BECOMING A MAN

The Journey to Authentic Masculinity

The Journey from Boyhood to Manhood

by Danny Eley | Front Page , Manhood

journey to manhood

Growing up isn’t a one-time event. It’s a continuous and evolving journey, and one of the most significant transitions a male undergoes is the shift from boyhood to manhood. In the chaos of life and societal expectations, this path can often be obscured and daunting. The hard truth is, becoming a man goes beyond physical maturity. It’s about emotional growth, mental resilience, and forging your moral compass. It’s about learning the true meaning of responsibility, accountability, and respect, not just for others, but for oneself too.

The Road Less Traveled: Recognizing the Journey Ahead

One can’t transform overnight. The metamorphosis from boyhood to manhood is a path laid with trials, triumphs, and lots of learning. It’s a journey where your virtues will be tested and your resilience will be challenged. Society may have painted a glamorous image of manhood with raw strength, grit, and power, but true manhood is much more nuanced. It’s about demonstrating respect, showing vulnerability, understanding emotions, and not shying away from expressing them.

  • Embrace Emotional Maturity: In a world that often equates masculinity with stoicism, breaking away from this stereotype requires courage. Emotions aren’t a sign of weakness; they’re a reflection of your humanity. Real men do feel, and they aren’t afraid to show it. Whether it’s tears of joy or of sorrow, allowing yourself to truly feel and express your emotions is an indicator of emotional maturity. It’s about acknowledging your feelings, understanding them, and expressing them in a healthy and respectful manner. It’s about breaking the shackles of outdated machismo and realizing that strength isn’t about suppressing emotions, but embracing them.
  • Acknowledge Responsibility: One of the most significant milestones on the road to manhood is the ability to take responsibility. This means not only taking charge of your actions but also owning up to their consequences. It’s about understanding that every decision you make, every action you take has repercussions that you must stand up to. Whether it’s a mistake you’ve made or a success you’ve earned, taking responsibility is a sign of growing maturity and integrity.
  • Respect Others: Respect is a two-way street. If you wish to be respected, you must learn to respect others first. This means treating everyone, regardless of their background, beliefs, or status, with kindness and understanding. It’s about valuing other people’s rights, feelings, and ideas. Every person you meet has their own story, their own struggles, and their own dreams. Recognizing and respecting this is a vital step towards true manhood.
  • Self-Care and Health: Manhood isn’t just about mental and emotional growth. Taking care of your physical health is equally important. Regular exercise, balanced nutrition, and adequate sleep are critical components of overall well-being. These habits will not only keep you in good health but also instill discipline and dedication, traits that are integral to your growth as a man.
  • Foster Patience and Understanding: Life is a journey, not a sprint. It’s filled with ups and downs, victories and losses, triumphs and mistakes. Understanding that it’s okay to falter, that it’s okay to not have all the answers is a sign of growth. Be patient with yourself and with others. Remember, the path to manhood isn’t about perfection; it’s about growth and learning.
  • Find Your Passion: Lastly, part of growing up is discovering who you are and what you’re passionate about. This passion, this drive could be the very thing that gives your life direction and purpose. It could be anything from art to business, from sports to science. Find what sets your soul on fire, and embrace it. Your passion could become your roadmap, guiding you on your journey to manhood.

The Final Ascent: Claiming Your Manhood

The shift from boyhood to manhood is a journey filled with challenges and discoveries. Embracing these steps won’t necessarily make the journey easier, but it will definitely make it more rewarding. Remember, becoming a man isn’t a destination; it’s a continuous journey of growth, learning, and self-discovery.

Crossing the threshold from boyhood to manhood isn’t marked by a grand ceremony or an age milestone. It’s a personal journey, unique to every individual. It’s a journey where you grow, evolve, and transform at your own pace. The most significant marker of this transition is perhaps when you start embodying the traits of responsibility, respect, and emotional maturity, when you start living by your virtues and standing by your principles.

The shift from boyhood to manhood can be a turbulent, uncertain journey, but with the right guidance and perseverance, it is a rewarding and transformative one. Remember, becoming a man isn’t about fitting into society’s rigid boxes. It’s about becoming the best version of yourself, standing tall in your truth, and leading a life of respect, responsibility, and love.

Inspirational Quotes for Boys on Their Journey to Manhood

journey to manhood

There’s a lot that can be said about raising a young boy and no shortage of quotes for boys dedicated to these little thrill seekers.

“The true measure of a man is how he treats someone who can do him absolutely no good.” — Samuel Johnson
“There are two ways of spreading light. To be the candle, or the mirror that reflects it.” — Edith Wharton
“The world has the habit of making room for the man whose words and actions show that he knows where he is going.” — Napoleon Hill

“We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.” ― Oscar Wilde, Lady Windermere’s Fan
“There comes a time in every rightly constructed boy’s life that he has a raging desire to go somewhere and dig for hidden treasure.” — Mark Twain

The task of raising a young boy is never an easy one. Boys are mischievous thrill seekers and lovers of adventure, always out to explore the world regardless of the dangers and uncertainties. Even the most diligent of parents can find themselves chasing after an over-zealous little boy who’s ready to take on the world , even if he’s ill-equipped to do it!

It’s not the job of parents to squash this sense of adventure, but instead to encourage it. By helping your son explore the world and dive into the unknown adventure of life, you’re preparing him to become a man . His adventures and lessons as a boy will stay with him as he grows up, helping to shape the man he becomes.

One of the best things any parent can do for their growing son is to help him navigate the world by giving him the characteristics that life will demand of him. Through lessons at an early age and wise quotes for boys, you can instill in him the traits that will come to define him as he begins to make his way in the world.

There are a lot of things you can teach your son in his early, formative years. The best lessons you can pass along to him are those that will help him flourish as an individual. Help him realize that life will always be an adventure and equip him with the traits and mindset needed to make sure he enjoys it fearlessly, even deep into his adult years.

Quotes for boys as a source of joy

Raising a young boy has been a source of joy and frustration for parents since the beginning of time—just read the stories about a young Teddy Roosevelt or listen to the escapades of Steve Irwin as a boy!

There’s no end to the funny boy quotes that recount the trials of raising a young man.

But raising a little boy is about more than just putting up with his endless mischief and troublemaking— it’s also about giving him the qualities he needs to make it in the world as a man . Take a look at some of the lessons worth teaching him:

While you skim through these quotes for boys, keep in mind your own son and the traits that he embodies. You might just find a few quotes that resonate with him and that inspire him to be the best version of himself as he grows up.

Boy quotes to cherish your younger years

From the moment your son is born, he’s an adventurer. Each item his tiny hands grasp, each inch he eventually crawls and every new noise he makes is a foray into the unknown. He never stops exploring ! And while every day brings something new, it also means there’s a little less mystery in the world for both you and him.

It’s why so many baby boy quotes remind us to cherish the young years of childhood .

It’s important to let your little boy be just that: a little boy. Let him explore and get into trouble. Let him take chances and explore new things. It can be easy to try and keep him in a bubble, where he’ll never skin his knees or break his arm but without the opportunity to adventure, he might not grow up with the confidence he needs to make it in the world.

Cherish the younger years, but don’t deprive your son of adventure. There’s so much out there for him to discover and so much exploring to be done!

Instead, share quotes for little boys that encourage your son to be his adventurous self, but always remind him of the consequences of his actions. When he’s young, it’s okay to make mistakes, as they’ll help him avoid bigger mistakes with bigger consequences later in life.

Quotes for boys help share that he should never be afraid of hard work

The world was built by the hands of men who weren’t afraid to put them to work. Calloused hands are the hands of someone who has made something of themselves by working hard to earn their place in the world.

It’s important for your son to carry on this tradition: a tradition of being a good, hard worker .

Some of the most important boy quotes are those that encourage a young man to embrace work, rather than reject it. Teach him to do a good job and be willing to work hard. Help him find value in a job well done and instill in him a pride for doing good work.

All of these traits will take him as far as he wants to go in life, because there’s always work to be done. When he steps up to take on the job, he’ll distinguish himself as someone worth the reward of that job.

The right quotes for boys’ attitude can teach your son to embrace any work he does, whether he’s swinging an ax or typing in computer code. Teach him that every job has value and that every job deserves to be done to completion. As he learns to welcome work, he’ll slowly become a provider for himself, his future spouse and the family that will come to revere him in the future.

Respect is earned when it’s given

Respect is among the most important and influential traits you can teach your son. Respect for others will get him far in life and eventually, earn him the respect of those around him. Teaching him how to say ‘please’ and ‘thank you,’ and to act with courtesy and kindness towards others is a sign that he values those around him.

This respect will propel him into high esteem with all those who know him.

The best quotes for boys also teach him respect in a different sense: respect for things that don’t directly command it. Teach him to value and appreciate all things and he’ll be the example that other people admire. For example, respecting the property he owns by keeping a tidy lawn or respecting a grocery store cashier he may never speak to again show the markings of a gentleman and a person worth knowing .

There are many quotes about boys being jerks, too. Use these as an example to show your son how not to behave. The world will always be filled with people who lack respect or believe it’s due to them for no reason. Teach your son to stand apart from these individuals and retain his sense of respect and honor at all times.

Always make your voice heard

Your son doesn’t have to have a deep, booming voice to be heard. Instead, teach him to make himself heard through the insightful words he speaks. Some of the best boy quotes from mommy are those that teach him how to articulate himself.

If everyone else is shouting, he can stand apart by calmly delivering a measured appeal. His voice may not be loud, but it will be powerful and respected.

Teaching your son to make his voice heard is an inspirational exercise, because it helps him make sense of the world he’s always trying so hard to explore. Help him learn how to examine things and question them , and how to frame those questions to get the attention of others. Make sure he knows how to object to injustice and propose solutions. And, teach him how to learn about and convey his feelings directly and honestly.

All of these things will make sure his voice is heard and that people pay attention when he speaks, because he will be saying things worth hearing.

Do your best in everything you pursue

Your son may know exactly what he wants to do with his life from the moment he learns how to speak or it might take him a lifetime to figure it out! Whatever he does decide to pursue, make sure he’s pursuing it whole-heartedly and passionately.

Be sure to read him inspirational quotes for boys that show the power of passionate pursuit of one’s dreams .

More than just pursing what he’s interested in, make sure your boy puts his best foot forward. He doesn’t necessarily have to be the very best at everything he does, but he should make an effort or attempt with no reservations.

A life filled with hesitation is a life filled with regrets, make sure your son has neither.

Instead, let him know that even if he fails at something, it’s worth doing fully and completely. At least you know you tried your very best if you come up short.

There are many quotes for boys that talk about success. Let your son know that success is defined by each and every person , and it comes when you invest yourself in whatever you do.

Your team may not win the game, but if you played your heart out during the game, it’s a personal success that has a profound effect on your sense of self.

Recognize the important things in life

A lesson every parent should teach to their son is the value of knowing what’s important in life. Read little boy quotes from mommy to illustrate where the true meaning of value is and what forms it takes. As an adult it might take the form of cars and money, but as a child the concept is so much simpler: it’s your family, friends and experiences.

Instilling a sense of sentimentality in your son will make sure he remembers the important things throughout his life , even as he accumulates material goods.

A focus on recognizing the important things in life can lead to inspirational developments in your son. For example, he might dedicate himself to a job he’s passionate about, rather than one that offers more money. Or, he might live modestly so he can travel the world, making memories with his significant other.

Understanding life’s most important treasures from an early age will make sure your son prioritizes his adult life. And, it means he won’t compromise who he is or what he values for all of life’s temptations, of which few have little true value.

Never leave your dreams behind

Your son, the adventurer, will eventually have to grow up. The most important thing you can do as a parent is to make sure he’s raised in such a way that he never loses his thirst for exploration.

Whether it’s changing jobs to pursue a new passion, moving to a new part of the world or meeting new friends, he should always embrace adventure and never shy away from the unknown .

Taking the time to read him inspirational boy quotes from a young age will ensure his thirst for adventure is never quenched and that he views the world with eager eyes. Even when he’s grown up and established as his own man, he’ll carry with him the lessons he learned as a young boy.

He might not be skinning his knees or breaking any more bones as an adult, but he’ll certainly be reaping the rewards of a fruitful and fulfilling life .

Make sure your son always knows that his dreams are within reach. You’ve given him strong traits and instilled within him the teachings he needs to do anything he wants to. All he needs to do is go out there and pursue them! He’s likely to find that, thanks to his boyhood adventuring and the lessons you’ve left him with, the world is still full of opportunities to explore and discover .

We hope you were inspired by the above inspirational quotes for boys, which are part of our family quotes series.

manhood

What is a real man? How do I raise one?

We’ve discussed this topic on the show before and today we’re going to dive a little deeper into what is involved in raising strong, courageous young men.

Today we’re going to be looking at a book called Raising a Modern Day Knight by Robert Lewis. All the information we discuss today are ideas from this book. This book was written specifically for Dads, so there is a lot of emphasis on the roles that men play in the life of our sons.  But I think there is a lot of important information for us as moms to apply as well. (If nothing else but to encourage our husbands to read the book!)

BUY THE BOOK ON AMAZON HERE (Affiliate link).

Robert Lewis emphasizes the important role of a father in our boys’ lives.  Only a man can teach his son to be a man. Father’s need to be present and intentional about imparting a biblical vision for manhood and answering some of our boy’s questions, like:

  • What is a man?
  • What are a man’s responsibilities?
  • What does a man believe?
  • How does a man behave?

Some of you may be feeling discouraged already that your son’s father may not be present or as involved in your son’s life as you’d like him to be, or maybe he isn’t taking on the role of spiritual leadership in your family.  Hang in there… I have some encouragement for you at the end of this podcast.  But in the meantime, don’t underestimate the role a mom can play in impacting her son’s walk with the Lord).   ** Actually, this encouragement will now be in EPISODE 31 of Redeeming the Chaos… stick around! **

Lewis compares the process of becoming a man to the process of becoming a Knight. In medieval times, knights had a clear path to manhood  – first a page, then a squire, then a knight. Their journey to manhood was marked by ceremonies and responsibilities.

In our modern culture today, we have lost the value of ceremonies and rites of passage. Our boys don’t have a clear vision for what it looks like to be a godly man, nor do they have a plan to get there.

3 BUILDING BLOCKS OF MANHOOD

building blocks of manhood

Lewis suggests there are 3 essential building blocks for our boys to enter manhood. We’ll discuss each of these in more detail below.

  • A vision for manhood
  • A Code of conduct
  • A Transcendent cause

BUILDING BLOCK #1 – A VISION FOR MANHOOD

Lewis outlines 4 principles that need to be included in a vision for manhood.  He encourages families to adapt this list to fit the needs of your own family.

  • A real man rejects passivity.
  • A real man accepts responsibility.
  • A real man leads courageously.
  • A real man expects the greater reward.

Lewis would rehearse these principles with his sons and explain to them what it looked like to be a real man. From a young age, his sons had a vision for manhood.

A practical challenge for parents:

  • Preferably involve Dad in this process!
  • Write a definition of manhood for your sons
  • Memorize this definition together when your son turns 13.
  • Plan a manhood weekend with sons and other fathers
  • Hold a manhood ceremony

Ressler Family:

My husband and I wrote out our own vision for manhood, in words our young boys could easily comprehend.  It’s never too early to start teaching your son what it means to be a man.

A strong, courageous man:

  • Does the right thing
  • Shows honor and compassion
  • Loves Jesus

This past summer my husband took our oldest son, who will be 11 this month, on a special father-son excursion to a ropes course. At some point during the day, they discussed this vision together and what it looks like to become a man.  We plan to have many more of these ceremonies and discussions with each of our four boys as they grow.

BUILDING BLOCK #2 – A CODE OF CONDUCT

code of conduct for manhood

We as parents can no longer rely on our culture to uphold the values and beliefs we hold as a family.  Parents should impart a code of conduct, establish boundaries and reinforce the truth of God’s Word at home.

3 parts of code of conduct :

1. A Will to Obey (God’s will)

“True satisfaction in life is directly proportional to one’s obedience to God.” (p.68, Raising a Modern Day Knight).

Our family handbook for life should be the Bible. Make a list of biblical ideals or values that you want to uphold in your family. Lewis suggests a list of 10 ideals, all backed with biblical truth:

Servant-leadership

Self-discipline

Perseverance

You can of course come up with your own list of values that you would like to focus on in your family.  In my family, we decided to focus on 5 core family values:

  • Do your best

I created graphics that I have printed out and displayed in our home, along with a Bible verse to go along with each one. If you would like to adopt these same 5 values in your home, you’re welcome to download the graphics for free!

DOWNLOAD YOUR SET OF FAMILY VALUE GRAPHICS

family-values

There are 4 ways a father trains his son to obey God’s word:

  • By setting a godly example.
  • By teaching spiritual truth. Treating faith not just as an event, but as a lifestyle.
  • By sharing stories of real men demonstrating bravery, courage and sacrifice.
  • Through affirmation, attention and discipline.

“When a son does something right, the wise father phrases his character as well as his behavior; when he does something wrong, the wise father takes time to correct and instruct first, disciplining only as a last resort.”  (p.73, Raising a Modern Day Knight).

2. A Work to Do

The second part of the Code of Conduct is to teach our boys that they have a work to do. A calling in life. As parents, we have a responsibility to help our boys identify their unique gifts and abilities to use both in a chosen profession as well as in service for the Kingdom of God and the church.  We also need to instill a strong work ethic in our children.

3. A Woman to Love

  • We want to prepare our boys to succeed in marriage, if they choose to get married.
  • We need to teach our boys how to treat women with respect and honor.
  • We want to help our boys learn to love, lead, honor and provide for their future wives.
  • We need to teach our boys God’s design for marriage and family from a biblical perspective.

Practical Steps for Parents:

  • Establish a written code of conduct for your family — a list of biblical values. Feel free to download the list of family values that I made .  You will receive a set of 6 printable graphics with 5 family values and accompanying scripture passages.
  • Discern natural giftings of your child and affirm and encourage them.
  • If you need some ideas of how to get started with family devotions, or maybe you just need some inspiration or new ideas, I have a free ebook for you called “How to Engage Your Kids in Family Devotions.”

BUILDING BLOCK #3 — A TRANSCENDENT CAUSE

journey to manhood

Robert Lewis defines a transcendent cause as “A mission that lifts us beyond ourselves, a passion that stirs us to a self-sacrifice and causes us to contribute to the larger community… It is not something we do in addition to everything else; instead, it is the one factor that motivates everything else we do…. True satisfaction in life is impossible without a transcendent cause.”  (p. 85, Raising a Modern Day Knight).

Lewis says that a transcendent cause must be:

  • Truly heroic – calling for bravery and sacrifice
  • Timeless – it has significance beyond the moment
  • Supremely meaningful

It’s important for us as parents to give our sons a vision outside of themselves; a vision for something outside of their own circumstances and feelings.

Lewis believes, and I would whole-heartedly agree, that the ultimate transcendent cause in our boys’ lives (and our lives as well) is a relationship with Jesus. It is so important, therefore, that we cultivate our son’s relationship with God.

There are many ways to do this.

  • Father-son Bible study
  • Praying together
  • Family devotions
  • Talk about your faith on a regular basis
  • Let your sons see how you and your husband are using your gifts to serve in God’s Kingdom.

If you want some ideas on how to get started with family devotions or Bible studies, I mentioned earlier a free resource I have for you called “How to Engage Your Kids in Family Devotions.”

Journey to Manhood Program

Journey to Manhood participant family, 2022.

Contemporary Rite of Passage

Journey to Manood ('J2M') is a program that dives deeply into the real issues facing families with teenage boys today. Many families have benefited from the powerful experience of father and son spending 5 days in the bush with other men and boys (13-16yrs). This is precious technology-free time to do something memorable for your family. Mothers are very much a part of this program too, at community departure and welcoming home ceremonies.

The Next Camp Dates 24/09/2024 10:30 - 28/09/2024 15:00

Whilst the camp is 5 days, the J2M program includes a parents evening a week or 2 prior to the camp as well as a Sunday afternoon reunion 2 weeks after the camp. This supports all family members to integrate the benefits of the program into their day to day lives. During this 3-4 week period we use 4 venues and 18 staff to co-ordinate this once in a lifetime experience. Young men passing through the program can then return on subsequent camps in support of the next group of families (plenty of dads do this too!). Young men stepping into their leadership and service to community regularly comment how much this experience has given them the confidence and the motivation to walk the pathway to healthy adulthood.

ALL families benefit from this positive, powerful and unique experience. Journey to Manhood creates and acknowledges the boy-to-man shift 'from dependence into service' and enables families to build a new foundation for their future. This is a real-life game-changer!

j2m outdoor kitchen

What this Program is

  • A unique opportunity for each boy to be challenged, honoured and supported to be the best he can be
  • A blessing for all boys to confidently set their sails for the calm and the rough seas that life will present them
  • A line in the sand that clearly denotes childhood and the freedom & responsibilities that come with adulthood
  • Door-openers to all the necessary conversations boys need to have with older men
  • A re-setting of intentions and commitments
  • The very necessary reshaping of relationships when moving from parenting a boy, to parenting a young man

What this Program is not

  • This is not just for boys at risk. This is for all boys whether struggling or doing well
  • Tree hugging naked dancing in the bush. Nature is a powerful ally and we keep it clothed and real
  • Touchy, feely, weird and 'woo-woo'. It is grounded and powerful, certainly different because it needs to be to effect such change
  • 'Churchy' or religious-based. There is no religious affiliation or bias. Families from all walks of life are very welcome.

Parent Testimonies

Listen to what these parents thought of their families' experience on the journey to manhood program.

The mothers component of the Journey to Manhood program is critical in the outstanding outcomes achieved. More than lip service to letting their sons grow up, the women are guided on a journey of their own that builds strong bonds and allows the male component of the program to really flourish.

Would you like to see more?

Powerhouse Programs invited parents of completed programs to give their video testimonies and we've published to Vimeo.
