Although one of Mexico's most industrialized cities (it's also the wealthiest and most westernized) Monterrey boasts one of the country's most attractive large city settings. It lies in the Santa Catarina Valley, dominated by the curiously jagged, 1,740-meter-tall Cerro de la Silla (Saddle Mountain) and 2,380-meter-tall Cerro de la Mitra (Mitra Mountain) — both of which make for exceptional sightseeing adventures and easy day trips — and is the capital of the state of Nuevo León.

Despite being an ultramodern city, Monterrey has managed to retain some of its traditional Spanish atmosphere in its narrow alleys, flat-roofed houses, and picturesque patios, particularly around the Barrio Antiguo , the city's old quarter, which is experiencing something of a renaissance.

First settled in the 16th century, its importance as a cultural hub is evident in its many fine museums and galleries, along with the public squares and parks used to host a number of important events and festivals.

To ensure you find the best places to visit in Monterrey, be sure to make use of our list of the top things to do in Monterrey.

View from Macroplaza

The world's fourth largest public square, Monterrey's Macroplaza is a great place to begin a tour of the city due to its proximity to many of the most important tourist attractions, most within walking distance or an easy bus or subway ride. Built in the 1980s, this 99-acre square encompasses a number of older plazas and their monuments, as well as pretty gardens that invite visitors to linger.

Perhaps the best-known landmark — and certainly the easiest to spot — is the 70-meter-high Lighthouse of Commerce (Faro del Comercio), a massive rectangular structure that is particularly impressive at night when its dazzling green laser shoots out across the city.

Other Macroplaza points of interest include the sandstone Government Palace (Palacio de Gobierno) with its colonial patio and fresco-decorated state apartments and artifacts, among them the guns used to execute Emperor Maximilian and his generals in 1867. Other features of note are the Esplanade of Heroes (Esplanada de los Héroes), the massive Neptune Fountain (Fuente de la Vida), and a memorial to the city's founder, Diego de Montemayor.

MARCO: Museum of Contemporary Art

Opened in 1991, the stunningly designed Museum of Contemporary Art (Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Monterrey, or MARCO for short) stands on Gran Plaza and is a must for those curious about Mexican art. In addition to its many excellent temporary exhibitions, MARCO boasts an extensive permanent collection of modern art from across the country.

Highlights of the museum's 11 galleries include numerous fine paintings, sculptures, and installations from leading Latin American artists, as well as a smattering of works from international artists.

The building itself is something of a piece of art, with highlights including its sculpture garden and a fascinating courtyard with a reflective mirror fountain. Also of interest to art lovers is Pinacoteca de Nuevo León , a museum offering visitors a look at fine art from Nuevo León from the 19th century onwards.

And just around the corner from the MARCO site is the Metropolitan Museum of Monterrey (Museo Metropolitano de Monterrey), located in a 17th-century palace and home to a variety of displays related to the city's rich history.

Metropolitan Cathedral of Our Lady of Monterrey

Monterrey's most important catholic edifice, and one of the top free things to do in the city (though donations are always welcome), the Metropolitan Cathedral of Our Lady of Monterrey (Metropolitana de Nuestra Señora de Monterrey) is well worth including on a walking tour of the city's downtown core. Work on the building started in the mid-18th century but it took some 150 years or so to finish, finally being declared complete around 1890.

Although not granted cathedral status until 1994, this impressive structure has long been the seat of the local archdiocese.

In addition to its fine exterior with twin towers and fancy ornamentation - the result of many different influences over the decades - the building boasts a fine interior with many examples of 19th-century colonial artwork, including a number of large murals by well-respected Mexican artist Angel Zárraga.

The Santa Lucia Riverwalk

One of the most pleasant walks in Monterrey is along the spectacular Santa Lucia Riverwalk (Paseo Santa Lucía), a man-made river that opened in 2007 and which stretches nearly three kilometers across the city, connecting the Macroplaza to Fundidora Park .

Along the way, you'll discover numerous interesting sculptures (including a genuine Canadian Inukshuk, a stone landmark or cairn), fountains, and other architectural highlights as the river meanders through the pleasant parkland along its riverbanks.

A number of pontoon-style riverboats also provide a fun diversion (fee required), and in a few locations, cafés and restaurants have set up patios overlooking the river.

Travelers should also note that it's also safe to walk after nightfall due to the illuminations of the sculptures and points of interest lining the river, as well as due to the presence of 24-hour surveillance; free Wi-Fi is available along its entire length.

Address: Santa Lucia, Centro, 64000 Monterrey, N.L., Mexico

Fountain in Fundidora Park

A fun addition to any exploration of the Santa Lucia Riverwalk is to take a slight diversion and explore the many attractions to be enjoyed in Fundidora Park (Parque Fundidora) — and if time's at a premium, you can always take a boat back to the Macroplaza .

Located on the grounds of the city's old foundry — now a fascinating museum — Fundidora's highlights include a number of family attractions that kids will enjoy, including playgrounds; a sports arena with an ice rink; an artificial lake; a water park; and Sesame Street Park (Parque Plaza Sesamo), a theme park based upon the popular TV show.

It's also home to the CONARTE art facility, along with a hotel and convention center. (Editor's Note: It's a large park, so be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes.)

Other park areas with attractions worth exploring are Parque Zoologico La Pastora, the city's small yet popular zoo, and Parque Loroventura, a park with an adventure playground with giant dinosaur statues, 80 bird species, plus a variety of kids' rides.

Address: Avenida Fundidora y Adolfo Prieto S/N, Obrera, 64010 Monterrey, N.L., Mexico

Museum of Steel (Museo del Acero)

One of the largest museums in Mexico, the Museum of Steel (Museo del Acero) is a must-see when in Monterrey. Built within a former steel mill, this fascinating attraction on the perimeter of Fundidora Park celebrates the city's long tradition as a steel manufacturing hub.

Built around the old plant's massive 70-meter-tall blast furnace, this must-see attraction includes numerous exhibits dealing with the production of steel, as well as related products and industries.

Another museum dedicated to the city's industrial past is the Glass Museum , opened in 1992 and concentrating on the history of glassmaking in the region. Also worth a visit are the Museo de Monterrey with its large collection of modern art by Latin American artists; Museo del Noreste , notable for its many exhibits dealing with the region's past; and the Palace Museum (Museo del Palacio), which showcases the region's social and political history.

Address: Avenida Fundidora y Adolfo Prieto S/N, Parque Fundidora, 64010 Monterrey

A colorful building in the Barrio Antiguo

The subject of rejuvenation and revival in recent years, the city's old Spanish Quarter, Barrio Antiguo, is an interesting area to explore. Just a short distance from the Macroplaza, the area-once a no-go zone for visitors for its unsavory goings-on-is slowly gaining popularity for its many well-preserved examples of 18th- and 19th-century colonial architecture.

While the former commercial center of Monterrey is now subject to a variety of restoration and development projects that will make it even more of a tourist attraction, it has already been improved a great deal by making many of the old cobbled streets for pedestrians only. Numerous attractive boutique shops, restaurants, and cafés can be enjoyed here, along with galleries and a sprinkling of museums.

Mexican History Museum

Perhaps making up for the city's lack of ancient Mayan or Aztec archaeological sites — Monterrey was never settled prior to the arrival of the Spanish — the Mexican History Museum (Museo de Historia Mexicana) boasts a superb collection of Pre-Columbian artifacts.

Built in 1994, this hi-tech museum offers visitors a look at Mexico's rich history since the first people settled around the country thousands of years ago to colonial times and the present day through its vast collections and many interactive displays.

Spread across four large halls are exhibits dealing with the country's cultural, economic, and political history portrayed through the use of art and models. The museum also boasts a man-made river with boat rides, and an on-site restaurant and store.

Hot Tip: Be sure to book the services of an English-speaking guide or purchase an English language guidebook upon entry, and if you're visiting on a Tuesday or Sunday, admission is free.)

Address: Calle Doctor José Ma. Coss 445, Centro, 64000 Monterrey, NL

Palacio del Obispado

Perched high up on a hill known as Cerro del Obispado stands the former Bishops' Palace, or Palacio del Obispado. This splendid old palace dates from the end of the 18th century and served at different times as both a fortress and a hospital, and in 1913 was even the holdout of notorious bandit and revolutionary hero Francisco "Pancho" Villa.

These days, the building is home to the Regional Museum (Museo Regional de Nuevo León) with its many interesting exhibits focusing on the state's cultural and economic development. Of particular interest is the chapel with its fine Churrigueresque façade and numerous artifacts relating to the Mexican War of Independence.

Cerro del Obispado is also a popular place to visit for its superb views over the city, along with its monuments, including the huge Mirador del Obispado . It's also fun for families traveling with children due to its carousel and pleasant walking trails.

Address: Rafael J. Verger S/N, Obispado, 64000 Monterrey

The García Caves

Just a short drive northeast of Monterrey is the small town of García , home to the Garcia Caves (Grutas de García), one of Mexico's largest cave systems . Reached by a cable car ride that offers superb views over the surrounding countryside, this fascinating network of caves part way up the 1,080-meter-tall El Fraile mountain, part of the Cumbres de Monterrey National Park , makes a fascinating excursion away from the bustling metropolis.

Two paths descend into the brightly lit caverns, which were formed more than 50 million years ago, ensuring you'll get plenty of good photos of the amazing rock formations within. Of particular interest is a chamber known as the Light Chamber (El salón de la luz), named after the nearly translucent quality of the cavern's ceiling.

Another worthwhile diversion is to the beautiful Horsetail Waterfalls (Cola de Caballo) about 40 kilometers southwest of the city. Named after the wispy patterns made by the water as it plunges to the pool below, the falls are accessible via footpath and rope bridge.

Address: Carretera a Villa de García S/N, Parque Grutas de García, Santiago

La Purísima Church

One of Monterrey's more unusual modern buildings is La Purísima Church (Iglesia La Purísima), just a little west of Gran Plaza at the junction of Avda Padre Mier and C Serafin Peña. Widely regarded as one of the best examples of modern sacral architecture in Mexico, this unusual looking catholic church-it's not unlike a WWII-era aircraft hangar with its tall walls that curve up to form the ceiling-was constructed by Enrique de la Mora y Palomar in 1946.

After marveling at the interesting exterior with its many sculptures and monuments, be sure to pop inside for a look at the interior décor, as well as a chance to admire the curving structure up close.

Address: Serafín Peña, Centro, Monterrey

Cerro de la Silla

Looking at the highest point in Monterrey is one thing, but actually summiting it is quite another. The journey up Cerro de la Silla (Saddle Mountain) is a challenging journey, but you will truly be rewarded with the very best seat in the house.

The mountain is the most famous peak in Monterrey and reaches 1,820 meters . Hikers can put an hour's worth of work in for fantastic views, while more experienced outdoors people can continue to climb for another few hours to reach the top.

Of course, you don't have to test your limits to get out into nature. A visit to Chipinque Ecological Park can satisfy your adventure mode without having to throw you into overdrive.

Chipinque Ecological Park is located in Cumbres de Monterrey National Park at the base of the Sierra Madre mountains. The park has more than 60 kilometers of trails for mountain biking and hiking . Along the way are several lookouts and vistas, especially as you ascend toward the top. And if you don't feel like tackling the mountain on foot, you can always drive to the lookouts.

Parque La Huasteca

About 20 minutes from the city center is the expansive Parque La Huasteca , one of the first established climbing areas in Mexico that sits at the base of the Sierra Madre mountains. One of Monterrey's top natural attractions, this stunning spot is a paradise for outdoor adventurers.

The park is most famous for its nearly 1,000-foot-tall canyon walls. It's these walls that call some of the most experienced climbers in the world. Inexperienced climbers can also try the beginner-friendly Via Ferrata , as well as rappelling, walking, and hiking trails , and swimming holes that crop up along the babbling river.

The park is open every day in all seasons, though the hurricane and rainy season is between June and October and can be very wet inside the park.

Address: Parque La Huasteca, Miguel Hidalgo, 66196 Santa Catarina, N.L.

One of Monterrey's most important churches, the Basilica of Guadalupe is one of the most famous in the country. Every year, it draws thousands of worshippers who come to celebrate December 12, the day dedicated to the feast of the Virgin Mary.

Unlike other churches in Mexico, the Basilica of Guadalupe is shaped like a pyramid. Inside, it has 55 gold crowns and an enshrined portrait of the virgin.

Address: Guanajuato 715, Independencia, 64720 Monterrey, N.L.

The Top 13 Things to Do in Monterrey, Mexico

tourist places in monterrey mexico

Sergio Mendoza Hochmann / Getty Images

Monterrey, the capital of the state of Nuevo Leon, is one of the largest cities in Mexico and is known as a modern industrial and technological hub. There are many things to do here, from exploring the city's museums and plazas to visiting its large parks and monuments, as well as discovering the charming old neighborhood. Monterrey is surrounded by mountains on all sides, and day trips into the surrounding Sierra Madre mountain range offer a range of experiences for nature and adventure lovers.

Take a Stroll in the Macroplaza

The name "Macroplaza" for Monterrey's main city square isn't hyperbole because it's actually massive. In fact, it's the biggest city square in Mexico and one of the biggest in the world. The Macroplaza sits right in the middle of the colorful Barrio Antiguo neighborhood, so it's nearly impossible not to come across it at some point during your trip to Monterrey.

The plaza is filled with monuments and important buildings, but none of them compare to the Faro de Comercio, or Commerce Lighthouse . The rust-colored structure soars nearly 230 feet into the sky and is visible from almost all parts of Monterrey. At night it puts on a light show which is why it's called the lighthouse. Take a stroll through the Macroplaza on a sunny day to see the lighthouse and other monuments, or just enjoy some wide open space in the middle a bustling city.

Hike and Spot Wildlife at Parque Ecologico Chipinque

The ecological park Chipinque is just 20 minutes outside of the city center by car, but you'll feel like you've driven hours away from Monterrey the moment you enter this nature reserve. It's a local favorite for hiking, cycling, and jogging, and the reason why is apparent from the breathtaking scenery. Wildlife is abundant, from native birds to the adorable raccoon-like coati. Bring a backpack with snacks and drinks to reward yourself with a picnic after your hike, as it's worth spending a full afternoon in the park. If you have a vehicle, you can drive directly to the top of the mountain and begin your hike from there for a less strenuous trek.

Explore Former Steel Foundy at Fundidora Park

abalcazar / Getty Images

Monterrey owes a lot of its wealth to the steel industry and when the Monterrey Foundry folded in the 1980s, this industrial complex was transformed into a large public park. Around the green areas, there are numerous steel structures and pieces of machinery that stand as a testament to the park's previous usage. You can enjoy a number of recreational activities here, like inline skating and bike riding. There are play areas for children as well as several museums, an arts center , and even a Sesame Street theme park for the youngest visitors.

Enjoy the View From the Asta Bandera

The largest monumental flag in Mexico waves at the top of the Cerro del Obispado  (Bishop's Hill) and from here you enjoy some great panoramic views of the city and the Sierra Madre mountains beyond it. There are special ceremonies held here on certain holidays, such as Flag Day on Feb. 24 and Mexican Independence Day on Sept. 16, but you can enjoy the views any day of the year. The 18th-century Palacio del Obispado, one of the city's oldest buildings, is also located on the hilltop and has an impressive baroque facade. It also houses the Regional Museum of Nuevo Leon.

Ride a Boat Along the Paseo Santa Lucia

Nadia Briseida / Eye Em / Getty Images

Throughout the day, small riverboats make their way along the Paseo Santa Lucia , an artificial river that connects the Parque Fundidora with the Macroplaza, Monterrey's main square. To walk along the scenic path is just under a mile and a half, and it's a gorgeous way to spend a day seeing the best of Monterrey. However, you can also take a riverboat for an even more memorable experience. Boats depart daily between 10 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. and the cost is 100 Mexican pesos, or roughly $5, with discounts available for kids and seniors.

Appreciate Modern Art at the MARCO

Sergio Mendoza Hochmann / Getty Images

Monterrey's Museum of Contemporary Art, the MARCO, has an impressive permanent collection featuring great artists such as Siqueiros, Leonora Carrington, Rodolfo Morales, and Brian Nissen to name but a few, but also organizes temporary exhibits throughout the year. Take your photo with the huge bronze sculpture of a dove, "La Paloma" by Juan Soriano, which greets visitors at the museum's entrance. MARCO is open from Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. On Wednesdays and Sundays, admission is free for all visitors, otherwise tickets are 90 pesos.

Take a Stroll Through the Barrio Antiguo

Elijah-Lovkoff / Getty Images

When you get tired of the modern feel of this big city, check out the Old Town, which is located near the cathedral. Here you can stroll cobblestone streets and see the historical area, which has mansions dating from the 18th and 19th centuries as well as an abundance of cafes, bars, and restaurants. Once the sun goes down, check out the area's clubs and concert halls. On weekends, vendors set up stalls selling jewelry, art, antiques and vintage items. The bohemian feel of this area makes for a nice change of pace from the rest of the modern industrial city.

Learn About Mexican History

Gain insight into the region's history at any or all of Monterrey's three excellent history museums . The Museo de Historia Mexicana offers a broad overview of the country's past, with more than 1,200 artifacts from pre-colonization to the present day. The Museo del Noreste, connected to the previously mentioned museum by a footbridge, focuses specifically on the history of the northeast area of Mexico. The Museo del Palacio, located in the neoclassical government palace in the center of town, offers a peek into the history of the city of Monterrey.

All three museums are closed on Mondays. The Museo del Palacio has free admission every day, and a ticket purchased at either the Museo de Historia Mexicana or Museo del Noreste is good for both museums.

Eat Regional Specialties

The cuisine of northern Mexico is based on meat, beans, and a preference for wheat tortillas over corn, although in a modern city like Monterrey you'll find a wide variety of foods. One of the main traditional dishes to try here is called cabrito ("little goat"), which is a kid cooked by roasting over an open pit, or al pastor style on a spit. The goat is usually served with beans and tortillas. Another regional specialty is machaca (sometimes called machacado), which is shredded dried beef or pork that is rehydrated and served with a sauce in tacos or flautas (deep-fried tacos). Vegetarians will still find plenty of options, especially in Barrio Antiguo where there are vegan and vegetarian food stalls and restaurants.

Sample Sweets at the Museo del Dulce

The small but whimsical Museo del Dulce, or Museum of Sweets, is designed to look like a mid-19th century home, and it's here you can learn about the history of regional sweets from the state of Nuevo Leon and how they're made. You'll get to see and taste the ingredients used, including lots of local fruits that you may not be familiar with, and see the traditional utensils used in the process. There's also a shop where you can purchase some more sweets for the rest of your stay. But be careful, since Mexican candy often blends sweetness with something surprisingly spicy.

Go Cave Exploring

The amazing cave system at the Grutas de Garcia was discovered in 1843 but is estimated to have formed over the past 60 million years. Located in the mountains about 14 miles (20 kilometers) away, or a 20-minute drive from the city, this is an excellent choice for a day trip from Monterrey. Ride a cable car with stupendous views up to the entrance of the cave or hike up along mountain paths, and then once inside the cave, be surprised by majestuous theaters connected by tunnels as well as interesting formations of stalactites and stalagmites.

See an Impressive Waterfall

Oscar Barrera / Eye Em / Getty Images

The Cascada Cola de Caballo ("Horse Tail Waterfall") is located in the Cumbres de Monterrey National Park, about 28 miles (45 kilometers) from Monterrey city. This 82-foot-tall waterfall comes down in a formation that looks like a horse's tail. It's an easy trek around the falls with several observation points where you can take photos and enjoy the tranquil views of the water bouncing off the rocks and the surrounding vegetation. After visiting the waterfall, make a stop at Villa de Santiago, a charming colonial-era town nearby.

Get an Adrenaline Rush at Hornos3

Part of the old steel foundry in Parque Fundidora, Museo del Acero Horno 3  offers several different experiences. You can visit the Foundry, see the machinery and some exhibits about the steel industry, and go all the way to the top of the structure in the elevator. But if you're looking for an adrenaline rush, try the H3 Canopy adventure in which you descend 230 feet (70 meters) from the top of the structure through a series of zip lines, rappels, and a suspension bridge.

25 Best Things to Do in Monterrey 2024

  • by Nellie Huang

Heading to Mexico’s most modern metropolis? Here’s our complete guide and detailed list of things to do in Monterrey.

On my first trip to Monterrey, I had no idea what to expect, but I was truly surprised to find a modern metropolis, brimming with world-class museums and glitzy neighborhoods. As a thriving economic powerhouse, Mexico’s third-largest city boasts soaring skyscrapers and colossal malls, but it equally shines with an impressive cultural scene that includes top-notch art centers and entertainment attractions.

But what truly sets Monterrey (which translates to mean ‘The King of Mountains’) apart is its dramatic backdrop — the imposing Sierra Madre Oriental mountains . With jagged peaks and colossal hills, this natural wonderland in northeastern Mexico offers a plethora of outdoor experiences just beyond the city limits.

In this guide, I’ve picked out the best things to do in Monterrey and I’ve mapped them out like a walking tour. I also included things to do around Monterrey, as well as best time to visit, safety tips and recommendations on hotels and restaurants.

Monterrey’s beating heart lies within the sprawling Macroplaza, a monumental square that ranks among the world’s largest . The main square may look pretty barren, but that’s because it had only been created in the 1980s following the demolition of a substantial chunk of prime real estate.

Today, it’s a hub for cultural and civic activities with the occasional celebrations held here, and shoeshiners and street vendors setting up shop in the square. Depending on the time of year, Macroplaza often hosts concerts, festivals, and cultural events.

things to do in monterrey - macroplaza

Commanding attention within the Macroplaza is the striking Faro del Comercio (Lighthouse of Commerce), a towering brick-red structure soaring to a height of 70 meters. Designed to resemble a lighthouse, this monolithic landmark was constructed to celebrate commerce and progress in Monterrey.

Every evening, the Faro del Comercio projects powerful green lasers into the night sky, creating a striking visual display. This light show was intended to symbolize Monterrey’s commitment to innovation, trade, and the future.

things to do in monterrey - faro

Just across the thoroughfare from the Faro, you’ll find the baroque-style Catedral Metropolitana de Monterrey . The city’s cathedral looks surprisingly petite compared to its grandiose counterpart in Mexico City. Inside its hallowed confines, a central nave forms the shape of a cross, flanked by an array of niche chapels.

things to do in monterrey - cathedral

To the south of the Cathedral is the Museo de Contemporaneo Arte , known as MARCO. The Museum of Contemporary Art is regarded as one of Mexico’s premier contemporary art museums. It houses a diverse collection of contemporary art from both Mexican and international artists. The museum often hosts temporary exhibitions and cultural events, making it a dynamic space for art enthusiasts.

macro - places to visit in monterrey

Just to the east of MARCO is the once-neglected historic downtown, Barrio Antiguo that has undergone a complete transformation and become my favorite area in Monterrey . This was once a crime-ridden neighborhood plagued by clashes between narco gangs.

But in recent years, the crime has reduced substantially and Barrio Antiguo is now undergoing a revival of sorts. There are new coffee shops, quirky cafes, bars that sell craft beer, and small independent shops that are bringing people back to this historic area. The historical houses are being restored, their walls splashed with bright paint and mural art.

The pedestrianized street of Calle Morelos is filled with cool bars, outdoor cafes and small knicknack shops. Stop by the Mercado Barrio Antiguo , a lively food market where you can try different street foods and craft beers. Keep walking, and you’ll come across Libros Café Y Detalles , a charming bookstore that also has a cafe with lots of books and interesting things on the shelves.

Calle Mina in Barrio Antigua is closed off to traffic on Sundays and transforms into the Corredor del Arte . It’s a fun, outdoor market with antiques, crafts, and all sorts of little things to discover. The whole neighborhood comes alive, and locals come here to find special items like second-hand clothes, old records, and antique home items.

Walking further south to Calle Jardón , you’ll find one antique shop after another. One of them is D’Michaus Antiques , which is like a treasure trove of metal items, bronze sculptures, old paintings, and comfy old leather chairs.

Cabrito , a beloved culinary treasure of Monterrey, is a regional specialty that has gained fame both within Mexico and around the world. At its core, cabrito is a young goat slow-roasted over an open fire to perfection. The meat is usually seasoned with a blend of spices, including achiote or annatto for a hint of color and earthy taste.

The best place to try cabrito in Monterrey is El Rey del Cabrito , in the southern end of Barrio Antiguo. This bizarre yet entertaining spot has a kitschy design; its interiors are adorned with cowboy outfits and black-and-white photos. But its food is unrivaled and portions are huge! The star of the show here is cabrito al pastor (roast kid goat), served with tortillas, totopos, different sauces and broth. You can see the goat meat being slow-roasted over an open flame by the main entrance.

Head back to Macroplaza and continue walking a few minutes northwards, and you’ll come across the Esplanada de los Héroes , a stately promenade adorned with monuments honoring revered Mexican figures, including Miguel Hidalgo and Benito Juárez.

This splendid esplanade overlooks the imposing Palacio de Gobierno , a government palace bedecked with resplendent stained-glass windows. Dating back to 1908, the stunning neoclassical Palacio de Gobernio is the longtime seat of state politics. It’s also home to the  Museo del Palacio , which is sadly temporarily closed for restoration. Check its official website for updates of when it’ll reopen.

If you only have time for one museum, make it the Mexican History Museum which is just a hop from the Palacio de Gobierno. Poised by the fountains and inviting pools of Plaza 400 Años, the Museo de Historia Mexicana is a multi-level, modern museum that brings you on a journey through Mexican history, spanning from the pre-Hispanic era to the 20th century.

Within its halls, over 1200 artifacts stand on proud display, including venerable Olmec stone heads and an authentic locomotive. Your admission also grants you access to the Museo del Noreste (read next point), seamlessly connected to its counterpart via a striking glass-enclosed bridge.

Next door stands the Museo del Noreste (MUNE), an equally fascinating museum that delves into the history, traditions, and multicultural aspects of northeastern Mexico. It’s a great place to learn about the region’s indigenous heritage and its role in shaping Mexico’s history.

Its permanent installation focuses on regional history that includes the states of Nuevo León, Coahuila, Tamaulipas and Texas, from present day to remote times. The visit becomes a downward journey through different stages of history through intermediate floors or mezzanines connected by ramps.

Both museums mentioned are located along the modern riverside promenade, Paseo Santa Lucía . The boardwalk was built in 2007, as part of the celebration of the Universal Forum of Cultures Monterrey. Stretches for approximately 2.5 kilometers (1.5 miles) along the Santa Lucía River, the promenade meanders through the city’s downtown area up to the beautiful green lungs of the city, Parque Fundidora.

Take a leisurely walk along the pathway, where you can admire art installations and sculptures, cross several pedestrian bridges and see man-made waterfalls along the way. The riverwalk is also lined with cafes and restaurants, with outdoor tables that spill out onto the walkway. Restaurante Tenerias has the best spot, with the perfect setting for a romantic dinner.

paseo santa lucia - monterrey mexico attractions

A popular way to soak up the beauty of Santa Lucia River is to catch a boat from the Fountain of Life (Fuente de la Vida) in the center of the Plaza 400 Años right by the Mexican History Museum. A return journey on the boat costs 100 MXN (US$5) and it takes around 30 minutes to go from Fuente de la Vida to Parque Fundidora. You can get tickets right by the fountain.

But be prepared for potential waits, particularly on bustling weekends. I had to wait for 30 minutes to board the boat, and actually wished I’d just strolled along Paseo Santa Lucia. Still, it was a very relaxing way to float on the river and see the city from the water’s perspective.

things to do in monterrey - boat ride

At the easternmost point of the Paseo Santa Lucía promenade lies Parque Fundidora, an expansive green oasis that has breathed new life into what was once an industrial wasteland . Today, a network of jogging trails and bike lanes crisscross this park, affording stunning vistas of the iconic Cerro de la Silla mountain. There’s so much to do in this massive park that you can easily spend the entire day here.

Rent a bicycle (40 MXN or US$2 per hour) to explore the sprawling green space or hire a rowboat to glide across the park’s tranquil lake. Parque Fundidora is also home to several museums and eco-adventure parks, including Expedición Amazonia Park. Parque Amazonia has a whole plethora of activities, ranging from ziplining to bungee-jumping and an obstacle rope course.

things to do in monterrey - parque fundidora

Amongst the plethora of museums you can find in Parque Fundidora, the Horno3 Museum is the most impressive! This former steel blast furnace has been ingeniously transformed into a cutting-edge, interactive museum dedicated to Mexico’s steel industry . The museum promises to captivate visitors from the moment they set foot inside, from the steam-emitting rocks at the entrance to the open-air caged elevator ascending to the summit, offering dramatic panoramas of Monterrey.

The showstopper is the hourly furnace spectacle, projected from the towering Horno3 structure. It includes a live fire show as well as a fun and informative presentation on the history of Monterrey’s steel-making industry. Try to visit on a weekend if you want to go zip-lining and rappelling from the tower’s apex (you’ll need to book in advance).

On the museum’s rooftop is the contemporary cafe and restaurant, El Lingote , offering creative fusion cuisine and craft beer selection, all while providing breathtaking views of the surrounding park.

Also located within the greenery of Parque Fundidora, Arena Monterrey is the city’s biggest indoor stadium, celebrated for its striking architectural design and versatility. With a seating capacity of 17,599, the arena serves as a premier venue for all kinds of national and international sports, national and international cultural events, conventions and exhibitions. Michael Bublé, Sam Smith, and Evanescence have all performed in the arena.

In the city center, the vibrant Zona Rosa is a modern district to the west of Macroplaza, crisscrossed with pedestrianized shopping streets. It’s a great area to go for a stroll, people-watch, and stop by the many cafes for a coffee. One of the biggest malls in this area is Galerías Monterrey, where you’ll find a wide range of international and local brands.

Zona Rosa also has its share of cultural attractions, including the Pinacoteca de Nuevo León , an art museum featuring works by regional artists. If you’re interested in contemporary art, be sure to check out the galleries showcasing local talent.

San Pedro Garza García, commonly referred to as San Pedro, is one of the wealthiest areas in the whole of Mexico . In San Pedro, you’ll find wide, tree-lined avenues, upscale shopping centers, and an array of gourmet restaurants and cafes. It’s a hub of business and commerce, housing numerous corporate offices and serving as a significant financial center in Mexico.

San Pedro embraces its cultural and artistic side with a variety of galleries, museums, and cultural centers. The Museo del Vidrio (Glass Museum) is a standout attraction, showcasing the artistry and craftsmanship of glassblowing in the region. The district is also backed by beautiful pinetree forests and the Chipinque Ecopark.

One of the best things to do in Monterrey at night is to check out the bars in Barrio Antiguo. In the evening, Barrio Antiguo truly comes alive with many quirky bars and eclectic nightclubs. My local friend brought me to Almacén 42 , a super cool bar made from shipping containers, and we had a great time drinking beer and watching the live band. The bar offers 42 different craft beers from all over Mexico and a tasty menu with snacks and tacos to share.

Right across the street is La Oveja Negra Taverna , a place that serves German beers and delicious German food like bratwurst and roasted pork knuckle. Nearby, Cafe Iguana is a famous nightclub where many famous bands have played. They cover different types of music and are at the center of Monterrey’s alternative music scene.

For the best views of Monterrey, head to Cerro del Obispado , located just west of downtown and reachable by car. The hill stands at a mere 2542 feet (775m) above sea level, but once you reach the top, it feels way higher than that.

A spacious circular lookout point stands at the summit of the hill, offering breathtaking 360-degree panoramas of the cityscape and the enveloping Sierra Madre Oriental mountain range. Dominating the center of this Mirador del Obispado is Mexico’s largest monumental flag , proudly displayed on a towering 100-meter pole.

This spot comes alive on Mexico’s Independence Day, serving as the stage for lively dance performances, captivating light shows, and dazzling fireworks. Additionally, visitors will find convenient amenities at the park entrance, including a parking lot, benches, and restroom facilities.

Directly below the lookout is the Palacio del Obispado, a striking mustard-yellow structure originally constructed to house the seat of religious authority in Nuevo León. In 1902, President Porfirio Díaz repurposed the building, transforming it into the Museo Regional de Nuevo León El Obispado , which officially opened its doors in 1952.

Today, the museum showcases a compelling collection of artifacts, with a focus on the building’s rich religious history, providing visitors with a fascinating glimpse into the past. It’s free to enter, you just need to leave your name in the guestbook.

Things to Do Around Monterrey

Cerro de la Silla is one of Monterrey’s iconic mountains and one of the most popular spots to go hiking. Named after a saddle due to the strong resemblance, Cerro de la Silla has a peculiar shape around its peaks. The mountain has 4 main peaks, the highest being North Peak at a height of 5970 feet (1819m).

Hiking Cerro de la Silla can range from moderate to challenging, depending on the trail you choose. The two most common routes are the “La Antena” trail and the “La Virgen” trail. Both trails begin at the same trailhead, which is located in the Parque La Huasteca, on the eastern outskirts of Monterrey.

  • La Antena Trail is the easier and more popular route, covering 4 to 5 kilometers (2.5 to 3 miles) one-way. The round trip usually takes around 4 to 5 hours. While it involves steep sections and uneven terrain, it doesn’t require technical climbing skills.
  • L a Virgen Trail is shorter, around 2-3 km (1.2 to 1.8 miles) one way, but this trail is more challenging and it can take 4 hours or more for the round-trip looper. It involves steeper inclines, rocky sections, and some scrambling.

tourist places in monterrey mexico

For an invigorating morning adventure, head straight to Parque Ecológico Chipinque , just 19 km (11 miles) outside the city. Situated on the southern fringes of the city, it’s a short, albeit steep, 15-minute drive from the immaculate streets of the upscale San Pedro district. Several hiking and mountain biking trails weave through dense deciduous forests and ascend to rocky summits, including the 2,200-meter-high Copete de Aguilas . I took just 1 hour to hike up from the park entrance to the mesilla (plateau).

Doing a morning hike to Chipinque is one of the most popular things to do in Monterrey, especially for locals. It does get crowded on weekends, so make sure to come early. The visitor center provides invaluable resources, including maps, trail guidance, and permits. A word of warning: the area is home to a population of black bear s, and sightings are not uncommon. Avoid solo hikes or deviating from designated paths.

Entry tickets (M$70) must be purchased online in advance. To reach Chipinque, catch bus 130 from the junction of Vasconcelos and Gómez in the San Pedro area or opt for an Uber ride from downtown, typically costing no more than M$150.

things to do in monterrey - hiking in chipinque

For those seeking an adrenaline rush, I recommend heading to Parque Ecológico Huasteca awaits just 16 km (10 miles) west of the city center, in the outskirts of Santa Catarina district. In contrast to Chipinque, Huasteca showcases colossal limestone spires that pierce the sky, standing above the dizzying walls of the Cañón de la Huasteca. These walls, adorned with prehistoric glyphs crafted millennia ago, recount the enduring pilgrimage of the Huichol people over countless generations.

Today, La Huasteca beckons rock climbers and avid hikers with a diverse selection of climbing routes, ranging from beginner-friendly to advanced circuits, attracting enthusiasts from across the globe. Accessible via bus 505 from Avenida Doctor Ignacio Morones Prieto or a convenient Uber ride (around M$200 each way from the city center).

Approximately 64 km (40 miles) northwest of downtown Monterrey lies one of Mexico’s most extraordinary cave systems, the Grutas de García . Stretching for over 3.5 km (2 miles) within the Sierra del Fraile, these caves trace their origin to nearly 60 million years ago when they lay submerged beneath the sea. If you look carefully, you can still see marine fossils embedded in the cave walls, evidence of their ancient aquatic history.

The easiest way to get to the cave is on the scenic teleférico (aerial tramway), that ascends 750 meters and reaches the cave in just five minutes. But it’s temporarily closed for maintenance. Alternatively, a manageable 1.5-kilometer hike along a well-paved path serves as an option. If you’re traveling solo, it’s wise to book a day tour so you’ll have a guide and you won’t be hiking solo.

Upon entering the cave, two paths await exploration: one extending 2.5 kilometers through 16 distinct chambers; while the other, a shorter route of 1 kilometer, leads to 11 chambers. Both routes unveil equally remarkable, vast chambers adorned with stalactites and stalagmites. Highlights include “ la Octava Maravilla ” (the Eighth Wonder), an immense column formed by the fusion of a stalagmite and stalactite, and “ el Mirador de la mano “, a stalagmite resembling a colossal, gnarled hand.

If you’re not the outdoorsy type and want to explore the more cultural side of Mexico, here’s a day trip worth doing to experience the charm of a small Mexican town. You can easily book a half-day tour to visit both Santiago and Cola de Caballo waterfall (one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Mexico ).

Located approximately 40 km (25 miles) south of Monterrey, Santiago is a pueblo mágico (magic town) with a quaint small-town feel, colonial architecture and cozy restaurants that offer homecooked meals. Its central square is flanked by little shops and cafes. I had lunch at La Casa de la Abuela with my friend and I highly recommend a stop here for traditional regional food.

One of the highlights of a day trip to Santiago is the chance to visit the stunning Cola de Caballo waterfall (translates to mean ‘hair of horse’). This natural wonder is a breathtaking sight, with water cascading from a height of 25 meters into a crystal-clear pool below. Santiago is also located next to the Presa Rodrigo Gómez, a reservoir created by a dam. Locals love to come here on weekends for fresh seafood.

Monterrey Travel Guide

Whether you’re visiting Monterrey for a week or a year, I always recommend travelers to buy travel insurance . Having travel insurance has helped me through the times when we lost our luggage, our flights got canceled/delayed, and when we had our valuables stolen. You never know what’s going to happen, so it’s always wise to have insurance. Read my guide to getting travel insurance .

Safety Wing  is the most popular travel insurance company for COVID19-coverage. I use their  Nomad Insurance plan , which covers COVID-19 as any other illness as long as it was not contracted before your coverage start date.

Monterrey’s General Mariano Escobedo International Airport (MTY) is a modern and well-connected airport. There are direct flights to Dallas, Houston, Miami, and New York.

It also serves Mexico City, Guadalajara, Cancun and other major cities in Mexico. You can find flights to Monterrey from other airports in Mexico for as cheap as US$50 round-trip. The airport is located approximately 24 kilometers (15 miles) from the city center.

Getting around Monterrey

Monterrey has a pretty decent public transportation system compared to other parts of Mexico. Metro Monterrey has three lines that cover various parts of the city, but it doesn’t reach many parts of the city. While public transportation is cheap, it can take a lot longer than taking a taxi due to the traffic.

Taxis and ride-sharing services like Uber and Didi are widely available in Monterrey. They are safe and relatively inexpensive. I took the Uber everywhere I went in Monterrey and rarely spent more than US$10.

Monterrey is rather spread out, so if you’re planning to tick off all the things to do in Monterrey, renting a car is a viable option. Several car rental companies operate in Monterrey, and the city has well-maintained roads and highways. However, be prepared for traffic congestion during peak hours, and make sure to familiarize yourself with local driving regulations.

I always book my car rental from  Discover Cars  as they offer the best prices and excellent customer service. An  economy rental car in Monterrey  costs just $80 for a whole week, which is  less than $15 a day . The current price for gas is 23.50 MXN (around $1) per liter.

To experience all the things to do in Monterrey, I recommend spending at least 1 week in Monterrey. This will give you enough time to explore the barrio antiguo, visit the museums and galleries, and venture out of the city to go hiking in the surrounding mountains. I spent 5 days in Monterrey and still didn’t feel like it was enough!

Monterrey experiences a semi-arid climate with distinct seasons. Fall (September to November) and spring (March to May) are the best times to visit Monterrey. The weather is pleasant, with mild temperatures ranging from the low 60s to the mid-80s Fahrenheit (15-30°C). Both seasons are ideal for outdoor activities, including hiking and exploring the natural beauty surrounding the city. The parks and landscapes are lush and vibrant during this season.

Summers (June to August) can be hot and dry, with daytime temperatures often exceeding 90°F (32°C) and occasional thunderstorms. Winter is the coolest season in Monterrey, with temperatures ranging from the low 40s to the mid-60s Fahrenheit (5-20°C). While it’s not as cold as some other parts of Mexico like Copper Canyon , Monterrey can experience chilly evenings, especially in December and January.

Monterrey was battling drug wars as recently as 2012. However, the city has made significant strides in improving its safety situation in recent years and crime rates have dropped substantially. The efforts to enhance safety and security in Monterrey include increased police presence, improved surveillance systems, and collaborations with local communities. Today, it’s become one of the safest cities in Mexico , according to statistics.

Always stay updated on local advisories, follow guidelines from official sources, and avoid risky areas, particularly at night. I’ve included only the safe areas in this list of things to do in Monterrey. The main area to steer clear of is the crime-plagued barrio of Colonia Independence, across the highway from centro .

Hotels in Monterrey are incredibly affordable and provide amazing value. You can stay in a four-star hotel in the city center for less than US$80/night. I definitely recommend staying in the city center where you can explore the historic sites and downtown attractions on foot.

For a luxurious experience, Safi Royal Luxury Valle offers elegant rooms and suites, a spa, fitness center, and multiple dining options. It’s located in the affluent San Pedro Garza García district, known for its upscale shopping and dining. Check rates here.

Exhibitions at MARCO

tourist places in monterrey mexico

The Museo de Arte Contemporáneo – or MARCO – features almost a dozen galleries of the best modern art from around the world. Homegrown Mexican artists and globally-renowned talents display their works in the museum’s modest permanent and generous temporary exhibitions. Visitors are welcomed by celebrated artist Juan Soriano’s large bronze dove monument perched at the museum’s entrance. The interior of the building has been designed with light and water elements to make each space as creative and inspiring as the artwork it showcases.

Where better to begin exploring Monterrey than in the city’s center square? The Macroplaza, within walking distance of many popular attractions on our list (including the MARCO and Palacio del Obispado) is ostensibly the largest public square in the world. The 230ft (70m) Faro del Comercio structure is the easiest landmark to spot, especially at night when it shoots out green lasers. Use the Explanada de los Héroes or the Neptune Fountain as a central meeting point where you can begin and end your day touring the city.

Palacio del Obispado and Mirador Asta Bandera

The Cerro del Obispado is the site of two of Monterrey’s most popular attractions: the Palacio del Obispado and the Mirador Asta Bandera . The former Bishop’s Palace is an 18th-century relic which the Museo Regional de Nuevo León now calls home. After learning about Mexican history, visitors can make the short trip to the Mirador Asta Bandera where walking trails and a carousel await, to give adults and children a moment to appreciate a superb view of the city.

Cerro de la Silla

Though you can view Monterrey’s most famous peak from the Obispado’s Mirador, why not get as close as possible with a hike? Cerro de la Silla (Saddle Hill) reaches 6,000ft (1,820m) into the sky. An hour’s hike up a rather steep incline will reward you with a fantastic view of the city – though experienced hikers are free to continue climbing another few hours to make it to the top.

TEC de Monterrey

tourist places in monterrey mexico

TEC de Monterrey’s Eugenio Garza Sada campus is a stunning sight, especially for those with an eye for architecture. The square brick buildings were seemingly dropped into the ground – or perhaps they rose into the sky, not unlike the mountains behind them. Regardless, these structures bring beauty and brains to the table: TEC de Monterrey is one of the top-ranked private universities on the planet. Plus they’ve got a good athletics reputation – so be sure to catch a football game when in town.

Paseo Santa Lucía

Although it’s an artificial river, the Paseo Santa Lucía only enhances the natural beauty that surrounds Monterrey. The teal water and white pathways lounge comfortably against the blue sky and green mountains in the distance. This riverwalk is easily one of the most peaceful places in the city, winding 2mi (3km) from Fundidora Park to the Macroplaza. Consider it an easily accessible thoroughfare as you meander through Monterrey, but don’t wander too quickly: the cafes, art installations and patches of green space will tempt you to sit in serenity and stay awhile.

Parque Fundidora

tourist places in monterrey mexico

The history of Monterrey’s steel industry is forged in an interactive, entertaining and thrilling experience at Parque Fundidora . This former foundry is now a unique family-friendly destination connected to the Macroplaza via the Santa Lucía Riverwalk. A water park, theme park, art facility, and playgrounds are just a few of the park’s attractions. Airy green spaces and striking steel structures create a beautiful space to enjoy a picnic beneath the Mexican sun. Though one could easily spend the entire day in the park, a quick afternoon walk through Parque Fundidora is enough to discover one of Monterrey’s most creative spaces.

Ride to the top of Horno3

The Museo del Acero Horno3 is a hands-on museum showcasing Monterrey’s industrial past. History buffs, engineers and the intellectually curious will love learning about the steelmaking process. The 230ft (70m) Horno3 blast furnace puts on a fiery show each night before allowing visitors the opportunity to take a ride up to a viewing platform for spectacular sights of Monterrey. On the weekends, the steel structure turns into a jungle gym with zip lines and rappelling tours available.

Go Ice-skating

Ice-skating in Mexico isn’t as odd as it sounds – and the rink within Parque Fundidora is a smooth way to spend an afternoon. Not only is it a great place to cool down for adult travellers, but it’s also a fun activity that the little ones will love. The ice-skating rink is just one of the many arenas in the Fundidora sports complex, which means solo travellers can use the facility to keep up with their exercise routine while abroad.

Dine in Barrio Antiguo

The old world of Monterrey, just east of the Macroplaza in Barrio Antiguo, is surprisingly modern and designed for a contemporary crowd. This trendy zone lures locals and tourists with its art galleries, shops, nightlife and cafes housed in 17th-century buildings. Casa de los Abuelos hits the spot with local favorites like gorditas and pozole . International fare is also available with Hare Krishna’s Indian buffet and Sabor A Colombia’s South American eats. Torn between options? Indulge in more than two dozen stalls at Mercado Barrio Antiguo.

Grutas de García

tourist places in monterrey mexico

After hitting the streets of Monterrey, explore Nuevo León’s underground in nearby García. The Grutas de García cave system runs beneath the El Fraile mountain within Cumbres de Monterrey National Park. Accessing the caverns requires a cable car ride up the mountain, elevating the experience with astounding views of the countryside. Once inside the grottoes, natural light illuminates the stalactite and stalagmite formations. Guided tours last just under an hour, and anyone can extend their excursion by opting to skip the funicular ride and hike back down into the park.

Try Cabrito

The City of Mountains knows how to serve up a juicy steak, but before ordering up another hunk of beef, we suggest trying cabrito whenever possible. Monterrey’s goat dishes blend Mediterranean ingredients like oregano and tomatoes with Mexican favorites like onions and chilis. Cabrito is prepared every which way: oven-roasted, spit-roasted, braised, grilled and pulled off the bone. Unfortunately, travellers likely won’t stumble upon cabrito at a street side food stall, however, restaurants throughout the city like El Rey del Cabrito and Restaurant los Cabritos Alameda are guaranteed to have it on the menu.

Get Yourself Invited to a Carne Asada

Travellers will find meat on every menu throughout the state of Neuvo León, but the best bite of Monterrey isn’t found at a restaurant. Just as Mexico’s neighbours to the north cherish outdoor barbecues, the locals in Monterrey find any excuse to host a carne asada. This cultural cookout is a celebration in itself and those lucky enough to accept an invitation to one will be treated to grilled steak, quesadillas, fresh salsa, chunky guacamole and plenty of cold beer.

Chipinque Ecological Park

Looking for a quick retreat into the Cumbres de Monterrey National Park? Chipinque Ecological Park offers ease of access from downtown to the Sierra Madre foothills. More than 37mi (60km) of trails for mountain biking and hiking let you explore the rocky peaks and dense forests to your heart’s desire. Secluded lookouts and scenic views follow your climb up to the 7,336ft (2,236m) peak of Copete de las Aguilas where you’ll gaze over Monterrey’s skyline. Not interested in huffing it for a photo op? Visitors can drive to many of the lookouts without breaking a sweat.

Is Monterrey Mexico safe?

As with any other big city in the world, Monterrey, with almost 5 million people , you should always watch where you’re going and what you’re planning to do.

As I always say, you may find trouble if you look for trouble.

There was a time between 2007 and 2012 when Monterrey was caught in the crossfire of the so-called narco war, making things shaky for public safety in the entire northern Mexican territory.

Nevertheless, the three times I went there (2008, 2012, 2018) , I never experienced any problems.

Again, always be careful no matter where you go, and trust no one. Try not to wear flashy things if you happen to be by yourself walking the streets.

I hope you enjoy touring Monterrey Mexico as much as I once did.

Should you have any questions, please let me know. And please share your experiences with us in the comment section below. Vamonos!

During the week, visitors must use their own vehicle to drive through the safari park, but a Masai truck will transport guests through the park on the weekends.

Visitors can interact with and get close to many animals from the comfort of their vehicles.

Animals on the safari include zebras, camels, giraffes, water buffalo, bison, white-tailed deer, watusi, emus, alpacas, antelope, ostrich and llamas.

Hippos, pythons and iguanas are among the animals found in the exhibits.

The park offers transportation from downtown Monterrey to the park and back on weekends.

Monterrey, Mexico Travel Guide: The Best Hikes in Monterrey, Mexico

Monterrey is the capital city of Nuevo Leon, located in North East Mexico, and is known as “the king of mountains”. Despite it being a cosmopolitan city rich with history, culture and tradition – it is most renowned for the landscapes it is surrounded by. It sits in the foothills of the Sierra Madre Oriental mountain range and within a mere 10 minute drive from the centre you can be immersed in natural beauty. It has some of the most dramatic landscapes I have ever seen with soaring peaks, unique caves and sheer rock faces scattered with hiking trails.

The best bit? Monterrey is not yet a well known tourist destination and when we visited we met a grand total of zero other international visitors. So if you’re looking to get off the beaten path and experience Mexico’s mountains without the crowds, this is the destination for you. This Monterrey Travel Guide will provide you with practical information as well as the best hikes.

tourist places in monterrey mexico

The Practicalities:

Getting there & getting around:.

There is a large international airport in Monterrey. We used Uber, authorised taxis and tours to get around the city, but if you want more freedom then rental cars are readily available.

How Long To Stay:

You can see the highlights of Monterrey in 3-4 full days, if you stay a little longer you can travel to further away attractions such as El Puerto Chico and Cascada Chipitin.

Where To Stay:

I recommend basing yourself in central Monterrey in the area called Barrio Antigua. It is the most picturesque neighbourhood which is within walking distance of many of the cities attractions.

When To Go:

Monterrey has different activities for different seasons. For hiking the best months are late October to mid December and early April through to late May. If you want to try the world famous canyoning then visit in the summer months of June to August, but it will most likely be too hot to hike.

Monterrey is known to be the richest city in Mexico, but since it is not a well known tourist destination it is still significantly more affordable than more popular regions such as Tulum.

Travel Tips:

Water . Do not drink the local water. Drink bottled water (buy large gallons and decant into reusable bottles to reduce plastic consumption). Avoid salads washed in local water, stick to cooked foods and ask for cold drinks without ice. Take some immodium with you.

Language . The most dominant language in Mexico is Spanish and many locals do not speak English. Do yourself a favour and learn the basics to help you get by. It is also useful to have google translate on hand to assist, for example with translating menus which are often in Spanish.

Safety . In general, Monterrey is a safe place as long as you keep your wits about you and take basic precautions. Click here for a Mexico safety guide.

Cash . It is wise to carry a small amount of cash with you as not everywhere takes card, the local currency is Pesos.

Phones . I recommend purchasing a local SIM card to get the best phone coverage at the most affordable price.

tourist places in monterrey mexico

Hiking in Monterrey:

There are four key areas to hike in monterrey:.

  • Chipinique Ecological Park
  • La Huasteca Ecological Park (my favourite!)
  • Cerro de las Mitras
  • Cerra de la Silla

There are a couple of things to keep in mind before you go hiking in Monterrey.

  • Most of the hikes are challenging. I didn’t encounter any “easy” or even “moderate” hikes in Monterrey. The trails are often steep, long and tough on the mind and body. This is not a destination for hiking newbies or those who lack physical fitness.
  • During many of the hikes you will need to do some basic rock climbing and/or scrambling to get to the top (not requiring equipment), so ensure you are confident with this.
  • Permits and passes are required for some of the parks. These can be booked in advance, but one way to avoid the admin is by using a local hiking guide. They can organise these for you. Here are a few companies I found who do guided hikes: Hiking Mty , Yeti Adventures and Gaia Xtreme . My top recommendation is Fran from Aventuras Remotas who specialises in rock climbing but also offers guided hikes.

tourist places in monterrey mexico

The Best Hikes in Monterrey:

El nido aka the nest of the eagle.

This was the highlight of our time in Monterrey and an adventure you definitely need an experienced and trusted guide for. You hike up to the base of the mountains in La Huasteca and then do some simple rock climbing up to a height of 1250m. The route takes on narrow ridges with steep drops on either side so you definitely need a head for heights. Once you reach the top you descend through a series of three rappels, including one which free falls into a cave. It is an incredible mental and physical challenge, one which rewards you with some of the most stunning views in the region. If you can, try to climb up during sunrise. The tour took us five hours from 6am to 11am, but if you go with a group it can take longer.

Cerro de la Silla

Cerro de la Silla is perhaps the most iconic mountain and hike in the whole of Monterrey. There are a selection of trails you can take to reach its four different peaks and range of viewpoints. The most popular is to Antenas (a 10km round trip with 1100m elevation gain) but if you want to push yourself even further, you can go with a mountain guide up to Pico Norte.

This peak in Chipinique Ecological Park is one I recommend conquering with a guide. It is a long and challenging ascent with simple rock climbing required as you get close to the 2200 metre high summit. You will be rewarded with the best views (in my personal opinion) of Monterrey and the surrounding area. It is a truly incredible 360 degree panorama. It is around a 9km round trip with over 1000m elevation gain which takes anything from 5-8 hours depending on your speed.

Psst. If you want another challenge there is also The Tuft Of The Eagles nearby. This is a hike of similar terrain length and difficulty in Chipinique which takes you to the highest peak in Monterrey.

Pico Horcones

This hike  is one you could easily do without a guide. It is still fairly strenuous but requires minimal technical skill, with only a short easy rock climb near the summit. Compared to La M and Cerro de la Silla the elevation gain is significantly less, at 619m over the course of a 6.5km route. At the top you will have stunning 360 degree views of the city, La Huasteca Ecological Park and the surrounding mountains.

Pico Perico

A guide is recommended for this hike as there are narrow ridge walks and steep rock climbs using chains and cables. The trail is diverse, passing through forests, over rocks and across streams. The peak itself is 1980m tall and the third highest in Monterrey, so it is a pretty challenging hike up to the top. Of course, as always you are rewarded with mind blowing views over the city and mountains so it is well worth the sweat!

The Cave of the Virgin

Nestled into the rock faces of La Huasteca is this famous and beautiful cave, which can be conquered in two ways. You can either hike and climb up from the base of the mountain without any equipment, which is what we did with our guide, or you can integrate it into a rappelling adventure. If you choose to rappel (with an experienced and trusted professional) then there will be a hike, some simple climbing and three rappels – taking roughly 5-8 hours depending on your speed and the size of your group.

If you’re short on time and want a quick but satisfying hike then this is for you.  La Raya  is a 2km out and back trail with only 200m elevation gain, so it is basically a short steep climb up to a stunning viewpoint. The only downside is that because it is so accessible, there is a lot of graffiti on the rocks and rubbish on the trails. If you have the energy, I would recommend taking on one of the more challenging hikes in the region.

Other Adventures:

Beyond hiking, Monterrey is also a great base for a whole host of adventurous activities. If you have time then add these to your bucket list:

  • Canyoning . In the summer months Monterrey is on the doorstep of some of the most renowned canyoning experiences in the whole of Latin America. Matacanes is probably the most famous canyon you can take on, with a 12km route taking in caves, underground rivers, waterfalls, natural slides and rappelling. It is considered mother nature’s water park! Other popular canyoning spots include Hidrofobia and Chipitin.
  • Paragliding . Monterrey is an amazing destination for paragliding, with numerous peaks you can launch from. We even met some base jumpers in the mountains!
  • Rock Climbing . An hour or so’s drive away is the world famous La Potrero Chico, the rock climbing capital of Mexico. If you want to take your climbing skills to the next level and immerse yourself in the climbing community, this is the place to do it.
  • Waterfalls. There are a handful of waterfalls near to Monterrey. The closest notable one is Cascada Cola de Caballo which is 27 metres tall, but the most dramatic waterfall takes a bit of work to get to. A couple of hours drive away is the incredible Cascada Chipitin, one of the most beautiful waterfalls in northern Mexico. You can visit the waterfall as part of a multi-day canyoning trip as Matacanes is nearby.

What Else To See & Do In Monterrey :

If your legs need a break from all the hiking then the city of Monterrey has a whole range of other attractions you can experience. Give these a go:

  • My top recommendation: Explore the old Spanish Quarter, Barrio Antiguo, which is full of colour and character.
  • The Museums. The Museum of Contemporary Art and The Mexican History Museum.
  • The Metropolitan Cathedral Of Our Lady of Monterrey.
  • Monterrey Macroplaza. Including the Government Palace and the Neptune Fountain.
  • The Santa Lucia Riverwalk.

Somehow Monterrey has managed to stay under the tourist radar until now but I don’t know how much longer it will remain such a little known spot for outdoor lovers. (Sorry for letting the cat out the bag!). I recommend visiting this incredible destination when you can so you are able to explore its abundance of natural beauty without the crowds. It is truly a hidden gem in Mexico’s crown!

If you are planning an extended trip to Mexico to explore other less known spots, you may want to take a look at my Travel Guide to Chipas .
