The 8 best hotel booking apps every traveler should download

Lori Zaino

We all wish we had plenty of time to research and book the perfect hotel , but that's not always the case.

Fortunately, mobile apps can be a quick and convenient way to research and reserve your next hotel stay, especially when you're constantly on the move. If your travel plans have been disrupted or you need a last-minute room, hotel apps can really save the day. You might even get access to exclusive discounts or perks, such as keyless entry or in-app room requests, as well as fast checkout and folio review.

Before you even think about planning your next trip, download some of these hotel booking apps so you can research, book and manage reservations while on the go.

This app allows users to make bookings and view and modify current reservations. You can also use the app to access rewards status and activity (you get one night free for every 10 reservations booked and completed).

Booking reward nights on the website incurs a $5 charge, but this fee won't show up on reward bookings made via the app .

The app also offers a bunch of money-saving features like "Deals for Tonight," which unlocks special savings for last-minute reservations in the area you're searching. Also, be on the lookout for secret prices, shown as "Your Secret Price," on certain hotel listings within the app. These "specially negotiated" rates can save you up to 40% if you use the app, sign up for Hotels.com Rewards or subscribe to the company's emails.

Download for free on iTunes or Google Play .

Marriott Bonvoy

travel app with hotel booking

The Marriott Bonvoy app is relatively straightforward and makes it a breeze to book a last-minute Marriott stay with cash or points. Simply open the app, tap "Book" and start searching. If you've already created a Marriott Bonvoy account , all of your information, including saved payment options, will be there waiting to expedite your booking process.

In the app, it's also easy to modify reservations, check balances, see elite qualifying nights and check for free night certificates. Once you click on an already reserved trip, you can quickly see all the amenities the property offers, as well as recommended activities and excursions.

The app clearly shows available promotions and points expiration dates. If any of your reservations are missing, the "Find a Reservation" feature can help. Mobile check-in allows users to notify the hotel of their arrival time and receive a notification when the room is ready. The mobile key option offers keyless entry (where available).

At many hotels, travelers can even use the app to communicate with the front desk and request services such as late checkout, extra towels or a dental kit.

Download for free on iTunes or Google Play

HotelTonight

travel app with hotel booking

The HotelTonight app has always been a TPG staff favorite, thanks to its ease of use during spontaneous travels. HotelTonight allows you to book great deals at a range of hotels on the same day (or up to 100 days out in some markets). The best savings will usually be found with last-minute bookings where hotels are trying to fill unsold rooms. If you're trying to book really, really last minute, some hotels on this app let you book until 2 a.m.

Available hotel rooms are siloed into categories like basic, luxe, hip, solid, charming and high-roller so you can get a feel for the style of the property. The app works hard to give you the best last-minute rates, and it's simple to choose a property thanks to the app's easily accessible reviews and photos. Take advantage of the Daily Drop feature, where you swipe to find a personalized deal with a special price only valid for 15 minutes after unlocked.

HT Perks is the app's tiered loyalty program. You can progress video game-style through the different levels by reaching specific spending thresholds on the app. You'll also move forward for hitting different "achievements" milestones (such as booking in five different states) which will help you gain access to cheaper rates and credits for future bookings. Plus, your status never expires, so you can only move up, never back down.

Hilton Honors

travel app with hotel booking

Hilton's app has one specific feature that stands out from many other hotel booking apps: the "choose your room" feature. When checking into select properties via the app, you can actually see a map of the hotel layout and tap on the room you'd like to have. This can be especially helpful if you want a high-floor room, prefer to be near the elevator or want a specific view of the ocean, for example. You can also sometimes preorder your favorite pillow type or request snacks and beverages (at an added cost) before arrival using the app. Checking out with a single tap makes your journey home a little less hectic, too. Besides these extras, you can book and manage your trips on the app, as well as view your points balance and elite status.

One feature we love at TPG is the app's digital key feature, which allows guests to skip the front desk visit and head straight to the room (that you hopefully selected!) instead. Also in the app, guests can call Lyfts directly to the hotel or connect to the room to control the TV, lighting and temperature.

Booking.com

travel app with hotel booking

Booking.com is one of the most popular websites for reserving hotels and vacation rentals, and its app is just as useful. In addition to its inventory of 28 million properties worldwide, you'll have access to all past, current and future trips offline. (Plus, the app shows the address of hotels in the local language, which can be extremely helpful when showing a taxi driver your address in a foreign country.) With so many available properties, the app is ideal for booking accommodations in more obscure locations. The interface makes it easy to see what's included in your reservation (great for avoiding pesky resort fees ) and if you can cancel without a penalty. Cheaper rates are typically available if you prepay.

Most properties have several reviews on the app, making it easy to see the pros and cons of each property. The so-called Genius loyalty program gives members discounts at many properties around the world, as well as perks such as welcome drinks, free airport transportation and late checkout. Your Genius level and benefits are visible in the profile section of the app.

IHG One Rewards

travel app with hotel booking

After IHG totally revamped its rewards program , it updated its app to reflect the changes to the program for the 11 million people who signed up after the launch .

Within the refreshed app, travelers can quickly search for and book rooms across IHG brands like Kimpton, Holiday Inn, InterContinental and Six Senses. Users can search for hotels they've never stayed at before or use the Quick Book feature to snag a room at a favorite property.

Members can also check their account standing to see how many points they've earned (and then use those points to book). They'll also be able to see how they've progressed through the program's various tiers and see how close they are to a Milestone Reward. The app also offers modern-age touches like digital check-in and checkout, the chance to sign up for special offers and the option to see how many points you earned for past stays.

World of Hyatt

travel app with hotel booking

Travelers can book more than 900 Hyatt hotels on the World of Hyatt app; they can also manage current trips. Best of all, travelers can use the app to make requests right to the room. TPG reporter Zach Griff used his Hyatt app to request additional amenities during two previous stays. "Both were fulfilled shortly after I submitted them," he said. "The app lets you track the progress of the request, so no need to guess if a phone agent heard you correctly."

The app also features Hyatt Mobile Entry, which is the hotel's version of keyless access to a room (only available at select properties); you'll also have the option to check in via the app and skip the lobby line. Guests can use the app to connect to Chromecast at certain hotels or enjoy a moment of Zen by using the integrated Headspace portion of the app to meditate after a long day of travel.

You can easily track your points progression and elite status in the app, as well as view the benefits of your status. You can use the app to set your room preferences to specific categories — such as a high-floor or accessible room — or upgrade your room. The app makes it simple to contact Hyatt, with options to call the member line, view regional numbers, tweet to or Facebook message the Hyatt Concierge.

travel app with hotel booking

Those looking for steeply discounted hotel bookings should use the Expedia app. It comes with exclusive deals you may not find when booking on its website. This includes deals up to 40% off as well as the app-only Expedia Rewards rate of 2 points per dollar.

The account section of the app shows your rewards activity, as well as how close you are to unlocking elite status. When booking, you have the choice to apply your Expedia Rewards points with the swipe of a button.

Besides the ability to book more than 500,000 properties, you can also reserve flights, car rentals, tours and vacation packages from your phone. When reserving hotels, the app states the payment terms (if you're able to book now and pay later or cancel up until a certain date). It also displays a map of the hotel's location and other important details such as hotel amenities and photos.

Your bookings are available for viewing offline, and all hotel addresses are translated into the local language for easier arrival.

Enter your origin and destination, and Skiplagged will show you the cost of a direct flight, as well as any cheaper "hidden city" flights that have your intended destination as a layover. The caveat? Stick to carry-on luggage, as any checked-in bags will go all the way to the flight's final destination.

  • Travel Apps

If there’s anything better than traveling, it’s the build up. Daydreaming of the perfect destination, scrolling through unique places to stay, and browsing travel guides for the best hole-in-the-wall restaurants and local must-sees are all opportunities to start wanderlusting before you’ve even packed your bags.

booking travel online

Be honest—how many Airbnb Stays do you have bookmarked?

True, it can be overwhelming to map out the nitty gritty flights, connections, accommodation, and pit stops when there are endless options available, but having something exciting to look forward to is one of the keys to happiness after all.

Lucky for you, there are countless apps and websites to help you with booking travel online, so you don’t have to feel overwhelmed when planning the travel adventure of your dreams.

Whether you’re an Apple or Android fan, you’ll have the time of your life in the lead up to your trip with the best travel booking apps and trip planners around!

What to look for in the best travel booking apps

You’re scrolling the app store wondering, what is the best trip planner app? There are hundreds of apps out there—how do you choose? The struggle is real. The truth is, many of them will be more useless than helpful. So how do you weed out the junk that’s clogging up your phone?

The best travel booking apps have these essential features.

1. They’re available offline.

If you’re traveling overseas, there’s no guarantee that you’ll have easy access to WiFi. Unless you have an international phone plan, a local SIM card, or don’t mind roaming charges, limited WiFi can be a killer if you want to access your travel apps in-country. The best travel booking apps have an offline version, so you can access them anywhere, anytime.

2. They include a booking service.

If you’re looking for the best travel booking app, it will definitely have a booking service included. Whether you’re looking for accommodation options or are wanting to book tickets and tours, the ability to book from the app makes everything easier. Let’s call it your one-stop-shop.

3. They have reviews.

The best way to find authentic experiences is to look for recommendations from other people, whether they’re locals or tourists who have stumbled upon hidden gems. Reviews can really make or break your travel plans. The best travel booking apps will definitely have you covered with experienced travelers’ tips and recommendations.

4. They have a translation function.

When you’re traveling between countries, it can be helpful to have a translation function on your travel apps, so you don’t have to switch between apps to get what you’re looking for. With a translation option, you can move about without language barriers, making travel easy even if you don’t speak the native tongue.

5. They have social media integration.

As simple as it sounds, the time it takes to sign up and register for a new app can be a deciding factor for many. In a world where we want information at our fingertips, it can be a turn off when it takes too much time to create a profile before you can use an app.

The best travel booking apps allow you to link your social media accounts—not only for easy access, but so you can share the highlights of your trip directly to your social accounts!

6. They have a travel planner feature.

We want more than just a place to book a bed for the night. We want an app to help us organize our itineraries, bookmark our favorite travel destinations, create schedules, and make travel easy. If you’re wondering what the best trip planner app is, you’ll know you’ve found it when you can plan your travel all in one place.

Booking.com is part of Booking Holdings Inc., the world leader in online travel and related services.

Verified reviews from real guests.

We have more than 70 million property reviews, all from real, verified guests .

How does it work?

It starts with a booking.

The only way to leave a review is to first make a booking. That's how we know our reviews come from real guests who have stayed at the property.

Followed by a trip

When guests stay at the property, they check out how quiet the room is, how friendly the staff is, and more.

And finally, a review

After their trip, guests tell us about their stay. We check for naughty words and verify the authenticity of all guest reviews before adding them to our site.

If you booked through us and want to leave a review, please sign in first.

8 Best Apps for Last-minute Flights and Hotels

Download these travel apps so you're prepared for your next last-minute getaway.

If you're feeling spontaneous and want to head out of town for a last-minute getaway, you'll need some help finding affordable airfare and hotel rates on a whim. There's a good chance you won't be in the mood to sit on your laptop and track price trends, either.

So instead of wasting time bouncing between websites, download these tried and true apps to make planning a last-minute vacation easier. These flight- and hotel-booking apps will help get you on the road — and likely save you money, to boot.

Whether you want a flight, hotel room, car rental, or total trip package, Expedia's easy-to-navigate app has thousands of last-minute choices for any destination. Though actual prices are usually around 20 percent cheaper than what's advertised on Expedia's website, it's not unusual to find savings of up to 50 percent.

Download for iOS or Android .

Type in where you want to go, and this app (or its website) offers up the lowest available fares over the next several months. Being flexible about your destination pays off: if you want to skip town this weekend, simply select your dates, and Fareness will display a list of the cheapest airfares to various cities.

Download for iOS .

If you're looking to book a flight tonight or tomorrow, this app from flight tracker Hopper is your go-to helper. The inventory is from major airlines as well as low-cost carriers, and the prices are always favorable. The app even allows you to keep track of flights so you will be alerted when prices go down.

HotelTonight

Snag a discounted hotel room for the same day or up to a week in advance in more than 1,700 cities. Look for properties with special Geo Rates, which target users based on their GPS location. For example, while you're waiting for a flight at the airport, search for a room at your destination — you can sometimes get a better deal than if you wait to book after you've landed.

Download for i OS or Android .

Cruise Finder by iCruise.com

You normally have to book cruises well in advance — sometimes even a year out. But those looking to hop on deck on short notice can use Cruise Finder's Hot Deal feature to find last-minute savings. Go ahead and book that ocean-view room on a three-night cruise in the Bahamas. You'll pay as little as $200 for a departure within the next month or about $500 for next-day travel.

Download it for iOS or Android .

SecretEscapes

This app lists last-minute deals for upscale hotels — sometimes as much as 70 percent off the rates published online — at properties all around the world. Travelers can also use it to book air and hotel vacation packages.

Travelzoo's app not only lists discounts on packages, hotels, cruises, and flights, but also has an extensive range of special offers for restaurants, spas, and activities. For example, on a recent search, we found a deal for business class tickets on round-trip flights to South America starting at $799.

This app is loaded with suggestions for dining, activities, and events, which you can search based on your travel preferences. It also offers savings on hotel rooms that average around 25 percent off rates advertised online.

I Cut My Hotel Price in Half Using Costco Travel and Still Earned Solid Travel Rewards

Costco Travel Remains a Staple in My Toolbelt

Booking through costco travel, booking through marriott, final thoughts.

When you’re a seasoned points and miles fan, it can become a ritual to simply book all your flights and hotel directly through the airline or hotel brand. This is typically more beneficial than not, as you earn loyalty status and also get direct customer service if something goes wrong.

But occasionally, I’ve found it to be beneficial to book through Costco Travel. Although I typically use this service for rental cars only, I’ve found some solid value in the last few months by using Costco’s all-in-one travel portal.

Here’s what you need to know about how I saved money through Costco Travel for my upcoming Mexico trip.

It’s shocking to me when I tell people about Costco Travel since many people don’t even know it’s a benefit. While it’s not always the best route to go, it’s a great resource to keep in mind when you’re looking for the best deal for your next trip.

On the platform, you can book hotels, rental cars, cruises, and theme park-related getaways, and you don’t need a membership to look through the website to see the available deals. However, you do need a membership (or a friend with a membership) to book through Costco Travel .

If you find a Costco Travel deal worth booking and aren’t a member, simply ask a friend or family member with a Costco membership for their login. I’ve booked rental cars, cruises, and hotels for friends and family through Costco Travel plenty of times with no issue at all. The entire booking can be in someone else’s name, and if you have an Executive Membership, you will earn 2% back to your yearly membership reward.

Regardless of how or where you travel, Costco Travel is worth playing around with, as there can be some great deals.

How I Saved Money Through Costco Travel

Although I recently wrote about how travel prices really haven’t jumped all that much when adjusted for inflation , seeing larger numbers never sits well psychologically. To add insult to injury, I’ve been pretty “points broke,” so I found myself using cash rather than credit card rewards for my recent travels.

Costco storefront

When an opportunity came up to book a nice 5-day getaway in Cancun (a short 1.5-hour flight from Fort Lauderdale, Florida), I jumped right at it. But wow, some of these hotels are charging absurd prices. So I did some digging and found an incredible deal through Costco Travel. Here’s how the numbers shake out for a 5-night stay at the JW Marriott Cancun Resort & Spa and how much it would be if I booked directly through Marriott.

For a 5-night stay for 2 people at the JW Marriott Cancun, I paid $1,905.71, or $381 per night. It was still a bit pricey, but there’s more to take into account.

When booking travel through Costco Travel, you will likely see several promotions or discounts that further incentivize you to book through their portal. And this deal was no different.

Costco Travel Marriott Deal

For this deal, I’m getting the following perks:

  • A $112 Costco gift card
  • Private transportation to and from the airport
  • $50 daily resort credit during the stay
  • $50 spa credit

For the sake of this example, I won’t be counting the resort and spa credits, as booking through Marriott offers the same benefit. But I figure that a $112 Costco Gift Card is essentially a cash rebate. And since I have a Costco Executive Membership, I will earn 2% back on the purchase price, or $38 back. So my out-the-door cost for this stay is $1,755 .

For the $1,905 purchase, I used my Ink Business Preferred ® Credit Card , which earns 3x per $1 spent on travel (and select business categories up to the first $150,000 spent each year), netting me 5,715 Chase Ultimate Rewards Points. At a 2 cents per point valuation , that’s an additional $114 in value for my next trip.

The way I see it, I paid $1,755 for this trip and earned some valuable Chase Ultimate Rewards along the way.

Here’s the sticker shock if I were to have booked through Marriott directly for the same room. For the same 5-night stay when booking direct, I would have paid double — $4,036.

Marriott Hotel Cancun Pricing

This is for the Transportation Package in Cancun , and while it may say $3,315 for the stay, it slyly adds in the government taxes and fees at checkout, bringing the total to just over $4,000.

Marriott Cancun Pricing

This package comes with roughly the same benefits that Costco Travel was offering, with resort and spa credits and transportation to and from the airport. However, it doesn’t come with the Costco gift card.

But, if I were to book directly with Marriott, I would earn 10 Marriott Bonvoy points per $1 — earning me 40,360 Marriott points. And if I used my Ink Business Preferred card for this purchase as well, I would earn 12,108 Chase Ultimate Rewards points. With our points valuation , this would be $282 and $242 in earned value, respectively.

So, with all factors considered, including the rewards I would earn booking the trip, I would have paid $3,512 — double what I paid going through Costco.

The only benefit I would get booking through Marriott and not Costco Travel is earning toward Marriott elite status . But as I rarely stay at Marriott properties and don’t have status, it wasn’t part of my consideration.

Like any purchase you make today, it’s worth shopping around to see if there are better deals out there. Although it may pain you to make a third-party booking where you can’t take advantage of your loyalty status benefits, your wallet will thank you later. With all that money saved, you can definitely afford an extra hot dog on your next trip to Costco.

In 2024, The MICHELIN Guide is announcing the first ever MICHELIN Keys — a brand new distinction that recognizes the most outstanding hotels across the world. Head here for everything you need to know about the new Key distinction, and visit this page to explore the full list of Key hotels in France.

Three Keys is the highest hotel honor in The MICHELIN Guide. Being awarded One Key (127 properties) or Two Keys (38 properties) is difficult enough, but only 24 hotels have earned the Three Key distinction in France. Out of those, nine can be found in Paris. The Three Key hotels excel in all five criteria used to judge hotels by our Inspectors. Here, we thought it fitting to focus on just one of those criteria — the most photogenic of the five — architecture and interior design. Below, take a look at the interiors and exteriors of each of our nine Three Key hotels in Paris.

Unlike any other Travel App

I love to discover and stay at new hotels around the world. Usually I text friends I trust hoping they’ve been where I happen to be going. Safara is like having a friend you trust who’s been everywhere — they have over 500k hotels, curate the best ones in every city so you can choose a new place without worry, and they even have exclusive travel guides to ensure you know what to do when you arrive. If that’s not enough they also give you 10% back in credit on every stay that you can use immediately towards your next hotel. Literally no reason to ever book a hotel anywhere else!

A new way to plan travel

Traveling is my greatest passion and Safara creates a one stop shop for trip planning. The platform is easy to navigate. You can price compare hotels while searching. Alongside all the hotel information, the app includes recommendations from tapped in locals about best neighborhoods to explore, restaurants and nightlife to check out, and unique shopping. Safara feels like talking to a best friend about “what to do” when you’re in that city. Each stay earns you Safara credits towards your next trip which is perfect for all my fellow travel addicts!
Treytravels- we are so happy we can help power your passion!

Easy and chic way to book hotels

My favorite part about this app is that you can type in any city and filter for hotels that are recommended by the app! This helps weed out all the lower star hotels/ bad reviews which helps me when I’m booking last minute travel to a new city. You even get 10% back on all bookings and you can track it all in the app so you are up to date on how much you can spend on your next trip. I’d recommend this app to anyone who travels and is looking for a better way to book hotels!
Happy we could help you, CamalC, weed through the noise and find a great spot to stay!
