When it comes to quad biking on your holiday, make sure you're covered with specific travel insurance because the standard insurance from hire companies typically only includes third party cover. If you damage the vehicle, you could be facing hefty charges and even arrest if you can't pay up.

Helmets are a must for both drivers and passengers, and not wearing one might mean your insurance won't cover you. Plus, if the local police catch you without a helmet, expect a fine and to say goodbye to your licence.

Turkey's summer is notorious for wildfires, and the government's latest advice doesn't take this lightly. It warns: "You could get a fine or prison sentence for lighting a fire of any kind or discarding cigarettes in risk areas such as woodland. Barbecues are prohibited in these areas. If there is a wildfire in your area, local authorities may tell you to leave your accommodation. Follow the directions of local authorities."

Video shows FedEx cargo plane land on its nose in Istanbul after landing gear fails

define tours turkey

A Boeing-767 type cargo plane operated by FedEx ran into a couple of bumps and sparks as it attempted to land at Istanbul Airport in Turkey without its front landing gear Wednesday.

The cargo plane, operated by FedEx, was flying from Paris' Charles de Gaulle Airport, according to a statement by Turkey's Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Abdulkadir Uraloğlu , when the pilot of the aircraft informed the control tower at Istanbul Airport that its landing gear had failed to open. The official said airport officials sprang into action and assisted the aircraft in touching down, while managing to remain on the runway. Emergency response, medical teams and necessary fire extinguishing equipment was also deployed on standby, Uraloğlu said.

Video footage from the landing shows the plane touching down on the runway before it tilts forward and starts dragging on its nose the runway creating a cloud of dust and sparks. It eventually comes to a stop with its fuselage touching the ground. As the plane comes to a halt, fire trucks douse the plane with water.

"With the successful guidance of our staff, the aircraft landed smoothly on its fuselage," Uraloğlu said.

No injuries reported

Two pilots were onboard the aircraft, according to Uraloğlu's statement, and were medically assessed after the landing. No injuries were reported.

The runway where the plane had landed was temporarily closed for all flights as multiple agencies gathered on site. A video shared by the minister shows crews and officials gathered around the aircraft while a fire truck and ambulance are parked on the side.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing, said Uraloğlu without going into further details into why the landing gear had failed.

Another Boeing plane issue? Don't fall for the headlines.

The freight aircraft involved in the accident is nearly 10 years old and was delivered to FedEx in 2014, according to a Boeing spokesperson. Following delivery, operators oversee ongoing maintenance for airplanes in operation. Reuters reported that Boeing 767 freighter is one of the most common cargo planes.

FedEx, meanwhile, in a statement to USA TODAY, said that the FedEx Express Flight 6268 was flying from Paris to Istanbul when it experienced an issue during landing.

"There were no reported injuries to our crew members," FedEx said. "We are coordinating with investigation authorities and will provide additional information as it is available."

While Boeing incidents have been in the news in recent months after a series of high-profile incidents, aviation experts maintain you shouldn't worry about flying .

“We don’t have to worry that there’s something systemically wrong with aviation,” Clint Balog, an associate professor at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, previously told USA TODAY.

It is located near Demre district of Antalya province in Turkey. The region is known for its natural and cultural beauty, as well as its mysterious sunken city that was partly submerged by an earthquake in the 2nd century.

The Island of Kekova The island of Kekova has an area of 4.5 km2 and is uninhabited. It was formerly known as Dolichiste in ancient times, and was one of the commercial centers of Lycia, a federation of city-states that existed in southwestern Anatolia from the 15th to the 6th century BC. The island was also occupied by the Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Crusaders, Seljuks, Ottomans and Italians at different periods of history.

The most striking feature of the island is the sunken ruins of Dolchiste, an ancient town that was destroyed by an earthquake during the 2nd century. The earthquake caused the land to sink by several meters, leaving behind the remains of houses, stairs, walls and tombs under the clear water. The town was rebuilt and flourished again during the Byzantine era, but was eventually abandoned due to the Arab raids in the 7th century.

The sunken city can only be accessed by boat tours from Kaş or Üçağız, and swimming is forbidden around the ruins to protect them from damage. However, visitors can gaze upon them from the boat or take photos. In Tersane Bay, on the northwest of the island, visitors can also swim and see the ruins of an ancient Byzantine church that was part of a dockyard and a city called Xera.

The Villages of Kaleköy and Üçağız Kaleköy and Üçağız are two villages that face the island of Kekova from the mainland. They are both ancient sites that have preserved their historical charm and authenticity.

Kaleköy, which means “castle village” in Turkish, is also known as Simena in ancient times. It is a small village that can only be reached by sea or on foot from Üçağız. It has a castle on a hilltop that dates back to the Middle Ages and offers a panoramic view of the bay. The castle was built by the Knights of Rhodes on top of a Lycian necropolis that contains many sarcophagi and rock-cut tombs. Inside the castle, there is also a small theater that could seat 300 people.

Üçağız, which means “three mouths” in Turkish, refers to the three exits to the open sea from its bay. It is also known as Teimioussa in ancient times. It is a larger village than Kaleköy and has a harbor where boats can dock. It has many ruins from the Lycian and Roman periods, such as a necropolis, an acropolis, a church and a bathhouse.

Both villages offer modest accommodation options for visitors who want to stay overnight and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. They also have restaurants that serve fresh seafood and local dishes.

The Ancient Towns of Aperlae, Dolchiste and Teimioussa Apart from the island of Kekova and the villages of Kaleköy and Üçağız, there are also three other ancient towns that are part of the Kekova region: Aperlae, Dolchiste and Teimioussa.

Aperlae was a Lycian town that was founded in the 4th century BC and became a Roman colony in the 1st century AD. It was located on the southern coast of Kekova island, opposite to Kaleköy. It was a prosperous town that had a harbor, a theater, an agora, temples, baths, cisterns and houses. It also had a defensive wall that surrounded it on three sides. The town was partly submerged by the same earthquake that affected Dolchiste in the 2nd century, but it continued to exist until the Byzantine period.

Dolchiste was another Lycian town that was located on the northern coast of Kekova island. It was founded in the 5th century BC and became part of the Roman Empire in the 1st century BC. It was a wealthy town that had a harbor, a theater, an agora, temples, baths, cisterns and houses. It also had a necropolis that contained many sarcophagi and rock-cut tombs. The town was destroyed by the earthquake in the 2nd century and sank into the sea, leaving behind its sunken ruins that are visible today.

Teimioussa was a Lycian town that was located on the mainland, near Üçağız. It was founded in the 4th century BC and became part of the Roman Empire in the 1st century BC. It was a small town that had a harbor, a theater, an agora, temples, baths, cisterns and houses. It also had a necropolis that contained many sarcophagi and rock-cut tombs. The town was abandoned in the Byzantine period due to the Arab invasions.

Conclusion Kekova is a region that offers a unique combination of natural and historical attractions. It is a place where visitors can witness the traces of ancient civilizations that lived and thrived on this land for centuries, and also enjoy the beauty of the turquoise sea and the green hills. Kekova is a region that deserves to be explored and appreciated by anyone who loves history, culture and nature.

Greek and Turkish leaders seek to stress thawing relations but tensions remain under the surface

ISTANBUL (AP) — The leaders of Greece and Turkey met Monday for talks aimed at underlining their efforts to put aside decades-old disputes , but they also revealed deep divisions over the Israel-Hamas war.

Speaking at a news conference in Ankara following the two-hour face-to-face summit, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan jumped on comments by Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in which he described Hamas as a terrorist organization.

“I do not see Hamas as a terror group, ” Erdogan said. “I see it as a group of people trying to protect their own land.” He also revealed that Turkey was currently treating “more than 1,000 Hamas members” in its hospitals.

Greece, like most Western states, considers Hamas a terrorist organization but Erdogan repeated his reference to the group as a “resistance organization.”

The leaders were meeting for the fourth time in the past year in a bid to strengthen a normalization process.

Turkey and Greece, which are NATO members, have been at odds for decades over a series of issues, including territorial claims in the Aegean Sea and drilling rights in the Mediterranean, and have come to the brink of war three times in the last half-century. A dispute over energy exploration rights in 2020 led to the two countries’ warships facing off in the Mediterranean.

They agreed last December to put their disputes aside and focus on areas where they can find consensus. The list of items on the so-called positive agenda includes trade, energy, education and cultural ties.

Since that summit in Athens, the regional rivals have maintained regular high-level contacts to promote fence-mending initiatives, such as allowing Turkish citizens to visit 10 Greek islands without cumbersome visa procedures.

Stressing the ties between the two countries, Mitsotakis said the deal allowed Turks and Greeks to “get to know each other, which is an important step.”

Similarly, Erdogan referred to the Turkish-Muslim minority in Greece’s Thrace region as a “friendship bridge between the two communities.”

Earlier, he described the normalization process as beneficial to both countries and the region. “The channels of dialogue are being kept open and we are focusing on the positive agenda,” Erdogan said, adding that they were trying to increase trade volumes from $6 billion to $10 billion.

The propensity for quarrels remains, however. The recent opening of a former Greek Orthodox church in Istanbul for use as a mosque led to Greece accusing Turkey of “insulting the character” of a World Heritage Site.

Turkey, meanwhile, criticized a Greek plan unveiled last month for “marine parks” in parts of the Ionian and Aegean Seas. Ankara said the one-sided declaration was “a step that sabotages the normalization process.”

But such low-level disputes are far removed from relations a few years ago, when energy exploration in the eastern Mediterranean resulted in a naval confrontation and a vow by Erdogan to halt talks with Mitsotakis’ government.

The two countries are also locked in a dispute over Cyprus , divided since 1974 between its ethnic Greek and Turkish populations. For the past seven years, Turkey has rejected a long-standing agreement for a reunified Cyprus under a federal system. Instead, Ankara and the Turkish Cypriot administration, which is only recognized by Turkey, have proposed a two-state solution.

Despite sharp differences over the Israel-Hamas war , Erdogan and Mitsotakis are keen to hold back further instability in the Mediterranean as Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine grinds on.

The recent thaw in relations was partly helped by Greek solidarity after last year’s devastating earthquake in southern Turkey. Erdogan has initiated a broader effort to reengage with Western countries following an election victory last year that saw him extend his two-decade rule by a further five years.

Speaking before the meeting, Greek government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis said that the leaders would review progress in bilateral relations and the agreed upon areas of cooperation.

“Our country seeks to maintain the climate of dialogue with the neighboring country,” he said, adding that “we believe that dialogue is only positive for the two countries.”
