Main Characteristics

Form

Refined, advanced design

Starting from the handsome yet simple design of the previous model, the J-Cruise II offers an even more modern, refined shell style. We took a hard look at the details such as the operating mechanism of the sun visor and other parts, to create a more compact shell than the previous model. We also redesigned the back of the helmet for better aerodynamic performance with a unique shape, transforming this helmet into an aero-device where the shell shape serves as a spoiler.

Ventilation system

shoei j cruise ii solid helmet

Cool wearability proven by wind tunnel test results

The heat that a rider experiences has a direct effect on how exhausted they feel. The helmet's ability keep things cool inside of the helmet through proper ventilation is a crucial factor that riders require from any helmet. The J-Cruise II has undergone repeated tests at SHOEI's own large-scale wind tunnel test facility, in the relentless pursuit of improving ventilation performance. Another intake hole has been added to the upper air intake for 30% more inflow of air into the helmet vs. the previous model. We also studied many different shapes for the top air outlet, to provide the best shape for optimum air outflow efficiency. As a result, we increased the outflow air volume by 20% or more, while maintaining the same number of air outlet holes as the previous model.

(Reference value comparison measured using our in-house wind tunnel testing facilities)

shoei j cruise ii solid helmet

We exposed the J-Cruise and J-Cruise II to wind velocities equivalent to 100 km/h, and measured their respective air intake volumes. The inflow on the J-Cruise II was around 1.3 times greater than that of our previous model. *Reference value comparison measured using our in-house wind tunnel testing facilities

shoei j cruise ii solid helmet

For the shape of the center part inside the top air outlet, we tested many different patterns at our large-scale wind tunnel facility, to find the best shape with the most effective ventilation. (patent pending)

Shield/Visor System

Maintains a clear field of view at all times, so you can enjoy the scenery.

The J-Cruise II uses the CJ-2 shield/visor, with a minimum of distortion and a clear field of view. The rib on the bottom edge of the shield/visor has been designed for greater rigidity, and wind turbulence within the helmet has been kept to a bare minimum. The window beading was changed from the previous double-lipped shape to airtight-sealed window beading, which offers both excellent sealing performance and durability. This design offers a helmet with superior airtight performance.

shoei j cruise ii solid helmet

A shield/visor lock is used on the bottom left edge of the shield/visor to prevent accidental opening. The locking mechanism is simple and accurate, allowing the shield/visor to lock when closed fully, and for the shield/visor to be opened just by pushing outwards on the inside of the bottom left edge of the shield/visor.

shoei j cruise ii solid helmet

The J-Cruise II now offers a new slightly open position setting for the shield/visor base. Use the slightly open position to quickly defog and efficiently ventilate the inside of the helmet, if the shield/visor fogs up while you are riding. The slightly open position was designed so that the shield/visor can be kept open, at a position where the lower edge of the shield/visor or the silicone seal of the PINLOCK® EVO lens does not interfere with your field of vision.

shoei j cruise ii solid helmet

The J-Cruise II comes standard-equipped with a PINLOCK® EVO lens that protects against shield/visor fogging. This lens ensures a clear field of vision, even when riding in high humidity or cold weather. *Image shown is for purpose of illustration.

QSV-2 Sun Visor

New sun visor further reduces sunlight entering the helmet.

Although the shields/visors on open-faced helmets that cover the rider's entire face allow light to enter over a wider area, care needs to be taken to reduce glare. The J-Cruise II uses a QSV-2 sun visor that is 5 mm longer than the previous model, to reduce the amount of sunlight that comes in through the lower part of the shield/visor. With a longer sun visor, the distance from the wearer's nose when using the sun visor is closer than on the QSV-1, so the shape of the nose part has been cut deeper than the QSV-1 to avoid contact.

shoei j cruise ii solid helmet

A high-precision sun visor, rivaling the EN-1836 standard set by European sunglasses.

shoei j cruise ii solid helmet

The levers on both sides of the eye port can be pulled out to stabilize the sun visor base, so that you can attach and remove the sun visor more smoothly. *Be sure that the lever is in the downward position and that the mechanism is unlocked when you are not attaching or removing the sun visor.

A highly comfortable design when taken off, put on or worn

The fabric used on the interior surface is a hybrid between moisture-absorbent, quick-drying material and soft raised fabric. Moisture-absorbent and quick-drying material is used on areas that cover the cheeks and brow where sweat tends to stick; and soft raised fabric is used on the parts where the skin tends to rub against when the rider wears/removes the helmet. This offers greater snugness and optimum comfort when wearing the helmet. The bottom edge of the cheek pad uses leather-like material that is more durable than the previous model, with an added design pattern with attention to detail.

Micro-ratchet-type chinstrap

Micro-ratchet-type chinstrap

SHOEI's unique chinstrap design: safe and easy to use

The J-Cruise II features a micro-ratchet-type chinstrap, which the rider can adjust even while wearing thick gloves. The chinstrap features SHOEI's unique design, made for both convenience and safety, with the latches always hooking on in two places when locked. The lock opens if the buckle lever is lifted past a certain point.

Attachment mechanism for exclusively-designed communication system

Easy to wear with excellent design.

Highly convenient communication systems are becoming a must-have feature for many riders. The J-Cruise II features an attachment mechanism for the SRL or SRL2 communication system, designed exclusively by SENA. Having an exclusive design allows the communication system to blend in well with the helmet when attached, and the system is easy to attach.

shoei j cruise ii solid helmet

The SRL and SRL2 communication systems designed exclusively for our helmets are made by SENA. These systems are not included with the helmet. SENA sells the SRL/SRL2, and all related service and support is provided by SENA.

Shoei J-Cruise II review: the 3/4 that thinks it’s a full face helmet.

Shoei-J-Cruise-II-featured

Page Contents

Shoei J-Cruise II review expensive but quality open face helmet.

Shoei’s J-Cruise helmet has been around for a few years now and has built a reputation as being a high quality open face 3/4 helmet, but kind of like an open face that thinks it’s a full face.

shoei-j-cruise-II-gloss-white-front-view

That’s because Shoei designed it to offer pretty well all the functionality of a full face helmet , just without the chin bar.

The original J-Cruise was very well received with hardly any areas of weakness reported. So now it’s on with that difficult follow up: to try and replace the J-Cruise with a helmet that’s even better than the original.

So, Shoei’s taken that first helmet and tried to make the J-Cruise II that bit better in what seems to be more or less every area. They say it’s slightly lighter, better venting, has improved aero, a better sealing main shield and a slightly deeper sun visor.

But then they all say something along those lines whenever a helmet’s launched. So, here’s what the Shoei J-Cruise II is actually like – taken from the comments and opinions of riders around the web who actually own one.

  • Fiberglass composite AIM Shell
  • Four shell sizes (that’s lots)
  • Drop down sun visor
  • Integrated bluetooth : SRL/SRL2
  • Pinlock ready shield ( Pinlock not included)
  • Micrometric fastener
  • Sizes XS-XXL
  • Expect to pay $550-$600

shoei j cruise ii solid helmet

Overall/Summary

If you look at our overall star rating of the Shoei J-Cruise II at the bottom of the page, you’ll find it hasn’t scored amazingly high. That’s probably because one of the factors we rate helmets on is value for money – and by anyone’s measure, the J-Cruise II isn’t the best value around.

And because it’s an open face helmet , it’s going to drop points on the safety rating too.

shoei-j-cruise-II-aglero-helmet-black-yellow-side-view

Having said that, with it’s AIM shell that usually scores well in SHARP safety tests and a good rating for noise attenuation (for an open face helmet at any rate) it’s still one of the highest scores we’ve given a helmet without a chin bar. Which is saying something.

That’s because, if money’s no object and you want a 3/4 helmet, then the Shoei J-Cruise II is a fabulous helmet. It’s superbly constructed. It uses Shoei’s tried and tested shell tech. And that double visor system’s excellent – although it really should come with a Pinlock antifog included at this price.

And owner after owner that we came across loves their J-Cruise II.

Overall then, if you’re looking for a high quality open face helmet that acts as if it were a full face in terms of comfort, aero and features, then you needn’t look any further than the Shoei J-Cruise. It’s really very good.

(more about helmet safety)

As usual when looking at safety with an open face helmet, we’ve gotta start off by saying something along the lines of ‘it won’t be that protective… there’s no chin bar so if you come off, things could get messy.’

There, think that about covers it. It’s an open face helmet  so don’t expect it to stop your chin/face/nose taking a battering if you have an off.

If you really need the freedom of an open face helmet but want something that’ll protect you as well, then how about checking out one of these modular helmets from our top 10 flip-front helmets list instead?

Nope? OK, open face it is then.

In that case, the J-Cruise looks to be about as protective as you’re gonna get from an open face helmet. Not only do the sides come down nice and low to give you some protection lower down around your chin, but Shoei’s AIM shell uses the same helmet tech that’s used in some of their full face helmets.

shoei-j-cruise-II-aglero-black-white-rear-view

It’s not their most technologically advanced shell construction – that’s their AIM+ shells. But it is a solid helmet shell material/construction, evidenced by other AIM helmets (admittedly the ECE version of the helmet, not the DOT) scoring pretty well when SHARP tests them (strangely Snell has never certified an AIM Shoei – just their AIM+ helmets).

For example, the ECE Neotech II has an AIM shell and that scored 4 stars out of 5 when tested by SHARP. So, given that every AIM shelled Shoei scored a four star rating (apart from the original GT Air which scored three) we’d have to say that, were SHARP to test the shell of the J-Cruise II (which they won’t because they only test helmets with chin bars so far) then I guess it probably would score 4 stars. Which is a good rating.

Of course, it’s not just the shell that’s at work here. It’s also that shock absorbing liner underneath.

And in the case of the J-Cruise II, it’s multi denisity liner as found on most of their range nowadays. So that should do the job nicely.

It’s also great to see that it’s manufactured in four different shell sizes . That’s just what you want to see with a premium priced helmet like the J-Cruise 2 and means the helmet you buy should be well optimized for fit, size and safety. So that means there’s one shell size each covering fitment sizes XS-S, M, L and XL-XXL.

shoei-j-cruise-II-Adagio-black-red-motorbike-helmet-side-view

Other than the helmet shell, you get optically correct face shield and sun visor, there to reduce distortion and the sun visor to prevent dazzling on sunny days.

And the main shield’s Pinlock-ready (Pinlock not included unfortunately) so fitting a Pinlock should pretty well prevent fogging (see shield section below).

The J-Cruise II also uses a metal micrometric fastener ; which are particularly easy to use – just always ensure the strap adjustor’s tightened up from time to time so your helmet doesn’t have the chance to come loose.

All in all then, the J-Cruise II does a good job of making a protective helmet; just not anywhere near as protective as a full face or the safest modulars.

Helmet Noise

(more about helmet noise).

OK, so the J-Cruise II is an open face that thinks it’s a full face. But open face helmets are always noisy helmets right, what with all that large area to let wind rattle around and noise creep in?

Thing is, that doesn’t seem to be the case with the J-Cruise II.

It’s fair to say that Shoei has made quite a bit of effort with the aero of the J-Cruise II, wind tunnel sculpting it to reduce drag and hence noise. They’ve also pushed some ear pads inside and made the shield fit tighter, slightly re-shaping it to divert the air. All of which should reduce noise when you’re riding.

I also suspect many J-Cruise owners’ expectations are pretty low in terms of noise suppression. I mean, you buy an open face helmet so you’re expecting it to be a bit windy and noisy, right?

shoei-j-cruise-II-Adagio-black-white-motorbike-helmet-front-view

But having said that, noise perception is always going to be just that… perception. It’s what you think that matters. And in the case of the J-Cruise II the vast majority of owners we found say they’re more than happy with the noise levels on the move, and that it’s super quiet for an open face helmet.

Of course, you need to ensure you get the fitment right in the first place. With the J-Cruise II that means you need to have a medium oval shaped head – and if you’re between sizes, make sure you buy the size up as we’ve heard from owners who found their helmets to be too tight when they were on the cusp.

But provided you get the size that fits and you’ve the right shaped head, then it seems like the J-Cruise II is one of the quietest open face helmets out there.

In comparison to the quietest helmets overall (including full face helmets), it probably ranks around average. But that’s very quiet for an open face and a great performance by Shoei’s engineers.

Ventilation

(more about helmet ventilation).

Ventilation is one of the key areas Shoei has worked on with the J-Cruise II. You’d have thought that because it’s an open face helmet, you’d get pretty much all the ventilation you need without really trying.

Shoei_J-Cruise_Airflow

Couple that with the fact that the old J-Cruise helmet was highly rated for ventilation anyhow, even with just that single vent up top.

But Shoei hasn’t rested on their laurels. They’ve reworked the helmet shell to make it more compact and with better aero properties and have stuck 3 big vents on the top just to make sure a ton of air gets through.

Shoei reckons everything’s somewhere around 20-30% improved from the old helmet in terms of ventilation. Which is nice.

What’s not quite so great apparently, is that the corresponding rear air vent is actually just a couple of small holes, thereby apparently restricting the air flow a little overall, according to one owner.

Still, most owners agree that the head venting on the J-Cruise II is great and lets plenty of air in and over your head just when you want it. And if things get colder, those three vents are all 3-way adjustable with a half-open and closed position too, all operated with big glove-friendly sliders.

(more about face shields)

The main shield on the J-Cruise 2 is massive, giving you a great view of the road ahead, your clocks and pretty well all around you, even when the shield’s down.

It’s an optically correct shield too, which is useful with the shield being so large. And it’s quick change too, so you can pull it off quickly simply by opening the shield then pushing a lever either side and pulling it free.

Just like the old J-Cruise helmet, it uses a super low tech peg and hole lock to keep the shield closed. Even though it’s a system that’s as old as the hills (and probably older!), it seems like it works just fine because we didn’t find anyone complaining about it online. Job done.

A couple of useful links…

– All our Shoei helmets reviews –

– Open face helmet reviews –

Surprisingly for an open face helmet, lots of owners reckoned they can have a problem with fogging. I guess that’s what happens when you make such a large and well sealed shield on a helmet – even if it’s an open face.

That shouldn’t be a particular problem on the J-Cruise II as Shoei has made the shield Pinlock ready. Bizarrely, they haven’t included a Pinlock insert free in the box (like AGV has with their $200 AGV K3 for example – ahem) which is taking the piss a little on such an expensive lid.

Shoei_J-Cruise II_Intercom

Still, at least there is the option for a Pinlock available I guess.

Making a Pinlock Evo available for the J-Cruise II is arguably tacit admittance that it is prone to some fogging. So too is the addition of a cracked-open city riding position for the shield – usually there to let more air in and help with defogging.

Then again, stick any piece of cold polycarbonate in front of your face on a cold or humid day and it’s probably going to fog up, so it’s good to know Shoei’s taken steps to address it.

What also good to know is that Shoei says their polycarb shield cuts out 99% of UV rays. Polycarbonate’s known for cutting out at least 95% anyway, but it’s always good to see an exact figure.

(more about sun visors)

The same figure’s quoted for the sun visor too – another 99% protection against UV. And Shoei’s apparently got that US ANSI Z80.3-2010 standard which means it should give about as much protection as a pair of shades – and includes a test to ensure it won’t burst into flames. Which is always good to know!

shoei-j-cruise-II-matt-blue-open-face-helmet-front-view

Shoei have made the sun visor a bit longer than the old J-Cruise too. That’s often welcome as there’s always a few folks saying their sun visor doesn’t drop down low enough (just like we found with the J-Cruise I).

And while the placing of the sun visor’s slider is slightly unusual (necessitated by the location of the panel for the integrated bluetooth controller) the action’s nice and smooth and, once you get used to where to find it, it works well.

Comfort and Sizing

(more about comfort and sizing).

The J-Cruise 2 is available in sizes XS-XXL and comes in four shell sizes.

It uses Shoei’s 3D Max-Dry liner. The 3D refers to the 3D laser cut foam that goes inside, and Max-Dry is Shoei’s regular interior designed to absorb and wick sweat away twice as fast as nylon does (which doesn’t seem much of a bold claim since nylon’s basically plastic!).

Still, Max Dry liners are highly regarded and Shoei does make a nice and comfortable liner.

shoei-J-Cruise-II-helmet-matt-deep-grey-side-view

Like other premium helmet makers, you can also buy different thicknesses of cheekpads to help tailor the fit if you find it’s not quite right or loosens off over time.

And if you wear glasses, there’s also a glasses groove in there so the arms of your glasses won’t press into your head.

Overall, owners reckon that the J-Cruise II is a very comfortable helmet . In fact we didn’t find a single owner saying otherwise.

Obviously, you have to get the sizing right in the first place (check out our fitting guide ) and the word is if you find you’re between sizes with the J-Cruise II, you’re best opting for a size up as a size down will be too tight.

Other than that, the quality and overall feel of the comfort liner is spot on.

Best places to buy a Shoei J-Cruise II?

Other stuff – bluetooth, weight, glasses, aero & buffeting, build quality, warranty

If you’re looking to fit a bluetooth headset to your J-Cruise II, it’s designed to work with the SCL 1 or 2 set that’s been developed by Sena and Shoei to integrate with their helmets .

That means there’s a place to stick the controller on the left hand side (there’s a small panel on the bottom edge to remove) and the battery pack slots into a panel at the bottom rear. There’s also plenty of space for speakers and a boom microphone.

shoei-J-Cruise-II-helmet-top-view

Shoei managed to reduce the weight of the J-Cruise II over the old helmet by around 100g. It’s not a lot, but it means the J-Cruise II weighs around 3.1lbs (1.4kg), down from the 3.3lbs of the old helmet.

It’s far from being the lightest open face helmet out there but it’s OK – and a few owners reckon the weight adds to its sense of quality too.

If you’re a glasses wearer, then the Shoei J-Cruise II is great for glasses . There’re glasses grooves inside and a several owners said there’s plenty of space to drop down the sun visor and main shield without interfering with your glasses. And because they’re both optically correct, there isn’t much noticeable distortion even though you’re effectively peering through three panes of plastic.

Shoei reckoned they’ve done a good deal of work on the aero of the helmet to reduce lift, drag and buffeting. That might be measurable in the wind tunnel but I’m not sure owners find much difference. Having said that, we didn’t come across any complaints either so it looks like the aero works just fine.

The build quality’s rated as excellent too. Lots of owners say just how fantastic quality the helmet is – the finish, the internals – you name it, they like it. Which is one of the reasons you go for a premium helmet like a Shoei: they take the time to get things right.

And it means they can happily offer a 5 year warranty on the manufacture of all their helmets.

First up, and in a similar vein to the J-Cruise II – and even more practical – is the Nolan N40-5 GT. It’s a supremely versatile modular helmet that can be converted into a jet by fully removing the chin bar. The best of both worlds!

sena savage helmet with short peak

Or what about the Sena Savage ? It’s a fiberglass open face helmet that comes with a bluetooth communicator pre-installed. OK it’s a reasonably basic bluetooth, but most owners find it’s fine. And it’s a decent wodge cheaper than the J-Cruise II. Mind you, you’d have to make do with a snap on visor.

shoei j cruise ii solid helmet

The fiberglass Shoei Jo has one built in tho. It also uses the same AIM shell as the J-Cruise II though the Jo’s much lighter and cheaper. It’s more back to basics too.

shoei j cruise ii solid helmet

Finally, what about the Bell Broozer . It really looks the part and it has a fully removable but protective chin bar for when you want to get a lick on. It comes with both a clear and dark visor, weighs about the same as the J-Cruise II but comes in around half the price.

CORRECT HELMET SIZING

Each helmet model has small differences in its shape that ultimately affect the fit. For this reason, it is essential to test a helmet before buying it. Test whether it sits on your head properly by putting on the helmet and moving your head to the left and right, as well as up and down while holding the helmet firmly with both hands. If your head can move too freely within the helmet, we recommend that you try a smaller size. If you feel local pressure points, then choose a helmet that is one size larger, or perhaps try on a different model.

Wrap a cloth measuring tape around your head just above your eyebrows and ears. Pull the tape comfortably snug, read the length, repeat for good measure and use the largest measurement.

Shoei J Cruise II Review

by Alex Meyer

Helmet Labs may collect a share of sales or other compensation from the links on this page. This comes at no additional cost to you, and all the prices and availability are accurate at the time of publishing.

An overdue update to Shoei’s 2013 J-Cruise, the J-Cruise II marries all that we loved from the original with seven years worth of tech innovation.

As with the original Cruise model, the missing chin bar puts this jet-style 3/4 helmet in a sort of functional “no-man’s land” — it has a full face feel without the added protection. It may even seem impractical to some riders, imperfect as both an open face and a full face helmet.

Once you start to break down the quality Shoei put into this helmet, you start to understand that it is not just for scooter riders. Sure, the jet helmet is not built for sports bikes, but daily urban riders can find exceptional value in its premium comfort and unique fashion.

Shape and materials

The J-Cruise II fits most riders with its intermediate oval shape, slightly longer back to front and narrower down the sides. Available in four outer shell sizes (XS-SM, MD, LG, XL-2XL), the helmet fits well, but its deeper cavity may require a size up.

A carryover from the original J-Cruise, the Advanced Integrated Matrix (AIM) design of the shell features high-quality composites blended with organic and glass fibers, giving it strength and flexibility.

The shell design also helps with the reduced weight, which comes in at just over 3.8 lbs in a large. This is about ¼ lb heavier than the original model, a minor deviation that is offset by a balanced, stress-reducing shell.

A notable change in the newer model is the sportier, aerodynamic design, a natural result of design and compatibility enhancements. Extra vent intakes add function to a slick look while the rear spoiler reportedly reduces lift and drag. This spoiler, in truth, is also one of three key additions to a comm integration for Shoei’s proprietary Sena SRL2 Bluetooth system.

The J-Cruise II is available in five colors — black, matte black, white, matte blue metallic and anthracite metallic.

Things I liked

  • Lightweight yet durable AIM outer shell.
  • Superior removable and replaceable interior comfort features.
  • Enhanced air intakes.
  • Longer face shield and aerodynamic features deflect air and reduce noise.

Things I don’t like

  • Poor compatibility with some comm systems.
  • Impractical for some riders.

Overall comfort

The interior components are about as comfy as can be, all removable to wash and swap out to customize your fit. Cheek pads are well-designed and supportive, with easy-on/easy-off studs to detach and swap out if you need a better fit or an audio attachment.

In general, the helmet can offer a snug yet unrestricting fit for just about any rider.

The center headlining is constructed of lightweight, antibacterial and moisture-wicking 3D MaxDry material in an open weave to promote airflow and added cooling. Meanwhile, the conforming cheek pads and neckroll use soft fleece for warmth and plush comfort. These are covered on the exterior with a sealed vinyl material, making it feel sturdier and keeping water from being absorbed into the helmet if you get caught in the rain.

The chin strap moves from a double-D ring fastener to a ratchet strap, which some find easier for removal, especially with gloves. This strap is outfitted with a removable, washable fleece cover that adds a nice layer of comfort.

Audio takes a new course with the J-Cruise II, with the overall design being built specifically for Sena’s SRL2 BT comm system, similar to the Neotec 2 and GT Air 2. The back spoiler can house the battery, while removable plastic cheek sections on the exterior can be swapped out to fit common pieces. This creates a seamless look, free of awkward, exposed audio components.

The Sena setup is definitely a premium, versatile system to match a premium helmet. However, you may already have a system you like and want to carry it over to the J-Cruise II. If that’s the case, you may have some trouble installing it on the new helmet.

Adding in another system may require adjustments on where you place the unit on the side, though a sticky mount will likely solve the problem in any case. Thankfully, there are no worries on the speaker placement for the SRL2 or any other aftermarket set. Cutouts hidden behind soft interior padding allow for speakers and wires to be tucked out of sight.

The visor improves what was already fairly solid visibility from the first series.

A slightly longer shield provides additional wind protection, which is further enhanced by the smart edge design. Its weightier bottom edge offers not only better durability but also helps reduce buffeting at speed. This pairs with an improved airtight seal design to prevent moisture and wind from entering where it does not belong.

With many visors, face shield lifting from wind gusts at higher speeds is a potential concern. Shoei did a great job with the detente stops in the J-Cruise II, giving it three secure positions that are both tight-to-lock and easy-to-adjust.

The three positions are full up, full down or the new “slightly up” state. The latter position, also called first position, is especially helpful for defogging the visor and ventilating. The tight hold allows you to cruise at low speeds perfectly fine in the unlocked first position without worrying about rattling or a flapping shield.

In terms of switching visor positions, a simple positive push release makes it easy to toggle between fully closed and first position.

Swapping out shields is easy with Shoei’s Quick Release Self Adjusting mechanism. Levers on either side release the visor, allowing you to quickly change into different clear and tinted options.

It is worth noting that Shoei does not include Pinlocks with the CJ-2 face shield that comes with the J-Cruise II. If you are upgrading from the original model, the same insert will work. But with the antifogging functions in the new locking positions, you may not even need this addition. If you ride in colder climates, however, the insert is nice for demisting with a locked down shield.

Finally, the J-Cruise II still features the drop-down sun visor, albeit with a few design changes. With 5mm added to the length, slight adjustment to the nose cut-out and smaller cavity, the J-Cruise II is a bump in comfort, function and noise-reduction. The visor can also easily be swapped out so you can choose between smoke and yellow options.

For a ¾ helmet, the J-Cruise II is an impressively quiet option. Much of this is due to the face shield design and the comfortable fit of the interior padding.

The one major limitation on noise-reduction is the open chin that lets air inside. Fortunately, the wide curve of the longer face shield helps divert airflow, while the new upper seal further keeps air out.

Of course, with an open or slightly open shield, you are going to let in more air and subsequently more noise. Interestingly, the noise is fairly tolerable in that slightly open position, especially since you will likely be using that for urban riding when you need to keep it fog-free.

Ventilation

There are some new ventilation additions and enhancements that may seem redundant on an open face helmet. But with the J-Cruise II shield boasting such a quality outer seal both top and bottom, you will be thankful for the added airflow on hot days.

Three top intake vents pair with a rear passive vent to provide strong air flow when it gets hot and stuffy.

The two side vents are one of two ventilation upgrades from the original J-Cruise, adding 30 percent to the helmet’s intake, according to the manufacturer. The rear exhaust also enjoyed a 20 percent increase in airflow to keep up.

With three different open positions — open, half-open, closed — the intake vents provide versatility for controlling the climate on hot or cold days. Being able to independently adjust each vent also helps manage noise levels.

The second enhancement, the four slightly deeper EPS channels, is a little more subtle but an improvement nonetheless. Paired with the extra top intakes, the airflow on the interior goes a long way toward keeping cool with a closed face shield.

For all its design adjustments, a chinless open face just does not seem as fully protective as a full face helmet. That being said, from a relative standpoint, those design features that contributed to comfort and noise reduction also help the rider stay safer than most ¾ models.

The J-Cruise II is DOT and ECE certified, but it has not undergone the Snell or Sharp ratings. From where we stand though, Shoei always prioritized safety. For an open face design, this gets about as close to full face protection as you can get.

The J-Cruise II is a pricier model, and its position between a full face and open face design may be off-putting if you have your preference. But if you value comfort, temperature control and Shoei’s reputation for quality, this is a great choice for everyday riding.

The New SHOEI J-Cruise

The freedom of choice expands well beyond a simple act of cong...

The J-Cruise II, SHOEI’s premium open-face helmet, features their latest technical advances to revolutionize the entire product design. The simplicity and freedom of the original open-face design has taken a leap forward with the addition of an inner sun visor. Further functionality and comfort is offered with a compact lightweight design and improved ventilation performance, in addition to SHOEI’s uncompromised safety. The evolution of the J-Cruise II will enhance your riding experience.

Refined and Advanced Design

With the J-Cruise II, SHOEI has updated the design with a modern and progressive look that is also more compact than the previous model. Details such as the sun visor operating mechanism, inner sun shield, and aerodynamic performance have been refined. Additionally, all-new features such as micro-ratchet chin strap, extended inner sun shield, and intercom-ready design have been adopted for the new J-Cruise II.

Aerodynamic Performance

The new J-Cruise II boasts better aerodynamics largely due to the refined rear shape of the helmet, which integrates a spoiler into the shell design. The overall aerodynamic performance has been improved over the previous model. In-house wind tunnel tests confirm reductions in lift, drag, and yawing.

Interior Comfort System

The fabric used on the interior surface is a hybrid between a moisture-absorbent, quick-drying material and soft raised fabric. Moisture-absorbent and quickdrying material is used on areas that cover the cheeks and brow where sweat tends to stick; soft raised fabric is used on the parts that are close to where the skin tends to rub against when the rider wears/removes the helmet, offering greater snugness and optimum comfort while worn. On the J-Cruise II, SHOEI uses something more durable for the leather-like material on the lower edge of the cheek pad than before, adding a fabric pattern with attention to detail.

Ventilation

The ventilation system of the J-Cruise II has been upgraded with an additional intake hole which increases air intake by 30% over the previous model. Additionally, the exhaust outlet has been reshaped with a patent pending design, thus improving exhaust venting by 20%. These systems have been thoroughly measured in SHOEI’s in-house wind tunnel testing facility.

Shoei J-Cruise II: Feel The Breeze, Quietly

A new open face for the open road..

Shoei J-Cruise II Helmet

Are you a rider who loves open face helmets? Shoei’s got you covered. Following up on their J-Cruise helmet, the manufacturer has just introduced the J-Cruise II. It’s evolved in several ways, from allegedly being quieter and protecting your face better from both wind and sun to improved aerodynamics and cooling performance. Let’s take a look at the details.

Other Helmet News:

touratech aventuro traveller modular helmet

Open face helmets are known for great airflow, but Shoei redesigned their vents to flow even more air through the J-Cruise II than its predecessor. While improving its airflow, Shoei says that it has simultaneously worked to reduce wind noise. We’ll clearly have to wait and see what reviews say once people start actually getting their hands on this thing, but that can only be good news if it’s true.

Gallery: Shoei J-Cruise II Helmet

Shoei J-Cruise II Helmet

Both the external face shield and the internal drop-down sun visor have been extended to provide greater protection against wind, road debris, and sun. Shoei claims that its sun visor is distortion-free, much like its external visor—and also that it blocks 99 percent of UV rays. I’m the kind of person who automatically slaps sunscreen on my face whenever I ride, but I’ll never turn down extra UV protection. The external face shield is also Pinlock Evo-compatible.

The J-Cruise II features Shoei’s proprietary Advanced Integrated Matrix (AIM) shell, about which you can find more specifics here . This lid comes in sizes ranging from XS to XXL, and Shoei created four shell sizes to cover that helmet size range. A ratchet-closure chinstrap helps keep the lid in position once you’ve got it on.

Shoei teamed up with Sena to provide the SRL and SRL2 comm units that work specifically with this helmet. You can find it in five solid colors (three shiny, two matte), at an MSRP of $549.99. Available colors are Black, Matte Black, White, Anthracite, and Blue. The Black, White, and Anthracite appear to have a bit of a shine to them, while the Matte Black and the Blue both appear matte in photos. As always, the true test will be seeing these finishes in person.

Shoei J-Cruise II review: the open face that thinks it’s a full face helmet.

Shoei J-Cruise II review: expensive but quality open face helmet.

Shoei’s J-Cruise helmet has been around for a few years now and has built a reputation as being a high quality open face helmet, but kind of like an open face that thinks it’s a full face.

shoei-j-cruise-II-gloss-white-front-view

That’s because Shoei designed it to offer pretty well all the functionality of a full face helmet , just without the chin bar.

The original J-Cruise was very well received with hardly any areas of weakness reported. So now it’s on with that difficult follow up: to try and replace the J-Cruise with a helmet that’s even better than the original.

So, Shoei’s taken that first helmet and tried to make the J-Cruise II that bit better in what seems to be more or less every area. They say it’s slightly lighter, better venting, has improved aero, a better sealing main visor and a slightly deeper sun visor.

But then they all say something along those lines whenever a helmet’s launched.

So, here’s what the Shoei J-Cruise II is actually like – taken from the comments and opinions of riders around the web who actually own one.

  • Fibreglass composite AIM Shell
  • Four shell sizes (that’s lots)
  • Drop down sun visor
  • Integrated bluetooth : SRL/SRL2
  • Pinlock ready visor ( Pinlock not included)
  • Micrometric fastener
  • Sizes XS-XXL
  • Expect to pay £430-£540

That’s because, if money’s no object and you want an open face helmet, then the Shoei J-Cruise II is a cracking helmet.

It’s an open face so don’t expect it to stop your chin/face/nose taking a battering if you have an off.

If you really need the freedom of an open face helmet but want something that’ll protect you as well, then how about checking out one of these modular helmets rated as top for safety instead?

But it is a solid helmet shell material, evidenced by other AIM helmets scoring pretty well when SHARP tests them.

For example, the retro Shoei Glamster’s got an AIM shell and that scored 4 stars out of 5 when tested by SHARP. Same with the Ex Zero and Neotech II – both AIM shells and both 4 star rated.

So, given that every AIM shelled Shoei scored a  four star rating (apart from the original GT Air that scored three) we’d have to say that, were SHARP to test the shell of the J-Cruise II (which they won’t because it’s not got a chin bar) then I guess it probably would score 4 stars.

That’s just what you want to see with a premium priced helmet like the J-Cruise 2 and means the helmet you buy should be well optimised for fit, size and safety.

So that means there’s one shell size each covering fitment sizes XS-S, M, L and XL-XXL.

shoei-j-cruise-II-Adagio-black-red-motorbike-helmet-side-view

Other than the helmet shell, you get optically correct visor and sun visor, there to reduce distortion and the sun visor to prevent dazzling on sunny days.

And the main visor’s Pinlock-ready (Pinlock not included unfortunately) so fitting a Pinlock should pretty well prevent visor fogging (see visor section below).

The J-Cruise II also uses a metal micrometric fastener ; which are particularly easy to use – just always ensure the strap adjustor’s tightened up from time to time so your helmet doesn’t have the chance to come loose.

All in all then, the J-Cruise II does a good job of making a protective helmet; just not anywhere near as protective as a full face or the safest modulars .

They’ve also pushed some ear pads inside and made the visor fit tighter, slightly re-shaping it to divert the air.

(more about visors)

The main visor on the J-Cruise 2 is massive, giving you a great view of the road ahead, your clocks and pretty well all around you, even when the visor’s down.

It’s an optically correct visor too, which is useful with the visor being so large. And it’s quick change too, so you can pull it off quickly simply by opening the visor then pushing a lever either side and pulling it free.

Just like the old J-Cruise helmet, it uses a super low tech peg and hole lock to keep the visor closed. Even though it’s a system that’s as old as the hills (and probably older!), it seems like it works just fine because we didn’t find anyone complaining about it online. Job done.

A couple of useful links…

– All our Shoei helmets reviews – – Open face helmet reviews –

Surprisingly for an open face helmet, lots of owners reckoned they can have a problem with fogging. I guess that’s what happens when you make such a large and well sealed visor on a helmet – even if it’s an open face.

That shouldn’t be a particular problem on the J-Cruise II as Shoei has made the visor Pinlock ready. Bizarrely, they haven’t included a Pinlock insert free in the box (like they do on this £100 MT Rapide for example!) which is taking the piss a little on such an expensive lid.

Shoei_J-Cruise II_Intercom

Still, at least there is the option for a Pinlock available I guess.

Making a Pinlock Evo available for the J-Cruise II is arguably tacit admittance that it is prone to some fogging. So too is the addition of a cracked-open city riding position for the visor – usually there to let more air in and help with defogging.

Then again, stick any piece of cold polycarbonate in front of your face on a cold or humid day and it’s probably going to fog up, so it’s good to know Shoei’s taken steps to address it.

What also good to know is that Shoei says their polycarb visor cuts out 99% of UV rays. Polycarbonate’s known for cutting out at least 95% anyway, but it’s always good to see an exact figure, especially if you’re planning on riding somewhere sunny.

(more about sun visors)

The same figure’s quoted for the sun visor too – another 99% protection against UV. And Shoei’s apparently got that European Certified, sticking a DIN EN1836 certification on the sun visor. Hurrah.

shoei-j-cruise-II-matt-blue-open-face-helmet-front-view

In the US that equivalent is the ANSI Z80.3-2010 standard which means it should give about as much protection as a pair of shades – and includes a test to ensure it won’t burst into flames. Which is always good to know!

Looks & Graphics

Shoei’s graphics always tend to be a bit on the conservative and muted side.

shoei-J-Cruise-II-helmet-rear-view

If you’re looking for a plain J-Cruise II, then you’ve a matt black, grey or blue to choose from or a gloss black or white.

J-Cruise II video

Their videos are usually a bit on the starchy side, but there’s some decent information in this video from Champion Helmets in the Netherlands (8m 30s).

It’s not a lot, but it means the J-Cruise II weighs around 1.4kg, down from the 1.5kg of the old helmet. It’s far from being the lightest open face helmet out there but it’s OK – and a few owners reckon the weight adds to its sense of quality too.

If you’re a glasses wearer, then the Shoei J-Cruise II is great for glasses . There’re glasses grooves inside and a several owners said there’s plenty of space to drop down the sun visor and main visor without interfering with your glasses.

Nolan-n40-5-GT-N-com-solid-white-motorcycle-helmet-side-view

First up, and in a similar vein to the J-Cruise II – and even more practical – is the Nolan N40-5  GT. It’s a supremely versatile modular helmet that can be converted into a jet by fully removing the chin bar. The best of both worlds!

sena savage helmet with short peak

Or what about the Sena Savage ? It’s a fibreglass open face helmet that comes with a bluetooth communicator pre-installed. OK it’s a reasonably basic bluetooth, but most owners find it’s fine. And it’s a decent wodge cheaper than the J-Cruise II. Mind you, you’d have to make do with a snap on visor.

shoei jo helmet hawker side view

The fibreglass Shoei Jo has one built in tho.
