Often the first stop along Ethiopia's northern circuit, the lakeside town of Bahir Dar is your launchpad onto Lake Tana. Flamingos and hippos roam these waters, and ancient monasteries await discovery on the islands dotted around the lake.

Lake Tana at a glance

Lake Tana is the biggest lake in Ethiopia , accounting for a staggering 50% of all inland water in the country.

The flora and fauna found within its murky depths have led to Lake Tana's nomination as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

Surrounding the lake lies one of the largest networks of wetlands in Africa. These wetlands see huge annual bird migrations, and the lake itself has large populations of Great White Pelicans .

There are dozens of islands found on Lake Tana, and many are home to 14th Century monasteries complete with ancient ornaments, frescoes, and fascinating wall paintings.

Discover Ancient Monasteries on Lake Tana

Lake Tana is most famous for its ancient island monasteries .

Accessible via a short boat trip from the shores of the lake, these monasteries are a window into a bygone era, and stepping off the boat to explore these relics of history is like wandering into a land lost to time.

There are dozens of island monasteries, but only eight are open for public viewing. You can explore the monasteries over the course of a morning or afternoon .

Monasteries on Lake Tana in Bahir Dar

Monasteries of Lake Tana

Tana cherkos.

Tana Cherkos, nestled within a dark dense forest , is a small island temple that once held a much bigger secret behind its cold stone doors.

For over 800 years, it was thought that this temple was home to the Ark of the Covenant . The very place it was held can still be seen today.

Is it true? We would say that's beside the point. Facts of Ethiopian history are very often wrapped up in myth, legend, and folklore - but that's all part of the fun.

What is undeniable is the magic of the monasteries like Tana Cherkos. Spend just a few minutes here and your mind begins to get lost in curiosity - who built this church? How did they build it? What compelled them to paint these elaborate biblical stories from floor to ceiling? What was life like back when this monastery was built?

Narga Selassie

Narga Selassie is one of the more photogenic temples on Lake Tana. Narga Selassie translates to ‘Trinity of the Rest’, and was built on the peaceful Dek Island - the largest island on the lake.

The church is built in a picturesque clearing, and you can't help but feel a sense of calm as you wander the grounds.

It’s no wonder religious ascetics chose to build their place of worship on Dek islands.

Daga Estefanos

Perched 100m above Laka Tana, the mountain monastery Daga Estefanos offers some of the best views over Lake Tana and beyond.

A short trek up a narrow winding path from the shore, this monastery is one of the most decorated and celebrated , with a long history dating back to the 16th century.

Within its dusty vaults and crumbling catacombs lies the mummified remains of five former Ethiopian emperors , still adorned in brightly coloured ceremonial robes, silently guarded by a fresco of the Madonna affixed to the wall above the tombs.

A scene straight out of the next Indiana Jones film.

Unfortunately, only men are permitted within the wall of this monastery, but the view from the trail is not to be missed.

Ura Kidane Mehret

One of the bigger monasteries in the region, Ura Kidane Mehret is known for its beautifully painted, psychedelic murals that run the perimeter of its circular straw walls.

Just 25 minutes walk from the boat landing point, Ura Kidane Mehret is one of the more accessible churches in the region and is by far the most popular.

Concealed behind tall shady palm trees and densely planted coffee farms, the monastery houses vibrant frescoes depicting scenes from Ethiopian folklore and Christianity.

Both men and women are permitted entry and there is a small museum on-site, called the Zege Satekela Museum. Here you can learn about the hand-crafted tools and musical instruments that helped shape this vibrant land, and that are still in use today.

Bete Maryam Monastery

For those looking to get off the beaten track, the smaller Bete Maryam Monastery offers equally beautiful frescoes, but retains a certain charm and simplicity that's lost on the bigger, more popular monasteries.

Bete Maryam, meaning ‘the house of Mary’, is a 14th century, small and secluded temple that houses some the lakes most vibrant, bedazzling paintings.

Debre Maryam

Built in the 1800s by Emperor Tewodros, Debre Maryam is one of the newer monasteries of Lake Tana.

The monastery houses a series of sacred, ancient texts displayed within the confines of the church.

Although easily accessible via boat from the shores of the lake, more intrepid explorers can rent a papyrus reed boat, an ancient form of transport used for millennia, for a more authentic experience.

Azuwa Maryam Monastery

The round, thatched roof of the Azuwa Maryam Monastery along the Zege Peninsular makes this church one of the most aesthetically pleasing.

Like all the monasteries on the lake, inside you will find a series of spell binding frescoes sure to send a smile across the face of even the biggest miserabilists.

Bete Selassie and Tekla Haimanot

The Bete Selassie and Tekla Haimanot monasteries are the least visited monasteries of the bunch, but are no less interesting.

From the shores of the island, it's a 45-minute uphill walk to the monasteries. Inside, you'll find vivid, decorative frescoes.

Being slightly further away from the launch site at Bahir Dar, and a considerable walk from the shore means these monasteries get much less attention than the others. Most visitors explore the monasteries of Lake Tana in the morning, and then head to the Blue Nile Falls in the afternoon. This means there isn't enough time to explore all of the monasteries around the lake. If you are not visiting the falls, or are spending more than just a day or two in Bahir Dar, it's well worth taking the time to visit Bete Selassie and Tekla Haimanot.

Bahir Dar – Lake Tana

Lake Tana & Blue Nile Falls: Lake Tana, the largest lake in Ethiopia, situated north of the beautiful town of Bahir Dar is the source from where the famous Blue Nile River starts its long journey to Khartoum and to the Mediterranean via Egypt beautiful paintings.

Lake Tana Source of The majestic Blue Nile River

Around the shore and on the islands of Lake Tana, many monasteries have been flourished, with their own theological schools, which still exist, housing immense historical and cultural treasures adorned with beautiful paintings. Along the lakeshore bird life, both local and migratory visitors, make the site an ideal place for birdwatchers.

The Blue Nile River flows out of the lake with tremendous force and volume over the basalt shoulder of a giant cataract and onwards from there, ever downwards through dark and angry defiles towards the deserts of the Sudan, on its way to enrich Egypt’s fertile delta.

The Blue Nile River flows out of the lake. The power of the Blue Nile may best be appreciated just thirty kilometers downstream from the point where the river first leaves Lake Tana.

There, a thunder of sound fills the air and the green fields, and low hills on either bank tremble to the Blue Nile Falls. It is one of the most dramatic spectacles on either the White or Blue Niles, a vision of natural strength and grandeur.

Treasure of Lake Tana

Lake tana, pearl of ethiopia.

Lake Tana, Ethiopia’s largest, is home to 37 islands. Three of these islands have 45 monasteries and churches from various ages. Tana was designated a “global biosphere reserve” by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 2015 due to its potential biodiversity. Besides to its natural value and beauty, its mystery, historical and religious archives make it one of the main tourist spots. Tana, which is have been formed by a volcanic eruption about 25 million years ago. The lake has a surface area of 3600 square kilometres and is approximately 80 km long from north to south and 60 km wide from east to west. Average Its width is 3600 square kilometres and its depth is 9 meters. Tana, which is classified as a mountain lake due to its origin and height of 1830 meters above sea level, is a heart-shaped lake that is wider in the north and narrows in the south.

https://gishabayethiopiatour.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/Day-51-scaled.jpg

It was recognized as the copper-painted lake, by the 5th century BC tragedian Athenian, Aeschylus. Lake Tana, is referred to as the origin of Ethiopian history. Some scholars and religious leaders refer to it as the foundation of Cush civilization’s, the land of Jethro, the place of Torah sacrifice: the resting place of the Ark of Zion and the Virgin Mary, the site of hidden temples, and the choice of St. Yared as a holy lake chosen by spiritualists to fight and deliver God’s prayers. It is home to a plenty of birdlife, but the most notable feature of this lake is the abundance of churches and monasteries along its shores and on its islands. The monasteries were built by the kings of Ethiopia in the medieval period, which later became the most important religious and political hub of the country. Politically, the Lake Tana Island monasteries had played a significant role when the country experienced internal and external crises. These islands shelter some 21 monasteries surviving remnants of a very old meditative tradition. Most of the monasteries with some exceptions which dated back even to the 14th century AD were established in the medieval period by the monks locally referred as the Seven Stars. The monasteries also house myriads of treasures, beautiful mural paintings, icons, parchment manuscripts, scrolls and emperors’ assets.

Bahir Dar, is an excellent base for exploring the various monasteries that have been established ages ago, from the 13th to 174th Century onwards, on several of the islands in the lake, and on its edges. They are relatively simple structures, round, made of clay, wood and cow dung and some also seem to use brick pillars as supports, with a bamboo cover of the corridor that encircles the church, and large wooden doors. Kibran Gabriel founded in the 14th century and rebuilt in the17th is the closest monastery to Bahir Dar but only accessible by men visitors. The Zegie Peninsula is a popular tourist destination that is endowed with both spiritual and material resources as well as variety of diverse natural and cultural tourist attractions. This Peninsula is home to several churches and monasteries. Among these due to its proximity to Bahir Dar and acceptance of female visits, Ura Kidane Mihret, Azwa Mariam and Betre Mariam are the most visited monastery by tourists. Ura Kidane Mihret features a museum as well as some of Ethiopia’s greatest religious art. A full-day boat trip is necessary to visit the equally worthwhile but far Daga Istafanos, Tana Chirkos, or Narga Selassie. For instance, the most remarkable things found at churches and Monasteries include beautiful mural frescoes, icons, parchment manuscripts, scrolls, crosses, crowns and bequests of Emperors.

https://gishabayethiopiatour.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2P7A8942-scaled.jpg

Lake Tana supports remarkable biodiversity. The lake has more than 20 indigenous fish species. Walking distance from Bahir Dar, hippopotamuses are commonly spotted. The variety of birds includes large white pelican flotillas, colorful weavers and their tidy small nests, and African fish eagles that sing a melancholy duet in the treetops. Many of the lake’s monasteries function as virtual nature preserves thanks to the Ethiopian Orthodox Church’s environmentalist attitude, safeguarding a variety of woodland birds and primates.

Lake Tana & its Monasteries

Lake Tana’s beauty can only be truly appreciated when you get out beyond the city to enjoy azure waters, a lush shoreline and rich birdlife. But even the lake's natural beauty plays second fiddle to its centuries-old monasteries, full of paintings and treasures, and some pretty impressive numbers: Tana is Ethiopia’s largest lake, covering more than 3500 sq km, and its waters are the source of the Blue Nile, which flows 5223km north to the Mediterranean Sea.

Tana is the largest lake in Ethiopia; with a surface area of 3500km2, and it is also the source of the Blue Nile River and the 39 islands makes Lake Tana the most breathtaking site in Ethiopia.

Debre Maryam

Debre Maryam monastery was founded by Abuna Tselalesh near the Nile outlet in the 14th century during the reign of Amde Tsion (1315-1345). Debre Mariam Island is the ideal place watching wetland and forest birds and majestic hippopotamus.

Kibran Gabriel and Entos Iysus

Kibran Gabriel was founded in the 14th century during the reign of Amde Tsion and rebuilt during the reign of Emperor Iyasu I (1682-1706). Its lies on a tiny, forested crescent- presumably part of the rim of an extinct volcano. Near Kibran Gabriel, there is Entos Iyesus Monastery. Both Kibran Gebriel and Entos have served for long years as monasteries dedicated only for monks and nuns respectively. Kibran Gabriel boasts no paintings, but it houses the largest library (musem) of ancient books of any church in the region –almost 200 volumes in total including a beautiful illustrated 15th century Life of Christ.

Korata Wolete Petros monastery

The most populous and important port on Lake Tana for much of the Gondarine period, Korata was also once the most beautiful city in Ethiopia in ancient time, according to Guglielmo Lejean, a French explorer who visited Korata in 1862. Korata is situated on a forested peninsula located eastern shore about 20km northeast of present-day Bahir Dar. The town supported more than 15,000 people in its prime, but it fell into decline towards the end of the 19th century, and was reduced to little more than a ghost town following a murderous attack by the Italian occupiers in 1936. The most significant relict of the old town is a church dedicated to Wolete Petros, a nun of aristocratic birth who suffered immense persecution during the reign of the Catholic converts Emperor Susenyos due to her outspoken refusal to convert, and is now one of the few female saints recognised by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. The original church, by all accounts one of the most beautiful in Ethiopia, was destroyed by an Italian hand grenade, but its replacement, built in the 1940s, houses several treasures including an armoured dress reputedly worn by Wolete Petros prior to her death on Rema Island in 1643, and a tapestry donated by Tewodros II.

Zaghie Peninsula

Ever green forested Zeghe peninsula is a home of 7 historical monasteries. URA Kidane Mihret church. Ura Kidane Mihret ranks not only as the most impressive of the southern monasteries, but also possibly the most beautiful church anywhere in Tana region. This monastery was founded in the 14th century by a saint called Aba yohhanes and the present church was built in the 16th century. In the peninsula, there are other monasteries such as Azwa Maryam, Mahilzegie Giorgis (Betre Maryam and Yiganda Tekele Haymanot.

Tana Chirkos

Tana Chirkos, the oldest monastery in Ethiopia, is situated to the eastern shore of Lake Tana where one can observe life and rituals that have hardly been changed since the Old Testament. This monastery had been used as one of the four places of ancient Judaic worship where sacrificial stones are still found. This scarifying stone testifies to the island’s importance as a Judaic religious shrine in pre-Christian times. It is believed that the Ark of the Covenant had been kept for 800 years before it was taken to Aksum. The founder of Ethiopian church music, St. Yared has written his first book of song called Degua at this monastery

Kiristos Semira monastery

Separated from Tana Cherkos Monastery by River Gumara, a tributary to Lake Tana, the Monastery of Kiristos Semira is a religious place given a special prestige by its believers. The church is situated on a hill called Guangut which is found at the edge of Lake Tana and beautified by different species of plants and songs of birds. The hill on which the monastery lies is a natural tower that allows a perfect view of the magnificent stretch of Lake Tana from the front, Daga Estifanos, Mitsly Fasiledes and Rema Medhane Alem monasteries from a little farther and Tana Cherkos from the boarder. This monastery which is said to have got its present shape in the 14th century during the reign of Emperor Dawit has been rebuilt at different times.

Daga Istafanos monastery

Daga Istafanos lies on a small wedge-shaped island immediately east of the much larger Dek Island. Daga was founded in the late 13th century by Hiruta Amlak during the reign of Emperor Yekuno Amlak. The main point of interest at Daga Istafanos today is the mausoleum, which contains mummified remains of at least five Ethiopian medieval Emperors namely Yikuno Amlak, Dawit I, Zara Yakob, Susneyos and Emperor Fasilidas.

Narga Selassie monastery

The monastery of Narga Selassie is situated on the western shore of Dek island. It was founded by Empress Mintewab in the 18th century. Its architectural style has resemblance with the buildings of Gonder. Narga is the most ornately decorated of all the lake monasteries. As with Ura Kidane Mihrte, the inner walls are covered from top to bottom with a riotous and absorbing collection of paintings, most thought to date from the 18th century.

Meet our representative/guide at the lobby of your hotel or anywhere in town. The guide will give you highlight information about your boat trip then together take one of our comfortable boats to the scheduled church/ monasteries afterwards return back to Bahir Dar.

Lake Tana Monastery Tour In Ethiopia

  • by Jonny Duncan
  • January 14, 2019 September 27, 2022

The monasteries scattered on the islands and peninsulas of Lake Tana in Ethiopia  are shrouded in history. Most are accessible only by boat and date back centuries to medieval times.

Hidden in their treasuries for safety were old manuscripts and church objects, as well as the remains of ancient Ethiopian Emperors.

One such object alleged to have been stored there is the Ark of the Covenant. Ethiopia has a long history of Christianity and these monasteries play a very important part.

Lake Tana Monasteries Tour

monastery-lake-tana-ethiopia

The monasteries are traditionally built in the old style and have three areas.

The inner sanctuary where only priests are allowed, and the inner and outer areas where worshippers gather.

Inside are paintings and art dating back centuries, making for a colourful display.

With the smell of incense and the darkly lit interior one can be sent back to old mystical times.

inside-monastery-lake-tana

These days the monasteries are still used for worship by the local people, but are naturally an interesting excursion for tourists.

The nearest city of Bahir Dar on the south of the lake is the staging post to rent boats to reach the islands.

church-lake-tana

You have the option to go just for a half day trip to visit around three or so monasteries, or a for a full day where more of the outer islands can be reached.

Although to see all the monasteries on Lake Tana you would need a few days at least.

You will most likely see people using traditional boats out fishing or transporting goods while on the lake.

church-lake-tana-ethiopia

Upon arrival you will be greeted by locals selling traditional handicrafts, as well as other trinkets.

They have makeshift wooden stalls lining the paths leading to the monasteries.

Thankfully they are not very pushy and will leave you alone if you say you are not interested. Some would say that this selling takes away some of the atmosphere.

ethiopian-man-lake-tana

But if you were from a poor village and had something like this in your backyard it is only natural to try and support your family with the selling of souvenirs.

And the people are friendly and the children cheeky as always. At the monastery itself a guide will show you around, and you will most likely see a priest.

priest-lake-tana-ethiopia

The guides are normally included in the price of a boat trip for a Lake Tana Monasteries tour, and are very useful to gain a proper insight into the history.

They are often students taking a break from studies to work for a while and are very knowledgeable, most having come from the area.

They will explain all the different meanings of the intricate art adorning the walls inside.

The art is mostly painted onto cloth, and most are very old and date back centuries.

You could almost imagine secret treasures still buried inside the walls, hidden away waiting to be discovered.

monastery-murals-lake-tana-ethiopia

For history lovers the monasteries are a must see in Ethiopia. But for others they are still definitely worth a visit to gain more understanding of Ethiopian culture.

Although some may become a bit bored after having seen a few of them as they can be very similar.

As well as the monasteries themselves there are some small museums. Museums being used in the loosest term, as most consist of a small locked room with some old artifacts and scriptures.

After being showed around its good to just sit for a while inside the outer area.

Here you can enjoy some peace and contemplate one of the great treasures of Ethiopia, before heading back on the boat to busy Bahir Dar.

How to Visit The Lake Tana Monasteries

The price for a half day Lake Tana Monastery tour with a group should cost around 150 Ethiopian birr per person.

If you are alone do not worry as you will most likely be put in with an existing group.

There is no fixed rate for the tours so make sure to bargain for a good price.

Access to the monasteries themselves will cost extra, at 100 birr per monastery.

A fast bus from Addis Ababa to Bahir Dar takes around 10 hours, or there are daily flights. If you come in rainy season wear good shoes, as it can be slippy and muddy on the paths.

The Blue Nile Falls can also be done on a day trip from Bahir Dar.

I recommend using SafetyWing Travel Insurance for your trip, just in case, it’s best to be prepared.

  • Monastery Islands of Lake Tana

Lake Tana is the largest lake in Ethiopia, measuring around 3,700 square kilometres. It has approximately three-dozen islands that have been important monastic sites for centuries and are still inhabited by monks and nuns. Beautiful, ancient convents lie hidden in the wooded island’s undergrowth featuring fantastic historical paintings and impressive church treasures. Wild legends flow throughout Lake Tana. The remoteness of the islands made them ideal havens during turbulent times as well as places of exile for those who were condemned. The sacred biblical Arc of the Covenant is said to have been brought here to safety twice – in the first incident, it was kept on the island of Tana Chirkos for 800 years!

The Kibran Gabriel Church * The first monasteries were already built in the 14 th century, including the monastery Kibran Gabriel, which lies on an island closest to the town of Bahir Dar. Kibran Gabriel has a large library of nearly 200 historical documents, including a highly valuable and beautifully illuminated manuscript from the 15 th century. However, women are denied access to this island – including even female animals!

The Ura Kidane Mihret Church *  This church is open to women and is thought to be among the finest in the region, situated on the Zege peninsula. A narrow path leads from the pier through the tangled jungle to the protected church. The site was established in the 14 th century and the current buildings date back to the 16 th century.

The round Ura Kidane Mihret church has a straw-thatched roof that follows the classic structure of the churches of the region. The building itself is surrounded by an outside path, which is covered with bamboo mats providing a translucent screen to the outside. Huge wooden doors lead inside the church, which lies in semi-darkness, illuminated only by the doorways. The entrance leads around a shrine several metres long and with a drum, which lies in the centre of the room. Fantastical Bible illustrations adorn the shrine from top to bottom. Tapestries full of colour cover this holy sanctum, portraying scenes from the life of Christ, events from the Old Testament, and local legends. Another large, painted door leads to the shrine where the holy Tabot (a copy of Tablets of Law from the Old Testament) is preserved within the church.

Dek Island * This is the largest island on Lake Tana. Located almost in the centre of the lake, a trip to this island can take a full day or more. In total, four churches can be found around Dek Island. Most interesting however, is the monastery church Narga Selassie, located on a small island to the west of Dek. The Gonder Empress Mentewab built the church in 1746 and its paintings are among the most beautiful and best preserved of the second Gonder style.

The Church of Daga Istafanos *  This island monastery, which lies just east of Dek island poses another curiosity: 18 emperors are said to have been buried here. The mummified remains of five are laid out in glass coffins. Among them is Emperor Fasilidas, whose crown and trumpets can be admired in the treasury. This island is also inhabited by monks and women are not permitted access.

For today’s travellers, Lake Tana offers more than just an excursion deep into the past of Orthodox Ethiopia. The idyllic islands, with their pristine, densely covered tropical forests are like lush gardens of paradise in an enchanted lake. Parrots squawk, colourful butterflies flutter about, and in some places you can even spot pelicans and hippos

Light boats made of papyrus called Takwa carry locals between the mainland and the islands. Goods are transported from one point to another and the scene is reminiscent of ancient Egypt. In this way, the Tana Lake region has always stayed connected with Egypt via the Blue Nile, which rises at the southern tip of the lake. Just a few kilometres further, the water plunges into the famous Blue Nile Falls at a height of over 45 metres.

Accommodation: There are several hotels and resorts, some with beautiful gardens, directly overlooking the lake. Cheaper hotels can be found in the city.

Lake Tana: The African Wonder with 37 Floating Islands

lake tana tour

traveller Budget Wayfarers

Lake Tana is classified as the largest lake in the African nation of Ethiopia and is the source of the mighty Blue Nile. It is about 95 kilometres long and spans an area of 3,500 square kilometres.

Although Ethiopia is landlocked, the presence of this lake makes up for it. A boat ride across Lake Tana is a must for anybody who decides to visit Ethiopia.

In addition to the world-famous Blue Nile Falls meandering out of the lake, this large water reservoir supports a host of ecosystems. Spend a day here, and learn about its flora and fauna, its centuries-old monasteries, and its culturally significant islands.

Lake Tana

A number of travelers are of the assumption that the Blue Nile Falls are the only attraction of Lake Tana. But, that is incorrect. There are 37 islands on the surface of Ethiopia’s largest water body, and they’re of oozing historical, social, and cultural significance.

Lake Tana Ethiopia: An Overview

Overall, Lake Tana is a really easy place to get to and explore. However, no matter how much you like spontaneity and going with the flow, having a basic idea of the place always helps a great deal. In this section, I will give you a sneak peek into my experience at the Ethiopian Lake. Before we dive into the nitty-gritty, let me give you a brief overview that will assure you of a smooth trip.

I was surprised to find out that a place so beautiful is not more popular among travelers. Read on, and you’ll understand why I’m talking about this place so highly.

Lake Tana is dotted with islands, monasteries, churches, fishermen, and spectacular views. Leaving this place without venturing out on a boat ride would almost make your trip abstruse.

The Islands on Lake Tana

Lake Tana is home to about 37 islands that are storehouses of cultural and historical significance. Some of the popular islands are:

The islands are said to be home to about 15,000-20,000 inhabitants. About 20 of them are widely visited by travelers and locals for its churches and monasteries. Imagine visiting a monastery on an island in the midst of an Ethiopian lake – it’s truly a wonder.

In addition to these utopian islands, the peninsulas of Gorgora, Mandaba, and Zege are also must-visits. They’re reputed for their delicious coffee, and attract birdwatchers, photographers, historians, and curious travelers from far and wide.

Visiting The Zege Peninsula

Located on the southern side of Lake Tana, the Zege Peninsula is home to some ancient but ravishing monasteries. Also, the region has a thick lush forest you can take long walks in, and a hill that you climb up for some spectacular views.

Bete Maryam Monastery

Finding itself at the tip of the peninsula, this monastery is the oldest on Zege. Here, you can marvel at some spectacular murals that depict Ethiopian life, religion, culture and folklore. ‘Bete Maryam’ literally translates to House of Mary and is a really colourful place to be in. These murals have been through a lot – water damage, replacements, and corrosion, but are ever-striking when it comes to their vibrancy.

Fact: The colours used for these murals are organic, meaning, they were derived from local produce such as plants, flowers, and vegetation.

Ura Kidane Mehret

Open to women visitors, this monastery is hardly attractive on the outside. However, once you take your footwear off and step inside, you’ll be left amused. It’s almost like being transported to a completely different world.

It is a 20-minute walk from where the boat will drop you, and the pathway is rather interesting. You’d be walking through coffee plantations, lemon trees, and some souvenir stalls trying their best to sell some goodies to you.

Tip: If you visit around February and March, you could witness the coffee harvest in full force.

It also houses a little museum that goes by the name of Zege Satekela. It has a collection of household equipment, handcrafted objects and musical instruments used by local Ethiopian communities.

Bette Selassie Monastery

If you’re energetic and enthusiastic enough, climb up the hill in Zege and visit the Bette Selassie Monastery. It takes about 45 minutes to reach and has a spectacular range of paintings. Unfortunately, it is only open to men.

Furthermore, you can also visit the Azuwa Maryam church and the Bete Selassie and Tekla Haimanot monastery at Zege.

Other Monasteries and Churches Worth Visiting

The scattered islands and peninsulas of Lake Tana collectively house more than twenty monastic churches. Following are some of the most renowned Lake Tana monasteries and churches.

Debre Maryam

Although originally built in the 14 th century, this church was redone in the 19 th century. A number of people find this site to be unattractive and uninteresting, but the thing is, it is much more than its looks. It is popular for its priceless collection of books, artefacts, and paintings weaved around the stories of Mary and Jesus.

Furthermore, if you’re lucky, you’ll stumble across locals making tankwas (traditional Ethiopian reed boats made from papyrus) on this island.

Kebran Gabriel

This is the monastery closest to the town of Bahir Dar, and one of the most frequented.

The island is heavily vegetated, and there are high chances that you won’t be able to spot the monastery at first. However, a steep and muddy walk on the island will lead you to the monastery that emerges almost suddenly.

Daga Estefanos

This is a relatively new monastery, and a short trek up a hill opens up to it. What’s cool, interesting, and rather spooky is what this monastery houses. In its treasury, lies the mummified remains of a number of former Ethiopian emperors.

Unfortunately, just like Kebran Gabriel, this monastery permits only men.

Tana Cherkos

This is a small island monastery, and rather far from Bahir Dar. It takes roughly 2.5-3 hours to get here by boat and is a 30-minute uphill walk from the landing point. Its shores are covered with a forest strip that is habituated by majestic fish eagles.

All of the above-mentioned monasteries, along with many more serve as the custodians of both religious and royal treasures. If you’re keen on knowing more about the cultural facets of the region, these are a must visit.

The Region’s Protected Flora and Fauna

Lake Tana is a blessing to Ethiopia in terms of the ecosystems it supports and its contributions to the economy. The Lake Tana biological reserve has been established to protect this sensitive and valuable biological diversity.

While you’re cruising away on the calm lake, keep your eyes open for wildlife, plants, and the most exotic birds you can think of.

Exotic W ildlife

Lake Tana is a bonanza for wildlife lovers. Unfortunately, in the pursuit of exploring the churches, monasteries, and islands on Lake Tana, many side-line this.

The long Nile Monitors are also inhabitants of these forests. Other animals easily observable in the region are hyenas, prickly Crested Porcupine and Duikers.

Furthermore, Lake Tana’s biological reserve has a fair share of reptiles, snakes, porcupines, and other rare animals you might not even know exist.

Wildlife in Lake Tana

Hippos have lived in the waters of Lake Tana forever now. A number of tourists make their way to this part of the lake simply to spot some of these semi-aquatic animals. Although they generally venture out at night, if you’re lucky, you might see them in the daytime.

Fish – Endemic and Endangered

Under the surface of the very lake that your boat will make its way on, are about 28 thriving species of fish. A majority of them are endemic (native, belonging to a particular region), with a few being endangered.

Plants – Of Coffee and Medicines

All of the islands on Lake Tana are characterized by dense patches of trees, plants, and vegetation.

You’ll find yourself exposed to a wide variety of endemic, endangered and rare vegetation on the Zege peninsula. As mentioned before, coffee plants with bead-like cherries can be found in abundance here. These very cherries are then utilized to make the country’s national drink buna, also known as coffee.

It has also been discovered that a number of plants in this region have excellent medicinal properties. They are used to cure fevers, coughs, colds, and even more severe illnesses.

The wetlands of this region have been highly inducive to the thriving wildlife, and plant population.

Ethiopians have gone a long way in protecting this sensitive, and rich biodiversity. So, when you visit Lake Tana, make sure you’re considerate, cooperative and careful about not harming what’s been protected ever since.

How Much Would the Experience Cost?

Now, this is a little tricky. How much you’ll pay for a boat ride on Lake Tana depends on a number of factors. Some of them are:

Keeping all these things in mind, it is difficult to offer any approximation on the pricing structure for boat trips on Lake Tana. However, small lake trips would roughly cost about 1000 birr (34.5 USD) for a group of 4-5 people. Full-day trips would set you back 3000-3500 birr (102.5-120 USD).

Public Boat

If you’re on a tighter budget, you could consider taking the public boat. This boat leaves to go to the Zege Peninsula from the Marine Authority (ask any local for directions) at 7AM every day. From the peninsula, it proceeds to go to the village of Afaf.

You can explore the peninsula on foot, and eventually walk 40 minutes to get to Afaf. Hereon, you can get an evening boat back to Bahir Dar or hop on to a minibus. The last bus leaves around 4 PM.

Note that none of these prices include food, entrance fees, and other expenses. Clarify if the package includes a guide before settling on a deal. Tip: Do not go on this trip without a guide. Even if you have to shell out some more bucks for one, do it. Otherwise, it’s going to be absolutely worthless.

Entrance fees to the monasteries are 100 birr (3.4 USD) per person (per monastery).

Travelers can visit the islands on Lake Tana and peninsulas by hiring a boat from either of the following –

  • Port of Bahir Dar – The southern shore of Lake Tana
  • Port of Gorgora – The northern shore of Lake Tana

Lastly, as a rule, always bargain. Since there is no fixed price for the boat rides, operators do not hesitate to pitch random quotes. This is especially true if you’re a foreigner, and even more so, if you seem oblivious and uninformed.

Are the Islands of Lake Tana Prohibited for Women?

By this point of the article, you must be aware that a lot of these monasteries are prohibited for women due to religious reasons. Although they are allowed to land on the banks of the islands, they aren’t allowed to continue further.

However, women travelers can visit some churches on the Zege peninsula, in addition to a few others. So, before making any plan, do get a confirmation on this. If you are a woman, sign up for packages that will take you to monasteries you are allowed to enter.

The Blue Nile Falls

Locally known as Tis Abay, the Blue Nile Falls are one of the country’s top natural attractions. These falls mix up with the White Nile in Sudan, thus forming the (disputed) longest river in the world.

If you want, you can also visit the nearby Wonkshet monastery.

When to go to Lake Tana?

There’s no unfavourable time to visit Lake Tana as such. Ethiopia boasts of bright sunshine throughout the year. Even during the monsoons, it isn’t difficult for one to visit the country and be treated to all it has to offer.

Monsoons in this region roughly last from mid-May to September. So, if there had to be the best time to visit Lake Tana, it would certainly be October. This is when the lake is full, the vegetation is lush and green, and even the Blue Nile falls are at their best.

Temperatures do not vary much throughout the year. However, during the course of a day, there can be a significant drop in temperatures as night falls. They can drop to as low as 9°C in the winter months and can go up to as much as 30°C around April and May.

Fact: Ethiopia makes use of the Julian calendar instead of the Gregorian one.

Ethiopia’s Largest Lake: Backpack  Essentials

Although there aren’t any strict rules that govern dress codes when at Lake Tana, it’s better to dress conservatively. Additionally, make sure you’re wearing clothes that are comfortable for spending long hours in, and for hiking, walking, etc.

Keeping everything in mind, the following is a comprehensive list that will guide you while packing for your trip to this land.

Note that it is advised for you to not swim in Lake Tana. The waters are home to a number of creatures that might make your swim unpleasant. Additionally, the reeds will most certainly come your way.

However, you might be allowed to swim in the Blue Nile Falls if it isn’t during or right after the monsoon season. It really depends on the water levels and the force of the falls. In any case, if you’re fond of swimming, do carry your swimwear.

However, exercise complete caution and only take the plunge if it feels completely safe.

Lodging and Boarding

Usually, travelers stay in hotels in Bahir Dar City, at the edge of Lake Tana. Bahir Dar is a beautiful and clean city. Here, you can find a number of budget hotels, hostels, and guesthouses.

Most of them will be able to help you out with arranging boat tours, or trips to the Blue Nile Falls. Budget options for stay are:

  • Manuhie Backpackers Lodge (325 birr/11.12 USD per person per night)

This is a great option for solo travelers, since dormitories are available. It’s pleasant, cheap, and well-located. The owners are said to be really hospitable and helpful.

  • Flamingo guest house (410 birr/14 USD per night for a twin room)

This is a great choice for couples and families. It comes with great Wi-Fi, and great service, and is in close proximity to the city’s popular attractions.

Bahir Dar is pretty used to hosting visitors and travelers from far and wide. In this light, a number of options for stay are flocking up. From cheap options for accommodation to luxury hotels, Bahir Dar has something to offer to everybody.

How to Reach Lake Tana Biodiversity Reserve?

Located in the Amhara region, Lake Tana is located about 600 kilometers northwest of the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa. Commuting in Ethiopia is generally not too difficult, and also not expensive.

From Addis Ababa to Bahir Dar

To explore Lake Tana, you’ll have to make your way to Bahir Dar – a port on its southern shore. There are 2 ways of doing this:

As for advice, I would suggest you take the bus. The scenery along the way is absolutely gorgeous, and you get a real feel of Ethiopian landscapes and Ethiopian life.

Tip: If you find bus rides to be uncomfortable, consider booking 2 seats. This would still be cheaper and better than boarding a flight.

Guided Tours to Lake Tana

Because it gets really expensive for one to go for a boat tour alone, there are a number of operators and companies that offer guided tours here. All you need to do is sign up, pay, and rest everything will be taken care of.

There are various types of tours you could choose from. Some include just the boat tour, some include a trip to the Blue Nile falls, and so on.

Simply search on Google to find relevant tours, or ask around at your place of stay in Bahir Dar. Most of them should be able to guide you with it.

Lake Tana is a place where ancient culture meets the modern era. Brimming with secrecy and legends, the old churches of Lake Tana are quiet retreats for their monastic inhabitants and inquisitive travelers alike. Plan a trip to this African paradise soon and experience the antiquity.

lake tana tour

Lake Tana, the largest lake, in Ethiopia is the source and from where the famed Blue Nile starts its long journey to Khartoum, and on to the Mediterranean. The 37 islands that are scattered about the surface of the lake shelter fascinating churches and monasteries, some of which have histories dating back to the 13th century. However, it should be noted that most of the religious houses are not open to women. The most interesting islands are: Birgida Mariam, Dega Estephanos, Dek, Narga, Tana Cherkos, Mitsele Fasiladas, Kebran and Debre Mariam.

Kebran Gabriel is the principal monastery visited by male tourists, with its impressive cathedral – like building first build at the end of the 17th century. Dega Estephanos, which is also closed to women, is on an island in the lake, and the monastery is reached by a very steep and winding path. Although the church is relatively new (only hundred years old), it houses a Madonna painted in the 15th century. However, the treasury of the Monastery is a prime attraction, with the remains of several Emperors, as well as their robes and jewels.

On the peninsula Zegay are many more monasteries, such as Ura Kidane Mehret and Azwa Mariam, many of which are also open to be visited by women.

Near Gorgora, at the northern end of the lake, the Susneyos palace is a forerunner of the magnificent palaces and castles of Gonder, and dates from the reign of Emperor Susneyos. In the same area the medieval church of Debre Sina Mariam is particularly important.

A sail or cruise on Lake Tana is one of the most pleasant excursions for visitors to this region, particularly in the heart of the summer. Along the lakeshore bird life, both local and migratory visitors, make this an ideal place for birdwatchers.

Bird lovers will not want to miss Fasiladas Island, which is especially famous as an important wetland. The whole of the Lake Tana region and the Blue Nile Gorge have a wide variety of birds both endemic and visitors. The variety of habitats, from rocky crags to riverain forests and important wetlands, ensure that many other different species should be spotted.

lake tana tour

The area around Lake Tana has a rich history that stretches back over many centuries, through ancient empires and dynasties. History, legends and beliefs passed down over the years form an important part of the Ethiopian’ identity and continue to shape the culture today.

Lake Tana has been the political and spiritual centre of the Ethiopian Christian faith for many centuries. References to the Blue Nile can be found in the Old Testament of the Bible as the River Gihon, which “flows around the whole land of Cush” (as Ethiopia was known to the Hebrews).

Bio-Diversity

The Lake Tana region has a high level of biological diversity and is considered part of two biodiversity hotspots: the Eastern Afromontane Hotspot and Horn of Africa Hotspot. Its invaluable ecosystems and habitats are of local and international significance.

Lake Tana also is well known for its unique concentration of endemic fish species due to the lake’s isolation from other water bodies separated by the Tis Issat falls. Approximately 70% of the 67 different fish species recorded in Lake Tana are endemic and the lake is home to the only remaining intact flock of Barbus fish in the world. Hippopotamuses, and reptiles like the Nile Crocodile and Nile Monitor also populate the lake and its surrounding areas. Papyrus, one of the characteristic features of Lake Tana, grows along the lake’s shoreline.

  • Day 1 - Lake Tana
  • Day 2 - Outlet of the Blue Nile
  • Day 3 - Tana Cherkos

Lake Tana and its surrounding areas are situated in the Amhara National Regional State in the north west of Ethiopia. The Regional State's capital city Bahir-Dar is located on the southern shores of the lake. Approximately 84 kilometres in length and 66 kilometres wide, Lake Tana is Ethiopia's largest lake and, at an elevation of 1840 meters above sea level, it is also the highest lake in Africa. It was formed by volcanic activity around 5 million years ago.

The Blue Nile outlet

The Blue Nile outlet, a 20-minute boat ride east of Bahir Dar, has far greater geographical significance than it does natural beauty, although there's plenty of birdlife and you might see the odd hippo. From here, the Blue Nile snakes its way, eventually tracking north and 5223km to the Mediterranean; it joins the White Nile in Khartoum, Sudan. Although you can organize a dedicated boat excursion here, most visitors come as part of a boat trip that takes in nearby monasteries.

Tana Cherkos

It’s said the Ark of the Covenant was hidden at Tana Cherkos for 800 years, which would seem to indicate it’s an interesting destination, but the present 19th-century church and its modern paintings are rather modest. Its unique feature is its ancient Judaic sacrificial stones. Tana Cherkos is 2½ hours from Bahir Dar by boat. From the landing it’s a 30-minute walk uphill.
