Cambridge Theatre

Cambridge Theatre

The Cambridge Theatre opened in 1930. The theatre occupies a triangular site on Seven Dials.

The Cambridge Theatre opened with a production of Masquerade , a revue type show by André Charlot. In 1984, the theatre was renamed "the magic castle of Seven Dials" in the hopes of bringing magic shows to the West End — the scheme ended after a year.

In 1999, the building became part of the Really Useful Group Ltd portfolio of theatres. Andrew Lloyd Webber premiered The Beautiful Game in 2000, with musicals including Chicago and Jerry Springer – The Opera . Matilda opened at the Cambridge Theatre in November 2011.

Cambridge Theatre Seating Information

The auditorium has three levels – Stalls, Royal Circle and Grand Circle.

Stalls seating is not affected by the overhang from the Royal Circle.

The Royal Circle is set far back, and with a shallow rake in the seats the audience seated here may feel detached from the action.

The Grand Circle is steeply raked which offers good sightlines.

Cambridge Theatre - Recommended Seats

💸 Value for money seats Stalls: Rows F-K. Dress Circle: Rows C-F. Upper Circle: Rows A-F. 🎟️ If money were no matter Stalls: Any seats in the middle of rows C-I. Row A and Row B are too close to the stage, and you may miss out on the action happening at the sides. Dress Circle: Any seats in the middle of rows A-C. 🎭 Best views of the stage Stalls: Middle seats in rows C-G. Dress Circle: Middle seats in rows B-D. Upper Circle: Middle seats in rows C-F.

Cambridge Theatre Stalls

The Stalls section has a total of 498 seats, including accessible seating.

The biggest section of the theater, Stalls, has rows starting from A all the way to S. There is an aisle right in middle, dividing the section into two halves. The Stalls section fans out from the stage, getting wider the further you go back. This is the closest section to the stage and usually in such sections, if you are sitting in the first couple of rows you might have to look up, however, at this theater, the stage is relatively low so you do not have to strain your necks. Being the closest section, although the prices are higher when compared to the Upper and Dress Circle, the views are definitely worth it. If you are looking for a perfect West End experience and don’t mind shelling out a few extra bucks, this is the way to go.

Cambridge Theatre Dress Circle

The Dress Circle, is the smallest section of the theater and has rows starting from A till H. Unlike the Stalls section, the Dress Circle is split into 3 sub-sections (left, centre, right), courtesy of 2 aisles. According to most critics and audience reviews, the seats in this section, particularly the ones in the middle and front, offer the best views of the stage, some even better than the Stalls. Unlike most theatres, this section is actually pretty close to the stage.

Cambridge Theatre Upper Circle

This is the highest section of the theater and the furthest away from the stage, and hence the cheapest. With rows starting from A till M, this section is bigger than the Dress Circle but smaller than the Stalls. It is divided into 2 subsections by an aisle cutting the section horizontally. The front part is further divided into 3 subsections by 2 vertical aisles. Although the stage is in full view from here, you do have to lean forward a bit to catch the full action. If you are planning to go for the show with kids or someone short, you might want to avoid this section.

Which Seats Offer The Best View?

Given the size of the theatre, all the seats have a full and decent view of the stage. However, there are certain seats which stand out above the rest and will make your experience all the more joyful. Amongst the 3 sections, the Stalls have the best seats in terms of views of the stage. Seats on rows C through G are some of the highly rated ones due to the fact that it is not too close to the stage nor is it too far. They are perfectly placed for a wonderful view.

The Dress Circle also offers some great views of the stage. The recommended seats are 12-23 in rows A-D.

There are certain seats in the Upper Circle which also provide a tremendous view. Seats in rows C-F have great elevated views of the stage. In the Upper Circle section, it is always recommended to get seats in the front and middle section, particularly between seats Row C-F: Seat 13-23.

Which Seats Offer the Best Value for Money?

If you are not looking to spend too much money and still get a killer view of the stage whilst getting a bang for your buck, then look no further.

In the Stalls section, the rows L-P provide a good view, while at the same time, aren’t as expensive as the seats in the front. In the Dress Circle, seats in rows E-H provide good views at reasonable prices. The cheapest tickets can be found in the Upper Circle section. The best seats in this section are middle seats in rows A-F. If you can, try reserving seats in the middle of the row so that you can get a good look at all the action on stage.

  • The Cambridge Theater is an average-sized theater with a capacity of 1237 seats spread across 3 sections.
  • The 3 sections in the theater are the Stalls, Dress Circle, and Upper Circle, with the Stalls being the largest section.
  • The Stalls have a capacity of 498 seats spread across 19 rows while the Dress Circle has a capacity of 295 seats spread over 8 rows and the Upper Circle can accommodate 444 guests in 13 rows.
  • Considering the theater is relatively small and without obstruction, all the seats have a good and complete view of the stage.
  • Since late 2011, this theater has been home to ‘ Matilda The Musical ’ by the Royal Shakespeare Company and it has been a runaway success since opening here.

Your ULTIMATE Guide to London Theatres

Visited to watch Matilda & the theatre and show both get 10/10. Theatre staff very pleasant, helpful & professional at all times. Theatre was very clean and spacious (even in the cheapest seats) normal london prices, nothing too expensive. It’s about a 10 minute walk from Leicester Square/Covent Garden/tube area.

- Lynsey H, Tripadvisor, April 2023

Impressive theatre, well organised team. Clean in all public areas. Good choice of snacks and beverages. The seating was comfortable and it was definitely worth sitting in the dress circle. A delightful evening on a Friday in London.

Did you know?

Bringing the river to life in raucous style each June, ‘The Bumps’ are a chaotic series of rowing races. In this Cambridge tradition, which dates back to the early 19th Century, boats set out in single file and must catch and touch, or ‘bump’, the boat ahead without being caught by the rowers on their tail.
