As the season of Lent approaches, many of us look for ways to deepen our spiritual journey and draw closer to God.

Whether you're a seasoned Lent observer or someone new to the practice, having a tool to help you stay focused and intentional can be immensely beneficial.

That's why I’m excited to offer you a free Lent tracker printable designed to guide you through the 40 days of Lent with purpose and reflection.

Let’s take a minute to explore the Tracker.

At the top of the Lent tracker, you'll find a prompt: " My 40-Day Lent Commitment ." This is your invitation to ponder and declare your personal commitment to the Lenten season.

It could be a goal for spiritual growth, a practice you wish to incorporate, or an area of your life you feel called to focus on during this sacred time.

Beneath the commitment prompt, there's a section for notes. Here, you can jot down any thoughts, prayers, or intentions related to your Lenten commitment.

Use this space to reflect on your journey, record insights, or write down specific prayers you want to lift up to God throughout Lent.

The main section of the Lent tracker consists of 40 numbered squares, each representing a day of Lent.

As you progress through the season, color in or check off each square to mark your daily commitment. This visual representation of your journey serves as a powerful reminder of your dedication and progress.

By committing to a specific Lenten practice and tracking your progress daily, you can deepen your relationship with God and experience the transformative power of this sacred season.

Download your free Lent tracker today and let it guide you on a meaningful journey of faith and reflection.

SUPPLIES I RECOMMEND FOR PRINTING

If you’re going to be printing in color, I really recommend investing in an HP Instant Ink-compatible printer . The quality of the finished product is amazing! If you don’t need a color printer, I highly recommend a laser printer like the Brother L23 Series . You will save hundreds on ink. You can also get a color laser printer which I would LOVE to have!

For everyday printables, planners, and coloring pages for the kiddos I normally use Hammermill Printer Paper, 20 Lb . I love that you can get a small box of 3 reams instead of having to buy one at a time or a whole case of 10.

If I want something a little nicer, I use this laser paper which is incredibly smooth and has very little to no ghosting on the other side. This is perfect if you like to use pens/markers that are prone to bleeding through to the other side.

For printing on A5 paper, I use this Blank 6-Hole Punched A5 Paper . You can also get it without the holes but it’s $6-7 more. Which I think is odd because it’s usually the other way around and you have to pay more for the hole punching.

If you're printing a binder cover that is fade-resistant and lasts a long time, I would recommend the best paper using Epson Presentation paper . It's heavy like cardstock (48 lb), is great when laminated, and is made to last for decades.

Lent: Journey to Jesus

Lent: Journey to Jesus

Lent is often referred to as 40 days in the desert. It refers to the 40 days that Jesus spent in the desert being tempted by the devil. It is a time of self-denial and service. Lent fills the 40 days between Ash Wednesday and Palm Sunday, the start of Holy Week. It is really that simple! Just 40 days for us to draw near to God as we journey toward the week of Jesus’ great gift to us during Holy Week.

This Lenten Season is seen by traditional, orthodox churches as a time to connect with God and prepare our hearts for Easter.

Five Parts to Lent:

  • Prayer – communicating with God
  • Repentance – Confessing our sins and asking for forgiveness
  • Fasting – giving up something and replacing that thing with connecting to God through prayer or bible reading
  • Giving to others – helping others with time, talents, or money
  • Steps toward Easter – The story of Easter, starting at Palm Sunday

The Challenge

Over the next 40 days, leading up to Easter, I will post one devotional and Bible art journaling tutorial each week. Read the devotional or watch the video and respond to what God is saying to you. You can create art in your Bible or a journal and post a pic on the Devotion in Action Facebook page. You can write your thoughts out and post on Facebook or in the comments.

Let’s share what God is saying with each other as we travel through this Journey to Jesus during the season of Lent.

Journey to the Foot of the Cross - 10 Things to Remember For Lent

Bishop David L. Ricken of Green Bay, Wisconsin, former chairman of the Committee on Evangelization and Catechesis, offers “10 Things to Remember for Lent”:

  • Remember the formula. The Church does a good job capturing certain truths with easy-to-remember lists and formulas: 10 Commandments, 7 sacraments, 3 persons in the Trinity. For Lent, the Church gives us almost a slogan—Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving—as the three things we need to work on during the season.
  • It’s a time of prayer. Lent is essentially an act of prayer spread out over 40 days. As we pray, we go on a journey, one that hopefully brings us closer to Christ and leaves us changed by the encounter with him.
  • It’s a time to fast. With the fasts of Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, meatless Fridays, and our personal disciplines interspersed, Lent is the only time many Catholics these days actually fast. And maybe that’s why it gets all the attention. “What are you giving up for Lent? Hotdogs? Beer? Jelly beans?” It’s almost a game for some of us, but fasting is actually a form of penance, which helps us turn away from sin and toward Christ.
  • It’s a time to work on discipline. The 40 days of Lent are also a good, set time to work on personal discipline in general. Instead of giving something up, it can be doing something positive. “I’m going to exercise more. I’m going to pray more. I’m going to be nicer to my family, friends and coworkers.”
  • It’s about dying to yourself. The more serious side of Lenten discipline is that it’s about more than self-control – it’s about finding aspects of yourself that are less than Christ-like and letting them die. The suffering and death of Christ are foremost on our minds during Lent, and we join in these mysteries by suffering, dying with Christ and being resurrected in a purified form.
  • Don’t do too much. It’s tempting to make Lent some ambitious period of personal reinvention, but it’s best to keep it simple and focused. There’s a reason the Church works on these mysteries year after year. We spend our entire lives growing closer to God. Don’t try to cram it all in one Lent. That’s a recipe for failure.
  • Lent reminds us of our weakness. Of course, even when we set simple goals for ourselves during Lent, we still have trouble keeping them. When we fast, we realize we’re all just one meal away from hunger. In both cases, Lent shows us our weakness. This can be painful, but recognizing how helpless we are makes us seek God’s help with renewed urgency and sincerity.
  • Be patient with yourself. When we’re confronted with our own weakness during Lent, the temptation is to get angry and frustrated. “What a bad person I am!” But that’s the wrong lesson. God is calling us to be patient and to see ourselves as he does, with unconditional love.
  • Reach out in charity. As we experience weakness and suffering during Lent, we should be renewed in our compassion for those who are hungry, suffering or otherwise in need. The third part of the Lenten formula is almsgiving. It’s about more than throwing a few extra dollars in the collection plate; it’s about reaching out to others and helping them without question as a way of sharing the experience of God’s unconditional love.
  • Learn to love like Christ. Giving of ourselves in the midst of our suffering and self-denial brings us closer to loving like Christ, who suffered and poured himself out unconditionally on cross for all of us. Lent is a journey through the desert to the foot of the cross on Good Friday, as we seek him out, ask his help, join in his suffering, and learn to love like him.

I have spent the last several months feeling a little overwhelmed.  Do you ever have those kinds of stretches of time too?  It just seems like there is so much to do, but I just can’t quite get the right focus (or time) to get it all done.  With Lent quickly approaching, I was worried about making a big commitment to one Lenten sacrifice.  Because of that, I worked on this free printable that I thought others might benefit from too: 40 Lenten Activities for Catholic Families .

Note: You will get the download by clicking on a text link farther down in this post that says “DOWNLOAD THE 40 LENTEN ACTIVITIES FOR CATHOLIC FAMILIES FREE PRINTABLE.”

A free printable perfect for Lent this year! This features 40 Lenten activities for Catholic families and kids. (It comes in both color and black and white.)

As has been a hallmark of my life lately, I kept this printable open on my computer for days as I slowly worked on filling in the 40 squares.  When we were going to watch a movie as a family the other night, I declared that I needed five minutes of crowd sourcing for my last eight squares.

My family then offered up ideas for how to fill in the remaining squares.  Of course, my poor kids were sometimes getting frustrated, as they would offer up a suggestion and I would tell them that I already had that, or something similar.  Finally though, we finished up all of the squares.

After we finished, without me suggesting that I wanted to print this out for us to use, I was so pleased when my kids started saying that we should work our way through this printable during Lent.

In your home, you could decide to print out one copy for the whole family to work on or you may decide to print each person out their own printable.  That’s up to you and what will work best for your family. (You could also do this printable, but also plan for individual sacrifices with this planning sheet .)

Although I put a couple of mentions of Holy Week types of activities in the last row, this is absolutely not a page where activities should be done in a certain order.  Sometimes something in the bottom row might be better for your family to do before something in the top row.  Go for it!

I purposefully made this in a way that you could tailor it to your family’s needs.  Just mark off things as you do them in any order you wish.

Does 40 activities just seem like too much to you?  Don’t worry – I also have a 10 Lent and Holy Week Activities for Catholic Families Free Printable as well!

I appreciate you checking on the usage. Yes, that will be fine to make a copy for each of the kids in the program. Just make sure that the copyright information with the web address still shows up on the copies. (I mainly just don’t want it reproduced in a publication that might go out to a large area or diocese.) So, your usage is totally fine. Thank you for sharing my work with so many families!

Lent, a significant period in the Christian calendar, encompasses a journey of reflection, preparation, and spiritual rejuvenation leading up to Easter Sunday. Rooted in centuries-old traditions and spiritual disciplines, Lent invites believers to emulate Jesus Christ’s withdrawal into the desert for 40 days, symbolizing sacrifice and devotion.

Links to Information in this post

What is Lent?

Lent, the 40-day period preceding Easter, commences on Ash Wednesday, serving as a time of introspection and readiness for the Easter celebrations. It mirrors Jesus Christ’s retreat into the wilderness, resonating with themes of sacrifice, repentance, and spiritual renewal.

The Origins and Significance of Lent:

Dating back to the early days of Christianity, Lent finds its roots in the solemn observances of Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday. It traces back to the practices of the sixth century and gained formal recognition during the Council of Nicaea. The Latin word “Lent” denotes lengthening days, symbolizing the journey towards spiritual enlightenment and the promise of new life in Christ.

Lenten Practices and Traditions:

Throughout Lent, Christians engage in various practices and disciplines, including prayer, fasting, and acts of charity. From the ceremonial washing of feet on Maundy Thursday to the solemn processions of the Stations of the Cross, each ritual holds profound significance in the Lenten calendar. Eastern and Western churches alike observe Lent with devotion, fostering spiritual growth and self-discipline.

The Journey of Lent:

Reflections and CommitmentsFor believers, Lent serves as a time of self-examination and commitment to deeper spiritual engagement. It offers an opportunity to realign priorities, cultivate inner transformation, and foster a closer relationship with God. Through prayerful reflection, fasting, and acts of kindness, individuals embark on a journey of self-discovery and renewal.

Lent in Practice:

Embracing Spiritual DisciplinesThe Lenten season presents an occasion for believers to embrace spiritual disciplines and foster a closer walk with God. From fasting from indulgences to engaging in acts of charity, Lent offers a structured framework for personal and communal growth. It provides a platform for believers to heed the call of discipleship and embody the teachings of Jesus Christ in their daily lives.

Navigating Lent:

Practical Considerations and Resources As Lent unfolds, individuals may seek guidance and resources to navigate the spiritual journey effectively. From printable guides to prayer journals, these tools offer invaluable support in fostering a meaningful Lenten experience. Frequently asked questions, such as the origins of Lent and its duration, serve to deepen understanding and engagement with this sacred season.

A leading source of news and information defines lent for us : Lent  is the period of 40 days which comes before Easter in the Christian calendar. Beginning on Ash Wednesday,  Lent  is a season of reflection and preparation before the celebrations of Easter. By observing the 40 days of  Lent , Christians replicate Jesus Christ’s sacrifice and withdrawal into the desert for 40 days

Here are three reasons I have decided to participate in Lent

  • There are so many distractions and things vying for my attention throughout the year and this is a structured focused time of preparation for a personal encounter with Jesus. A time to refocus, meditate, grow and delve deeper.
  • It helps my husband and I evaluate and grow spiritually together. With the plan to prepare special meals for this time, we can intentionally observe aspects of this tradition to enhance our family health, time and focus on Godly things that matter.
  • I desire to answer the call and invitation to follow Christ’s example in The Word faithfully and practice active discipleship through building my relationship with Jesus and others in a communal sense.

3 ways to renew and record this Lent Experience Preparation Guide Journal Journey 2

Struggling to decide whether you should participate? Think about whether you could use a structured time to draw closer to God in community. Like so many communities, it’s an opportunity to be held accountable during this time you’ve set aside with others who are dedicated to sacrifice and exercise the spiritual disciplines through selflessness. It will undoubtedly realign your perspective and deepen your relationship with Christ as you prepare to celebrate the death and resurrection of our king! Prayerfully, choose to “ Live Again ” by 1st dying out to the habits that can sometimes hold us captive.

Honestly, I just decided I would participate in this consecrated time and tradition on the morning Lent began in 2020. The night before while I was completing some projects alongside my mother for Pearls and Pillars, a live video with Dr. Jamaal Bryant was shared by one of her friends that had us, as well as many other millennials thinking of the significance of Lent. He encouraged his members and those who wish to join the journey to not spend through a financial fast. When we think of fasting, we immediately think of “what food or habit I can sacrifice and give to God during this period of consecration.” This is however another form of fasting that is compelling to consider.

The purpose for this post is to encourage you to go on the journey to make the decision to fast and pray. And to provide tools to equip you on your journey. What method do you intend to utilize? Downloading this guide and journal will prayerfully & effectively inspire you to go on this journey to Refocus, Recommit, deepen, refresh & renew leading to resurrection!

1st is the free printable guide I offer to begin your journey to think of what your priorities are and the personal encounter that will take place during these 40 days of fasting and seeking His face.

Lent stands as a sacred period of preparation, reflection, and spiritual renewal in the Christian calendar. As believers embark on this transformative journey, may they find inspiration and strength in the timeless traditions and teachings of the Lenten season. Let us embrace the call to prayer, fasting, and acts of kindness, as we journey towards the celebration of Easter and the promise of new life in Christ.

Your Lent Journal Journey Printable Guide

The season of Lent marks a pivotal period in the Christian liturgical calendar, commemorating Jesus Christ’s public ministry and his ultimate sacrifice for humanity. It begins with Ash Wednesday, symbolizing repentance and the solemn journey towards Easter Sunday, the celebration of Christ’s resurrection. Throughout Lent, believers immerse themselves in sacred scripture, drawing inspiration from biblical teachings and narratives that illuminate the path of faith and redemption.

Holy Wednesday, situated within the Lenten calendar, holds particular significance as it reflects on the events leading to Jesus Christ’s resurrection. It serves as a poignant reminder of the lengthening days, symbolizing the gradual emergence of hope and renewal amidst spiritual introspection and prayer. As believers embark on this season of fasting and reflection, they are called to embrace the ordinary time of everyday life, infusing each moment with acts of kindness, compassion, and devotion to God’s word.

The first Sunday of Lent marks the commencement of this solemn season, inviting believers to journey alongside Jesus Christ in his desert fast and spiritual preparation. It heralds a time of inner transformation and true conversion of heart, symbolized by the waving of palm branches, a gesture of homage and reverence for the Lord’s resurrection. Throughout the Sundays of Lent, believers engage in a myriad of Lenten activities, from prayerful contemplation to charitable deeds, as they anticipate the glorious culmination of Easter Sunday and the triumph of light over darkness.

As believers journey through the Lenten season, may they find solace in the solemn songs of worship and the nourishment of full meals shared in fellowship. Let the word of God guide their steps as they honor obligatory days of fasting and embrace the sacred rituals that accompany this holy time. As Easter approaches, may the joyful anticipation be adorned with symbols of faith, as you journal why not add an Easter sticker to your entry  symbolizing new life and renewal. Just as Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem on Holy Monday marked the beginning of a transformative week, may each day of Lent be a testament to spiritual growth, inner reflection, and unwavering devotion. With a 40-day calendar journal as a faithful companion, may believers navigate the Lenten journey with purpose and perseverance, emerging strengthened in faith and ready to celebrate the resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Frequently Asked Questions:

When does lent start or when is lent.

  • Because Lent follows the liturgical calendar, the exact date that Lent falls each year changes. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, which is always held 46 days (40 fasting days and 6 Sundays) before Easter Sunday. – 40 Acts

What is the Meaning of Lent?

  •  By observing the 40 days of Lent, Christians replicate Jesus Christ’s sacrifice and withdrawal into the desert for 40 days. Lent is marked by fasting, both from food and festivities.
  • Christian churches that observe Lent in the 21st century (and not all do significantly) use it as a time for prayer and penance. Only a small number of people today fast for the whole of Lent, although some maintain the practice on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. It is more common these days for believers to surrender a particular vice such as favorite foods or forms of entertainment. Whatever the sacrifice it is a reflection of Jesus’ deprivation in the wilderness and a test of self-discipline. – BBC

What is Lent and Why Is It Celebrated?

Some Christians also take on a Lenten discipline, like reading the Bible and spending more time in prayer to draw nearer to God. Strict observers of Lent do not eat meat on Fridays, often opting for fish instead. The goal of these spiritual disciplines is to strengthen the faith of the observer and develop a closer relationship with God. – Learn Religions

  • The three main things people focus on during Lent are prayer, fasting (abstaining from something to reduce distractions and focus more on God) and giving, or charity.Prayer during Lent focuses on our need for God’s forgiveness. It’s also about repenting (turning away from our sins) and receiving God’s mercy and love.Fasting, or giving something up, is a very common practice during Lent. The idea is that giving up something that’s a regular part of life, like eating dessert or scrolling through Facebook, can be a reminder of Jesus’ sacrifice. That time can also be replaced with more time connecting with God. – Cru

How Long is Lent?

In Genesis, the flood which destroyed the earth was brought about by 40 days and nights of rain.

  • The Hebrews spent 40 years in the wilderness before reaching the land promised to them by God.
  • Moses fasted for 40 days before receiving the ten commandments on Mount Sinai.
  • Jesus spent 40 days fasting in the wilderness in preparation for his ministry. ( BBC )

Little With Great Love

A Lenten Journey: 40 Days of Kindness

Let's positively impact our homes, families, neighbors & communities

' src=

Seems like it was just New Year’s, and now Lent is nearly upon us. If you haven’t had time to decide what you’ll be doing for 40 days, don’t panic, we’re here to support you through your Lenten Journey.

Our community is established on the mission of doing little things with great love. This is inspired by the spiritualities of Sts. Thérèse Of Lisieux and Teresa of Calcutta. To honor this, we’re launching our first Little With Great Love Lenten initiative, “ 40 Days of Kindness ” for Lent 2020.

“God has created us so we do small things with great love. I believe that in great love, that comes, or should come from the heart, should start at home; with my family, my neighbors across the street, those right next door. And this love should then reach everyone.”  St. Mother Teresa

Kindness is a principle that is mentioned throughout the Bible. God exhibits kindness, and it is an attribute of his that we are also called to imitate. In Paul’s letter to the Colossians, we are called to “clothe” ourselves with it.

“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.” Colossians 3:12

A Fruit of the Holy Spirit as well, kindness is one of the “ perfections that the Holy Spirit forms in us as the first fruits of eternal glory ” (CCC 1832). Nine of the twelve Fruits of the Holy Spirit are derived from Galatians 5:22-23. When we allow the grace of the Holy Spirit to be effective in us, it produces good fruit – among which is showing kindness.

For the next 40 days, we will be doing these acts of kindness together with you, in our homes, with our families, our neighbors, in our communities. These selfless acts for others are meant to show others that they are cared for and to help us put the needs of others first. This Lenten initiative allows the Holy Spirit to bear good fruit through us.

This is a  super easy Lenten initiative to follow . There are no books to read, podcasts to listen to, or emails to keep up with. Everything you need to get started is laid out here. To make it even easier, we’ll also be posting each act of kindness daily across  Facebook and Instagram plus showing each team member doing the acts along with you in our social media stories.

WHAT IS THIS LENTEN INITIATIVE ABOUT?

The “40 Days of Kindness” Lenten initiative is comprised of 40 acts of kindness performed by each of us, one done on each of the 40 days of Lent.

WHEN DOES THIS OCCUR?

We will start on Ash Wednesday until Holy Saturday. We will do it the 40 days (excludes Sundays, as is customary) right up until Easter Sunday.

WHAT DO I NEED TO START?

The simplest way to participate is by using this FREE 1-page downloadable calendar { here }. It lists the days, dates, and acts of kindness for each day all in one spot. Download it here, print, and post it where you’ll see it daily to remind you.

Follow us  Facebook  and  Instagram , where we’ll be posting the daily acts plus showing each team member doing the acts along with you in our social media stories. If you post on social media, please use our hashtag, #littlekinder, and tag us so that we can follow your journey too and share along with ours too!

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

Just like our team, start doing the acts of kindness posted for each corresponding day of Lent.

Then look for the impact these little acts done with great love have on others as well as yourself. Did someone smile? Did it make their day? Did they want to pay it forward? How about you, how did it make you feel?

DO I NEED TO DO ANYTHING ELSE?

No–simply download, print, follow, act kindly. You don’t need to sign up for anything. Posting on social media is optional, but it does serve as encouragement for others to do acts of kindness, too.

“Remember that nothing is small in the eyes of God. Do all that you do with love.” St. Thérèse of Lisieux

Acts of kindness are ways to serve and honor the dignity of our family, neighbors, friends, coworkers and the like. We believe that this initiative will have positive ripple effects, as we each work to put a bit more kindness out into the world. Allow the Holy Spirit to also bear good fruit in our communities.

We will be sharing what our team is doing each day of Lent and would love to hear how your experience is going on the journey as well. So please join in, leave comments, chat with us on social media, or send us a message.

Wishing you a blessed Lent. Let’s make it a #littlekinder Lent together.

I made this printable Lenten calendar for kids, and we use it every year. It has become a tradition now! It’s a fun visual for kids so they can see the 40 days of lent of lent going by, and Easter approaching. I left room in the squares to write in daily prayers or sacrifices if desired. The important days are brought to special attention with fun visuals for kids that symbolize what’s going on that day, and little fish symbolize days to avoid meat (although children are not required to do this). I also love how it shows kids that Sundays are not included in the 40 days of Lent.

This Lenten calendar is now also available for Byzantine Rite Catholics! Check out this beautiful new page.

Days You Can Add To Your Lenten Calendar

Here are some dates you might want to add to your calendar if you don’t have the version from my shop that is specifically for this year. (Lent can start as early at Feb 4, and end as late as April 25, so not all of these dates will fall during every Lent). The printable Lenten calendar is good for every year because I didn’t include any actual dates on the printable version. The calendar pictured above already has some of these things written in, but they aren’t on the printable version.

  • St. Agatha- February 5
  • Our Lady of Lourdes- February 11
  • St. Valentine- February 14
  • Chair of St. Peter the Apostle- Feb 22 (If you write in this day, the liturgical color is white.)
  • St. Patrick- March 17
  • St. Joseph- March 19 (If you write in this day, the liturgical color is white.)
  • Spring Begins (March 19 or 20)
  • Annunciation of the Lord- March 25 (If you write in this day, the liturgical color is white.)
  • St. George- April 23

Again, the version in my shop has these days written into the 2022 version for you !

How To Use Your Printable Lenten Calendar

  • Color each day on the calendar as you go
  • Color the entire calendar at the beginning of Lent, hang your calendar up, and use those cheap foil star stickers to mark off the days as you go. This is my favorite way to use this calendar!
  • Mark off each day as you go by drawing an “X” on that day

I really enjoyed this! I am printing as we speak. This is a great resource for the kids and a great way to follow Lent. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Lacey! I am really excited about this! I wanted to tell you I saw Catholic Icing mentioned in Catechist magazine this month. I was so excited and squealed "I read that every day!!!" I hope that brings you more traffic to your wonderful and inspiring site! God bless you and your family!

Just wonderful, Lacy!

I voted! Can we vote more than once?

Thanks for the link and reminder of what to get ready….lent will come fast!

OK, I should clarify, I voted for YOU!

I just shared your calendar in my post yesterday and I was thinking I wish you had that in Spanish, but now that you shared the one in Italian maybe I should try to translate it myself, if I have time! Congratulations!!

Thanks Lacy! :)Love it

When I try to print this Lenten calendar, it only prints the top portion. No one else here seems to be having that problem…

Thanks, Lacy!!

thank you thank you! I have used this in the past and am happy to see the reminder and print it off again for this year!! I love it!

Awesome, awesome, awesome, I really love the lapbook idea! Thanks for all your inspiration and for making it all so cute!!

Just printed it! I see I am not the only one gearing up for Lent….this is great! Thanks for the lapbook link too!

I voted for you last week, even though I am really fond of some of the other blogs – but I have to say I get more out of this blog than all the others!

Is it ok to distibute the Lent calendar at my parishes?

Hi Lacey! Thank you for sharing this! I really hope you don't mind if I translate your calendar to spanish. I think it's a masterpiece and my little friends will definitely learn so much from it. bobo (blessings and hugs) MJ

Lucy–I did the same thing. Make sure you have the whole document up then print.

Lacey-We have one of these in a picture frame from last year. It will be on our family altar again. I printed some out for the kiddos to color. My daughter was asking about the fish. So it was a great way to introduce her to the practice of eatting fish during Lent. BTW— She says thank you:)

Thank you so much for this! I just printed it out. (I also linked to it on my blog and went and voted for you. 🙂 )

Thanks! using this for our Sunday school..I'm sure they will love it!! And saved us some money, which is always great!!

Thanks! This is awesome!

LOVE this calendar idea! My kids are excited to use it, and I feel that it will help me in my own Lenten journey. Thanks for sharing!

Ready Lacy!!

Your calendar is now offically translated into Spanish!!

Here is the link: http://familiacatolica-org.blogspot.com/2011/02/calendario-de-cuaresma-de-catholic.html

blessings!!

Thank you, thank you for great printables! Just what I needed for my 2nd grade class!

It's a really good idea!

I'm sorry, I feel a little slow but you wrote that the calendar is good for this year but aren't St. Patrick day too late and March since we are starting in Lent in March this year. I don't know how to edit it before I print out.

Oh, thank you. I'm so glad I found your Catholic blog!!!! I'm using this starting Wed., March 9. Ryan, you don't need to change the numbers. They represent the 40 days of lent, not the numbers on a calendar. Hope that helps (i.e. #1 will be colored on Wednesday, March 9, 2011).

I'm still confused. Isn't St. Patrick's day day 8 of Lent this year? But the calendar has it at day 29. Can someone help before I print.

Thanks figured it out. I'm a little slow….kids will love this!!! Thanks,

We used your Lenten calendar for our CCD lesson this evening. Imagine my surprise when my younger son came home with the same thing! Just proves that great minds think alike. Thank you for everything that you do to education us!

Hi Lacy! I´m wrinting from Brazil and I really LOVE your idea. I will print and use in my catechism classes. Congratulations on your blog! This is the first catholic blog that I have seen in English! Thank You.

Hi Lacy! I´m wrinting from Brazil and a really LOVE this calendary. I will print and use in the cathecism classes in my city. Congratulations on your blog, there are excelent ideas… Thank You!!

This is really nice! Do you think you could make an Advent Calendar? The ones that they sell in the stores all have 24 days, and Advent is amywhere between 22 and 28 days long, so these are not true Advent calendars. Just something to think about.

' src=

I think about this EVERY YEAR! So true… it changes every year. The Lenten calendar would always work, but I’d have to update the advent calendar. We’ll see. 🙂

' src=

I cannot wait to ACTUALLY use this this year! I downloaded it and even printed it last year and just never quite got around to it, but this year I am bound and determined to use it with the lapbook idea. 🙂 Keep up the amazing work!

Also, just a quick note: I plan on adding in some of the major saint feast days, both cultural and liturgical. For example, we’re Irish, so St. Patrick’s Day is big, even in Lent and the Feast of St. Joseph is a major Church feast regardless of culture, even in Lent. Just a thought to share 🙂

' src=

I have translated it into Japanese and adapted it for our Sunday School. Thank you so much! (Nagasaka St. Mary’s Church, Yokohama Diocese, Anglican-Episcopal Church in Japan)

I’m sorry that I forgot to write the url

Oh, never mind! Lol!

Can you email it to me in Japanese? That would be awesome!

' src=

You’re website is great! Could you give me some ideas on how to use the calendar? The one idea that comes to mind is coloring a square for each day. Is this how you’d use it?

Either that, or color it all before lent begins and put a sticker on each day.

' src=

I may be revealing my ignorance here, but aren’t there 40 days betweeen Ash Wednesday and Palm Sunday, not Easter Sunday? I mean, shouldn’t Palm Sunday be Day 40 and then Holy Week is 41-46 (or 47 if you number Easter) or something like that? Thanks!

No, there’s more. Isn’t that interesting? I didn’t know until I designed this calendar actually. The Sundays really don’t “count”.

' src=

Oh my GOODNESS! I’m DOUBLY glad I found your site! Totally linking you through my blog if you don’t mind. How fabulous! Your site is such a wonderful resource!!! Blessings to you!

I can’t wait to utilize this for my class tonight – how lucky to have happened across this just in time for class tonight! The Holy Spirit has been kind to me! Thank you!

So glad to hear it! 🙂

' src=

I found you through Pinterest and am so excited to use this calendar with my son this year!!! Thank you SO much for sharing this with us!!!

' src=

It is available in polish, too! http://bawimy-sie.blogspot.com/2011/03/kalendarz-wielkopostny.html

Hi, I was sure I did let you know about my translation a year ago, but now I can not find it in comments…sorry

Cool! Thanks! 🙂

Thank you for the added suggestion. To my delight, our child’s Catholic kinder teacher actually gave your calendar out to her whole class (though she changed out some of the pics). The idea she gave the kids is the following: They colored the calender except for all the squares. Then, for each day of lent, they get to color a square and think of something they can do for God that day. Examples: obeying your mom and dad right away (we REALLY like that one!), giving up treats, playing a game that your sibling likes to play, etc… I have really loved the way the teacher uses your calendar! 🙂

' src=

I love your printable Lenten calendar. I am currently doing placement for my bachelor of education, and I have been using it with my grade 4 class. It has been the perfect focus for Lent. Every day for bell work, the students fill out a square on the calendar with a Lenten activity they have performed. It serves as the focal point for Lenten reflection. Thank you!

' src=

I printed this out to teach my kids more about Lent. They really liked coloring the pictures around the calendar the first day and every day we color in another day for Lent. Since I can’t homeschool them, I get my homeschooling “fix” by doing crafts and activities with them at home after school and on the weekends when I can. Thanks for all of these great Catholic resources. Catholic Icing has helped me so much in teaching my sons about their faith.

' src=

Hi Lacy! Thank you so much for your beautiful Lenten Countdown Calendar! I took your idea and turned it into bulletin board where my first graders can track our Lenten Journeys together. They also keep personal track, using your print out. Thank you so much for all of your great ideas! Best- Laura

' src=

We loved this Calendar! We linked to it in a post to our Facebook page, Facebook.com/CatholicFamilyGifts. Such a great tool for children to get engaged in the Lenten season!

' src=

I followed this link from another blogger (Nicole from Just Like Mary) and I just wanted you to know there’s one more person using your calendar…thank you so very much! It is always nice to meet another Catholic blogger and I look forward to reading more.

' src=

Thank you for the great idea of the lent calendar. I will try to translate it into German!

I have used this calendar for 2 years – but I’ve taken it a step further and have each student follow my instructions for coloring. I use it as a tool to explain Lent and ask questions along the way:

1. Color all the fish GREEN: a. What days do fish appear on the calendar? b. What does it mean? What does Fast and Abstain mean?

2. Color all Sunday’s YELLOW: a. Why aren’t Sunday’s included in the 40 days of Lent? b. Color Palm Sunday yellow, too.

3. Leave Holy Thursday, Holy Saturday and Easter WHITE: a. What color vestments are worn on those days?

4. Color all the days 2 through 37 PURPLE: a. What does the color purple symbolize?

5. Color the words “Lent” and “40 Days” BLUE: a. What is the significance of the number 40?

6. Color Ash Wednesday BROWN: a. What does putting ashes on our foreheads mean? b. Why do we fast from meat and abstain from full meals on this day? c. What are ashes made out of?

7. Outline Palm Sunday and color Good Friday RED: a. Why does Palm Sunday have red around it? b. Why is Good Friday red?

8. Color the “beads” of Holy Week ORANGE:

9. Color the “beads of Triduum BLUE: a. What does Triduum mean?

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for the awesome Lenten Countdown Calendar. It is exactly what my daughter and I were after. What a fantastic way for children to understand and appreciate the process of the Lenten journey. My daughter and I absolutely love CATHOLICICING.COM. Keep up the great work and for sharing such great Catholic resources with the rest of us. God bless you all. xox

Thank you so much for this adorable Lenten calendar! I am the Children’s Ministries Director at Hebron UMC and I will be sticking copies of these in all our kid’s worship bags this Wednesday. 🙂

' src=

Thanks for the Lenten calendar. I am a convert and tools like your calendar make my faith journey SO much more meaningful! L:ove your site, too!

' src=

Thank you for this excellent resource.

' src=

Thanks for this – last year I used it with my choir kids – we were working on a song about giving of ourselves for Lent. They took it home with the goal of doing a good deed for someone each day. As a reward, their parent gave them a nickel for each good deed which they taped to the calendar. At Easter, we collected the calendars and used the money to purchase Spanish Bibles which we sent on a mission trip to South America.

This year I’m going to use them to talk about, instead of giving up something for God, giving God something. Each day I want them to focus on giving God their love by setting aside a special prayer time. After they pray, they can tape a coin on the calendar. On Easter I’ll have them give their offering to God by putting their coin-covered calendar into the offering plate.

' src=

I had forgotten I had this pinned, until someone else repinned it! I was trying to come up with a “daily” project, and I already had one! When my son received ashes yesterday, the extraordinary minister simply said, “Follow Jesus,” and I wanted to tie into that. This is perfect!

' src=

Is there any Palm Sunday Activities? I want to teach my first graders about lent. I wanted a picture with words that I can easily explain to them about Palm Sunday

Here are my Palm Sunday posts: http://www.catholicicing.com/category/palm-sunday/

' src=

I have been using this in my religious education classes for the last few years and haven’t yet found a truly successful way for the kids to list/reflect what they had done each day….anyone have some ideas to share please? I have them glue it into a manila file folder, then color and cut out a picture of Jesus to adorn the front of the folder.

' src=

Dziękuję. Nie będę tłumaczyć kalendarza dzieciaki przy okazji pouczą się angielskiego. Pozdrowienia z Polski – Thank you.

I have been using this for Lent this year, and my son (age 3) is so excited about getting to go “all the way up” to Easter. Thank you so much for sharing!

' src=

I made a Hungarian version of the calendar. Thanks very much!

' src=

Thank you so much for this. I have been trying to think of gentle ways to encourage spirituality in my seven year old son, and there’s nothing like “counting down” to inspire children’s devotion to a cause. <3 El

' src=

I’m LOVin this! Thanks for making our homeschooling life a bit easier!

' src=

Wow, thanks a lot for thinking of us non-Englishspeakers. I’ll translate it into Danish as soon as possible.

' src=

Thanks for a wonderful product. It was very thoughtful of you to include a blank one and a translation as well. The only thing is that priest in Puerto Rico called the Holly Saturday sábado Santo. We no longer called it sábado de Gloria.

' src=

I was planning to create a calendar for my second grade Faith Formation class but decided to check out your site before starting from scratch. And there was the most perfect calendar with visual cues, in a variety of languages and presentations. You are so very gifted and I love how you share your many gifts and talents so openly and freely with the world. You are carrying out God’s plan and you definitely make such a difference in the world. The ripple effect of your ideas and creativity is so far reaching. Thank you so much.

' src=

I just love your content. It is so accessible and developmentally appropriate! Thanks for sharing!

' src=

Wauw, you added a Dutch version, wonderfull! greetings from Belgium!

' src=

I am so glad I found your site. I teach ESL to children in Poland at a private faith school, although I am not Christian myself. Your lessons and material are wonderful as they are not only engaging, but you explain everything clearly and in a way that I know I can help my students gain new language skills that reflect their faith – Thank you 😀

' src=

Thank you for the Lenten Calendar. Our youngest is coloring copies for his older brothers…so sweet! God Bless You! <3

Awwww so cute! I’m glad ya’ll are enjoying it 🙂

' src=

Thank you for the Lent calendar! This is just what I needed for my First Grade Faith formation class tomorrow. It’s perfect!

' src=

I love many of your ideas and was happy to subscribe, however, I have to accept Ask.com as my default browser in order to access any of your “free” printables. Are you aware of this?

' src=

I wonder if you inadvertently clicked on an ad or something that took you somewhere else, as you should absolutely not have to use a particular web browser to be able to access printables from the site. All free printables either have a link in the post that takes you right to the printable, or they are free for subscribers, and so you’ll need to subscribe to the weekly newsletter to receive them. This particular printable is one that is free for subscribers, so you’ll need to sign up for the newsletter to get access to the subscribers’ page.

I hope that helps!

I can’t find the link to print the lentern calendar – please help !

Hi Louise –

The link is on the subscriber page. You’ll need to make sure that you have subscribed to the weekly newsletter. If you have, you can look toward the bottom of any of the regular weekly newsletters (or the welcome email) and you’ll find the link and password.

If you have not subscribed, you can do so toward the top of this post or through this link that goes directly to the sign-up form: http://madmimi.com/signups/148093/join

Dear Lacy, I came across your site via Jared D or some similar and like it very much. I fell in love 😉 with your calendar (and a lot of other things too) So I translated it into Slovak and send it to you.

God bless you and your family, for all the things you do and all the good you share 🙂

Good Lent and then Happy Easter 🙂

' src=

I am unable to download the calendar. I have submitted my email address many times to subscribe. I’ve subscribed in the past because I currently get emails from you. How can I access the Lent resources for kids?

Hi Kelly –

It looks like you’ve been an email subscriber since February 2018, so if you’re trying to sign up again, you won’t get an additional welcome email because you already got that when you subscribed three years ago.

However, there is a link to the subscriber page with a password at the end of all of the newsletters. So, make sure to check out any newsletter you might have and scroll to the bottom for the link and password.

' src=

Wow, you made it in Bahasa Indonesia, too! We can use it for next year Lenten then. Thanks to God and thanks to you for being a blessed mom for others. Keep doing a blessing work Lacy. Jesus bless you and your family.

Finding Grace-Filled Confidence in the Chaos

Free Printable Lent Calendar 2024

Strengthen your family’s Christian faith with our fun and engaging printable Lenten calendar. This calendar is the perfect way to count down the days of Lent with even your youngest children!

This free resource helps your children understand the true meaning of Lent and why the daily practices of prayer and sacrifice are important for us as Christians.

lent journey printable

Yes, you can use this calendar to observe Lent even if you aren’t Catholic! Many protestant churches celebrate this season in the church year, including my own.

As part of a Bible-believing congregation, we embrace the traditions of Lent because we recognize that we are all in need of seasons of deeper repentance and reflection.

Lent helps our family to understand not only our sins but also Jesus’ deep love for us and His sacrifice for our sins on the cross. It leads us to have greater joy in the Resurrection!

That is why this free printable Lent calendar I created involves daily activities that deepen our faith and our appreciation for Jesus our Savior:

  • Find the instructions for the Crown of Thorns craft mentioned in the calendar over at Catholic Icing .
  • Find the instructions for the Lamb of God Cotton Ball craft mentioned in the calendar on my blog (#3 on the post) .
  • Coin crosses craft mentioned in the calendar
  • Recipe for Prayer Pretzels from the calendar
  • Don’t Forget to Remember book that was mentioned in the calendar
  • Printable Easter cards mentioned in the calendar
Looking for Christian movie suggestions (one of the ideas on the calendar)? Try The Chosen! Some of my cousins are in season 3, episodes 7 and 8 as part of the crowd eating the loaves and fishes! You could watch one episode as a family throughout Lent.

One caution: Lent is not about “walking with Jesus” in the sense that we are capable of being like Him. The Christian life is more about “following Christ” because though we are always striving to have more of Him and less of ourselves on display, we are never capable of being perfect as He is.

lent activities for families

Instead, our Lenten journey involves following Jesus with an understanding of our need for repentance and our dependence on the Savior. That is what can make the season of Lent meaningful and beneficial for our families and churches!

Using the Lenten Countdown Calendar

The calendar begins on Ash Wednesday and goes through Holy Week. It ends with Resurrection Sunday denoted on the bottom of the calendar.

It is undated, so you can use it for any year. But if you’re looking for specifics, this season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, February 14, 2024!

There are 40 days of Lent, but 46 days to color in on the calendar (including coloring in the letters for Resurrection Sunday at the bottom). Why? Because traditionally, Sundays do not count toward the number of days of Lent.

As you color in the Sundays as part of the countdown to Easter Sunday, note that they are not part of the true “40 days”. Sundays are a break from our “mourning and fasting” traditions of the Lenten season.

How to Get the Printable Lenten Calendar

You can download the calendar at the end of this post. Look for the subscribe box and sign up via email. You will soon receive an email with a link to the Lenten Countdown Calendar.

Once you do, simply print it out and have your children color in a box for each day of Lent (and Sundays too).

For each day, there are simple activities to help us focus our hearts and minds on God’s world, on Jesus and on others around us.

Our family will be using it this year and reading the Scripture verses from our Lent Bible Reading Plan at the same time. We will also incorporate our Lenten Prayer Chain prayers each day.

If you’d like to buy all three of these printable items as a bundle instead of subscribing for my emails, you can purchase that in our shop ! The only email you’ll receive from me will contain your bundle download.

Different Ways to Use Our Free Calendar During Lent

  • Print one copy for each child in your home. They can hang it up on the fridge or in their room as a reminder of the season. You can use it alongside our Lenten printable prayer chain (scroll down to subscribe for that item). These two activities are powerful tools to use to help your children understand the true meaning of this season.
  • Use this printable calendar with your Sunday school classroom as well. Make as many copies as you need and send them home with your students before Lent begins, giving your families some brief instructions.
  • Hang up your calendar at your work desk and see if anyone notices and asks you about Lent!

Download this free resource: a 40-day printable Lenten calendar that will help you count down the days to Resurrection Sunday by subscribing to my blog in the box at the end of this post.

Please see the end of this post for what to do if you’re using this for your church or classroom..

What are the 40 days of Lent 2024?

The 40 days of Lent in 2023 go from February 14, 2024 to March 30, 2024, not counting the Sundays during this season of the church year. Sundays do not count because they are not considered days of sorrow and repentance.

lent journey printable

Description

I teach Kindergarten in a Catholic school and every year I struggle to find an activity for my students to do to help them understand what Lent is all about. I teach my students that Lent is a time to get ready for Easter by trying to become better versions of ourselves. So, I created this Lenten Journey as an activity for students to do during the 40 days of Lent.

Each day students color a square and try to complete the task listed on that square. Start at the beginning and color a square each day until you get to Easter. The tasks include activities like "Help Clean," "Pray for Someone," "Compliment Someone," etc.

I have included a few different versions of the Lenten Journey. I know that many Catholic schools have one day a week where the whole school goes to Mass. Where I teach, we go to Mass on Fridays, so I made a Lenten Journey where our task on Fridays is to go to Mass and do the best we can to participate. I have included versions where the “Go to Mass” task is on other days of the week to match what your school does. I have also included a version where there is not a “Go to Mass” task in case your school does not have this opportunity.

-Lenten Journey where “Go to Mass” is on Monday

-Lenten Journey where “Go to Mass” is on Tuesday

-Lenten Journey where “Go to Mass” is on Wednesday

-Lenten Journey where “Go to Mass” is on Thursday

-Lenten Journey where “Go to Mass” is on Friday

-Lenten Journey with no “Go to Mass” task

-Weekly Reflection Page

-Editable PowerPoint version of the Lenten Journey where you can change the text in each box

Check out the preview for more information.
