Places To Visit Near Bangalore

Soon Coronavirus will be history and people will be looking for places to visit near Bangalore.

Where some people will ask their friends for suggestions, and others will Google search for ‘tourist places near me’.

Had you searched on Google too and ended up on this blog, this is my recommended list…

If you are new on this travel blog , let me quickly introduce myself and help you build trust in this list of places to visit near Bangalore. I am a full-time travel blogger who quit his corporate career in England to become a blogger. Since 2016, I’ve only been travelling and writing about my journeys.

Where I sometimes travel abroad, most of my travels happen in India. I have been to nearly 25 Indian states, all solo-travelled and self-planned. And since I have spent a lot of time travelling around in Bangalore if there’s one thing I know it is all those popular, offbeat, unknown and famous places to visit near Bangalore.

I am also into motorbiking (I own a Jawa 42 ) and have recently been doing a lot of road trips in India. One of the recent rides I did was a 2 month all India road trip from Delhi to Bangalore to Kanyakumari. So, sharing it all, let’s start with…

Places to Visit Near Bangalore

Before I explain every destination in detail, I want to share an infographic that I have made. Feel free to download and save it in your phone. This can be your bucket list of places you should not miss near Bangalore.

Places To Visit Near Bangalore – Under 250 km

Mysore palace.

Over 6 million people visit Mysore Palace every year — making it one of the most popular holiday destinations in India after the Taj Mahal. It is the official residence of the Wadiyar dynasty and the seat of the Kingdom of Mysore.

The palace was originally built in the 14th century by Yaduraya Wodeyar .

The mere distance of less than 150km from Bangalore moreover makes it one of the top places to visit near Bangalore within 200 kms.

Other places to visit near Mysore Palace are Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens, Sri Chamundeshwari Ammanavara temple and Brindavan Gardens.

Hassan and Belur

Hassan District was the seat of the popular Hoysala Empire in South India, and this gave Hassan, and the nearby town of Belur, many ancient temples and cluster of temple-ruins.

I happened to visit Hassan and Belur during my blog trip with the Ministry of tourism in India while experiencing the Golden Chariot luxury train … and boy, nowhere had I seen such an impressive cluster of ancient temples in India before. The temples in both the towns, combined, reminded me of the temples of Angkor Wat  in Cambodia.

Known as the temple-architecture capital of Karnataka, Hassan is located 187 km from Bangalore. Belur is about 30km from Hassan.

If you are into architecture, and ancient ruin temples, the heritage sites of Hassan and Belur are top recommended places to visit near Bangalore for you.

It is possible to do a one day trip from Bangalore to Hassan and Belur.

Located in Kodagu district, you can call Bylakuppe the Dharamshala of South India, minus the Himalayas. Most of the people living in Bylakuppe are original Tibetan migrants giving Bylakuppe South India’s biggest Tibetan community.

Other than enjoying the Buddhist company, visiting Namdroling Monastery and enjoying Buddhist prayers there is another reason for visiting Bylakuppe. Namdroling happens to be South India’s biggest Buddhist monastery.

Bylakuppe may not be one of the popular places to visit in Karnataka but in my experience, it is certainly one of the best hill stations near Bangalore.

Marvanthe is popular for its landscape and the unique experience of driving on a highway separated with Arabain sea on one side and the emerald green Souparnika River on the other side.

I happened to experience and spend a night in Marvanthe during my all India Delhi to Bangalore road trip . It is possible to visit Marvanthe between Bangalore and Goa.

Apart from enjoying Marvanthe beach, you can also visit Maraswamy Temple and a few nearby islands nearby. Other activities like scuba diving, fishing and snorkelling are also possible in Maravanthe.

Here’s a video for more reasons why Marvanthe is one of the best places to visit near Bangalore within 500 kms.

Located in Coorg, Kodagu is popular for coffee and pepper plantation. Most of it is populated by the native speakers of Kodava language. Since it is a rainforest area, Kodagu has rich wildlife too. There are three wildlife sanctuaries in Kodagu and one national park: Nagarhole National park .

A vacation in Kodagu is all about staying at one of the coffee-estates and learning about coffee-plantation. Other things to do there include trekking, hiking and birdwatching, making it one of the best places to visit near Bangalore.

Read about my experience of staying at a coffee-estate in Kabbinakad — 30km from Madikeri (the headquarters of the district of Kodagu) — for more on how a holiday in Kabbinakad can feel like.

Hampi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, owing to ancient temples and forts. The many monuments in Hampi let travellers delve into history and experience the lost tales of India’s one of the wealthiest and powerful kingdoms, of Vijayanagara Empire.

If you do not know, Hampi is ranked by the New York Times for best places to visit in the world. Here are some photos of Hampi for what to expect when you are there.

It is located at 350 km from Bangalore.

Located in Idukki district of Kerala , in the Western Ghats, Munnar is one of the most famous places to visit near Bangalore. It is popular for tea-gardens, waterfalls, national parks and caves. Think of it as a hill-station with nice weather.

Munnar  is also often referred to as the mini Kashmir of South India. It is a popular honeymoon destination too.

Since it is located at 1500m above sea level, many people also visit Munnar to enjoy pleasant weather — something that’s hard to find in Kerala.

It is possible to explore Munnar over a weekend. Frequent overnight buses moreover make it easy to travel from Bangalore to Munnar . If you want to stay in Munnar, I can recommend The Hosteller. Their location is surreal.

Known as the cultural capital of Kerala, Fort Kochi is popular for its colonial setting. The town got its port in 1341, and built strong trading relations between Arab, Chinese and European merchants in the past — and hence the colony.

If you will read any guidebook on Kerala, you will see the Jew Town and the Chinese fishing nets of Kochi claiming the cover-page.

The town has a rich cafe culture, beautiful boutique hotels, romantic seaside restaurants and a lot more to see and do. You can also find expats from across the world living in Fort Kochi.

With exquisite surroundings and a laidback vibe, Varkala is definitely one of the top tourist highlights in Kerala and one of the best places to visit near Bangalore.

Located in Thiruvananthapuram district in Kerala, Varkala was essentially a temple town. Until about a decade ago, tourists would come to Varkala to only visit its 2000-year-old Janardhana Temple. But over the years, the whole scene has changed. Now travellers from across the world have started coming here seeking a coastal feel, making Varkala a place to relax and unwind.

A few things to see and do in Varkala are: exploring the three beaches of North, South and Central beach, visiting Janardhana temple, trying yoga and ayurvedic massage, hiring a scooter and exploring around.

Out of all the beaches I have explored in Kerala, I found Varkala the most laid back.

What’s the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of Kerala? If it’s renting a houseboat and exploring the backwaters, then Alleppey is a no miss.

Located at nearly 600km from Bangalore, Alleppey makes for one of the most beautiful places to visit near Bangalore.

Though you can find backwater in a few places in Kerala, including the town of Kollam, Kottayam Alumkadavu, Kumbalangi, and Alleppey, the backwaters of Alleppey is bigger and more popular.

Renting a houseboat in Alleppey can, however, cost over six or seven thousand Rupees per day. So if you are a solo traveller like me, rather than exploring the backwater in a houseboat you can drive around the place and enjoy.

Here’s a youtube video from my recent trip to Alleppey in 2020…

Rameshwaram

My favourite destination in the state of Tamil Nadu, Rameshwaram can be best defined as the confluence of traditional legacy and natural adornments.

Though most people who visit Rameshwaram visit seeking spirituality and religion, if you’re not into it, visit for picturesque beaches, unrivalled underwater natural wonders, a sanctuary for birds, and so much more.

Mentions of Rameshwaram can be found in Ramayana (a story-book depicting ancient India’s stories from 7th century BCE to 3rd century CE). And it is because of this that Rameshwaram becomes one of the famous places to visit near Bangalore.

The many temples of Rameshwaram, including Ramanathaswamy temple and Dhanushkodi temple, are as old as the 12th century.

Kanyakumari

The southernmost point of India, Kanyakumari is surrounded by three water bodies. The Bay of Bengal towards the east, the Indian Ocean in the south and the Arabian Sea in the west.

Kanyakumari is named after the goddess Kanyakumari Amman, a popular deity of the area.

Though there are many tourist attractions in Kanyakumari, including a few temples, the most popular highlight is Swami Vivekananda Rock Memorial. If you don’t know, the Swami Vivekananda Rock Memorial is a temple, a museum and a meditation centre built on a rocky island just off the coast, about 500 meters away from the mainland.

Other than that, sunsets and sunrises are of particular beauty and a thing to experience in Kanyakumari.

See my Kanyakumari travel blog for more on what to expect from a trip to Kanyakumari and what makes it one of the highlighted places to visit near Bangalore.

kanyakumari

Goa needs no introduction. It is one of India’s popular holiday destinations attracting travellers from across the world.

Just like most people, I have been to Goa a few times too. And every time I get there, my love for the town only intensifies. From trying snorkelling to enjoying a hot air balloon tour in Goa to drinking beer on beach shacks, there’s a lot to see and do.

Out of all the big towns in India, it is easiest to travel to Goa from Bangalore and Mumbai. Catch an overnight bus, and voila — in less than 1000 Rupees you’re there. Its close proximity, hence, makes it one of the popular places to visit near Bangalore.

If you haven’t been to Goa before, you may want to read my Goa travel tips blog for there’s a lot of plan for a perfect Goa holiday. The place is big, and the basis on where you stay in Goa, you pretty much decide your entire experience. I recommend staying at Agonda beach if you want to have a peaceful experience.

You may also want to read my quiet beaches in Goa blog for more relating details.

If you’re a budget backpacker, you will be happy to know that there are over 50 hostels in Goa .

Here’s a quick video on what to see and do there and expect from your Goa holiday:

Places To Visit Near Bangalore – Under 1000 km

Konkan region, maharashtra.

I’ve done Coastal Maharastra Road Trip , otherwise known as Konkan Road Trip, twice: one in 2018, and one in 2020 (during my all India motorcycle trip).

If you are into road trips, particularly coastal road trips, you won’t find a better place than this. Here, you will come across ferry crossings, historic forts, beaches running parallel to the road, coastal villages and whatnot.

Connecting Mumbai to Goa, the nearly 500km Konkan stretch is a must-do for all road-trip lovers. Other than road-trip lovers, what qualifies the Konkan region as the best places to visit near Bangalore is all other highlights, which includes food, forts, adventure sports and other things that you can try and see there.

Located nearly 900km away from Bangalore, Lonavala is one of the most travelled places from Mumbai (the distance between Mumbai is Lonavala is less than 90km). For Mumbaikars, Lonavala is what Rishikesh is for Delhites or Chikmangalur for Bangaloreans — an every weekend place.

With an elevation of over 2,000 feet, and a wide range of activities like camping, waterfall rappelling, rock climbing, and trekking — Lonavala has something for everyone.

When I first visited Lonavala, with a group of friends, two years ago, I had no idea what to expect. I thought even a weekend might feel too long there. But it turned out that the place had so much to offer that visiting the place for two days was a total injustice.

It may not be one of the most popular destinations for people living in Bangalore, but given its popularity, it deserves the last position in our list of places to visit near Bangalore.

Places To Visit Near Bangalore

  • by Jonny Duncan
  • January 17, 2021 September 23, 2022

Bangalore is the capital of Karnataka state in South India. Karnataka is a rich and green region full of natural resources.

It has jungles, national parks, rivers, waterfalls, backwaters, long coast and coastal villages, scuba diving spots, traditional food, thousands of years old temples, rocks to climb, coffee and tea gardens, spice farms, butterfly parks, and add to the list whatever may come to your mind.

The natural diversity within Karnataka makes it a must-visit state on your India travel . And Bangalore is that green but crowded city of Karnataka from which all of the above places can be visited.

The caveat here is that the plethora of lists on the internet that talk about the many places near Bangalore also list down the destinations that may lie at 500 km away from Bengaluru and never mention that at least two days would be needed for the round trip.

In this article, we will talk about the best places to visit near Bangalore distance-wise.

Places to visit near Bangalore within 300 km

Br hills or biligiri rangana betta hills.

tourist places near bangalore within 500 kms

BR Hills lies about 180 km south of Bengaluru. At least 20 percent of Karnataka’s total area is covered by forest. BR Hills Wildlife Sanctuary is a quintessential national park of the state that makes for one of the best weekend getaways from Bangalore as it only takes about 4-5 hours to drive there.

At an altitude of 3500 feet above sea level, BR hills are located at the junction of the Western Ghats and the Eastern Ghats. Either you can stay there in the BR Hills Jungle Lodges(the official Karnataka Government-run accommodation) or in any other hotel in the area that is close to the sanctuary.

If you book a place in the BR Hills Jungle Lodges you will get a package that will include accommodation, meals, and jeep safaris. Daily morning and evening safaris are conducted by the Jungle Lodges.

Even on a bad day, you can easily see sloth bears, deers, bison, mongooses, and eagles there. I also saw a leopard resting behind a bush. Hope you get lucky, too. (Another must-visit place to see wildlife is the Kali Tiger Reserve about which I will talk in the latter section of places to visit near Bangalore beyond 300 km.)

Chikmagalur

Chikmagalur

Chikmagalur hill station of Karnataka is located 240 km away from Bangalore. Chikmagalur lies on the Western Ghats mountains that are known for their rich vegetation, dense wildlife, and cool weather. It is also popular for its large coffee estates as the weather there is perfect for growing coffee.

You can either take up a stay in a coffee estate of Chikmagalur or book one of the many hotels in the surrounding hills. Chikmagalur is circumscribed by various mountains that can be reached via road up to a point and then can be hiked to arrive at the summit.

Some of the hills to see near Chikamagalur are Baba Budangiri, Mullayanagiri, Kudremukh, Kemmangundi, and Seethalanayagiri — some of these peaks are visible from the town of Chikmagalur and the surrounding area.

Then there are multiple waterfalls such as Hebbe Falls, Kallathigiri falls, Hanuman Gandi falls, Manikyadhara Falls, and Jhari falls to be seen. Lakes such as Hirekolale lake and Ayyanakere lake are also extremely serene and almost empty most of the time. Hirekolale lies near the town but Ayyanakere is a bit further from it.

To travel around Chikmagalur, you would either need your own car or will have to hire a taxi as most places are quite far from each other.

If you love watching wildlife, Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary also lies about 80 km away from Chikmagalur and makes for a perfect one-day trip. Apart from the wildlife safaris, the glimpse of the beautiful Bhadra river around which the sanctuary is located is unforgettable.

Nandi Hills

Nandi Hills

Located from Bangalore at a distance of only about 60 km, Nandi Hills is a perfect one day trip near Bangalore.

When tourists visit Nandi Hills, they mostly go to one of the peaks of the Nandi Hills, which gets its name from the 1300-year-old Dravidian-style Nandi temple and statue situated on the top of the hill.

But the four main peaks that constitute the Nandi Hills range are Nandi Giri, Skandagiri, Channagiri, and Brahmagiri. All these hills can be visited by hiking in the area from one mountain to another.

The temples in the region are known to be as old as 1000 years at least. And one of the main temples to be visited is the Bhoga Nandeeshwara Temple. This ancient temple has extremely intricate carvings on the temple walls and the pillars.

Hindu families usually have weddings at this temple for its beautiful backdrop. There is a  stepped-stone pool on the premises for perfect photography.

You can visit the Nandi Hills area with a guide or on your own. But if you are coming by yourself do make sure you carry the right maps and wear good hiking shoes.

Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary

Ranganathittu bird sanctuary is located 130 km from Bangalore and the journey would take 3-4 hours.

Declared a sanctuary in 1940, the Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary is a must-visit for bird watchers. The sanctuary is spread over the river Kaveri and its small islets over a total area of only 0.67 square kilometers.

Ranganathittu is a regular nesting ground for local and migratory birds from Europe, the Americas, and Siberia who come here every year at the same time.

The best season to visit the Ranganathittu bird sanctuary is from December to June. Migratory birds come in December and nesting begins in February. So if you visit in the months of March and later, the sanctuary is quite a scene with the birds frolicking around feeding their young ones while the little chicks chatter from their nests on the trees or directly on the soil of the islands.

The various birds that can be seen in the Ranganathittu Sanctuary are the painted storks, blue and pied kingfishers, cormorants, herons, river terns, black and white egrets, Indian roller birds, ibis, bee-eaters, and pelicans.

The sanctuary has many restaurants so you don’t have to carry your own food. Or you can always get out of the sanctuary and eat at the many places in the town of Mysore that is very close by. Take a good camera and a pair of binoculars.

The sanctuary has many boat ride options to get onto the river. You can either take a special or a shared boat ride. The special boat ride is 40 minutes long, takes in about seven people, and goes further than the regular boat ride. The special ride costs about 1500 Indian rupees or about $21.

A walk through the garden in the sanctuary is a must to see beautiful trees and watch the crocodiles in a distance.

Bonus Tip: If you have some time, do see the city of Mysore.

Located 250 km from Bangalore, Coorg is another district on the Western Ghats of South Karnataka.

Coorg is famous for its rolling hills, the local Kodava community that has occupied the region for hundreds of years, the coffee estates, and the rich wildlife and open mountains that can be visited year-round.

You can also see the Namdroling Monastery on your way to Coorg from Bangalore. Some of the peaks to visit in Coorg are Brahmagiri and Tadiandamol hills. Abbey falls are the largest waterfall in the area. Though they are crowded all the time, it is a good idea to see the giant falls at least once.

Then there is the Dubare Reserve Forest and Elephant Camp near Coorg. When I went there while coming back from Coorg to Bangalore, the camp was closed because of a really high level of water in the river. But if you visit the camp in the dry months, you will be able to bathe the elephants. There is a small entry fee to get inside the reserve.

The origin of the Cauvery river called Tala Kaveri also lies near Coorg(50 km away). The place is called the Talakaveri Wildlife sanctuary and you can walk around in nature there and visit the different temples. Padi Igguthappa temple, Omkareshwara Temple, and Cherala Bhagavathy Temple are the important temples of the region.

Places around Bangalore outside the 300 km radius.

Kali tiger reserve.

Kali tiger reserve

Kali Tiger Reserve or the Kali Wildlife Sanctuary is located at a distance of about 473 kilometers and is one of the farthest places to visit around Bengaluru. But Kali sanctuary deserves a trip because it is a gorgeous and wildlife-rich place.

The sanctuary sits on the Kali river and crocodiles can be seen sunbathing right from the banks of the river. The Kali Jungle Lodges is located on the banks, so if you stay there, you can watch the crocodiles from the balcony of your hut. You can also take a coracle ride in the Kali river to look at the crocodiles from up close.

The jungle safaris to the forest(again conducted by the Karnataka forest department and the Jungle Lodges) are a must here. You have the chance to see at least some of the fifteen tigers, twenty-three panthers, and twenty-seven leopards that fill the 1200 square km Dandeli jungle— the larger forest to which the Kali reserve belongs to.

Visit the sanctuary in the dry season. In the summers, animals travel long distances to drink water and there are greater chances to see them.

places to visit near Bangalore Hampi

Locals here say that if you have seen Hampi, you have seen the richer and royal days of Karnataka.

Located at a distance of 340 km, Bangalore to Hampi travel takes about 6 hours by road. Hampi is located on the banks of the Tungabhadra river and is a ruined capital of the Vijayanagara empire — one of the richest empires of South India.

The empire was defeated and all that remains now is the 1600 ruins, sculptures, and relics that have been discovered in the Hampi area over centuries.

You can visit the various green villages near Hampi, climb the boulder hills of Hampi, spend time in the thousands of years old temples, eat unlimited crispy dosas, and take the coracle over the Sanapur lake outside the main Hampi.

Oh, don’t forget to visit the Daroji Bear Sanctuary near Hampi to see some bear action from up close.

Hampi is one of the best places near Bangalore and is worth the long journey.

Language in Karnataka

The state primarily speaks Kannada but some people in bigger cities and touristy destinations speak English, too. The tourism industry will be able to talk in English but rural areas only understand Kannada.

It might come in handy to have a Google Translate app installed on your phone.

Best Time to Visit the places around Bangalore

Karnataka lies in the South of India and the best time to visit the region is from October to March. Outside these months, many of the places listed above would be hot. But you would still be able to go to Chikmagalur and Coorg for these have a moderate(or colder) temperature year-round due to their location and altitude.

But in summer months, even the main towns of Chikmagalur and Coorg would be pretty warm so restrict yourself to the greener parts of the destination.

How to travel in Karnataka

Karnataka is well connected by buses, trains, and cars. Most of the above places to see near Bangalore can’t be accessed by flights because of their mountainous location.

So either rent a self-drive car or hire a taxi. Overnight buses also run frequently between places so you don’t always need a private vehicle but it is good to have one.

Bangalore Palace

In the technology-driven, futuristic Silicon Valley of India, monuments of historical significance boasting of a glorious past are also abundant. The historical heritage of the city is so magnificent and eminent that it rises to prominence on its own. One such landmark is the Tudor style Bangalore Palace. The Palace is a perfect representation of the lavishness and splendour with which India's most resilient dynasties ruled. Famous for its opulent architecture and amusement activities, the Palace is visited by several visitors every day. The colossal Palace boasts of massive courtyards, bright interiors, kingly grounds, splendid spiral staircases, stately towers and a luscious garden in a proud display of posh regality.Anyone who admires classic architecture and artistry would be delighted to experience it first hand at this Palace. It also houses an amusement park in its enclave to the delight of many younger visitors. Having been a private residence to the Wodeyar family, Bangalore palace offers a linear perspective into the royal life of the forepassed era. It is plush with a vibrant and varied collection of ancient royal artefacts, paraphernalia, hunting trophies and family photos. The Palace houses some of the most famous paintings of the 19th Century, including the works of one of India's most celebrated artists Raja Ravi Verma. The Palace grounds very often become venues for concerts and festivals. World-renowned artists like Enrique and Guns N' Roses have graced the palace grounds with their talent and presence. The Palace hence combines the richness and luxury of royal history with the vivacious and exuberant demeanour of the youth. Bangalore Palace HistoryOriginally a property of Reverend J Garrett, the principal of a school in the cantonment town at that time, the area where the Palace is now located was purchased from him by the British Guardians of Maharaja Chamarajendra Wadiyar for 40,000 rupees. The construction of the palace began in the year 1874. Mr John Cameron of Lalbagh was assigned the task of landscaping Palace along with its surroundings. The complete construction of the palace was completed in the year, 1878.The Palace saw many additions and modifications in its architecture in subsequent years. Maharaja Jayachamaraja Wadiyar added a few portions like the twin external staircase, the platform for musicians etc. outside the Durbar Hall. In 1970, HH Jayachamarajendra Wodeyar transferred ownership of the property to two companies, Chamundi Hotels and Shree Venkateshwara Real Estate Enterprises. However, this transaction was later shown to be fraudulent. A legal battle followed between this deal and Jayachamarajendra's son, Srikanta Datta. The five sisters of Srikanta Datta are now in possession of sections of the 28 acres of the Palace. In the year 1990 Srikant Datta finally compromised with the Chamaraju group and got back his part of the property including the main Palace except for 45 acres that the Chamaraju group still retains. Architecture:The Palace showcases exquisite wooden interiors surrounded by pristine walls. The Palace is enclosed within beautiful gardens. The architecture is a medley of Tudor style and Scottish style and has gothic undertones. A lot of physical artefacts inside are of British origin. It is said that the architecture of this building is inspired by that of the Windsor Castle and other architectural marvels of England and Normandy. The most prominent features of the Palace like the two-level granite structure of the fortified towers and turreted parapets take direct inspiration from the Tudor building styles. The entrance is decorated with grand Roman arches. The exterior of the building is covered in eccentric shapes and angles. The exterior walls are of a blushing cinnabar shade that gives the building a quaint Victorian vibe. The floor of the open courtyard of the Palace is adorned with granite seats covered with azure ceramic tiles. The ground floor also contains a beautifully decorated ballroom. The first floor of the Palace has a distinct chamber known as the Durbar Hall attached to an ornate staircase. This hall is famous for the enormous elephant head that is mounted in it and its gothic style tinted glass windows.
