Jordan updates entry rules for tourists: everything you need to know before you go

Lonely Planet 's pick for the Most Welcoming Destination of 2021 has relaxed the entry rules for tourists.

Travellers visiting Jordan no longer need to quarantine for seven days upon arrival. Instead, they must take a PCR test before flying to the kingdom, and then another upon arrival. This must be paid for in advance and costs 28 Jordanian dinars ($39.50). Children under 5 do not need to take the test.

An application form must also be completed before travelling, which can be found here.  Upon successful completion and submission of the form, a confirmation code will be sent to tourists via email; this code must be presented when checking in for any flights to Jordan.

The pre-Covid-19 PCR test must be taken within 72 hours of departure, results from which will need to be shown at check in. All travellers must also download the Aman app before arriving in the country.

These updated rules are designed to help boost Jordan's tourism industry. The country reopened to travellers in September 2020, but only travellers from 15 destinations could fly into the kingdom without the need to quarantine. This has now been rolled out to almost all arrivals.

What rules are in place at the airport?

International flights are able to land at and depart from Queen Alia International Airport in Jordan's capital. Updated safety measures are in place throughout the airport including compulsory face masks for travellers and staff, and social-distancing markers.

A Covid-19 screening laboratory has been installed where all arriving passengers are tested for the virus. Previously, travellers had to wait here for their Covid-19 test results, which could take up to five hours. Now, most travellers will be able to proceed directly to their accommodation to wait for test results, which will be sent within 24 hours by SMS.

In the departures area of the airport, self-service check-in machines have been installed to reduce interaction between passengers and airport staff.

Foreigners must also have valid medical insurance for the duration of their stay, which should cover coronavirus treatment. Any travellers who do not have this could face fines of up to 10,000 Jordanian dinars.

Who can travel to Jordan?

Visa procedures remain as they were pre-Covid, and countries are no longer being divided into three categories relating to the scale of the coronavirus outbreak in each destination. Instead, travellers from almost all countries will undergo the same procedures when arriving in the country. The notable exception is those travelling from the UK, who are currently not permitted to enter Jordan.

The traffic-light system may be reintroduced if countries are thought to be high risk for the virus, but until then there are no quarantine requirements for arrivals in Jordan.

Previously, travellers arriving from "green" countries could visit Jordan without the need to quarantine. A negative PCR-test result taken no more than 72 hours before flight departure time was required, and visitors were expected to do a second test on arrival in Amman.

Travellers flying to Jordan from countries classified as yellow – which included the UAE – or red, had to complete seven days quarantine in a government-approved facility, followed by a further seven days home or hotel quarantine.

People arriving from "red" designated destinations followed the same rules as those arriving from yellow countries, but also had to wear an electric tracking bracelet.

Which airlines are flying to Jordan?

Several airlines have resumed international commercial flights to Jordan. From the UAE, Emirates is flying daily to Amman from Dubai and flydubai operates on weekdays. Etihad is flying from Abu Dhabi and Air Arabia from Sharjah.

Royal Jordanian, the national airline of Jordan, is also flying to several destinations including Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Are hotels in Jordan open?

Yes, many hotels in Jordan reopened in July 2020 as part of a drive to boost the domestic tourism sector. All reopened properties have safety measures in place including temperature checks and sanitising hands upon entry. Some smaller guesthouses remain closed, so it's best to double check.

Travellers hoping to explore ancient Petra or the wilds of Wadi Rum will find that most lodgings in these areas are operating again. In regions populated by  Bedouin , tourism is often the main source of income so people are eager to welcome guests again.

Jordan has also been awarded the "Safe Travels" stamp by the World Travel and Tourism Council, which recognises it as a safe destination to visit.

Most tourism destinations are  open with safety measures in place to protect travellers against the coronavirus.

These include social distancing and increased hygiene practices, as well as preventive measures as stated by the Ministry of Health. All public areas and tourism attractions are now routinely sanitised and people must wear face masks and gloves in public places.

As Jordan continues to battle the coronavirus crisis, a curfew remains in place between midnight and 6am every day, except Fridays. Public swimming pools and gyms are set to reopen from Monday, February 1. Hotels, cafes, restaurants, mosques and churches have already reopened, but are operating at limited capacity.

Other attractions such as cinemas, entertainment venues, children’s play areas, exhibition and conference centres are due to reopen in March.

With a robust tourism industry, thriving economy, and world-renowned business opportunities, The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan is a very popular destination located in the heart of the Middle East.

Nationals of Bahrain, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and the UAE can enter Jordan visa-free and stay for up to three (3) months. Nationals of Egypt and Palestine can also enter visa-free for stays of up to one (1) month. Some foreign nationals are obliged to obtain an electronic visa before arriving in Jordan OR must obtain a visa on arrival. All other nationalities must obtain prior approval to travel to Jordan in the form of a sticker visa. There are several types of visas that applicants can select from.

Validity periods of Jordanian visas vary depending on the visa type and the purpose of travel. Applicants should be sure to select the visa type and number of entries that best suits their needs. For those eligible for the electronic visa, the validity period ranges from three (3) months up to five (5) years.

Travelers coming to Jordan must select the best visa option to suit their needs. The following are the visa types offered by the Jordanian Ministry of Interior:

• This visa is only for foreign nationals who do not need prior approval to travel to Jordan. It can be obtained electronically for periods of three (3) months up to five (5) years. 
• This is a visa for foreign nationals who require prior authorization to enter Jordan to visit the Kingdom for stays of three (3) months up to five (5) years.
• Foreign nationals who require prior entry to enter Jordan and wish to pass through the country on their way to another destination can apply for this visa type.
• This visa is for foreign nationals who need prior approval to enter Jordan and are already inside the country . They can apply for this visa that grants them permission to exit and re-enter the country. Validity periods can extend for up to six (6) months.
• This is a visa for foreign workers working in Jordan and it is issued for stays of up to three (3) months.
• This visa type is reserved for international students who are foreign nationals that require prior approval to enter Jordan. The validity period will depend on the unique study course.
• This visa type is for the purpose of tourism only and must be applied for through an accredited Jordanian tourism office. The approval notice can be obtained electronically.
• This visa is issued to foreign nationals who wish to pursue medical treatment at a medical institution in Jordan.

Jordan Visa Requirements

All applicants for a Jordan visa must meet the requirements for the visa type they wish to obtain. The following are the basic requirements for all visa types:

A copy of the applicant's passport or travel document must be valid for a period of at least 6 months.

A copy of the residence of the applicant/visitor in the country where they reside for a period of not less than 6 months if they reside in a country other than their country of origin.

The visa application can be filled out online through the Ministry of Interior E-Services Site.

Applicants must have a valid form of payment to cover the visa fees. Accepted payment methods include E-Fawateer.com, direct payment through a local bank, or payment using a credit card (MasterCard, Visa, American Express).

Additional requirements may apply depending on the visa type and the purpose of travel. These requirements may include a work application letter from the Jordanian Ministry of Labor, a detailed medical report, or a letter of acceptance from an accredited academic institution.

Applicants can use the Ministry of Interior E-Services site to complete and submit their applications. The following steps can be taken by all applicants to complete their online visa application:

Applicants must register with their email and create an account with the Jordanian Ministry of Interior E-Services website or mobile application.

After selecting the correct service (visa type), applicants can complete the online application form and upload the required documents.

Accepted payment methods include credit cards (MasterCard, Visa, American Express), direct payment through a local bank, or payment through E-Fawateer.com.

Applicants can check the status of their application at any time by logging into their account. Processing times will vary depending on the visa type.

If a personal interview is required, the applicant will be asked to visit the nearest embassy or consulate.

The applicant will be notified of the final visa application decision electronically through their account, by SMS, or by email. The approved visa will be available through the applicant’s electronic account.

The Jordanian Ministry of Interior offers both a website for their E-Services as well as a mobile application that applicants can download and use to check the status of their application during processing.

All foreign nationals that require prior approval to enter Jordan can apply for their Jordan visa type online through the Ministry of Interior website or mobile application. Exceptionally, the Tourism visa must be applied for through an accredited Jordanian tourism office.

The processing times for Jordanian visas may vary depending on the visa type, purpose of travel, and the complexity of the visa application. Generally, normal applications take 14 working days to process, and urgent (expedited) applications take 5 working days to process.

A Jordan visa is an electronic travel document that allows foreign nationals who require prior approval to enter Jordan lawfully. There are several different types of Jordan visas that applicants can select from.

The visa fees for a Jordanian visa will vary depending on the visa type, the duration of stay, and the number of entries. For a normal application, the service fee is typically 2 JOD (2.82 USD). The service fee for urgent (expedited) applications is 100 JOD (140.99 USD). There is no Service Fee for the tourist visa.

Situation in Israel, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip

Due to recent events in Israel, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, operations at the land borders with Jordan may be affected by reduced hours or closure on short notice.

Land borders to the north and south with Israel remain open.

If you’re planning to cross the border between Jordan and Israel, you should verify the status of the border crossings before you travel.

Since October 13, 2023, protests related to the ongoing conflict in Israel, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip have been taking place regularly at various locations across Jordan.

Protest activity occurs throughout the week with larger demonstrations typically occurring on Fridays.

Major gathering places have included:

• places of worship, especially:
• the Al Husseini Mosque in downtown Amman
• the Al Kalouti mosque near the Israeli embassy in Rabieh, Amman
• refugee camps, including:
• the al-Wehdat refugee camp in South Amman
• the Baqa’a refugee camp near Ein Al-Basha on the Amman-Jerash highway
• the American Embassy and surrounding areas in Abdoun, Amman
• various neighborhoods in East Amman

Most protests have been peaceful and contained by security forces, but isolated incidents of minor clashes with security forces have been reported.

There could be additional calls to march to the border between Jordan and Israel where confrontations could occur between protestors and security forces along the Dead Sea highway and surrounding areas.

Jordanian authorities may employ enhanced measures to respond to demonstrations, including:

• deploying additional security forces
• using crowd dispersal methods
• establishing checkpoints and roadblocks

If you are near an affected area:

• exercise caution
• expect heightened security measures
• avoid all demonstrations and gatherings
• follow the instructions of local authorities

Areas within 5 km of the borders with Syria and Iraq, with the exception of the tourist site Umm Qais

Clashes involving small arms and mortar fire have occurred in the areas bordering Syria and Iraq, due to the ongoing conflict in these countries. Borders with Syria and Iraq are highly militarized. Government security forces may engage vehicles and people coming into Jordan illegally.

Refugee camps

Operation of refugee camps is managed by the Government of Jordan. You must receive the Government of Jordan’s approval for any travel into refugee camps.

There’s a threat of terrorism. Transnational and domestic terrorist groups have demonstrated the capability to plan and implement attacks in Jordan. Terrorist attacks could occur at any time.

Jordanian security forces have increased their operations across the country. This has resulted in the deaths of suspected terrorists, bystanders and local security officers. Further counterterrorism operations are expected throughout Jordan. Heightened security measures are in place.

Targets could include:

• government buildings, including police stations
• places of worship
• airports and other transportation hubs and networks
• public areas such as tourist attractions, restaurants, bars, coffee shops, shopping centres, markets, hotels and other sites frequented by foreigners

Always be aware of your surroundings when in public places.

Demonstrations

Demonstrations occur regularly. Even peaceful demonstrations can turn violent at any time. They can also lead to disruptions to traffic and public transportation.

• Avoid areas where demonstrations and large gatherings are taking place
• Follow the instructions of local authorities
• Monitor local media for information on ongoing demonstrations

Demonstrations have occurred in Amman at locations including:

• the Al Husseini Mosque, downtown;
• in front of Parliament in Abdali District;
• in front of the Prime Ministry at 4th circle on Zahran Street.

Outside of Amman

Other cities in Jordan where large demonstrations occur frequently include Irbid, Kerak, Ma’an, Madaba, Mafraq, Salt and Zarqa.

Mass gatherings (large-scale events)

Petty Crime

The crime rate is low by regional standards. Petty crime occurs, especially at tourist sites and in crowded areas. Theft of vehicles, assaults, robberies and attempted residential break-ins also occur.

• Ensure that your personal belongings, including your passport and other travel documents, are secure at all times
• Always carry a photocopy of identification documents for identification purposes

Incidents of celebratory gunfire, while illegal, are common and occasionally result in injury and death.

Tribal violence

Clashes between tribes, clans or families periodically erupt and sometimes involve the use of firearms. Response from authorities is often delayed or non-existent.

Women’s safety

Women travelling alone may be subject to some forms of harassment and verbal abuse.

Sexual harassment and assaults have occurred.

Women have been detained when reporting a sexual assault. Women must prove that any sexual activity was not consensual to avoid being charged under extramarital sex statutes.

• travel in groups
• travel during daylight hours
• sit in the back seat of taxis.

Road safety

Road conditions and road safety can vary greatly throughout the country. Driving conditions may be hazardous during winter. Accidents are common but more frequent during Ramadan and Eid.

Some drivers don’t respect traffic laws. Drivers may be aggressive and drive very close to each other. It’s typical for drivers not to use signals to indicate turns or lane changes. Drivers often talk or text on mobile phones while driving, although this is illegal in Jordan.

Off-road driving can be hazardous, and you should only do it in a convoy of four-wheel-drive vehicles with an experienced guide.

• Avoid driving at night in rural areas, as roaming animals and insufficient lighting create hazards after dark
• Leave your travel itinerary with a family member or friend
• Be well prepared and equipped with gasoline, water, food and a cellular phone

If you’re involved in an accident

Many drivers involved in an accident may avoid calling the police and try to negotiate a settlement instead. However, they may later try to file a claim against you.

In the event of an accident causing personal injury, the driver may be held for several days until responsibility and appropriate restitution is determined.

To avoid legal issues, call the police to attend the scene of the accident and assess responsibility.

Public transportation

Public transportation is usually very crowded. It can be uncomfortable.

The cleanliness and mechanical reliability of taxis vary considerably. Book taxis through hotels.

Vehicles booked through ride-hailing applications are generally more reliable and in better condition than taxis in Jordan.

Every country or territory decides who can enter or exit through its borders. The Government of Canada cannot intervene on your behalf if you do not meet your destination’s entry or exit requirements.

Tourist visa

Required, and valid for 30 days. You may obtain a visa upon arrival if you travel by air or enter Jordan at the following border crossings:

• Sheikh Hussein Bridge
• Wadi Araba (Aqaba)

Due to recent events in Israel, West Bank and the Gaza Strip, operations at the land borders with Jordan may be affected by reduced hours or closure on short notice.

You need to obtain a visa online or from a Jordanian diplomatic mission prior to travelling if you’re planning on entering Jordan at the King Hussein Bridge (Allenby) border crossing.

You can extend the validity of a visitor visa at any police station.

If you overstay your visa, you’ll be fined when leaving the country.

Business visa

First, you need a tourism visa to enter. Then, you must obtain a residency permit from Jordan’s Ministry of Interior upon arrival.

Residency Permit

You must obtain a tourist visa to enter Jordan. Once in Jordan, you may apply for a residency permit from the Ministry of Interior.

Jordan only issues visas at:

• international airports
• the Sheikh Hussein Bridge border crossing
• the Wadi Araba (Aqaba) border crossing

Jordan doesn’t issue visas at the King Hussein Bridge (Allenby) border crossing between Jordan and the West Bank.

Health entry requirements

You must take a medical exam to obtain a residency permit, including mandatory testing for tuberculosis, HIV and hepatitis C.

Other entry requirements

Canadians who were previously in Jordan under a Refugee Status Determination process may be subject to different entry requirements and should contact the nearest Jordanian Embassy before travel.

Register with the police for stays of more than 2 weeks.

Travelling to neighbouring countries

If travelling from Jordan to neighbouring countries, ensure that you obtain your visas before departing Canada. These countries don’t normally issue visas at border crossings to individuals without a Jordanian residency permit.

If you’re travelling beyond Jordan, note that other countries have denied Canadians entry because their passports bore a Jordanian border stamp issued by an office bordering Israel. Such a stamp would indicate that the traveller had entered Jordan from Israel.

Routine vaccines

Be sure that your  routine vaccinations , as per your province or territory , are up-to-date before travelling, regardless of your destination.

Some of these vaccinations include measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, varicella (chickenpox), influenza and others.

Pre-travel vaccines and medications

You may be at risk for preventable diseases while travelling in this destination. Talk to a travel health professional about which medications or vaccines may be right for you, based on your destination and itinerary. 

Yellow fever   is a disease caused by a flavivirus from the bite of an infected mosquito.

Travellers get vaccinated either because it is required to enter a country or because it is recommended for their protection.

• There is no risk of yellow fever in this country.

There is a risk of hepatitis A in this destination. It is a disease of the liver. People can get hepatitis A if they ingest contaminated food or water, eat foods prepared by an infectious person, or if they have close physical contact (such as oral-anal sex) with an infectious person, although casual contact among people does not spread the virus.

Practise  safe food and water precautions and wash your hands often. Vaccination is recommended for all travellers to areas where hepatitis A is present.

Measles is a highly contagious viral disease. It can spread quickly from person to person by direct contact and through droplets in the air.

Anyone who is not protected against measles is at risk of being infected with it when travelling internationally.

Regardless of where you are going, talk to a health care professional before travelling to make sure you are fully protected against measles.

  Hepatitis B is a risk in every destination. It is a viral liver disease that is easily transmitted from one person to another through exposure to blood and body fluids containing the hepatitis B virus.  Travellers who may be exposed to blood or other bodily fluids (e.g., through sexual contact, medical treatment, sharing needles, tattooing, acupuncture or occupational exposure) are at higher risk of getting hepatitis B.

Hepatitis B vaccination is recommended for all travellers. Prevent hepatitis B infection by practicing safe sex, only using new and sterile drug equipment, and only getting tattoos and piercings in settings that follow public health regulations and standards.

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious viral disease. It can spread from person to person by direct contact and through droplets in the air.

It is recommended that all eligible travellers complete a COVID-19 vaccine series along with any additional recommended doses in Canada before travelling. Evidence shows that vaccines are very effective at preventing severe illness, hospitalization and death from COVID-19. While vaccination provides better protection against serious illness, you may still be at risk of infection from the virus that causes COVID-19. Anyone who has not completed a vaccine series is at increased risk of being infected with the virus that causes COVID-19 and is at greater risk for severe disease when travelling internationally.

Before travelling, verify your destination’s COVID-19 vaccination entry/exit requirements. Regardless of where you are going, talk to a health care professional before travelling to make sure you are adequately protected against COVID-19.

 The best way to protect yourself from seasonal influenza (flu) is to get vaccinated every year. Get the flu shot at least 2 weeks before travelling.  

 The flu occurs worldwide. 

•  In the Northern Hemisphere, the flu season usually runs from November to   April.
•  In the Southern Hemisphere, the flu season usually runs between April and   October.
•  In the tropics, there is flu activity year round. 

The flu vaccine available in one hemisphere may only offer partial protection against the flu in the other hemisphere.

The flu virus spreads from person to person when they cough or sneeze or by touching objects and surfaces that have been contaminated with the virus. Clean your hands often and wear a mask if you have a fever or respiratory symptoms.

In this destination, rabies is carried by dogs and some wildlife, including bats. Rabies is a deadly disease that spreads to humans primarily through bites or scratches from an infected animal. While travelling, take precautions , including keeping your distance from animals (including free-roaming dogs), and closely supervising children.

If you are bitten or scratched by an animal while travelling, immediately wash the wound with soap and clean water and see a health care professional. Rabies treatment is often available in this destination. 

Before travel, discuss rabies vaccination with a health care professional. It may be recommended for travellers who are at high risk of exposure (e.g., occupational risk such as veterinarians and wildlife workers, children, adventure travellers and spelunkers, and others in close contact with animals). 

Safe food and water precautions

Many illnesses can be caused by eating food or drinking beverages contaminated by bacteria, parasites, toxins, or viruses, or by swimming or bathing in contaminated water.

• Avoid getting water into your eyes, mouth or nose when swimming or participating in activities in freshwater (streams, canals, lakes), particularly after flooding or heavy rain. Water may look clean but could still be polluted or contaminated.
• Avoid inhaling or swallowing water while bathing, showering, or swimming in pools or hot tubs. 

Travellers' diarrhea is the most common illness affecting travellers. It is spread from eating or drinking contaminated food or water.

Risk of developing travellers' diarrhea increases when travelling in regions with poor standards of hygiene and sanitation. Practise safe food and water precautions.

The most important treatment for travellers' diarrhea is rehydration (drinking lots of fluids). Carry oral rehydration salts when travelling.

Typhoid   is a bacterial infection spread by contaminated food or water. Risk is higher among children, travellers going to rural areas, travellers visiting friends and relatives or those travelling for a long period of time.

Travellers visiting regions with a risk of typhoid, especially those exposed to places with poor sanitation, should speak to a health care professional about vaccination.  

Insect bite prevention

Many diseases are spread by the bites of infected insects such as mosquitoes, ticks, fleas or flies. When travelling to areas where infected insects may be present:

• Use insect repellent (bug spray) on exposed skin
• Cover up with light-coloured, loose clothes made of tightly woven materials such as nylon or polyester
• Minimize exposure to insects
• Use mosquito netting when sleeping outdoors or in buildings that are not fully enclosed

Animal precautions

Some infections, such as rabies and influenza, can be shared between humans and animals. Certain types of activities may increase your chance of contact with animals, such as travelling in rural or forested areas, camping, hiking, and visiting wet markets (places where live animals are slaughtered and sold) or caves.

Travellers are cautioned to avoid contact with animals, including dogs, livestock (pigs, cows), monkeys, snakes, rodents, birds, and bats, and to avoid eating undercooked wild game.

Closely supervise children, as they are more likely to come in contact with animals.

Cases of locally-acquired   Middle East respiratory syndrome  (MERS) have been reported in this country.

MERS is a viral respiratory disease caused by the Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV).

Some people infected with MERS-CoV experience no symptoms, while others may experience mild flu-like or more severe pneumonia-like symptoms. About one-third of reported cases have result ed in death.

Eat and drink safely ,   and   avoid close contact with animals, especially camels. If you must visit a farm or market, make sure you practise good hygiene and  wash your hands  before and after contact with animals.

There is currently no licensed vaccine to protect against MERS.

Person-to-person infections

Stay home if you’re sick and practise proper cough and sneeze etiquette , which includes coughing or sneezing into a tissue or the bend of your arm, not your hand. Reduce your risk of colds, the flu and other illnesses by:

•   washing your hands often
• avoiding or limiting the amount of time spent in closed spaces, crowded places, or at large-scale events (concerts, sporting events, rallies)
• avoiding close physical contact with people who may be showing symptoms of illness 

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) , HIV , and mpox are spread through blood and bodily fluids; use condoms, practise safe sex, and limit your number of sexual partners. Check with your local public health authority pre-travel to determine your eligibility for mpox vaccine.  

Medical services and facilities

Modern medical care is available in Amman but could be inadequate elsewhere. Procedures often require immediate cash payment.

Medical evacuation can be very expensive. You may need it in case of serious illness or injury.

Make sure you get travel insurance that includes coverage for medical evacuation and hospital stays.

Penalties for possession, use or trafficking of illegal drugs are severe. Even possession or use of small amounts of illegal drugs is a criminal offence. If you're accused of a drug offence, you can be detained by authorities for up to 2 weeks without being charged. Convicted offenders can expect heavy jail sentences and fines.

Consumption of alcohol outside approved venues is illegal. It could result in your arrest, heavy fines or imprisonment. Public intoxication is a criminal offence, whether or not consumption occurred privately

Drugs, alcohol and travel

Illegal activities

Other illegal activities include:

• insulting King Abdullah II or other members of Jordan's royal family
• photographing government buildings and military installations
• all forms of religious proselytizing, including distribution of religious materials
• extra-marital sexual relations
• prostitution
• possession of pornographic material

By law, all vehicles must carry a fire extinguisher and warning triangle.

If a pedestrian is injured in an accident, authorities always deem the driver to be guilty. As the driver, you may face imprisonment and heavy fines.

Drinking and driving

If a police officer suspects you of drinking and driving, they could confiscate your driver's licence on the spot. If you're convicted, you can expect heavy fines and possible imprisonment.

International driving permit

You should carry an international driving permit. You may only drive rental cars with a valid Canadian driver's licence or an international driving permit. To drive any other vehicle, you must hold a Jordanian driver's licence.

Although the laws of Jordan don't prohibit sexual acts between individuals of the same sex, homosexuality is not socially tolerated. Jordan does not recognize same-sex marriages.

Members of the 2SLGBTQI+ community could face arrest under other charges, such as anti-adultery or public indecency laws.

2SLGBTQI+ travellers should carefully consider the risks of travelling to Jordan.

Dress and behaviour

Jordan's customs, laws and regulations adhere closely to Islamic practices and beliefs. Dress conservatively, behave discreetly and respect religious and social traditions to avoid offending local sensitivities.

Before travelling to Jordan, and in case of a family dispute involving children, both parents should ensure they're fully aware of the implications of local laws on children's mobility, access and custody.

Any adult male may prevent his minor children from leaving Jordan by placing a hold on their travel with Jordanian authorities.

Immigration officials may prevent children travelling with their mothers from departing Jordan without the father's consent. This is possible even if the child or woman is solely a Canadian citizen. Jordanian authorities consider disputes surrounding travel holds as private family matters. The Embassy of Canada is limited in its ability to intervene. Only a court or the person who requested the travel hold may remove it.

Under Jordanian law, a husband may place a travel hold on his wife, preventing her departure from Jordan. Adult male relatives (that is uncles, brothers, grandfathers) may also request that a court place a travel hold on unmarried adult female relatives.

International Child Abduction

The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction is an international treaty. It can help parents with the return of children who have been removed to or retained in certain countries in violation of custody rights. It does not apply between Canada and Jordan.

If your child was wrongfully taken to, or is being held in Jordan by an abducting parent:

• act as quickly as you can
• consult a lawyer in Canada and in Jordan to explore all the legal options for the return of your child
• report the situation to the nearest Canadian government office abroad or to the Vulnerable Children’s Consular Unit at Global Affairs Canada by calling the Emergency Watch and Response Centre.

If your child was removed from a country other than Canada, consult a lawyer to determine if The Hague Convention applies.

Be aware that Canadian consular officials cannot interfere in private legal matters or in another country’s judicial affairs.

Legal process

Jordan's legal process may be slow and cumbersome. Police may hold suspects and witnesses to incidents for lengthy periods without access to legal counsel or consular officials.

The currency in Jordan is the dinar (JOD). ATMs are available in larger cities and at the Queen Alia International Airport, but are limited elsewhere. Only U.S. dollars and euros are easily convertible into local currency.

Larger stores and restaurants in Amman and other tourist areas accept credit cards.

Jordan is located in an active seismic zone. Strong aftershocks may occur up to one week after the initial earthquake. Landslides are possible in certain areas. 

Droughts and sand and dust storms occur.

Snowfall is infrequent but can cause extensive road closures and disrupt public services.

Rainy season

The rainy season usually extends from November to March.

Heavy rain can result in flash floods in dry river beds and canyons (or “wadis”). Flash floods and landslides can hamper overland travel and reduce the provision of essential services. Roads may become impassable and bridges damaged.

All receipts for payment of Machine-Readable Visa (MRV) fees issued before October 1, 2022, expired September 30, 2023. There will be no extensions of fee validity. Applicants must have scheduled an appointment or submitted an interview waiver application before September 30, 2023 to avoid paying a new fee. If you paid the MRV fee on or after October 1, 2022, you must have scheduled the appointment within one year of your MRV payment date. Please note that the interview itself does not need to take place within one year, but an interview appointment needs to be made in the system, even if it is scheduled months into the future. Furthermore, applicants using MRV fees paid before October 1, 2022 to book an appointment are cautioned not to attempt to change their appointment dates on or after October 1, 2023. FIRST ON FOX : The House Judiciary Committee is pushing the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for documents related to a slew of illegal immigrants accused of serious crimes within the United States – accusing Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas of an "unacceptable" failure to comply with requests. 

Chairman Jim Jordan has written to Secretary Mayorkas renewing requests for the production of documents, including the "A-Files" or alien files and other immigration documents. Some of the requests date back as far back as October but have not yet been fulfilled.

"The Committee previously wrote to [DHS] for various documents and information, including the production of alien files (A-files) and related immigration case information for several alleged criminal illegal aliens," the lawmakers, who also include subcommittee chairs Tom McClintock and Ben Cline, said. "However, to date, DHS has failed to comply with the Committee’s requests."

Among those requested include Diego Ibarra , a Venezuelan national and brother of the man accused of murdering 22-year-old Georgia nursing student Laken Riley. Ibarra had Tren de Aragua-affiliated tattoos, but he was released and placed briefly into Alternatives to Detention monitoring. He also has been connected to other crimes, including driving under the influence and shoplifting.

Other documents include those for Daniel Hernandez Martinez , who is accused of attacking strangers and two police officers in New York City within months of arriving in the U.S.

The lawmakers also want documents of Pierre Lucard Emile , a Haitian illegal immigrant who was charged with raping a developmentally disabled person and was released back onto the streets in Boston despite an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainer lodged against him. He had been released into the U.S. with a notice to appear after being encountered at the border in December 2022.

Others on the list include a Venezuelan arrested in Virginia for the assault of a 14-year-old girl and who had been released in September, an illegal immigrant charged with stabbing his neighbor and his brother, a Colombian found to be a positive match on the terror watchlist and a Haitian national arrested in connection with an assault on a 15-year-old girl.

They have also requested the files of a group of Venezuelans accused of assaulting two New York police officers near Times Square. Jordan says the production deadline for the request lapsed two months ago.

"DHS’s failure to provide the Committee with the requested documents is unacceptable and prevents the Committee from fulfilling its constitutional oversight obligations," Jordan said, warning that the committee may result to "compulsory process" if the requests are not met.

It is one of a number of document requests from the committee. In February, Jordan subpoenaed documents related to a surge of migrants in Eagle Pass, Texas , in September and the removal of concertina wire.

DHS has rejected claims that it has failed to comply with congressional requests. A DHS official says it has provided over 75 witnesses in more than 50 hearings, 20 personnel participating in transcribed interviews and more than 28,000 pages of documents in response to lawmakers' letters. It has also responded to over 1,400 congressional letters.

"These requests are incredibly time consuming," a DHS official told Fox on Monday. "A Files can be thousands of pages long and must typically be redacted for a wide range of information including Law Enforcement Sensitive information that could jeopardize ongoing investigations, private information about junior DHS employees, and attorney client information."

The southern city is expected to be the target of an Israeli ground offensive - although the IDF has reportedly decided to delay this for now. 

The commander of Hezbollah's coastal sector has been killed in an Israeli strike, the IDF has said. 

It said one of its aircraft "struck and eliminated" Ismail Yusaf Baz in the Ain Ebel area of Lebanon. 

The commander had served as a senior official in several positions in Hezbollah's military wing.

He had also planned rocket and anti-tank missile launches toward Israel from Lebanon's coastal area, the IDF said. 

Shortly before the strike, Hezbollah said it attacked Israel's Iron Dome air defence units in the area of Beit Hillel, claiming they scored direct hits and had killed or wounded their crew members.

An estimated 10,000 women have been killed in Gaza since Israel's offensive on the Palestinian enclave began, a UN report has said. 

"Six months into the war, 10,000 Palestinian women in Gaza have been killed, among them an estimated 6,000 mothers, leaving 19,000 children orphaned," the UN Women report said. 

Susanne Mikhail, regional director of UN Women in the Arab States, said those who survive the bombings are suffering from "daily starvation, sickness and constant fear". 

"The war in Gaza is no doubt a war on women, who are paying a heavy price for a war not of their making," she added. 

The report also found one child is injured or dies every 10 minutes in Gaza.

The IDF has said it tries to reduce harm to civilians in Gaza. 

The seven-year-old girl severely injured during Iran's attack on Israel over the weekend remains in an extremely serious condition, a doctor in the hospital where she is being treated has said. 

Amina Hassouna was injured by shrapnel from an intercepted ballistic missile. 

She is being treated at the Soroka Medical Centre and is on artificial ventilation, paediatric intensive care director Dr Isaac Lazar told The Times Of Israel. 

"The interdisciplinary team of intensive care specialists, anaesthesiologists, neurosurgeons and others continues to care for her around the clock," Mr Lazar said.

"We all hope that her condition will quickly improve and that she will soon be healthy and able to return home with her family."

Israeli tanks have moved back into areas of northern Gaza they left weeks ago, residents have told Reuters.

People who had returned to the area of Beit Hanoun, once home to 60,000 people, fled once more as the raid began, they said.

One resident told Reuters that tanks surrounded schools and houses and ordered families to evacuate before detaining "many men".

In the south, warplanes conducted air strikes on Rafah, where hundreds of thousands of people are taking refuge, killing four people and wounding several others, medics and residents said.

The Israeli military said its forces continued to operate in central Gaza and that they had killed several gunmen who attempted to attack them. 

"Furthermore, over the past day, IDF fighter jets and aircraft destroyed a missile launcher along with dozens of terrorist infrastructure, terror tunnels, and military compounds where armed Hamas terrorists were located," it added.

Israel's military said it was one of the 120 fired by Iran on Saturday.

Vladimir Putin has told the president of Iran he hoped all parties in the Middle East would show restraint and not allow further confrontation, according to Russian state media.

In a phone call with Ebrahim Raisi, Mr Putin discussed in detail the suspected Israeli attack on the Iranian consulate in Syria on 1 April, reported RIA Novosti, citing the Kremlin.

Mr Raisi said Iran's retaliatory missile and drone attack against Israel on Saturday was "forced and limited" and emphasised he had no interest in further escalation, the report said.

Russia and Iran are close allies, with the latter an avowed enemy of the US and a supplier of military hardware for Moscow's war in Ukraine. 

The phone call comes amid fears that any further military escalation between Israel and Iran - especially any involving the US - could draw Russia into a wider conflict.

Early this morning we reported that while the West strongly condemned Iran's attack on Israel, China took a different approach.

Foreign minister Wang Yi told his Iranian counterpart that China appreciated Iran's emphasis on not targeting regional and neighbouring countries, and that Beijing believed Iran could "handle the situation well and spare the region further turmoil".

Now reports suggest Israel is disappointed with China's response to Saturday's attack, when Iran launched more than 300 missiles and drones.

"We were hoping for stronger condemnation and clear acknowledgment of Israel’s right to defend itself," said Yuval Waks, the deputy chief of the Israeli mission in China, according to the The South China Morning Post.

"Unfortunately, we did not see that, which is why we were unhappy with the statement," he said.

He said Israel was aware of the "good bilateral relations" between China and Iran, but Israel needed to express its "grave concerns to the Chinese regarding Iran's negative role in our region and its support of terror groups".

The Israeli government is split between those who want to hit Iran hard and those who do not want to waste the international community's support, says military analyst Michael Clarke.

The Israeli foreign minister has already been on the diplomatic offensive, urging 32 nations to enact sanctions against Iran. 

Clarke said the external world was leaning on Israel "very hard", attempting to leverage the amount of help Israel received from allies in defending against Iran's attack, and the number of ballistic missiles that malfunctioned, to urge Israel to exercise restraint.

"What the external world is saying to Israel is 'look, you were lucky, and you had our help, now don't spoil it by being so aggressive that we think twice about giving you that help again and you might not be so lucky the second time'", said Clarke.

Medical Exam Instructions

All immigrant visa applicants, regardless of age, require a medical examination prior to the issuance of a visa. Only a physician accredited by the U.S. Embassy can perform this exam. It is your responsibility to schedule and attend a medical exam with one of the doctors listed below before your visa interview at the U.S. Embassy. Medical examination results from other physicians will not be accepted.

Items to bring to your medical examination

The doctor will need the following items to complete the medical exam forms:

• Your visa interview appointment letter,
• Your passport,
• Two (2) recently taken passport-sized color photographs, and
• A copy of your immunization records,

Any medical exam fees, including x-ray and blood test fees, must be paid directly to the examining physician.

During the medical exam

The medical examination will include a medical history review, physical examination, and chest X-ray, gonorrhea test, and blood test (for applicants 15 years of age or older). The United States also requires tuberculosis (TB) testing for all applicants two years of age and older. Please be prepared to discuss your medical history, medications you are taking, and current treatments you are undergoing. U.S. immigration law requires immigrant visa applicants to obtain certain vaccinations prior to the issuance of a visa. Current immigrant vaccination requirements are available on CDC's website . You can also read about our medical examination requirements on Travel.State.Gov .

Schedule of Costs for Immigrant Medical Services

The following schedule of costs represents the maximum amount that authorized physicians may charge for a given service. These prices are subject to change only with the approval of the embassy. If you believe that a panel physician has charged you more than the maximum authorized amount, please inform the embassy immediately at [email protected] .

After the medical exam

When your examination is completed, the doctor will provide you with exam results in a sealed envelope. DO NOT OPEN THIS ENVELOPE. Please include the medical exam in your complete document package which you must submit to the Embassy in advance of your appointment. Please refer to the pre-interview checklist below for a complete list of required documents and submission instructions.

Any x-rays taken will be given to you. You DO NOT need to bring the x-rays to your visa interview unless you suffer from tuberculosis (TB). However, you must carry the x-rays with you when you travel to the United States for the first time.

Pre-Interview Checklist

Please use the list below to determine the items that every applicant must bring to the immigrant visa interview:

• A copy of your NVC interview letter (does not apply to Diversity Visa, fiancé(e), adoptive, or asylee/refugee applicants).
• Unexpired passport valid for six (6) months beyond your intended date of entry to the United States and  a photocopy of the biographic page (where your name and photo are located).
• Two (2) color passport-size photographs of each person applying for a visa (5 cm x 5 cm, or 2 inch x 2 inch).  Please review our online photo requirements .
• Confirmation page from the Form DS-260 Application for an Immigrant Visa you submitted online at ceac.state.gov/iv .
• Your original  birth certificate, English translation,  and  a photocopy.
• Your medical examination results in a sealed envelope .
• Original or certified copies of birth certificates for all children of the principal applicant (even if he or she is not accompanying) .
• The original police certificate from your country of current residence and countries of previous residence.  Please note, a certificate is required for all applicants: 1. Older than 16 years; 2. Who have not obtained a new police certificate within the past year; and 3. Who have lived in a country for one year or more where police certificates are available.  To determine if a certificate is available from a country you have lived in, please check: https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/us-visas/Visa-Reciprocity-and-Civil-Documents-by-Country.html

Applicants who fall into any category listed in italics below should bring these additional documents:

For family based applications:

• The appropriate  Form I-864 Affidavit of Support  for  each  financial sponsor along with a photocopy of the sponsor’s most recent IRS transcript or most recent U.S. federal income tax return, form 1040, and any relevant W-2s or 1099s. If the petitioner does not file taxes or have proof of income to provide, submit a signed statement from the petitioner regarding the lack of income or tax filing.   Note:  If the financial sponsor filed taxes jointly a Form I-864A and W-2 will be required from that individual.
• Proof of your U.S. petitioner’s status and domicile in the United States. If the petitioner is a lawful permanent resident, bring photocopies of the passport pages showing the petitioner’s most recent exit/entry stamps for the U.S., as well as a photocopy of the Permanent Resident Card. If the petitioner is a U.S. citizen, bring a photocopy of the petitioner’s U.S. passport or naturalization certificate.
• Evidence of the relationship between the petitioner and beneficiary. (Evidence varies by visa type. If the petitioner is a parent, child, or sibling, bring an original birth certificate with a translation and a photocopy to verify this relationship. For marriage-based or fiancée visas please bring photographs, letters, or emails.)

If you are married :  Your  original  marriage certificate, English translation,  and  a photocopy.

If you were previously married:   Your  original  divorce or spouse’s death certificate, English translation,  and  a photocopy. Visas for fiancés, spouses, or step-children require divorce or death certificates for previous spouses of both the petitioner and the beneficiary.

For employment-based visa applications:  Letter from your U.S. employer dated less than one month ago.

If you have ever been convicted of a crime:  Court and criminal records, English translation, and a photocopy.

If you have served in any country’s military:  Military records, English translation,  and a photocopy.

If you are adopted:   Adoption papers or custody documents, English translation,  and  a photocopy.

If you are the petitioner’s stepchild:   The  original  marriage certificate of the petitioner and your biological parent, English translation,  and  a photocopy along with divorce records for any previous marriages of either parent.

If your visa class requires you to be unmarried:   An original Civil Status Certificate issued within one month of the interview date is required.   (This applies to: a child of a U.S. citizen or LPR; an unmarried son/daughter of a U.S. citizen or LPR; or a derivative child over the age of 18 who is included on any immigrant visa petition)

Interview Guidelines

Sending documents to the U.S. Embassy in Amman

Immigrant visa applicants must submit the required documents in advance of their interview dates.  Failing to provide a complete document package in advance will delay visa processing. If you do not provide a complete document package in advance of your interview, your interview may be cancelled and you may be asked to schedule a different interview date online. Please visit the U.S. Embassy’s Visa webpages for more detailed information.

Jordanians, residents of Jordan, and applicants already in Jordan:  One to two weeks before your interview, you must send your complete document package with Aramex or drop it off at the U.S. Embassy between 11:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. any day that the Embassy is open. These hours are for document drop-off only; we will not be able to assist with cases or answer questions during this time. You should submit all documents no more than two weeks before your interview and no later than one week before your interview.

Non-residents of Jordan and applicants traveling to Jordan for interview:  You should arrive in Jordan five days before your interview and conduct your medical exam. Three business days before your interview, you must drop off your complete document package at the U.S. Embassy between 11:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m.

Rescheduling or cancelling your interview

If you are unable to attend or have missed your scheduled interview, please reschedule your interview at www.ustraveldocs.com. There may be a significant wait before the next available interview, so please attempt to attend the date already assigned. For some family-based and employment preference visa categories, a visa became available within the month you have been scheduled by NVC. DV applicants should be aware that visas are numerically limited and must be issued by September 30 of the program year. There is no guarantee that a visa will still be available on the date of your rescheduled interview. Please carefully consult the Visa Bulletin before you decide to reschedule your interview. 

Please note: You can only reschedule after your assigned interview date.

Security screening procedures

All visitors to the U.S. Embassy in Amman must follow certain security procedures.  Any visitor who declines to be screened by U.S. Embassy security personnel will be unable to enter the Embassy.  To avoid delaying your entry and that of those in line behind you, please bring only what is required for your interview.  If you leave items in your car, be sure to put them in the trunk and lock your car; do not leave any personal items in view in the passenger compartment.

Persons entering the Consular Section will not be able to bring any electronic or battery-operated devices (including, but not limited to, mobile phones, laptops, digital watches, cameras, and portable music players).  Security personnel will not store any electronic devices.  You must make arrangements to store these devices elsewhere before coming to the Embassy.  Any customer carrying electronic devices will be asked to reschedule their appointment.

Accompanying Persons

The following persons may accompany a visa applicant to their interview:

• Interpreter:  Applicants may bring ONE interpreter if they do not speak English or Arabic well enough to participate in an interview.
• Special Needs Visitors:  Applicants may bring ONE person to help if they are elderly, disabled, or a minor child.

Attorneys are not  permitted to accompany clients into the waiting room or to their interview.

Immigrant Visa Fees

If you have not paid all required fees to either the National Visa Center or via the interview appointment website, please be prepared to pay these fees on the day of your interview.

All fees may be paid in either U.S. dollars or the Jordanian dollar equivalent. We accept cash and credit cards only. Please note that if you are found ineligible to receive a visa, the application fee cannot be refunded . You can find a complete list of fees on our  Fees for Visa Services webpage .

Do Not make Travel Plans Outside of Jordan

If your visa is approved, we will keep your passport at the Embassy while we prepare your immigration packet and print a visa for your passport. We will return your passport to you later via courier services only. If you have to travel within Jordan while your passport is still with us, please make sure you have a valid picture ID other than your passport.

A Note to Applicants Regardng the Child Status Protection Act

If a child reaches the age of 21 after his/her application has been submitted, their status as a “child” for immigration purposes may be protected under the Child Status Protection Act (CSPA) if they satisfy certain conditions.  In order to determine if your child may benefit from CSPA and remain eligible for a visa after reaching the age of 21, he/she must satisfy three key requirements:

1. The applicant must be unmarried.

2. The applicant has been determined to be qualified for a visa under CSPA despite turning 21 years old while the visa has been in process.***

3. The child must seek to acquire the visa within one year of visa availability (i.e. when NVC provides notification that the visa is available).  Actions that constitute “seeking to acquire” include: paying the Immigrant Visa Application Processing Fee for the child or completing a form DS-260 application in the child’s name.  (Please note:  Action taken on a child’s case before the visa became available or more than one year after the visa became available will render the child ineligible for a visa under CSPA.)

*** The CSPA determination is made using a calculation that considers the applicant’s age, the date the application was submitted, and the pending period of the petition (the period between the date the petition was filed and the date the petition was approved by United States Citizenship and Immigration Services).   NVC can conduct this calculation on a provisional basis for applicants to gauge the likelihood of CSPA eligibility, but final confirmation of eligibility under CSPA occurs at the interview.

After Your Visa Interview

A consular officer can make a decision on a visa application only after reviewing the formal application and interviewing the applicant. There is no guarantee that you will receive a visa. Do not sell your house, car or property, resign from your job or make non-refundable flight or other travel arrangements until you have received your immigrant visa. 

If More Information Is Needed

Sometimes a consular officer is unable to make a decision on a visa application because he/she needs to review additional documents or the case requires further administrative processing. When additional documents are requested, the consular officer will give you a refusal letter that asks you to submit additional documents. The letter will include instructions on how to send those documents to the Embassy.

Administrative processing takes additional time after the interview. Most administrative processing is resolved within 60 days. However, the timing varies based on the circumstances of each case. Before inquiring about the status of administrative processing, please wait at least 60 days after your interview. 

What Happens After Visa Approval?

Passport, Visa, and Sealed Immigrant Packet – We will place your immigrant visa on a page in your passport. Please review your visa to make sure there are no spelling errors. We will also give you a sealed envelope containing documents that you must give to U.S. immigration authorities when you arrive in the United States for the first time.  Do not open this envelope. You must carry it with you; do not put it in your checked luggage. If you receive X-rays during your medical examination, carry those with you and give them to the U.S. immigration authorities.

USCIS Immigrant Fee – All individuals who are issued Immigrant Visas overseas must pay an Immigrant Fee to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) prior to traveling to the United States. This fee is for processing your residency status and printing your Permanent Resident Card. Only adopted children entering the United States under the Hague Process, returning residents, and people traveling on a K visa are exempt from this fee.

When You Should Travel – You must enter the United States before the expiration date on your visa, which is usually six months from the date of printing. Your visa cannot be extended and all fees are nonrefundable. The principal applicant must enter before or at the same time as other family members with visas. Children who turn 21 years old after visa issuance must enter the United States before they turn 21 years old; otherwise they will lose their immigrant status.

Getting a Green Card – Your Form I-551 Permanent Resident Card, also known as a green card, will be automatically mailed to the address in the United States that you write in your visa application form. This is a very important document that proves you have permission to reside in the United States. Do not travel outside of the United States until you receive your Permanent Resident Card. Once your card is issued, you should not stay outside of the United States for more than one year. If you do, you will lose your status as a Lawful Permanent Resident.

Children’s Issues – Children are required to have certain vaccinations before they can enroll in school in the United States. Therefore, we recommend that you bring your child’s complete vaccination records with you to the United States. Additionally, if your child is adopted, you have full custody as a result of a divorce, or you share custody with the child’s other parent, we recommend that you bring a copy of all applicable adoption or custodial papers from the authoritative court in your home country. You will likely need these papers (translated into English) in the United States for issues such as school enrollment, medical care, and eventual citizenship.

Diversity Visa Applicants - Additional Information

If you are interviewing for a Diversity Visa (DV), all of the above instructions apply to you. Please schedule and attend a medical examination prior to your visa interview; gather the required documents; Jordanians, residents of Jordan, and applicants already in Jordan, please send a complete document package with Aramex or drop it off at the U.S. Embassy between 11 a.m. and 12 p.m. 1-2 weeks before your interview any day that the Embassy is open.

Below are additional instructions that apply only to DV applicants. 

Bring to your interview

In addition to the documents listed on the Pre-Interview Checklist in this package, DV applicants should also bring the following items to your visa interview:

• Appointment information printed from the “Entrant Status Check” on the E-DV website
• Documents showing that you have either a qualifying high school education OR have two years of qualifying work experience in the last five (5) years immediately prior to application (for the principal applicant only; more information is available on our  Diversity Visa Process webpage ).
• Payment in cash of the $330 Diversity Visa Application Fee.

Review your DV Lottery entry

Prior to your visa interview, we recommend that you review the data on your initial E-DV entry. On your initial E-DV application, you must have correctly entered your marital status. If you are legally married you must have listed your spouse, even if you are currently separated from him/her (unless your spouse is a U.S. citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident).

Additionally, you must have listed ALL of your living children who are unmarried and under 21 years old. This includes your natural children, your spouse’s children, or children you have formally adopted in accordance with the laws of your country.

Failure to have listed an existing spouse or children at the time of your entry in the Diversity Visa lottery will result in the denial of your visa and visas for your family. Any fees paid to the U.S. government in support of your visa application(s) are nonrefundable. If you failed to include a child who had already been born, or a spouse to whom you were married when you entered the lottery, you should not proceed with the visa application. Special Information for Syrian Applicants

Some visa applicants traveling from Syria have encountered difficulties arriving in Amman for their immigrant visa interviews.  The U.S. Embassy in Amman is liaising with the Jordanian authorities and Royal Jordanian Airlines to facilitate the entry of immigrant visa applicants arriving from Beirut by air.  While we cannot guarantee entry into Jordan, we can inform the Jordanian authorities that Syrian immigrant visa (IV) applicants will be entering Jordan via Queen Alia International Airport (QAIA) on a specific date for an IV interview.  At this time we cannot assist visa applicants attempting to enter Jordan by land through border crossings.

Syrian IV applicants with scheduled interviews at the U.S. Embassy in Amman should email their flight itinerary to the National Visa Center (NVC) at [email protected] as instructed by NVC.  Currently, the only Royal Jordanian flights from Beirut are RJ 402, RJ 404, RJ 406 and RJ 408.  We cannot guarantee coordination on other airlines or codeshares. 

Many visa applicants have encountered difficulties making it to their interviews when they have not coordinated with us in advance or attempted to fly with other airlines, use other airports, or cross by land.  We cannot facilitate entry to Jordan for reasons other than a scheduled immigrant visa interview.

If any of the following occur, please send us an email at [email protected] that explains your situation so that we can address your concerns:

• Lebanese or Jordanian authorities have denied your entry into Lebanon or Jordan
• Royal Jordanian has refused to allow you to board the aircraft

If you would like to have your interview at another Embassy or Consulate, you may request that your case is transferred to that location.  Please contact that Embassy or Consulate directly with your request.  

Important reminders for Syrian applicants:

• Medical exams must be conducted in Jordan.
• The Individual Civil Record and police record must have been issued within the last six months.
• Ensure that full names or national identification numbers are present for all individuals listed on documents from the Civil Status Registry.
• Bring the original birth certificates and family records being used to establish the relationship to the family member petitioning for your immigration.  Remember to also provide these for the other family members applying for immigration.
