We enjoyed the whole trip a lot

Overall we enjoyed the whole trip a lot. Moscow is beautiful and clean. Thank you very much for your patience and excellent organization of this tour. Everything ran very smoothly and according to schedule. The guides met us on time at hotels or at our train carriage on arrival. They all spoke good English, had a good local knowledge and were very kind and helpful.

The tour lived up to all expectations

I’m most pleased with Travel All Russia in arranging our ‘Volga Dream’ Russia tour, I would recommend using your services again as every aspect of our tour went off without a hitch. The communication between our tour representative was excellent as we required additional days on both ends of our tour. The visa process and the logistics were flawlessly implemented.

Best and worry-free travel to Russia! - Treasures of Two Capitals Tour

When my husband and I decided we wanted to travel Russia, I did my research and came across Travel All Russia which had very good reviews. It certainly did not disappoint. We chose the Treasures of Two Capitals tour. Booking and coordinating with them were seamless from start to finish. Questions were promptly answered, either through email or a phone call and changes if any, were quickly updated.

We are so happy to have gone on this trip! - June 2017

Thank you for all you did to make our trip spectacular! Both ballets were excellent and totally enjoyed by my son and I.

There is so much to see and do and I feel we did, with our wonderful guides a great job beginning to see all.

The St. Regis Hotel was so warm and friendly! Food was excellent and so convenient to the Kremlin, Bolshoi Theater, St. Basil's, etc. Thank you!

The Petro Palace was okay. Food was not the greatest but the staff were friendly. Location was great, however.

Everything went really smoothly - Private St. Petersburg Shore Excursion

A big thank you for our tour. We were looked after very well by our guide and the driver. They were both outstanding. The itinerary was the best. Everything went really smoothly

It was a great experience - Treasures of Two Capitals (5 star), June 2017

It was a great experience. The guides were knowledgeable and spot on time. Especially the guide in St. Petersburg seemed to get us to places with great timing. We beat the majority of crowds. Maybe that’s partly a result of being a small group, being that we didn’t have to wait for stragglers. The weather cooperated and we didn’t get caught in any rain storms.

Everybody in our group got along perfectly. We were all experienced travelers and shared information on places we’d been to. The ladies are now sharing pictures of our trip to Russia via email.

St. Petersburg Tours and Trips

St. Petersburg Tours and Trips

St. Petersburg, often hailed as Russia's cultural epicenter, is a city where the sheer density of historical monuments, museums, and palaces is astonishing. Nestled along the banks of the Neva River, this city has been a source of inspiration for countless writers, poets, musicians, and artists throughout its 300-year history, becoming a true reflection of Russian culture. Founded by Peter the Great, along with subsequent Russian rulers, St. Petersburg is adorned with magnificent palaces that today stand as custodians of the nation's rich history and art. St. Petersburg tours and day trips offer a chance to immerse oneself in this grandeur.

The city's allure extends beyond the famed Nevsky Prospekt and Vasilyevsky Island. Tours often include excursions to neighboring areas such as Peterhof, renowned for its stunning palace and golden fountains, the regal Gatchina Palace, or Tsarskoe Selo, where the esteemed Russian poet Pushkin once studied. The surrounding region is dotted with a plethora of historical monuments from the 18th and 19th centuries.

An equally captivating aspect of St. Petersburg is its proximity to the Gulf of Finland and the network of canals that crisscross the city. The experience of boat and steamer rides, exploring the embankments, piers, and bridges, is unparalleled, especially the breathtaking nighttime spectacle of the drawbridges. Our St. Petersburg tours offer all these experiences and more. Choose any tour, and you're sure to fall in love with this city, a sentiment that will last long after your journey ends!

We booked a private tour for 6 friends seeing St Petersburg, rather than take the ship excursions on the Azura. We had Alex as our tour guide with Nikoli for the driver. We visited a good selection of Palaces and sites including the Faberge Museum. It was a well planned tour and we all had a lovely time. However do be aware of pickpockets Alex did warn us, but one of our group almost had their wallet stolen. So easy to lose concentration in such a beautiful city. Also be aware that the lovely trinkets in the shops that Alex took us to often are hand painted and can be very expensive. Do keep a check of the exchange rate before you purchase. TJ Travel made the booking process very easy and always responded in good time to all enquires. Would recommend this company.

With 3 days in St Petersburg we chose T J Travel to show us the highlights and the Fabergé Museum. At much less cost than cruise-arranged tours, we greatly enjoyed being part of a small group (10-12) led by Elena, a personable and caring guide with excellent English and a comprehensive knowledge of every place visited. Nothing was too much trouble for her or the driver. The included lunches were certainly not of Michelin standard but adequate, allowing a full 9.30am-5pm (or later) programme which gave us a good feel for the city. Transport to and from the ballet was also provided by the firm. There can certainly be no better way to get a first introduction to this amazing city

I leave St. Petersburg with a sense of longing. It is ronantic city and very beautiful. My family spent 3 days here. The weather was cold, but thanks to j-travel-spb, our 3-day tour was well organized. We spent short time outside. I liked restaurants where we were brought by our guide Anatoly. Anatoly is cool guide - a lot of jokes. I will remember this tour with j-travel-spb. Thank

On this unique 7-day Moscow to St Petersburg tour, you'll immerse yourself in the art, history and culture of Russia and explore the contrasting styles of her old and new capitals – the majestic cities of Moscow and St Petersburg . Your tour begins in Moscow, the mega-metropolis whose blend of Imperial decadence, Soviet austerity and vibrant contemporary energy is sure to entertain and enthral.

Moscow and St Petersburg Tour Highlights:

  • Panoramic Tour of Moscow: See Moscow beyond the postcard images on a private excursion by car through the city streets including a drive along the banks of the Moskva River. Visit the famous Bolshoi Theatre, pass by Gorky Park and the Novodevichy Convent and admire the city from on high at the Sparrow Hill observation platform.
  • Moscow Guided Walking Tour: Immerse yourself in the atmosphere of one of the world’s biggest metropolises and discover local haunts on foot, including the Red Square, the Kremlin and the multi-coloured domes of St Basil’s Cathedral.
  • St Petersburg Walking Tour: Admire the spectacular urban architecture, old-world grandeur and buzzing vibe on a guided walking tour of St Petersburg, including a stroll along its lively high street, Nevsky Prospekt
  • Take a hydrofoil boat trip to the World Heritage-listed Peterhof Palace and Park
  • Marvel at some of the most esteemed treasures among the 3 million works of art on a guided tour of St Petersburg’s State Hermitage Museum
  • Enjoy a day excursion to Tsarkoe Selo (the Tsar’s village) in the charming suburb of Pushkin, home of the extravagant Catherine Palace and the stately Alexander Palace.

Get acquainted with the Russian capital over three and half days, discovering Moscow's most iconic landmarks and the extraordinary people and stories behind them. Marvel at the  Red Square , the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral and stroll along famous Arbat Street. Take in the sheer size of this global mega-city on a panoramic mini-coach tour and rub shoulders with the locals as we explore Moscow's historic city streets on foot. We've prepared a fantastic selection of optional activities for your evenings out exploring Moscow's vibrant cultural and artistic scene. Let us arrange a sumptuous dinner cruise along the Moskva River or an unforgettable night at the opera or Russian ballet in the world-renowned Bolshoi Theatre.

The second half of our tour will show you a different side to urban life in Russia. From Moscow, we'll travel to St Petersburg on the Sapsan, a high-speed rail line connecting two cities 700km apart in a four-hour journey.

With half the population of Moscow, St Petersburg is calm and relaxed in comparison. While Moscow was the seat of Soviet power, St Petersburg has long served as a window to the western world and is the most European of Russia's major cities. It's also extraordinarily beautiful - a riveting metropolis of canals and bridges often referred to as the 'Venice of the North'. St Petersburg is synonymous with imperial grandeur and elegance. "Piter" (as it is fondly called by the locals) is overflowing with history, home to gilded palaces, splendid 18th and 19th-century avenues and enormous royal estates just outside of town. Take in the city’s architectural highlights, discover its classical riches and check out its lively contemporary art scene.

st petersburg russia tours

Day 1 Moscow: Arrival

Welcome to Moscow, the monumental capital of Russia! On arrival at the airport, you’ll be met by a friendly driver and transferred to your centrally located hotel. Spend the rest of the day relaxing in the hotel or getting acquainted with the local area on your own.

As an option* , we suggest you spend the evening on a sumptuous dinner cruise, taking in the sights and sounds of this mesmerising city by night.

Day 2 Moscow: Tretyakov Gallery and city tour

Today’s tour is designed as an overview of the city, to give you a sense of Moscow’s sheer size, and an impression of how the capital has changed throughout the ages. Start with a tour of the 19th century Tretyakov State Gallery, the world’s foremost depository of Russian fine art, containing over 130,000 exhibits, with work by Rublev, Kandinsky, Repin and many others. We’ll get to the gallery via a Metro Tour, stopping on the way to marvel at some of the most elaborately decorated stations of the world-famous Moscow subway system. You’ll visit the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, one of the most important churches in Russia. Besides the cathedral is a bridge with fantastic views of this part of the city. Next, we explore the Red October district, and a vibrant hangout for Moscow’s youth, with its old industrial alleyways and lovingly restored courtyards lined with chic cafes, designer studios and galleries.

After a break, the second half of the day consists of a wandering sojourn through some of Moscow’s most famous streets and squares. Later, we suggest you relax in one of the city’s quirky cafes before an evening stroll along the main streets. Moscow never sleeps, so you’ll always find something to capture your attention.

Day 3 Moscow: Kremlin and Red Square

Our in-depth Moscow discovery starts with a walking tour of the historical city centre. Enjoy Moscow’s main attractions including the Red Square, the State Historical Museum, GUM (a luxurious shopping centre), the colourful Saint Basil's Cathedral and other sights. Have a delicious lunch in one of the multiple downtown cafes or restaurants and continue the day with a tour of the Kremlin and Armoury Museum, famous for Tsar regalia such as jewellery, crowns, orbs and sceptres, royal carriages, huge arms and armour collection, gifts to the Russian Tsars from leaders of the West of the Far East, as well as an illustrious collection of Faberge Eggs.

Take your time to relax as we prepare something special as an option* for this evening. After dinner at our hotel, we head out for an unforgettable night at the opera or the Russian ballet at the iconic Bolshoi Theatre.

Day 4 Moscow to St Petersburg by train

Your last half-day in Moscow is free for you to enjoy this magnificent city on your own. Or you may opt-in for an optional* excursion to Izmailovo Kremlin and Craft and Flea Market. An open-air cultural complex, the Izmailovo “Kremlin” (actually a modern building designed in the Imperial style) is a colourful complex home to several interactive museums.

After lunch, you will be transferred to a train station and board a Sapsan – a Russian high-speed train, which will whisk us to our next destination, St Petersburg, completing the 700km journey in four hours. Upon arrival, you’ll be met by a driver and transferred to your centrally located hotel.

Day 5 St Petersburg: Hermitage and city tour

Meet your friendly and knowledgeable St Petersburg guide in the lobby and begin your discovery of Russia’s ‘Cultural Capital’ with a walking tour of the city’s most popular attractions. Your walking tour will include Nevsky Prospect, St. Petersburg’s fanciful high street, the Anichokov Bridge and Palace, viewpoints over the Fontaka and Moika Rivers, St. Isaac’s Cathedral, Palace Square and the Senate Square, with its bronze horseman monument to Peter the Great and the Church of the Spilled Blood. You’ll also get the chance to stroll the grounds of the magnificent Peter and Paul Fortress on the banks of the Neva River, a burial place for the Russian emperors from Peter the Great to Nicholas II.

Take a walk at the Palace Square and admire the beauty and grandeur of the Winter Palace, the most glorious Tsar residence in Russia and now a part of the vast Hermitage museum. Enjoy a private guided tour of the Hermitage museum. Ask as many questions as you can think of while exploring this colossal repository of classical and modern art, including the world’s largest collection of paintings.

As an option* for this evening, we invite you to enjoy the traditional Russian dance performance in Nikolaevsky Palace.

Day 6 St Petersburg: Peterhof

Take a day trip to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Peterhof (Petrodvorets). We’ll travel by fast boat, in order to escape the morning traffic jams. Once the opulent summer resort of the Romanovs, today Peterhof is a huge open-air museum and a testament to Peter the Great’s contribution to the city’s development. Peter's daughter, Empress Elizabeth, who ordered the expansion of the Grand Palace, greatly extended the park and the famous system of fountains, including the majestic Grand Cascade.

As an option*

1. Enjoy a self-guided tour of the recently opened Faberge Museum, a private collection of over 4,000 Faberge Eggs and other bejewelled objects of desire, elegantly displayed inside the stunning Shuvalov Palace.

2. A tour of Yusupov Palace on the Moika River, best known for being the scene of the assassination of Rasputin. Having survived much of the WWII destruction that wreaked havoc on many of St Petersburg’s suburbs, it’s one of the area’s few aristocratic homes to have retained many of its original interiors. This tour also allows us to visit Mikhaliovsky Castle, an unusual architectural phenomenon featuring an eclectic mix of styles. Even stranger is its connection to Emperor Paul I, one of the most eccentric and controversial figures of Russian royalty. It was here that Paul was murdered in his own bedroom, only 40 days after moving in.

Day 7 St Petersburg: Tsarskoye Selo and departure

Experience the extravagance of the Imperial rulers on an excursion to the suburban estates of the Romanov Tsars. Tsarskoye Selo (Tsar’s village) is now part of the nearby town of Pushkin and is one of St Petersburg’s finest attractions. Amid exquisite parks and gardens, you’ll find the baroque Catherine Palace, a dazzling testament to Catherine’s love of luxury and royal excess. We’ll also see the lavishly gilded Amber Room, containing over six tonnes of amber, and the neoclassical Alexander Palace, whose tumultuous history paints a fascinating portrait of the Romanov family.

This evening marks the end of our Moscow and Saint Petersburg tour. In the evening you’ll be transferred to the airport. Say farewell to this beautiful country… until next time!

Testimonials

Jose Romero Guatemala

Thank you so much for all your support and kindness.

Both of our guides, Elena in St. Petersburg and Max in Moscow, were very knowledgeable and professional. Now, I am assuming that the nature of the Russian people is not to be very warm, but for us, as people from Latin America, they both seemed cold and distant. However, I want to also emphasize that we have absolutely no complaints concerning the quality of their service, as I am guessing it is a matter of idiosyncrasy.

The immigration officers at both airports, St. Petersburg and Moscow, were very unfriendly. I know this is a subject out of the control of any travel agency, but the Russian government should improve this initial and last impressions to visitors.

Overall, we had a wonderful experience on our tour in Russia, and actually, I would really like to come back and see more of Russia in the future…Thank you so much for all your support and kindness… All the best for you…!!

Natalie Tiffany Indonesia

We very much enjoyed our trip to St Petersburg/Moscow and all ran smoothly.

For friends considering travel to Russia to visit St Petersburg/Moscow I would certainly recommend they contact you. I am aware that you also arrange travel to some of the less well-known locations and while we are keen on a range of outdoor activities.

The only small hiccup was the driver was not obvious when we arrived in Moscow on the train from St Petersburg and eventually turned up after 10-15 minutes. I suspect that Moscow traffic may have been responsible. Perhaps we would have preferred to start each day a little earlier particularly if it would have been possible to arrive at some of the main attractions when they first opened for the day when perhaps less crowded.

Thanks again for making this a successful trip and I would be happy to recommend 56th Parallel to others. Best Regards Stephen.

Why Go To St. Petersburg

St. Petersburg stands at the geographic and cultural borders of the west and east. While the city's appearance was influenced by the intricate and ordered architecture of Western Europe, it is still infused with a vibrant and persevering Russian spirit. St. Petersburg largely owes its dualistic nature to its founder, Peter the Great, an unabashed lover of all things European. In the early 1700s, Peter commissioned the city's streets and architecture to resemble his favorite western cities.

And the results of the czar's great experiment? A grand European-style city, replete with long boulevards, narrow canals and grand public squares. It's also an epicenter of distinctly Russian culture, as the place where literature and music greats like Dostoyevsky, Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev all found their voice. Moscow might be known for its luxury and decadence, but St. Petersburg offers compromise between the expensive tastes of Russia's capital and the often-overrated (and just plain crowded) cities of Western Europe.

St. Petersburg Travel Tips

Best months to visit.

The best time to visit St. Petersburg is from mid-June to September. Although it's expensive, St. Petersburg's near 24 hours of sunshine and White Nights celebrations during the summer months are not to be missed. Summers are generally cool but pleasant, with low temperatures dropping to the 50s and highs hovering around 70 degrees, so be sure to pack accordingly. Traveling to St. Petersburg in the winter is rare; days are short, and temperatures will dip well below freezing into the teens.

Weather in St. Petersburg

Data sourced from the National Climatic Data Center

What You Need to Know

  • Bring your Russian dictionary English is widely spoken in major hotels and restaurants, but you'll find very few English speakers outside the tourist districts. You'll hear Russian and see Cyrillic almost exclusively, so it's best to be familiar with the alphabet before your trip.
  • Carry change for restrooms While St. Petersburg once had reputation for inadequate, ill-equipped public restrooms, the city has improved its facilities. However, use of restrooms in some public spaces, such as parks and shopping malls, may require a small payment (around 30 rubles or 50 cents).
  • Breathe easy Thanks to legislation passed in 2013, bars, restaurants and public transportation are now nonsmoking spaces, making secondhand smoke less of an issue for visitors. However, public sidewalks are another story.

How to Save Money in St. Petersburg

  • Invest in a St. Petersburg Card With the St. Petersburg Card , you'll enjoy free admission to more than 80 museums and tours, including the Peter and Paul Fortress , Peterhof and the Russian Museum , among others. Plus, you can use the card to pay your fare on public transportation. St. Petersburg Cards can be purchased in two-, three-, five- or seven-day increments.
  • Book early Making your hotel reservations up to a year in advance – especially if you intend to visit during June's White Nights celebration – can save your wallet some pain.
  • Protect your pockets As in many large cities, pickpockets are prevalent in St. Petersburg. Keep a close eye on your belongings in crowded areas, such as Nevsky Prospekt and the metro.

Culture & Customs

English is spoken in major hotels and restaurants, but you'll find mostly Russian speakers in the more local areas like the market or small inns. Some helpful Russian greetings include the informal "hello" ( priv-EYET ), the formal "hello" ( ZDRA-stvooy-te ), the informal "goodbye" ( pah-KAH ), and the formal "goodbye" ( Dah svih-DA-nee-ye ). Saying "thank you" ( Spa-SEE-ba) is always nice as well.

The ruble is the official currency of Russia. One U.S. dollar is equivalent to about 64 rubles. Plan to check the current exchange rate before your trip. While you might want cash for some purposes (purchasing metro tokens, for instance), you'll find that most restaurants, stores and hotels accept credit cards. Currency exchanges in airports generally offer less favorable rates than banks. ATMs are common in Russian cities, so your debit card might work (though you should check with your bank before you go regarding fees and exchange rates).

Tipping for service is common practice in Russia, and tips of around 15% are typical.

What to Eat

While it's true that visitors can still find classic Russian culinary staples like borscht, stroganoff, cabbage stew and caviar on menus around the city, travelers will also enjoy more contemporary dishes as well. And fortunately for visitors, food prices are more reasonable in St. Petersburg compared to Moscow .

You'll find hundreds of culinary hot spots in St. Petersburg, especially along Nevsky Prospekt, ranging from luxurious eateries to sprawling, local markets. If you're looking for an affordable snack on the go, try a Russian crepe, or blini. This Russian pancake is usually stuffed with butter, caviar or other fillings and is a treat for the adventurous foodie. You'll find it at street vendors around the city. To acquaint yourself with local produce, meats and cheeses, pay a visit to the Kuznechnyy Rynok (Kuznechny Market) a favorite among tourists for its honey vendors and plentiful souvenirs.

If you're craving a classic Russian meal, consider Literary Café on Nevsky Prospekt, which once played host to the likes of Pushkin and Dostoyevsky. For a more modern take on Russian fare, head to Hamlet + Jacks for dishes like Baltic herring and Siberian venison. And for Georgian cuisine, Phali Hinkali is a top spot thanks to its hearty dishes. If you're celebrating a special occasion, or just want to treat yourself to a memorable meal, critics and travelers suggest making a reservation at Palkin , which is known for its elegant dining room and fusion of Russian and French cuisines. Other well-reviewed eateries include Probka (Italian), Bekitzer (Israeli) and Etnos Café (Georgian).

St. Petersburg has a mixed reputation when it comes to safety, but most agree that it has improved from the chaotic time immediately following the fall of the Soviet Union. Discrimination against ethnic groups, specifically individuals of Asian or African descent, is still reportedly an issue in Russia, as is discrimination against LGBTQ individuals. Government officials warn against traveling alone at night to avoid violent confrontations.

In October 2019, the U.S. State Department issued an advisory urging increased caution in Russia because of possible terrorism and arbitrary enforcement of laws. However, these mainly applied to specific areas (such as the North Caucasus for terrorism and occupied portion of Ukraine for abuses by authorities). With respect to St. Petersburg specifically, the State Department noted possible delays in services for U.S. citizens because of reductions in diplomatic personnel. According to the State Department, you can be detained by Russian police for not having your passport with you (police in Russia do not need to show probable cause to stop, question or detain you). Plan to carry your passport with you at all times. Visit the State Department's website for more information.

When walking around, you'll also want to be very careful when crossing roads, as drivers don't always yield to pedestrians here. Use crosswalks and only cross when vehicles have come to a complete stop. Several travel sources advise tourists not to drink the tap water in St. Petersburg due to the antiquated pipes and high metal levels in the tap water. To avoid illness, only drink filtered or bottled water.

Getting Around St. Petersburg

The best way to get around St. Petersburg is by public transportation; otherwise, you can walk around Nevsky Prospekt, the main thoroughfare. There's an extensive bus and metro system with lines that run throughout the center and into the city's outskirts. The tram or trolley is best for short journeys through downtown. For trips to the suburbs, try the metro system. Rental cars are available at the Pulkovo Airport (LED), but acquiring the proper driving documents can be a hassle. Taxis are also a prevalent (though, at times, unsafe) way to move around.

From the airport, a taxi can cost anywhere from 600 to 1500 rubles (or about $9.50 to $24), depending on your destination. Taxi Pulkovo is the preferred company; you'll see Taxi Pulkovo stands in the arrivals area of the airport. However, several recent travelers have been overcharged for taxi trips between the airport and the city. Many recommended relying on smartphone apps instead to ensure a fair price.

Entry & Exit Requirements

Acquiring a visa to travel in Russia is a bit more complicated and expensive than visiting other countries. Every foreign traveler entering Russia must have a Russian-based sponsor (like a hotel, tour company, university or relative). In addition to a valid U.S. passport, you must also obtain a travel visa from a Russian embassy or consulate prior to arriving in Russia. If you plan to stay in Russia for more than seven days, you have to register your visa and migration card (the white paper document given by the border police on first entry to Russia) with the Federal Migration Service. Tourists visas start at $160 per person. You can apply for a visa up to 90 days before your intended visa start date. For more information on entry and exit requirements, visit the U.S. State Department  website .

St. Petersburg is built around a network of rivers and canals, with many of the city's top attractions located on the banks of the water.

62 Fun Things to Do in St. Petersburg, Russia

fun things to do in St. Petersburg, Russia

  • 0 Pinterest

Straddling the Baltic Sea, Saint Petersburg — the Venice of the North — is a city that oozes culture, overflows with heritage and history, and entertains in a way that few cities can.

From its world-class ballet and opera companies to the grand palaces that line the canal banks of many a street, St. Petersburg is one city where you can spend days, even weeks, simply taking in the unique atmosphere it has to offer.

So, to ensure that your visit is full of laughter, enjoyment and memories (and one that may or may not include too many vodka shots), check out this selection of some of the most exciting and underrated things to do in St. Petersburg, Russia!

1 – Embrace the beauty of the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood

Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood, St. Petersburg

Once a place of worship, this ornate, late 19th-century Russian Revival church now serves as a secular museum full of treasures and insights.

The exterior is undoubtedly spectacular and, once inside, visitors can gaze at the walls of colorful mosaics and religious paintings and icons.

To learn all about its history and unique moniker, let a local show you around. The church is part of several package tours available with private tour guides.

2 – Tour the grand Peter and Paul Fortress

Peter and Paul Fortress, St. Petersburg

A truly foreboding structure covering Zayachy Island, this 18th-century citadel is the city’s oldest building and, as you’ll realize from its prominence on postcards, one of its most important.

A private guided tour through this palatial fortress will gain you access to key pieces of the city’s history, including the grim Trubetskoy Bastion prison cells, and the extraordinary Peter and Paul Cathedral (highlighted by towering golden spires).

With plenty of stories to share, expect to become an expert on the building’s history from its construction in 1703 to its conversion into the museum it is today some 220 years later.

3 – Behold the vastness of the Hermitage Museum

Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg

A remarkable title to hold, the Hermitage is the world’s largest art museum, consisting of 5 interconnected buildings sprawled out over a whopping 720,000 (give or take) square feet and housing over 3 million diverse works of art.

One such building is the grandiose Winter Palace, which served as an official residence of Russian Emperors — a piece of art in its own right.

It would take years to see everything, so make sure to tick off the essentials and find the originals by masters like da Vinci, Raphael, and Rembrandt before wandering around to uncover the hidden gems.

4 – Take a hop-on-hop-off bus tour

Peterhof Palace, St. Petersburg

Sitting on the southern shores of the Gulf of Finland, about 40 minutes by car from the hustle and bustle of St Petersburg proper, this spectacular palace and garden complex is a true symbol of opulence, having been commissioned by Peter the Great as an answer to France’s iconic Palace at Versailles.

Guided tours allow you to wander the lavish gardens and see not only perfectly manicured flowers, bushes and trees, but gorgeous ornate fountains and stunning decorative elements.

Once inside, that’s when the real magic begins. Stroll the majestic baroque hallways of the palace to appreciate hundreds of paintings, sculptures and furniture pieces.

6 – Tour the city’s waters in a canal cruise

boat tours in St. Petersburg

For a chance to see the city’s key monuments in all of their architectural splendor (especially considering many were built with a view from the water in mind), there’s no shortage of St. Petersburg guided tour packages that include boat cruises through the city’s underappreciated canal system.

As you cruise along the Neva River and its five man-made canals, you’ll be blessed with the chance to marvel at the spires and domes of the St. Petersburg skyline and illuminated landmarks like the Peter and Paul Fortress. Depending on your cruise of choice, dig into a hearty multi-course meal or soak in some live music.

7 – Visit the summer residence of the Russian tsars at Catherine Palace

Catherine Palace, St. Petersburg

One for the history buffs, less than 20 short miles out of the main area of the city lies the regal former residence of Catherine the Great herself.

Here, visitors can explore the grounds and buildings and marvel at the Baroque and Neoclassical interiors, see the spectacular Amber Room, and stroll through the engulfing greenery of Catherine park — all while enjoying a history lesson from a knowledgeable tour guide.

8 – Go dog-sledding and become a musher!

dog sledding in St. Petersburg

A quintessential and, let’s be honest, slightly stereotypical Russian activity, dogsledding is simply one of those outdoor adventure thrills that need to be on the bucket list.

First, you’ll take a minibus deep into the frozen woods outside of the capital city. From there, your guide will introduce you to a team of hardworking, adorable Siberian huskies.

After learning about the history of the breed, the beautiful canines lead you on an exciting sled ride through the magnificent snow-covered forest.

As a little bonus, there’s also the opportunity to go snow-tubing and stroll along a dazzling frozen lake. A wonderful day out, the whole experience lasts about seven hours and includes a traditional Russian lunch.

9 – Take a tour of the State Russian Museum

State Russian Museum, St. Petersburg

Another enormous museum, the State Russian contains the world’s largest collection of Russian fine art. It is also one of the largest art museums in the world, covering an area of over 3 million square feet!

Spread throughout its sprawling, beautiful building you’ll see such famous pieces as Kazimir Malevich’s “The Black Square” and “The Ninth Wave” by Ivan Aivazovsky, just to name a couple.

Need to make your museum trip a little easier to swallow? Why not skip the line and book a professional tour?

10 – Relax and unwind in the Summer Garden

Summer Garden, St. Petersburg

A picture-perfect oasis to escape from the tourist crowded main squares, the illustrious Summer Garde n was created and partially designed by Peter the Great (you’ll start to see a pattern here).

While strolling around through the greenery of this beautiful example of landscape architecture, expect to come across ornate fountains, several sculptures of characters from classical mythology, and the main event, Peter the Great’s Summer Palace.

For more garden adventures there’s the nearby Mikhailovsky Garden , where you’ll spot the stately Mikhailovsky Castle, former residence of Grand Duke Michael Pavlovic.

12 – Get egg-cited at the Faberge Museum

Faberge Museum, St. Petersburg

For some, a trip to St. Petersburg wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the world’s largest collection of works by the House of Fabergé, the famous makers of Imperial Easter Eggs.

A museum tour guides you through the collection of more than 4,000 late-19th and early-20th century works, including 15 of their renowned Fabergé eggs — which served as gifts to Russian royalty and have become a centerpiece of heist movies over the years for their near-priceless values.

13 – Step inside the Yusupov Palace

Yusupov Palace, St. Petersburg

The bright yellow Yusupov Palace on the Moika River (therefore also known as Moika Palace) is one of two surviving residences of the once-influential Yusupov family.

The residence is perhaps best known for being the site of the assassination of Grigori Rasputin, a mystic healer and confidant of Tsar Nicholas II. Much of the original 18th-century interiors are completely intact. But, arguably, the real focal point is that colorful facade — as the sun goes down, it shimmers golden and stands out from its surroundings like a sore thumb.

The site is also home to the Rasputin Museum , which is included in many palace tours.

14 – Tour the town of Pushkin on a day trip

Alexander Park of Pushkin, Russia

A crowd favorite for travelers from near and far, many of the city’s most photographed tourist destinations are the town of Pushkin, just 15 short miles south of the city proper.

Visit the former royal residences of Tsarskoye Selo , stroll through the palace gardens at Catherine Park , check out the ruins of Feodorovsky Gorodok and the beauty of Feodorovsky Cathedral, and then finish off your day of exploring by relaxing in the 500 tranquil acres of Alexander Park!

To avoid deciphering the directions and booking multiple tickets, a pre-arranged small group tour that stops at each of these significant landmarks and picks you up from your hotel comes highly recommended.

  • Pushkin day trip

Leningradsky Zoopark, St. Petersburg

Open year-round, the beloved Leningradsky Zoo houses 600 species of diverse mammals, birds, fish, and invertebrates from around the globe, with truckloads of interesting interactive exhibits that encourage visitors to learn about wildlife, biological diversity and the natural world.

Resting in St. Petersburg for nearly two centuries, they once stood proudly in the Alley of Sphinxes in front of the tomb of Pharaoh Amenhotep III in Luxor — a must for any and all history buffs out there.

18 – Go for a ride on a traditional horse-drawn Russian sleigh

Two of the greenhouses are even tall enough to house subtropical palm trees.

Fun fact: The field’s name was given as a nod to Russian military leader Alexander Suvorov, who was often equated to the Roman God of War.

23 – Cruise the city’s canals in a kayak

kayaking in St. Petersburg

  • kayaking in Saint Petersburg

24 – Marvel at the Rostral Columns

Rostral Columns, St. Petersburg

Easily seen from near and far as they tower above the city’s Vasilyevsky Island some 32 meters high, proudly flanking the Old St. Petersburg Stock Exchange, are two symbolic and iconic Rostral Columns .

Erected in 1810 and ordained with rostra (the front parts of ships) and whimsical decorations of mermaids and anchors, the columns once functioned as lighthouses and today serve as a monument to the state’s great naval fleet — as well as a great selfie spot.

25 – Step back in time at the Oranienbaum Palace

Oranienbaum Palace, St. Petersburg

The majestic Oranienbaum Palace and park is the homestead of Alexander Danilovich Menshikov, a close associate of Russia’s first Emperor, Peter the Great — and, as you’ve already learned, anything that has to do with a “Great” in St Petersburg is bound to overflow with luxury and opulence.

27 – Tour the city’s beautiful Metro stations

metro station in St. Petersburg

One of the oft-overlooked things to do in St. Petersburg, a tour of the city’s expansive metro system can be just as mesmerizing as touring its many ornate palaces (and substantially cheaper).

The many meticulously designed stations are considered among the most beautiful in the world. Among them is the Avtovo station with its ornate marble pillars, Mezhdunarodnaya with its historical mosaic murals, and Obvodny Kanal with its futuristic space-age design, just to name a few.

For those looking to visit ten or so significant locations efficiently, and burn a few calories along the way, the half-day bike tour is the right option for you.

If you want to make the most out of your visit and have a more elevated experience, the five-day tour offers four nights in a hotel, private transportation, breakfast, and more, covering the inner-city, suburbs, and beyond!

31 – Admire the Naval Cathedral of St. Nicholas in Kronstadt

Naval Cathedral of Saint Nicholas in Kronstadt, St. Petersburg

If you’re after stunning pictures with unique architectural backgrounds, then the Naval Cathedral of St. Nicholas (Morskoy Sobor Svyatitelya Nikolaya Chudotvortsa) is a must! The cathedral was designed to be seen from the sea as a guide mark for sailors, so you can imagine how tall the building is (okay, we’ll tell you: 71 meters, to be exact).

Located near an array of parks and the Kronstadt History Museum, a visit to the Naval Cathedral would be a nice addition to a day of exploring the waterfront area.

32 – Get a little artsy at the Erarta

Erarta Museum, St. Petersburg, Russia

Beloved by art fanatics all over Russia, the Erarta contemporary museum features thousands of handcrafted art pieces created by over 170 artists located all across the country.

What’s unique (and admirable) about this museum is that art is chosen based on talent and not the artist’s popularity or fame!

With plenty to see, the best way to learn about what’s on show is by walking around with an English-speaking guide and hearing the rundown on the collection’s history and significance.

33 – Admire the Admiralty

Admiralty, St. Petersburg

Given that street art locations tend to be more hidden and underground, most travelers prefer to be shown around.

Although, if you’re considering going on a street art hunt of your own, be sure to focus on the city center areas, particularly between Liteiny and Logovsky avenues, and keep your eyes peeled for any hidden murals!

Raskolnikov's House in St. Petersburg, Russia

For those bookworms that have read Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment novel, the Raskolnikov’s House will no doubt be a surreal experience for you.

It has been named one of the two possible locations for the apartment of Raskolnikov, the main character in the novel. On the exterior, you will find a sculpture of Dostoevsky with an inscription worth reading when you visit.

Although the building is not open to the public, you can take a walking tour around the city and explore some hidden areas near the house, making you feel as though you’re living the novel in real life!

48 – Eat around town on a food tour

food tours in St. Petersburg

What better way to find the best food spots in the city than by booking a food tour with a local?

As we all know, most tourists naturally end up visiting the overhyped and less authentic restaurants. So take the stress out of finding the hidden gems by letting a food-obsessed and experienced local guide you through the best spots in the city!

While each tour differs, expect to dig into some pelmeni (traditional Russian dumplings), Blini (Russian pancakes), delicious crumbly Medovik cake, and, of course, a shot or two of vodka to wash it all down.

More often than not rated No.1 among all of the city’s restaurants, this traditional Russian eaterie offers a cozy atmosphere mirroring the charming old apartments found in St Petersburg.

Hot tip: Locals recommend booking in advance as the venue has a small capacity of 45 people in the “living room” (the most popular seating area).

The Mariinsky Theatre, one of Russia’s most important and renowned theaters, is a treasure of an experience in the city that you simply can’t miss. The theatre has been home to many significant Russian legends and hosts the cream-of-the-crop performers.

53 – Get creative at a Matryoshka doll painting class

doll painting classes in St. Petersburg

A must-do for culture vultures and creatives, doll painting has been an important Russian tradition since the late 1800s, and for an interesting reason: Matryoshka dolls (the famous wooden grandma-like dolls that decrease in size) have long been seen as a symbol of the Russian culture’s feminine side, traditionally associated with both family and fertility.

As a little bonus, the dolls make for excellent souvenirs to display in the dining or living room back home.

Dating back to the mid-1800s, the palace is located right beside The St. Peterburg Chamber Opera and a stone’s throw from the Neva River, making it a true gem in terms of both beauty and location.

The palace has been meticulously restored to its original glory and features many elements of the imperial Russian style, including intricate woodwork, ornate chandeliers, wooden parquet floors, gold accents on doors and windowsills as well as plush velvet seats in all public spaces.

57 – Hop around the rooftop bars, cocktail in hand

rooftop bars in St. Petersburg

For those who enjoy cocktails and beautiful views, spending a couple of tipsy hours between the many rooftop bars is another excellent evening activity before you hit the more upbeat pubs and clubs.

Ranging from casual (like the colorful resto-bar in the historic center, Gastronomika ) to upscale (like the 7th-floor HI SO Terrace of Sofitel St Petersburg), they make for a great night out with friends or even as date nights!

If you’re not sure where to start, Rterrace offers splendid views of St Isaac’s Cathedral from its comfy 6th-floor deck; while Artist’s Attic Fondue Bar, with top-notch views over the Griboyedov Canal and Bank bridges, has all the charm and coziness you’d need to celebrate a special occasion.

The Russian Vodka Museum doesn’t just offer a history lesson on the country’s favorite alcoholic beverage — it puts you right in the action so that, by the end of your visit, you’ll feel like an expert (albeit a slightly tipsy one, most likely).

The insightful tour (with vodka tastings included) lasts for about 30 minutes, and thanks to its convenient location on Konnogvardeysky Boulevard, you can easily stumble over to St. Isaac’s Cathedral when you’re done.

61 – Sweat it out at a Russian banya (sauna)

Russian banya in St. Petersburg 1

The perfect way to nurse the hangover from the pub crawl you can only half-remember from last night, a post-party Russian banya is a great option for those who like to sweat it out and feel squeaky clean afterward.

After the steamy sauna, you can plunge into an ice-cold pool before coming back inside and gently massaging your neck with birch branches.

While there’s no shortage of banyas to choose from, tourists tend to prefer Yamskie, the oldest bathing house in the city; Mitninskie, which also offers a hair and nail salon; and Bateninskie, which offers one of the more affordable rates.

62 – Spend a night in a palace

Lotte Hotel in St. Petersburg

If you’re looking for a really special experience — even if it’s just for one night — book yourself in one of the city’s grandiose palaces. Each with its own unique flair, the suites are sure to take your breath away as soon as you step inside.

The 5-star, 19th-century State Hermitage Museum Official Hotel , is set in a historic mansion just around the corner from the picturesque Fontanka River.

The opulent Lotte Hotel , located in the middle of Palace Square, offers breathtaking views of St. Isaac’s Square and Mariinski Palace, and even houses its very own Balinese Spa.

Just 300 meters from the bustling Dvortsovaya Square you’ll find the 5-star Four Seasons Hotel Lion Palace , a 19th-century royal palace that boasts Alexander Garden as its backyard.

And, last but not least, the Taleon Imperial , found in the famous Eliseev Mansion, comes with all the amenities you could ask for and more, including a 50-foot pool, Finnish and infrared saunas, and beauty treatments.

Where are the best hotels in St. Petersburg?

Even if palaces aren’t in the budget, when looking for a place to stay in St Petersburg, there’s still plenty of options depending on your taste and priorities.

For a luxury vibe, Kempinski and Astoria hotels are notorious for grand and memorable experiences.

If you’d like a budget-friendly option, the Margarita Hotel , as well as the Neptun Hotel are excellent choices. Both are located near stacks of tourist attractions and make for perfect starting points for those budget-conscious travelers!

For a prime location, the Grand Hotel Europe is a great choice just a short walk away from the metro. The atmosphere is classic, and the food is known to be delicious.

When you’re looking for something cheap (or FREE!) to do, several free walking tours around town dive into the history, culture, past, and present of St Petersburg. The tours are run by passionate locals who know the ins and outs of their city and love to share it with others.

It’s a great option for those who want their own personal tour guide but aren’t looking to spend any money. Just note, it’s usually customary to leave a small tip.

Save hassle: Book an airport transfer

You can book your transfers before or after booking your flights — either way, doing so will save a lot of hassle when you arrive or depart! Plus, hearing a few local secrets from the friendly driver and seeing the city through the window of a luxurious SUV or private car and a great way to kickstart any Russian adventure.

We hope you’ve enjoyed our selection of fun and exciting things to do in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

Is moscow or st petersburg more beautiful.

Moscow and St Petersburg are two completely different cities and difficult to compare. Both are beautiful in their own way. Moscow’s sprawling cityscape reflects centuries of history in a mixture of architectural styles - gilded cupolas of medieval Russian churches merge with Stalinist monoliths and towering glass skyscrapers, and cobble-stone alleys balance grand boulevards. St Petersburg’s centre was laid out over a matter of decades, its regular and harmonious city plan lined with Neoclassicist, Art Nouveau and Baroque masterpieces, intersected with meandering canals. If you can’t choose between the two, check out our best combined Moscow and St Petersburg tours.

What is the best time to visit Moscow and St Petersburg?

A trip to St Petersburg or Moscow at any time of year will be enjoyable. Museums and galleries are much less busy during winter, accommodation is significantly cheaper, and you can enjoy outside activities such as skiing or sleigh rides. Exploring the cities is more enjoyable in the warmer months, and St Petersburg especially beckons during the White Nights. Whenever you decide to travel, check out which national holidays are on – Pancake Week, Victory Day, and City Day are just some of the festivities you can experience. Thailand’s Tourist Towns Deal With Their Own Russian Invasion

Rich Russians Isolated From the West Are Flocking to Thailand's Phuket

I t’s just past 11 p.m. on Phuket’s neon-festooned Bangla Road and revelers are out in force, though the heady atmosphere is distinctly more Sochi than Southeast Asia. TVs overhanging the sprawling beer bars show ice skating instead of soccer; Cyrillic signage proliferates; and Russian-speaking touts dispense flyers for pole-dancing clubs exclusively featuring women from former Soviet republics. “Russians, Ukrainian, Belorussian, Kazakhs,” says one tout in dark Ray Bans and a skin-tight Armani polo shirt. “We have them all here.”

The war in Ukraine has entailed an incalculable human toll, while roiling markets, disrupting supply chains, and sending inflation soaring across the globe. But in Thailand, the two-year-old conflict is also having a profound social effect despite being over 4,000 miles away. While many Western nations have shut out Russian air travel in response to Vladimir Putin’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Thailand sees Russian arrivals as key to reviving its pandemic-ravaged tourism industry. In October, Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin extended 90-day visas upon arrival for Russian passports, insisting in a February interview : “We’re not part of the [Ukraine] conflict. We are neutral.”

Read More: 5 Takeaways from TIME’s Conversation with Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin

Last year, Russians ranked top for tourist arrivals in Thailand from outside of Asia with 1.4 million visitors. Meanwhile, Russians were top overall on the southern resort island of Phuket, which has long been a favorite haunt. Last July, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov visited Phuket to inaugurate a new consulate to cope with surging visitor numbers. A month later, the Phuket Tourist Association sent a delegation to St. Petersburg and Moscow seeking to court even more vacationers.

In the first three months of this year, 366,095 Russians arrived at Phuket International Airport, almost double the same period of 2023 and transforming the island’s commercial and social life. (That figure doesn’t include the significant number who transferred via Thailand’s main gateway of Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Bangkok.) But while a boon for the macro economy, the influx has chafed with locals who increasingly complain that Russians are stealing jobs and upsetting cultural mores. Across Thailand, lurid headlines such as “ Rabid Russian assaults police team in Phuket after going berserk at a city centre hotel ” and “ Russian tourist kicks pregnant Thai woman after asked to leave shoes outdoor ” are both a symptom and cause of alarm. (However, transgressions involving New Zealand , Swiss , and Portuguese nationals admittedly proliferate also.)

“Russia and Thailand are so different and sometimes they don’t understand Thai law and culture,” Lieut. Colonel Akachai Siri, chief inspector of Phuket Tourist Police, tells TIME. “Sometimes they break the law and they don’t recognize we have law enforcement.”

Nevertheless, Thailand’s Russian incursion appears here to stay. Other than the preferential visas, sanctions on Russian air carriers and reciprocal bans on Western airlines have slashed the destinations where Russian nationals can escape their frigid winter, making already-popular Thailand an easier choice. And then there are the not inconsiderable numbers fleeing economic doldrums and a war of choice that they had no part in choosing—not least since the Kremlin has ramped up military conscription amid mounting casualties .

“That was the final straw for us,” says Mark, a Russian who fled to Thailand with his boyfriend after an initial draft announcement in September 2022 and asked that TIME use a pseudonym for security. “We understood we can’t go back because anyone can be called to the army and just die in the war.”

As a result, the number of Russians choosing to stay in Thailand long-term is soaring. Beyond 90-day visas upon arrival, thousands are applying for one-year business or education visas. Arnold, who asked that TIME use only one name for fear of reprisals in his homeland, moved from Moscow to the Thai resort town of Hua Hin permanently last year and has noticed an increase in what are colloquially termed “ relocants ” fleeing the “various negative things which are going on back home.”

The affluent are acquiring luxury cars and yachts and renting or purchasing villas. Phuket’s plush Laguna beachfront complex of villas, ornamental lake, and 18-hole golf course is now dubbed “Little Moscow,” says Bhummikitti Ruktaengam, advisory chairman to Phuket’s Tourist Association. Over half of all residents across its 1,000 acres are Russian, according to the Laguna real estate management office, which employs two native Russian speakers to deal with the shifting demographic. Across Phuket, real estate prices have bumped some 20% owing to the Russian influx, says Bhummikitti.

The incursion has also increased pressure on Akachai’s Tourist Police, which has only 60 officers to assist the 2,000-odd regular Royal Thai Police and 60 dedicated Immigration Police across both Phuket and the larger adjacent province of Pha Nga. In addition to swelling tourist numbers, whereas 60% of tourists before the pandemic traveled on tour groups with guides and agents on hand to smooth any problems, today, 70% are independent travelers, which means the Tourist Police are increasingly called to mediate all manner of conflicts.

Relaxed entry requirements have also attracted a criminal element. In early February, Phuket police arrested five suspected Russian gangsters for the kidnapping and extortion of over $800,000 in cryptocurrency from a Belarussian couple that Akachai says was retaliation for a financial dispute back home. And last month, a 42-year-old Russian man was found stabbed to death in a rented house that was being used as a cannabis farm. The chief suspect is a Tajikistani man who fled Thailand for Turkey just hours after the murder.

Yet Akachai says most crimes relate to illegal work involving Russians determined not to return home while the war rages but without the means to support themselves indefinitely—not least since international banking sanctions have rendered accessing savings more difficult. Many Russians have set themselves up as unofficial tour guides, car and motorbike rental services, real estate agents, hairdressers, or even sex workers, advertising online via Telegram groups.

Yet not all aspects of the phenomenon are troublesome. Other than Russians, a significant number of Ukrainians have fled their war torn nation for Thailand, potentially creating a tinderbox atmosphere. But Akachai says he has not encountered a single skirmish or negative incident between the two nationalities in Phuket. Yury Rozhkov, 46, a Russian national who works for a travel agency in Bangkok, says he regularly meets Ukrainians staying in his apartment building and relations are nothing but cordial.

“They understand it’s Putin, it’s not Russia, Russian people are different,” he says. “And I’m sure Russians who have money to travel to Thailand do not support Putin and the war in Ukraine.”

In Hua Hin, Arnold is a member of a Russian-language Telegram group with more than 4,500 members from across the former Soviet bloc, but he says he cannot recall a single politically charged message among the 400 or so posted every day. “99.9% of discussions are where to find the best pad thai, current prices in the local market, how to rent a car, or where to get a vaccine,” he says.

Perched by the main gate of Phuket’s Laguna resort, the d’Odessa restaurant serves Ukrainian syrniki pancakes and smoked salmon croissants slathered with gold leaf. The tablet menu has options for Ukrainian, English, and Russian—and staff say the majority of clientele speak the latter. “There are many Ukrainian restaurants filled with Russians in Phuket,” says Bhummikitti.

Ultimately, both sides caught up in this senseless conflict share a desire to stay out of harm’s way by whatever means necessary. Mark is still employed by his Russian IT company thanks to an understanding boss despite remote working being strictly against company policy. Every day he fears a draft ticket or internal enquiries by higher management could spell the end to that vital paycheck. If that happens, “I will try to find a local job or another [remote] job in Russia,” he says. “I will try every way I can not to go back.”
