History & Story

So, as most of you might be knowing, Krishna was born in Mathura and from there, Vasudev Ji (his father) crossed the Yamuna and left the baby Krishna at his friend Nanda Baba's home in Gokul. Krishna was lovingly raised by Nanda Baba and Yashoda Maiya. When He became a bit grown up, He directed the information to Kans that it is nobody other than Him who is destined to kill Kans.

Upon hearing this, evil Kans burned the entire village of Gokul in a hope to burn Krishna, and eventually kill his death. Krishna has already made His plans, and before the army of Kans were about to burn Gokul, Krishna convinced Nanda Baba to go and take shelter at Vrishbanu Baba's village Barsana. It was all a pastime of Krishna to spend time with Srimati Radharani in Barsana and perform His divine lila's to teach the world prema-bhakti and reclaim the conditioned souls to go back home, back to godhead Goloka Vrindavan.

From there, Vrishabhanu Baba gifted the Gokulvasis the holy land of Vrindavan, which became the place where Radharani and Krishna perform the nitya transcendental lilas. Vrindavan attracts all sincere seekers and colours them with the inner confidential love of prema-bhakti that is extremely rare and not even accessible to yogis, siddha saints, tapasvis and even demi-gods like Shiva Ji and Brahma Ji.

• Do not give them any amount above 60-70 bucks for any place as once they sense that you are coming for the first time, they will quote big astronomical amounts.

Bike for rent in Vrindavan

If you are just a couple of people, or in multiples of 2, you can rent a bike from Srila Prabhupada Emporium at Hare Krishna Residency, just near to the Bonraj Maharaj College and on the adjacent side of Main Gate of ISKCON Temple. They will take a security deposit of 1000 rupees, and will charge 500 rupees for Activa scooter and bikes. The advantage you will get is that you can go to any place around Vrindavan easily. Also, you can quickly visit Mathura, Barsana, Govardhan, Radha Kund easily. If you are good with using Google Maps, I would highly advise you to rent a bike or scooter to have a further great experience.

Though, please note that there are some instances of bike theft in Vrindavan, hence make sure that you park it securely or at parking only. Don't leave the bike at any random place for a longer period of time.

Must-do activities in Vrindavan

I would highly suggest any devotee or tourist coming to Vrindavan to make sure to participate in the below mentioned devotional activities.

Yamuna Boat Ride

Visit Kesi Ghat and take a boat ride. There are many boats there and they usually charge an arbitrary amount once they get a feel that you are a tourist so do not forget to negotiate with them. The ideal price would be 150 or 200 bucks for a 20-30 minute ride duration. It is a wonderful experience to witness the ghat from the waters of Yamuna Maharani as Keshi Ghat retains that traditional vintage vibe. If possible, do take Yamuna Snan or take achman if you are unable to take snan (bath).

Kirtan at ISKCON

There is a fully charged up enthusiastic kirtan at ISKCON Krishna Balarama Mandir 24 hours a day. It has been going on since 1986. It was re-established by Sripad Aindra Prabhu . You just step inside the temple hall and automatically get engaged in the Harinam Sankirtana. This is the final conclusion of all Vedic Scriptures. Harer Nama Eva Kevalam i.e. in Kali Yuga, there is nothing except Harinam for the deliverance of fallen conditioned souls.

Banke Bihari Darshan

The darshan at Banke Bihari Mandir is a tad different as the curtain opens and closes every alternate 10-30 seconds. The deities of Banke Bihari Ji just create a powerful impression on the viewer. You will witness a different experience here.

Yamuna Arti

Evening arti at Keshi Ghat on banks of Yamuna Maharani is flocked by devotees worldwide. There is a grand arti and you just get engaged in the festivities there. It starts at 5.30 and sometimes at 6 PM. Though, be careful not to wear spectacles there as monkeys can snatch it very easily. Also, be aware not to speak to anyone local or dicey here and do keep your mobile and wallet safe.

Chant Hare Krishna Mahamantra internally

Vrindavan Parikrama

A lot of devotees do Vrindavan Parikrama around Vrindavan (Parikrama means walking around in circle i.e starting and ending at the same place). It is a 13 KM walk around the circumference of Vrindavan Dham. By circumambulating Vrindavan once, you get the result of circumambulating all the temples in Vrindavan. It is said that all offences are destroyed by doing Vrindavan Parikrama.

One should keep chanting Hare Krishna Mahamantra while doing Vrindavan Parikrama and keep praying for a direction to vraja-prema-bhakti . A lot of devotees do parikrama on Ekadashi.

The natural scenic beauty on the 13 KM path is something that will linger in your memory for a long time and will make you very blissful internally. A good part of Vrindavan Parikrama route is untouched by modern buildings and retains that traditional feel with lots of greenery, peacocks, cows and parrots around.

Special Festivals celebrated in Vrindavan

Holi is celebrated with a lot of vigour and excitement. It is popularly celebrated at Banke Bihari Mandir, Radha Ramana Mandir, Radha Vallabha Mandir and around Loi Bazar with more enthusiasm. Janmashtami

Janmashtami sees a huge rush of pilgrims, and especially from nearby regions of Delhi and Rajashtan. All the mandirs are decorated no less than royal palaces and there is an extreme amount of fervours, glitz and euphoria surrounding the festivities of Janmashtami. A lot of religious ceremonies including kirtan, prasad distribution, yagyas happens at every other corner in Vrindavan. It is a joy to be here in Janmashtami and visit the temples here.

Radhastami is celebrated with more enthusiasm than Janamashtami as it is the appearance day of Queen of Vrindavan, Srimati Radharani, the personification of love of Sri Krishna. Everywhere, you see a lot of happiness, pujas and big feasts going on.

Kartik (every year)

Kartik usually falls from mid-October and mid-November every year. Kartik is also known as Damodar Mas. It is the month of Radharani and it bestows 1000 times more bhakti than any normal time of the year. This Kartik period is when Vrindavan is crowded to the core and it is almost impossible to find hotels for overnight stay. Thousands of devotees visit here on a daily basis and it is full of buzz and super high enthusiasm during Kartik. One must make it a point to come to Vrindavan every Kartik regardless of anything. it bestows thousands of times spiritual credits and sincere seekers really get direction and answers quickly in the quest of vraja-prema bhakti .

Important festivals celebrated in Kartik are Sharad Purnima, Radha Kund Appearance Day, Govardhan Puja, Diwali, Damodar Lila, Tulsi Vivah etc.

Purusottam (every 2.5 years)

Purusottam, also know as mal mas is considered as the top-most month to leave all work and just meditate on the Purustoamm Lord, or Sri Krishna with full heart and soul. It bestows 100000 times the benefit of doing bhakti on any other day. Thousands of devotees do Vrindavan Parikrama every day during Purusottam Maas. Bhandirvan is located 21 KM from Vrindavan and is the place where Radharani and Krishna got married. Though this marriage was not in front of the entire world and was extremely confidential. Vamshivat is hardly 5-minute drive from the main temple at Bhandirvan.

Raval is about 20 KM from Vrindavan and is the place where Radharani was born. The main mandir is very less visited by and the darshan of little Radharani is a treat for the devotees. Also, there is a garden just opposite the main temple where two trees are together wrapped in each other, one being black and the other being white in colour. Locals say that the white tree represents Radharani and the black one depicts Krishna.

Nandgaon is located at a distance of 48 KM from Vrindavan. It about 6 KM from Barsana. Krishna lived here after the Gokulvasis came to take shelter at Barsana as Gokul was burnt by Kans. It was all a plan by Krishna so as to arrange meetings with Radharani regularly. Later, Vrisbhanu Baba gifted the land of Vrindavan to Gokulvasis to establish their new village.

Prem Mandir is one of the latest temples in Vrindavan dedicated to Lord Sri Krishna. The temple structure was established by spiritual guru Kripalu Maharaj. The foundation stone laid on January 2001 and the temple was opened to public on 17th February 2012. The cost of the construction was around 150 crore rupees. Sri Ranganatha Temple / Rangaji Temple

At a distance of 1.5 km from Vrindavan Railway Station, Sri Ranganath or Rangaji Temple is one of the biggest temples in the region. It is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and his consort Lakshmi. Sri Radha Damodar Mandir

At a distance of 1 km from Vrindavan Railway Station, Sri Radha Damodar Mandir is an ancient temple situated at Loi Bazar near Seva Kunj in Vrindavan. 1. Govind Deo Temple

Located at a distance of a kilometre from the Vrindavan Railway Station is the Govind Deo Temple also popularly known as Govind Dev Ji Temple. It is one of the most important tourist attractions in the town. Govind Deo Temple was constructed by the King of Amber, Raja Man Singh in the year of 1590.

The architecture of this temple is unique as it is an amalgamation of the Hindu, Muslim, and Western style. It is made of red sandstone and is designed after the Greek cross symbol. A total of INR 10 million was spent in the construction of this temple. The temple rises up to seven stories and is dedicated to the worship of Govind, another name for Lord Krishna.

The temple underwent significant destruction following the attack by Aurangzeb in the year 1670, because of which the temple is only 3-storied now. Due to the severe destruction, most of the temple activities like prayer and puja takes place at a smaller temple situated behind the main temple.

A flight of stairs will lead you to the main hall whose ceiling is adorned with a lotus completely hand sculpted. The inner sanctum is made of silver and marble. The temple witnesses significant footfall during the holy festivals of Janmashtami and Holi.

Visiting hours: Open all days from morning 8:00 am till noon at 12:30 pm and again from 4:30 pm to 8:00 pm.

2. Prem Mandir

One of the largest temples to visit in Vrindavan is the temple of love, or Prem Mandir, dedicated to the worship of Lord Krishna and Goddess Radha. The temple is relatively new, its foundation stone was laid in 2001 and was opened to all by 2012. The construction of this vast temple cost about INR 150 crores. Prem Mandir is spread over a sprawling 54 acres of land.

The temple is a two-storied structure made of marble. The walls of the temple are decked with beautiful paintings depicting the Leela of Radha and Krishna. More than eighty panels on the wall are hand-painted. The inner sanctum of the temple houses the deities Krishna and Radha on the ground floor while the first floor is for Lord Ram and Goddess Sita. 

The whole temple is encircled by a vast garden with multiple flowering plants, fountains, and lights. There are also enormous statues of the gods and goddesses in the gardens- the most popular one being of Rasa Leela.

The temple also organizes a light show every evening, when the white marbles of the temple are prettified with artificial lights while the devotees offer their prayers and sing beautiful bhajans. The light show takes places in the evening from 7:30 until 8:00 in the night.

Visiting hours: Morning 5:30 am till 12:00 pm and 4:30 pm until 8:30 pm.

3. Kesi Ghat

Kesi Ghat is one of the most important ghats in the town situated at the banks of the Yamuna. This is one of the spots visited very early in the morning by tourists and religious devotees alike. It is believed that Lord Krishna took a dip in the waters of the Yamuna after slaying the demon named Keshi; hence this spot is one of the most unique places to see in Vrindavan.

The vast Madanmohan Temple at the back provides a beautiful backdrop while the river meanders ahead. You may also opt for a boat ride here.

4. Banke Bihari Temple

One of the best places to see in Vrindavan is the Banke Bihari Temple dedicated to the worship of Krishna. It is a highly revered spot among tourists and locals alike and witnesses’ heavy footfall at all times of the year from people of all walks of life. Banke Bihari Temple is also one of 7 temples of ‘Thakur of Vrindavan’.

The temple’s architecture is uniquely Rajasthani with arched windows and marvellous sculpted stonework. The idol of Krishna inside the temple is also unique; the figurine depicts the Lord as a child standing in a ‘Tribhanga’ position. The idol of this temple was also worshipped as Kunj Bihari meaning enjoyer of lakes.

The temple has no conch or bells in its premises as it is believed that Lord Krishna does not like the sound of these instruments. People perform chants of Radha Krishna by their voice.

The word “Banke” means bent or twisted at three spots, while Bihari means a cheerful soul. The whole routine of the Lord is also performed differently at three different times of the day known as the Shringar, Rajbhog, and the Shayan. While the Lord is at his Shringar it includes His bath and dressing up; Rajbhog involves a great feast, and Shayan is the time for His rest.

One of the holiest places when it comes to the worship of Lord Krishna, the Banke Bihari Temple is thronged by devotees all throughout the year. This is definitely one of most visited tourist attractions in the city.

5. Nidhivan

Nidhivan, also known as Seva Kunj is a beautiful vast garden situated in Vrindavan. It is one of the most revered places to see in Vrindavan. This place is thronged by people all over the year as many legends are associated with this spot. People believe that Krishna and Radha performed the Rasa Leela in the same garden.

The locals and devotees strongly believe that Lord Krishna comes here every day after it is dark to dance with his Gopis, which is why people are prohibited from entering here after it is dark. The garden houses some Radha-Krishna temples with more than 1500 wild tulsi trees within the premises.

6. ISKCON, Vrindavan

ISKCON, Vrindavan is one of the most popular temples in India . It is also popularly called the Krishna Balaram Mandir. The temple was constructed in the year 1975. The temple is raised with the sole purpose of educating people on the Vedas and the Bhagavad Gita.

The inside of the temple has three altars for the Gods Sri Gaura Nitai, Balaram, Krishna, and Radha Shyamsundar. Upon entering, a vast white marble archway leads to the samadhi of Srila Prabhupada, founder of ISKCON. The temple doors are also gigantic in size and wholly carved from wood. You will be able to witness the beautiful and harmonious music of the prayers, called kirtans, accompanied by harmoniums while the devotees dance to it. There are two prominent divisions inside the temple- the prayer hall or bhajankutir, and the Samadhi hall of Srila Rupa Goswami and many other Goswamis.

Jiva Goswami built a library within the temple premises to store the original manuscripts of the Goswamis. Although the temple lost many of its wonders, there are still some essential religious aspects existing, such as the Govardhana Shila (rock), which has Krishna’s footprints engraved on it.

Visiting hours: Open all days from morning 6:30 am to 12: 30 pm, and from evening 5:00 pm to 9:30 pm at night.

8. Rangaji Temple

Rangaji Temple is one of the most ancient sites to visit in Vrindavan. It was built following the architectural style of the Dravidians in the year 1851.

The temple is dedicated to Lord Ranganatha or Rangaji who is an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. One of the major attractions of the temple is the 50-feet tall Dhwaja Stambha and a six-story-tall Gopuram or the temple entrance tower. Beautiful gardens and a water tank surrounds the temple premise.

Rangaji Temple receives the maximum visitors during the months of March and April for the Brahmotsavam Festival. It is also popularly called Rath Mela when the devotees pull the chariot (rath) of the God to the nearby gardens.

Visiting hours: All days from morning 6:00 am to 11:00 am and from 3:30 pm till 8:30 pm.

More About Vrindavan

Sitting on the banks of the Yamuna River, Vrindavan is an ancient religious town in Uttar Pradesh and one of the oldest cities of this region . It is also the most sacred place of Vaishnavism and an important pilgrimage centre for both Hindus and Vaishnavism. The city sits at 11KM from its sister town Mathura and roughly 200KM from the country capital of New Delhi. The history of this temple dates back to the time of Swami Haridas , a renowned poet and classical musician of the Dvapara Yuga and guru of Tansen. It is believed that when Haridas was once singing a religious verse in Vrindavan for his disciples, Radha and Krishna appeared in front of him. He then asked the couple to merge into one. At his request, Krishna and Radha fused into the form of what we see as Banke Bihari . It is said that the temple houses the same idol that Haridas witnessed.

This temple of the Radha Vallabha tradition was constructed in 1864 and is one of the seven temples of Thakur (Krishna) of Vrindavan, including those of Radhavallabh, Radha Govind, Radha Raman, Radha Madan Mohan, Radha Shyamasundar, and Radha Damodar.

The name Banke Bihari comes from the Devanagari words ‘Bānke’ means ‘bent’, and ‘Bihāri’ or ‘Vihāri’ means ‘ one who enjoys ‘. This is how Krishna, who is bent in three places, got the name “ Bānke Bihāri” .

How to Plan a Trip to Vrindavan

How to reach vrindavan.

The nearest railway terminus is at Mathura Railway Station, 16KM away. There are regular trains to Vrindavan from all major towns and cities in Uttar Pradesh and other parts of India. From Mathura, you have to book a cab or rent a private car to reach Vrindavan.

Vrindavan is well-connected to the rest of Uttar Pradesh and the national capital region via Taj Expressway/Yamuna Expressway, NH 19, and NH 44. There are regular state-run and private buses to Vrindavan from Delhi, Gurgaon, Agra, Mathura, Aligarh, Alwar, Faridabad, Gwalior etc. The best way to travel from either of these places to Vrindavan is to book a cab and do a road trip. A lot of people reach Delhi & book a cab from there to explore Vrindavan and other nearby places.

There is no airport in Vrindavan so the town has no flight connectivity. The nearest airport is in Agra, at Kheria Airport, about 72KM southward. From Agra, you have to take the local buses, book a cab or rent a car to reach Vrindavan by road. The nearest international airport is in New Delhi, 144KM away. There are regular flights available from all major cities and towns in India to both Delhi and Agra. From either of these airports, you have to book an airport taxi from Delhi to reach Vrindavan .

Nidhivan is a beautiful and expansive garden frequently referred to as Seva Kung. It is among the most popular tourist destinations in the Vrindavan region. Govind Dev Temple

Rangaji Temple
