times and traveled all around the country. Check out my list of the best places to visit in Mexico .

How to activate an eSIM card

Installing and activating an eSIM card is made as simple as possible. Everyone can activate an eSIM card and the instructions on how to are very detailed and will be send to you instantly by email. But wait, it gets even easier. Just scan the QR code.

When you order an eSIM card plan for Mexico you instantly receive a summery of your order including a QR-code after the payment is processed.

You will see a summary of your eSIM card order including a QR code on your screen and at the same time you will also receive an email with the same QR code. The email contains instructions on how to instal and activate your Mexico eSIM card.

But installing an activating an eSIM card is as easy as scanning the QR code with the same phone where you want to activate the eSIM card on. The QR contains all the information about your Mexico eSIM card.

Once you scan the code you will be guided through a couple simple steps and within less than 1 minute your eSIM card is successfully installed.

Very important is that you are connected to the internet when installing your eSIM card otherwise you will get an error and issues can occur.

Tip: if you order an eSIM card with the same phone where you want to instal the eSIM card on then ask a friend or someone nearby to take a photo of the QR code and then you scan the QR code from his/her phone and start the installation.

Things to know before ordering an eSIM card for Mexico

Here are some general tips and FAQ’s for using eSIM cards when traveling abroad. These tips do not only apply for Mexico eSIM cards, but are things you have to know before buying an eSIM card in general.

Make sure your phone is unlocked

To make sure you didn’t miss this, let me say this again: eSIM cards only work in UNLOCKED phones. If your phone is unlocked then you can use any eSIM card without any problems.

If your phone is locked then ask your mobile internet provider from your home country to unlock your phone before your trip to Mexico. It is likely that your mobile internet provider will charge you a fee for unlocking your smartphone.

If you are unable to unlock your phone you can look into getting a portable WiFi for staying connected when traveling to Mexico or better… bring a second unlocked phone on your trip to Mexico and use it as a portable WiFi device.

Which smartphones support eSIM cards?

Another very important thing you have to check before buying an eSIM card is if your smartphone supports eSIM cards. If you have any of the latest smartphones then there is no need to worry, all new smartphones of the well known brands support eSIM cards.

The fastest way to find out if your phone is eSIM compatible is by asking Google the question: is my (your phone model) eSIM compatible? Simple as that!

Can I trust these eSIM card providers?

All the eSIM card providers for Mexico recommended mentioned in this guide are reputable eSIM card providers reviewed and tested by Traveltomtom. All of them are licensed third party companies and resellers that partner or work directly with the mobile internet providers in Mexico.

Traveltomtom has used  Airalo  and  SimOptions  sim cards now for more than 5 years and never really faced a major issue.

The Traveltomtom Team has extensively tested and reviewed  Nomad  and they have proven to be a reliable eSIM card provider. However, some mixed reviews have come back from the Traveltomtom Team about connectivity and activation.

Jetpac is a fairly new eSIM provider, but Traveltomtom only received positive feedback and excellent reviews about the eSIMs and services of Jetpac.

Since Traveltomtom is not a fan of eSIM cards with unlimited data and an FUP I hardly use Holafly, but when I did I was not happy. So now I let the Traveltomtom Team randomly test Holafly and just like myself, mixed reviews have come back. Some positive, some negative.

Traveltomtom does NOT sell Mexico eSIMs, Traveltomtom only compares and recommends you to use eSIM cards for traveling to Mexico.

All eSIM card providers have their own Helpdesk which you can contact may you encounter any problems or in case you want to claim a refund.

Can I keep my phone number from home with a Mexico eSIM card?

Yes, you can and this is for many people a reason to order an eSIM card to stay connected when traveling to Mexico. An eSIM card can be used next to your physical or eSIM card from your home country at the same time. You do not need a dual-sim phone for using an eSIM card.

So you can have multiple eSIM cards installed on your phone? Yes, no problem at all!

For example: you can turn off the mobile data from your sim card from home but still use it for texting and calling. Your new Mexico eSIM card you can be used at the same time just for data to ensure you are not wasting money on high roaming costs.

This is also the trick to keep receiving sms for example for OTP (one time password) sms to login to applications.

Switching between physical and eSIM cards is a matter of turning them on/off in the settings. Just always make sure your sim card from home is switched off for data roaming.

Can I make phone calls with a Mexico eSIM card?

No, unfortunately all the tourist eSIM cards for Mexico available on the internet do NOT include calling and texting. All the eSIM cards from Jetpac ,  SimOptions ,  Airalo , Holafly and Nomad  are data-only eSIM cards and any outgoing calls/sms are not supported.

If you buy a prepaid sim card for tourists on arrival in Mexico in a store or at the airport then you get (unlimited) calling and texting included.

Most hotels, restaurants and tour companies in Mexico have WhatsApp services, so you can easily give them a call through WhatsApp. There is no direct need for local calling minutes.

Does a Mexico eSIM card come with a phone number?

No, most of the Mexico eSIM cards that you can buy on the internet do not come with a phone number, which also means you can not receive any phone calls or sms.

There is one exception and that is the Three HK international eSIM card that you can order via SimOptions . This eSIM comes with a Hong Kong phone number starting with +852.

Local prepaid sim cards that you can buy on arrival in a phone store in Mexico offer incoming and outgoing calling and texting.

In the above Mexico eSIM card comparison you can find all the specifications per eSIM.

Can I use 5G on an Mexico eSIM card?

Yes, Jetpac now offers 5G on their Mexico eSIM cards. Jetpac operates on the Telcel network, the best mobile data network in Mexico.

The max data speed on all other eSIMs is 4G/LTE. That said, AT&T and Movistar barely offer 5G in Mexico anyway. The only provider with a decent 5G network is Telcel, but compared to other countries it is also still fairly small. There is not much 5G in Mexico yet as of September 2024.

Are there eSIM cards for Mexico with unlimited data?

Traveltomtom is in general not a fan of data sim cards with unlimited data. Why? There is mostly a so-called FUP (Fair Use Policy), which sometimes is already 2 GB data per day. That means that after 2 GB usage your internet will be slowed down. Sometimes eSIM cards have an FUP of 30, 50, 80 GB data per month. It depends on the eSIM specifications.

In general, unlimited data is pretty much never unlimited data at max speed. And trust me the reduced data speed will creep you out as it barely works!

So yes, there are eSIM cards for Mexico with unlimited data but always read the fine print for more details, terms & conditions.

Jetpac, SimOptions and Airalo do NOT offer eSIM cards for Mexico with unlimited data. No hidden fees, no Fair Use Policy. Clear terms & conditions!

Holafly is different and Holafly only offers eSIM cards with unlimited data plans per day. However, Holafly but does NOT specify what is the exact so-called Fair Use Policy (FUP) and therefore it is not Traveltomtom's first recommendation.

On Holafly eSIM cards I experienced a reduce in data speed after using more than 2 GB per day. When I contacted support they explained me that I had to wait for 24 hours until my data speed was restored to normal.

Those 24 hours were a nightmare as my data speed was barely enough to use WhatsApp. Social media apps were not even loading!

Again, Traveltomtom does NOT recommend eSIM cards for Mexico with unlimited data. But if you think you will not use more than 2 GB per day, then this might be your favorite eSIM card.

However, if the FUP is 2 GB per day then what is the point of having an eSIM card with unlimited data!? Right?

Some of the Nomad or SimOptions eSIMs give you 10 GB data, which for most travelers is more than enough for their trip to Mexico. If this is not enough you can also order 2 eSIM cards and after one is done, you instal the second one.

There are a lot of different specifications per eSIM card. Another reason why I advice you to take a close look at my comparison of the best eSIM cards for traveling to Mexico in 2024 before choosing your favorite.

Are eSIM cards the best way to stay connected when traveling to Mexico?

eSIM cards are the easiest and fastest way to get data on your phone when traveling to Mexico, but what is the best way?

There are 3 ways to stay connected when traveling to Mexico:

Local prepaid sim cards

International prepaid sim cards.

Let's compare eSIM cards, local prepaid sim cards and international prepaid sim cards, for you to find out what is your preferred way of staying connected.

In general if you use a lot of data then local prepaid sim cards are a cheaper way to stay connected, depending on the length of your trip.

Local Mexico prepaid sim cards for tourists offer bigger data plans than the tourist eSIM cards you order online. In fact local prepaid sim cards with data are fairly cheap for tourists in Mexico. For around $10 USD you get a physical sim card plan with unlimited social media and 3 GB data.

However, a local prepaid sim card can only be purchased on arrival in Mexico in a phone store or at the airport but NOT on the internet.

Another big difference is that local prepaid sim cards have the advantage that they come with a local phone number and mostly with calling minutes and sms bundles. That means incoming and outgoing calls are supported.

More info about the best Mexico sim cards for tourists can be found in my complete guide for buying a prepaid sim card for Mexico in 2024 .

If your smartphone is not eSIM compatible you can order an international prepaid sim card for traveling to Mexico. Some of them are great for Mexico as well as in all other countries in for example Europe, Americas and Asia and you can easily order them online.

If after visiting Mexico you are traveling onwards in Asia then check Traveltomtom's list of the best sim cards for traveling internationally in 2024 .

international prepaid sim cards for mexico

As I mentioned before SimOptions also sells physical prepaid sim cards for traveling internationally.

A pre-activated physical sim card will be delivered to your door step before your trip to Mexico. You put this physical sim card in your phone and as soon as the plane touches the ground in Mexico and the sim card connects to a supported network you are online. Plug and play!

Click here to order an international prepaid sim card for Mexico directly online via SimOptions .

As explained throughout the article there are two different eSIM cards:

  • eSIM cards that you buy on the internet through a third party
  • eSIM cards that you buy in Mexico in a mobile internet provider store

However, as of September 2024 the mobile internet providers in Mexico do not all offer eSIM cards for tourists. Most of them still only offer physical prepaid sim cards for tourists in Mexico.

On arrival at any International Airport in Mexico it is not possible to get an eSIM, only physical prepaid sim cards for tourists. Some Telcel stores now offer eSIMs for tourists, but it is still a hit or miss.

eSIM cards vs. local prepaid sim cards

Getting an eSIM card on the internet is the easiest way to stay connected when traveling to Mexico, no doubt! You arrange everything online within just a couple clicks. Right here, right now and you are all set for your trip to Mexico.

You arrive prepared and there is no need to visit a sim card shop on arrival in Mexico. As soon as the plane lands, you are online!

But what is cheaper? An eSIM card or a local prepaid sim card for tourists?

When we compare the prices for Mexico eSIM cards with the prices for local prepaid sim cards in Mexico, it is an easy conclusion that local prepaid sim cards are much more affordable as you get many more Gigabytes for the same price.

In fact, for around $10 USD you can already get a prepaid sim card with unlimited social media and 3 GB data for 1 month. For more info check out my article about the best prepaid sim cards for Mexico in 2024 .

But local prepaid sim cards can only be bought in Mexico on arrival in a sim card shop or at the airport and a tourist eSIM card for Mexico can be bought in 2 minutes on the internet before your trip to Mexico.

Remember that some of the eSIM cards for Mexico also go down to only $2.45 USD per Gigabyte as well.

After a long flight you just want to get to your hotel and it is often a big task to go to a sim card store and get connected. With eSIM cards you buy on the internet you are connected as soon as the plane lands.

For this convenience Traveltomtom definitely recommends to order one of the listed best eSIM cards for Mexico in the comparison above.

Many reasons why a lot of travelers simply get an eSIM card for Mexico. Faster, easier, less stress and even cheaper depending on how much data you need.

Another difference between a local prepaid sim card and an eSIM card is that eSIM cards are often through a third party, a so called MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator). These MVNO's operate on the network of one of the main mobile internet operators and basically buy bandwidth.

This may sound a little bit too technical, but what it means is that eSIM cards through an MVNO are the last ones in line when the line is busy. Especially during peak times, the performance of an eSIM cards is less compared to a local prepaid sim card from a mobile internet operator.

Bottomline: the data speed of eSIM cards can be less compared to a local prepaid Mexico sim card.

I am sure some of the above tips for finding the best eSIM card for your trip to Mexico were helpful. I hope that after reading through my comparison, tips and tricks it was easier to make a decision and order your eSIM card for Mexico right away.

Best 4G/5G mobile data network in Mexico

Traveltomtom researched the 4G/5G network of all the mobile internet providers in Mexico and compared the mobile internet coverage maps of AT&T, Movistar and Telcel.

Although the above mobile data network coverage map of Telcel is updated for 2024 it is not 100% accurate. However, it is a great reference to compare the 4G/5G networks of the mobile internet providers in Mexcio in 2024.

Telcel has the strongest 4G/5G network in Mexico. see the network coverage map below.

This is Movistar 4G/5G network coverage map.

movistar 4g 5g network coverage map mexico 2024

Traveltomtom came to the conclusion that there is a huge difference between the 4G/5G coverage of AT&T, Movistar and Telcel. For more information check out Traveltomtom's article about the best prepaid sim card for Mexico in 2024 .

I am sure now you understand why Traveltomtom recommends an eSIM card for Mexico that operates on the Telcel network.

  • Jetpac eSIM cards for Mexico operate on the 4G/LTE network of Telcel
  • Nomad eSIM cards for Mexico operate on the 4G/LTE network of Movistar
  • Airalo eSIM cards for Mexico operate on the 4G/LTE network of Telcel
  • Holafly eSIM cards for Mexico operate on the 4G/LTE network of Telcel and AT&T
  • SimOptions does not specify on which network their eSIMs operate in Mexico
