After a rain-shortened first night, Luke Combs makes a splash at Gillette

Luke Combs performs at Gillette Stadium Saturday in the second of his two weekend concerts there.

FOXBOROUGH — Is Luke Combs an unlikely country superstar? According to the short video that preceded his arrival on Gillette Stadium’s stage Saturday, he is: The North Carolina native is a regular guy who was told by many people in Nashville that he didn’t fit the marquee mold. But when he opens his mouth to sing, all bets are off — and his show on Saturday proved that the current Country Music Association Entertainer of the Year can, in fact, light up the biggest stages.

Combs played his second Gillette show of the weekend on Saturday; Friday night’s concert had been cut short by torrential storms, and Combs seemed determined to put on as full of a set as he could for its follow-up. Over two-plus hours, the singer-songwriter and his backing band cycled through about two dozen songs, with Combs contextualizing some while walking around the vast stage, blue party cup in hand.

Combs’s first album only came out in 2017, but he’s already released a slew of country-radio-ready cuts that thrilled Saturday night’s audience into singalongs and hoisted phones. As a songwriter, he specializes in hooky, straightforward pop-country songs that are elevated by their detail-studded lyrics, which remain kindhearted even when they’re dealing with endings like the wistful “Going, Going, Gone” and the dust-off-the-boots jam “She Got the Best of Me.” Perhaps unsurprisingly, he has a particular talent for writing melting-heart love songs, like the domestic-bliss portrait “Beautiful Crazy,” that derive extra emotion from the way he adds a touch of syrup to his voice.

Fans react as Luke Combs performs at Gillette Stadium Saturday.

Combs is enjoying some pop-crossover fame through his cover of Tracy Chapman’s 1988 edge-dweller chronicle “Fast Car,” which is currently at No. 2 on the Hot 100. Before playing it, he noted that the track had been one of his favorites since childhood — he was born two years after it came out — and saluted Chapman. While the recorded version, which appears on his most recent album “Gettin’ Old,” sounds a touch too smooth given the desperation-tinged lyrics, performed live it hit a poignant note. He brought out a young Make-A-Wish recipient to finish the song with him, giving extra weight to its chorus’s last line — ”I had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone.” That refrain also called back to the depiction of Combs as a striver in the show’s intro, while his set showed how that faith in himself had paid off for him and his audience.

NEW INFO: Lightning Delays Friday Night’s Luke Combs Concert in Philly

  • Print this page

Luke Combs' concert in Philly at Lincoln Financial Field has been delayed by lightning. The storm has brought lightning and heavy rain to South Philadelphia, as of 10:30 pm.

However, stadium officials told us just after 10:30 pm that the show had NOT been canceled. They said the show would resume when conditions allow. They confirmed the news in a tweet on the X platform shared with fans at 10:36 pm Friday night.

"He will play his full set once the weather is clear," they wrote.

Fans reacted excitedly to news that the show was likely to continue this evening.

It's unclear exactly what time Luke Combs will take to the stage on Friday night. But when he does, here's his expected setlist.

Friday's show was well underway when the initial news of a weather delay was shared with fans around 9:00 pm.

The concert's opening acts had already performed. That was about the time that fans expected Luke to take to the stage around 9:00 pm when they learned of the delay as lightning was reported in the area.

Shortly after (around 9:30 pm), officials with Lincoln Financial Field instructed fans to exit the open seating area as a result of the thunderstorm for safety.

"For your safety, please exit the open seating area at this time and seek shelter along the concourses, utilizing the ramps to spread out. Thank you for your cooperation," stadium officials wrote on social media .

"A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued by the National Weather Service for our area. These storms may produce severe conditions, including lightning, and strong winds."

Footage shared on social media showed fans crowding inside the stadium awaiting an update.

The initial announcement about a delay was first shared with fans on monitors throughout the stadium.

That initial message told fans they were awaiting clearance as there was lightning in the area. It was posted just before 9:00 pm on Friday.

"Hey y'all, due to the threat of lightning, we'll be on stage as soon as we get clearance from the stadium. Appreciate your patience," it read.

While concerts are technically rain or shine, they do not happen during a thunderstorm for safety purposes.

And, yes, the weather radar showed a pretty large line of thunderstorms approaching the city of Philadelphia. And, yes, there's a lot of lightning associated with these storms so far.

In fact, here's a look at the weather radar in the area just before 9:30. It appears as if the storm may last a little longer in the area. We'll keep you updated.

If you're in the stadium, stay patient. Concerts often resume after it is safe again. Stadium officials will keep you updated, of course, the best they can.

Be kind and patient Philly!

Yes, we've seen videos of some inpatient fans fighting in the concourse as they try to pass the time tonight during the delay.

Last Week: Luke Combs Cuts Show Short in Massachusetts

Combs' tour unfortunately has been no stranger to weather delays. Combs' set at Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts was disrupted by a thunderstorm. The storm resulted in mid-show delay last Friday night.

Combs performed for about 40 minutes before the storm delay. Then after he returned for another 20 minutes before more weather rolled in and officials forced the artist to wrap his set early.

Luke was able to perform a full show on Saturday night in Foxboro, Ma., but our sister station WOKQ says Luke was just as disappointed as those fans were.

https://twitter.com/lukecombs/status/1682617308672393218

"To everyone at @GilletteStadium   tonight. I’d have played all damn night," Combs wrote on Twitter.  "The Fire Marshall made a call that we couldn’t play anymore for the safety of the public."

Rain dampens Luke Combs concert in Philadelphia after fans spend all day in heat

Fans will be back Saturday night cheering again for Luke Combs.

WPVI logo

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Lightning, thunder, and rain dampened the mood at the Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia Friday night as fans were forced to clear the stands and take cover about halfway through the Luke Combs concert.

The concert itself was even delayed due to the stormy weather, with festivities kicking off two hours behind schedule.

Many left the stadium entirely, even after spending the whole day in the heat.

From bottled water to handheld fans to buckets of ice, thousands of people found a way to stay cool and hydrated for the performance.

READ | Doctors warn hot temperatures can bring health issues

Some even decided the fewer the clothes, the better, and took off their shirt.

"Lots of water and every now and again a beer," said Hawk Thompson from Reading. "It's a good time. Everyone is having fun."

Action News meteorologists said temperatures reached 94 degrees with a heat index value over 100 in Philadelphia.

Because of the excessive heat, Lincoln Financial Field allowed guests to bring in one unopened bottle of water.

"If I can find pockets of shade, I do," said Eileen Zul from Huntingdon Valley. "I also brought a little fan. Hot air, but it's some air."

There was also some love in the air.

"I proposed to my girlfriend, and now she's my fiancé," said Matthew Coakley.

"I'm just giggles and just happy and happy to be here," said his new fiancé Kelsey Tule.

These now fiancés agree life is better together, and so did a team of Barren Hill volunteer firefighters.

"We have some cool gear, we have some shade," said David Cox from Lafayette Hill. "But nonetheless, we're here and ready to party, and ready to have fun."

Fans proved the heat is no competition when it comes to a Luke Combs show.

"We love Luke Combs," Zul cheered before the show.

The K lot opens at noon. The show begins at 5:45 p.m.

Luke Combs Is Back Touring Around North America in His 'Fast Car'

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Luke Combs has been on a steady ride to the top of the country music scene since his debut studio album This One's For You in 2017. Fast-forward to 2024, and he's nominated for ACM Entertainer of the Year and heading back out on the road for his "Growin' Up and Gettin' Old" summer tour. As fans are eager to see Combs on stage again, the 34-year-old star is equally stoked to get back out there and perform.

"I’m just excited to be touring again. My crew had a well-deserved break and I enjoyed time off with my family, but I love playing shows—that’s my favorite part of this whole thing, so I’ll love being back out on the road and getting to play two shows a week," Combs told Country Living.

Combs Shares the Motivation Behind Gettin' Old

A lot has changed for Combs since his country music debut, including marrying his wife Nicole , welcoming two sons into the world, and amassing millions of fans. As he's growing up and getting older, his music has evolved from light-hearted party anthems and breakup songs to more heartfelt and mature country ballads (don't worry, there are still a few party songs in the mix).

"I mean, just as I get older and as things in my life change—being married and having two boys—my music seems to follow that in more of a serious aspect when it comes to what I’m singing about. Of course still some party songs thrown in there, but definitely a lot more songs with a deeper meaning," Combs said of his musical evolution.

Life on the road looks a little different now for the husband and father of two, and he admits that he values family time on tour above all else. "I bring my wife, Nicole, when I can. That’s the best thing. And my dog sometimes. And of course the boys when we can. Anytime they’re out or my parents and family, the road feels like home," Combs explained.

He's Still the Same Luke Combs We Know and Love

While Luke Combs may be growing up, there's a few things that haven't changed about the "Beautiful Crazy" singer: his love for Tracy Chapman's "Fast Car," trucker hats, and Miller Lite.

Of course, we had to confirm whether "Fast Car" made the cut for the "Growin' Up and Gettin' Old" Tour setlist. Fans, breathe a sign of relief: "Yes, we'll definitely be playing 'Fast Car.' Tracy's song has really resonated with my fans so I love playing it for them as much as I love the songs myself," Combs said. Now that that important fact is cleared up, we can move on to Combs's other mainstays: his hats and his beer.

Luke drinking a Miller *while wearing a hat*

Luke on the iheartradio red carpet *while wearing a hat*, luke performing in a miller lite hat, luke at the cmt awards *in a hat*.

It's rare to catch Luke Combs without a trucker hat on his head, whether he's on the red carpet, performing, or out on the town. Seriously, we think he may have an entire closet devoted to hats, but possibly the largest portion of his collection rep his favorite beer, Miller Lite. "I keep it casual most of the time. I love Miller hats. I have a huge collection of them and wear them all the time," Luke admitted.

Creating a Miller Lite x Luke Combs Tour Trucker hat was an absolute no-brainer. "Miller came to me about creating my own—it was perfect. We made sure to add elements of my album art and Miller Lite's design throughout. I really love the design that we pulled together," Combs continued.

Not only can you rock the same hat as Luke Combs for the price of a Miller Lite 24 pack, the hat could also end up being your ticket to a Luke Combs concert! When you buy The Miller Lite x Luke Combs Trucker (available April 17 at shop.millerlite.com ), you're entered to win two tickets to a Luke Combs concert, beer money, and two tickets plus free travel to Luke's Bootlegger Bonfire Weekend.

"I love Miller Lite and it's as simple as that. Miller Lite has been my go-to beer for years now and I love working with them to bring more beer and more music to fans," Combs concluded.

Before Luke Combs plays in front of the 'best fans' for his Milwaukee concerts this week, he tours Miller Brewery and even shotguns a beer

luke combs tour rain policy

Before Luke Combs kicks off his "Growin' Up and Gettin' Old" tour in Milwaukee this week, he went on another kind of tour. One that is quintessentially Brew City.

Combs, one of country music's biggest stars, is playing two shows at American Family Field : One Friday and another Saturday. But ahead of that, he took a tour of the Miller Brewery . And, we got to tag along.

Yes, he was every bit as kindhearted, down-to-earth and genuine as he seems. And yes, he shotgunned a beer just like he does on stage. Except this time, he was hanging out on a brewhouse rooftop with the iconic giant red Miller sign and the Milwaukee Brewers' ballpark as his backdrop.

Not only did Combs — a longtime Miller Lite fan and years-long partner — see where the magic happens, he also checked out the specialty packaging on cases and cans that's coming out in honor of his blockbuster tour.

"It's just surreal, you know?" Combs told the Journal Sentinel. "I feel like I get to live so many amazing, surreal moments. And, I'm really thankful for that for sure. It's crazy. It's crazy."

Here's what we learned about Combs' tour and what he got into on the Miller tour. And, how about his eight Academy of Country Music Awards nominations that were announced earlier this week? We asked him about those, too.

Luke Combs talks about his 'Growin' Up and Gettin' Old' tour and why he's kicking it off in the Midwest

A or A+ shows don't cut it for Combs. He's shooting for A++.

"I try to do everything I can do to take care of my voice, take care of myself, make sure that we're doing everything we can," Combs said. "People that come are the only reason we get to do what we do. Putting on an A++ show is really important to me."

About to embark on his 25-date stadium tour, he's excited — and "a little nervous."

"You feel like you're standing at the bottom of a mountain and you're looking at the top a little bit," he said.

But after last year's "Luke Combs World Tour," he said he feels more prepared for what's ahead of him.

"We've played everywhere all over the world," Combs said. "But, the Midwest, it feels like home to me. So, good place to start it."

HOW TO AVOID TRAFFIC: Luke Combs concerts could cause delays on I-94 this weekend

Combs, who grew up in North Carolina, hadn't been anywhere close to Milwaukee when he started his music career — his first plane ride came at age 25. But, he remembers his earlier stops up here fondly.

He opened for Blake Shelton at Summerfest in 2018 and made an appearance at Farm Aid at Alpine Valley Music Theatre in 2019.

"The Midwest is like the best fans in the world," Combs said. "I mean, honestly. People probably say that all the time."

But, that doesn't mean pulling out of the driveway Tuesday night wasn't hard after the "amazing" time he spent with his "awesome" wife Nicole and their two sons — Tex and Beau — these past few months. Fortunately, he won't have to miss his other half too long. She'll be headed up this way this weekend.

What will always make it onto Combs' setlist this time around? "The songs that people would expect," Combs shared.

"Playing all the hits," he said. "That's why people are there, and I want to give them what they want."

But, each night of the tour will have a different vibe.

Combs' opening acts Friday — in the order they'll hit the stage — are the Wilder Blue, Charles Wesley Godwin and Cody Jinks.

"Friday's more in the Americana, singer-songwriter world," Combs said. "So, our set reflects that a little bit. But, obviously, still playing all the hits."

Saturday's openers will be Colby Acuff, Drew Parker, Mitchell Tenpenny and Jordan Davis.

"Saturday night is more mainstream, Top 40 country stuff, which is what I do, really," Combs said.

Combs loves watching Jinks and Davis perform — they keep him honest, he said — and he knows they're going to kick some you know what.

The first opener will start at 5:45 p.m. Friday and Saturday, with gates opening at 5 p.m.

The parking lots will open at 3 p.m. Friday and 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Tailgating will be permitted. Give yourself plenty of time to drive in and get through security.

There also will be a "Bootleggers Tailgate Party" at 3 p.m. Saturday with two up-and-comers picked by Combs and Nashville-based concert series Whiskey Jam: Ryan Larkins and Graham Barham. It'll take place at Am Fam Field's Third Base Plaza, and will be free to attend for Combs concert ticketholders, with food and drinks available to purchase.

Luke Combs' love for Miller Lite and his visit to Miller Brewery

After getting into Milwaukee Wednesday morning, Combs hung out at the Brewers stadium for a couple of hours, worked out, then was off to the Miller Brewery.

How long has Combs been a fan of Miller Lite? "Forever, probably."

"My dad's been drinking it for a long time," Combs said. "It was always around the house."

If his music career never worked out, he said, he would still be sporting a Columbia fishing shirt and drinking a Miller Lite somewhere in the world.

"That's what I would be doing anyways," he said. "So, I really wanted to go after things that I was already passionate about that felt natural and authentic to me. So, I'm very thankful for (Molson Coors) being receptive to have me on board. I feel super lucky."

Sporting a Brewers Barrelman hat, Combs and his team walked into a conference room on the brewery's complex Wednesday. He was met by a small group of longtime brewery employees and other Molson Coors staffers. The beer cases and cans with his new specialty packaging were displayed on tables.

The design features a ribbon that says "Beer Never Broke My Heart" wrapped in between the tuning pegs of a guitar. Combs' name is at the top of the headstock.

LUKE COMBS IN MILWAUKEE: Country superstar introduces heartbreaking new baseball-tinged song at American Family Field

After everyone went around the room introducing themselves, they were instructed to suit up in PPE — yellow safety vests, glasses, hard hats, toe caps and headsets.

On Combs' VIP tour of the brewery, he got a first-hand — and at times, hands-on — look at the operations with facts and history lessons along the way.

The first stop was a packaging plant, where Combs met machinist Jeff Malecki who has "But they ain't seen us together" from Combs' song "Forever After All" tattooed across his arm.

The two shook hands and got a picture together. That would become a reoccurring scene throughout Combs' visit.

It seemed like every employee who crossed paths with Combs received a handshake. And, if they wanted a photo or autograph, they got those, too, without any hesitation.

In the warehouse, Combs saw cases with the specialty packaging sliding out of a machine — he pulled his phone out to document that — and stacks of those cases getting carried off on a pallet via forklift.

At one point, Combs stood in front of what looked like a mountain of the cases. "Get this one," he said to a photographer as he hugged the cases as far as his arms would stretch.

Later, he'd get to snag one of the cans right off of a quick-moving line.

He got a taste of that and a few different brewery roles, including one that involved flipping a cardboard box filled with unconstructed cases into place. A few cases snuck out the back, but not too shabby for a first-timer.

"Thanks for letting me do that," Combs said to the workers as he shook their hands. "Thanks for letting me be in the way."

Combs also tried his hand at adding hops, one of which was liquid. "Have y'all seen 'Superbad'?" Combs asked with a bucket of hops in hand.

It reminded him of the scene when McLovin was trying to buy booze at a liquor store and said to the cashier: "You know, I heard they recently decided to add more hops to it."

Toward the conclusion of the tour, Combs said he had a "truly amazing" time. But, his favorite part had to be the grand finale.

He got to go up on a brewhouse rooftop with striking views of the city, the home of the Brewers and that big red Miller sign.

Up there is where he shotgunned a beer in under 5 seconds, and had the honor of sampling an exclusive maturation stock that not many get to try.

"To be standing up here is really a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," Combs said.

How about those eight ACM Awards nominations

The 59th Academy of Country Music Awards nominations were announced earlier this week. Combs leads the nominations with eight , including entertainer of the year, male artist of the year, album of the year, song of the year, single of the year and music event of the year.

"It's really awesome," he said. "Always surprising, I think ... In a lot of ways, it feels like I've been doing this a lifetime. And, in a lot of ways, I feel like I've been doing it for six months. So, I feel like sometimes I'm so conflicted with knowing what to feel or think ... It's an honor. It's my wildest dreams coming true. So, I'm a very lucky guy every day."

A 2024 win via Combs nomination for entertainer of the year would clinch the coveted triple crown award, which consists of an entertainer of the year win plus wins in an act's respective new artist (male, female, duo, or group) and artist (male, female, duo or group) categories, a USA TODAY report said.

The event will air on Prime Video and the Amazon Music channel on Twitch live from Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas, on May 16.

Piet Levy of the Journal Sentinel staff and USA TODAY contributed to this report.

Luke Combs introduces heartbreaking new baseball-tinged song at American Family Field

luke combs tour rain policy

Country-music star Luke Combs kicks off his Growin' Up and Gettin' Old Tour at American Family Field , home of the Milwaukee Brewers, on Friday for the first of back-to-back Milwaukee shows, and he used the setting to introduce a new song.

Combs posted a song called "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" on social media while perched in a chair on the Terrace level of the stadium, all while the stage he would play Friday and Saturday night was getting constructed on the field in the background.

No, the song isn't just a cover of the ritualized in-stadium anthem that shares its name; rather, it's a bit of a tear-jerker about a son coming to terms with divorcing parents and why he can't just catch a game with his father anymore.

"I'm at the ballpark, so I figured I'd share a new one called 'Take Me Out to the Ballgame,'" Combs wrote on social media with the video of the performance, accompanied solely by his guitar.

His tour will hit numerous stadiums, though largely of the football variety; American Family Field will be the lone stop on the tour that typically houses Major League Baseball.

Tracy Chapman and Luke Combs performing at the 2024 Grammy Awards

“Fast Car” continues to drive Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman to the top — this time, at the 2024 Academy of Country Music Awards .

Combs is the top contender this year with eight nominations, competing for entertainer of the year as well as single and song of the year with “Fast Car.” He shares the latter nomination with Chapman, who wrote the song alone and had major success with it in 1988, 35 years before Combs brought new life to the track and made it a country hit.

His competition includes last year’s winner Chris Stapleton, Morgan Wallen , Jelly Roll , Lainey Wilson, Kane Brown and Cody Johnson. Combs’ other nominations include album of the year for Gettin’ Old , male artist of the year and music event of the year for “Different ‘Round Here” with Riley Green.

Wallen’s historic run on the pop and country charts helped him land behind Combs with six nominations. He’s up for album of the year with One Thing at a Time , which spent 18 weeks at No. 1 on the all-genre Billboard 200 chart, and single of the year for the Grammy-nominated “Last Night,” which topped the all-genre Hot 100 chart for 16 weeks. Wallen is also competing for male artist of the year, artist-songwriter of the year and music event of the year with “Man Made A Bar” with Eric Church.

Breakthrough star Megan Moroney also scored six nominations — the most for a female act. She will compete for female artist of the year, song of the year and visual media of the year for “Tennessee Orange,” music event of the year for “Can’t Break Up Now” with Old Dominion and new female artist of the year.

Stapleton, Wilson and Johnson earned five nominations each, while Jelly Roll and Jordan Davis picked up four nods.
