Then look no further, this list is full of my favorite fun weekend getaways in Michigan. I was born and raised in the Midwest, and Michigan is one of my favorite Midwestern states to visit.

Michigan has more shoreline than any other state except Alaska which means a lot of beaches. Add to that incredible scenery, amazing architecture, small towns and big cities, there is so much to do, see and visit in this Great Lakes State.

With that in mind, I came up with this list of the 15 best weekend getaways in Michigan!

Sleeping Bear Dunes For Outdoor Adventure

If you are looking for a weekend full of outdoor adventures, then consider heading out to Sleeping Bear Dunes.

Sleeping Bear Dunes is a national Lakeshore in Michigan, and one of the best beaches in Michigan .

The beach is miles of white sandy dunes and beautiful views of Lake Michigan.

While exploring, you’ll find miles of hiking trails, a historic Lighthouse and Life Saving Station, and an adorable coastal village.

There is also a Visitors Center that you should check out if you want to learn a little more history about the area.

Depending on what time of year you go, along with hiking, you can also enjoy plenty of watersports.

Sleeping Bear Dunes is a great weekend getaway in Michigan if you want to reconnect with the great outdoors.

New Buffalo The Popular Resort Town

New Buffalo is a popular resort town in Michigan that is part of the vacation district known as ‘Harbor Country’.

This charming beach town is nestled on the shores of the majestic Lake Michigan.

If you are looking for a small coastal town to explore, you’ll find there are tons of things to do in New Buffalo .

The town has a casino, a beach park, plenty of unique shops, and more.

The ‘Big Red Lighthouse’ was built and rebuilt several times and has architectural nods to the country of Holland.

In 1956 the US Coast Guard painted it bright red and catapulted it into becoming one of the most iconic lighthouses in Michigan.

Visitors love spending the weekend in Holland exploring the Bavarian-style village shops and center, and of course, seeing ‘Big Red’.

If you are staying the whole weekend, you can plan a backpacking trip around the island and have some fun camping.

For those who want to explore for a few days, but not necessarily camp, you can find plenty of hotels in Houghton or Copper Harbor.

However, I suggest staying on Isle Royale the whole weekend as the ferry ride from Michigan can take 3 1/2 – 6 hours.

It is definitely worth it to spend the weekend camping.

Visitors to the National Park can also enjoy watersports, guided hikes, and there is a Visitor’s Center.

If you are looking for a rugged adventure weekend, you can’t go wrong exploring Isle Royale National Park.

Mackinac Island Is A Perfect Romantic Getaway

If you are looking for a romantic weekend getaway in Michigan, then look no further.

Mackinac Island is the perfect place for you and your partner to enjoy a weekend together.

The small island is located in Lake Huron and is one of Michigan’s most popular vacation spots.

Mackinac Island is a charming coastal town that is incredibly unique, for several reasons.

From the Capitol Building, several different museums, a National Historic Landmark, and more.

Many of them are free or fairly inexpensive to view or explore.

The city is also full of one of a kind breweries, distilleries, and restaurants.

In the summer, it’s a foodie’s paradise with food and beer festivals happening almost every weekend somewhere in the city.

Lansing also has a thriving art district, with four neighborhoods full artists and art galleries.

If you want a break from exploring the city, you can take a walk on the River Trail and find yourself surrounded by nature.

Lansing is full of activities with something for everyone.

You’ll find beautiful art galleries, art shops, and even street art.

Packing List For Your Michigan Weekend Getaways

A  concealed travel pouch may be one of the most important items you bring along when on your weekend getaways in Michigan. It is always important to protect your personal information.

I like that it holds its charging capabilities for several uses so I do not have to worry about it while out and about, and if I forget to recharge it at night, it will still be good to go the next day.

My daughter gifted me with this  FugeTek selfie stick and tripod   setup for my birthday. I absolutely love it! It is made of lightweight aluminum and so easy to use. It has Bluetooth connectivity and is a breeze to use for group shots or that perfect selfie! 

I was not a fan of packing cubes until I started to use them! This is the  exact set  of packing organizers I use  whenever I travel.

I cannot believe how much they really do help with the organization. If you have not considered packing cubes, I would recommend giving them a try.

Hydration is so important. You want to remain hydrated to support your immune system which in turn will be stronger to fight off any germs you will encounter during your travels. 

You will want to bring your own  refillable water bottle  with you. 

I never leave home on a trip without my  Bobble filtration bottle .  The 18.5-ounce size is perfect for travel and it fits nicely in the pocket of a backpack or your purse.

When filled with water, it is not too heavy to carry. And the charcoal filter ensures fresh clean water whenever you fill the Bobble. You can find  filter replacements here. 

Perhaps you are traveling a long distance and packing space is a premium in your suitcase, or in your car. Then this  set of collapsible silicone foldable water bottles  would work well for you. Would not take up much space at all. 

You will want a  backpack or daypack  with you to store snacks, your water bottle, phone, extra clothes, etc.. This   foldable water-resistant backpack   would be great.

One more point, there’s really nothing in Lansing except the uninspiring capital and MSU. Ann Arbor has much more to offer. It is a melting pot of cultures offering art, food, sightseeing and adventure.

Lansing is Michigan's capital city, known as a major automobile production center throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries. The city's automobile history is documented at the R.E. Michigan just may be the best-kept secret for U.S. travel destinations.

My husband grew up in Michigan and all of my in-laws still live there. The first few times my husband took me there after we started dating I was blown away by the beauty and the sheer number of things to do in Michigan!

Now, I love it there, too, and so am excited to share with you my top eight recommendations for where to spend a weekend getaway in Michigan.

Known for its great fishing spots, snowy winters, Great Lakes (adjacent to four of them), and impact on the auto industry, Michigan is an ideal destination for those interested in winter sports and summer festivals or lazy lake days. No matter when you choose to visit, a weekend in Michigan is bound to be memorable.

While most people think of Detroit when they think of Michigan, there are so many other places worth visiting here. Take a weekend trip to one of these destinations. Even if you only have a weekend to spend in Michigan, you’ll get to see plenty of what this state has to offer.

Traverse City

A weekend in Traverse City should include stops at its many museums. From a collection of Inuit art at the Dennos Museum Center to the hands-on Great Lakes Children’s Museum, you’re bound to find something that intrigues you and your travel buddies here.

This Michigan trip destination is also known for its cherries, so stop by the Cherry Republic of Traverse City for a wide array of locally-sourced products.

While in Traverse City, you’re also a relatively short drive (about 40 minutes) from Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakefront, which borders Lake Superior and has incredible views and hiking trails. Plus, it provides lots of fun for playing and sliding on the dunes.

The best time to visit Traverse City is during the summer, which coincides with the cherry-picking season. If you’ll be in town around the Fourth of July, plan your getaway around the National Cherry Festival . After all, who can say no to a weekend filled with fireworks and delicious food?!

Grand Rapids

Like Traverse City, Grand Rapids is a great place to visit with kids. It has a children’s museum (Grand Rapids Children’s Museum) and a zoo (John Ball Zoo).

For adult fun, you can go brewery hopping in “Beer City USA,” a title Grand Rapids has earned for its large number of taprooms.

Grand Rapids has its own international airport, making it easy to coordinate travel for your weekend trip. Fly into Gerald R. Ford International Airport or take an Amtrak train downtown.

This popular Michigan getaway is known for its cultural attractions. Ann Arbor is home to the University of Michigan and has a distinct college-town vibe while also incorporating its own flair separate from the university thanks to good eats and historic architecture.

You can catch musical events and art exhibitions year-round through A2SF , and if you visit Ann Arbor in June, you’ll be in town for their annual festival. For food, you can’t miss trying one of Zingermann’s famous subs (expect to wait in line!).

Ann Arbor is close to Detroit Wayne County Airport, so you won’t need to drive far after landing. While this is a fun place to visit any time of year, you’ll likely find the most to do during the summer.

Ann Arbor is also just a half hour away from Hell, another fun tourist destination. Playing off of its attention-grabbing name, this small town is home to the aptly named Hell Hole Diner and a gift shop called Screams (which also serves up some delicious ice cream). Whether your trip to Ann Arbor is during the spooky season or when Hell freezes over in the winter months, be sure to add room on your trip itinerary for this day trip destination.

Mackinac Island

Once a port used during the fur trade, Mackinac Island is now a car-free destination filled with nature and history. Much of this weekend getaway destination is considered a Michigan state park, so have your camera ready to capture the beauty of your surroundings.

A top thing to do during your trip to Mackinac Island is to visit Colonial Michilimackinac and the nearby fort to see living history interpreters and check out historical exhibits.

Also, don’t leave without sampling some of the famous fudge from Mackinac Island Fudge!

Since you can’t drive to Mackinac Island, you’ll need to take a ferry to get there. The ferry runs from April through October, and you can bring a pet or bicycle with you. While you can still visit Mackinac Island when the ferry isn’t running, the alternative is a 7-minute flight. Therefore, your best bet is to visit when the ferry is running to save money.

Harbor Springs

There’s always something fun happening in Harbor Springs, MI. If you’re visiting over the weekend, check out the local galleries and boutiques. From jewelry to glasswork, you’ll find all sorts of trinkets to bring home with you. Try to align your trip with an interesting event or festival – every month has something different to offer!

In winter, ski buffs will enjoy a weekend getaway to Harbor Springs since it has some of the best skiing in Michigan at Boyne Highlands Resort. (Not to be confused with Boyne Mountain Resort 40 minutes to the south in Boyne Falls – though that’s also a great place for skiing in Michigan!)

Harbor Springs is roughly a half hour away from Mackinac Island, so consider visiting both if you’re taking an extended weekend for your trip. Since the town hosts celebrations during each season, this is an ideal place to visit year-round.

If you’re looking for wineries in Michigan, look no further than Baroda, Michigan. Here, you’ll find Gravity Vineyards and Winery’s tasting room overlooking the lake, and Red Top Winery’s selection of wines and ciders. You can visit even more wineries in nearby Berrien Springs.

The best time to visit Baroda is during the summer when there isn’t much rain and the temperature is tolerable. You can get here by flying into South Bend International Airport in Indiana, about a half hour away. Alternatively, there are a couple of Amtrak stations nearby that you can take a train into.

Chateau Chantal

Another winery that is a destination all unto itself and makes for a great weekend getaway in Michigan is Chateau Chantal in Traverse City near the Old Mission Peninsula. This is a great spot for a romantic rendezvous or a girls’ trip. My sister-in-law and her friends often go here for their annual mom’s weekend away. And my husband proposed here…so yeah, we like this place. 😉

Chateau Chantal has sprawling grounds lined with vineyards that are adjacent to the impressive tasting room, a large space with plenty of room at the tasting room bar. But you might want to take your glass of Reisling or another varietal to the patio, which has an expansive view over the gorgeous vineyards.

Best of all for an easy, no-stress wine weekend away is that there is a B&B right on site where you can stay.

Frankenmuth

Also known as Little Bavaria, Frankenmuth is a cultural hotspot for all things German, located about 90 minutes north of Detroit. Festivals like Oktoberfest and Zehnder’s Snowfest are great reasons to visit Frankenmuth on their own. If you won’t be in town during the festival season, you can still get a taste of Germany on a tour of Frankenmuth Brewery.

If you’re traveling with kids, head to one of the two indoor water parks in town (Zehnder’s Splash Village and Bavarian Inn Lodge Waterpark and Family Fun Center, the latter of which is only open to overnight guests). So even if it’s cold outside, don’t forget to pack a bathing suit!

Frankenmuth is relatively close to Bishop International Airport, and there’s also an Amtrak station in nearby Saginaw. There’s quite a bit of activity here in the fall and winter, making these the perfect times to visit.

A ghost named Nell is said to visit this 1909 inn , built when Nahma was a lumber company town. It's still a favorite haunt, thanks to charming period-style rooms, an on-site restaurant and a lounge that serves (distilled) spirits. Water-based fun beckons outside on Big Bay de Noc.

Roam Inn, Munising

A lumber baron's 1896 home has morphed into a lodge-look inn by Lake Superior's Munising Bay, a jumping-off point for Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and Grand Island National Recreation Area. Rustic woodwork sets off the common areas and 18 guest rooms, some of which offer bay views.

Lighthouse Lodgings

Several lighthouses let volunteers stay in exchange for greeting guests, guiding tours, helping in the gift shop and other duties (training provided). The two-story brick building and adjoining tower contain seven guest rooms (with private baths), a shared living room, a library and a sauna. Climb the 1896 lantern tower to take in views from 120 feet above Lake Superior-survey fields and forests, spy the Huron Mountains, and (on a lucky night) glory in the aurora borealis. Roam the lakeshore or explore acres of woods and meadows crossed by trails and wildlife.

Check out this group of more than two dozen whimsical homes designed by Charlevoix's own Earl Young. The curved-roof dwellings with deep eaves and stone walls seem to have popped up like toadstools. Some of the private homes are available for short-term rental . View the exteriors on a walking or self-conducted driving tour of the neighborhood (free map from the Chamber of Commerce). You can also eat at the nearby Weathervane Restaurant and stay at the Weathervane Terrace Inn and Suites, both designed by Young.

Palmer House, Ann Arbor

Staying in a Frank Lloyd Wright home is a rare privilege. Few of the architect's designs are open to overnight guests. Among them is Palmer House, which is available for rent . Built in the early 1950s on the edge of Nichols Arboretum, Palmer House was one of Wright's last residential projects. The 2,000-square-foot brick and cypress home offers three bedrooms and two baths within its triangular layout. Though secluded in feel, the house is a five-minute drive from downtown.

Down-to-Earth Yurts

Porcupine mountains wilderness state park, ontonagon.

Cross a tent with a cabin to get a yurt, a snug-yet-sturdy structure used by Central Asia nomads and now popular among adventure campers. Porcupine Mountains has four 16-foot-diameter yurts for year-round use. Each weather-tight shelter sleeps four on bunk beds and comes with a wood stove and basic utensils—but no running water or electricity. The park provides an outhouse and wood. The only way to access the yurts is via park trails. The distance and difficulty of the hike depend on the season.

Muskegon State Park, Muskegon

A 20-foot-diameter yurt sits on a wooden deck and features a skylight in its domed roof. Two handmade log bunk beds and stacking cots sleep up to seven adults. Park trails and the nearby Muskegon Winter Sports Complex offer opportunities for outdoor fun. Though there's no running water, in warmer months you can use modern restrooms and showers at a campground across the road. In winter, count on using the provided outhouse.

Best Weekend Backpacking in Michigan

When I think about weekend backpacking in Michigan, immediately three destinations come to my mind: Manistee River Trail, North Manitou Island and Pictured Rocks.

Manistee River Trail/North Country Trail Loop

The Manistee River/North Country Trail Loop is a perfect backpacking trail for a weekend trip ( The trails are about 30 miles west of Cadillac, MI.) I would consider it to be the best destination for “backpacking in Michigan” in the Lower Peninsula. The total length of the loop comes to about 22 – 23 miles. Out of it, about 10 – 11 miles are on MRT and the rest is NCT. The MRT follows the river. And for few miles  from Hodenpyl Dam Pond it goes high above the river, on a bluff. The views are spectacular. The trail is fairly easy, without any significant hills. Still, there are many up and downs, so expect to get a workout. Also, hiking poles might come handy.

Most people prefer to go from Red Bridge to Seaton Creek Campground . And there is a valid reason for it – the campground there has only few sights and they are all along the parking lot next to the road. Seaton Creek Campground is pretty and is located deep in the woods. It is a drive in, so you will see some camping people there too. Of course, you can camp pretty much anywhere along the way, as long as you follow the U.S. Forest Service guidelines . As you hike along the trails, you will notice many popular spots selected for camping.

After spending the night, either, in a campsite along the trail or at the Red Bridge, or in Seaton Creek, you can continue on North Country Trail and complete the loop. However, I prefer to turn around on MRT and follow it back to my starting point. The reason for it is that MRT offers , pretty much along the whole way, incredible views of the river, while NCT goes through the woods. The trail is far enough away from the river, that you, for most part, cannot see it. I always wondered, why the NRT was routed this way, when you have a beautiful river only quarter to half mile away.

Camping along the NCT is allowed, however, since the trail does not follow the river, there are no immediate water sources there. Of course, you could bushwhack you way through the woods to the shoreline.

There are water pumps at both, Red Bridge and Seaton Creek.

Backpacking on MRT does not require any permits, and the campsites along the trail are available on the first-come rule. There is no fee to hike or to camp along the trail, or at Red Bridge. The designated campground at Seaton Creek requires a fee.

North Manitou Island

The North Manitou island is part of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. It is located on Lake Michigan few miles off of the northwest part of Lower Peninsula of Michigan. To get to the island, you need to take a ferry ride from Leland. The ferry service, depending on the season, operates more or less frequently. Therefore, check the schedule before going. Also, plan your trip in such a way, that if Lake Michigan gets rough and the ferry doesn’t come, you can afford to spend an additional day on the island.

The island has about 23 miles of trails. The hiking is easy, as the trails are mostly flat. Some of them follow the shoreline offering some unforgettable views of the lake.

The best part is that you can camp almost anywhere. There are many spots along the shore that will, again, offer some incredible views from the tent. Another great thing about backpacking there is the fact, that there are usually not that many people on the island at a time (even though it seems crowded, when you get of the ferry). So, soon after you start hiking, you are alone, and when you camp along the shore, you usually have few miles of beautiful sandy beach to yourself, or to share with your party.

One thing to consider is that the bugs on the island are usually in abundance from Memorial Day weekend till at least August. Therefore, I usually go there in in Spring, or early September.

Pictured Rocks

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore , located on the shore of Lake Superior in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, is another great backpacking destination in Michigan. I would consider it to be the best destination for “backpacking in Michigan” in the Upper Peninsula.

The long linear trail follows the lake’s shoreline, with gradually changing landscape of beaches, bluffs, and cliffs. The total length of the trail from Sable Falls to Munising Falls is over 42 miles. Therefore it is more suitable for three to four day trip. Of course, you can backpack just a section of the trail, if you only have a regular weekend to spend there. The biggest logistic issue to deal when backpacking in Pictured Rocks is the fact that the trail is linear and if you don’t want to hike out-and-back, you need to figure out how to get back where you left your car.  You have two options. If your party has at least two vehicles, you can shuttle one to the end point. Another option is to relay on shuttle service offered at the park. You can find more information at the link below.

While Detroit holds its own as a vibrant city with plenty of exciting things to do, venturing off to somewhere new can help break up the monotony of daily life. And with busy work and life schedules to balance, a weekend getaway offers the perfect compromise. The best destinations near Detroit include beach towns, other major cities, and even an international adventure.

These ten exciting weekend trips from Detroit will get you out of the city in about 4.5 hours or less.

1. Cleveland, Ohio

No doubt best known for its famous Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and lively sports scene, Cleveland, Ohio , is a bustling city getaway. If cheering for the Cleveland Browns, Cavaliers, or Indians is a no-go, other top attractions include visiting the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, strolling through the Botanical Gardens, and shopping at the West Side Market.

Sampling famous Cleveland delicacies is also one of the best things to do in this Ohio city. Famous dishes include the towering corned beef sandwich from Slyman’s, the tasty Pierogi from Sokolowski’s University Inn, and a sweet treat from Jack Frost Donuts.

Toledo, Ohio is an up-and-coming city that’s often overlooked, but its close location makes it an easy weekend trip from Detroit – and don’t let this unsuspecting Midwestern city fool you! There’s plenty of exciting attractions and excellent restaurants to keep you happily entertained.

Favorite things to do include visiting the historic Erie Canal Experience, the Glass City Metropark, and the Toledo Zoo. The Toledo Museum of Art is also often at the top of visitor’s to-do lists, as is the Libbey Glass Factory Outlet, where you can learn more about how Toledo got the nickname “Glass City.”

3. Chicago, Illinois

If you’re looking for a guaranteed good time, a weekend spent in the Windy City is a no-brainer. While Chicago’s notable tourist sites include the thrilling Willis Tower observation deck, Navy Pier, and the shop-lined Magnificent Mile, the city also boasts an infinite number of unique things to do.

Consider going back in time at The Violet Hour, a speakeasy bar in the hip Wicker Park district. Popping by The Wiener Circle in Lincoln Park for a plump Chicago dog is also a must, as is hunting for the best deep dish pizza in the city.

When you’re not off playing a round or golf or wandering the quaint downtown streets, the island’s historic forts and state park hiking trails are some of the more upbeat activities to enjoy. The island is also famous for its local fudge shops, making an astounding 10,000 pounds of fudge each day in peak season.

5. Saugatuck, Michigan

Trade the chaotic streets of Detroit for the peaceful shores of Lake Michigan at Saugatuck . This famous beach town is best known for Oval Beach, a strip of soft sand surrounded by tall grasses and striking dunes.

For the adventurous, consider a Saugatuck dune ride where you learn more about the area while speedily drifting along the dunes. The hiking trails at Mount Baldhead Park and restaurants along Butler Street are also must-do attractions while visiting Saugatuck. • Please call to reserve your trip.
• Our pick-up shuttle times are similar to a hotel check out. We will need to pick-up you and your gear by noon (preferably earlier). Some exceptions and restrictions apply. Please call for details.
• Carlisle Canoe Livery will be glad to help any customer with their itinerary, but it is ultimately your responsibility to make all arrangements. Timing varies per group so think about how much time you want to spend on the river and at your designated stops - plan your schedule accordingly.
• Campsites from Grayling to Mio are all owned and operated by the State of Michigan. These are available on a first come, first served basis.
• Campsites past Mio are a mix of state, federal and privately owned and some will require a reservation. It is your responsibility to reserve your campsite.
• Remember you are in a canoe or kayak so pack lighter than normal.

You're running out of time to get your own pair of certified glasses if you're wanting to catch a glimpse of the total solar ecli pse that is nearly one week away.

If you're planning to be among the millions of people in the United States who will witness the spectacular sight on April 8, having a proper pair of glasses couldn't be more paramount . Until the moon completely blocks the sun's disc on the path of totality and ushers in darkness , the sun's rays will pose a danger to unprotected retinas gazing skyward.

At this point, proper eyewear may be hard to come by and some may be tempted to turn to alternative methods such as welding goggles . But if you know where to look, you may just luck out and find a vendor or even a local library with some still in stock.

Here's what to know about where to find last-minute solar eclipse glasses.

Compared to regular sunglasses , proper eclipse glasses are 100,000 times darker to block nearly all visible, infrared and ultraviolet light and protect our sensitive retinas when looking upward near the sun.

That's why experts widely recommend them for those who will be watching as the upcoming solar eclipse charts a 115-mile-wide path of totality across North America.

Reputable vendors can be found on any eclipse websites like  NationalEclipse.com, which sells a variety of eyewear products, along with plenty of other gadgets one may need to see the eclipse. Additionally, American Paper Optics, the nation's largest supplier of eclipse glasses, offers express shipping and includes a  a countdown at the top of its website  to let you know the deadline to make a purchase to get your glasses in time for the big day.

Warby Parker, which actually plans to give out free solar eclipse glasses beginning Monday, may also be a good place to check.

Here are some other companies offering specials and deals timed for the big deal, including offers on eclipse glasses.

Finally, you may want to check your local library or other public institutions in your area, as many of these places have been offering free eclipse glasses to residents. Just don't count on supplies still being available.

How to make sure your solar eclipse glasses aren't fakes

The responsibility of guiding American consumers to the safest eclipse glasses is largely left to the American Astronomical Society.

The organization maintains  a curated list of approved vendors  of solar eclipse glasses and its been updated to give priority to North American manufacturers for the upcoming astral event. Products you purchase that are listed on that site are guaranteed to be  in compliance with  the highest international safety standards.

Those standards are set by the International Organization for Standardization, which only vouches for solar eclipse glasses that are dark and strong enough to filter out a certain amount of the sun's harmful light.

Of course, plenty of fakes and cheap imitators are proliferating the online marketplace in the leadup to the eclipse.

A good rule of thumb is to avoid any vendors making the grand (and entirely made-up) claim that their products are endorsed by NASA. As the space agency reiterated to USA TODAY , it only advises that people get a pair of glasses, but does not recommend or certify any particular product.

The astronomical society also provides some  helpful tips  for other useful ways to spot scams and counterfeit glasses.

What else to know about the April 8 total solar eclipse

A total solar eclipse offers the unique opportunity for skygazers to witness the spectacular astral display with the naked eye – but only when the time is right.

Eclipse glasses are still very much needed for most of the show, so make sure to come prepared,  according to NASA .

But when the moon moves completely in front of the sun and blocks its light, you'll know it's safe to fully take in the dazzling display. That moment is what is called "totality," whereby uncharacteristic darkness falls and all but the sun's outermost layer known as its corona makes a rare appearance to us here on Earth.

Hundreds of cities in  13 states are on the path of totality  for this year's total solar eclipse, which will pass from southwest to northeast across North America. You won't want to miss it, as this is the last such eclipse in North American  until 2044 .

And as you make your eclipse-viewing plans,  these interactive maps  should help you chart the time and duration for when totality would occur in cities along the path.
