Minecraft: The Exhibition Brings Minecraft to Life and Takes It on Tour

Minecraft: The Exhibition is a new live experience that brings Minecraft to life and will be heading out on a world tour.

Minecraft has spread across all forms of media. From being the world’s biggest-selling game, the Microsoft-owned property is also come to books, comics, TV, and movies. Now, Microsoft is taking Minecraft on the road with a live event call Minecraft: The Exhibition.

According to the company, Minecraft: The Exhibition will be a rolling live tour that will extend over multiple years. It got underway on February 18 at the Liberty Science Center in Jersey City .

As the name suggests, the event is an exhibit of everything Minecraft covering 6,000 sq.ft. It has multimedia stands that provide interactive content for visitors to enjoy. For example, life size characters from the game, such as animals and unique characters like the Creeper.

There will also be stands that host game stations. This will allow people to paly Minecraft. Of course, builds are a major part of the Minecraft experience, so the exhibition will highlight some of the best builds ever on the platform. There will be show in time-lapse video from first block to last.

Other individual build will be biomes and dioramas, alongside a crafting table where visitors can create objects using cards representing in-game materials.

Microsoft’s goal here is to bring the world of Minecraft into the real world, and some of the exhibition will focus on learning. In collaboration with Minecraft for Education and the Museum of Popular Culture, Mojang will provide learning exhibits at the event.

Minecraft: The Exhibition will be at the Liberty Science Center until September 5 before starting its tour to other cities.

Minecraft Exhibition World Tour Kicks Off at Liberty Science Center

The best-selling video game of all time is going on a several-years-long world tour, and it’s starting right here in Jersey, at the Liberty Science Center.

Minecraft will celebrate over a decade of success with this new traveling exhibition, aptly titled Minecraft: The Exhibition , which makes its debut  at LSC in Jersey City on February 18.

Billed as a 6,000-square-foot “multimedia experience designed for players and non-players of all ages,” the exhibition allows visitors to step inside the three-dimensional world of Minecraft. Fans can immerse themselves in the game’s blocky scenes while surrounded by 15 life-size Minecraft characters, or “mobs,” including the explosive Creeper, Steve, Enderman and Zombie. Those who are unfamiliar with Minecraft can learn how to play and build their own worlds at the exhibit’s gaming stations. A crafting table lets players use tiles that represent materials from the game—such as wood, iron, and obsidian—to build their own objects and tools.

The exhibition also features films detailing Minecraft’s history.

Unlike other games, Minecraft does not have a plot or objectives. Rather, it is about creativity and exploration of an open world. Players can build and roam as they please, making the game’s exhibition a welcome addition at the 300,000-square-foot Liberty Science Center— where almost everything is interactive .

“What I love about Minecraft is that it has inspired a generation of creative thinkers, while teaching engineering, chemistry, computer science, and other science and math-related skills, as well as collaboration and community-building,” Liberty Science Center President and CEO Paul Hoffman said in a statement. “We are super excited to be the first stop on the exhibition’s world tour, and we invite fans and newcomers to join us to celebrate the game’s international community and popularity—while getting a little STEM education in the process.”

The exhibition, designed as a collaboration between Seattle’s Museum of Pop Culture and Swedish game developer Mojang, took over four years to build. It was initially meant to mark the 10th anniversary of the game’s public debut in 2009. Minecraft has since sold more than 238 million copies while garnering over 140 million monthly active users.

It will remain at Liberty Science Center—which was recently named one of  New Jersey Monthly ‘s 52 Things You Must Do in New Jersey—through September before making its way to other U.S. cities and Europe. Tickets at Liberty Science Center can be reserved at LSC.org.

HUDSON COUNTY, NJ — It's the best-selling video game in history, and now the traveling Minecraft exhibit has made its first stop in a world tour: at Liberty Science Center in Hudson County, NJ.

The 6,000-square-foot interactive exhibit opened Friday at the popular Science Center, which is reachable by car, light rail, and ferry in Jersey City.

The exhibit "Minecraft: The Exhibition" was designed to mark the 10th anniversary of the game’s public debut in 2009, said a museum spokeswoman.

The game — about placing blocks and going on adventures — has sold more than 238 million copies and has 140 million monthly active users.

Those visiting the exhibit will get to enjoy craft tables for building, as well as movies on history of the game and much more.

"Visitors — fans and non-fans alike — will appreciate the day-to-night lighting cycle, dynamic audio effects, and gallery score, all bringing the Minecraft universe to life," said a spokesperson.

The exhibition includes 15 life-size Minecraft characters. It also features several dioramas featuring Minecraft biomes, giant trees, flying overhead Phantoms, scrambling chickens, and baby pandas playing in a bamboo forest.

Even those who have not yet played can learn skills and moves at game stations inside the gallery, then start building their own worlds.

Visitors can also play the game or watch films about its history.

At a crafting table, players can build with tiles that represent materials from the game.

The Minecraft exhibit runs through September.

Liberty Science Center is also running other exhibits at the same time, and holds periodic events including LSC After Dark for adults. The 30,000-square-foot center is located on the Jersey bank of the Hudson River, near the Statue of Liberty.

After some fierce dragon-taming at the Isle of Berk , it’s time for our Universal New Year’s Celebration to make a detour into the in-game Universal Studios Event*. I hope you’ve canceled all your other plans, because for the next four days, we have a blocky version of Universal Studios Hollywood’s world-famous Studio Tour all to ourselves ! You heard that right. This is your ticket to go behind the scenes of some of your favorite movies and TV shows in a unique Minecraft map. So strap in, and get ready for plot twists, movie magic, aaaaand... action!

Hold up! What is a Minecraft in-game event?

If this is your first live event, you’re in for a treat! Once in a blocky moon, we decide to throw a big in-game party to celebrate you, our community. At this live server event, thousands of Minecraft players across the world come together to play a themed map! This server only exists for a few days, and during that time you get to explore a new world, take on challenges with other players, and even pick up gifts for free*. 

The Universal Studios Event 

From today, you can spawn into a world inspired by Universal Studios Hollywood’s signature attraction, the world-famous Studio Tour! This in-game adventure will take you through iconic sets inspired by some of your favorite movies and TV shows , but also behind-the-scenes to see how they’re made and meet some of the characters. 

Usually, you’re not allowed to touch props on studio tours, but on this one, you can. There are plenty of quests and mini-games to take on , like the rooftop parkour challenge at New York Street. And you’re apparently not supposed to go swimming where they’ve seen the shark from JAWS , but I won’t tell if you don’t? If things go wrong, we can always say it’s a blooper.

After the tour you can swing by Shrek’s swamp inspired by DreamWorks Animation’s Shrek to join him and Donkey on their adventures. That reminds me! There are free in-game Character Creator items, like some ogre ears(!), dropping every day until January 8 so make sure to log in and claim yours.

Join this blockbuster bonanza via Minecraft: Bedrock Edition from December 19, 10am PST to December 22, 4pm PST . If you’re not on Pacific Time – there's a list of handy time conversions at the bottom of this article!

How to join the virtual live event

Join the Universal Studios Event by clicking the dedicated button on the main screen in Minecraft: Bedrock Edition. The server will be live from December 19 10am PST until December 22 4pm PST – plenty of time to practice your Hollywood smile! 

Please note the event won’t be available in other versions of Minecraft so make sure you are launching Minecraft: Bedrock Edition. You’ll also need an internet connection to take part in the event, which means that you must have a subscription that includes online play on consoles, like Xbox Live Gold/Game Pass, PlayStation Plus, or Nintendo Switch Online. To join from a child account, make sure that server play is enabled in the account’s settings; this is turned off by default.

Minecraft Exhibition launches world tour at the Liberty Science Center in New Jersey

It looks like Minecraft has finally hit the big time by taking its act on the road. The bestselling videogame of all time kicked off what will be a years-long world tour on February 18th at the Liberty Science Center in Jersey City with Minecraft: The Exhibition.

What exactly is Minecraft Exhibition, you may be asking? It is a massive 6,000 sq.ft. multimedia experience featuring an entire gallery of interactive content including life-size models of characters from the game such as the Creeper and the Enderman, as well as game stations that allow those who haven’t yet tried the game to do so. The exhibit also displays time-lapse videos of some of the most amazing builds from expert Minecraft players, in addition to dioramas of Minecraft’s biomes and a crafting table where users can use cards representing in-game building materials to create objects.

In short, the exhibit is the game brought to physical life, and is a great example of experiential learning. It was created through a partnership between Mojang Studios and the Museum of Popular Culture. Minecraft Exhibition will be at LSC through September 5th before moving on to other cities. It is not to be confused with a similar exhibit which was presented by the MoPOP in Seattle a few years back.
