If Safari doesn't open a page or work as expected on your Mac

If Safari doesn't load a webpage, stops responding, quits unexpectedly, or otherwise doesn't work as expected, these solutions might help.

These solutions are for issues that can affect Safari on Mac, including issues such as these:

A webpage is blank, doesn't load all of its content, or otherwise doesn't work as expected.

You can't sign in to a webpage, despite using the correct sign-in information.

A webpage asks you to remove or reset cookies.

Safari slows down, stops responding, or quits unexpectedly.

If you're using an iPhone or iPad, learn about solutions for Safari on iPhone and iPad .

Reload the page

From the menu bar in Safari, choose View > Reload Page. Or press Command-R.

If Safari doesn't reload the page, quit Safari, then try again. If Safari doesn't quit, you can press Option-Command-Esc to force Safari to quit .

If Safari automatically reopens unwanted pages, quit Safari, then press and hold the Shift key while opening Safari. Learn how to control which windows Safari automatically reopens .

Install software updates and restart

Update macOS , which can include updates for Safari. If your Mac didn't restart automatically, choose Apple menu  > Restart. Some important background updates take effect only after restarting.

Check Safari extensions

If you installed any Safari extensions, turn extensions off. From the menu bar in Safari, choose Safari > Settings (or Preferences). Click Extensions, then deselect each extension to turn it off. Learn more about Safari extensions .

If you find that an extension is causing the issue, make sure that the extension is up to date.

Test with a private window

A website can store cookies, caches, and other data on your Mac, and issues with that data can affect your use of the website. To prevent the website from using that data, view it in a private window: From the menu bar in Safari, choose File > New Private Window, or press Shift-Command-N.

If that works, use the following steps to remove the website's data, including its caches and cookies. The website can then create new data as needed. If it's a website that you sign in to, make sure that you know your sign-in information before continuing.

Choose Safari > Settings (or Preferences), then click Privacy.

Click Manage Website Data.

Select the affected website from the list shown.

Click Remove.

Click Done.

Open the website again in a non-private browser window.

Check Safari settings

The webpage might not be compatible with one or more browser settings, which you can turn on or off as needed. From the menu bar in Safari, choose Safari > Settings (or Preferences). Then click Websites, Privacy, or Security to access these settings:

Privacy settings . These settings apply to all websites. For example, a website might require that you allow cross-site tracking, show your IP address, or allow cookies.

Security settings . These settings apply to all websites. For example, a website might require that you enable JavaScript.

Websites settings . These settings can be configured for specific websites. For example, a website might require that you allow pop-up windows, allow downloads, allow access to your camera or microphone, or turn off content blockers.

Check iCloud Private Relay

If you subscribe to iCloud+ and are using its Private Relay feature, try reloading the page without Private Relay: From the menu bar in Safari, choose View > Reload and Show IP Address. This menu item appears only when Private Relay is turned on for your network. Learn more about iCloud Private Relay .

Check VPN or other security software

If you installed VPN or other software that monitors or interacts with your network connections, that software could affect your use of the website or the internet. Learn about network issues related to VPN and other software .

Check network settings

Certain network settings, such as custom proxy settings or custom DNS settings , can affect access to content on the internet. Even if you haven't changed these or other network settings yourself, you might have installed software that changed them for you.

To find out whether the issue is with the network settings on your Mac, try viewing the page from a different web browser or different device on the same network. Or reset your network settings by setting up a new network location on your Mac.

If the issue affects other devices and web browsers on the same network, the issue is probably with the website, and you should contact the website developer for help.

If the issue continues to affect only a particular webpage, contact the website developer for help.

Drives me insane that I have to drag and resize it every time I open Safari. Tried to find a solution on here, including one user's solution from 2018 which they claimed worked which was typing defaults delete com.apple.Safari "NSWindow Frame BrowserWindowFrame" into terminal, but all it says is Domain (com.apple.Safari) not found. Defaults have not been changed. Very frustrating and just want to have everything straightened out!

NoBoMac

What works for me: Safari > Quit, restart Safari, adjust window location/size, Safari > Quit again, restart. Where locations get messed up, from what I notice, is if opening multiple windows: usually same size, but location gets remembered for the new window(s). Why I use tabs. Also works for Finder windows: close Finder window, re-open Finder window, adjust, close window.

1. close all Safari windows (but don't quit the app) 2. open a new Safari window 3. resize and locate it "to your liking" 4. once more, quit Safari. I don't believe there is any "default" setting for where or how large the window is when Safari opens. What happens is, Safari "remembers" where the last open window was (and its size), when it re-opens again.

What worked for me is enabling Full Disk Access first, for the Terminal app. You can do this through the following steps: 1. Open Settings. 2. Click Security & Privacy. 3. Select the Privacy Tab. 4. Scroll to find "Full Disk Access". 5. Click the lock icon on the bottom-left to allow changes. You need to enter your password. 6. Under Full Disk Access, find "Terminal" from the list and tick the checkbox. 7. Click the lock icon again to prevent further changes. And that's it, try to run defaults delete com.apple.Safari "NSWindow Frame BrowserWindowFrame" again in the terminal and it will work now.

AppleScript use Safari window ID to create new tabs

I have an AppleScript that creates a new Safari document, then opens multiple URLs in that window using a repeat loop. I would like the script to continue using the same window even if it's not the frontmost window.

(The problem is that if a user changes focus to another Safari window this script will open the URLs in the frontmost window instead of the previously created window.)

I would like to solve this issue by using the window id if possible but need some help on the scripting.

To that end I have created the following but again I think there might be an issue. I would rather not get the id using front window since a user could change the front window at an inopportune time and the script would pull the wrong window ID.

I would rather use something like

Even using the above I have been unable to open URLs in a window by using it's window id and need help with that scripting as well.

It would function something like this:

  • 1 Just an FYI.. I've modified the example AppleScript code in my answer to use the window id directly and avoid using the index property of the window . –  user3439894 Commented Aug 24, 2020 at 5:50

Update to address concerns of the use of: front window.

The following example AppleScript code guarantees the list of URL s gets opened in the target window regardless of its position in the z-order of windows .

Note: Scroll as needed to see all the code .

The updated example AppleScript code includes some error handling , in that if the tmp file (value of the tmpFileName variable ) is not created the script aborts without any message. This can be changed by converting the if not my writeToFile ... statement to a full if block and include an appropriate display alert , display dialog or display notification command , as wanted, followed by the return command .

As coded, this renders --> document "Untitled" returned from the make new document irrelevant, because with the included repeat loop it waits until the HTML file is loaded and can be queried by the actual name of the document as defined by the <title>" & windowName & "</title> tags in the document and ensures that the z-order is irrelevant.

The repeat loop as coded is written to wait up to 3 seconds for the HTML file to load and should be more than enough time. Adjust if necessary.

I opted to forgo the use of the do shell script command as used in your answer, however, if you prefer to use it, then:

Then remove the on writeToFile(theData, theFile, overwriteExistingContent) handler from the -- # Handler # section of the code .

Additionally, if you prefer a do shell script command to remove the tmp file , the value of the tmpFileName variable , then:

Original Answer

The following example AppleScript code is an example of how to open a list of URLs in the same window of Safari , regardless of its window order.

  • Do not use open location as it's a part of Standard Additions , not Safari . Use the URL property to set the URL of the document or tab .
  • Use a list of URLs and the index of the list item ( URL ) in the list .
  • When Safari is instructed to make new document , the new document becomes the front window of Safari . Get the window id of the front window immediately after the make new document command .
  • For subsequent URLs in the list , start the repeat loop at 2 and use the window id which was ascertained directly after the make new document command was executed.

  • Is there a way to do this so the newly created window has a location, front or back, and also has bounds? –  John Commented Apr 13, 2021 at 17:39
  • @John, For changing the position/size of the window you can use the bounds command after the set winID to id of front window command , e.g., set bounds of window id winID to {0, 23, 1024, 768} . However, setting the position of the window , the value of the index of the window is not so straightforward, as it can depend on how many windows and what position you want to move the front window to. –  user3439894 Commented Apr 13, 2021 at 19:51
  • @John, Have a look at this answer , you can take the lines of code from within the tell application "Finder" block and use that code to move the newly created window to the back of the z-order . You could add it after the. set winID to id of front window command or the, e.g., set bounds of window id winID to {0, 23, 1024, 768} command . –  user3439894 Commented Apr 13, 2021 at 19:51

@user3439894 I accepted your answer - it answers the question well. There is another way - a hackie way to create an ID for a Safari window.

This allows the following commands to avoid using "front window" in case the window that was created is no longer frontmost when the rest of the commands begin - doubtful, but possible.

I am not sure there is a way to give a new window anything other than "Untitled" as a name while creating the window.

  • 1 John, Please see the Update to address concerns of the use of: front window section of my updated answer. Borrowing the concept from your answer I incorporated it into a fully functioning update of my original answer. Thanks. –  user3439894 Commented Apr 14, 2021 at 18:53

Fix Safari Private Window Empty Page

July 31 2024.

Dearest gentle reader, this author opens new Safari windows with an empty page, like a proper member of The Ton.

A new private window normally appears as below, untitled.

Back in April, I posted on Mastodon about a bug introduced in Safari Technology Preview version 192 that caused the start page rather than an empty page to be shown in new private windows. Although a later version of Safari Technology Preview fixed this bug, it nonetheless made its way into Safari version 17.5 and continues to plague Safari 17.6.

I thought the purpose of Safari Technology Preview was to find and fix bugs before they affected Safari?

Oddly, the wrong private window appeared on my Mac mini but not on my MacBook Pro. Naturally, then, I decided to diff the output of defaults read com.apple.Safari from the two Macs. After some experimentation, I discovered the culprit: the Safari defaults included the key PrivateBrowsingExplanationState on my MacBook Pro but not on my Mac mini. You can use the following Terminal command to work around the Safari bug and restore the empty page to new private windows.

defaults write com.apple.Safari PrivateBrowsingExplanationState -integer 1

Remember, gentle reader, you heard it first in these pages!

Go step by step and test.

1. Update Safari, if an update is available. Update may come with bug fixes.

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204416

2. Quit Safari, launch Safari holding the Shift key down.

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203987

3. Startup in Safe Mode. https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/start-up-your-mac-in-safe-mode-mh21245/mac .

It also does a basic check of your startup disk, similar to  using First Aid in Disk Utility .

And it deletes some system caches, including font caches and the kernel cache,

which are automatically created again as needed.

4. Clear History

    https://support.apple.com/guide/safari/clear-your-browsing-history-sfri47acf5d6/mac

Please read the article before clearing history,

this is like a low level resetting of Safari without affecting passwords and bookmarks.
