REVIEW: NulaAir 4-in-1 Travel System

A few weeks ago I wrote a post about selecting a travel system or pram . I hope it was clear, that our choice was the NulaAir 4-in- travel system. We’ve been using it for nearly 7 months and it’s time to write a review.

NULAAIR FRAME

18077015_1884312191826354_7397511745101023812_o (1)

The frame is simple, with a contemporary look, that I don’t think will date. This is important if, like us, you plan to use the same travel system for future duplicates. It’s really solid, but light. The finishes of the aluminium, plastic parts and foam handles are flawless. Both the front and rear wheels are easily assembled and just as easily disassembled from the frame. The configuration of the wheels is pretty standard, with the front wheels able to swivel 360 degrees and the rear wheels running straight. As I’ve mentioned before, folding size is important and this frame folds down small enough to fit into the boot of a Mini Cooper, without removing the wheels!

NULAAIR CARRYCOT

18121860_1884312141826359_6312610292686421855_o

To be completely honest, we really haven’t used the carrycot much, while attached to the frame. The most use we’ve had is when trying to get our daughter to nap away from home. I’m not saying it’s a useless attachment, I’m simply refraining from commenting too much on it. All babies and couples are different, so it may be your most useful attachment. I can comment on the product itself though. It stays true to the build quality I’ve come to expect of Nula. All of the parts and fabric are perfect.

IMG_1319

In recent weeks, we found another use for the carrycot…

IMG_4856

We used the carrycot as a “micro playpen” for Ivy. This was when she was on the verge of being able to support herself while sitting.

NULAAIR INFANT CAR SEAT

18076989_1884312138493026_5800662826058047727_o

For us, this has been the most useful attachment to the travel system. Ivy looks so comfortable sitting / sleeping / drooling in it. The seat comes with a cushion insert for your tiny newborn baby to fit nice and snug in the seat. Once the fat rolls start appearing and they get a little taller, you can simply remove the insert and keep using the same seat.

The modularity of the travel system means that the seat can be easily clipped in and out of the stroller, at two easy mounting points. What’s the benefit of this? It’s simple. Your baby is asleep in the in the seat while you’ve been walking around with it clipped into the frame. You get to the car and need to transfer them into the car without waking them up. Quickly unclip, put the seat in the car, strap it down with the seatbelt and off you go! Oh wait, you left the frame behind, don’t drive off without putting it in the boot first, it’s an easier mistake to make than what you may think.

IMG_1103

PRO-TIP: Keep the frame close by while loading the seat into the car. This will ensure that you don’t leave it behind and keep any items currently stored in the travel system from “disappearing”.

IMG_3462

It works in the opposite direction too. Our baby loves sleeping in the car, but you don’t necessarily want them to wake up when you arrive at your destination. The simple clipping system allows for a quick transfer so that you can be out of the car and on the move in a matter of seconds, allowing the little nugget to wake up in their own time, like a little angel.

IMG_1281

NULAAIR STROLLER

18156103_1884312338493006_1984425276840839969_o (1)

Again, the build quality does not allow any room for negative feedback. Ivy is still too young to make use of the stroller, but if it’s anything like her car seat (which I expect it to be), she going to love it, and so will we.

NULA ISOFIX BASE

This is not a necessity, but we feel that it is worth every cent. It’s essentially a semi-permanent fixture, fitted to your car that allows clip in and out functionality for the car seat, in other words, there’s no need to waste precious sleepy seconds trying to strap the seatbelt around the car seat. Although semi-permanent, it’s pretty easy to move from one car to another, we do the move at least twice a week. It clips onto mounting points between the horizontal and vertical (butt and back) seat cushions of your car, which have been an automotive standard for a while now.

OVERALL & CONCLUSION

Something I noticed almost immediately is how easy it is to steer the travel system, most tasks are possible with one hand. I’ve also found this beneficial when rocking Ivy to sleep, the motion requires minimal effort.

7AE1B569-429F-4B6C-AD47-DB0DF7FED491

We are perfectly happy with our purchase, and would highly recommend it to anyone in the market for a new pram or travel system.

Nuna Travel System Review: From One Urban Parent (To-Be) to Another, Consider Your Stroller Search Over

Dana abraham.

Our team is dedicated to finding and telling you more about the web’s best products. If you purchase through our links, we may receive a commission. Our editorial team is independent and only endorses products we believe in.

Choosing a stroller and a carseat as a parent-to-be is a freaking mission. No joke, I think I could write an entire thesis paper on the options for infants and how to select the right one for your lifestyle. As a mom-to-be via adoption, I have spent a little way too much time researching this stuff. After all, in the waiting period of adoption (and I would imagine pregnancy as well), there’s not much else to do. So about a month ago after extensive research I finally decided to take the plunge with Nuna Baby’s PIPA urbn + TRIV next travel system ($1,100) — and quickly found out why the word on the street was that it was the best in its class.

  • Car seat is extremely lightweight (7 lbs)
  • No base needed, making it easy to install the infant car seat in any car
  • The entire travel system has a minimalistic, modern look
  • The TRIV Next folds up nice and compact for small spaces
  • Safety is always top of mind

We don't like

  • The TRIV Next stroller does not convert into a double for multiple children
  • Price point is unmistakably high
  • The PIPA Urbn car seat must be purchased with a travel system, it's not a standalone product

Featured Product

nula air travel system

PIPA urbn + TRIV next Travel System

The nuna kid on the block.

Though the brand has technically been around since 2007, it feels like Nuna has been gaining some serious traction with parents (and parents-to-be) around me lately. Inspired by the “ingenuity of Dutch design,” Nuna believes in excellent craftsmanship, clean lines, and thoughtful solutions in each of their products, which run the entire baby and child gamut. From strollers to car seats to swings, Nuna is a one-stop shop for parents searching for high-performing, safe gear for their kids.

From a safety perspective, Nuna believes in going beyond the world’s minimum standards for safety. To ensure the safety of all of the kiddos and future kiddos that will live in the gear, the brand invests in testing the gear at independent, accredited labs. Beyond this, they use high-quality materials that abide by CPSIA standards (for the US) and EACH and EN71 standards in Europe .

Safety, design, and quality were really important to me in my search for a stroller and car seat, but perhaps one of the things I desired the most was the stamp of approval of parents who have gone before me. Nuna’s gear is designed by parents — meaning they actually get the needs of new parents like me. Beyond this, they try to accommodate different environments and lifestyles with a variety of products, which I really appreciate.

‍ 2-Second, Base-Free Install

In my research of car seats and strollers, I surveyed a few parents and scoured the Internet. I learned that many car seats are compatible with a bunch of different strollers from other brands, meaning you can really mix and match here. Personally, I am so Type A it hurts; for my sanity, I needed my stroller and infant car seat to match. Not only that, I just really had no interest in paying $50+ for an adapter to a car seat I was going to use for only five or six months. All of this led me to looking at Nuna’s travel systems , which are a combination of an infant car seat (for babies anywhere from 4-22 lbs), a “regular” stroller seat (for children up to 50 lbs), and the stroller itself.

I live near downtown Detroit, meaning we take a lot of Ubers and switch around cars a lot. This made Nuna’s baseless car seat (meaning there's no base needed in the vehicle), the PIPA urbn , really appealing to me. How sweet, I thought, that our baby could easily go with us to dinner via Uber and then the next day hop in Grandma’s car without all the fuss of reinstalling or carrying around a base. Sure, I could buy every grandma and grandpa a base, but that gets pricey, and I liked the simplicity the PIPA urbn infant car seat offered. Beyond being easy to get in and out of cars easily, the car seat is just 7 pounds, which in the car seat world, is ultralight.

Our journey to becoming parents is strange, in the sense we could get a call to come get a baby at any point now! No joke, we might only have a few hours' notice that we’re becoming parents. With that in mind, we quickly got to installing the car seat in the car once it arrived. Unpacking was super easy and everything was so nicely pre-assembled. We took the carseat out to the car and, within seconds, installed it using the steel-reinforced rigid latch installation. I thought “2-second install” had to be an exaggeration — until I did it. Sure, I didn’t have a crying baby inside to deal with, but it is actually as simple as pushing it into the metal bars in your car and leveling it.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Nuna USA (@nuna_usa)

Safety and ease-of-use are highlighted by Nuna’s Global Car Seat Advocate. Credit: @nuna_usa

Getting it out, at first, proved to be a little trickier. It took a second for us to find the latch to remove the seat from the metal bars, but once we did, it was also very simple and quick. Another favorite feature of mine is the magnetic clip holders on the sides of the car seat. With my niece, I have learned that I am so awful at strapping babies into car seats because the straps go everywhere; not with this car seat! It also comes with a “Sky Drape” to shield the baby from the sun and create more privacy, plus it's also built-in so there’s no chance you can lose it.

nula air travel system

They See Me Rollin’…

The PIPA Urbn is not sold separately from the TRIV next, which at first worried me. It is a big price tag after all, coming in at $1,100. That being said, it does fall in the luxury stroller category and might make for a great “group gift” on your registry. Paired with the TRIV Next Stroller System , this means you’re purchasing a stroller that’ll support your baby while they’re in the infant car seat (4-22 lbs), as well as up to 50 lbs within a “normal” stroller configuration.

The TRIV next fulfilled all of our criteria, from lasting for multiple children in different stages to looking modern (no '90s baby gear for me, please.) At just 18.4 lbs pounds (without insert, arm bar, or canopy) , the stroller is incredibly lightweight and folds up with just a one-handed pull, no matter which of the 4 configurations you have it in. It stands up on its own when folded (ours is tucked away well in our mudroom) and feels pretty durable to the touch. Beyond that, it is easily adjustable for height, has an easy braking system, and per my husband’s request, all-wheel suspension and large rear wheels that “promise easy maneuverability through varied terrain.” Stay tuned on that one to see what types of terrain my man takes our future babes on *nervous laughter.*

Without a baby in tow yet, we took this puppy around the neighborhood for a test drive. I know that sounds weird, but it was not only to get a good feel for it, but also to help train our puppy dogs to respect the stroller. Overall, it was quite a successful mission – all two humans and two pups approved of our new style of family walks. I think it’ll adapt nicely to our park strolls once our sweet baby is with us!

The Premier Stroller for City ‘Rents

As an urban parent (to be), I’m stoked about our future with this stroller. While we’re excited to soak in baby snuggles, we don’t plan to slow our lives down a whole lot on account of this baby. So iIf you’re looking for a travel system that’s going to keep up with your busy life, consider your search over. The Nuna is it.

Keep your little ones (and your sanity) intact with Nuna Baby here!

Nuna Sena Aire travel cot review

nula air travel system

  • Katie Banks

In a nutshell

A sleek, premium travel cot offering excellent airflow and easy assembly with a centralised pulley system – but it is on the heavier side at just under 10kg

What we tested

  • Highly breathable sides and mattress, easy to assemble and pack down, organic cotton sheet included, stable with skid-proof feet
  • Heavy, higher price point

Showing item 1 of 6

nula air travel system

Part of a collection by Dutch designers, the Nuna Sena Aire is a slick piece of high-quality kit for the top end of the travel cot market. It's one of the easiest travel cots to assemble, with a super nifty centralised pulley system.

With safety in mind, the Nuna Sena Aire also boasts an advanced air design – with a 360° transparent mesh around the crib – which means there’s maximum airflow and you can easily keep an eye on your baby, too. The foldable mattress also has 2 different levels of ventilation with a triple-layered mesh to keep your mind at rest.

Katie used the cot with her 3-month-old son. She tested it on overnight stays at friends’ houses in the UK (pre-Covid).

What were your first impressions of the Nuna Sena Aire?

I was really impressed that the Nuna Sena Aire could be assembled in a matter of seconds after pulling it out of the box, with no tools required. It looks sleek and substantial and the soft grey 'Frost' colour is very restful.

nunasenaaire-before-assemblyrs

What age is it suitable for?

The cot can be used from birth until 15kg. There is also a warning to discontinue using the cot when your child is able to climb out.

How does it work as a crib and cot?

The travel cot works well as 2 separate products. The crib is perfect for my 3-month-old son and would definitely suit newborn babies. The deeper cot is ideal for toddlers and gives parents the additional opportunity to use it as a play pen.

Nunasena-aire-baby-in-cotrs

How does it compare to other travel cots?

In comparison to the other popular travel cot brands, the Nuna Sena Aire is at the top end of the market price-wise at £180. The cheapest travel cots, such as the Red Kite Sleeptight Travel Cot , start at around £30 (available on Amazon ). But, it's worth remembering that with the Nuna Sena Aire you are buying a substantial piece of kit which is reflected in the quality – for example it has extensive padding and it’s raised off the ground with wide, skid-proof feet.

Keep in mind that the crib weighs just under 10kg, making it one of the heaviest compared to its competitors – the Littlelife Featherlite Travel Cot weighs just 3kg for example.

Most tend to sit in the 6-8kg weight range, such as the the BabyBjörn Travel Cot Light (£199.94 on Amazon ) which weighs 6kg. I have used the BabyBjorn Travel Cot Light and I find the Nuna Sena Aire easier to assemble as it has a centralised pulley system, whereas with the BabyBjorn you have to assemble all the legs individually. Also, the BabyBjorn isn’t as raised up from the ground.

Nuna-sena-aire-angle-newrs

How easy is it to see your baby when they’re in the Nuna Sena Aire?

It’s very easy to see my baby from every side, thanks to the grey mesh on all sides of the travel cot.

nuna-sena-air-prod-babyrs

How easy is it to access your baby in the cot?

The cot is simple to access as both a crib and cot, and it offers a wide, comfortable space for my baby to sleep in.

How portable is the Nuna Sena Aire?

The cot is easy to put away by pulling up on the central hub and folding it away into a travel bag, which is included. I have also moved the cot around my house when it was fully assembled.

As the product is nearly 10kg, I think I would struggle to carry it over long distances as I’m quite small. Many customer reviews on Very and John Lewis were mainly written by grandparents, who kept the cot assembled for when their grandchildren visit.

Nuna-senafold-1-and-2rs

How do you fold/unfold it?

To unfold the travel cot, you pull on the short sides of the frame and reach through the bassinet to push down on the central hub at the bottom of the travel cot.

The crib is attached by 4 clips in the corners of the travel cot and it is easy to convert from cot to crib.

Nunasenaaireinside-without-mattressrs

How large and heavy is the travel cot when folded and unfolded?

The cot folds into an easy size to carry, although I do find it quite heavy. The unfolded cot is sizeable but can still be lifted. You can also drag it on its wide skid-proof feet without damaging any wooden floors!

nuna-sena-fold-3-and-4rs

How breathable is the mattress?

The foldable mattress has 2 different levels of ventilation with a triple-layered mesh, so it’s very breathable. You can even remove the plastic boards in the mattress to hand-wash it if you have an accident which is handy.

nuna-sena-mattress-insidesrs

How durable does the Nuna Sena Aire feel?

The cot feels very sturdy and durable with an 8-leg frame. The material is thick and excellent quality. It definitely feels like a good investment that you could get years of use from, and it also has a free 2-year guarantee.

How easy is the Nuna Sena Aire to clean?

It's quite simple to clean. Nuna recommends spot-cleaning the cot with a sponge and mild soapy water as the covering material is not removable. You can remove the plastic boards in the mattress to hand-wash that.

What’s in the box?

  • The cot/crib
  • Organic cotton sheet for the mattress
  • Instruction manual

What would you have wanted to know before buying the cot?

I would have wanted to know the weight of the product as it is on the heavier side. It’s something to consider if you’re looking to carry the cot as hand luggage.

What's your favourite design element?

The ability to assemble the cot using one hand is particularly brilliant. There is absolutely no stress involved. Like many new mums, I have suffered from problems with my back and I love being able to use the crib as I don’t have to reach down as far to pick up my baby.

nuna-sena-aire-mum-and-babyrs

Does it offer good value for money?

The crib is priced at £180 from retailers such as John Lewis. Although it is one of the more expensive travel products on the market, you get amazing quality, design and peace of mind, so I feel it’s worth the investment. It’ll also take you through from newborn to toddler.

Are there any additional items you can buy?

As an add-on, Nuna offers a changer accessory (£50) so you can change your little one’s nappy on the cot and the brand also sells insect nets (£25) .

Where can I buy the Nuna Sena Aire?

It's available from Nuna , John Lewis and Very .

MadeForMums verdict:

The Nuna Sena Aire travel cot is a high-end, luxurious product – well worth the investment if you are a regular traveller. Enabling you to have a cot, crib and play area for your child, it is also extremely easy to set up and fold away, with a sleek and safe design. I found the cot to be quite heavy, which is its only disadvantage, but overall it is an impressive piece of kit.

They increase the price, it's better to buy directly from Nuna

I love the Nuna Pipa RX and Mixx Next I ordered. The caviar color and material look and feel luxurious!

Purchased for my daughter. It is a quality system, exceeded my expectations. She was thrilled with the stroller and car seat system

It fit every need we wanted. I wanted to go with a bigger stroller so I can pack all babies needs comfortably. The stroller feels comfortable, drives so nicely. Love the mesh option for summer, living in Arizona that is the best future for our baby. Pushes through all types of terrains nicely compared to other strollers I’ve had in the past. Car seat is amazing! Feels soft and comfortable. Love how much shade it provides. Traveling without the base is so easy. And the best part it’s so light to carry, my back thanks you Nina. Worth every penny!

Did our research and ended up buying all of Nuna's products. Definitely will recommend.

Completely obsessed!! Love our travel system and can't wait to use it when baby is born in December! We specifically loved that you have shared reviews/testimonies from clients who have been in accidents and how your products have saved their babies/children's lives. Those testimonials are what sold the product for us. No other travel system that we looked at had real life feedback.

Absolutely love our Noola Elite pram and car seat, easy and light to use and with all the best finishes. Would highly recommend

We are super happy with our very stylish Noola Elite travel system. It’s so handy that the car seat pops straight into the legs as you can leave bub sleeping and transition really easily. Only thing I wish we’d known is that not all cars fit the isofix base. We have a hilux and you have to buy an additional part to install the isofix (this may be common knowledge but as a FTM I had no idea). So the isofix base has been a complete waste of money for us as we didn’t want to spend an additional R1300 on the part that makes it possible to install in our car we haven’t even opened the box with the isofix in it. Other than that we are happy with our products!

Adorable and so stylish _love this so much #SunnyDaysOnTheBeach ♥

Earthquake snarls air and train travel in the New York City area

By Megan Cerullo

Edited By Aimee Picchi

Updated on: April 5, 2024 / 4:36 PM EDT / CBS News

An  earthquake  centered in New Jersey and felt across the New York City region on Friday disrupted air and rail travel, with ground stoppages at airports in the New York City area and delays in train service.

Travel operations were momentarily halted Friday morning with ground stoppages at John F. Kennedy International Airport in Queens and at Newark Liberty International Airport in Newark, New Jersey, with crews working to resume normal air traffic operations. By early afternoon, the ground stoppage at JFK had been lifted.

Arriving and departing flights in Newark also resumed in the afternoon, but delays averaged roughly two hours,  according  to the Federal Aviation Administration.

The earthquake, which occurred roughly 10:20 a.m. Eastern time, had either a 4.7 or 4.8 magnitude and was centered near Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, 40 miles west of New York City,  according to the United States Geological Survey.

Newark airport is experiencing average departure delays of 43 minutes, according to flight tracking website FlightAware. Inbound aircraft that are already airborne are delayed by about an hour. Inbound flights that have not yet taken off are being held until 12:30 p.m., according to the site.

Flights in and out of LaGuardia airport in Queens were also delayed, likely in order for airport staff to check for damage to the airport and runways and clear away any debris.

The ground stoppages and delays are not expected to last long.

Additionally, New Jersey Transit said it's experiencing up to 20-minute delays across its entire rail service system, in both directions. NJ Transit said it's inspecting a bridge for damage to ensure train travel is safe.

You Don’t Need to Freak Out About Boeing Planes (but Boeing Sure Does)

A photograph of a plane flying far overhead near two white contrails.

By Zeynep Tufekci

Opinion Columnist

“Ah, it’s a Boeing Max,” I exclaimed to my travel companions after we boarded our plane a few weeks ago. I looked to see if we were seated next to a hidden door plug panel like the one that blew out on Alaska Airlines Flight 1282 in January. We weren’t, but joining a trend on social media , we cracked a few jokes at Boeing’s expense: “Maybe they can charge extra, saying it’s potentially an even bigger window seat.”

The F.B.I. recently informed the passengers on that ill-fated Alaska Airlines flight that they might have been crime victims . The agency hasn’t explained why, but Boeing has told the Senate that it cannot find documentation of exactly how the door plug was removed and reinstalled, even though the company acknowledged it is supposed to have kept such records. Facing all this, the company announced last week that it was replacing its chief executive . But the bad news wasn’t over: On Thursday a New York Times investigation reported a disturbing pattern of sloppy safety procedures and dangerous cost cutting. One expert who had spent more than a decade at Boeing told The Times, “The theme is shortcuts everywhere — not doing the job right.”

Is it any wonder that some travelers are trying to avoid Boeing planes? Kayak, the travel booking site, noticed an uptick in the number of people trying to weed them out ; it recently made that search filter more prominent and even added an option to specifically avoid certain models.

Boeing’s problems, great as they are, are just one reason that consumers might be wary of taking flight. United Airlines now also faces scrutiny for a series of safety incidents, although many experts say the issues there do not appear to be systemic. The biggest danger of all may be understaffing in air traffic control and overstuffed runways , which lead to far too many near misses.

Personally, I am not worried about flying, and other than cracking some ill-advised jokes, I have not changed my behavior. That’s why I hadn’t bothered to check whether I’d be flying on a Boeing Max or any type of Boeing plane until after I boarded.

The trajectory of Boeing as a corporation, however, is another matter. It’s going to take a lot more than a shuffle at the top to fix that company’s problems. But the fact that Boeing managed to cut as many corners as it did is testament to the layers and layers of checks, redundancies and training that have been built into the aviation industry. Aviation safety is so robust because we made it so.

Two seemingly contradictory things are both true: U.S. commercial passenger airlines have gone an astonishing 15 years without a single death from a crash. And there is a huge safety crisis in commercial aviation that we urgently need to fix.

Commercial aviation is a complex system involving many dynamics — technology, engineering, corporate culture, regulation, weather, human factors, politics and more.

It’s extremely hard to predict what will emerge from so many different things interacting all at once — an example of the so-called butterfly effect, in which a tiny insect flapping its wings leads to major weather events on the other side of the world. And though testing every part of the system on its own is necessary, it’s insufficient, since it’s the interaction of many moving parts that creates those hard-to-foresee problems. Solving equations won’t be enough to manage it all because such systems defy easy calculations.

We do, however, have methods to manage complex and safety-critical systems, and if done right, they can work very well.

Perhaps the most important measure is redundancy, the layering of precautions. Since even a minor failure could set off a catastrophic chain of events, it’s important to shore up everything. That’s why many plane parts have duplicates or backups and much of planes’ production and maintenance is subject to inspections by multiple people.

Redundancy, however, while great for safety, is expensive.

The first Boeing 737 Max crash occurred in Indonesia in 2018 . Everyone on board was killed. The next was in 2019 in Ethiopia. There were no survivors of that flight, either. After that, the planes — which had been flying globally for more than a year — were grounded by the F.A.A. (About 387 of them had been delivered at that time, and 400 or so more were in production.)

The public later learned Boeing had added a new software system to the planes to help keep them stable. Because the system made the planes behave more like older Boeing models that pilots were already familiar with, the company got permission from the F.A.A. to avoid retraining pilots on the new planes (a cost savings for the airlines that bought them) or even telling pilots about it.

Those two flights proved the danger of that approach. The new system relied on a single sensor, even though the planes were equipped with two. When that sensor failed, pilots lacked the information to diagnose the problem and avoid disaster. Boeing’s actions were a violation of those core tenets of aviation of building in redundancy and understanding how complicated interactions can create problems that no one predicted.

Given the impossibility of testing for every outcome, keeping complex systems safe also depends on another crucial signal: near misses. If something goes wrong but disaster is averted, the correct response should not be a “whew” and back to normal. It should be caution and investigation.

The Times investigation shows how alarmingly different Boeing’s approach was.

The Boeing plane that crashed in Indonesia experienced the exact same problem with the new stabilization system the day before. But on that flight there happened to be a third pilot, riding off duty in the back of the cockpit . When things went haywire, he was able to suggest the correct sequence of actions and saved the day. Had Boeing updated pilots about the system, would the passengers on the airplane’s next flight have landed safely? We’ll never know.

That third pilot — in that case, present purely by luck — was an example of how redundancy can save lives. So is a co-pilot. Planes fly on autopilot all the time and can even land on their own. Still, regulations require a second person in the cockpit for many types of passenger flights not just to handle things in the extremely rare event that the primary pilot gets sick or dies midflight but also to help manage emergencies and equipment failures . It’s the same reason that planes have more engines, more tires and more ways to extend the landing gear than they need for any individual flight, just in case one of those things fails, as has happened many times.

An extra layer of safety helped avert the Alaska Airlines blowout from turning into a catastrophe: Because the incident occurred so soon after takeoff, all the passengers were still required to wear their seatbelts.

Pilots even do walk-arounds of their planes just before takeoff to conduct final visual inspections. Commercial aviation works because of the principle of trust nothing and check everything.

It’s hard to escape the conclusion that those at the company who took all those shortcuts figured the system, with all its redundancies, would save them. But that’s a gamble. Eventually, two or three or four rare mishaps will align.

A Boeing representative told me that the company was taking responsibility and working to improve quality. But we need to see action, not promises.

So why should anyone still fly on Boeing’s planes? Or fly at all? Because the statistics still show that commercial aviation is miraculously safe, far more so than all the alternative ways of traveling.

While I don’t check for who manufactured the planes I fly on, I do keep my seatbelt on even when the captain says I don’t have to. Other than that, I’m as comfortable as possible while flying. I know that on balance, air travel is a well-regulated system staffed by highly trained crews with layers and layers of safety precautions and a dedication to learning from accidents. Let’s keep it that way.

An earlier version of this article misidentified the agency that informed passengers of Alaska Airlines Flight 1282 that they might have been crime victims. It is the F.B.I., not the Federal Aviation Administration.

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. In Transit: Notes from the Underground

Jun 06 2018.

Spend some time in one of Moscow’s finest museums.

Subterranean commuting might not be anyone’s idea of a good time, but even in a city packing the war-games treasures and priceless bejeweled eggs of the Kremlin Armoury and the colossal Soviet pavilions of the VDNKh , the Metro holds up as one of Moscow’s finest museums. Just avoid rush hour.

The Metro is stunning and provides an unrivaled insight into the city’s psyche, past and present, but it also happens to be the best way to get around. Moscow has Uber, and the Russian version called Yandex Taxi , but also some nasty traffic. Metro trains come around every 90 seconds or so, at a more than 99 percent on-time rate. It’s also reasonably priced, with a single ride at 55 cents (and cheaper in bulk). From history to tickets to rules — official and not — here’s what you need to know to get started.

A Brief Introduction Buying Tickets Know Before You Go (Down) Rules An Easy Tour

A Brief Introduction

Moscow’s Metro was a long time coming. Plans for rapid transit to relieve the city’s beleaguered tram system date back to the Imperial era, but a couple of wars and a revolution held up its development. Stalin revived it as part of his grand plan to modernize the Soviet Union in the 1920s and 30s. The first lines and tunnels were constructed with help from engineers from the London Underground, although Stalin’s secret police decided that they had learned too much about Moscow’s layout and had them arrested on espionage charges and deported.

The beauty of its stations (if not its trains) is well-documented, and certainly no accident. In its illustrious first phases and particularly after the Second World War, the greatest architects of Soviet era were recruited to create gleaming temples celebrating the Revolution, the USSR, and the war triumph. No two stations are exactly alike, and each of the classic showpieces has a theme. There are world-famous shrines to Futurist architecture, a celebration of electricity, tributes to individuals and regions of the former Soviet Union. Each marble slab, mosaic tile, or light fixture was placed with intent, all in service to a station’s aesthetic; each element, f rom the smallest brass ear of corn to a large blood-spattered sword on a World War II mural, is an essential part of the whole.

nula air travel system

The Metro is a monument to the Soviet propaganda project it was intended to be when it opened in 1935 with the slogan “Building a Palace for the People”. It brought the grand interiors of Imperial Russia to ordinary Muscovites, celebrated the Soviet Union’s past achievements while promising its citizens a bright Soviet future, and of course, it was a show-piece for the world to witness the might and sophistication of life in the Soviet Union.

It may be a museum, but it’s no relic. U p to nine million people use it daily, more than the London Underground and New York Subway combined. (Along with, at one time, about 20 stray dogs that learned to commute on the Metro.)

In its 80+ year history, the Metro has expanded in phases and fits and starts, in step with the fortunes of Moscow and Russia. Now, partly in preparation for the World Cup 2018, it’s also modernizing. New trains allow passengers to walk the entire length of the train without having to change carriages. The system is becoming more visitor-friendly. (There are helpful stickers on the floor marking out the best selfie spots .) But there’s a price to modernity: it’s phasing out one of its beloved institutions, the escalator attendants. Often they are middle-aged or elderly women—“ escalator grandmas ” in news accounts—who have held the post for decades, sitting in their tiny kiosks, scolding commuters for bad escalator etiquette or even bad posture, or telling jokes . They are slated to be replaced, when at all, by members of the escalator maintenance staff.

For all its achievements, the Metro lags behind Moscow’s above-ground growth, as Russia’s capital sprawls ever outwards, generating some of the world’s worst traffic jams . But since 2011, the Metro has been in the middle of an ambitious and long-overdue enlargement; 60 new stations are opening by 2020. If all goes to plan, the 2011-2020 period will have brought 125 miles of new tracks and over 100 new stations — a 40 percent increase — the fastest and largest expansion phase in any period in the Metro’s history.

Buying Tickets

  • Ticket machines have a button to switch to English.
  • You can buy specific numbers of rides: 1, 2, 5, 11, 20, or 60. Hold up fingers to show how many rides you want to buy.
  • There is also a 90-minute ticket , which gets you 1 trip on the metro plus an unlimited number of transfers on other transport (bus, tram, etc) within 90 minutes.
  • Or, you can buy day tickets with unlimited rides: one day (218₽/ US$4), three days (415₽/US$7) or seven days (830₽/US$15). Check the rates here to stay up-to-date.
  • If you’re going to be using the Metro regularly over a few days, it’s worth getting a Troika card , a contactless, refillable card you can use on all public transport. Using the Metro is cheaper with one of these: a single ride is 36₽, not 55₽. Buy them and refill them in the Metro stations, and they’re valid for 5 years, so you can keep it for next time. Or, if you have a lot of cash left on it when you leave, you can get it refunded at the Metro Service Centers at Ulitsa 1905 Goda, 25 or at Staraya Basmannaya 20, Building 1.
  • You can also buy silicone bracelets and keychains with built-in transport chips that you can use as a Troika card. (A Moscow Metro Fitbit!) So far, you can only get these at the Pushkinskaya metro station Live Helpdesk and souvenir shops in the Mayakovskaya and Trubnaya metro stations. The fare is the same as for the Troika card.
  • You can also use Apple Pay and Samsung Pay.

Rules, spoken and unspoken

No smoking, no drinking, no filming, no littering. Photography is allowed, although it used to be banned.

Stand to the right on the escalator. Break this rule and you risk the wrath of the legendary escalator attendants. (No shenanigans on the escalators in general.)

Get out of the way. Find an empty corner to hide in when you get off a train and need to stare at your phone. Watch out getting out of the train in general; when your train doors open, people tend to appear from nowhere or from behind ornate marble columns, walking full-speed.

Always offer your seat to elderly ladies (what are you, a monster?).

An Easy Tour

This is no Metro Marathon ( 199 stations in 20 hours ). It’s an easy tour, taking in most—though not all—of the notable stations, the bulk of it going clockwise along the Circle line, with a couple of short detours. These stations are within minutes of one another, and the whole tour should take about 1-2 hours.

Start at Mayakovskaya Metro station , at the corner of Tverskaya and Garden Ring,  Triumfalnaya Square, Moskva, Russia, 125047.

1. Mayakovskaya.  Named for Russian Futurist Movement poet Vladimir Mayakovsky and an attempt to bring to life the future he imagined in his poems. (The Futurist Movement, natch, was all about a rejecting the past and celebrating all things speed, industry, modern machines, youth, modernity.) The result: an Art Deco masterpiece that won the National Grand Prix for architecture at the New York World’s Fair in 1939. It’s all smooth, rounded shine and light, and gentle arches supported by columns of dark pink marble and stainless aircraft steel. Each of its 34 ceiling niches has a mosaic. During World War II, the station was used as an air-raid shelter and, at one point, a bunker for Stalin. He gave a subdued but rousing speech here in Nov. 6, 1941 as the Nazis bombed the city above.

Take the 3/Green line one station to:

2. Belorusskaya. Opened in 1952, named after the connected Belarussky Rail Terminal, which runs trains between Moscow and Belarus. This is a light marble affair with a white, cake-like ceiling, lined with Belorussian patterns and 12 Florentine ceiling mosaics depicting life in Belarussia when it was built.

Transfer onto the 1/Brown line. Then, one stop (clockwise) t o:

3. Novoslobodskaya.  This station was designed around the stained-glass panels, which were made in Latvia, because Alexey Dushkin, the Soviet starchitect who dreamed it up (and also designed Mayakovskaya station) couldn’t find the glass and craft locally. The stained glass is the same used for Riga’s Cathedral, and the panels feature plants, flowers, members of the Soviet intelligentsia (musician, artist, architect) and geometric shapes.

Go two stops east on the 1/Circle line to:

4. Komsomolskaya. Named after the Komsomol, or the Young Communist League, this might just be peak Stalin Metro style. Underneath the hub for three regional railways, it was intended to be a grand gateway to Moscow and is today its busiest station. It has chandeliers; a yellow ceiling with Baroque embellishments; and in the main hall, a colossal red star overlaid on golden, shimmering tiles. Designer Alexey Shchusev designed it as an homage to the speech Stalin gave at Red Square on Nov. 7, 1941, in which he invoked Russia’s illustrious military leaders as a pep talk to Soviet soldiers through the first catastrophic year of the war.   The station’s eight large mosaics are of the leaders referenced in the speech, such as Alexander Nevsky, a 13th-century prince and military commander who bested German and Swedish invading armies.

One more stop clockwise to Kurskaya station,  and change onto the 3/Blue  line, and go one stop to:

5. Baumanskaya.   Opened in 1944. Named for the Bolshevik Revolutionary Nikolai Bauman , whose monument and namesake district are aboveground here. Though he seemed like a nasty piece of work (he apparently once publicly mocked a woman he had impregnated, who later hung herself), he became a Revolutionary martyr when he was killed in 1905 in a skirmish with a monarchist, who hit him on the head with part of a steel pipe. The station is in Art Deco style with atmospherically dim lighting, and a series of bronze sculptures of soldiers and homefront heroes during the War. At one end, there is a large mosaic portrait of Lenin.

Stay on that train direction one more east to:

6. Elektrozavodskaya. As you may have guessed from the name, this station is the Metro’s tribute to all thing electrical, built in 1944 and named after a nearby lightbulb factory. It has marble bas-relief sculptures of important figures in electrical engineering, and others illustrating the Soviet Union’s war-time struggles at home. The ceiling’s recurring rows of circular lamps give the station’s main tunnel a comforting glow, and a pleasing visual effect.

Double back two stops to Kurskaya station , and change back to the 1/Circle line. Sit tight for six stations to:

7. Kiyevskaya. This was the last station on the Circle line to be built, in 1954, completed under Nikita Khrushchev’ s guidance, as a tribute to his homeland, Ukraine. Its three large station halls feature images celebrating Ukraine’s contributions to the Soviet Union and Russo-Ukrainian unity, depicting musicians, textile-working, soldiers, farmers. (One hall has frescoes, one mosaics, and the third murals.) Shortly after it was completed, Khrushchev condemned the architectural excesses and unnecessary luxury of the Stalin era, which ushered in an epoch of more austere Metro stations. According to the legend at least, he timed the policy in part to ensure no Metro station built after could outshine Kiyevskaya.

Change to the 3/Blue line and go one stop west.

8. Park Pobedy. This is the deepest station on the Metro, with one of the world’s longest escalators, at 413 feet. If you stand still, the escalator ride to the surface takes about three minutes .) Opened in 2003 at Victory Park, the station celebrates two of Russia’s great military victories. Each end has a mural by Georgian artist Zurab Tsereteli, who also designed the “ Good Defeats Evil ” statue at the UN headquarters in New York. One mural depicts the Russian generals’ victory over the French in 1812 and the other, the German surrender of 1945. The latter is particularly striking; equal parts dramatic, triumphant, and gruesome. To the side, Red Army soldiers trample Nazi flags, and if you look closely there’s some blood spatter among the detail. Still, the biggest impressions here are the marble shine of the chessboard floor pattern and the pleasingly geometric effect if you view from one end to the other.

nula air travel system

Keep going one more stop west to:

9. Slavyansky Bulvar.  One of the Metro’s youngest stations, it opened in 2008. With far higher ceilings than many other stations—which tend to have covered central tunnels on the platforms—it has an “open-air” feel (or as close to it as you can get, one hundred feet under). It’s an homage to French architect Hector Guimard, he of the Art Nouveau entrances for the Paris M é tro, and that’s precisely what this looks like: A Moscow homage to the Paris M é tro, with an additional forest theme. A Cyrillic twist on Guimard’s Metro-style lettering over the benches, furnished with t rees and branch motifs, including creeping vines as towering lamp-posts.

nula air travel system

Stay on the 3/Blue line and double back four stations to:

10. Arbatskaya. Its first iteration, Arbatskaya-Smolenskaya station, was damaged by German bombs in 1941. It was rebuilt in 1953, and designed to double as a bomb shelter in the event of nuclear war, although unusually for stations built in the post-war phase, this one doesn’t have a war theme. It may also be one of the system’s most elegant: Baroque, but toned down a little, with red marble floors and white ceilings with gilded bronze c handeliers.

nula air travel system

Jump back on the 3/Blue line  in the same direction and take it one more stop:

11. Ploshchad Revolyutsii (Revolution Square). Opened in 1938, and serving Red Square and the Kremlin . Its renowned central hall has marble columns flanked by 76 bronze statues of Soviet heroes: soldiers, students, farmers, athletes, writers, parents. Some of these statues’ appendages have a yellow sheen from decades of Moscow’s commuters rubbing them for good luck. Among the most popular for a superstitious walk-by rub: the snout of a frontier guard’s dog, a soldier’s gun (where the touch of millions of human hands have tapered the gun barrel into a fine, pointy blade), a baby’s foot, and a woman’s knee. (A brass rooster also sports the telltale gold sheen, though I am told that rubbing the rooster is thought to bring bad luck. )

Now take the escalator up, and get some fresh air.
