The sole plateau of Kerala derives its name from two words; ‘vayal’ and ‘naad,’ meaning ‘land of the paddy.’ True to its heritage, Wayanad boasts diverse and vast attractions that make it a unique hill station. Splendid waterfalls, wildlife sanctuaries, breathe taking views – Wayanad has it all. One among the least explored of all hill stations in South India, Wayanad is sure to leave you wanting more. 1. lakkidi viewpoint.

On the way to the entrance to Wayanad is the highest view point-the Lakkidi viewpoint. It is located in the curves of the Thamarassery ghat pass, and the viewpoint can be a bit crowded at times. The snake-like roads en route to Wayanad can be seen from the Lakkidi viewpoint. Visitors are advised to look out for the traffic. Lakkidi is one of the most beautiful Wayanad viewpoints.

2. Chain tree

A tree can be a bizarre item in places to see in Wayanad, but a tree full of chains sure is not. Local legends claim a spirit inhabiting this tree, and the locals placed the chains to control the spirit. The spirit is said to be of Karinthandan, a tribal who was betrayed by the British to gain access to the enormous resources of Wayanad. This is one of the major tourist attractions in Wayanad.

3. Pakshipathalam Bird sanctuary

6. Kalpetta

Kalpetta is the main town from which most of the tourist locations of Wayanad are easily accessible. It is to be noted that the tourist places in Wayanad are not close to each other and are pretty spread out. With Kalpetta being the central point, you can access most locations quite easily. At a distance of about 20km from Kalpetta, Soochipara waterfalls in Wayanad are a breathtaking location. The water is flowing in a three-tiered fashion into a pool, creating a plunge pool beneath it. The route to the falls includes short trekking with stone-paved steep stairs leading deep into the adjacent side of the waterfalls. For the elderly, however, the trek back might be a bit challenging. 8. Chembra peak

The 2100m tall Chembra peak is one of the main destinations for trekking enthusiasts. The view of Wayanad and Kodaikanal atop the peak is breathtaking. Trekking hours are regulated from 7AMto 2 PM, and visitors have to complete the trek and return to the entrance by 5 PM. Make sure to obtain permission from forest officials before trekking. 9. Pookot lake

Wayanad is often called as the green paradise in God’s own country “Kerala”. It is a hill station, 700 meters to 2000 meters above sea level, in northern part of Kerala with the mist clad peaks. The place is famous for its scenic beauty, wildlife and traditional concepts.

There are plenty of tourist spots in and around Wayanad. The most famous among them are Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary established in the year 1973. Extremely rich in biodiversity, the sanctuary is an integral part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, which was established for the sole purpose of conserving and protecting the biological heritage of the region. The sanctuary is very rich in flora and fauna.

2. Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary

Muthanga wildlife sanctuary is situated about 16 km east of Sultan Bathery. It is regarded as the biggest abode of wildlife in Malabar region of Kerala. Main wildlife here includes elephant, spotted deer, tiger, and panthers etc. you can enjoy elephant safari in this sanctuary.

3. Edakkal Cave

Edakkal caves are situated on Ambukuthi Hills about 10 kilometers from Sulthan Bathery, in Wayanad district of Kerala. It has been formed due to a large split in a huge rock, and the resulting landscape represent the world's richest pictographic gallery of its kind.

The depth of both the clefts is about 30ft. On the rock walls you can spot some interesting carvings, which represent human and animal figures and objects commonly used by people at that time.

These carvings speak of a highly civilized people of prehistoric age and inspire the archaeologists and historians to rewrite the history of Wayanad and Kerala as a whole.

4. Thirunelli Temple

A piece of great temple architect Thirunelli temple is situated 29 kms north east of Mananthavady in the Brahmagiri hills. The temple comprises of 30 granite columns. Papanasini River running downhill adds beauty to the place. It is believed that a bath in holy water of the river washes away all the sins.

5. Banasura Dam

This is regarded as the largest earth dam of India. Many islands type of landscape emerges here during the monsoons, when the dam is full of water. These islands with the background of the Banasura hill can surely provide a hypnotizing sight to tourists.

6. Chembra Peak

Located about 2000 meters above the sea level, Chembra is the highest peak in Wayanad hills and provide ideal conditions for trekking. You can enjoy the scenic beauty of Wayanad, from the top of Chembra. The picturesque surroundings never fail to charm you with its beauty. Trekking to the Chembra peak is a risky mountaineering endeavor. Tourists can camp for one or two days at the top of the peak.

7. Kuruva Island

The Kuruva Island having green lush cover of evergreen forests is situated on bank of river Kabini and it is an ideal picnic spot. You can spot rare species of birds, orchids and herbs here.

8. Pookot Lake

It is a natural freshwater lake surrounded by evergreen forest and sloppy hills. A freshwater aquarium with large variety of fish is an added attraction here. Tourists here can enjoy boating. The weather here is lustrous and rich in the scenic beauty. Spices and handicraft items are also arranged for sale at Pookat. The lake is situated 3 km east of Vythiri.

9. Sentinel Rock Waterfalls

Located at 22 km south of Kalpetta and locally known as Soochippara is a very popular leisure destination. It is famous as a picnic spot as well as a trekking center. It is about 200m high and ideal for rock climbing.

The people of Wayanad are fond of rice and it is their staple food and Rasam, Sāmbhar, Moru koottan and Poricha koottu are some of dishes taken with rice. Some of the Kuruma tribal foods are boiled wild tubers with honey, fried rock crabs, karakkundappam, bamboo rice payasam, fried mushroom, muddha ada and vada, coconut rice, kallu puttu and pollayappam.

Arts & Culture

Wayanad has a good tradition in the field of art and culture and most of the tribal events and folk dances of tribal’s are performed during February and may. Tribal’s art forms performed by Paniyas are Vattakali and Koodiyattam using instruments like thudi and kuzhal, Gadhika by Adiyas, Kolkali by Kurumas and the Nellukuthu pattu by kurichias tribes. Onam is celebrated with great pomp and show during the month of August/September. Other festivals like Maha shivrathri and vishu are also celebrated with pomp and show.

Wayanad is a lush green paradise situated in the Western Ghats of Kerala with a long history dating back to Stone Age. This blessed land is clean, quiet, pristine, hypnotizing and enchanting with a cultural and social understanding still to be discovered. During the ancient times this land was ruled by the rajas of the Veda tribe and later on ruled by the Pazhassi Raja of Kottayam. After the Sreerangapattanam truce Tipu Sultan handed over the entire Malabar region including Wayanad to the British. The British changed the whole geography of this land with plateaus being used to cultivate tea and other cash crops and roads being laid across the dangerous slopes of mountains extending up to Mysore.

 Banasura Sagar Dam

Chembra Peak

If you are an admirer of soothing natural beauty and if you love to have an adventure trip, then Chembra Peak in Wayanad, will be a perfect stop for you. Eight kilometer south of Kalpetta, near to the town of Meppady, lays the highest peak in Wayanad, the Chembra Peak (2,100 m). Chembra peak adjoins Nilgiri hills in Tamil Nadu and Vallarimala in Kozhikode. From the town of Meppady you can reach the peak through walking. Kuruva Island

Kuruva Dweep or Kuruva Island is a protected river delta, comprising a cluster of islands over the middle of Kabini River in Wayanad. Edakkal is the only known place in India with Stone Age carvings. You can see here carvings belonging to Neolithic and Mesolithic age. The human figures of these caves have raised hair and some have masks. They all have archeological significance and are interesting too.Along with these pictorial carvings, you can also watch Tamil and Brahmi Script in Edakkal caves. Edakkal is said to have some links with Indus Valley Civilization....

The drive towards Muthanga and Tholpetty is beautiful with a wall of green on both sides. Paddy fields, plantations and thickets of bamboo trees and ginger bushes keep pace with you.

Wayanad tourism offers a two-hour jeep safari to get your fill of the awe-striking flora and fauna here. Ride under the dappled sunshine of the deciduous forest with patches of evergreen forests alive with the calls of around 216 bird species including peacocks, babblers, owls, cuckoos and black woodpeckers to mention a few. You’ll spot bamboo groves and trees like teak, rosewood, eucalyptus and silver oak plantations. 

Book a safari at one of the two entrances to gape at langurs, bison, bonnet macaques, sambar, wild boars and herds of majestic elephants in their habitat. If luck favours you then you might be able to spot a fiery-eyed tiger or a graceful leopard in the forest. Snakes and monitor lizards slither in the undergrowth and crocodiles and termite hill geckos lurk in the shadows.

Banasura Dam

The largest earthen dam in India and the second-largest in Asia, the Banasura Dam features prominently in the list of Wayanad tourist spots.

Kuruva Dweep 

This river delta is a hidden gem of Wayanad tourism and comprises a cluster of islands all carpeted with greenery and spread over 950 acres. The island is inhabited with exotic species of birds and plants such as rarely found orchids and herbs. Surrounded by streams, Wayanad tourism has come up with bamboo rafts and fibreglass boats that glide across the water for ten minutes until you reach the thickly forested islands. Take the rafts around to explore all the islands, each more charming than the last. Delve deeper inside the island to come upon bridges made of bamboo and towering trees which are rare and wizened with age.   You must get passes from the Forest Department to visit the island which are readily available at the counter. Visits to the cluster of islands are restricted during the monsoon. They remain open during October to May and you can feast your eyes on this beauty at a nominal fee. Just make sure you get here between 9.00 am to 5.00 pm.

  This attraction has to have a spot in your Wayanad tourist places list. The Thirunelli temple with ancient temple architecture stands pretty beside the forest-covered Brahmagiri hills in Wayanad and paints a pretty picture, making it one of the gems in the crown of Wayanad tourism. 

  Known as Wayanad tourism’s ‘Kashi of the south’, the temple was built around an interesting legend. The story goes that while going around the world, Lord Brahma came upon the Brahmagiri hills which left him smitten with their beauty. He descended to explore the place and had a vision of Lord Vishnu under an amla tree. According to Wayanad tourism, Lord Vishnu’s three incarnations namely Parasuram, Ram and Krishna have visited the temple on separate occasions during different ages. Lord Vishnu, in turn, promised that the water around the temple could wash away all earthly sins and gave birth to the stream of Papanashini (destroyer of sins). 

  The temple is imbued with an air of devotion and soul-soothing serenity, surrounded as it is with lush forests. All rituals of the temple are performed on the banks of the Papanashini stream which is believed to have medicinal properties. A sacred pond lies next to the stream where earlier five streams would pour in. Fringed by dense bushes, the pond holds in the middle a stone slab with the foot imprint of Lord Vishnu. These religious elements make the temple a hotspot for Hindu pilgrims in Wayanad tourism.

There is a holy rock in the temple where people pray for peace for their ancestors. On the western side of the temple lies the cave temple Gunnika which is dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Trek to a heart-shaped lake

There is a five-kilometre hike to get to the watchtower and a three and a half kilometre trek through dappled forests and grasslands to get to the summit. Wayanad tourism has made permits available for the trek at the VSS office, which is two kilometres away from the town of Meppadi. You’ll need a ticket which is valid for a group of ten people and comes with a guide who will meet you on the observation deck. The only downside is that a single person, without a group, will still have to shell out the same amount regardless of whether he’s travelling with a group or not.

Pakshipathalam

If you’re a hardcore trekker who’d like something more challenging then head out for this 7 km-trek which has large boulders studded deep in the forest for clambering. The lush forest has deciduous trees through which sunlight streams in shafts. With numerous kinds of birds chittering in the trees, bring your binoculars along for a good session of birdwatching. 

Permits are required for this trek which you can get at forest offices in the south or north Wayanad. The DTPC office in Kalpetta, under Wayanad tourism, also organises trekking guides that charge about Rs 600 per day. You can also camp in the forest and spend a night under a starry ceiling for an incredible experience. You can rent camping gear at Rs 250. If you love your own company when it comes to trekking then get your permit and reach the Thirunelli temple bright and early at 8.00 am. 

Enjoy amazing waterfalls

While Wayanad tourism boasts of numerous waterfalls sprinkled liberally all over the evergreen landscapes of Wayanad, a particularly striking waterfall is the Soochipara Falls.

Enjoy a scenic drive replete with views of rolling green tea estates as you drive from Meppadi to the Sentinel Rock Waterfalls which Soochipara is also known as. Nestled amid deciduous, evergreen and alpine forests, this three-tiered waterfall cascades with tremendous force. Marvel at cave drawings

Eddakal cave is one of India’s prominent prehistoric rock shelters and a highlight of Wayanad tourism. Get a workout on the one-kilometre uphill trek through an aromatic coffee estate.

The cool darkness of the caves harbour art from the Neolithic Age in 4000 BC and Megalithic Age. Some caves have 98ft long, 30 ft wide carvings of a chieftain, wild animals and writings in the Brahmi script.

A steep 20-minute walk up the Ambukuthi mountain takes you to a wonderfully lit cave which has a collection of ancient petroglyphs which goes back over 3000 years and offers sweeping views of Wayanad which will make your jaw drop.

If you’d like to stick around longer amidst all the history, then head to Eddakal Hermitage which has cottages around the hill and a cave restaurant where you can dig into delicious food during a candle-lit dinner.

Stare in awe at legendary Chain Tree

The Chain Tree is a lesser-known attraction of Wayanad tourism and is set in the mist-shrouded ghats of Lakkidi. The shackled ficus tree has a legend around it in which a tribal, Karinthandan showed a British engineer a way through the eerie Thamarassery Ghat. The Britisher wanted to grab credit for the route and killed the tribal. Since then, the outraged ghost of the tribal started haunting passerby who pleaded with a priest to rid them of the spirit. The priest exorcised the ghost and tied him to the tree. Incredibly, as the tree grew taller, the shackles draped around the branches grew with it and miraculously didn’t fall short in length. 

Visit this temple which was once a storage centre for ammo

Wayanad tourism has some spectacular places on offer and Sultan’s Battery, a quaint peaceful town with plenty of greenery and sparkling streams is one of them. The place has an intriguing story behind it. In the 18th century, when Tipu Sultan was opposing the British colonialists, he erected a watchtower on the outskirts of Ganapathivattom for defence. He needed a place to store ammunition and hatched a clever plan to hide his armoury in a 14th-century Jain temple. He cleared the idols and stored his ammunition there to fool the invading forces. The place is thus named Sultan’s Battery or Sultan Bathery. The Jain temple still exists today and helps tell the fascinating story.

  Uravu, a design centre and a bamboo processing unit near Kalpetta is a place for bamboo handicrafts created by rural artists, women and tribals to help them earn and utilise the bamboo freely abundant in Wayanad. Due to its high-altitude location, one needs to trek for approximately 90 minutes to enter the caves and then another 45 minutes to reach its mouth. Once you enter the caves, you’ll be quite surprised to see the rock carvings that are believed to be more than 8000 years old.

In the Wayanad he calls ‘home’, local issues are casting a shadow on Rahul’s re-election

Wayanad: The scorching summer heat couldn’t play spoilsport for the spirit of hundreds of UDF supporters who were waiting in Wayanad’s Sulthan Bathery for Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s first roadshow since filing his nomination to contest once again from this seat.

“He is like a son to Wayanad,” said Cicily, a 61-year-old Congress supporter who came to see the roadshow from Ambalavayal, roughly 10 kilometres away from Sulthan Bathery.

Rahul’s speech touched on a similar sentiment.

“I was telling Venugopal (Congress general secretary K.C. Venugopal) today when I was landing that whenever I am going to Wayanad, I feel like I am going to my house. Now I am going to pressure my mother to come here and stay here with you all for a week. I would tell her to come here for one month, but she has a slight problem with humidity. But, I told her that you are the most beautiful place on Earth,” he said during the roadshow. 

This was not the first time he called Wayanad his home. Criticised often by his political opponents over his absence from Wayanad, the Congress leader always addressed the district as his home during visits.

Rahul won from Wayanad in 2019 with a whopping margin of 4,31,770 votes over his nearest rival P.P. Suneer of the Communist Party of India (CPI). The then Congress president garnered 7,06,367  votes, followed by Suneer with 274,597 and NDA candidate Thushar Vellappally with 78,816 votes.

Wayanad parliamentary constituency comprises three assembly segments each of Wayanad (Mananthavady, Sulthan Bathery, and Kalpetta) and Malappuram (Eranad, Nilambur, Wandoor), besides Thiruvambady of Kozhikode. The district of Wayanad, according to the 2011 census, has a sizable minority population.

However, this time around Rahul is contesting against senior CPI leader and the party’s national face Annie Raja and state BJP chief K. Surendran in the constituency.

Voting in all 20 Lok Sabha seats in Kerala is to be held in the second phase on 26 April.

With both the LDF and the BJP targeting Rahul on his infrequent visits to Parliament and his constituency, the Congress is also facing the heat from the electorate on local issues. These include instances of the man-animal conflict that resulted in multiple deaths in the district these past few years, and subsequently prompted a night travel ban.

Locals ThePrint spoke to even suggested that participation in Rahul’s public meetings is dipping.

Local leadership of the CPI(M) claims electing Rahul to the Lower House did not benefit Wayanad, while BJP’s K. Surendran says the Congress leader is on a ‘tourist visa’ in Wayanad, while he is on a ‘permanent visa.’

According to PRS, Rahul had 51 percent attendance in the 17th Lok Sabha (2019-24) during which he took part in eight debates. He never proposed any private Bill. 

The local Congress leadership, on the other hand, maintained that they didn’t get any complaints from constituents about Rahul’s absence. 

“Last time too, people voted for him knowing that he was not going to settle in Wayanad. They know that he is a national leader and he is the one leading the anti-fascist movement in India. They know that he is the leader participating in most events and public rallies across India. So, we don’t get complaints that he is absent,” said Samshad Marakkar, vice president of the Wayanad district Congress Committee.

Marakkar added that Rahul is always present in the constituency during a crisis. He also contended that Rahul visited the constituency over 50 times in the last five years.

Congress campaign based on ‘performance’

Given that the LDF announced its candidates even before the declaration of the polling schedule by the ECI, Annie has been engaged in booth-level campaigning in Wayanad since the beginning of March. But this has done little to erode the Congress’ confidence.

According to the party, UDF workers across seats have been deployed for poll preparations in Wayanad and acknowledge that Rahul can’t focus only on one seat during the elections.

The party’s local unit told ThePrint that multiple squads have been created at the booth level for door-to-door campaigning. It added that in addition to Rahul and sister Priyanka, Wayanad will also witness canvassing by heavyweights including Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge, Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah and his deputy D.K. Shivakumar.

“But whenever he comes, we hold mega roadshows in the constituency,” said Marakkar.

Rahul, who held a mega roadshow in the constituency Monday, also held roadshows in four other parts of the constituency this month.

The party said Rahul’s progress report is the fulcrum of his campaign since he was able to find solutions to many concerns of the people.

The Congress’ campaign pamphlet in Wayanad states that Rahul spent Rs 121 crore for the development of rural roads in Wayanad, catapulting him among MPs who made the most of Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS) funds. MPLADS funds enable MPs to suggest and execute local developmental works based on the needs of their constituents. The pamphlet also credited Rahul with spending several crores on upgradation of Anganwadis in the constituency, besides focussing on the health and education sector.

According to Marakkar, the district got its first NEET exam centre through Rahul’s intervention since prior to it students had to travel to neighbouring Kozhikode to write the entrance exam.

‘Will overcome vote difference’: LDF

While the incumbent is seeking votes by highlighting his achievements as an MP, the LDF’s local unit said it was sure voters in Wayanad will analyse Rahul’s performance before voting this general election.

“When he comes to visit, even DCC (district Congress Committee) presidents have difficulty approaching him due to high security. He is not approachable at all. So how can a common man benefit from him?” asked P. Gagarin, district secretary of the Wayanad CPI(M) unit. Drawing a contrast, he added that Annie goes to villages and crisis-hit areas like Manipur and has a strong influence among women voters.

Many LDF supporters too voted for Rahul in 2019 as there was a perception that he was going to be the prime minister, which led to a difference of about 4 lakh votes between Rahul and the LDF candidate, said Gagarin.

According to him, the actual vote difference between the LDF and UDF in Wayanad is only around 30,000 votes, which was recorded during the 2021 assembly polls.

In the 2021 assembly polls, Congress-led UDF won four of the seven assembly segments in Wayanad, while the LDF won the remaining three. The cumulative vote difference between both alliances across these seven assembly segments was 38,776 votes.

“To overcome this, faults in the MP’s performance and the politics of the Congress are enough,” Gagarin said. He added that voters in Kerala are aware of UDF’s volatile political stand on contentious issues such as CAA.

“He (Rahul) is saying he renovated Anganwadi. What about railway? It’s the dream of Wayanad. What about night travel ban? His party is ruling in Karnataka,” asked Gagarin.

The reference is aimed at a night travel ban (9 pm to 6 am) in place on NH-766, which passes through the Bandipur Tiger Reserve. The ban was first imposed by the deputy commissioner of Chamarajanagar in Karnataka in 2009 but later lifted only to be reinstated by the Karnataka High Court in 2010. The ban was challenged by the Kerala government in the Supreme Court which formed a panel to look into the matter. Both the committee and the central government recommended continuation of the ban. In 2019, when the apex court asked the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change and the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) to suggest alternate routes so that NG-776 could be closed down permanently, the move had led to widespread protests in Wayanad.

Paul Mathews, a member of the Kerala Independent Farmers Association (KIFA), shared Gagarin’s views. Rahul has done nothing to resolve the man-animal conflict in the district systematically apart from giving funds for some projects, he told ThePrint.

“We expect an MP to raise these issues in Parliament and be involved in rulemaking,” Mathews said, adding that Rahul didn’t raise any questions when The Wild Life (Protection) Amendment Act, 2022, was introduced in Parliament. The amendment classified many animals including monkeys in the protected animals category, which prohibits humans from attacking them while animals damage farmers’ crops, he added. Mathews also claimed that KIFA members tried setting up a meeting with Rahul many times since 2021 in this regard through his local and Delhi offices, but their requests were met with radio silence.

Rahul trains guns at both BJP & LDF

As for Rahul, he has in his speeches in Wayanad targeted both the BJP and the Left.

Addressing the roadshow in Sulthan Bathery on 15 April, he said both the state and central government have adopted a ‘step-motherly’ attitude towards Wayanad. He also claimed that he had written multiple times to both state and central governments sounding concerns on key issues including the man-animal conflict, but received no response.

“The night travel ban is complex, man-animal conflict is complex. But the demand for a medical college is not. I’ve written multiple times to the CM about it. But it’s being delayed. For the Kerala government, it’s something that can be done in all of two minutes,” he said.

Rahul also trained his guns at the Modi government, accusing it of posing a threat to democracy and secularism — poll planks highlighted by both the ruling LDF and the Opposition UDF to fuel anti-BJP sentiment.

“You can’t say one language is superior to others. It’s like every flower in a bouquet is asked to be all white. India is like a bouquet of flowers. Every flower needs to be respected. Why can a young boy/girl in a school be a leader? Why can’t an auto driver be a leader? Why this idea of one leader? This is the basic difference between us and them. We want to listen to everyone but the BJP wants to impose everything. We didn’t get Independence to be colonised by the RSS,” he told supporters Monday.

Annie has women’ support: LDF

Born and brought up in neighbouring Kannur district, Annie Raja has carved a national profile for herself as general secretary of the National Federation of Indian Women (NFIW), the women’s wing of the CPI. “When people get to know her, they vote for her,” said Gagarin. He added that Annie will get the support of women voters in Wayanad.

Though it’s her maiden election, Annie has come to Wayanad after being the CPI’s face in New Delhi for several years. Booked for calling the ethnic conflict in Manipur a ‘state-sponsored’ one, she also emerged as a staunch supporter of the women wrestlers demanding action against BJP MP and former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who faces allegations of sexual harassment.

Last week, one of the wrestlers, Olympic bronze medallist Sakshee Malikkh, extended support to Annie. To add to that, victims of atrocities perpetrated by the Joint Special Task Force (JSTF) established to apprehend smuggler Veerappan in Tamil Nadu’s Sathyamangalam forest have been campaigning in support of Annie across Wayanad.

Rahul extols Wayanad's beauty, plan to invite Sonia Gandhi to visit place

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said on Monday Wayanad is the most beautiful place on earth and expressed his intention to invite his mother and senior party leader, Sonia Gandhi, to visit and stay there for a few days.

While addressing party workers during a roadshow in Sultan Bathery in the hill district earlier in the day, the Wayanad MP stated that whenever he visits the area, he feels like he is coming home.

Gandhi said he will urge his mother to visit Wayanad.

"I was telling (K C) Venugopal today that whenever I come here, I feel like coming home. Now I am going to pressure my mother to stay with you for one week or ten days. I would tell her to come for one month, but she has a slight problem with humidity. But I told her that you are missing the most beautiful place on earth," Gandhi said.

The Congress leader came here today to launch the second phase of his election campaign.

He had kicked off the poll campaign in Wayanad early this month by filing his nomination papers and holding a massive roadshow.

Gandhi won from Wayanad with a record margin of 4,31,770 votes during the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

Polling for Kerala's 20 Lok Sabha seats will be held on April 26.
