Storm IQ Tour Emerald

The IQ line of balls has been a dramatically mixed bag for me.

The IQ TOUR SOLID is one of the most popular and successful balls in bowling history, and I could not make it work for me despite repeated efforts.

In contrast, the IQ TOUR PEARL truly has been Gold Magic for me: the greatest house shot ball I’ve ever thrown and one that remains in my arsenal, with an undrilled backup in my basement. There simply is no other ball that gives me what the GOLD does.

I had some solid success with the IQ NANO and occasional success with the IQ 30.

Considering that the PEARL was such a huge success for me, I was really looking forward to getting the IQ TOUR EMERALD, which is a remake of the famous gold ball with the R2S pearl coverstock and C3 Centripetal Control core.

Before I got mine drilled, I had heard from some other staffers who generally felt it was stronger than the GOLD, but not quite as strong as the 30.

I used my favorite pin-up strong drilling on the EMERALD, which also is the drilling I've had the most success with on the GOLD. With my PAP of 4 7/8 over and 5/8 up, the numbers are 5 pin-PAP, 2 7/8 MB-PAP and 3 1/2 pin buffer. It has no weight hole as I am trying balls without a weight hole under the new USBC option, then adding a weight hole later if needed to change reaction.

And that’s what I have seen so far, with the caution that my IQ TOUR PEARL has hundreds of games on it and therefore isn’t going to be as robust as it originally was.

I would say it is close to as strong as the 30, but with smoother motion: the 30 was a ball I could easily 2-10 and solid 9 with, and was almost skid-flippy.

I would say the EMERALD is a good arrow stronger than my GOLD, which probably makes it 2 to 3 boards stronger than a new GOLD.

What the two have in common is the strong, but smooth, curving, continuous motion — there is not flip or hockey stick to the EMERALD (or the GOLD). That comes from the low differential core that keeps the ball from a skid-flip reaction and makes it so controllable.

That motion is probably what makes the ball a favorite of mine, as it makes it easy to read and control, something I need in my old age with slower ball speed than I once had.

The EMERALD might be a touch harder to control because it is a touch stronger, which forced me to go a little bit more around it generally. But it also means I can use the EMERALD on more oil than the GOLD, and they are different enough that there is reason for me to keep both in my arsenal.

Other than that, there is not a lot more to say about the EMERALD.

If you liked the GOLD — if you liked the IQ line — chances are you will like the EMERALD.

If I was going to compare it to a non-IQ ball, I would say it is a step down from the ASTROPHYSIX, which is one of my favorites of the newest releases from Storm and Roto Grip.

Storm IQ Tour Emerald Ball Review

iq tour nano pearl vs iq emerald

Layout: 45 degrees x 4 1/2" x 70 degrees

RG: 2.49"

Differential: .029"

Surface: 1500 grit polished (factory finish)

Core shape: Symmetric

What I wanted from this ball: As I continue to drill new balls to fill my bags for a new season of bowling, I wanted something that would compliment my Pro Motion. I was looking for longer motion through the front part of the lane, coupled with a stronger backend motion. I was hoping for more of a sweeping arc shape, versus the hockey stick backend that become hard to control.

What I ended up with in this ball: This one's another great addition to the Storm lineup, and very different from the Astro Physix and Pro Motion that have come out this Summer (Astro Physix ball review to come in the next few days). The IQ Tour Emerald retains the low flare core shape from the entire IQ series. This gives the ball very good length through the heads, and a controlled breakpoint. Stronger flaring balls tend to react more quickly and will sometimes lose rotation more quickly, causing the ball to roll out. The IQ Tour Emerald has no sign of that whatsoever. This ball is a gradual arcing ball that continues throughout the backend better than most balls in the market right now.

I drilled it with my standard pin down drilling so that the ball would roll a little sooner than normal. One thing we typically do when drilling IQs is to drill them stronger than the standard layout that the bowler uses. With that low flare potential core, sometimes these balls can just go too straight and will miss the breakpoint without a little help. I was glad I used that lower pin on this ball, as this IQ gets plenty of length in this layout. With a higher pin up layout, I'm afraid I might have seen too much length following by a weaker backend motion.

I've left this ball in the factory box condition on purpose. I tend to like the Storm factory polished surface, in particular versus some other brands in the marketplace. I believe the strength of the shells on the Storm/Roto balls tend to match up well with this 1500 polished finish, so there's no need to knock the shine off before taking this to the lanes.

All in all, this looks to be a great new product from Storm, and it's certainly one of the best sellers in the market this Summer. You're likely to see a lot of these at leagues/tournaments this season. That's not just because it's a Storm ball. It's because it's a great piece that is going to play well on a wide range of lane conditions.

Storm IQ Emerald The Ultimate Review 2023

iq tour nano pearl vs iq emerald

The Storm IQ bowling ball will be well worth every penny. This is not a difficult call. Benchmark pearl operates for a lot of individuals.

Want to skip ahead to a particular section?

In General about Storm IQ Emerald Bowling Ball

This critique is for you to watch and participate as it’s fundamentally a re-release of this IQ Tour Pearl and IQ Tour 30. The c3 centripetal control core includes a very low RG and very low diff offering a smooth controller. The R2S pearl remains obviously among the greatest coverstocks in the company and has withstood the test of time. Cliche simple length but you get a sleek arcing transition that keeps coming on. And if the IQ Tour has turned into a staple, this is the only one I find more flexible. While the sound is eloquent smooth, this one is smooth with a few sodas. While the smooth is excellent to restrain game shots, together with my moderate rev speed and being around the left side, it wasn’t helpful on home shots. Together with the Pearl, home isn’t a problem while I could still utilize surface to allow it to hands-on game shots. It will respond to friction so in the event that you play too close you’ll get over response. In comparison to this IQ Tour, you are able to see exactly that easy response across the street.

storm iq emerald

I had a fantastic appearance with this IQ Tour emerald bowling ball. He can play with it relatively near the friction and it created a smooth but robust angle. He’d overlook space left-right and just about could not miss. Since the lanes split a little, a few 10 hooks creep in. But this is a super simple appearance to the pocket to get Bryan. Again, this is practically basic at this phase.

Storm IQ Tour emerald bowling ball specifications

Storm IQ Emerald The Ultimate Review 2023

We analyzed the 35 feet Kegel Boardwalk design. Frankly, I loved the response of this IQ Tour Emerald about the game shot. Still rather simple to reach the pocket with this smooth but powerful arcing downline movement. I’d have benefited from a small surface modification to get it to see only a bit earlier for fewer corner hooks. But I felt extremely comfortable on a fairly flat pattern not actually worrying about overreaction though it’s a glistening pearl.

It was somewhat poorer than state the Marvel Pearl therefore he needed to find somewhat more direct. After he discovered he could find the ball to push and take the corners out. It probably was somewhat finicky because there was a specified place where he got out a pinch it drove too difficult and when he transferred a different board left, it’d leave a corner. This could be a measure-down chunk for Bryan.

Can there be a lot left to say regarding the Storm IQ Tour emerald Pearl in whatever color that has not been mentioned? It is a terrific benchmark pearl ball. It is controlled but angular. When you can get those two, it is a good recipe for success on both sport and house shots. We enjoyed it we’re off to find the magician.

The IQ line of balls was a radically mixed bag for me.

The Storm IQ TOUR emerald SOLID is among the most popular and powerful balls in bowling history, and I couldn’t make it work for me despite repeated attempts.

By comparison, the Storm IQ TOUR emerald PEARL has been Gold Magic for me: the best home shot ball I have ever thrown and also one which stays in my toolbox, using an undrilled backup in my cellar. There is no other ball that gives me exactly what the GOLD does.

Storm IQ Emerald The Ultimate Review 2023

Considering the PEARL was such a massive success for me personally, I had been actually excited about obtaining the Storm IQ Tour emerald bowling ball, which will be a continuation of the famed gold ball using all the R2S pearl coverstock and C3 Centripetal Control core.

Before I obtained mine drilled, I’d heard from various other staffers who normally believed it had been more powerful compared to GOLD, although maybe not quite as powerful since the 30.

I used my favorite pin-up powerful drilling on the EMERALD, which is the drilling I have had the most success with around the GOLD. Together with my PAP of 4 7/8 over and 5/8 upward, the amounts are 5 pin-PAP, 2 7/8 MB-PAP, and 3 1/2 pin buffer. It’s no weight hole since I am trying balls with no weight hole beneath the new USBC alternative, then including a weight hole afterward if desired to alter the response.

And that is what I have observed up to now, with the warning that my Storm IQ TOUR emerald PEARL has countless games on it and consequently is not likely to be as powerful as it initially was.

I’d say it’s near as powerful as the 30, but with smoother movement: that the 30 was a chunk I could readily 2-10 and strong 9 with and has been nearly skid-flippy.

I’d say that the EMERALD is a fantastic arrow more powerful than my GOLD, which likely makes it two to 3 boards more powerful than a brand new GOLD.

Storm IQ Emerald The Ultimate Review 2023

What both have in common is that the powerful, but smooth, curving, constant motion — there’s not reverse or hockey stick into this EMERALD (or even the GOLD). This comes in the reduced differential c3 centripetal control core that retains the ball out of a skid-flip response and makes it controllable.

That movement is likely what makes the ball a favorite of mines it makes it effortless to control and read, something I want in my old age with slower ball speed than that I had. Performance bowling balls favored.

The EMERALD could be a touch more difficult to control since it’s a touch more powerful, which compelled me to go slightly more about it normally. But in addition, it means I may use the I q tour pearl on more petroleum compared to GOLD, and they’re different enough that there’s the reason for me to maintain both in my toolbox.

Aside from that, there’s not a ton more to say regarding the EMERALD.

If you enjoyed the GOLD – if you enjoyed the IQ lineup – odds are you may like the IQ tour pearl  EMERALD.

When I had been going to compare it to some non-IQ chunk, I’d say it’s a step down in the ASTROPHYSICS, that will be among my favorites of the most recent releases from Storm and Roto Grip.

Pattern THS: 40 ft Med THS

Specs The Storm IQ Tour Nano Pearl Bowling Ball uses the C3 Centripetal Core (symmetrical) inside the NRG Pearl coverstock.

15 pound = RG of 2.49, diff of .029 Coverstock finish: 3000 grit abralon

Category I would consider this ball in the mid control category.

Overall I must admit my first impression is a bit of a cop out. The world is almost certain to love the IQ Tour Nano Pearl, at least anyone who’s liked it before. The C3 Centripetal Core works for many people. Low diff excellent control. I always thought that it would be a great ball for me as a lefty but with the IQ Tour solid, it was more of a pocket control but mediocre carry. With the Nano Pearl, initially I saw a couple of flat 7s and thought oh here we go. But then some better execution and I saw stronger motion and good drive. The biggest issue I had was the cover in 3000 abralon seems simply too strong for this house pattern which forces me in while at the same time, this isn’t a loop the lane type core. Nevertheless it surprised me with more backend capabilities than I was expecting. This house shot is playing a bit reverse blocked so if you get outside downlane, you have no chance to get back to the headpin but it hooks a ton from inside. Feed into the friction a touch and I mean a touch too early and I’m through the face. Try to push it through and it doesn’t make the headpin.

Rather than focus on the pattern, I want to focus on the ball itself. I do like the shape the Centripetal core creates on lane and always have. This is a case where I actually want to take this surface up to make it work properly on this shot. My frustration was that I had to throw it too good to get results on the house shot. So I had to make a second trip to see it again on a sport shot.

The IQ Tour Nano Pearl is smooth yet has some boominess downlane. It responds to friction smoothly but pretty strongly. I typically find balls with weaker cores and strong covers not matching my game but this match up didn’t feel terrible for me as the core doesn’t puke downlane.

For Bryan, he saw the same thing. Initially he was going through the face and if projecting right, it doesn’t recover. Once he realized this ball was reading way earlier than the Parallax and Trend we tested, he paralleled everything in going about 14 to 11. The ball created a nice arcing shape which is what you expect from this ball. The “too much surface, too weak a core” syndrome is exacerbated with Bryan’s game. So giving away the pocket was a no-no. He benefited a bit from some shim in but out was a no-go, especially with this much surface out of box.

Sport Shot For the Sport shot, I tested on the Kegel Arsenic pattern, a 41ft a 1.3:1 25.79ml pattern. I have to admit this is one tricky pattern, kind of like Red Square in many regards. I started out with more confusion than solutions. The pattern is not one conducive to direct play. It requires some angle but the breakpoint at the edge is extremely difficult to maintain. If you play it too close say you need 8 and hit 7.5, you are leaving a (3-7-9) 2-8-10. Miss to 10 and you’re brooklyn. So this is a pattern I feel fall back can be very effective. You want to take advantage of the backend motion while moving away from the absolute cliff. I thought I would struggle mightily after the first bunch of shots but once I started getting to the 4th arrow to 10, the shot was great. I could move in 3-2 every few balls and even with my rev rate get a pretty good look. Not to forget that I can still leave corners, the IQ Tour Nano Pearl reminded me with rap 7 and flat pocket 7-10. At the end, you give up the more aggressive movement in favor of consistency and that is key on tougher patterns many times.

Final Thoughts Where are we with the Storm IQ Tour Nano Pearl? If you have loved this series and have been looking for the return of the IQ Tour Nano, this is darn near close enough. The ball will not surprise and it’s sure to be successful. To those that loved this series, they will get all the benefits they’ve previously seen. Great control, smooth but arcing motion. High rev bowlers and those bowling on sport shots need a ball like this in their bag. If you were plagued by certain limitations from this series, you are likely to still see some of that. So pocket control but some flat corners are still there, albeit a bit less than what I’ve experienced with say the IQ Tour. For my game, I tend to lean towards bigger cores with weaker covers for control vs the opposite which is the case with the IQTNP. However, I always wished I held onto the IQ Tour Nano as it was a bit different and this is my chance.

Storm IQ Tour Nano Pearl Bowling Ball Features :

The IQ Tour Nano Pearl is the next pairing of the C3 Centripetal Control Core with a proven coverstock from the Storm library. The NRG Pearl cover was used previously on the Virtual Gravity Nano Pearl, while this symmetrical core was used most recently in the  IQ Tour Emerald . The IQ Tour Nano Pearl comes out of the box sanded at 3000 Abralon, allowing it to start up strongly in the midlane. The pairing of the smoother coverstock and lower flaring core design offers a tremendous combination of control and power.

We’re just like you. We’ve never been more excited about the game’s latest equipment. We can’t wait to toss every core, cover, and finish to create something unique to its own. The !Q Tour Nano Pearl is one of those balls that made it through our rigorous scrutiny that’ll be a game-changer for you. We know it. We tried it. We’re just like you.

Workable and forgiving, the C3 Centripetal Control Core is a design that revs up quickly, providing a smoother change of direction downlane. This shape is beneficial for players requiring control at the breakpoint. Used only in the !Q Tour series of balls, this core is precisely designed and manufactured using proprietary technology.

With the cover that was first introduced on the Virtual Gravity Nano, NRG nanotechnology is essentially manufacturing with atoms. It gives bowlers increased oil traction due to the micro-dynamic enhancements of the surface.

The replacements: storm iq emerald bowling ball – roto grip hyped pearl or hustle wine, what is the best bowling ball to replace your storm iq emerald bowling ball.

If You Love Your Storm IQ Emerald What Bowling Ball Should You Replace It With?

Hello and welcome to another video in the Replacements series where I’ll be trying to help you find a suitable replacement for the at least theoretically popular IQ Tour Emerald which was a remake of the IQ Tour Pearl slash gold ball.  BowlersMart and Coolwick , links in the description and at the end of the video, get your Storm and Turbo gear there, and if you’re in the market for older, rare, used, or international stuff, check out Storm Roto Grip Bowling Balls For Sale on Facebook, best place out there to find that stuff.

Storm IQ Emerald Bowling Ball

So first things first, the Emerald wasn’t really that popular.  It should have been, and there was a bunch of buzz early, but it got discontinued because it wasn’t selling.  People still ask about it, talk highly about it, and complain about it being discontinued, but talk doesn’t keep stuff in production.  People are incensed about the Idol being discontinued but the company shipped 20 balls worldwide the last two months it was in production, that kind of tells them the ship has sailed and that they need to move on.  People were mad about the gold ball, when it got discontinued that’s all they could talk about was a rerelease.  It got remade in the Emerald, lot better looking and smelling ball, and people were excited but that didn’t last long.  This video is about a compromise, highly doubt we’ll ever get another R2S Pearl IQ Tour, but it’s too good of a look on the lane, it’s too important of a reaction to not have in one of the lines somewhere.  This is the reason the IQ Tour is still around, the Hyroad , Phaze 2 , but not everything can stick around forever.  Sometimes we lose important reactions, but if they’re important enough, they’ll be there somewhere, and sometimes they’re even reinvented.  5 or 6 years ago when the original Phaze came out, people hated it by and large, it was a pearl that wasn’t an RST X-2 or a UC2, it was pretty smooth and rolly.  Nobody realizes it, but it was basically the Zen, which has been the most popular ball on the planet for almost a year.  I loved the original Phaze, all 3 that I had back then, and the 4th I currently have lefty, don’t think that video and an immeasurable amount of gloating isn’t coming, mostly because apparently I crave attention, that’s why I have a YouTube channel about BOWLING, you know, it’s all for the fanfare and media coverage. Moving on, the pairing of a medium strength cover with a low rg low differential core is about control and predictability.  Again, the lower the RG is, the earlier the ball wants to roll and rev, think back to the figure skater analogy in the classroom video.  The lower diff however is what promotes the control, just enough imbalance in the core to get a bit of flare ring separation so you get some fresh cover exposed to the lane, but with longer bowties or the areas where the rings cross each other so you get a nice blend of traction and control both down the lane and on the backend.  The polished cover gives you a shape compliment to the IQ Tour, more length and more pop for when the lanes start drying up.  The IQ Tour is a pretty good ball all the way around, but it’s iffy on house shots.  The Emerald could split duty, it had enough shape to hang on a house shot but enough control to back up the Tour Solid on tougher stuff.

Roto Grip Hustle Wine Bowling Ball

The two balls we’re looking at are the Roto Grip Hustle Wine and recently released Hyped Pearl, we’ll start with the Wine . . for the video at least, I’m having a nip of Whistlepig Rye on the rocks.  2.53 RG, .030 differential, so a few ticks higher on the RG, negligible diff on the diff, that adds a little length, and shape actually as a byproduct.  If the ball starts rolling and revving a little later, it doesn’t start up so soon, leaving more shape for the end of the lane.  This does however reduce the midlane control a little, which in the case of the Wine seems to be a little more theoretical or an on paper kind of thing.  VTC Pearl is also a little weaker than R2S Pearl that’s on the Emerald, but it doesn’t seem to be that much weaker.  The Wine is a bit longer and marginally quicker than the IQ Emerald, but the shapes are incredibly similar.  I don’t think the Wine is quite as strong as the Emerald, but realistically it’s close enough that it’s hard to notice.

Roto Grip Hyped Pearl Bowling Ball

I made mention that the Wine was virtually an Emerald in the review, or the closest thing we’ve had since it was discontinued, but then we got the Hyped Pearl Bowling Ball , and spoiler alert, it’s closer to the Emerald than the Wine is in our opinion.  Just a smidge lower on the RG than the Wine, 2.52, while the differential is up at .036.  The Hyped core rolls heavier than the Hustle core, and despite the RG still being a few ticks higher than the Emerald, the heavier roll and bit extra diff makes up for that and gets the Hyped Pearl to do all the same things in all the same places.  Again, I don’t think VTC Pearl is QUITE as strong as R2S Pearl, but it’s close enough that you’d have to have a pretty specific set of circumstances or conditions to see the difference, and even then it’d be pretty small.

So Which Bowling Ball Is The Best Replacement For The Storm IQ Emerald

So to recap, the Hyped Pearl is definitely the closest, however, if you liked the Emerald but felt it was a little too early and slow sometimes, the Wine might be the fix or the adjustment to make the match up click for you better.  Now if you don’t mind spending an extra 50 to 75 bucks, Emerald’s are still available, and the price is actually coming down because there’s not as much of a rush on them as people were expecting.  Usually I’d recommend stashing a ball or two of the ones you really like, in this case, this type of reaction is going to there somewhere in some form or another pretty well indefinitely.  While I’ve got a handful of balls stashed myself, they’re very specific things that I don’t think we’re going to see again, most people hated the SPEC cover so I know we aren’t getting any more Pro Motions, so thanks for that ya dummies, and I’d really be surprised if we ever see an IQ Tour Nano Pearl type look again once it’s discontinued.  Outside of that, I don’t tend to worry too much.  The PhysiX got replaced with the RST X1, the Astro got replaced with the UC2 and kind of the RST X-2, the Sure Lock got replaced with the Reality, took a few years but it’s a thing now, and so on and so forth.  Spoiler alert for future episodes, but we’ll call it a teaser and pretend I haven’t had too much Whistlepig.  Thanks for watching and may the strikes be with you.

We collectively gathered our thoughts and perspectives on what we felt the HP2 line truly stands for and what it should be. We then went to work developing and constructing what is now known as the Hyped Core. Measuring in as the lowest RG core we have ever offered in the HP2 line, the Hyped Core provides more overall motion than the balls offered in the HP1 line, while providing a touch less motion than our HP3 line offerings. Thus, making this one of the best options we have ever constructed for the HP2 line of balls in history. So, if you weren’t already excited, it is now time to GET HYPED!

From the beginning, the end goal for the Hyped Core was to create a core design that would provide us more overall ball motion than the Hustle Core found in the HP1 Line, while also creating a viable step down option (less performance) than the motions found from our HP3 Line of balls. In the end, our R&D Team hit it out of the park with creating a core shape that provides medium flare and the ideal ball motion for the HP2 Line of balls moving forward.

The Burners have been purposely engineered to give you a reliable reaction when the lanes have broken down.

The R2S delivers a perfect balance

R2S is synonymous with some of the most successful balls in recent history like the Hy-Road, Frantic, and the IQ Tour. It is renowned for clearing the front part of the lane with an unprecedented movement on the backend. The consistency of this shell through the heads is something to be marveled at.

This video is about a compromise, highly doubt we'll ever get another R2S Pearl IQ Tour, but it's too good of a look on the lane, it's too important of a reaction to not have in one of the lines somewhere. Two handed Rev Rate 590-600 Ball speed 18-20 Axis tilt 5-10 Axis Rotation 35-45 PAP: 5 over 1.5 down The !Q Tour Edition is by far one of my favorite benchmark balls I have in my bag. I put a 3.75x4x4.5 2LS on my latest one. It gives it a very smooth arching motion even on some heavier conditions. The ball handles angles and surface changes very well.

  17. Hyroad Pearl or IQ tour emerald : r/Bowling

The hyroad is a ten pin pig. It seems to stop driving on me, it is less than a month old. However, that pearl green IQ doesn't do this at all. It will drive through for me. I am low rev 215 avg player. I also find myself going to the IQ pearl way more sooner at tournaments and at home than I originally thought I would.

  18. Difference?

So at www.bowling.com right now they are selling the IQ Tour Nano for $96 and it's available in 12-14, and I throw 14. Now nice been wanting the IQ Solid for a while now, for its low differential and it's strong benchmark shape. But with like a $40-50 price difference, it's tempting not to buy the Nano.
