Detachable Tour Pak on a Street Glide

I am considering putting a detachable tour pak on my street glide and looking for input on how difficult of a job it is. I am sure it is not much different than a road king except for the antenna relocation so road king owners post your pros and cons. If any street glide owners have already done this how difficult is it to relocate the antenna. Thanks in advance.  

smokie- I purchased an 03' roadglide and have been making steps towards installing a removable tour-pack. To date, I have installed the front docking hardware and have purcased a removable backrest for my wife. At this point the antenna relocation is not necessary but since my radio reception wasn't up to par I went ahead and installed an electric antenna which I mounted inside the outer fairing. I have also purchased the rear docking hardware and a used tour-pack that I'm now getting painted. When it returns from paint I'll start on the rear docking hardware installation. Be careful with the docking hardware installation. The directions are not written as well as they could have been and can be a little confusing. My bike also came with custom strut covers that are wider than stock which also complicated the install. Anyway, the installation wasn't that bad but you may want to consider an electric remote antenna to solve the relocation issue. Mike:chopper:  

Relocate antenna to fairing and use RK detachable HW. The streetglide is built on a RK chassis so all of the hardware will work. Just relocate your antenna to the fairing, either a retractalble electric antenna, or buy the shorter rubber one. I have also heard of people putting the antenna inside the fairing using cable ties and the little adhesive strap-blocks for the cable ties. That gets it completely out of sight and if you shop around you can buy a small antenna amplifier to improve your reception at the same time, or go all out and go to XM. I considered doing this to a streetglide, but wound up buying a road king because I really didn't care about the radio and was unsure about a fairing, being used to riding behind a windshield. You would probably want to stay with the chopped tourpack to compliment the low lines of the Streetglide rather than the King which is 3 inches taller and takes the armrest style backrest pad.  

The first question I'd ask, how are you going to use the tour pak. For trips or leave it on all the time. I assume since you bought a Streetglide it was due to the custom look of the bike. A tour pak will simply ruin the lines on the bike. But if you are thinking of a tour pak for trips to carry extra luggage, I'd suggest another option. Bagtec Full Dresser (also sold under the Kuryakyn name) http://www.bagtec.com/FullDresserBag/ I have this bag for my Road King and it holds a lot more stuff than you can put in a tour pak and a lot less expensive. Once you get to the hotel, pop it off and roll it in. If you already have a back rest, just add the luggage rack to it and you're set. It comes with a rain cover that works great. 400 miles in the rain coming home from Milwaukee and the bag was bone dry when I got to my hotel. Good luck  

I really don't need the extra storage space as much as comfort for the passenger. Since I got the street glide I replaced the seat and put the tall passenger backrest on for passenger comfort. I have discovered the more comfortable my passenger is the longer our rides are becoming. I figured the tour pak and the seat would be more comfortable than the standard sissy bar. I can take the seat and sissy bar off in seconds for the look that got me on a bagger in the first place.  

I don't think that the tour pak is going to contribute to greater comfort for the passenger. When my buddy and I traded bikes (he has an eglide) for about 100 miles going to Myrtle Beach, my wife said she felt trapped by the tour pak and didn't have as much room to move around as she did on the Road King. I have the standard backrest with the large backrest pad.  

I just put a detachable king tour pack on my Street Glide this weekend. The quick detach bracket goes down thru the hole that the antenna sticks thru. You will either need to get a hidden antenna for the fairing (what I did), or you can flip the mounting bracket for the antenna around so it does not come thru the hole. I saw one done this way, but I prefer to have the antenna out of the way and hidden. I think that the bike still looks great with the tour pack installed. My girlfriend preferes to ride on the back with the tour pack instead of the sissy bar. We had an Ultra before, and I guess she was just use to it. I ordered the 05 model for the Electra Standard instead of the 06 model for the Street Glide. The 06 model comes with the antenna mount on the tour pack. I prefer the clean look. It only takes seconds to take the tour pack off and look like a Street Glide again. I also ordered the Sundowner seat and passenger floor boards.  

Thanks moorefun. That is what I was looking for. I sent you an email asking a few questions about the hidden antenna. I very rarely listen to the radio anyway but I guess it would be nice if you wanted to.  

I wish I'd have known about the antenna mount. I didn't notice it until I had everything installed. I'm going to put a little rubber antenna on there just so it at least looks like it's meant to be there.

I added a tourpak to my roadking. I did not use the detachable hardware as I did not like the looks of the brackets when the tourpak is removed which is most of the time. I modified the permanent mounting hardware so that I can install and remove the tourpak quickly and easily. See http://www.v-twinforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=80841&page=2 for photos. bb  

Have the detachable tourpac, sundowner seat and 7 1/2" lightly smoked windshield for my Streetglide for long 2 up trips. Love the way the bike feels with this set up. Wife makes a comfy backrest for me, just set the cruise and go. Also with the full length antenna I can pick up my favorite radio stations twice as far from home as any cage I have owned.

Easy install just remember to eyeball the rear fittings on the detachable and use the different size bushings so the arms of the detachable slide right into place. The bushings come in different widths for this reason. Once you have it lined up correctly it goes on with just one person no problems. I helped a friend after the shop put his on. He always needed two or three to help him line it up and pull or spread the bars apart. Replaced a couple of bushings and now no trouble installing by himself. Should have said spacer's instead of bushings. The install kit comes with two or three different sizes.  

My buddy has one set up on his Road Glide. He thinks it looks great, and I have to agree with him. His wife is MUCH more comfortable on long trips now. She says she likes where the pad meets her back, and having the big tourpak back there makes her feel more "secure".

I thought about this for a few weeks after I got back from Daytona back in March. I wanted the extra storage for longer trips. It was either a tour pak or a bag of some sort attached to a sissy bar. I ended up putting on a detachable chopped tour pak, I went this way because I really didn't like the looks of the bag, I could lock the tour pak and it was easier to get into in the event I need something inside. Since my wife rides her own bike the rider comfort wasn't an issue. I went the Ebay route for the tour pak, saved roughly $200 over HD but by the time I had it painted I didn't save anything. You can find a better deal on a king tour pak but IMO they just don't look as good as the chopped one.

I found a few threads on the topic but I still have questions. I am seriously considering getting this. I like the idea of being able to easily remove the tour pack. Any long term reliability issues? Does the tour pack rattle? If you have done this, any regrets? H-D Detachables Tour-Pak Luggage Conversion Kit  

So can I assume you already have the TP with solid mounts and you're considering buying the quick detach mounts? I only ask because if you don't already have the TP you just might find that the TP is so useful even just around town, that you'll spend all that money on the quick detach and then never use that feature except once in a blue moon to give the bike a thorough cleaning. Don't ask me how I know that .....  

Oh yeah, the quick detach system works just fine, doesn't rattle or fall off. It does give you a bit of a fight taking it off until you get used to how you need to do it.  

Yes, it vibrates a bit. Yes, I don;t take it off too often, but often enough that I am glad I have it detachable.

I will pass along one small bit of advice - if you are using a Mastercraft or lighter jack at home to lift your bike, then once you find the balancing spot to lift, if you have the TP either on or off, then you leave it like that as the weight will throw off your center of balance.  

I put it on my 17 RGU. I had read about the issue of the electrical connectors wearing through the paint on the fender, so I made a "hanger". I picked up a piece of acrylic and cut it longer than the base of the tour pack. I drilled 4 holes, for the screws which attach it to the mount, then cut some slots at the back to hang the wires from. Works well. Mine does not rattle. I added Custom Dynamics Fillerz lights so I had turn signals with the Tour Pack off. I had it off for a while and the bike felt quicker without it. I weighed it while it was off, its approximately 50 lbs. I put it back on for the convenience of stowing my helmet. I'm thinking about taking it off again. I just ordered a helmet lock today.  

I had one on my old bike. Only time I took the thing off was to clean the bike...... I bought the bike used, about 10 years old, not sure how long the tour pack had been on it. Year 5 for me I had to replace the bushings where the arms slid in to lock in place because they started to wiggle. I think they were less than $20 total, so no big deal at all.  

Have it and love it. Only time I use tour pak is when I have a passenger. Otherwise saddle bags alone provide sufficient storage for me.  

I pieced mine together rather than using the kit. Factor in a lower-profile seat to the total cost. Given how good the bike looks without it, and the easier handling, my TP will stay off unless I'm on a road trip. If I'm going to have a passenger for said trip, I might take an extra 10 minutes and bolt the thing back on.  

I also pieced mine together and rarely take it off. The only real advantage for me with the TP off, is being able to throw a leg over the seat rather than stepping over the seat. As others have stated, the TP is a convenience especially if you worry you helmet will get stolen.  

Love my tour pak for traveling with the wife. Never had problems with detachable on two bikes now. I hate the top heaviness with it attached but always carry a sissy bar netted on top to put on when I arrive if staying more than a couple of days.

I was going to install the Tour-Pac Extender and it looks like the simple instructions that applied to an Ultra don't apply. It looks like I can't reach the two back nuts holding the Tour-Pac to the Support Frame. It looks like I'll need to remove the six nuts, on the inside of the Trunk, that are holding the Support Frame. Disconnect the wiring plugs. Then I can remove the Tour-pak and add the extender between the Tour-Pak & the Support. Did I miss anything, or is there a surprise that I don't know about? Is there enough playin the wiring harnesses extend the Pac 3"? Thanks in advance for any advice.
