Enjoying the City from the water: Ottawa Boat Cruise Paul’s Boat Lines Review

On my recent trip to Ottawa we decided to take an Ottawa boat cruise on our first day in the city to give us an overview of the city and its history along with getting the “lay of the land”.  Paul’s Boat Lines Ottawa River Cruise offers a 1.5 hr tour that includes magnificent views of the Parliament Buildings, Museum of Civilization, Rideau Falls, glimpses of Sussex Dr and much more.

Paul’s Boat Lines Review

Ottawa Boat Cruise pauls boat lines

The staff on Paul’s Boat Lines were extremely friendly and helpful  From the ticket office to the captain everyone went the extra mile to make sure we had an enjoyable boat cruise with the kids.  Monkey even had a chance to drive the boat!  I would suggest ditching the stroller and opting for a baby carrier or walking.  The boat has 2 levels, and if you are spending most of your time on the upper deck (where the best views are) you will not be able to get your stroller up there easily.

Enjoying the City from the water

Ottawa Boat Cruise pauls boat lines

The Ottawa boat cruise was divided up into approximately 45 minutes of sight seeing with commentary from your guide and 45 minutes of time to relax, walk around on the boat to enjoy the sights and ask any questions you have about the city.  The perfect length of time to enjoy some time on the water without the kids getting bored.  The tour guide was friendly and knowledgeable, she had no problem answers our questions about the city and some of the landmarks along the skyline.

When planning your cruise with Paul’s Boat Cruises I would give them a quick call to confirm departure times and locations.  Depending on water levels or other factors the times/locations may change.  A quick call to their helpful office staff will have you all set for an enjoyable cruise.

Paul’s Boat lines offers tours on the Ottawa River and the Rideau Canal at affordable rates .  If you are visiting Ottawa I would highly recommend taking an Ottawa Boat Cruise with Paul’s Boat Lines during your stay as it is a beautiful way to experience the city.

Disclosure:  I was provided with complimentary passes.  All opinions are strictly my own.

Your little guy is so cute. He looks so happy with his ice cream. It sounds like a wonderful way to see the city and having a good tour guide like that makes it so easy when you go back on your own; he/she will have given you a good start.

oh how i’d love to go on a cruise right now!

Whenever we ravel I always like to take advantage of tours like this, whether by land or sea. It looks like you had a relaxing day sightseeing!

Adorable pictures!! I have never been to Canada. It’s been a long time since my little boy traveled by boat, though, I bet he’d love it.

Wow that place is gorgeous

I love doing water tours! It’s always a treat to see buildings and homes from a different angle, and boat tour guides always seem to be full of the most interesting, unique facts about the area.

Your little ones are precious! 🙂

that looks amazing! I have never take a water tour before but have always dreamed about one day taking my family!

For starters, there’s nothing quite like a boat ride. So much fun…so exhilarating…but when you add in the sights you got to see, holy moly. What an experience! I’m jealous!

I would love to take my son on a boat. Anyway it looks like you all had fun. Have a nice weekend.

What an amazing experience! I would love to have a chance to go on a boat ride like that. Ok…so I got a moonlight river ride in Paris and saw the Eiffel tower twinkle at midnight…but still. It was awesome. I would love to have another boat ride…and one that I could take my kids on so they could enjoy it too.

Boat rides are fun on good days! Your little guy looks so happy!

Oh the pictures of your little guy just blog me away! He’s so so cute!

how stinkin cute is your little one at the wheel! looks like it was a fun boat cruise!

That looks amazing! The view is breathtaking

I’ve been to Ottawa twice before and it really is a beautiful city. The boat cruise looks like fun!

I am happy to hear that you enjoyed your Ottawa boat cruise. I too have brought my own children on these boat tours (we live here in Ottawa)when they were quite young, as well several times over the years. They have enjoyed the boat cruises and have enjoyed bringing our extended family along when they arrive in Ottawa for holidays. As children they could educate everyone about our wonderful city and tell them which land marks they were soon arriving at. Their grandparents used to love to take them when they were younger. Now, they return that favor and take take their grandparents. It is a lovely way to view the Parliament buildings and other scenic landmarks. I too would recommend anyone who has never been to take your families on this lovely little voyage along the river, it is quite beautiful.

Thanks for the review, we are going to Ottawa for the week and love new ideas.

I didn’t know you could take a cruise, I’d have loved to have done that when I was there. What a beautiful way to enjoy the city.

PA system needs upgrading, otherwise good tour. Clean boat and well maintained. Fun afternoon!

It's difficult planning out the day. You research, make reservations, buy tickets, and do everything you can. Then the traffic takes longer than anticipated, you got lost on the way, the card was declined because you forgot to call your credit card company. For some people, these little disasters ruin trips. Me? Just roll with it. For our schedule we wanted to do a canal tour, but it wasn't going to work for itinerary, so we opted for the river cruise instead. I am very glad we had done so. Rolling down the Ottawa river was a welcome break from all the walking, and you get to see these beautiful views of the city from the water that you otherwise would be completely unknown to you, like who really shot JFK. Our guide was a sweet and cheery girl, she enjoyed talking with guests and answering questions. The other staff were quite friendly, the boat was clean, and even had a bar (thank you sweet baby Jesus!) which allowed for my wife and I to enjoy a glass of wine on the river. Definitely recommend.

If you are in Ottawa and don't have much time this is the way to see the city, the boat is not the most beautiful but is big and they have food and drink on board, I really enjoy the tour on this boat, they guy explaining everything was awesome he was funny and he new a lot of stuff so I learn a lot about Ottawa and we know that a lot of Canadian history is in Ottawa, take the tour of u wanna see the city from another perspective, this was my favourite boat ride tour ever!!!!

paul's ottawa river cruise

For the price, it was semi-okay. We boarded in Hull side, there was only 6 of us getting onboard. Got on the boat and sat there for 15 minutes listening to small kids complain and act out. Then 5 minutes later we go to Ottawa side when 95% of all the passengers got off and another group came onboard, this was another 15 minutes. First half hour was sitting there watching nothing. The tour started and for an hour we got history and lots of picture opportunities. The guide said "this is end of talking portion". We stayed seating in green lawn chairs (to uncomfortable one), until the boat got back to Ottawa side. Was 45 minutes of hearing parents attempt to keep their children occupied. Then 95% got off in Ottawa and the 6 of us left sat at back of the boat and waiting to get back to Hull. Real down side, both guy whom looks like captains did not wear a mask; even when walking down middle of the crowd of people. If guide would have talked entire tour, time would not have ticked by. Having very young kids onboard (under age of 5) in +39 weather in middle of the day, not blaming parents, but was too long for the kiddies. Also none of chairs or railing got dis-infected between loads of people. Kids touching everything, including crawling on floor, then touching all over the chairs. After this boat ride, went immediately back to vehicle to Purely quickly and take some Advil.

Photo of Karen H.

I definitely wouldn't do this again and would never recommend this excursion - very disappointing. In my opinion, the boat was dumpy, and in much need of repairs/updates. Old, decrepit conference centre chairs were used as seating - I expected better. Boat was slower than slow and had a crappy sound system - could not hear a word the guide was saying. Sitting through the ride was like watching paint dry. Most concerning was the TOTAL lack of Covid protocol, reminders or enforcement. Considering the unavoidable close proximity to other passengers, masks should have been strictly mandatory. Ridiculous, especially in the city of Ottawa!!

Photo of Parisa C.

Took the river boat ride that took us on some historic sites and a waterfall even showed us where the prime ministers live. 1.5 hours, fun on a nice day. However noticed that capital cruises has seats that are all along the side of the upper deck which would be nicer.

The boat is comfortable. Seating at the top, open air and covered. Prompt to board and ?deboard? The views are nice. The guide is very knowledgeable and good natured. However, you don't really SEE much of anything; partial sides of buildings, rooftops of "important" buildings like homes of ambassadors, the PM, Rideau Hall. It is also too long. The kids were catatonic by the end. $8 for 3 bottles of Selection (grocery store house brand) purchased on board. Rideau Falls are gross, dirty and unimpressive. Just brown water and the constructed surroundings take away from any natural beauty. FYI - the River is dirty, so dirty and brown. From what I read, it's a long standing battle to get it clean.

Photo of Amanda D.

Since the Ottawa River is so important to Ottawa's heritage, beauty and industry, I think it's a good idea to take a boat tour of the river and/or canal if you're visiting the city. From the Ottawa River, you get a privileged view of Ottawa, Gatineau, Parliament buildings, 24 Sussex, Rideau Falls, NAC, Museum of Civilization, Rideau Hall and Supreme Court. They take you close enough to the falls that you feel the mist off the crashing water. While you're aboard the boat, you can choose between indoor and outdoor seating, and you can also help yourself to the canteen or bar. Prices for this tour are $18 for adults, $16 for students or seniors, $10 for children 5-15 and $45 for a family. You can also get a package deal for the Ottawa River and Rideau Canal tours. For one adult, it costs $30. However, I don't think it's worth your money to take the Rideau Canal tour. Everything you see from the boat, you can see walking along the canal's pathways. Also, if you want to get a better view of Dow's Lake, I'd suggest renting a kayak, paddle boat or canoe at the Pavilion. If you're departing from the Ottawa dock, the Ottawa River tour lasts 1.5 hours. It's a nice view of the city and mainly great for visitors, but it's not overly exciting.

This business stole my money. They changed boarding location last minute causing chaos and then refused to refund money. They really ruined my one day trip to Ottawa. Stay away from this company, they are basically bunch of scammers. Very rude management specially Monica that was in contact with me when I complained. I filed a dispute to get money back.

Photo of Alan S.

Our group took one of these tours down the Ottawa River. It was alright, but there are a lot of people on the boat and if you want to take pictures you will probably end up standing at the front or back of the boat since sitting leads to people's heads in your shots. Also there are kids running around and its just plastic deck chairs. So it's not a luxury cruise but more of a family event. The presentation is in both English and French and the guide talks for about the first hour of the 90 minute tour. Our guide was very nice about answering questions and taking pictures for people during the last part. While an enjoyable thing to do... it's very touristy and you can see most of the same things just walking around Ottawa. The most unique part was the falls just East (I think) of the city that you have to see from the boat to appreciate. So just that part might make it worth the expense. Also, if you want to see the outdoor highlights of the city in 90 minutes without having to do all the walking... it's probably the most effective way to do it.

  • paulines303 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Relaxing cruise away from the bustle of the city This is a relaxing cruise along an historical canal that takes in quite a few of the sights of Ottowa. The seats are not particularly comfortable and we ran out of wine so there were some drawbacks but it was interesting to hear the history of why the canal was built. Read more Written March 11, 2024

  • hannahlJ7261JN 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles False advertising The advertising said this was accessible. I use a walker and cannot do stairs. When we arrived we discovered that the boat is accessible but getting to it is not. None of the crew had any idea how to locate the ramp to be used. With much help from my friend we got there. On our return to shore another passenger told us how to find the ramp to reach our vehicle. Faulty advertising! Read more Written September 19, 2023
  • Swiss-Tony64 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Disappointing - certainly not a history lesson! Overall we found this a disappointing experience, on a positive note the canal cruise offered chance to take the weight off our feet for 90 minutes. However the commentary was childish and repetitive throughout, why was it so important to talk endlessly about the building of the German embassy? Hardly an important fact about the canal! We ended up using an internet search to learn about the history of this engineering achievement. Read more Written September 19, 2023

  • daviddX9080IN 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles A lovely excursion. My wife and I enjoyed this 90-minute cruise along the Rideau Canal. The narrator was entertaining, and it was great that she went back and forth between English and French throughout the trip. The scenery along the Rideau Canal is lovely and the trip was very relaxing. It was maybe a little pricey, but overall the cruise was well worth it. Read more Written September 16, 2023

The tour guide Kenzie was very knowledgeable and was able to answer all my questions. The bartender Logan was nice. As a first time visitor to Ottawa I was glad to take this cruise and when I make it back there I will probably go again. Read more Written September 16, 2023
