But we have definitely found that having the right cat travel gear can make all the difference when it comes to helping your furry explorers feel safe & comfortable. 

In fact, it’s one of our top tips when asked how to get a cat used to traveling. 

So we’ve decided to create a cat travel equipment list for new adventure kitties, recommending all the top items you’ll need for flying, driving or hiking your way around the globe with your fur-friend by your side. 

These items can help train your cat to travel like a pro & make your life as a pet parent 100x easier.

We’ll be sharing our personal favorite options for these below, covering all the top travel gear for cats, plus a few top tips along the way. To set you and your feline friend up for a calm & enjoyable trip!

But first – how do we pick our travel favorites? Paul, Yoda & I have a certain criteria that we like to stick to:

• Cat-centric – We choose products that are made specifically for cats, with their wellbeing in mind. We choose items that are geared towards their safety & happiness, allowing them to fulfill natural urges in healthy ways. 
• Eco-friendly – We always try to find the most sustainable options we can, with Earth’s health in mind. While no one is ever perfect, our choices can make a difference – so we reflect this in our suggestions. 
• Accessible – We all love to spoil our pets, but that can mean something different to each of us. So we include a range of options at different price tags, to include all cat lovers in our community. 

1. Cat Carriers 

While you may not think you need a carrier if you are heading off in your RV, even when you aren’t traveling by plane a cat carrier can come in real handy. You never know when you might need to visit the vets, or need to contain your cat for some other reason. 

This is why I like super sturdy yet lightweight options. Bonus points if they fold down too!

2. Travel dishes 

For travel dishes, you want something light, easily packable & sturdy enough to keep up with your adventures! 

If you are hiking or out on the road, a collapsible bowl will be your best way to go. I like the Simple SLSON Collapsing Bowl , again because it’s lightweight, really durable (so it will last) & super easy to clean. Plus it’s got a handy clip, so if you want it easily accessible or can’t squeeze it in anywhere, you’re covered! 

If you’re in a campervan or RV, you might want a more permanent solution that’s still travel friendly. For this I’d recommend a light, non-slip bowl. This option from Beco is cool because its low rim is whisker friendly, and it’s made from durable & sustainable bamboo. Grippy rubber pads secure the bowl from below too.

3. Water Carrier

Having fresh water on hand is always important when traveling, especially on longer trips. So a good pet water bottle is top of my list for cat car travel accessories.

7. Leash & Harness

When it comes to travel, we are always on the hunt for the next best cat harness so Yoda can join along on our local exploration. We look for harnesses that are safe but easy to slip on, durable, non-bulky & comfy but always stylish! 🙂

8. Travel Friendly Toys

Keeping cats entertained is just as important when you are on the road. Especially if you are in a confined space for a short, or longer period of time. 

It’s great to bring a few of your kitty’s favorites with you , as this can help them feel more at home wherever you are. But pick wisely – it’s probably best to leave anything hefty behind and just take your smaller toys.

Compared to cats not using their litter trays and clawing the furniture, crying over spilled water seems trivial. Nevertheless, it’s exceedingly frustrating when you’re frequently mopping up spills and replenishing your cat’s water.

Luckily,  this is a problem that comes with an easy fix ; simply replace your regular water bowl with an anti-spill cat bowl! However, as with all products, there are both incredible and terrible options out there. While some untippable water dishes do a fantastic job, others are a waste of money.

Having a playful cat myself who thinks splashing around in her water bowl is a great idea, I made it my mission to find the best spill-proof cat water bowl that actually works. Before I go through my favorite non-spill water bowls for cats, I just wanted to highlight exactly what I was looking for in my ideal product. Here are all the features that the best untippable and splashproof cat water bowl should have.

• Weighted: The top quality of a no-spill pet water bowl is that it is weighted. Weighted cat bowls make it near impossible for your cat to tip over by themselves, so the heavier, the better! Your cat also won’t be able to push a heavy bowl around the room as easily.
• Non-Slip: Bowls with special non-slip material on the bottom also helps to keep the bowl in one place and prevent spills from being pushed around the room. Usually, rubber or silicone bases work well for this.
• Shape: The shape of the bowl also helps to reduce spillages. Some have a wider base which makes it harder for your cat to tip over, and others have a lip over the top to protect against splashes from going all over the floor.
• Easy to Clean: You need to keep your cat’s water bowl clean so that no bad bacteria or mold starts to grown, so opting for a design that is simple to clean is a must. For this reason, bowls that are dishwasher safe are preferable.
• Material: When it came to material, the dish has to be durable to ensure the product would last, and BPA-free so that is safe for cats to drink from. Stainless steel or ceramic are two of the best options, but durable plastic also works okay for a water bowl.

With all these factors taken into consideration, here are the best spill-proof water bowls available today.

1. Modern Artisans Heavy-Weight Splash-Free Water Bowl (Best All-Rounder)

Firstly, this is a weighted water bowl for cats  weighing in at 2lbs . This is much too heavy for cats to tip over by themselves, no matter how hard they try! The reason the bowl is so heavy is that it is made from solid stoneware clay. This is an effective solution if your cat frequently tips their water bowl over.

As the bowl is made from clay, it is also extremely long-lasting. You may be worried about chipping a clay bowl, but the water dish has also been  covered in a chip-resistant glaze,  making it survive the wear and tear of everyday life, as well as being scratch-resistant. Plus, it is lead-free, calcium-free, and food-safe.

What I love most about this bowl is that the clay has been crafted into a smart shape with an inverted curved lip. So long as you don’t fill the water level up to beyond the interior rim, if your cat does splash around with their paws, the water will simply hit the lip and fall back into the bowl!

The only downside of this product is that it is hard to thoroughly clean the underside of the lip. Nevertheless, there are three draining holes to help water escape the rim, and the bowl is dishwasher safe, making cleaning more convenient; simply put the bowl in to wash along with your other dishes.

This bowl is pretty lightweight and so, in theory, can still be tipped over. However, because of the intelligent lip design, the lighter weight doesn’t make a difference. The lip is large and makes it difficult for cats to hook their paws underneath and tip the bowl over.

I also love the lip as it is incredible at protecting against splashes, so if your cat likes to dip their paws in the water as mine does, this could be your ideal product. Because of this design, it is also amazing for car journeys or when traveling. You can set the bowl in the car and know that there will be minimal spillages regardless of how windy or bumpy the roads are.

This spill-proof cat water bowl is also easy to clean as the lid comes off, meaning you can wash inside just like any other bowl. It is also dishwasher-safe for added convenience.

It is non-slip, so your cats won’t be able to drag the bowls around the room with their paws, and as they sit snuggly inside the silicone base, they are untippable. Both the bowls and the mat are made from high-quality material; the bowls are made from  stainless steel and the base from high-grade silicone. In addition, they are BPA-free and food-safe, so you can rest assured knowing it is safe for your cat to eat from these dishes; plus, they’re long-lasting.

When it comes to cleaning, you can pop out the bowls from the base and wash all three parts separately, either in the sink or the dishwasher, due to them being 100% dishwasher safe.

I think the only downside to these bowls is that the silicone could be thicker to make the base more sturdy. I’ve found that if your cat manages to spill a lot of water that accumulates in the base, it doesn’t take much effort for them to step on the silicone lip and create a small puddle on the floor.

This untippable cat water bowl is great if you have a cat that likes to drag its bowl around your kitchen, leaving a trail of water behind them. The bowl has a  non-slip rubber seal on the base , making it difficult for your cat to push around.

Due to the rubber seal, you’ll also find this product successful if you have a cat that tips over its entire water bowl. Besides, the shape of the bowl makes flipping it more challenging, as it is wide and flat at the base and curved on the inside. This makes it harder for your cat to hook its paw and cause a mess!

Unfortunately, if you have a cat like mine that likes to splash in the water and create ripples with its paws, I’ve found that this bowl won’t cut it. There is no splash-proof lip nor any silicone base or protection for the floor.

Anyone considering this option will also be pleased to know that the bowl itself is made from stainless steel. This material is designed to last and will not rust. It is also scratch-resistant, meaning no harmful bacteria will be able to grow in deep grooves, and it’s easy to clean.

A raised design such as this elevates the bowl so that  your cat doesn’t need to bend down to drink  in it. This is ideal for cats that splash the water in their bowls, as elevating the dish will discourage splashing.

What’s more, this raised water bowl also makes drinking more comfortable for cats and helps to reduce the chance of vomiting. Furthermore, older cats will benefit from an elevated bowl; you will probably see their water intake increase as it may hurt them to continually bend down for a drink.

Aside from the height, this product is also a heavy water bowl for cats, weighing in at 1.2lbs. Therefore, this bowl also helps to prevent your cat from tipping its water dish over or dragging it around the room.

These weighted cat water bowls are more high-end than my previous recommendations and are made of premium porcelain. While easy to clean, this material is also 100% safe and more hygienic than plastic due to its scratch-resistant properties. Porcelain can easily smash if dropped, though, which is the product’s only downfall.

6. Comsmart Cat Water Fountain (Best No-Spill Cat Water Fountain)

Often, cats splash in their bowls to see ripples in the water’s surface and get the water moving, helping them feel more comfortable drinking from a still pool of water. By purchasing a cat fountain or water dispenser, you may find that this splashing behavior disappears altogether. Plus, with this fountain, the water does not pool in the tray and instead flows through the holes directly back into the basin, further avoiding spillages.

This specific cat water fountain is fantastic; it has a water level window so you know when it is time to refill, an ultra-quiet pump so you can hardly hear it working, and three different flow settings so that you can find one that your cat likes. It also has a capacity of 2.4L!

In terms of material, the bowl part of the fountain is made from  stainless steel , which is safer compared to plastic fountains. The water also has a triple filtration system ensuring it stays fresh for your cat, and the pet fountain is BPA-free.

I found the only downside of a water fountain over a bowl is that they are more difficult to clean. With this cat water fountain, you must clean the bowl and inside the pump once per week and purchase replacement filters when necessary.

The floating cover goes over the top of the water bowl and lowers as the water level decreases. This means  your cat cannot possibly get her paws in all the water  and can only drink the small pool at the top. This new way of drinking can take a little while for cats to learn. However, it won’t be long before your cat does know how to use this bowl; you just need a little patience.

I love that this product is easy to take apart and clean, and the setup is intuitive. It’s also great for cats with whisker fatigue as the bowl is wide and flat, plus the water levels are easier to see than in a regular cat water bowl.

The only downside is the size. This is intended for cats and dogs and holds 1l of water, so it is a fair bit larger than a regular water bowl. Therefore, small cats and kittens may struggle to drink from it, especially when the water level is low. On the other hand, the larger capacity makes it great for a multi-cat household where your kitties will all be sharing.

This water dispenser holds up to 2.5l of water and is  extremely heavy  when full. It will not be possible for your cat to knock over the dispenser, thus reducing mess. However, I found that cats can still splash the water using their paws, so it isn’t a great solution for this issue.

Water dispensers are an excellent option for busy owners, though. It will take your cat several days to drink this amount of water, so you won’t have to remember to refill your cat’s water bowl as regularly, and you’ll have more time back in your day.

What I love specifically about this water dispenser is the clear bucket enabling you to conveniently see the water levels and the large, wide drinking tray, which helps with whisker fatigue. Moreover, it is made from food-grade ABS material, is super easy to disassemble and clean, and means your cats will always have fresh water.

The stand then further secures the bowl to prevent your cat from spilling water all over the floor while raising the bowl slightly so it is more comfortable for your cat to drink from.

Ceramic is also a great material in terms of hygiene and cleanliness. It does not get scratched easily like plastic and is less likely to harbor any harmful bacteria. You can even pop this bowl straight in your dishwasher. Plus, with its straightforward design, there is no need to clean multiple parts.

Of course, the downside of ceramic is that it does break easily if dropped from a height. So, if you’re clumsy like me, maybe give ceramic bowls a miss! It is also quite a deep bowl measuring 2.6” high. This is great as it can contain a lot of water without it spilling over the edges but can cause whisker fatigue.

I think the main selling point of this product is that it is wall mounted. Because the holder mounts to the wall, it is impossible for your cat to tip the bowls over. They also cannot nudge them around the room as they drink, splashing water onto the floor. Moreover, the shelf can be installed in an elevated position which makes it more challenging for your cat to paw at the water as well.

In terms of aesthetics, I love this product. The pet bowl shelf is made from  natural solid wood  with black metal anchors. Plus, there is a second shelf included which acts as the ideal spot to store your cat’s food or treats.

The bowls are super easy to clean as well. Simply pop them out of the holder and wash them as usual. They can also go in the dishwater! The  stainless-steel material  cleans easily, doesn’t hold onto nasty smells or odors, and is much more durable and long-lasting than plastic alternatives.

The main downside of these spill-proof cat water bowls is that they need to be wall-mounted. This is great as you can position them at precisely the right height for your cat. However, it means they’re not portable and could be a pain to change the height as your cat grows. They’re also not a great option for rented apartments.

Although I think these are some great products, the best non-spill water bowl for you may be totally different. This is because we each have different things that are important to us and different reasons why our cats are making a mess.

Therefore, I have written this buying guide so that if you do decide to shop elsewhere, you can find an amazing product. Here are my tips for finding an incredible anti-spill cat water bowl that works.

Shop Within Your Budget

Cat water bowls come at a range of different prices. Therefore, before you even start reading product reviews, set yourself a price range and only look at products that fall within this bracket. You do not have to buy the most expensive bowl for it to be effective. Likewise, some of the cheapest options out there may be all you need!

If purchasing something like a cat water fountain rather than a bowl, you’ll need to consider future costs too. For example, I often forget that these will have filters that need regularly replacing. Plus, there will be the cost of the power needed for the fountain to run, be that electricity or batteries.

Choose The Right Design

What design is right for you will depend on what your cat is doing to make a mess in the first place. Are they splashing their paws in the bowl to create spills as my cat does? Are they pushing the bowl around the room, causing water to spill over the sides? Are they tipping the bowl over completely?

Choosing a water dish whose design is specific to the issue is key. Here are the different types of anti-spill cat water bowls you can buy, and in which situation I think each will be effective:

• Weighted Cat Bowl:  These are heavy bowls that weigh over 1lb and help prevent spills caused by your cat tipping their entire water bowl over or pushing it around the floor. However, they don’t protect against splashes.
• Lipped Design:  To protect your floor from cats that love to splash, bowls with a lip around the top can help prevent the water from getting on the floor. These bowls are also great for travel or long journeys.
• Silicone Base Bowl:  Bowls with a silicone or rubber base are great for cats that drag their bowl and help prevent it from tipping over. They won’t stop your cat from splashing in its bowl, but if you choose a product with a large base, it can effectively catch spills.
• Elevated Bowl:  Elevated cat water bowls are raised above the ground and can help deter cats from splashing as they’re higher up. By opting for a heavy raised bowl with grips on the bottom, you can avoid spills from tipping the water bowl over and dragging it along the floor.
• Water Fountain: Although not technically a bowl, water fountains are a great solution for cats that love to splash. By providing them with flowing water, they’re less likely to splash and cause a mess. If you do opt for a fountain, consider whether you want a  battery-operated cat water fountain or one that plugs into the mains.

Select a Safe & Durable Material

As cats will be drinking from their water bowls, the material the bowl is made from is also important as it needs to be safe. Always look for products that are  BPA-free and food-safe . The best products are made from stainless steel, ceramics, or BPA-free plastics.

Of these three materials, either  stainless steel water fountains  or  ceramic bowls  are preferable. This is because these are both scratch-resistant, whereas plastic could easily get claw marks on its surface which can act as a breeding ground for harmful bacteria. However, this is more important when choosing a food bowl for your cat, as these must withstand more wear and tear. Therefore, plastic water bowls are safe, just watch for scratches and replace the bowl if needed.

The material also needs to be durable so that the product lasts a long time. Thankfully, all three materials are long-lasting. However, ceramic is the most easily breakable as, if dropped, it is prone to smashing. That said, it’s still a fantastic option unless you’re clumsy like me.

A cat water fountain provides fresh filtered water to encourage a cat to drink more water throughout the day, and studies have shown that running water is more appealing to some cats. Dehydration is a common issue among domesticated cats resulting in lethargy, a loss of appetite, and other negative effects. If this sounds like your cat, upgrading their water bowl to a water fountain and feeding more wet food are simple swaps to make that will help your cat consume the hydration they need.

We tested 19 of the top cat water fountains in our New York Lab and in homes with enthusiastic feline volunteers. Each hydration station was scored in multiple categories, including ease of cleaning and design attributes, with at home participants noting when a fountain was difficult to set up or noisy.

Our favorite overall cat water fountain is the  Cepheus 360 Ceramic Pet Fountain , which uses dishwasher-safe ceramic parts for an attractive water bowl with a lot of different ways for your cat to drink from it. But we found several other cat water fountains that may work better for your specific needs.

With accessible streams of water, easy-to-clean ceramic construction, and fun color options, the Cepheus 360 Ceramic Pet Fountain is our top choice.

True to its name, the Cepheus 360 has a round reservoir with a 71-ounce capacity—more than half a gallon—which is fed by three different fountain spouts arranged around a circular top reservoir. The design not only allows for multiple cats to drink from the Cepheus at once, from any angle they can get at it, but also creates a few different ways for your cat to hydrate. Cats can drink from the main bowl, lap water from the spout streams, lean in to drink from the bubbling top reservoir, or lick up the thin layer of water that splashes over a flat second tier.

Setting up the Cepheus is straightforward, but we felt instructions included could be more detailed. The fountain is primarily made of two different pieces, with the ceramic fountain unit inset in the center of the bowl. The fountain's pump is affixed to the bottom with suction cups, then the power cable snakes up and through a passage leading out the bottom of the fountain (an included waterproof cap is used to seal off this exit).

The Cepheus comes with three filters, which are rectangular cartridges stuffed with activated carbon and cotton. On visual inspection, the cartridges are less full of absorbent material than some other cat water fountains we tested, though we were unable to find any detrimental effect on its cleaning capacity or longevity. Cepheus recommends changing the filter once a month, which is comparable to other fountains we tested. We especially appreciated that the filter fits into a bracket that places it directly in front of the water intake on the side of the fountain's pump, which means water is forced through it. In several other filters tested, water merely burbles over a filter layer, creating a less thorough water cycle.

Since the Cepheus seals its pump mechanism under the ceramic fountain piece, it operates remarkably quietly. You mostly only hear the waterfall sound. That ceramic construction has several other advantages too. For one, it makes the Cepheus 360 incredibly stable. It doesn't matter how excited a cat or even a small dog might drink from it, they won't be scooting it around the floor and splashing everywhere. But our favorite ceramic advantage is that it's dishwasher safe.

But there are a few small downsides to the Cepheus 360 Ceramic Pet Fountain. The most obvious is the lack of an AC power cord. Instead, the pump cable ends with a USB plug, so you'll need your own adapter. And with long-term maintenance, there are internal elements that are trickier to clean than the two main ceramic parts.

But reservations aside, we highly recommend the Cepheus 360, and we especially liked that it was available in a bunch of fun colors and patterns. In addition to gray and white models that could fit in with any kitchen decor, there are also two cheerful pattern designs and a gradient "Gradual Purple" version.

The PetSafe Drinkwell Pagoda Ceramic Fountain is remarkably similar in many facets to our overall favorite, the Cepheus 360 . It includes a similar ceramic design, using two separate pieces to house its internal fountain pump. It also has a comparable 70-ounce capacity and comes in four fun colors. What mainly separates the Drinkwell Pagoda from our favorite cat water fountain is a higher price and a rectangular—rather than round—design.

The Drinkwell Pagoda combines dishwasher-safe ceramic components, a smaller top reservoir (which tester cats loved), and a dual-fountain design that enables multiple cats to drink from either end of the fountain. We also like that it comes with a proper power adapter rather than just a USB cord.

There are some minor downsides to the Pagoda Ceramic Fountain, including a complicated internal water pump set-up that is a pain to disassemble and clean. And while the pump motor has a barely discernible hum, the spouts dropped water directly into the bowl from a significant height, making it a little noisier than similar water fountains. Finally, while we love the look of the Drinkwell Pagoda, we should note that the flared-out rim makes it easier to spill water when moving the fountain.

But none of these are dealbreakers, and we found the Pagoda fountain to be as high quality and well-designed as our top pick. If the price difference doesn't deter you, then ultimately the decision between the Cepheus 360 and the Drinkwell Pagoda should come down to your aesthetic preference.

We also tested—and loved!—the  PetSafe Drinkwell Avalon , which is the same as the Pagoda but with a round instead of rectangular design. It's well worth your consideration as well.

The PetSafe Drinkwell 360 Stainless Steel Pet Fountain was our previous Best Overall pick, and it's still one of our favorite pet water fountains. Its main downside is also an advantage for many pet owners—this fountain is gigantic! If you have cats and dogs willing to share a bowl, then this is likely to be your best option.

Similar to our Cepheus, the PetSafe Drinkwell 360 is designed to fill a round reservoir that can be approached from any direction. Unlike the Cepheus, however, the Drinkwell is strictly utilitarian in its design, with plastic clips that distract somewhat from its clean, stainless steel lines.

While it has fewer surface areas for cats to lap water from, the Drinkwell offers extra customizability, with a plastic cap that can be used to adjust the size of the fountain streams. Several swappable caps are included for different configurations, allowing you to customize the number of individual water streams—up to five.

We also like the long power cord.

The setup is a bit tedious and includes the need to connect several small parts in a formation we felt was unintuitive. Still, the instructions were decent, and after 15 minutes, we had the fountain up and running without issue.

The stainless steel design makes it easy to clean in a dishwasher for the most part, but the Drinkwell's primary components, the internal mechanisms are a little more delicate and require handwashing. In addition to replacement filters, PetSafe also sells a fountain cleaning kit with pipe cleaner-style scrubbing brushes.

The Raindrop Fountain resembles a standard (albeit a little oblong) stainless steel pet bowl, except for the curved water slide design, which creates a sluice of water to attract your cat. It has a 60-ounce capacity, or just under two quarts, and operates very quietly.

It's a simple, no-frills fountain at a reasonable price, especially compared to cheaper-feeling plastic models.

The PETLIBRO Capsule Water Fountain has a 71-ounce (2.1-liter) capacity but retains it in a surprisingly compact design.

The filter is especially beefy and did a great job catching the crumbled kibble we sprinkled in the fountain while testing. It was also one of the quieter fountains we tested, behind only the ceramic models that smother the pump noise under heavy housing.

The Capsule is made from BPA-free plastic. It's easy to take apart and reassemble, which makes it easy to clean. Sadly, the fountain is not dishwasher safe, but it does come with its own scrub brush.

It's an attractive design, but could benefit from having a longer power cord (the cord is USB, but a power adapter is included). Another compromise the compact fountain makes is a lack of water flow choices. While other models offer customized streams and the ability to adjust water flow, the Capsule can only be used with the spout or without. The choice is between a stream of water like a water fountain or a low burbling.

The Capsule Water Fountain also shares limitations common to the "flower" style of the cat water fountain ( read more here about the style with our Best Flower choice). Most notable is a top tray that separates the fountain from the water reservoir, which means if the pump stops working or the power goes out, your cat won't have access to most of the water. But unlike flower-style fountains, the Capsule has a broad drinking area that retains about 2.7 ounces of water on top of the dish in a shallow pool.

The Cat Mate Pet Fountain is the cheapest fountain we recommend, but it has more going for it than just a low price. Its design offers a lot of drinking options, with water spread across three different levels, so your cat (or cats!) can pick whichever pool or stream they prefer. And while far from our quietest model, we didn't find the low hum from its pump very noticeable at all.

While the Cat Mate is an excellent fountain that is likely to engage your cats, it's less effective as a filter. In theory, water is supposed to pass through a screen-like filter on its way to the pump intake, which then shoots the water back up to the top pool. But in practice, bits of kibble and other impurities (like fur, slobber, etc.) slipped around the edges of the filter, which is held in a plastic bracket. Or, if a piece of food or other contaminant is heavy enough, it's likely to stay in the main bowl area and not circulate back through the plastic grille.

If you're primarily considering a cat water fountain as a way to entice your cat into drinking more water, the Cat Mate is a great way to try one out. However, if you're more interested in a water fountain that you can fill up and forget for days at a time, you might want to consider our other recommendations because the Cat Mate requires a little attention to keep clean. In our tests, it also demonstrated a smaller practical water capacity than advertised: It's closer to 50 ounces than 70. Luckily, the Cat Mate is easy to disassemble and reassemble, plus its BPA-free plastic is dishwasher safe, so cleaning is easy.

If you've done any research into cat water fountains, you've almost certainly run into the flower design. They all share in common a plastic flower resembling a daisy, which divides the water pumped up from the reservoir beneath, forming multiple streams that tumble into a shallow drinking tray. Beneath the drinking tray is a filter, which the water passes through as it falls back down into the reservoir.

We tested six of the most popular flower designs, including the ubiquitous  plastic Catit Flower Cat Fountain , and mostly found them to be of similar quality. Many even shared identical components. Overall, we weren't too impressed by any of the flower fountains, which were mostly flimsy and have a divider between you and most of the water bowl, making it difficult to tell when they were running low. Plus, if the bowl loses power, your cat won't have access to the water.

It's a design with some compromises, but if you're still interested in a flower fountain, we recommend the Wonder Creature Cat Water Fountain with Stainless Steel Lid.

True to its name, the main difference between the Wonder Creature and other flower fountains is the stainless steel lid, which can be run through the dishwasher and provides the flimsy plastic frame with a more durable feel than similar plastic models. It also had a backlit fill line, which made it easier to tell when the water level was getting low. The Wonder Creature came with a floor mat, three filters, and a scrub brush.

Oddly enough, the Wonder Creature was virtually identical to another model we tested, the  Comsmart Cat Water Fountain , right down to an identical instruction manual. But the Wonder Creature version had a maximum/minimum fill line printed on the front and came with a better scrub brush.

Final Verdict

Our favorite cat water fountain is the  Cepheus 360 Ceramic Pet Fountain , which has enough spouts for a multi-cat household and comes in several attractive designs. It also operates quietly, with an effective filtering system. If you're looking for something a little more compact (and friendlier on the wallet), check out the  PETLIBRO Capsule Water Fountain , which has a clean, contemporary design and is made from BPA-free plastic.

We purchased and tested 19 cat water fountains in our  New York Lab , setting up each and then running them through several tests. Our methodology guided testers through multiple scores while also gathering their subjective impressions along the way.

Beginning with  setup , our testers timed how long it took to assemble and start a cat water fountain. If the directions were confusing or the pieces were hard to fit together, our testers let us know. Testers also evaluated the  design  of each fountain, letting us know which ones they'd want in their own homes or noting when a fountain felt shoddily constructed.

We then evaluated a fountain's  effectiveness , using several tests, such as sprinkling cat food crumbs into a fountain and evaluating how well it did at filtering them out. We also looked for a fountain's  stability , so we could determine whether or not they'd be likely to splash all over your floor or get jostled around in a multi-cat household.

Finally, our testers looked up the price of the fountain they were testing and gave us their impressions of the product's overall  value .

After testing in a lab environment, water fountains were mailed out to at-home testers for further evaluation, which joined a library of insights provided by past tests and reviews. The scores and impressions provided throughout this roundup are a synthesis of our lab-tested ratings and at-home experience with the fountains.

Research indicates that cats have different preferences when it comes to their water sources. Our favorite cat water fountains offer multiple ways to drink water so that your cat will find something to entice them. For example, many cats don't like their whiskers touching the edge of a bowl while drinking and so prefer access to a wide surface area of water. (See our list of top bowls for whisker fatigue here .) Other cats might prefer drinking right from a spout or licking up shallow, flowing water from a smooth surface.

A water fountain with many different options will help you pinpoint your cat's favorite ways to drink, so you can learn how to provide for their hydration.

While many cat water fountains use very similar electric pumps, different design choices can result in a louder or quieter experience. We found ceramic models did the best at insulating the pump, so the fountain's operation can barely be heard. "Flower" style fountain designs operate relatively quietly but get progressively noisier as the water level lowers.

In addition to the pump motor, noise also comes from the trickling of water. While some people find burbling water pleasant, if you suspect to be annoyed by the constant sound, look instead for a model where the water lands on a smooth surface instead of splashing against more water.

Size and Capacity

Cat water fountains can be surprisingly large and often take up much more space than a standard water bowl. It's a good idea to measure the space where you might place the water fountain in advance, so you're not caught by surprise when your new fountain arrives.

Size also matters to a fountain's capacity, which we've noted for all of our recommendations. Many of our favorite fountains hold around 70 ounces of water, which should enable you to leave the fountain for several days without a refill.

But one feature to consider in advance of purchasing a water fountain is what happens to the water when the power is disconnected. For some fountains, the water reservoir is always accessible as a standard water bowl. But some models give your cat access to a "dish" surface, with water constantly flowing over it and back into a lower reservoir. These models may satisfy your cat's hydration but could be less appropriate picks if you're looking for a water fountain for use while away on vacation since your cat will lose access to the water if the power goes out.

The scientific research on whether or not cats will drink more from a water fountain is equivocal, with studies finding that cats drink slightly more from flowing water sources, but not to a statistically significant degree. A 2010 study published in the Journal of Veterinary Behavior found that cats had a strong individual preference for either a fountain or a bowl.

In other words, there doesn't seem to be a definitive answer to whether or not cats prefer drinking from fountains and running water. Instead, your cat has an individual preference. If your cat is reluctant to drink from a bowl, then a fountain might intrigue them.

While cat water fountains have filters that keep the water free of cat saliva, food crumbs, hair, and other contaminants, your fountain will still need regular maintenance. Most manufacturers recommend changing the filter and thoroughly cleaning a fountain once a month.

Cleaning typically involves disassembling the fountain, wiping down all surfaces with soapy water, then rinsing thoroughly. Many models we recommend have dishwasher-safe components as well.

With many models, you will also have to clean the pump periodically since internal propellers and other areas can get clogged with your cat's hair, reducing the flow of water. Pipe cleaners and narrow, stiff scrub brushes are often best for cleaning smaller components.

Cat water fountains don't use a lot of electricity, and are safe to leave running 24/7. Because your pet may very well drink during the night, it's best to leave the fountain plugged in and running overnight. However, be sure that the fountain has enough water to keep the pump submerged, and that the water looks clean. If necessary, add more water to the fountain before going to bed for the night, or discard old water and refill the fountain with fresh, clean water.

Can You Put a Litter Box in a Cat Carrier?

That being said, you may not have to travel with your cat’s litter box in their crate with them. If you’re traveling with your cat for less than 2-4 hours, you may not need a travel litter box at all. Assuming your cat is healthy, they should be able to wait that long before using the litter box.

How To Travel With a Cat Litter Box

If you’re getting ready to travel with your cat over a long distance, you may be traveling with a litter box as well. Here are a few things you can do to make the trip easier:

1. Choose a travel litter box .

The litter box you use at home is likely too big to fit in your car comfortably, so be sure to buy a travel litter box. These are typically much smaller and collapsible for easy travel.

2. Make sure the litter box is secure in the car .

Once you have your travel litter box, secure it in the car for travel. If it will have loose litter in it during the trip, you don’t want it dumped all over the back floorboard.

3. Bring extra litter, bags, and a scoop .

Be sure to bring everything you’ll need for your cat’s trip including extra litter for the travel litter box, plastic bags to clean it out with (we use recycled grocery store bags), and a scoop that can be kept in an easily cleaned space during the trip.

Whether your cat’s litter box is in their carrier or you plan on letting them use it when you stop driving, you’ll want to have everything you’ll need to keep it clean and securely stored during the trip. While I was researching the best cat carriers with litter boxes, I did the same things I would do before making a purchase for my own cats. I read customer reviews, I looked at the manufacturer, retailer, and price of the cat carrier, and above all, I considered the comfort and safety of the cat and the driver.

Here are the main factors I considered while choosing the best cat carriers with litter box sets:

• Customer Satisfaction.  Before I make any purchase, I always take the time to read customer reviews and consider the overall product rating. For each cat carrier litter box combo on this list, I checked to make sure that customer reviews are overall positive and that each one had an average rating of at least 4/5 stars. That helped me to understand how accurate the cat carrier description was as well as the reliability of the seller.

If you are lucky enough to live with a cat, you are most likely aware of their desire for routine with as few surprises as possible. Cats are generally attached to their home environment, where they feel safe and secure. However, it may be necessary to travel with your cat, and there are many things you can do to ensure that it is as pleasant as possible for both of you. Preparation is definitely the key!

Make Sure You Have the Correct Cat Carrier

There are many types of cat carriers available , but an ideal carrier has a front and top opening to give you and your cat options for entry and exit.

It is also nice to be able to remove the top of a hard-sided carrier for a couple of reasons:

It offers a less stressful way to remove your cat from the carrier (do not “dump” your cat out of the front opening).

You can place a cozy blanket in the bottom of the carrier and place the carrier in a quiet spot in your home with the top off.

Allow your cat to check out the carrier before you travel; this can make going into the carrier just another part of your cat’s normal routine.

Get a carrier large enough for your cat to stand up and turn around in. If your cat is a larger breed, such as a Maine Coon, you may need to use a carrier designed for dogs to ensure that it’s big enough. Many cats also like having a blanket draped over the carrier to block out stress-inducing visual stimuli when traveling.

Cat Carrier Travel by Car

If you are traveling by car, try to make sure that the carrier is level in the vehicle, as this will feel more secure to your cat. It is also a good idea to buckle the carrier in the car with a seat belt if possible. Some carriers come with small dishes for food and water. If your trip is going to be several hours long, it is a good idea to offer small amounts of food and water in the carrier.

Cat Carrier Travel by Airplane

If you and your cat are traveling by airplane, a soft carrier with a waterproof bottom is preferred, but more than one entry and exit option should still be available.

You will be required to remove your cat from the carrier to go through TSA security screening, so be sure to have your cat wear a harness that you can attach a leash to, so you can safely hold your cat during this time. Airports can be loud, scary places, and you wouldn’t want your cat to get startled and run off.

 The carrier should not be larger than a typical carry-on bag—17.5 x 12 x 7.5 inches in some cases. Check with your airline for other requirements before you travel.

Chat With Your Veterinarian About Anxious Cats

If you know or suspect that your cat will be anxious during travel, schedule an appointment with your veterinarian well in advance of your trip to discuss options for preventing and treating anxiety. If your cat does not seem anxious, you can still get your veterinarian’s input on whether they recommend a medication or supplement. Your veterinarian will consider your cat’s age, demeanor, and overall health when making such recommendations.

What to look for in an airline cat carrier

Cat carriers come in many different styles at varying price points. To ensure you get the best value for safety and comfort, our experts recommend considering the following factors when shopping.

Safety: Unlike child car seats, there are no universal safety standards or inspections for cat carriers. However, some brands go the extra mile by subjecting their carriers to rigorous testing by reputable third-party or nonprofit safety organizations. Among our recommended picks, the Sleepypod Air and Diggs Passenger Travel Carrier have been crash-test certified by the Center for Pet Safety (CPS), a nonprofit consumer advocacy organization that studies the safety of pet products. 

Currently, CPS studies do not extend to air travel and flight safety. Despite the absence of standardized air travel safety tests, crash-test certification remains the gold standard. As Lindsey Wolko, founder and CEO of CPS, points out, you'll want to consider your entire journey, including driving from your home to the airport and transportation at your destination. 

Wolko says carriers are most susceptible to failure at seams where the mesh connects to the carrier body. She recommends inspecting carriers for any signs of loose threads, weak spots, or faulty zippers to ensure their overall safety and reliability throughout transit.

Size: A carrier should be roomy enough for your cat to comfortably turn around and lie down while still being compact enough to fit under the seat in front of you. Carrier size requirements vary by airline, so double-check your airline's specific requirements.   

Fortunately, size isn't usually a limiting factor for cats. More often than not, they prefer to curl up in a small ball and hide during the trip, says Dr. Jo Myers , a veterinarian with Vetster. She says extra room for playing, eating, drinking, or using the litter box during the flight is typically unnecessary. However, if you anticipate a long layover and want extra legroom for your cat, an expandable carrier like Mr. Peanut's Gold Series Expandable Carrier is a good choice.

"Even if you cover the carrier with a towel, it's far from airtight," she says. "Simply check on your cat occasionally, without disturbing them any more than necessary."

How we tested airline-approved pet carriers

We developed our selection and testing criteria for this guide to the best airline-approved cat carriers with advice from our experts. The 24 carriers we evaluated underwent the tests described here.

Feature comparison: After conducting interviews with our experts, we created a point rubric for scoring each carrier based on the following features:

• Shape and design

Scrape test: We scraped a mesh section of each carrier 50 times with a fork to test its durability, noting any damage or discoloration. 

Zip test: To test the durability of each carrier's zippers, we completely zipped and unzipped one of its loading entrances 50 times. In the process, we observed changes in the zipper's ability to smoothly run its course.

Luggage test: If a carrier included a luggage strap, we evaluated how well it remained balanced on top of a suitcase. We placed a 10-pound weight inside and attached the carrier to a suitcase handle so it rested on top of our luggage. Then we rolled it over a curb, up a ramp, and along the sidewalk and street of a city block. 

Ventilation test: According to Wolko, ventilation is important to prevent a cat from overheating during travel. We measured the dimensions of each carrier's mesh panels and calculated the percentage of the total surface area they comprised. We favored bags with more ventilation. According to IATA live animal regulations, pet carrier bags must have a minimum of 16% ventilation. 

Walk test: We took each soft-sided carrier containing a 10-pound weight on a 15-minute walk around a neighborhood. Each was carried using the shoulder strap and held at the front of the body the way a person would if they had a real cat inside. For the last block of the walk, we switched to using the hand-carry straps. The backpack carriers were taken on the same walk but were not carried by hand. With each one, we paid attention to how comfortable it was to carry, how much it bounced, and whether it collapsed inwards.

Goop test: We devised this test to determine how easy it would be to clean the carriers if a cat vomited or defecated in transit. We mashed together cat kibble, canned food, and water with a mortar and pestle to make the goop, then spread a tablespoon on an exterior wall and interior mat of each carrier. After 48 hours, we wiped the goop from the exterior using dish soap and water and cleaned the mats in the washing machine. 

Drop and stomp tests: We brought the carriers to a local park, loaded each one with a 10-pound weight, and threw them off of a 10-foot play structure, looking for any damage that occurred upon landing. We then rolled the bags several times on the ground with the weight still inside, looking for damage to the stitching, mesh, or zippers. Later, at home, we placed each carrier on a rug and stomped on it a dozen times with bare feet, noting whether its frame changed shape or the bag suffered any other damage.

What is considered an airline-approved pet carrier.

To fly with a cat in the cabin of a plane, you'll need a soft-sided carrier that fits within the allowable dimensions of the airline, which vary a little from airline to airline. Regardless of the carrier you use, Wolko says to make sure your cat has enough room to stand up, turn around, and lie down comfortably. Additionally, there should be at least 2 to 3 inches of clearance from the top of their ears to the interior roof of the carrier.

How much does it cost to fly with a cat? 

Fees for flying with a pet in the cabin of a plane vary between carriers. At United Airlines , a one-way flight for your cat adds $125 to your ticket price. At Delta , there is a $95 fee for domestic flights. Flying a cat in the cargo hold on a domestic flight is typically about $300 per trip. Sending a cat on an international flight can cost up to triple that amount.

How much ventilation should a carrier have? 

For soft-sided carriers, Wolko says mesh ventilation should be on at least three sides of the bag. In cargo, airlines require that a kennel is ventilated on all four sides. According to the IATA live animal regulations, both soft- and hard-sided pet carriers must have a minimum of 16% ventilation. 

Do cats need to go to the bathroom on a flight? 

Unless a cat has a medical condition, they will be fine without access to a litter box for the duration of a flight. "Just based on the physiology of cats, they could probably go from Boston to Hawaii without needing to void," says Dr. Bob Murtaugh , a veterinarian and chair of veterinary medicine for the National Academies of Practice.

In the cargo hold, kennels cannot be outfitted with a litter box or anything other than an absorbent liner and a soft bed or blanket. "If the travel day will be more than eight hours, during a layover pet owners can arrange a comfort stop for cats to be let out of their carrier," says Elaine Mathis, pet travel specialist and project manager at Happy Tails Travel . When you let your cat out of their carrier, you'll want to make sure your cat is safely secured with one of the best cat harnesses attached to a leash.

Do cats need food and water on a flight? 

On shorter in-cabin flights, it's unlikely your cat will require food or water. However, if you're flying your cat in cargo, Mathis says a food bowl and water bowl should be in the carrier regardless of the flight length. She recommends using dishes that fasten to the crate's door and can be refilled easily from the outside, such as Lixit's Quick Lock Crock 10-ounce bowls .

What are the signs that my cat may be in distress in flight?

According to Murtaugh, a few obvious signs may indicate your cat is in distress during a flight, either due to fear or excessive heat. A cat that is panting, restless, and vocalizing could be experiencing significant anxiety or overheating. If the membranes in their gums turn bright red, the latter is most likely, and it's important to cool them off quickly. If a flight attendant approves, placing the carrier on your lap so they can feel the air blowing from the vent above your seat or wiping them down with a wet cloth may help lower their body temperature. Before your travel, Nilson recommends lightly spraying the carrier with calming pheromones. 

In the weeks before their trip, introduce your cat to their carrier or kennel in a positive way. "Make the carrier feel like a cave or a home or something that's comfortable, something that they're not just jammed into the first time they're on their way to the airport," says Murtaugh.

Place the carrier in an area of the home where your cat spends a lot of time and encourage them to explore it by placing catnip and treats inside or by playing with them in and around the space. 

Murtaugh says that taking your cat on a car ride or other forms of transportation while in their carrier may also be helpful in the weeks before the flight. He recommends placing a bed or blanket that smells like home inside the carrier and using a pheromone spray or collar to help take the edge off. 

If your cat has a history of experiencing debilitating stress during travel and will be flying in the cabin, you can speak to your vet about prescribing an anxiety-relieving medication. However, it's important to test medication out before your flight. "Make sure there won't be any untoward side effects," says Murtaugh. "Your vet can help you tailor that to your cat's needs."

The IATA recommends against sedating a cat before flying in the cargo hold. It can be fatal for older, chronically sick, or highly stressed animals. Nilson says calming pheromones such as Feliway or Pet Remedy are safe alternatives.

How Much Does It Cost to Ship a Cat?

Whether you plan on moving abroad or domestically in the US, you probably wonder how much you should budget for your cat's part of the move. It's important to keep in mind that there are many pieces to moving a cat that determines the costs.

Even if you choose not to hire a professional service to organize a safe move plan for your cat, the individual expenses can add up to a hefty price tag. To help give you a better idea of what to expect with the costs of your cat's move, we've put together some items to remember when budgeting for your travels.

Expenses for Domestic and International Cat Shipping

Is your pet traveling in-cabin or in the cargo hold? Either way, you must purchase a kennel that meets the airlines' requirements. We have some tips and tricks for finding the right kennel for your cat for cargo travel on this page .

Research the costs of travel crates beforehand, and don't forget to purchase two water bowls to attach to the door!

Example Estimate: A medium PetMate Sky Kennel, what most airlines consider to be the best size for cats traveling in cargo, can cost anywhere between $50 USD and $200 USD.

The amount you'll need to spend at the veterinarian depends significantly on where you travel. If you are flying across the country, a simple health check and general vaccinations will be all you need. However, some destinations will require blood tests, like a Titer test , a veterinarian must perform that with USDA accreditation. Titer tests and other possibly required blood work can cost hundreds of dollars. Read the pet import requirements for your destination and discuss the process, including the related costs, with your vet.

Example Estimate: Vet costs will vary greatly. We've seen a simple health certificate for domestic travel range from $75 to $200. However, the more complicated the import requirements and the more pets you have, expect the costs to rise. We have seen international health certificates and required vaccinations come up to $1,200 for one pet for destinations like Singapore . 

Airline Ticket and Fees

Additionally, you must consider how the costs will be affected if your cat's routing requires a layover. Layovers for pets that last more than a few hours can add additional fees, which ensure they are well looked after at an animal lounge until they are put on the next flight. While you may be able to jump on a discount flight to your destination without worrying about routing or stops, pets have to be carefully routed to ensure they're only flying in and out of airports that have pet-friendly airlines.

Lastly, it is important to note that some airlines will not allow you to book directly with them to fly your cat internationally to some countries. Instead, you'll be required to hire a pet-shipping company with an airline account. This is because they want assurance that the import procedures and paperwork were completed correctly to avoid penalties or fees.

Example Estimate:  The cost of flying your cat as manifest cargo will depend greatly on the destination. The cost of flying one small cat domestically as manifest cargo will likely range between $275 to $300. However, the further the destination, the more the rate will increase. For example, flying a typical house cat to Australia may be closer to $1,000. 

Other Transport Services

Ground transportation .

If you're moving with your pet within the continental United States, ground transportation may need to be an option you consider. Due to COVID-19, there are not as many airlines accepting pets as there previously were. 

Example Estimate: The cost of ground transportation when needed will vary based on the length of the journey.  PetRelocation's ground transportation rates start at $2200 - $2400 for a 10-hour drive and increase to around $6000 - $6400 for a cross-country journey.

Pet Taxi 

Considering that your cat's travels may not align with your travel plans, looking into hiring services to transport your cat to and from the airport may be a good idea. Hiring a professional pet taxi or driver with a climate-controlled vehicle may not be as inexpensive as you consider the time spent on the drive, the distances traveled, fuel costs and traffic.

Also, if you plan on having someone check in your cat at the airport, it may take a few hours to ensure that all of the paperwork is in order and that your cat is weighed and prepped for departure.

Example Estimate: Animal transportation costs vary based on the city, distance from the airport, number of pets, and time of day the travel takes place. The transport of one cat in a major US city (like New York) during regular business hours to an airport within 10 miles of your home may cost you up to $275 USD.

Additional International Expenses

Government approvals or endorsements.

Depending on where you are moving, you may need to take your cat's veterinary paperwork to get government approval or endorsement before travel. Some countries even require multiple endorsements, such as Consular and USDA.

Again, knowing the rules for importing a cat to your destination is important.

Example Estimate: USDA endorsement fees can be found on their website here  . If your cat does not require blood tests, your endorsement fee may be as low as $38. However, if your destination country requires blood tests, the cost will be raised to $121, along with additional fees for each pet. Keep in mind that this does not include the time spent to book and attend an in-person appointment or the cost of mailing in paperwork to be endorsed.

Import Permits

Some countries will only allow pets to enter with an import permit. As you can imagine, getting formal approval from the government to bring your pet overseas can often come at quite a price.

If your destination requires an import permit, try looking for these fees on that country's government website.

Example Estimate: The fees for obtaining an import permit for a pet going to Australia can be found on the DAFF website here . For just one cat, the import permit fees will cost $480 AUD.

Customs Clearance

Once your cat arrives, clearance steps need to be taken. These can include brokers, taxes, tariffs, and other country-specific fees that need to be paid for your cat to be released to you.

Most airlines will gladly share any of these customs fees with you when you book your cat's flight. If that's not the case, check your destination country's government website to see if any customs fees are indicated there.

Example Estimate: New Zealand’s governing body over pet imports, MPI, lists their border clearance charges on their website here . Depending on the country your cat is traveling from, this fee can range anywhere between $28.19 NZD (fixed) to $186.30 NZD (hourly).

If you're moving to a country requiring a quarantine period, like New Zealand, Singapore, or Malaysia, you must consider the fees required to keep your pet at the quarantine facility. Remember that these facilities offer more than just accommodations for your pet. They provide food, outdoor time or walks, and medical care if needed.

Example Estimate: The quarantine fees for pets moving to Singapore can be found on the AVA website here . In short, it will cost at least $242 SGD (roughly $200 USD) for a cat to stay in quarantine for 10 days (the typical minimum period for pets).

DIY vs. Hiring Professionals

While some people choose to handle their pet moves independently, many owners eventually decide to have a service organize it all. Managing the costs and logistics of a pet move can be complicated and stressful, so hiring an all-in-one service relieves most. Hiring a pet shipping professional to arrange your pet's move is more expensive, but since the pet pros will be managing your cat's move, you have one less thing to worry about!

How much does it cost to Fly a Cat Internationally?

The costs associated with moving overseas with cats .

Moving overseas can be such an exciting time; whether you are moving to Australia to paddleboard in pristine oceans or headed to England to spend your weekends exploring historic towns. It can also be quite stressful, and we know how much organizing and planning that comes along with it!

It becomes even more complicated if you have a furry friend or two that you need to bring with you. There are many moving pieces and different costs involved when it comes to flying a cat internationally . It can be very overwhelming when trying to research, especially as the costs and regulations can vary significantly between countries. Whilst it is difficult to generalize anything regarding pet travel , we hope this cost breakdown can provide you with a bit of insight into the type of things you may have to consider when moving overseas with cats.

Please note that each destination and your own unique travel circumstances and needs will vary significantly from one person to the next. This should simply give you a general idea of some of the most common costs involved when flying a cat internationally.

Travel Crates

Whether your cat is flying in-cabin with you or in the cargo hold you will need to purchase a travel crate . The travel crate must meet certain airline, industry and government regulations and it is important to note that many travel crates available online do not meet these ever-changing regulations. 

We have a handy Crate Calculator you can use to see exactly what size crate you will need to get for your cat. Essentially, your cat must be able to turn around and be able to stand without their ears touching the top of the crate.

Always consult an expert before purchasing a crate online, as your cat may be denied travel if you show up to the airport with a non-approved travel crate (even if it is the right size).

Pet Express Travel Crates

The travel crates we supply are all approved by the airlines and IATA. We can also send you the crate as early as possible so that you can start getting your cat used to their travel crate. This will make the journey far more comfortable for them and will ease some of your stress as well!

Example cost:

The price of an N200 travel crate, which is the standard size for a small cat, is approximately $120 USD.

Transportation

International flights.

The international flight will end up being a large portion of the overall costs. This is because airlines charge additional fees for live animals due to the extra care and attention they must place on handling and looking after the pets. Tickets can be even more expensive than your own passenger tickets.

The cost of the flight will depend largely on your cats’ crate size. The cost of the flight can also depend on the destination as some countries will have less incoming flight options than others.

IMPORTANT: Please note that some airlines will not allow you to book flights directly with them and will require you to book through an IPATA certified Pet Transport Company. This is because the airlines understand how complicated the process is. Small mistakes in paperwork or veterinary procedures can cost passengers large sums of money and delays for months.

A direct flight from LA to Melbourne can cost between $1,200 – $1,600 USD (dependant on the size of the crate).

Other Transportation

Depending on where you are currently located in the US, you may need to transport your cat to a city where the international flight will depart from. You may need to arrange a domestic flight within the US or if your cat is a snub-nosed breed , ground transportation will be the only option. If you need to transport your cat on the road you will need a temperature-controlled vehicle with plenty of space to secure a travel crate in.

It is also important to keep in mind that most airlines will have embargoes on domestic flights during certain times of the year when they deem it too hot or too cold for your pet to fly. In summer, sometimes the only option is to fly your cat early in the morning or very late at night due to the heat.

Example Cost:

A domestic flight in the US for a small cat to travel in cargo can cost between $300 USD – $600 USD.

Boarding & Comfort Stop Fees

Your pets’ travel plans may not exactly align with yours and sometimes it is necessary for your cat to travel on separate flights and even board overnight at a pet transit lounge.

As well, if your cat’s flight has a layover it may be necessary to organize a comfort stop between flights. A comfort stop allows your cat to get out of the travel crate, stretch their legs, have a toilet break and be given some love and attention before the next leg of the journey. These comfort stops can be organized by the airline or you can utilize the services of a Pet Shipper in the local area.

Boarding at Pet Express:

When you arrange your pet’s travel with Pet Express , we provide your cat with a complimentary night of boarding the evening before the international flight. We have pet transit lounges in both Los Angeles and San Francisco. We will also provide you with daily pet updates and photos whilst your furbaby is in our care.

Airlines can charge up to $500 USD for a comfort stop, depending on how long the layover is. 

Veterinary Visits

Depending on the destination, your cat may need to have a couple of veterinary visits to ensure your pet’s health meets the import requirements. The types of veterinary treatments that may be required include rabies vaccinations, blood tests, health certificates, and general health check-ups. For international trips, there is the added requirement of the vet needing to be USDA accredited (i.e. government-approved).

It is important to note that the timing of these vet visits to your departure date is critical, and again, each country will have its own set of regulations around this. This is the most difficult part of organizing pet travel and requires knowledge of both veterinary procedures and different countries’ import regulations.

Example cost: costs can vary greatly depending on your vet. For example, a general health exam for your cat can cost between $70 USD – $250 USD.

Government Expenses

Import permit.

Some countries require your pet to have obtained a pre-approved Import Permit before arrival. These permits can be quite costly, and applications can usually be lodged online.

For example, for arrival in Australia, you will need to apply for an Import Permit from the Department of Agriculture and Water Resources. This will set you back about $480 for the first pet and $240 for each additional pet.

Some countries, such as Australia and Malaysia, require pets to be placed into quarantine upon arrival for varying lengths of stay. The quarantine will need to be booked ahead of time and can also be very costly.

For example, pets will be required to board at the Quarantine facility in Melbourne upon arrival into Australia for a minimum 10-day period. Fees are outlined on the Department of Agriculture website and will vary, however, you can expect to pay approximately $2,000 for one cat. There can be additional fees if your pet requires veterinary treatments or an extended stay.

USDA Endorsements

Prior to departure from the US, certain documents will need to be endorsed by the USDA. You will need to make an appointment and either take the paperwork to a USDA office or mail the paperwork in. 

Fees for USDA endorsements can be found on their website and can range from $38 USD to $173 USD. This of course does not include the costs of attending the appointment, of filing or of mailing in the application.

It is also important to note that the USDA endorsement can only be completed the day before the flight, so if you are completing this step yourself you will need to pay additional fees for priority posting to wherever your pet is flying out of as they will need this paperwork attached to their crate to board their flight.

Clearing Customs

Upon arrival into the country, your pet will need to clear customs, just as you would if you were arriving at an international airport. The various charges for clearing customs can include brokers, taxes and tariffs fees. Most countries will also give your pets a veterinary exam upon arrival.

Example costs:

For example, upon arrival in the UK the expected entry fee should be minimum £450 which includes the ARC and VAT fees if entering England.

PLEASE NOTE: The above-mentioned fees are always subject to change (and do frequently) and do not include the costs of applying for the permits, lodging the applications and other administrative fees. For accuracy and assurance, we always recommend looking at country-specific government websites whilst doing your research.

Using a Pet Shipping Company VS. doing it on your own

Call us biased but we cannot recommend highly enough going through an IPATA certified Pet Shipping company. You may not have a choice in some cases as many airlines and even veterinary practices will not allow you to book their services without going through an agent.

However, if you do decide to tackle it on your own, I would recommend doing thorough research on the government import regulations of your destination country, relevant airline and industry regulations as well as the necessary veterinary requirements.
