The Shins to Perform ‘Oh, Inverted World’ in Its Entirety on 21st Anniversary Tour
By Daniel Kreps
Daniel Kreps
A year after the Shins celebrated the 20th anniversary of their debut Oh, Inverted World , the band will mark its 21st birthday with a lengthy North American tour where they’ll play the beloved 2001 LP in its entirety.
The trek for the album — which included tracks like “New Slang,” “Caring Is Creepy,” and “The Past and Pending” — kicks off July 12 in San Francisco and concludes two months later in Portland, Oregon on Sept. 16.
Along the way, James Mercer and company will bring their DIY-spun Oh, Inverted World venues like Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium, New York’s Radio City Music Hall, and Morrison, Colorado’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre.

“Everything was so tongue-in-cheek in the indie world of the ’90s,” Mercer said of the album in a new statement. “I remember feeling a longing for some sort of romance in music again, something earnest, like a real attempt at some emotional language.”
In addition to each gig’s full-album set of Oh, Inverted World — which was remastered and rereleased in 2021 for its 20th anniversary — the Shins will also perform a handful of fan favorites and deep cuts on their upcoming gig. Portland band Joseph will serve as special guest on the trek.

The Shins kicked off their “Oh, Inverted World 21st Birthday Tour” on Tuesday night (July 12th) at The Warfield in San Fransisco, California. The tour celebrates the indie group’s highly celebrated debut and was accompanied by a deluxe reissue .
While running through Oh, Inverted World , The Shins were joined by openers and fellow Portland group Joseph on several songs. After completing the full LP play-through, the band filled out the performance with songs from each of their studio albums. They also pulled out a cover of The Stone Temple Pilots’ “Vasoline” and interpolated Tom Petty’s “American Girl” during encore opener “Sleeping Lessons.”
Released in 2001, Oh, Inverted World is often recognized as a defining moment in indie music as the ’90s gave way to the new millennium. “Everything was so tongue-in-cheek in the indie world of the ’90s,” frontman James Mercer recalled in a statement. “I remember feeling a longing for some sort of romance in music again, something earnest, like a real attempt at some emotional language.”
Over two decades later, Oh, Inverted World remains just as a relevant and influential. The celebratory tour will extend through September and features nationwide dates. You can grab tickets for upcoming performances via Ticketmaster .

Hier mein Review für das Shins Konzert am 16. August 2017 in Köln.

Over the years since their remarkable 2001 debut album, The Shins have undergone numerous personnel changes. That's OK though, as long as lead singer and songwriter James Mercer is still running the show.
While time and age have perhaps supplanted the group's original wide-eyed naivete, that's been more than adequately replaced at live shows by an expanded 7-piece lineup. The current incarnation of The Shins can not only tear through old fan favorites like “Caring Is Creepy” and “So Says I”, but also shows off layers of development on the new material Mercer has penned.
In fact, the most surprising thing for longtime fans seeing the group for the first time in a while is how muscular and filled out The Shins sound is in a live setting now. Whereas Mercer might have occasionally been something of a quiet frontman, his confidence in himself and his ace band of veteran indie rockers has him revealing a much more showman-like style on stage.
Don't worry about the current lineup overdoing things, either. When the time comes to treat a classic song like “New Slang” with the delicacy it requires, for all their newfound power, the group handles that song with great finesse.
There are few touring rock bands able to deliver as varied a trip through indie styles as The Shins, something that makes them a concert worth seeking out.
3 stars (***): Overall, the performance was pleasant. Although I am not the biggest fan of the Shins they managed to produce an enjoyable show. It was a shame though that their hits 'New Slang' and 'Phantom Limb' both felt a bit slow, while the latter also seemed to be a vocal challenge for James Mercer. The crowd had a good time though and clapped and chanted along to their more well-known tunes. Big plus was the addition of the violins: the band gave me a more solid impression of musicianship when they showed to be capable of playing several instruments. The support act, Kid Wave, was a good addition to the show.
The Shins' 5th album, Heartworms, is a varied and interesting listen and was the same live.
Although it's a bit of a shame to see the band become Mercer & Co. these days, the lineup of musicians I witnessed on this tour was impressive.
The Shins always play a quality and diverse setlist, which I enjoyed in Berlin. This also included two or three fantastic twists on classic songs, which seemed to draw more out of classic tunes than ever before.
It wasn't an incredible gig, but was pretty good. I enjoyed it.
The Shins'concert in Amsterdam was quite the show. Having known and loved the band for their quieter songs of earlier albums, the show a great mix of both older and newer material, with the older material brought to life with spirit. The crowd and the band connected, and it was wonderful to see a group of friends on stage having fun with their music and their audience. It was a great evening in which The Shins proved that even after 20 years of work, their songs are still strong and have aged well.
I have been wanting to see The Shins for about 10 years now and they rocked it out so much harder than I expected!! They played a great mix of older songs as well as songs from their newest album, Heartworms. James was smiling so much and the whole band really seemed to enjoy being there, which made the show that much more amazing to be a part of. The stage setup was trippy and fantastic, the sound was perfect, and they gave us a nice long encore. I would see them a thousand times again if I could.
The Shins are the best band I have ever seen live. Some bands live are just 'eh, not so good', but The Shins live are amazing. Raw talent. James sounds so great on stage in person, and the whole band was having a great time preforming. Jon Sortland on the drums was rockin out with a huge smile on his face, it was great. Amazing concert, if you like The Shins you can't miss it. As a long time Shins fan, it made me very emotional lmao.
The Shins were great overall. They played a mix of new and old songs and appeared to be having fun. The sound was pretty good and the band was on point.
I didn’t particularly care for the opener, Foxygen. The performance wasn’t all that compelling. Then the singer made some comment about opening for the Shins in order to get more exposure. It sounded like he didn’t really want to be thwre. Completely missed the first band.
The Shins are great, they put on a really good show. They played a lot of newer songs which I expected, but I saw some set lists from the earlier part of their tour and wished they played a set more along the lines of those. New songs are good though and they seemed to have fun on stage, partially covering American Girl by Tom Petty. 9/10, always recommend seeing the Shins. James Mercer still go it, great voice.
An awesome band who put on an awesome show! They sound amazing live and played a terrific set that featured songs from their new album generously intermingled with fan favorites like, "Kissing the Lipless," and, "New Slang." We've waited a long time to see these musicians and were not disappointed!

Brief History of Sochi
The territory of Sochi has an ancient history. The first people appeared in the vicinity of present Sochi about 400-350 thousand years ago. The most famous monument of the Stone Age is Akhshtyr cave inhabited about 250 thousand years ago. In the first half of the 6th century BC, a large group of Scythian tribes settled on the coast of the Black Sea.
Greek colonization of the Black Sea coast of the Caucasus began with the appearance of city-states in the 6th-5th centuries BC, and lasted until the 1st century BC. The period from the 1st century till the 5th century AD was the time of Roman colonization of the Black Sea coast.
In the 6th-15th centuries, the region was under control of various Christian kingdoms. As a result of the Russian-Turkish war of 1828-1829, the Russian Empire received the territory of present Sochi.
More Historical Facts…
Sochi was founded as a fort called Alexandria in April 21, 1838. The purpose of the construction of fortifications was the suppression of the slave trade and smuggling of weapons. In 1839, the fort received a new name - Navaginskaya fortress. During the Crimean War of 1853-1856, the local garrisons were transported to Novorossiysk, because of the English-French squadron that appeared in the Black Sea.
In 1864, the fortress was rebuilt as Dahovsky fort. Since 1874, it was known as Dahovsky Posad, from 1896 - Sochi (after the name of the Sochi River, on the banks of which the fort was standing).
In June 14, 1909, the first resort “The Caucasian Riviera” was opened. This date is the beginning of Sochi as a resort city. Sochi became a town in 1917.
After the Russian Civil War, great attention was paid to the development of Sochi as a resort city. In 1937, Sochi became a part of Krasnodar Krai. Sochi - Features
In 2014, Sochi became the first city with a subtropical climate which held the Winter Olympics.
Sochi is located approximately midway between the North Pole and the equator, at the latitude of Nice, Toronto and Vladivostok. The length of the city on the Black Sea coastline is about 145 km. The urban area is located mainly along the coast, sometimes expanding into the mountain valleys.
Sochi, the urban village of Krasnaya Polyana and a number of settlements located on the southern slopes of the Greater Caucasus mountain range form a municipal formation resort-city of Sochi, also informally referred to as the Big Sochi. The territory of the Big Sochi is divided into four districts: Adlersky, Hostinsky, Central, and Lazarevsky.
Tourism and related services are the backbone of the local economy. The Big Sochi has a lot of hotels, motels, restaurants, cafes, bars, entertainment centers, water parks, marinas, piers, etc.
Sochi is a major transportation hub of southern Russia. Sochi international airport offers flights to Moscow, St. Petersburg, Ekaterinburg, Krasnodar, Novosibirsk, Tyumen, Rostov-on-Don, Istanbul (Turkey), Yerevan (Armenia), Minsk (Belarus) and a number of other cities. Public transport is mainly represented by small buses (marshrustkas), taxis and a small number of buses. An alternative way is to hire or rent a car.
Sochi - Climate
Sochi as well as the rest of Russia’s Black Sea coast south of Tuapse is located in the zone of humid subtropical climate, which strongly distinguishes this region from the northern part of the coast from Anapa to Tuapse, dominated by the typical semi-arid Mediterranean climate.
A similar climate is observed in nearby Abkhazia as well as in the south-eastern United States (Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia). Maximum precipitation occurs in the winter season, mainly in the form of rain.
Winters are warm, summers are hot and humid. As the city is located on the northern edge of the subtropics, frosts and snowfalls sometimes occur in winter.
The average temperature in January is plus 6.1 degrees Celsius, in July - plus 23.2 degrees Celsius. In summer, the water temperature reaches 26 degrees in August. The average number of sunny days is 211.

Attractions of Sochi
The most important factors that attract tourists in Sochi are its warm, subtropical climate, the Black Sea, mineral sources, the proximity of the mountains, relatively well-developed tourist and recreational infrastructure.
Protected areas (Caucasian Biosphere Reserve, Sochi republican state natural reserve, Sochi National Park) occupy about 80% of the total area of the Big Sochi (3,502 sq. km.). Colchis forests located partially on the territory of Sochi (Caucasian Biosphere Reserve) are the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
“Rosa Khutor” (ski resort in Krasnaya Polyana), Krasnaya Polyana (mountain cluster) - the venue of the Winter Olympic Games 2014, the Olympic Park in Adlersky district, Imertinskaya Embankment (walking area) are among the main places of interest. The Shins' 5th album, Heartworms, is a varied and interesting listen and was the same live. Although it's a bit of a shame to see the band become Mercer & Co. these days, the lineup of musicians I witnessed on this tour was impressive.
