Ridiyagama Safari Park in Hambantota (හම්බන්තොට රිදියගම සෆාරි උද්යානය)
Ridiyagama Safari Park is 500 acre safari park, zoo in Ridiyagama area of Hambantota District, Sri Lanka. The park was opened to the public on 28 May 2016. Although the park reservation is 500 acres in size, only about 200 acres are currently been developed and is been gradually enlarged. The plan has envisaged nine zones for separate wildlife and at present four zones are operational.
The park was developed to give the freedom of movement to animals as much as possible and the visitors to be caged. The 80 acre mammal zone comprise of a large verity of grazers and some flightless birds from Americas, Africa and Asian countries. These include rare to see mammals such as Cape Buffalos, Zebras, camels, antelopes guanacos and Ostriches.
The elephant zone is 54 acres in size. There are number of small elephant groups as well as an African Elephant with a pair of majestic tusks roaming the ground. This African elephant has been moved to this park from the Dehiwala Zoological Gardens.
There are six Balali Tigers in the the 5 acre Bengal Tiger Zone. All are quite used to humans and walk up to vehicles without fear. Next is the Lion Zone. There are 14 lions in this zone. Seven lions were initially brought from various countries at the initiation of the park. The balance 7 have been born in park itself and another male lion born at the site has been donated to the Ambepussa Sinha Regiment of the Sri Lanka Army as their mascot.
One major disadvantage at this site is that personal vehicles are not allowed to enter the safari grounds. Therefore a visitor has only 2 options, use some of the few busses with meshed windows or hire one of the few jeeps available. Unfortunately busloads of visitors come here on weekends and on holidays thus you may spent a good half a day under the dry sun awaiting for your bus ride or waiting for a jeep to be vacant.

Ridiyagama safari park – sri lanka’s first-ever safari experience.
Being a tropical paradise with abundant flora and fauna found all over the island, Sri Lanka has a lot to offer when it comes to observing wildlife. There are numerous forest reserves and jungles in almost every district of the country, varying from dry zone shrub forests to wet zone rainforests. But what about man-made zoos where people can observe animals? Ridiyagama Safari Park is the first-ever of its kind in Sri Lanka providing the space and freedom for the animals to roam freely amongst it own kind, but protected from other predatory species.
Ridiyagama Safari Park is located only an hours’ drive away from Tangalle. There are three different routes you can take to Ridiyagama Safari Park from Tangalle, the shortest route being just 47km. This route is laid through another major Southern coastal town of Sri Lanka, Ambalantota. It is fairly easy to find after taking a right turn from Ambalantota, as it is one of the most famous tourist attractions in the Southern Sri Lanka.
Ridiyagama Safari Park is spread over 500 acres of land and is home to both carnivorous and herbivorous animals alike. It is a large area of land where animals get to roam free, both mammals and birds, and visitors get to travel in protected vehicles to observe animals in their natural habitats.
The 500 acres of land is divided into six zones, with four of them occupying carnivorous animals, while the other two zones are the home to herbivorous animals. Carnivores that can be seen in Ridiyagama Safari Park are mainly lions, tigers and leopards. The African Lion zone is 35 acres in size, while the Sri Lankan Elephant zone is 54 acres in size.
The park provides an automated guide when you travel from zone to zone in the park. These are offered in park-provided buses, which you can hire at the entrance. If you remember the automated guide system in the first Jurassic Park movie, this is just like that! But it describes the mammals and birds of the current ecosystem, and not the prehistoric dinosaurs!
Ridiyagama is a must-visit on your trip to Southern Sri Lanka to see wild life being cared for in a stress-free environment. Despite being open to visitors since 2016, some areas of the park are still being constructed, so there will be something new to witness every time you choose to visit it. There is a small entrance fee to enter the park, only Rs. 350 for both locals and Rs. 3,000 for foreign visitors. There are buses you will take to go into the Safari Park at the entrance, or you can choose to have a full-on safari in a 4-wheel jeep as one would find in National Parks such as Udawalawe and Yala in Sri Lanka. The park is open every day from 8.30 AM to 4.30 PM, so a visit to Ridiyagama Safari Park can be fitted easily into your schedule.
Ridiyagama Safari Park is the perfect family getaway during your stay at Sooriya Resort and Spa, Rekawa. It will be a memorable experience for your kids and be educational, entertaining, and thrilling at the same time.

Perhaps it is the weather that makes the country such a wonderful place for animals to live in. Also, Ridiyagama Park especially makes ideal homes for them. During your adventure, you will notice why the park provides suitable living conditions for animals. The park is filled with a lot of aged trees and greenery. It certainly offers the best shelter for these animals. Through the safari experience, you will get a closer look at the fascinating wildlife without interrupting the natural setting.
Ridiyagama Park's zones explained
You will also notice that the park area is divided into six zones. Of which, four zones are dedicated to carnivorous animals, and herbivorous animals settle in the other two zones. Thanks to the land area being spacious, animals get to take up as much space as they want. They do not have to feel trapped or stuck. Instead, they can roam around to their heart's content.
Ridiyagama park has a 16-acre service station, a 35-acre African lion zone, a 54-acre Sri Lankan elephant enclosure, and 80 acres for herbivorous animal species of the world. The park hopes to construct African, Asian, and Australian zones, which is great news for all you animal lovers out there.

Ridiyagama Safari Park : The Kingdom of Animals
Travelmania.sl
Updated on: January 12, 2023
Ridiyagama Safari Park is a 500-acre safari park, a zoo in the Ridiyagama area of Hambantota District, Sri Lanka. It is the 1st of its kind in Sri Lanka because you can see most of the animals in the animal kingdom on the planet earth here including the lion king, Bengal tiger, Ostrich, Camel, Kangaroo, and various animals from the other part of the world. Due to its classification of Animals, it is possible to see almost all of the animals in one day.
It’s an open zoo and a new concept for Sri Lanka. Basically, humans are the ones who are caged and animals roam free. Humans have to travel in covered buses or safari jeeps to sight the animals. This park consisting of tigers, lions, zebras, and elephants has still scope for improvement. And they’re working on adding new varieties of animals and extending the park.
Reaching Ridiyagama Safari Park
The Ridiyagama Safari Park is in the Southern Province of Sri Lankan in the Ridiyagama area of the Hambantota district. The park is 65 KM away from Yala (1 hr 20 min drive), 110 KM away from Galle & Unawatuna (1 hr 30 min drive), and 220 KM away from Colombo city (3 hr 20 min drive). The park is located in close proximity to Sri Lanka’s E01 expressway, which makes the park easily accessible even by long-distance travel. However, public transport is not possible and privately arranged transport is recommended to reach the park.
The lifestyle of Animals in the Park
A new experience in Sri Lanka where the animals are in the open environment (not caged) and the travelers can go and visit the animals is fully protected bus or in a safari jeep (Optional with an additional Payment), I recommend Safari by Jeep for a pleasant experience. we can see many animals in this open zoo and the tour guides are providing excellent service by providing a descriptive introduction.
We have to go on a bus around the zoo or in a jeep. There were animals roaming around and they were imported from other countries. It is a must-visit place if you come near Ridiyagama. They will later include leopards, cheetahs, giraffes, and kangaroos. We saw many scary animals like African lions and Bengal tigers.
It is still developing to come to 500 acres when fully completed. There were 4 zones, namely Lion, Tiger, general and Elephants are presently underway. The first zone we saw was the Lion zone. They are from Africa. We saw 4 lions closer to the road lying down in the shade of the trees. The next zone is a common animal where you see Zebras, Horses. Donkeys, Camels, Ostrich, Hippos, etc. Another zone we saw was Bengal Tigers from India. The other zone is the elephant zone and one we saw was from India other Sri Lankan ones are very tame and even came near the Jeep.
Most of the animals looked well-nourished except for the elephants. They seemed to look starved and wrinkled skinned surrounded by a dusty forest area. The climate was really hot so if you are planning to visit this area be prepared for it. This place also consists of, washrooms, a spacious car park, and small shops with a variety of food and drinks.
Additional Info
- The safari park consists of two separate zones for carnivores and herbivores respectively
- It is safe for families and those who are not too passionate about wildlife
- Confirmation will be received at the time of booking
- Not wheelchair accessible
- Most travelers can participate
- This experience requires good weather. If it’s canceled due to poor weather, you’ll be offered a different date or a full refund
- This experience requires a minimum number of travelers. If it’s canceled because the minimum isn’t met, you’ll be offered a different date/experience or a full refund
- This is a private tour/activity. Only your group will participate
Special Warning
- Always keep your distance from Animals.
- Do not enter the restricted areas.
- So do not make noise (playing a musical instrument, radio, tape recorder & singing, etc.)
- Pets are not allowed into the Safari / Zoo premises.
- Keep your ticket with you.
- Please quote your ticket number & the date of the visit for future correspondence.
I recommend this place because you can experience many things. Overall, we were satisfied with the tour and it’s an ideal place to visit for both kids and adults. No doubt this will add one more landmark destination to the tourist map of Sri Lanka

Gujarat Titans (GT) are currently enjoying a break as they are slated to play their next game in the IPL 2024 on April 17 against Delhi Capitals (DC). The GT players seem to be making the most of the week off as they decided to pay a visit to nature.
On Friday, Gujarat Titans shared a photo on Instagram of the Afghan trio of Azmatullah Omarzai, Noor Ahmad and Rashid Khan, accompanied by team director Vikram Solanki, posing from the backseats of an open-roof jeep wandering through the forest lands.
The caption of the post read, “Exploring the forest like Titans”.
The photo seemed to have been clicked by Australian quick Spencer Johnson, who was attributed with the photo credits in the caption.

GT have been quite successful since they made their IPL debut in 2022.
In their maiden season, under the leadership of former captain Hardik Pandya, GT made it to the final and beat Rajasthan Royals (RR) to become only the second team in IPL history to win an IPL title in their very first edition.
Coincidentally, they matched RR’s record, the team they beat in the 2022 final, given the fact that RR had won the IPL in the inaugural season in 2008.
In 2023, they made it to their second consecutive final. Unfortunately, they couldn’t defend the title as Chennai Super Kings (CSK) won a last-ball thriller and clinched a joint-record fifth IPL trophy.

This season, following Pandya’s trade to Mumbai Indians (MI), Shubman Gill was handed over the reins. It has been a mixed bag of results in IPL 2024 so far for them.
GT have played six games, winning three games and losing as many. They won their opening game of the season against MI, but went on to lose against defending champions CSK.
They bounced back to win their second game, beating Sunrisers Hyderabad by seven wickets before falling to consecutive defeats to Punjab Kings and Lucknow Super Giants. That resulted in GT’s worst start yet to an IPL season after five games.
On Wednesday, Tewatia and Rashid Khan pulled off a heist and proved why GT are known as the chase masters. They broke RR’s unbeaten run to win by three wickets, pulling off the chase on the final ball.
