Kangaroo Island emotional reunion with Princess Cruises

princess cruises kangaroo island

Kangaroo Island will today welcome its first cruise ship in more than two and a half years, sharing a special connection with both the valuable sector of the visitor economy and the visiting cruise line.

Princess Cruises was the first cruise line to visit the island following the devastating bushfires in January 2020, with a special visit by the Sun Princess “in a show of support for the local community”.

Many guests of that voyage made donations to South Australia’s bushfire relief and Princess Cruises directed revenue from the day’s shore excursions to the state’s bushfire appeal. The visit was also hoped to help send a message to the world that Kangaroo Island was ‘open for business’.

Today’s arrival of the Coral Princess is one of a record-breaking number of visits scheduled for South Australia in 2022/23 – including 32 visits to Penneshaw – and the beginning of a restart of a once $145 million sector of the state’s visitor economy.

With almost 2,000 passengers and 895 crew, the Coral Princess will return to Penneshaw on another itinerary in April 2023, while other Princess ships are also scheduled for Penneshaw this season through as far ahead as April 2024. This includes one of the biggest ships to visit Kangaroo Island, the Majestic Princess, which carries up to 3,560 passengers and 1,346 crew.

Other cruise ships scheduled for Kangaroo Island this season (September 2022 to April 2023) include P&O’s Pacific Explorer with up to 1,998 passengers and 924 crew, Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth with up to 2,081 passengers and 980 crew; and Holland America’s Westerdam carrying up to 1,964 passengers and 800 crew.

The South Australian Tourism Commission has been working with industry, SA Health, and regional stakeholders in preparation for the restart of cruising in South Australia. This included partnering with the Australian Cruise Association (ACA), Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) and Carnival Australia to deliver a series of practical workshops in July across the state, including Adelaide, Kangaroo Island and Port Lincoln.

Minister for Tourism Zoe Bettison said it was terrific news for Kangaroo Island to see the return of international cruise which means a lot to so many small businesses and to community morale.

“Prior to the pandemic, cruise contributed $20 million to Kangaroo Island’s visitor economy, and that first visit after the bushfires was a real spirit lifter for the region,” Minister Bettison said.

“After a difficult two and a half years, cruising is back in Kangaroo Island and this season will bring tens of thousands of visitors to the region, who will spend with local vendors at the Penneshaw Markets and take onshore tours from Flinders Chase National Park and Seal Bay to Kingscote and Cape Willoughby.”

Princess Cruises Senior Vice President Asia Pacific, UK + Europe, Stuart Allison said today’s call was the first of 13 calls Princess ships will make to Kangaroo Island between September 2022 through to April 2024.

“It is an honour for Coral Princess to be the first cruise ship to return to Kangaroo Island following the pause in operations,” Mr Allison said.

“We’re proud of our special and personal bond with Kangaroo Island which was solidified when we brought the first ship to the island following the devastating bushfires in 2020. The local community welcomed us with open arms then, as they have done again today.

“Today we’ll see almost 2,000 guests explore the island with a number participating in pre-purchased shore excursions supporting local tour operators in addition to visiting cafes and hospitality businesses across the island. Kangaroo Island remains a key bucket list destination for our guests, with many guests sailing here from New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, and the United States.

“I’d like to thank Kangaroo Island’s tourism sector for the warmth of the welcome for Coral Princess’s guests and their efforts to make the first cruise ship call a resounding success.

“We are pleased that with today’s visit Coral Princess has sent a message that Kangaroo Island is open for cruise tourism once again.”

Kangaroo Island Ocean Safari owner Tony Coppins said the island was “very excited to welcome cruise ships back”.

With a range of half-day and full-day tours booked by ship passengers on Monday, Mr Coppins said visitors would be exploring and experiencing the best of Kangaroo Island, and the return of cruise ships provides an encouraging step forward in the recovery process for the tourism industry.

“There are really positive ongoing effects of the cruise ships returning, and they are felt right across the island,” he said.

“We’ve got nine buses out on Monday, doing a variety of tours. The cruise sector not only creates employment on the island but provides more opportunities for tourism operators and is an integral part of driving income for many local businesses.”

Mr Coppins said tours on Monday included visits to Seal Bay, Cape Willoughby Lighthouse, Flinders Chase National Park, and Kingscote, as well as local family businesses such as Island Beehive, Emu Bay Lavender Farm, Raptor Domain, Emu Ridge Eucalyptus Distillery, Vivonne Bay Store, Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, Kangaroo Island Ocean Safari, and Dudley Wines.

Chair of the Kangaroo Island Tourism Alliance, Susi Whitehead said the return of cruise ships to Kangaroo Island was “vitally important” to the visitor economy, especially the tour and transport sector which has been hit hard in the past two years.

“Confidence is building, the Island is ready to welcome cruising back and provide those visitors with our exceptional hospitality,” she said.

Sample Itinerary

Mid-afternoon the PS Murray Princess departs historic Mannum, the birthplace of the Murray River trade and communication, and heads upriver while you enjoy a Welcome Dinner.

As we cruise under floodlight to our overnight mooring at Caurnamont, you may see nocturnal wildlife on the riverbank. Watch for kangaroos, hairy-nosed wombats, tortoises, egrets, and many other species. Our onboard entertainer provides music for the night owls.

Daybreak and it’s time for the keen photographers to be out to capture the special light and the morning movement of wildlife. Prolific birdlife includes pelicans, wrens, and swans.

Enjoy a leisurely morning and lunch cruising upriver to Blanchetown through one of 13 locks that maintain the flow and levels of water.

This afternoon we moor opposite the township of Blanchetown for our overnight anchorage. As the last rays of the sun fade, we visit Burk Salter Boutique Winery and enjoy wine tasting at the cellar door which is fitted out with beautiful red gum bars.

After breakfast cruise downriver to picturesque Swan Reach. The town was first settled in the 1850s and was originally the largest of five sheep and cattle stations in the area and is now home to native flower and fruit growers. The original Swan Reach homestead is now the Swan Reach Hotel where you can enjoy an ale or cappuccino overlooking the Murray River (own expense). Join a walking tour and visit the Swan Reach Museum (gold coin donation at entry). Cruise downriver after lunch and take in the tranquillity as the landscape slides by. Catch up with friends over a coffee or drink whilst enjoying the magnificent scenery.

When we arrive at Sunnydale, it’s all ashore for the Woolshed Show as we recreate typical Australian woolshed history. Later we visit the Native Wildlife Shelter where some of South Australia’s most interesting native animals are cared for. And then of course, there is the great Aussie Barbecue – cooked and served in a bush setting on the banks of the mighty Murray River.

An optional Nocturnal Tour (additional cost) in a comfortable purpose-built cart is available after dinner where you may see kangaroos, wombats, foxes, bats, and owls by powerful spotlights. Special stops along the way are included to view the spectacular night sky which is part of the River Murray International Dark Sky Reserve.

After an optional Bush Tucker Breakfast (additional cost) or a bush walk with the Captain, we slowly cruise downriver past magnificent cliffs scoured by the river over millions of years. We reach Ngaut Ngaut Aboriginal Reserve, one of Australia’s most significant archaeological sites, for a step back in time – tens of thousands of years – for a guided boardwalk tour to view ancient rock carvings and to learn about aboriginal history in the area.

We return to the vessel to cruise downriver to Younghusband. Along the way, adventure seekers can also take a scenic tender boat ride.

Tonight, join your fellow passengers for a delicious dinner in the Sturt Dining Room followed by an evening of entertainment.

We leave Younghusband and head back to Mannum. After breakfast, we reluctantly say farewell as we arrive at the Mannum Wharf. You will then transfer back to a hotel in Adelaide arriving around 12.30 pm. The afternoon is yours free to wander the city of Adelaide before settling into your included accommodation for the night.

An early morning pick-up from your hotel for a scenic coach transfer to Cape Jervis taking in the picturesque Fleurieu Peninsula with its vineyards, coastal views, and rolling hills. On arrival, board the SeaLink ferry for the 45-minute crossing to Penneshaw on Kangaroo Island. Here you will board your luxury SeaLink coach, and your local driver/guide will take you on a tour of South Australia’s premier nature-based tourism destination.

Visit Seal Bay Conservation Park where you will be taken on a guided beach walk with an experienced guide and be amongst a colony of rare Australian sea lions. Get up close and see these wild creatures frolic and laze about – a truly amazing and unforgettable experience. After your visit to Seal Bay Conservation Park, you will enjoy a delicious two-course lunch.

Spend the afternoon in the Flinders Chase National Park, which was devastated by the worst fire to ever hit the island in January 2020. You’ll see that the regeneration of the native bush occurs so quickly after the event and there will be many opportunities to take photos. As you travel through the park, keep an eye out for echidnas, wallabies, reptiles, and koalas. See the rugged coastline from walks around Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch. Remarkable Rocks provide great photographic opportunities, and the Admirals Arch boardwalk takes you down a rugged cliff face to reveal the spectacular rock archway, a natural nursery and safe haven for playful Long-nosed Fur Seals.

Your last visit of the day is to the Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park to feed some kangaroos and get up close to the Kangaroo Island Koalas while listening to the Keeper talk about the cuddly mammals. There is also a possibility that you will see more kangaroos and wallabies on your way to your chosen overnight accommodation.

Start your day with a delicious, cooked breakfast before heading off on day 2 of your tour. Today your local guide will introduce you to some of the island’s leading creators where you will see a “Free Flight” display of raptors and taste some local Kangaroo Island produce. Your first official stop will be the fascinating Birds of Prey Presentation at Raptor Domain for an educational, interactive, and inspiring experience. The only “Free Flight” Birds of Prey display in South Australia, it is thought by many to be the most interactive Birds of Prey presentation in Australia.

Next, travel to Emu Ridge Eucalyptus Distillery for a delicious lunch followed by an introductory talk about the history of the oil distillery and take a guided tour. You may choose to taste Kangaroo Island Ciders’ range of Colony Cove products including Apple Sparkler and Cider (additional cost). Finish off with some free time in their souvenir shop where you will find an assortment of Eucalyptus products. Your next stop is Clifford’s Honey Farm, where you’ll enjoy an informative guided tour of the honey room where you will learn about the extraction process, taste a honey soft drink, and have the option to sample the Drunken Drone Brewery’s Honey Wheat Ale. In the farm gate shop, you can see a working beehive where you can try to spot the Queen bee. There are different varieties of pure Kangaroo Island Ligurian honey and beauty products to purchase as well as their famous honey ice cream.

Continue to Pennington Bay, a spectacular beach on the south coast of Kangaroo Island for a photo opportunity before arriving at your final stop False Cape Wines Cellar Door. This stunning new cellar door is made from recycled wood, jetty timbers, and limestone sourced on the property. Here you can take part in a structured wine tasting while enjoying the peaceful views of the surrounding vineyards.

Your tour ends at the Penneshaw Hotel where you have ample time to have dinner (own expense) before returning to the Penneshaw Ferry Terminal for your ferry and coach transfer back to your Adelaide accommodation.

Even better than expected. My best friend and I chose the 3 night river cruise as a way to spend time together while living in separate states. We expected it to be a quiet relaxing few days with lots of “oldies”. In fact we very active 70 year olds were by no means the youngest on board and , with all the activities on offer, we were kept very busy and met such a lot of interesting, fun people over the few days. The crew were friendly and professional, food was good if not adventurous, the scenery absolutely stunning and so varied, all viewed from our gorgeous home vessel the Murray Princess. Yes, the cabins are very basic and tiny but served the purpose. You do need to be tidy! We ladies had such a good time we are planning to take our husbands back for the 4 night trip. It is such an Aussie adventure. Ruth

We did the 4 day Murray Princess cruise . The cruise is very relaxing with delicious food and very friendly staff. A great experience. The river is so beautiful. I hadn’t expected such gorgeous scenery. The boat was great, just big enough with several lounges. There wasn’t any over crowding in any part of the boat. The excursions were good too. The cabins although small were well set out and we didn’t have any problems with space. Beds were comfy. Only thing I can recommend is that the coffee shop be opened at 7am for us coffee lovers who love a good cappuccino first thing in the mornings. There was a coffee/tea station available 24 hours a day with biscuits and a big fruit basket which was appreciated. All in all a fabulous experience and I recommend everyone take a trip down the Murray River. Colleen

Starting from Mannum for a Murray River Cruise on the Murray Princess. We had a great 4 night cruise on the Murray Princess last week. We especially liked the time we spent at the Sunnydale property checking out the sheep shearing display and going for a spotlighting tour around the property that night. The Murray Princess crew also put on a great BBQ and show as well. The crew were great in all areas of making sure of our comfort, entertain and food requirements. Judith C

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

princess cruises kangaroo island

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.
