Return of the king: Elvis hologram show to premiere in London
Elvis Evolution promises ‘immersive’ experience with concerts also planned for Las Vegas, Tokyo and Berlin
- AI Elvis not the first hologram star to shake his moves on stage
While some believe that the king of rock’n’roll may celebrate his 89th birthday next week propping up the bar of the Heartbreak Hotel, the rest of us will have to make do with an Elvis Presley hologram show in 2024.
Elvis Evolution, an “immersive concert experience” using AI and holographic projection, will premiere in London in November, with shows also planned in Las Vegas, Tokyo and Berlin.
The technology will create a lifesize digital Elvis from thousands of his personal photos and home-video footage. The hologram will perform in a celebration of the star’s life and musical legacy after a deal between Authentic Brands Group, the owners of the Elvis Presley estate, and Layered Reality, a British immersive entertainment company.
Andrew McGuinness, chief executive of Layered Reality, said: “Elvis Evolution is a next-generation tribute to the musical legend that is Elvis Presley.
“Elvis maintains superstar status globally and people around the world no longer want to sit there and passively receive entertainment – they want to be a part of it
“It’ll be a memory-making experience that will be a bucket-list item for Elvis fans and admirers around the world; people can step into the world of Elvis, walk in his shoes and celebrate his extraordinary musical legacy.”
The show will also offer an after-party Elvis-themed bar and restaurant on site at the central London location, with live music, DJs and performances.
The initiative follows the remarkable success of Abba Voyage , a show in which lifesize avatars of the four members of the Swedish pop group perform as their human counterparts appeared in 1979, in a purpose-built arena in east London.
In its first year, Abba Voyage sold more than 1.3m tickets with reports of a forthcoming world tour. The 90-minute show and arena cost £140m and seven years to develop.
The US rock band Kiss have also unveiled avatars of themselves , depicted as superheroes.
Although Elvis never faded from the cultural consciousness, two big-screen treatments in recent years have brought him fresh attention. Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla was released in the UK this week – providing a sympathetic treatment of his ex-wife, who lived her life in his shadow after meeting him at 14 when he was 24.
And in 2022, Baz Luhrmann produced a bombastic biopic of the king’s life in music and at home – earning rave reviews for lead actor Austin Butler .
By the time Presley died suddenly in 1977 at the age 42, he was a musical and cultural giant. He revolutionised popular music, scandalised older generations and was worshipped by the young, causing hysteria and near-riots with his gyrating pelvis. He also starred in a number of movies.
Despite years of prescription drug abuse and a famously unhealthy diet, his death from heart failure came as a shock. Conspiracy theorists claimed he had faked his own death and there have been countless reports of sightings of the legendary star all over the world.
According to one theory, Presley faked his death in order to escape the mafia. Gail Brewer-Giorgio, the author of the 1988 bestselling book Is Elvis Alive?, asserted that the FBI had enlisted Presley as an undercover agent in 1976 to help it infiltrate a criminal organisation called the Fraternity.
Brewer-Giorgio said: “Elvis faked his death because he was going to be killed and there was no doubt about it.”
Some people claimed Presley appeared as an extra in the 1990 blockbuster Home Alone.
A Gallup poll conducted in 1997 found that 4% of Americans thought Presley was alive, and 93% of those surveyed were certain he was dead.

Did Elvis Presley ever perform live in the UK?
Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis biopic tells the story of the King of Rock and Roll, but whether or not he played in the UK is a tale in itself

Elvis Presley had millions of fans across the UK during the height of his powers. However, the musical legend peculiarly never graced the country’s biggest and best arenas to entertain audiences here.
Amazingly, Elvis only ever played three gigs outside of his native USA, with all of them taking place in neighbouring Canada. Lovers of his trailblazing hip-shaking dance moves and trademark spectacular voice missed out on what would have truly been an unforgettable experience.
Why did Elvis never perform live in the UK?
The reason behind Elvis’ UK omission has little to do with the man himself, but rather his manager, Colonel Tom Parker. It is reported that Colonel Parker was in fact an illegal Dutch immigrant who did not hold an American passport.

It is believed the Dutch-born manager refused to let Elvis tour overseas out of fear he would not be permitted to return to the US due to his illegal alien status. Parker was often criticised for his management style, restricting Elvis’ touring career.
That being said, in 2015, the Mirror reported on documents that came to light, indicating that plans were being made for overseas gigs. This would have taken place in Britain and Japan prior to his 1977 death.
Did Elvis ever come to the UK?
Although he never toured on our shores, Elvis was known to have set foot in the UK on at least one occasion. In 1960, Elvis was sighted at Prestwick airport in South Ayrshire on his journey back from military service in Germany, with the airport even displaying a sign proudly proclaiming it to be the only place in the UK ever visited by Elvis.
However, by 2008, another peculiar story came to light, suggesting the Heartbreak Hotel singer joined English entertainer Tommy Steele in 1958 for a day driving around London, admiring some of the capital’s famous landmarks. Theatre producer Bill Kenwright worked with Steele, who was then part of a production of Dr Dolittle in Woking, Surrey, and revealed this secret on Ken Bruce's Radio 2 show.
He said: "It all came from that. It's quite something isn't it - the thought of them wandering around London together? But the impression I got was that they never got out of the car."

2024 Masters: Round 3 tee times
Tee times are now available for the third round of the 2024 Masters Tournament. (Credit David Cannon/Getty)
Change Text Size
AUGUSTA, Ga. – Third-round tee times have been released for the Masters. Max Homa and Bryson DeChambeau will play in Saturday’s final group at 2:45 p.m. ET.
Scottie Scheffler, who’s tied for the lead with Homa and DeChambeau, will tee off 10 minutes earlier alongside Nicolai Højgaard, the Dane who was the youngest player in last year’s Ryder Cup and closed 2023 by winning the DP World Tour Championship. Scheffler is seeking his second Masters win in the last three years. He recently won his second consecutive PLAYERS Championship.
Cameron Davis, a member of the 2022 International Presidents Cup Team, will tee off alongside Collin Morikawa in the third-to-last group. They’ll be preceded by Ludvig Åberg and Matthieu Pavon, the Frenchman who won this year’s Farmers Insurance Open.
Other notable groups include:
- Tiger Woods, Tyrrell Hatton (12:45 p.m. Eastern). The five-time Masters champion Woods has set the record with his 24th consecutive made cut at Augusta National, and he now seeks a climb up the leaderboard for a chance to match Jack Nicklaus' record six green jackets come Sunday. Woods trails the lead by seven strokes into Saturday.
- Patrick Cantlay, Neal Shipley (a) (12:15 p.m.) Ohio State's Shipley has secured low amateur honors as the only of five amateurs in the field to make the cut. He'll play alongside world No. 7 Cantlay, who is still seeking his first major title. Cantlay is eight off the lead, with Shipley nine back.
- Akshay Bhatia, Shane Lowry (12:05 p.m.) Fresh off a victory at last week's Valero Texas Open that secured his first Masters berth, Bhatia kept the good times rolling with rounds of 72-75 to make the cut with three strokes to spare. He'll play alongside a popular Irishman in Lowry, also nine off the lead into the weekend.
- Sahith Theegala, Phil Mickelson (11:25 a.m.). Perhaps two of golf's most creative shotmakers and California natives, both enter the weekend at 4-over 146, trailing the lead by 10 strokes. Theegala finished ninth last year in his Masters debut; Mickelson is a three-time Masters champion.
- Joaquin Niemann, Min Woo Lee (11:05 a.m.). The effervescent Lee has quickly become one of the game's more colorful characters, and he carded 74-74 to make the cut despite a broken finger that he suffered in a gym accident less than two weeks ago. Lee and Niemann both trail the lead by 10 into Saturday.
- Rory McIlroy, Camilo Villegas (10:55 a.m.). Many eyes will be on McIlroy early Saturday, which he'll begin 10 strokes back, as he seeks to make a heroic run toward his first green jacket, which would complete the career Grand Slam. He'll play alongside a popular Colombian in Villegas, who won last fall's Butterfield Bermuda Championship to earn his first Masters berth since 2015.
Here are the full tee times for Saturday's third round:

Bon Jovi doesn't want to be 'the fat Elvis,' will be 'crushed' if vocal surgery puts an end to touring
J on Bon Jovi is "Livin' on a Prayer" that his voice returns to its prime singing days after vocal cord surgery put a halt on live singing in 2022.
Jon, whose full name is John Francis Bongiovi Jr., is on the road to recovery after suffering an atrophied vocal cord which required throat surgery and rehabilitation. He's realizing, though, that performing live may be more challenging on his instrument.
"There is a big difference between being in a studio and going out on the road," he told the Sunday Times . "We have just recorded a new album. I sing in vocal therapy every day."
JON BON JOVI DOESN'T KNOW WHEN HE'LL TOUR AGAIN AS HE RECOVERS FROM MAJOR SURGERY
He added, "But I want to perform for two and a half hours a night, four nights a week — and I know how good I can be, so if I can’t be that guy … put it this way, I don’t ever need to be the fat Elvis."

Elvis Presley commanded the stage and the silver screen as the "King of Rock ‘n’ Roll." His later years in life were marred by a prescription drug dependency and severe health issues all while maintaining a physically demanding schedule.
He died on Aug. 16, 1977, at a hospital in Memphis, after being found unconscious at his Graceland mansion . He was 42.
Despite a new album release in two months, the "Bad Medicine" singer was candid about his future with the band.
"This is the first time I’m saying this. If the singing is not great, if I can’t be the guy I once was … then I’m done," he said. "And I’m good with that."

Jon reflected on the decades of touring he's spent with Bon Jovi, and remained hopeful yet painfully aware that he'll have to make a decision about singing in front of audiences soon.
"I can tell you that 60 is different from 50 and my current concern is that I’m going to forget how to sing," he said. "I’ll be crushed if I can’t sing live again, but what does a quarterback do when faced with the last ball he’ll ever throw? That’s the situation I’m in."
He added, "I want to look back on 40 years of Bon Jovi, look forward to the new album and appreciate everything. That’s my hope: to find joy in it all."
The Hulu docuseries, "Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story," premieres April 26 in four parts. Bon Jovi's 16th studio album, "Forever," will be released June 7.

A retired chiropractor from upstate New York is facing manslaughter charges after he allegedly killed an Elvis Presley impersonator by chloroforming him during sex.
Ronald Rayher, 69, is accused of restraining and binding Thomas Krider, 40, then administering a dangerous dose of chloroform “more than one time” during the sexual encounter, which led to his death on 5 April, according to court documents obtained by the Times Union.
Four days after Krider’s death, Mr Rayher went to the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office and reported that his body was in the basement of his Milton home, according to Undersheriff Jeffrey Brown.
Mr Rayher was arrested and charged with second-degree manslaughter and evidence tampering for allegedly removing Krider’s things from the crime scene, the Times Union said. It is unclear where Mr Rayher got the chloroform.
Investigators said the two had known each other for many years, and both the sexual encounter and the chloroform use appeared to be consensual.
Krider, who went by the stage name ‘TJ Greene’ and who also worked as a tour guide for a local Star Trek museum in Ticonderoga, went missing on Friday when he last spoke to his wife Heidi Greene.
Ms Greene, 42, who reported him missing to Ticonderoga police the next day, said Krider left Friday to pick up a free box spring from a person in return for moving some furniture, the Times Union said.
“He was always so trusting that, even if he met someone one time, they were a friend,” Ms Greene said, recalling her concern over his easygoing trusting nature.
In the days following the Star Trek superfan’s disappearance, his loved ones spread the word on social media.
“He was a sci-fi geek and nerd,” Ms Greene said. “He was into so many things. … He even got a (tattoo) sleeve on his arm of just He-Man and She-Ra characters.”
A GoFundMe that was created to help his wife with funeral expenses, describes Krider as a “talented performer, whether he was wearing sequins as Elvis, or whether he was guiding a Star Trek tour.”
“He brought his compassion and energy to every performance and he touched many lives. The multitude of condolences showing up on social media speak to just how many people loved him.”
As of Friday afternoon the campaign had raised $14,275.
“He was my whole world, my heart, my soul,” Ms Greene said. “I don’t know what I’m going to do without him.”
Rayher was arraigned and is being held at the Saratoga County Jail on $250,000 bail. His next court date is set for 21 May.
