A galaxy far, far away just got a little bit bigger!

star tours disneyland paris english

Few attractions offer the kind of unique ride experience that Disneyland’s Star Tours — The Adventures Continue offers. First majorly updated in 2010, the ride was once again updated in 2015, 2017, and 2019 to include 700 different ride experiences.  Now in 2024, the ride is once again getting another update!

Star Tours — The Adventures continue at Disneyland, Disney’s Hollywood Studios , and Disneyland Paris all received an update on April 5th, 2024 to reflect new  Star Wars  Disney+ media and we were invited to get a FIRSTHAND LOOK! Check it out!

The new adventures include characters and locations from  Ahsoka, Andor,  and  The Mandalorian.  We got to experience these new adventures and we were absolutely blown away!

star tours disneyland paris english

The pre-show was the same as usual. Also, our first scene was pod-racing on Tatooine — a scene we have experienced before.

Then came the exciting part — new characters! Din Djarin and Grogu sent a transmission with  The Mandalorian  theme song playing. Grogu snatched a flying frog while Djarin was giving us important intel which made for a fun 3D moment.

Then we made it to a planet featured in Ahsoka.  There, Ahsoka showed up to help us in battle with Purrgil (space whales). Beware — you may almost get eaten by one! We weren’t allowed to grab footage, but we love these new additions to the ride. We only saw the scenes from  Ahsoka  and  The Mandalorian —  we did not get  Andor  on our ride.

Accompanying the new Star Tours update at Disneyland is “Season of the Force” a Star Wars- themed event that will run from April 5th through June 2nd, 2024 . “Season of the Force” will include limited-time  Star Wars- themed food and merchandise as well as Fire of the Rising Moons (a NEW way to view the Disneyland fireworks from Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge), Hyperspace Mountain overlay for Space Mountain , Seek and Find at The Star Trader, and Disneyland After Dark:  Star Wars Nite events.

We’ll keep you posted on any updates during this event as well as on all things Disneyland, so be sure to stay tuned here at AllEars for all the latest!

Disney's Star Tours - The Adventures Continue

star tours disneyland paris english

Disney's Star Tours - The Adventures Continue improves on the original attraction in every way—and sets a new standard for motion simulator rides. What had become a slightly tired trip to a Star Wars galaxy far, far away is now a giddy jaunt to... well, half the fun is you never know where in hyperspace the ride will whisk you.

  • Thrill Scale (0=Wimpy, 10=Yikes): 4.5. Relatively mild motion simulator thrills. Those prone to motion sickness may experience discomfort (although closing your eyes should quell any queasiness). The ride also offers Star Wars -style action. It makes our list of Disneyland's most thrilling rides .
  • Location: Disneyland , Disney's Hollywood Studios at Disney World , Disneyland Paris and Tokyo Disneyland.
  • Height requirement: 40 inches

Disney Raises Its Own Bar

When it debuted at Disneyland in 1987, the original Star Tours was the first major motion simulator attraction at a theme park, and the newfangled virtual reality concept ushered in a new era for park attractions. If theme parks are about escaping from the everyday world, motion simulators offer an ideal means of escape. Using seats that move in sync with filmed action projected onto a screen, the destinations are only limited by the imagination of the attraction's designers. Star Tours was also a bold departure for Disney which, up until that point, had used its own content as the basis for its attractions.

Since the ride film made its debut, developers have added Omnimax screens (such as The Simpsons Ride ), roving motion base vehicles (such as Transformers: The Ride 3D ), and other features to enhance the you-are-there experience. The movie ride space cowboys at Walt Disney Imagineering, Lucasfilm, and Industrial Light & Magic (Lucasfilm's visual effects mavens), have upped their own ante with a retooled version of the attraction that launched in 2011.

The impetus for the re-imagined ride dates back to the late 1990s when Episode 1 of the Star Wars prequel trilogy was being filmed. According to Tom Fitzgerald, executive vice president and senior creative executive at Walt Disney Imagineering , "George Lucas contacted us and said the pod racing scene in the movie would be perfect for Star Tours." Anyone who has seen the movie would agree; the largely point-of-view sequence, with the hover vehicles tearing through a desert course, seems tailor-made for a park ride. So what took so long? "We needed to raise the bar," says Fitzgerald. Thankfully, the bar has indeed been raised.

3-D Without the Gimmicks

The infrastructure of the attraction remains essentially unchanged. Guests still make their way through a mythology-packed "spaceport" en route to their Starspeeder 1000 boarding gate and an allegedly uneventful journey to some friendly planet. Star Wars stalwarts R2-D2 and C-3PO are on hand to help ready the vehicles (and entertain riders stuck in line). After some pre-flight safety instructions, guests enter the familiar Starspeeder cabins and buckle up for a bumpy ride.

Once the ride begins, however, it's clear that this is not the same Endor-bound Star Tours that lurched ad nauseam through the cosmos for 24 years. Speaking of clear, the super high-def clarity of the digitally projected film is remarkably crisper than the original ride. And by adding 3-D to the mix, the attraction offers a vivid sense of depth, while the dorky 3-D goggles don't noticeably dim the alluring brightness of the images.

Unlike the gotcha gimmickry of most 3-D park rides, the extra dimension of the spiffed-up Star Tours is more understated. With its easy availability at the local cineplex, the novelty of 3-D has long since worn off. Wisely, the Imagineers have seamlessly incorporated the effect in a largely unself-conscious and elegant way that helps bring Lucas' alternate-universe to life.

You Are There. But You Never Know Where.

The most compelling improvement over Star Tours 1.0 is the ride's random sequence generator. By slicing together many different destinations and transition scenes, Disney says that there are over 50 possible story combinations. No two rides, therefore, would likely be the same (unless uber-fans boarded Star Tours a lot ). That keeps the attraction fresh and makes it eminently re-rideable. It also makes other motion simulator attractions, with their fixed been-there, done-that plots, seem so 20th century.

Like the original Star Tours (and nearly every other motion simulator ride), what all versions of the attraction have in common is that things very quickly go horribly wrong. Rookie pilots R2-D2 and C-3PO are unexpectedly drafted into action, rebel spies are discovered lurking among the passengers, and the Starspeeders must periodically engage in evasive maneuvers and travel to distant planets to avoid certain calamity. Other destinations include the ice planet of Hoth, Naboo, and the ominous Death Star.

It's quite impressive to experience the attraction more than once and be treated to an entirely unique story arc each time. Different characters (which might include, among others, Boba Fett, Yoda, Princess Leia, and supreme baddie Darth Vader), different missions, different locations, and even different gags will have you marveling at the audacity of the ride. "It was a challenge to sync everything," says Spiegel, referring to the on-the-fly nature of the stitched-together film, the corresponding motion sequences, and the in-cabin effects. “We wanted to be able to take guests to many places in the Star Wars universe. And now we can."

Even More Places to Visit

Because it is screen-based, Disney has the ability to add sequences and make updates to the attraction, which it periodically does. For example, in late 2019, the parks introduced new scenes inspired by Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker , the latest installment in the movie franchise. Among the places added to the Starspeeders' itineraries was the ocean moon Kef Bir.

Since the introduction of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge , the groundbreaking lands at Disneyland and Disney’s Hollywood Studios, it has been a bit disconcerting to have Star Tours exist outside of the contained Black Spire Outpost, the trading port on the planet Batuu. It is especially strange at the Disney World park, where Star Tours is just a couple of blocks away from Galaxy’s Edge. Disney has explained the disconnect by saying that the Star Tours attractions pay homage to the movies and mythology while Galaxy’s Edge represents the “real” Star Wars lands.

It may be some time before we actually have the technology to fly off to faraway stars. Until then, the mighty impressive technology that fuels Star Tours - The Adventures Continue can virtually transport us, if only for a few minutes at a time, to places that were previously unthinkable.

Star Tours

  • Star Tours was a joint production between Walt Disney Imagineering and George Lucas' special effects operation Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) . After agreeing to the project, Walt Disney Imagineering purchased military flight simulators to help create the effects and movement. The final StarSpeeders are therefore very similar in design and power to these immense industrial machines.
  • The Astroport workers seen during the flight and in the pre-show video are all ILM modelshop workers . However, contrary to popular belief, the worker seen ducking in shock as your StarSpeeder returns to the Astroport is infact not George Lucas but Ira Keeler, an ILM modelmaker who just happened to be in the right place at the right time!
  • Look closely at REX's bodywork and you'll see a red tag featuring the words "Remove Before Flight" - could this explain his poor flight skills?
  • One of the Ewoks featured in the pre-flight video is holding a Mickey Mouse plush . The guests surrounding them are all Imagineers and their families.

The original Star Tours in California, opened 1987, cost almost twice as much as the whole park did upon opening in 1955!

  • Make your plans for a Star Tours departure later in the day for a shorter wait at the terminal. Even though the ride is indoors, it is given an extra buzz of realism at nighttime thanks to the spacey atmosphere of Discoveryland outside.
  • Not suitable for sufferers of motion sickness.
  • For safety, you should be in good health and free from high blood pressure, heart, back or neck problems, motion sickness or other conditions which could be aggravated by this adventure.
  • Expectant mothers and those wearing an orthopaedic device or surgical collar should not ride.

Star Tours - The Adventures Continue (Disneyland Paris)

star tours disneyland paris english

In 1987, the original version of Star Tours opened in Disneyland’s Tomorrowland. The motion simulator ride based on the Star Wars franchise featured Captain Rex, a droid that attempted to fly guests to the planet Endor.

In 2011, Disney debuted an updated version of this ride: Star Tours – The Adventures Continue . The new ride uses advanced 3D technology, randomly chosen alternate scenes, and frequent updates with new characters and locations as new Star Wars films come out.

The new version also exists at other Disney Parks around the world: Disney’s Hollywood Studios , Disneyland Park  and Tokyo Disneyland .

Queue Details

  • Captain Rex can still be found in the new version – the droid is near the entrance to the queue’s cargo bay, ready to be shipped far, far away as DEFECTIVE stickers are now stuck to him.

star tours disneyland paris english

  • The droid found during the boarding pre-show is Aly San San . She is inspired by  Attack of the Clones ‘ waitress droid, WA-7 . In the US versions of the ride, this character is voiced by actress Allison Janney which has a “glitch” to provide safety information in Spanish. In this version of the ride, the droid is voiced by a French actress with her “glitch” being part of Janney’s English spiel. You may recognize Janney as the voice of Peach in Pixar’s Finding Nemo (2003) as well as Doofenshmirtz’s ex-wife Charlene in Disney’s Phineas and Ferb .

Ride Details

  • The original French version of the ride featured Luq Hamet as the voice of Captain Rex. Hamet has a few Disney roles under his belt as the French voice-over actor for Milo in Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001) as well as the titular character in Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988) . In the new version, our pilot is C-3PO, voiced by the film’s original English voice actor/performer Anthony Daniels , who although doesn’t provide the voice-overs for the French dubs of the  Star Wars films , does speak fluent French.
  • The ride doesn’t have an original score, but rather a compilation of music from the Star Wars films by John Williams . Composer  Richard Bellis  was in charge of arranging and orchestrating the melody including some original elements such as the infamous chime . Bellis played a similar role in Disneyland’s Indiana Jones And The Temple Of The Forbidden Eye as well as a number of original projects for Disney including The ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter and Dinosaur .
  • One of the sequences takes riders to Crait , the mineral planet seen during  Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi (2017) . Crait was inspired by and filmed on Bolivia’s Uyuni Salt Flat . The portions used during the ride are likely to be completely CGI.
  • Another sequence takes riders to Hoth , the ice planet seen during  Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back (1980) . Hoth’s battle scenes were filmed on and near Norway’s Hardangerjøkulen (Hardanger Glacier) , although the ride footage appears to all be CGI.

The unmissable addition to Disneyland’s Star Tours ride? Space whales

Disneyland’s Star Tours: The Adventures Continue has proved to be one of the theme park’s most versatile attractions.

Though perhaps no longer the groundbreaking technological marvel that it was when it debuted in 1987, the flight simulator ride has shifted with the franchise, withstanding cultural trends and aligning with whichever version of “Star Wars” is popular at the moment — or in need of a marketing boost.

The latest update to Star Tours brings the ride into the Disney+ era, with nods to series such as “The Mandalorian,” “Ahsoka” and “Andor.” More noteworthy, at least for Disneyland guests, is that the centerpiece of the latest upgrades is a scene that provides a slight tonal shift for the attraction, one focused, albeit briefly, on slowing down and giving so-called starspeeder riders a look at one of “Star Wars’” more majestic creatures. Star Tours will now rocket guests straight to a moment that boasts a close-up with the purrgil, essentially large, mysterious space whales that move with a galactic grace.

Princess Tiana, in a green explorers outfit, is one of Disney's most lifelike robotics.

Want to see Disneyland’s most advanced animatronics? Visit Tiana’s Bayou Adventure

With new droids at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and some of the most lifelike characters ever created at Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, Disney is looking to wow guests.

April 4, 2024

For the 3-D attraction, its a moment that provides a breather. The motion simulator lingers for a few seconds, and our makeshift animatronic captain, the golden droid C-3PO, turns to face riders. C-3PO shifts into tour guide mode, appearing in awe of the purrgil and commenting on how serene the animals are.

“This will be different from other sequences, to have a moment,” said Tom Fitzgerald, a senior creative executive with Walt Disney Imagineering, the company’s secretive arm devoted to theme park attractions, when asked about taking a patient approach to the scene. “You don’t get many moments. It’s so compact. But it’s a moment to let people look at the beauty of this, and the 3-D gives you the scale of those creatures.”

star tours disneyland paris english

The additions to Star Tours are arguably the centerpiece of Disneyland’s all-things-”Star Wars” promotion Season of the Force , which debuted this past weekend and runs through June 2. The “Star Wars” festival also sees new droids making their way to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge through the duration of the event, as well as the return of Space Mountain overlay Hyperspace Mountain and a new free scavenger hunt that aims to get players to pay close attention to the minute details of Galaxy’s Edge.

Fitzgerald has been with Star Tours since the ride’s beginning, and oversaw the latest Star Tours additions, which further deviate the attraction from any strict “Star Wars” timeline and instead focus it on being a sort of “greatest hits” for the brand. The purrgil scene also features Rosario Dawson’s Ahsoka Tano and the character’s svelte, fast-rotating starship above the planet of Seatos. Tano’s ship inspired Imagineers to see if they could add some new tricks to the attraction, mainly in the way the simulator can move. When Tano’s vessel twists and spins, for instance, the starspeeder attempts to mimic it, endeavoring to create the feeling of a 360-barrel roll. At other times, the starspeeder glides among the purrgil.

Key to Star Tours’ longevity, and what makes it the rare motion simulator that doesn’t feel rooted in the 1980s, is its ability to create new sensations via its movements. The ride now has more than 250 storyline variations, and when adding to the attraction, Imagineers are looking for ways to heighten the contrast among its various scenes, both tonally and in its maneuvers. Though Star Tours is typically randomized — for the foreseeable future, and definitely throughout Disneyland’s spring Season of the Force promotion — all riders are guaranteed to visit the new location and receive an early-flight transmission from one of the recently added characters.

Din Djarin and Grogu from "The Mandalorian" can now be seen in 3D on Star Tours.

“How do we make each of the places we go have a different color palette?” says Fitzgerald, who then recalls different “Star Wars” planets that can be featured in the attraction’s random programming. “Mustafar is all lava. Kashyyyk is all green jungle. So they feel very different when you get the combos. And then motion-based. Could we do a barrel roll? That’s the fun of doing it, and programming it and trying it. And we needed something else. What have we not done? So with the purrgils, what if we do skiing through the tentacles? We had never done that. So those are the two big motion changes.”

The attraction is also livened up by appearances from Dawnson’s Tano, Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor and a masked Din Djarin from “The Mandalorian.” While the latter is played and portrayed by Pedro Pascal on the Disney+ series, many have noted that the Djarin on “Star Tours” features a slightly different vocal cadence than Pascal, and an Imagineering spokesperson says the company is not revealing its voice actors for the attraction. Nevertheless, “The Mandalorian” moment features some comic relief — and clever 3-D usage — courtesy of Grogu, colloquially refered to as “baby Yoda,” and his penchant to use Force powers to toy with and eat frogs.

The annual awards from the Themed Entertainment Assn. provide a glimpse into where theme parks are heading.

Here are 5 takeaways from the Themed Entertainment Assn.’s annual gathering in Hollywood.

March 20, 2024

The three appear as transmissions that help define the suddenly urgent narrative of Star Tours. “Each one is different,” Fitzgerald says. “Mando and Grogu we played for comedy. And Andor is mysterious. You don’t see his face. You see this thing coming toward you. Is that a friend or foe? And then he pulls his hood and the music changes.” Tano, meanwhile, arrives like an old friend who knows C-3PO and fellow droid R2D2. Riders are advised to pay close attention to the opening cinematic in a ship’s hangar, as there is a new randomized opening that features Tano in a lightsaber battle with Stormtroopers.

As for why the new additions perhaps lean a bit more heavily on “Ahsoka,” as it is that series that features the planet of Seatos and the purrgil, Fitzgerald had a simple answer: yes, it’s the space whales.

With access to early scripts from Lucasfilm, Fitzgerald says he singled out the purrgil scenes. “Reading about that, not knowing what they looked like initially, I was going, that’s going to be really cool.” And, at least for a few seconds, relatively calming.

Before Disney bought Star Wars , the two brands began their courtship with a ride . Star Tours opened in 1987 and has seen many new upgrades and additions over the years . This week, for its Season of the Force event , Disney gave the ride another refresh. And this time, for the first time, it’s with characters from Disney+.

So, starting today, if you are at Disneyland, Walt Disney World, or Disneyland Paris, Star Tours now features characters from Ahsoka, Andor and The Mandalorian . But what’s new? How does it work? io9 was among a group of journalists Disney invited to an early preview of the new Star Tours at Disneyland in Anaheim, so we’ll explain.

How many new Star Tours locations are there?

Though you may have assumed otherwise, only one new, full planet has been added to Star Tours this time around: Seatos from Ahsoka. However, there are three different variations going into that. One featuring Ahsoka (with Rosario Dawson reprising the role), one featuring Cassian Andor (with Diego Luna reprising), and one featuring both the Mandalorian and Grogu.

What can happen on the new Star Tours ?

So, you get on the ride and start to pull out of the spaceport. Here’s where, potentially, your first new change will be. In the past, riders would usually see the Millennium Falcon sitting there as the ship was stopped by Darth Vader, Kylo Ren, or a Probe Droid. And while that’s still more likely to happen than not, if you happen to see a new ship there, you know exactly where this particular ride will take you.

Yes, in some Star Tours rides not only is Ahsoka Tano’s T-6 Jedi Shuttle in the first scene, you can see Ahsoka herself there in the frame. She’s talking to Stormtroopers and, when they discover the Rebel spy, Ahsoka turns on her lightsabers and battles off the troopers before jumping in the ship.

If you see that, you can impress your friends and tell them what’s going to happen next. After you visit one of many, many planets that were previously on the ride (I did it twice on Friday and both times it was podracing on Tatooine from Episode I ), you’ll then get one of the three new transmissions. However, if you got Ahsoka’s ship at the start, you are guaranteed to get Ahsoka in this moment. She’ll say “Hi” to C-3PO, and be excited to see her friend R2-D2 again, before asking to deliver a very important person—the Rebel spy. As she’s talking, we see Chopper and Huyang in the background, getting into shenanigans.

Image for article titled The New Star Tours Update: Everything You Need, and Want, to Know

What are the two other transmissions?

These transmissions is the part of this new Star Tours that will be the most random. If you don’t get Ahsoka, maybe you’ll get the Mandalorian and Grogu. As Mando (who does not sound like it’s Pedro Pascal but we’ve asked Disney for confirmation) talks about a dangerous mission and fight, Grogu is eating one of his frogs. He then spits it out and it floats toward your face in 3D. It’s very cute and funny and just as the one-eyed creature gets close enough to almost touch it, Grogu sucks him back in. “This is the way,” Mando says, and you’re off to the final part of your mission.

Note: unfortunately, we didn’t get to see Cassian’s transmission but, from what we were told, it’s very different tonally than the other two, on purpose. While Ahsoka’s is friendly and Mando’s is funny, Cassian’s is mysterious. He comes out in a hood, lurking in a shadow, then reveals himself to the audience and asks for help with the spy. The key was that each one feels completely unique.

What happens on Seatos?

No matter what transmission you get though, everything is the same after that. Star Tours is off to Seatos, the planet from the final episodes of Ahsoka where they showdown with Thrawn. You arrive in some kind of shadow, only to emerge from the clouds flying among the majestic Purrgil (aka Space Whales). Ahsoka hails you on the side monitor and asks for help with the two ships attacking her, which R2 is more than happy to do. You fly up and around the Purrgil, along their backs, weaving in and out of its fins, and at one point almost even getting sucked in and eaten. Finally, there’s a perfect moment, which R2 uses to land the perfect shot and save the day. Ashoka thanks you, has a special goodbye for her old pal R2, and it’s back home.

Image for article titled The New Star Tours Update: Everything You Need, and Want, to Know

Are the new additions to Star Tours good?

Yes and no. Yes, because anytime you can get to sit down and experience a new piece of Star Wars , especially on a ride that’s been around for almost 40 years, that’s a good thing. However, do I think Seatos as a planet is one of the better destinations in the ride? No. In fact, it may be one of my least favorites. It’s drastically lacking in drama compared to, say, Geonosis, Coruscant, or Naboo. But Ahsoka is great and it’s fun to follow a different ship around.

Oh, and the new transmissions (at least the ones we saw) were phenomenal. Much more detailed and eventful than the previous ones.

How long is the new ride happening?

“For a limited time” everyone who boards Star Tours will get the new planet of Seatos every time, as well as one of the new transmissions. Whether or not that’s just through the Season of the Force event or longer is unclear, and Disney wouldn’t commit to specifics. It might be a park to park decision. But, for at least a few weeks or months, if you go on Star Tours , you’ll get the new stuff.

Then, eventually, the three new transmissions and one new planet will be slotted into the ride’s randomizer. When that happens, it takes the number of possible combinations up to over 250.

Why Seatos over anything else?

In the last few years, thanks to Disney+, Star Wars has seen more new planets, characters, and creatures than ever. So why Seatos and the Purrgil? Well, Tom Fitzgerald, one of Star Tours ’ original Imagineers—who also worked on this one —said it was all about picking a planet that was different from all the others. Something unique. Maybe that’s colors or maybe, in this case, it’s a unique creature. So by choosing Seatos, not only do you get to see these massive, new, unique creatures, but those creatures allow the ride to do moves it’s never done before. That’s how we get the first barrel roll ever in Star Tours as well as a sequence he refers to as the “slalom ski run.”

Image for article titled The New Star Tours Update: Everything You Need, and Want, to Know

How long did the new upgrade take?

Fitzgerald said he and his team first started working on these new additions sometime between 18 months and two years ago.

Could another ride get this treatment?

Since Disney bought Lucasfilm in 2012, Star Tours has been updated about every two or three years. This update is the first since 2019 though—so it makes you wonder, what’s next? And, will it even be Star Tours ?

When Galaxy’s Edge opened in 2019, Disney said that the Millennium Falcon ride, Smugglers Run , was designed in a similar fashion to Star Tours and that the actual visuals in the ride could be changed to take guests on new adventures. But now, that ride has been the same for five years. Could a change be coming? Unfortunately, no one from Imagineering or Lucasfilm would comment, confirm, or deny—but, fingers crossed.

The Ahsoka, Andor and Mandalorian additions to Star Tours: The Adventures Continue are now running at Disneyland, Hollywood Studios, and Disneyland Paris as part of the Season of the Force event. For more on that, check out this link.

8 Awesome Star Wars Experiences at Disneyland Paris (2024)

Star Wars Disneyland Paris

With two huge Star Wars fans in our family, we’ve done everything Star Wars that Disneyland Paris has to offer. From building lightsabers to catapult launches on Star Wars Hyperspace Mountain and crossing over to the Dark Side with Darth Vader, Star Wars fans are in for a treat at Disneyland Paris!

Table of Contents

Star Wars at Disneyland Paris

There’s plenty to keep Star Wars fans entertained in Disneyland Paris!

Star Wars Disneyland Paris

1 | Star Wars Hyperspace Mountain

Location: Discoveryland, Disneyland Park Minimum Height Requirement:  1.20m

Star Wars Hyperspace Mountain is one of the best rides at Disneyland Paris. Going from 0 to 44 miles per hour in 1.8 seconds, riders are launched uphill in the distinctive Columbiad cannon which towers over Discoveryland

Star Wars Disneyland Paris

Riders enlist in the Rebel Alliance and are on a mission to spy on an Imperial Star Destroyer while doing battle with the evil Empire. The ride hurtles through a lightsaber-inspired blaster fire to the backdrop of a Star Wars soundtrack.

Star Wars Disneyland Paris

Star Wars Hyperspace Mountain boasts 3 inversions (Indiana Jones and Avengers Assemble also have inversions at Disneyland Paris).

Star Wars Disneyland Paris tip: Star Wars Hyperspace Mountain was originally Space Mountain and, prior to its Star Wars retheming, it was themed to the Jules Verne book, From the Earth to the Moon.

Star Wars Hyperspace Mountain is one of the most popular rides at Disneyland Paris. Our favourite time to ride is during Extra Magic Hour (guests of Disneyland Paris Disney hotels are able to access the park one hour in advance of regular opening, it’s one of the best perks of staying in a Disney hotel!) when wait times are minimal.

Star Wars Disneyland Paris

2 | Meet the Mandalorian and Grogu

Location: Discoveryland, Disneyland Park (adjacent to Star Tours: The Adventures Continue)

Star Wars Disneyland Paris tip: Meet Mandlorian and Grogu is scheduled to return on March 4 2024 after taking a break in February 2024.

Meeting the Mandalorian and Grogu is one of favourite Disney meet-and-greets ever!

Star Wars Disneyland Paris

Located in Discoveryland, the Mandalorian has his own meet-and-greet set and the interaction is wonderful. A Photopass Photographer is present to capture the photos or you can take your own.

Star Wars Disneyland Paris tip: the Mandalorian and Grogu are extremely popular. Make sure to check the meet and greet times listed in the app.

3 | Star Tours: The Adventure Continues

Location: Discoveryland, Disneyland Park Minimum Height Requirement:  1.02m

Star Wars: The Adventure Continues is a 3D space flight to outer space. As you board the ship, a few mishaps cause it to launch too soon and C-3PO takes the controls as the First Order intercepts in search of a Rebel Spy.

Depending on your mission, there are appearances by Star Wars favourites including Darth Vader, Boba Fett and Admiral Ackbar.

With over 60 mission combinations, we’ve always had a unique ride through the farthest reaches of the galaxy!

Star Wars Disneyland Paris

4| Welcome to Starport: A Star Wars Encounter

‘I’ll show you the way to the Dark Side, in time we can rule the Galaxy!’

Starport: a Star Wars Encounter is another magnificent meet and greet at Disneyland Paris. Darth Vader greets guests in the Starport and, prepare yourself, he is terrifying!

A Photopass Photographer is present to capture the photos or you can take your own.

Star Wars Disneyland Paris

Star Wars at Disneyland Paris tip: Darth Vader has long been the sole host of this meet and greet but, before Christmas 2023, more Star Wars characters were added to the line up including Chewbacca, Kylo Ren, Boba Fett and Rey. It seems to have resumed to Darth Vader in 2024 but time will tell.

5 | Star Traders Boutique

Star Traders is a merchandise store dedicated entirely to Star Wars. It is located at the exit to Star Tours: The Adventure Continues (you can also enter directly from the park).

The store sells everything from lightsabers (including special editions) to clothing and character figures and costumes.

Star Wars Disneyland Paris

6| Build a Lightsaber and Build a Droid

Location: Star Traders, Discoveryland, Disneyland Park Cost: €35 for a single lightsaber, €55 for a double, €15 for a mini Droid Figure

Two of our favourite Star Wars activities at Disneyland Paris are in the Star Traders store – they are Build a Lightsaber and Build a Droid.

Guests can Build a Lightsaber in an 8-step process and you can choose between a single or double lightsaber. First up, you choose an emitter, a blade and a handle and then customise with switches, rings and a hilt sleeve. Then choose a cap and assemble the lightsaber.

Star Wars Disneyland Paris

You can also opt to build a miniature droid – each droid has a body, a head, two legs, a stand leg and a cap. There are a variety of each available to choose from and there are Disney options like Mickey or Goofy ears for the cap!

Star Wars Disneyland Paris

We love both activities and they’re a fun way to purchase souvenirs from the parks.

Star Wars Disneyland Paris

Star Wars Disneyland Paris tip: if you’ve been to Walt Disney World or Disneyland California, then be aware, the Disneyland Paris build a lightsaber is a much more low key experience. It’s an aisle within the Star Tours Store and the light sabers are plastic. It’s awesome for younger kids – our 4 and 6 year old love the experience and the lightsabers hold up well to their extensive play fighting!

Star Wars Disneyland Paris

7 | Star Wars Snacks

There are some fun Star Wars-themed snacks available in Disneyland Paris:

Rocket Cafe

Located in Discoveryland (close to Star Tours: The Adventures Continue/opposite the Mandalorian and Grogu Meet and Greet), Rocket Cafe is a small food kiosk with a Star Wars-themed snack menu.

Star Wars Disneyland Paris

There are delicious Stormtroopers and Darth Vader Waffles served with Nutella or Sugar and a tasty chocolate hazelnut and pistachio Boba Fett shortbread.

Star Wars Disneyland Paris

Cool Station

Another Discoveryland Kiosk, Cool Station is located opposite Buzz Lightyear Laser Blast. It sells a fantastic chocolate hazelnut-filled pistachio Grogu Biscuit. It’s one of the cutest snacks in Disneyland Paris.

Star Wars Disneyland Paris

Cafe Hyperion

The distinctive Cafe Hyperion in Discoverland offers a BB-8 burger-stamped burger.

Disneyland Paris do like to change up the snacks periodically but Star Wars has featured on the menu consistently in recent times .

8 | Stormtroopers

Location: Discoveryland outside Welcome to Starport: A Star Wars Encounter, Disneyland Park

In recent weeks, Stormtroopers have been spotted patrolling in Discoveryland outside the line for Welcome to Starport: A Star Wars Encounter, Disneyland Park (the Darth Vader Meet and Greet).

Everything Star Wars at Disneyland Paris

Here’s everything else you need to know about Star Wars at Disneyland Paris:

Which Star Wars Character can I meet at Disneyland Paris?

At the moment, you can meet Darth Vader, the Mandalorian and Grogu.

If the Stormtroopers are patrolling you might be in luck with an interaction and a photo but they do choose who they stop with – there’s no line or structured meet and greet.

At times there are other Star Wars characters in the mix: as recent as December 2023, Chewbacca, Kylo Ren, Boba Fett and Rey met with guests in the Starport.

Star Wars Disneyland Paris

Is a Star Wars Land coming to Disneyland Paris?

Unfortunately, despite an announcement by Disney in 2018, it doesn’t seem as though a Star Wars Land is on the horizon at Disneyland Paris. There has been no mention of it in recent years, much to the disappointment of Star Wars fans. We love Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge in California and Florida and Rise of the Resistance is one of our all-time favourite rides – we would have loved to see even a small part of this Star Wars Magic coming to Paris!

The current focus is on a Frozen-inspired Land, a new extension to the Walt Disney Studios Park which should open in the next year or two.

Star Wars Disneyland Paris

Is there anything Star Wars themed in Walt Disney Studios or the Disneyland Paris hotels?

Star Wars currently only features in Disneyland Park at Disneyland Paris.

4 thoughts on “8 Awesome Star Wars Experiences at Disneyland Paris (2024)”

I remember waiting just shy of 4 hours to met Mando and Grogu when they first came to Disneyland Paris. And it was still worth it! They are truly amazing. Do you know what the current wait times are?

I’ve never seen Stormtroopers in Disneyland Paris, when did you experience that? Was it for a special event? How exciting!

Totally worth it! I think the lines are still pretty long but the Cast Members cut the line when it’s full and tell guests to return at the next time listed in the app so no one is waiting around for hours at least!

The Stromtroopers have been out on random days so hopefully it becomes a regular thing like the US parks!

Are the Star Wars characters every day, or only on certain days?

Darth Vader is usually there every day but the Stormtroopers only make ad hoc appearances. The Mandalorian and Grogu are scheduled to meet guests everyday but they’ve taken a few extended breaks in recent months – you can see if they’re out on the Disneyland Paris App.

Key Information

REPLACED BY STAR TOURS _ THE ADVENTURE CONTINUES IN MARCH 2017 Virtually identical to the Disneyland original, the Disneyland Paris version of Star Tours takes guests on a virtual journey through the “Star Wars” universe. While the technology, which dates back to 1987, can now appear out-dated, the ride pushed the boundaries of simulator technology when it first opened. The Disneyland Paris version is now the last remaining original Star Tours attraction, with those at Disneyland, Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Tokyo Disneyland having been replaced by the updated Star Tours: The Adventures Continue.

Guests queue through a detailed recreation of a “spaceport”, which is packed with audio-animatronic droids and in-jokes about “Star Wars” and Disney characters. This sets the scene for the ride, which takes guests on a tour to the moon of Endor (seen in “Return of the Jedi”).

After reaching the end of the queue, riders board one of a number of simulators, each of which is designed to resemble the interior of a StarSpeeder 3000 spacecraft. The flight immediately goes awry, with novice pilot Rex accidentally navigating into the midst of a space battle between rebels and the evil Galactic Empire.

The ride system is used to enhance the on-screen action, with the simulator rocking from side-to-side and extensive use of sound effects. Rex himself is physically present, in audio-animatronic form.

Star Tours is presented in a combination of languages. The pre-show videos are primarily in English, as is the dialogue between rebel pilots. However, Rex addresses passengers in French.

How Star Tours Laid the Stage for Disney's Galactic Ambitions

Posted: April 5, 2024 | Last updated: April 5, 2024

Even in the era where the House of Mouse is Star Wars’ home, few things about the galaxy far, far away have defined its relationship with Disney other than Star Tours, the Disney Parks ride that shaped generations of collaborations between Lucasfilm and Mickey Mouse. Now, as Star Tours gets ready to evolve again in Disneyland’s new Season of the Force, we look back at its history—from the ride that almost wasn’t, to the herald of Star Wars’ current interconnected age.

Destination Endor

Star Tours launched at fascinating time in Star Wars’ internal canon in 1987. The movies were long over, and Marvel’s comic book continuation of the story and universe wrapped over the course of the prior year. Plans to keep the similarly legendary Kenner toy series afloat with its own original worldbuilding had fallen through as well. We now know that things were about to change in the next few years: the early ‘90s brought with it the Heir to the Empire trilogy, and with it, the explosive formation of what became the Star Wars Expanded Universe. But Star Tours inadvertently took its own huge step forward: although it wasn’t majorly acknowledged, the ride was actually set after the events of Return of the Jedi, with C-3PO referring to his capture at the hands of the Ewoks in the film as having taken place in the past. Of course, considering that Star Tours included riders seeing the sight of a Death Star under construction, that was actually a wild thing to casually drop at the time. For years the topic was left untouched, even as the Expanded Universe flourished with its own post-film continuity that simply danced around Star Tours having any kind of determinate place within canon. It wasn’t until decades later that Lucasfilm tried to square the circle on the “Death Star III,” a term first officially raised in a 2005 article on the official Star Wars website, placing the ride’s story as taking place during the latter years of the Marvel Star Wars comics.

The Expanded Universe Grows

The year 2005 was already an important one for Star Tours, however. Although as previously mentioned Star Tours launched with elements of the ride teasing other locales for the attraction, the original ride never received updates beyond the Endor adventure. But at Star Wars Celebration III in April 2005, Lucas confirmed, at long last, that the adventures would indeed continue. With the prequel trilogy about to conclude with Revenge of the Sith’s release in May of that year, a new upgrade to Star Tours would be able to incorporate locations and ideas from the prequel trilogy, as well as expand on elements from the original trilogy beyond Endor. The new ride would also use 3D technology to immerse audiences, and no longer would they just visit a single location on each trip—the update would offer dozens upon dozens of potential unique combinations of locales in a single ride. Originally, the sequel ride would draw from six potential locations—Coruscant, Tatooine, Hoth, Naboo, Geonosis, Kashyyyk—after opening at Spaceport THX1138, with visits to different planets interspersed with messages from various Star Wars characters advising visitors about a secret mission to rescue a randomly chosen spy aboard their ride. Not every change would be popular with Disney diehards. Although the upgrade—dubbed Star Tours: The Adventure Continues—would still maintain a lot of elements from the original, one controversial decision was to replace Star Tours’ droid pilot RX-24 (better known as Captain Rex, well before the Clone) as the ride’s “pilot” and instead directly integrate C-3PO and R2-D2 into the ride’s story, rather than just keeping them part of the queue. After shutting down the year prior in 2010 for refurbishment for the overhaul, Star Tours: The Adventure Continues formally debuted at Disney World in Florida in May 2011, before opening at Disneyland that June.

The Adventure Continues

The Adventure Continues carried on as it had launched before everything changed again. Just over a year later, Star Wars was no longer a third party license: Disney was its master. The deal by the studio to acquire Lucasfilm, and develop new Star Wars movies (and re-establish a whole new rebooted continuity along the way) was announced in October 2012, and now Star Tours alone represented a way for Disney to synergize with its new material in its parks. Unlike the prequel era, which wouldn’t be integrated into Star Tours until well after it had concluded, the sequel trilogy came into Star Tours like an event with every release: 2015 brought with it The Force Awakens, and with it a chase sequence on the desert planet Jakku as well as new interstitials featuring Finn and BB-8, as well a tweaked alternative for the opening spacesport docking sequence to include Kylo Ren and First Order stormtroopers instead of Darth Vader and Imperial forces. The years 2017 and 2019 respectively brought with them additions based around The Last Jedi—a visit to the planet Crait inspired by the climax of the film—and The Rise of Skywalker—a return of sorts to the Endor sequence Star Tours began with decades prior, as you rode to the watery moon of Kef Bir and through the wreckage of the second Death Star. With the arrival of material from the new films, Star Tours’ original continuity was diverged to classify sequel-era material as non-canonical, given that the rest of The Adventures Continue’s material was intended to be set between the events of Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. But even in an age of transmedia continuity, that didn’t stop Star Tours from being a vital place for Disney to sell its own era of Star Wars to audiences.

The Disney Era

That brings us to now, and a world where Star Tours is no longer the sole source of Star Wars in Disney’s parks. Five years ago next month, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, an entire hub of Star Wars storytelling, stores, restaurants, and rides, opened at Disneyland and Disney World. But while Star Tours is perhaps not the focus of Disney’s Star Wars ambitions at its parks anymore, it’s still important—even if Captain Rex is now DJing over at Oga’s Cantina instead of piloting a Starspeeder. This week sees the beginning of the 2024 “Season of the Force,” and with it, the addition of new material to Star Tours: The Adventure Continues. As well as an additional location inspired by the events of Ahsoka, the planet Seatos, three new interstitials featuring Andor’s Cassian Andor, Ahsoka’s Ahsoka Tano, and The Mandalorian’s Din Djarin and Grogu will now be incorporated into the ride’s myriad options. Although characters from Disney’s streaming service series have been added to Galaxy’s Edge in recent years as limited-time wandering characters, the latest additions to Star Tours mark the first time these characters and worlds have been brought into parts of the rides themselves—continuing the tradition established with Star Tours’ own sequel trilogy evolution.

New Horizons

Star Tours is itself almost as resilient as the franchise that spawned it. Evolving from an unprecedented exterior partnership to the nostalgic heart of Disney’s connection to Star Wars over the past nearly 40 years, Star Tours isn’t now just a part of Star Wars continuity—from its designs and characters to the faux-company itself being weaved into the tapestry of both eras of the franchise’s expanded canon—but still a vital way to keep the newer and newer elements being added to Star Wars a part of the parks. Galaxy’s Edge, for better or worse, is now itself rooted in a specific setting and moment in Star Wars’ history, creating its own thriving world with its own story to tell, but one still very deliberately connected to a moment within the sequel trilogy’s own tale. The edges of that have begun to fray here and there with every new character that shows up to wander around Batuu—but it’ll never have Star Tours’ adaptability. With more Star Wars happening than ever before, Star Tours can always be there to add a new hero or new world to its roster. After all, the adventure does continue...

In Belgium, Germany and Netherlands the currency that you will need is Euros.

Passengers should exchange any spending money for their holiday before they actually travel. Whilst on tour it is very inconvenient and not all places you will visit will have ATM machines or accept credit/debit cards.

We also advise our passengers to keep some change in coins on them whilst on tour as using toilets in many parts of Europe is not free.

USD, GBP or travellers’ cheques are not widely accepted at locations in this tour.

An important point to note whilst on a touring holiday is that some long journeys are unavoidable especially when travelling from city to city.

It is advisable passengers carry necessities that they may need for the day such as water, dry snacks, cameras etc. with them in their hand luggage.

For this tour it should be noted that the travel times are extensive on this tour.

Please see a summary of the distances you will be covering below:

Above is for indication purposes only

Please also note that not all hotels provide a kettle so if hot water is required for warming milk etc. in the hotel then it is advisable to carry a bottle warmer/kettle as well as a thermos flask. Passengers may also want to carry a small travel iron and hairdryer etc., as many hotel rooms may not have these facilities.

Some hotels in Europe, especially Holland and France will provide two single beds put together as a Double occupancy room, as this sort of configuration allows the hotel to use a room for multi-use, we do contract with such hotels, and you should be prepared for such eventualities.

If you use services such as the phone or mini-bar or pay TV whilst in your room, you will have to pay the hotel directly when you check out; these services are not included in your tour cost.

Other Advisories

The Keukenhof tulip garden visit will be timed, the gardens are very expansive, and the time given will give you a glimpse of the numerous bulbs. It is advisable you go through the Keukenhof website in advance to distinguish what key sights you want to cover in your limited time.

Disneyland® Paris

Disneyland Paris can get busy, especially at peak times, so it makes sense to orientate yourself before you arrive by going onto the website and looking at the latest map. There’s a lot to see so you might like to prioritise your must-do attractions to avoid disappointment. But one should try not missing the famous Disney Parades when the much-loved Disney characters take to the streets for a unique and interactive experience. Please note on this tour you will not be staying in Disney until it closes so you will not see the evening firework, Parade or illuminations. Should you wish to do this, then you will need to make your own way back to the Hotel, and you will miss the dinner and transfers for which no compensation will be due.

The resort itself comprises of two parks: The Disneyland Park, packed with rides and attractions, and the Walt Disney Studios Park. Your tickets will allow you access into any one of these parks.

When you arrive at the park, you might like to consider using the Fastpass service, a free service which helps you to cut down on waiting times for some of the attractions (subject to availability and operation).

Temperatures vary from place to place. Therefore, it is a good idea to check online for average temperatures for the destination(s) being visited, depending on the time of the year. On a multi-destination tour, passengers will likely travel through various weather fronts; whilst in Switzerland, during excursions to mountain tops, passengers may experience temperatures between 0 °c and 2 °c while simultaneously experiencing temperatures of over 30 °c whilst they are in France.

Passengers can be well prepared by carrying appropriate clothing, footwear and accessories. Passengers should also be aware that during the winter months, most of the sightseeing will be in the dark as, in Europe, the day becomes dark very early during winter.

Wheelchairs & Child Seats

We will accept lightweight manual wheelchairs for travel, subject to them being capable of being stowed in the luggage hold of the coach. It is also essential that a family member is also on tour to push their wheelchair. It should be noted Mt Titlis & Eiffel Tower are not fully accessible for wheelchair users. In addition, Brussels, Luzern, Lion Monument, Pisa, Rome, Venice, and Florence will have cobbled streets, which may not be suitable for wheelchairs.

In most of Europe, the use of child seats in coaches is mandatory for children under the age of 12 or who are shorter than 150 cm. Children under 7 years old or less than 125 cm tall must use a child seat with a harness or a restraint system. Children between 7 and 12 years old or between 125 and 150 cm tall must use a booster seat or a seat cushion. It is the responsibility of the child's parent or guardian to provide the appropriate child seat for their child.

Understand [ edit ]

Founded in 1716 as a fortress on the Imperial Russia's expanding southern frontier, by 1850s Omsk grew to become the capital of Western Siberia and parts of Central Asia . The construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway in the late 1890s brought a rapid development boom, culminating in an extravagant 1910s World Fair, around the time of which Omsk acquired much of its neoclassical architectural heritage. Largely due to its strategic importance as the gateway to Siberia and the Russian Far East , Admiral Kolchak of the anti-Soviet White Army chose Omsk as his base and "capital of Russia" in 1918–1919.

Today, Omsk is Russia's seventh largest city with a population of over 1.5 million. An Omsk visit is one of the highlights of a trip to Siberia for the city's attractive and bustling 19th century center, and its numerous cultural opportunities. Literature lovers will find a special interest in Omsk, as it was Dostoevsky's home during the majority of his exile from Saint Petersburg .

Map

By foot [ edit ]

The city center around Lyubinsky prospekt is easily walkable and is best explored on foot. In autumn 2017 Lenin St south of the River Om is being dug up and is difficult to walk along, but businesses there and the cathedral remain open.

By taxi [ edit ]

Taxis are plentiful and there are several taxi companies operating in Omsk.

See [ edit ]

The historical part of town is centered on Lyubinsky prospekt, near the confluence of the Om and Irtysh rivers. It is lined with century-old buildings of former merchant salons, residences, and larger commercial, government and religious establishments. The area now has some of the poshest shopping and the best nightlife in the city.

Ulica Krasnyh Zor' (aka Nikol'skij prospekt) leads from the Cossacks' cathedral to a few blocks of historical carved-wood houses. This street can give an idea what Omsk and Siberia used to be like for centuries before industrialization. Unfortunately, these houses are not yet protected as cultural heritage landmarks and may eventually be demolished.

Religious buildings [ edit ]

  • St. Nicholas Cossack Cathedral , ul. Lenina, 27 , ☏ +7 3812-315748 . Built in 1843, it is one of the oldest churches in Siberia. During communist times, it was used as a cinema and concert hall.
  • Dormition Cathedral (Uspenskij sobor) , ul. Internacional'naja, 12 , ☏ +7 3812249065 . Built in the 1890s, it is one of the largest churches in Siberia.

Buy [ edit ]

Omsk is rich in shopping. There is a big difference between the rich and the poor in the city, and this is visible in its shopping malls. While there are shops with extremely cheap goods, there are also modern, upscale malls where every shop is very expensive; a simple shirt at one of these stores could be £100, for example, and a handbag £200. Nevertheless, Omsk offers some great shops with lots of goods.

Nightclubs [ edit ]

  • Angar Kemerovo st., 1/3  8 381 290-57-77
  • [dead link] Zanzibar Nochnoy Klub , ul. Lukashevicha, 10В , ☏ +7 381 278-11-51 .

Stay safe [ edit ]

Dangerous areas of the city are Neftyaniki (town of oilmen), Amurskiy posyolok (Amur settlement), Port Arthur, Staryi Kirovsk (Old Kirovsk), and the area of the Omsk tire plant.

Connect [ edit ]

Consulates [ edit ], go next [ edit ].

Omsk is a convenient hub for several regional attractions. Distances are large and locals will consider a city 700km away to be 'nearby'. However, trains are reliable.

  • Tobolsk and Tomsk are the oldest cities of Siberia. Because the main transportation arteries originally bypassed them, the towns stayed small, avoiding the typical Soviet development, and retaining their unique picturesque characters. They are reachable by overnight train, or, in the case of Tobolsk , by speed jet boat along the Irtysh River (10-12 hours). Irregular boats also operate to Khanty-Mansiysk and Salekhard , within the Arctic Circle , a 2783 km journey taking six days (see timetable ). This is the best way to see the West Siberian terrain, grand rivers, and rural lifestyle. For some towns, this boat is the only access to the outside world.
  • Barnaul (16 hours by train or a 1½ hour flight) is the gateway to the Altai mountains and national parks.
  • Kazakhstan is accessible by train - Petropavlovsk (4 hours), Astana (12 hours), or bus - Pavlodar (8 hours).

At the beginning of the 20th century, Russian chemist and photographer Sergey Prokudin-Gorsky developed a complex process for vivid color photography. His vision of photography as a form of education and enlightenment was demonstrated with special clarity through his images of architectural monuments in the historic sites throughout the Russian heartland.

In June 1912, Prokudin-Gorsky ventured into western Siberia as part of a commission to document the Kama-Tobolsk Waterway, a link between the European and Asian sides of the Ural Mountains. The town of Tyumen served as his launching point for productive journeys that included Shchadrinsk (established in 1662 on the Iset River) and Yalutorovsk (on the Tobol River).

Omsk origins

Founded in 1659 at a former Tatar settlement, Yalutorovsk was the construction site of a massive railroad bridge across the Tobol River, part of the new Tyumen-Omsk rail link that opened on the Trans-Siberian Railway in October 1913 (Before then, the railroad to Siberia went through the southern Urals town of Chelyabinsk ).

Although Prokudin-Gorsky did not travel to Omsk, his photographs of Yalutorovsk show the making of a crucial rail link to the “capital” of western Siberia. I, however, reached Omsk in the late Summer of 1999.

Omsk (current population around 1,110,000) was founded in 1716 as a fort on the middle reaches of the Irtysh River. During the 18th century, its primary purpose was to protect Russia’s southern border and establish authority over the aboriginal steppe tribes.

Rising regional importance

Although administratively subordinate to Tobolsk throughout the 18th century, Omsk gained increasing power in the 19th century. From 1808 until 1917, Omsk served as the headquarters of all Siberian Cossack troops and, in 1822, a separate Omsk Province was formed.

Shortly thereafter, construction began on the Cossack Cathedral of St. Nicholas (1833-1840), based on a plan by the noted Russian architect Vasily Stasov. The St. Nicholas Cathedral was severely disfigured during the Soviet period, but has now been restored. It is, once again, the repository of one of the area’s great relics, the banner of Yermak , the late 16th-century Cossack leader who first established Muscovy’s presence in Siberia.

In 1865-1870, Omsk witnessed the construction of another cathedral, dedicated to the Elevation of the Cross. It, too, survived the devastation of the 1930s and was reopened for worship in November 1943. In addition to its Orthodox churches, Omsk has mosques (the administration of the Iman of Siberia is located in Omsk), a remarkable wooden synagogue and a large Baptist church built in 1907.

Omsk’s dark history

Its pervasive military presence linked Omsk with the Siberian exile system. The most famous of the fortress’ exiles was the writer Fyodor Dostoevsky, condemned in 1849 for associating with intellectual “radicals” in St. Petersburg. In January 1850, Dostoevsky arrived under guard at the Omsk fort and, for the most part of three years (1850-54), he lived the harrowing existence of a convict sentenced to hard labor, which included unloading barges on the Irtysh River.

When his health broke down under the physical and psychological strain, Dostoevsky was hospitalized under the care of a sympathetic medic. It was during his stay in the infirmary that Dostoevsky began the writing of one of his seminal works, ‘Notes from the House of the Dead’. A few buildings still survive from that time, including one of the fortress gates.

During the latter part of the 19th century, Omsk began a period of heady expansion, as the town became a transportation center for Russia’s vast interior. Regular steamboat service along the Irtysh River to Tobolsk began in 1862.

But, it was the railroads that made Omsk a boomtown. In 1894-1895, Omsk was linked by the Trans-Siberian Railroad to Chelyabinsk in the west and Novonikolaevsk (later Novosibirsk) in the east. In 1913, another rail line was completed from Omsk to Tyumen in what would become the new Siberian mainline. By the beginning of the 20th century, the population of Omsk had tripled to over 60,000 inhabitants.

This development as a transportation nexus led to a surge in the city’s commercial district.  What had formerly been a provincial garrison town consisting primarily of wooden structures punctuated with large churches, now became a preeminent site for banks, educational institutions, industry and retail trade in Siberia.

International appeal

In addition to branch offices for major banks and firms in Moscow and St. Petersburg, Omsk received investment from companies in the United States, Germany and Great Britain. The central part of Omsk had buildings whose design rivaled Moscow’s business district. Many of the new commercial projects were built in styles derived from the Florentine Renaissance.

Cultural institutions also took root. In 1901-05, a large theater was built in a florid Beaux Arts style designed by the architect Iliodor Khvorinov. The theater still stands as an object of civic pride. Wooden houses with decorative detailing also grace the city, but their number has steadily decreased under the pressures of urban development and inadequate maintenance.

During World War I, the then strategically located Omsk grew still further and, by 1917, the city’s population had reached 100,000. Following the October Revolution, Bolshevik power was proclaimed almost immediately in Omsk, but, with little local support, the Bolsheviks were driven from the city in June 1918.

Opposition to the Bolsheviks was fatally divided and, in November 1918, a military coup installed a dictatorship headed by Admiral Alexander Kolchak (1874-1920), a renowned polar explorer and gifted naval commander, but incapable of dealing with the chaos of the Russian civil war (The mansion where Kolchak had his headquarters is a prominent landmark).

For almost a year, Omsk could be considered the “capital” of the White forces in the Russian Civil War. In November 1919, Kolchak’s forces were driven from Omsk. In 1921, Omsk became one of the centers of the American Relief Agency during the terrible famine that afflicted vast territories in the Volga basin.

With its economy shattered and the countryside still recovering, Omsk struggled through the 1920s and achieved renewed industrial growth in the 1930s. Like many Siberian cities, it expanded rapidly during World War II as an evacuation haven and as a center of transportation and production.

Development of the city’s military-industrial complex continued after the war and, by the end of the 1970s, the population exceeded 1,000,000 – a benchmark of major significance. Omsk also became a center of the oil and gas industry.

The city’s major cultural institutions include a leading state university, established in 1974 and, since 2004, named in honor of Fyodor Dostoevsky. Omsk also has one of the largest regional libraries in Siberia and a major art museum--named in honor of painter Mikhail Vrubel, an Omsk native – that now occupies three landmark buildings in the center of the city.

In the early 20th century, Russian photographer Sergey Prokudin-Gorsky developed a complex process for color photography. Between 1903 and 1916, he traveled through the Russian Empire and took over 2,000 photographs with the process, which involved three exposures on a glass plate. In August 1918, he left Russia and ultimately resettled in France, where he was reunited with a large part of his collection of glass negatives, as well as 13 albums of contact prints. After his death in Paris in 1944, his heirs sold the collection to the Library of Congress. In the early 21st century, the Library digitized the Prokudin-Gorsky Collection and made it freely available to the global public. A few Russian websites now have versions of the collection. In 1986, the architectural historian and photographer William Brumfield organized the first exhibit of Prokudin-Gorsky photographs at the Library of Congress. Over a period of work in Russia beginning in 1970, Brumfield has photographed most of the sites visited by Prokudin-Gorsky. This series of articles juxtaposes Prokudin-Gorsky’s views of architectural monuments with photographs taken by Brumfield decades later.
