According to our pros, cruise weddings can work for a variety of different couples and styles. However, it’s best for those who don’t mind letting go of the details and keeping things simple. “From the flowers to the music, cruise weddings tend to be simple and you likely won’t have many choices to pick from, if any,” says Heather. In terms of wedding size, cruise ship weddings tend to work for smaller guest lists —but some cruises can accommodate larger party sizes. Cruise weddings also can be ideal for couples who don’t want any guests at all , and who want to combine their wedding or elopement with a unique honeymoon experience.

What are the cost differences between a cruise ship wedding and an “on-land” destination wedding?

“The traditional destination wedding is more costly, but you get a lot more options, more security—you are not at the whim of the sea—and you can have more people,” says Heather. “Cruise weddings, first you have to pay for the cruise itself, and then the wedding package. Some companies offer à la carte options, which can add up quickly. You will also have to pay for license fees, which vary by cruise line, per package, per location if you’re getting married on shore.”

How do cruise weddings work? Do couples typically get married on the ship or at a port?

It’s up to you. Some couples choose to get married on the ship before it departs, while others get married on land at a destination port. “If friends and family cannot afford to take the cruise but can be at the wedding, then having it on ship prior to sailing would be the logical choice,” says Frank. “If friends and family can go on the cruise, then there is nothing like being married in a tropical garden or on the beach in a Caribbean island.”

Can you legally get married on a cruise ship?

You’ll have to take note of legal requirements when it comes to getting married on a cruise ship or on land. Some countries have residency requirements, meaning you have to reside on the island for a certain period of time in order to legally marry there—not possible if you’re just making a cruise stop. Of course, you could legally marry in your home country before your cruise and have a symbolic wedding at the port. When it comes to getting married on a cruise ship, you’ll need to follow the laws of the country where the ship is registered. So you can easily marry on certain cruise lines’ ships, while there are others where you can’t. Be sure to do your research, talk to a travel agent who specializes in weddings , and apply for licenses far in advance.

How long of a cruise typically works best for a wedding.

If you’re planning on combining your wedding with a honeymoon, a five to seven-day cruise will likely be ideal. “If the wedding party can sail along with the couple, then the party continues for the entire cruise and that could also be a very memorable event for all,” says Frank.

Which wedding details will a cruise arrange? What is the couple responsible for?

If you’re getting married on the ship, the cruise will typically provide a wedding coordinator with their package. “Generally, the cruise line includes the flowers, music, photographer, and officiant (this could be the captain) in the packages, though some of these might cost extra,” says Heather. “The couple is responsible for, but not limited to, registering for their marriage license, their attire, and the invitations .” If you’re getting married on land, you’ll be responsible for arranging all of the details—and it’s recommended to hire a planner at your wedding location to ensure that everything goes smoothly.

Are there any times of year that should be avoided when it comes to cruise weddings?

“This depends on the destination of your cruise,” says Heather. “The Caribbean’s hurricane season is from June 1 through November 30, so I would avoid booking during this time period as to not have to deal with any unpredicted storms . The Greek Islands generally close for the off-season. Alaska cruises have a particular set of dates when they allow cruises.” Frank notes that holidays and the family vacation season (summer) can be quite expensive and crowded and might not be the best for a cruise wedding.

What are some popular cruise locations for weddings?

The Caribbean is most popular, but again, be aware of residency requirements before booking. St. Thomas, Puerto Rico, the Bahamas, Jamaica, and St. Lucia tend to be popular. But don’t limit yourself to warm-weather locations! Why not try Alaska? Says Heather: “How many people can say they got married on a glacier?” There are also U.S.-based cruises, such as ones that sail along the New England and Canadian coastlines during the fall. Or for something completely different, the famed Queen Mary 2 offers weddings as it sails across the Atlantic Ocean!

Also, if you’re getting married at sea by a ship’s captain, your wedding ceremony can’t be held on embarkation day or night and will need to take place between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. in order for the ship’s staff to be able to properly perform their duties.

20 Things to know when planning a cruise ship wedding

Cruise ship weddings can be fun, simple, and affordable. Check out the things you should know before planning a cruise ship wedding! Did you know that the average wedding in the United States cost over $20,000? I personally had my wedding on a cruise ship and I loved it! A cruise wedding can be as cheap as $1500-$7000 depending on what you want and how many people will be attending. You can also add things and still have an amazing wedding on a budget. A wedding on a cruise ship is a great way to save money, time, and is a very unique way to tie the knot! I have created this cruise ship wedding guide for anyone looking for perspective and tips on tying the knot on board a cruise ship.

20 Things to know when planning a cruise ship wedding

1.) Reserve in advance

With any wedding whether land or sea, reserve in advance because you may not be the only couple considering a certain wedding date. Also, you want to book your cruise vacation in advance to avoid it being sold out.

2.)Your Wedding can be at a port or destination venue

I had my wedding in Miami before the cruise set sail. You can choose to have your wedding on the ship in your home port before it sets sail or at another port like the Caribbean, Mexico, Hawaii etc. Keep in mind that you can not have your wedding while the cruise is actually sailing on the ocean because a legal marriage has to be within a country. Also, know that you can renew your vows on a cruise if you are already married!

3.)Pick the right cruise for you

For most ships they will require you to book your cruise vacation first before starting any wedding planning so keep this in mind. Also, every ship is different with different cruise lengths and things to offer so you will want to pick the cruise ship that matches your personality. I personally chose to have a wedding on Carnival cruise because it offered affordable wedding packages compared to other ships and I chose a 7 day cruise because it was not too long or too short. A 4 day cruise is also a great option.

4.) Get the balcony suite

You will be saving some major bucks on your wedding, so you will have some extra cash to get an ocean view suite with a balcony. I would highly recommend getting a balcony suite because it is more spacious and waking up to different views every morning will be very romantic.

5) Bring marriage license

You will need to get your marriage license prior to the wedding. After the wedding ceremony the newly married couple, their witnesses, and clergy will sign the marriage license. It will be up to the couple to file it with the courts after the wedding so that it will be legal.

6) Non-cruising family members can attend wedding

Even if your family members will not be passengers on the ship, they can still be in attendance to your wedding when the ship is in port. When I had my wedding with Carnival cruise line I was able to get onto the ship with all of my family members and friends before the ship was to set sail from Miami, FL and have my wedding. Also, keep in mind there will be no other people on the boat besides you, your wedding guest, and the cruise staff at the time of your wedding because you will be given priority boarding and get on the ship earlier than others for your wedding.

7.) Honeymoon will still be amazing even with cruising family members

Speaking of family members, don't worry about your honeymoon being less romantic with family or friends cruising with you. The ships are so big and full of different activities that you are not likely to run into them. However, if you do want to hang out with them it can be very fun.

8.) Let your guest know your plans ASAP

When planning a cruise wedding you will want to let your guest know your plans as soon as possible, so that they can have time to prepare or take off from work. You can do this BEFORE sending out invitations by simply emailing, calling or texting your guest to give them a heads up of your plans.

9.) Make a wedding website & registry

When it comes to a cruise wedding there are a lot of little details that your guest will need to know and understand. On your wedding website or facebook page be sure to include hotel information, directions to the cruise port and where to meet for the wedding. You will also want to let them know that if they are a non-sailing wedding guest they will need to bring I.D and if they are a sailing guest to bring their passport. 10.)Try to get group rates

Try to book accommodations as a group so that your wedding guests and you can get better rates and save money on your cruise booking.

11.) Wedding planners will assist you

The great thing about having a wedding on a ship is that it will be a lot less stressful. The cruise wedding coordinators take care of everything, you just let them know what you want. Wedding packages offered on the ship also help to take a lot of the work out of the wedding planning. Packages will include cake, food, flowers, and entertainment..

12.) When or when not to have your wedding cruise...

Avoid summer and spring breaks: if you choose to have your wedding during these times you may be sharing your cruise vacation with college spring breakers and families on vacation with their kids However, do book your cruise during these time if it fits into your wedding plans and guest schedules. Avoid holidays: keep in mind when planning your wedding and cruise vacation that it may be more money during holidays. Consider the season & weather: of course you will want to try your best to avoid bad weather months. For example I avoided having my wedding during hurricane season in Florida

13.)Come at least a day prior to wedding cruise

If you do not happen to live conveniently near the cruise port and are driving or flying in for the wedding, do yourself the favor and stay in a hotel prior to your big day. This will save you from running around like a crazy person and from getting stressed out. It also gives you more time to spend with family and friends prior to your wedding as wedding cruises typically are shorter.

14.)Get reliable transportation

Be sure to get reliable transportation to the cruise ship for your big day and preferably get a hotel near the cruise port. You may want to consider getting a shuttle from your hotel for you and your wedding party.

15.) Arriving to cruise port...

you will be met outside by a cruise coordinator in a designated area. They will escort you and your wedding party into the ship in order to get ready. For your wedding you and all your guest will have priority boarding and check in. I boarded the ship at 10:00 a.m with all of my wedding guest.

16.) Getting ready for your wedding

Makeup: On the boat they can do your wedding makeup for you or you can be sure that your makeup artist comes with you into your cabin along with your wedding party. Hair: I would recommend having most of your hair done prior to getting on the boat and leave any minor finishing touches for the boat in order to save time in getting ready for your big day. Clothes: Dress for the occasion, yes it is a cruise wedding and can be laid back but I would recommend to still dress to impress. Cabins: Your cabin will be ready early for you and your wedding party to get ready in. I would recommend that you request a second cabin be opened so that the groom and the bridal party can get ready in separate locations.

17.)Wedding ceremony

keep in mind that the ceremony room you get will be based off of the number of guest that you have attending your wedding. During your big day your guest will be directed to the ceremony room by your wedding coordinator.

18.)Wedding Reception

I would recommend that during the reception you just try and mingle with your wedding guest, with the exception of some candid shots and the standard wedding cake cutting photo. The time you have is short and it is better to pick up the professional picture taking after the reception where you will be able to go around the boat and outside to take plenty of photos by the photographer.

19.) Photos and videography

You can not bring your own photographer. Also, be aware that with any wedding that the professional photos and videos may be expensive. I personally would recommend getting the professional photos and video of your wedding and try to get the photo package that is right for your budget. See example wedding video: here

20.) Honeymoon

Time to sit back, relax and enjoy your honeymoon! My honeymoon was spent in Belize, Mexico, Honduras and Grand Cayman on the ship Carnival Glory. We had a balcony suite and really enjoyed every part of our honeymoon cruise from ordering room service in our cabin to snorkeling in the crystal blue waters of Mexico and riding around on a scooter.

How to Get Married at Sea

What you see in old romantic movies just doesn't happen very often today. You can still have a wedding ceremony at sea, but it's not easy.

Even though it is believed to be a regular event, weddings at sea are a rarity. A ship's captain generally does NOT have the legal right to officiate a wedding at sea. In order for a Captain of a ship to perform a marriage at sea, he must also be a judge, a justice of the peace, a minister, or an officially recognized officiant such as a Notary Public.
Japanese ships allow Captains to perform a marriage ceremony at sea, but only if the couple has valid Japanese passports.
Through Bermuda law, and because most of the Princess captains have Bermuda licenses to perform weddings, captains aboard Princess Cruise's Golden Princess , Star Princess , and the Grand Princess may perform weddings aboard ship and at sea. Note that couples in Bermuda must be 21 and have picture identification showing proof of age. Contact the cruise line at 866-444-8820 or 800-774-6237 for more information.
A romantic alternative is to have your wedding aboard ship while it is docked in a port. You need to follow the port's requirements for such a wedding. All cruise lines offer this option.
Many cruise lines will require that once in port, you will need to leave the ship, swear before a judge that everything is correct with previously prepared paperwork, then go back to the ship for your ceremony.
If you want to renew your vows at sea, you need to show proof of a valid marriage.
Before Cruise West ceased operations in 2010, if the captain obtained a temporary permit to perform a wedding, the captain could officiate a wedding within designated Alaska waterways. Although there are alternatives to Cruise West, there do not seem to be onboard wedding options available.
A wedding at sea takes planning. It's not something you can decide to do at the last minute.
Having a wedding at sea makes arranging the honeymoon easier. Just make sure you tell friends and relatives to leave you alone after the ceremony!
Some websites may still mention Liberian law for the Princess Cruise Line weddings, but that was changed.

Cruise Wedding Guide: How To Tie The Knot At Sea

What could be more romantic than getting hitched on the ocean wave? Nothing – as long as you do a little homework first

S tunning sunsets, turquoise waves and exotic destinations – no wonder cruising makes such a great honeymoon. But why not do the whole thing at sea? Factor in the finest food, five-star service, luxury accommodation and helpful crew, all rolled into one unique venue – plus a big saving over land-based alternatives – and it’s easy to see why cruise-ship weddings are taking off.

However, before you take the plunge, there are a few questions to answer. Which lines do it best? What do you need to know before you book? And will your marriage be legally valid? Read on for all the dos and don’ts of saying ‘I do’ at sea…

Cruise weddings: how to get married at sea

Which lines do cruise weddings best?

Many cruise companies now offer wedding ceremonies at sea, be they legal or symbolic, but some lines stand out from the crowd.

Perhaps the biggest name in nautical nuptials is Princess Cruises, some of whose ships have their very own wedding chapels. The California-based line offers three types of ‘Tie the Knot’ wedding package – at sea, harbourside and onshore. Happy couples who choose the ‘at sea’ option can get married in the ship’s chapel or any other onboard venue of their choice.

Celebrity Cruises is another big player in this market, and in 2017 it became the first cruise line to offer legal same-sex weddings at sea . Celebrity’s captains can conduct both legal and symbolic ceremonies, and the line offers ‘celebratory packages’ including the ceremony, planning, venue and a host of food and drink options.

For couples in search of a more traditional at-sea wedding, British cruise line Cunard is a great option. But the range of possibilities is huge, with Norwegian Cruise Line, P&O, Disney Cruise Lines and Royal Caribbean all now offering nuptial packages on the ocean waves.

Cruise wedding: how to get married at sea

But is it actually legal to get married at sea?

Before you tie the knot on your favourite cruise line, you need to be sure that you’ll be legally married. Under British law, weddings must be held in a public space, and a cruise ship doesn’t count – so on a vessel whose port of registration is in the UK, only symbolic ceremonies can take place. But most cruise ships are registered in countries where the law does allow marriages on board, and these will be legally recognised in the UK. That gives you the option of P&O, Cunard and Princess ships (registered in Bermuda), plus Celebrity (Malta) and Royal Caribbean (Bahamas).

How much will a cruise wedding cost?

According to wedding website hitched.co.uk , the average cost of a UK wedding in 2019 was a staggering £31,970. But if you get hitched on a cruise ship, you can do the whole thing – ceremony, celebration and honeymoon – for a fraction of that. You will need to buy a wedding package on top of your cruise fare, but prices are not likely to give the bride’s father cold feet. Princess Cruises’ ‘Tie the Knot at Sea’ package starts at $2,500, plus a $498 licence fee, with flowers, cake, venue, appetisers and bar all included, while Celebrity’s ‘Nautical Nuptials’ comes in at $2,995, which includes the captain conducting the ceremony.

Elsewhere, Norwegian’s legal weddings on Breakaway , Epic , Escape and Getaway start at $3,099, while P&O offers packages from £1,200. Royal Caribbean will charge from $1,950, and if you’re looking for a more traditional affair, bridal packages cost just $2,800 aboard Cunard’s legendary Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth .

Of course, whichever line you sail with, your guests will have to pay for their cruise. But they get to have a holiday too, so what’s not to love?

What’s included?

Today’s cruise ships are designed to cater for their guests’ every whim, so when you book a wedding package you can be confident that pretty much everything, from food to flowers, will be taken care of. One of the most comprehensive packages is Cunard’s, which includes the bride being escorted by a White Star bellman to the captain-led ceremony, a bespoke floral arrangement and live music (a pianist, harpist or even a string quartet is available for a fee). Champagne, invitations and the services of a wedding coordinator are also included.

Princess – the line with its own wedding chapels – has it covered too, with packages including a photographer, wedding co-ordinator, two floral arrangements and a bouquet, live music, a wedding cake and a bottle of champagne, along with other perks including dinner for the bride and groom in a speciality restaurant. The happy couple can even create an onboard gift register, so guests can give them spa treatments, excursions and meals.

Other leading packages include Celebrity’s offering (a captain-led ceremony, event co-ordinator, live music, photographer, cake, champagne and bouquets), and Royal Caribbean’s, which includes a wedding officiant, planner and coordinator, champagne, music, two-tier wedding cake, photographer, specially decorated stateroom and dinner at a speciality restaurant.

What will I need to bring?

With all the big-ticket items taken care of, you’re free to concentrate on what to wear for the ceremony. And a bit of advice on this – make sure you try everything on before you go, and remember to double-check that you’ve packed everything in your suitcase – you can’t go back once you’ve set sail. That said, pick a no-fly cruise and there will be no luggage restrictions to worry about, so you can bring plenty of outfits plus your own decorations, as well as personal touches like photographs and party favours. Finally, remind your guests to bring their outfits, and you’re all set to go.

Is there anything else I need to know?

As anyone who has planned a wedding on land can tell you, every aspect of the big day must be booked many months in advance. Onboard weddings are no different because only a limited number can take place on each cruise (Cunard, for example, hosts just one wedding per ship per day). If you want to tie the knot with Royal Caribbean, you’ll need to book at least 90 days prior to the sailing – though further in advance is advised – while on Celebrity, all couples are required to submit their legal documentation no later than 10 weeks before the sailing. So to make sure you get the nautical wedding of your dreams, it’s best to start planning at least a year before the event – and don’t forget to remind your guests to book their own cruises well in advance, too.

P&O Cruises: Weddings

Hooray, your paramour said yes! Time to plan that wedding. Oof, there’s a lot more to think about than you anticipated, hey?

Not so with a P&O Cruises Wedding at Sea package. Available on Azura, Ventura, Aurora and Arcadia, these nautical nuptials come with both pre-cruise and on-board cruise wedding specialists to make the big day feel like smooth sailing.

To alleviate any pre-wedding jitters, P&O Cruises weddings come with priority check-in when embarking in Southampton and your big day outfits pressed. What’s more, these cruise ship wedding packages include bridal hair and make-up as well as a bridal bouquet and groom’s buttonhole – so you’ll look pretty as a picture when you say your vows.

The cruise wedding event – for up to 10 guests – will be held in an elegant, private ceremony venue (an Ivory Suite or dedicated room) in the morning or afternoon (the choice is yours) and will be officiated by the captain himself. There will be pre-recorded ceremony music, a two-tier wedding cake and champagne for toasting.

Afterwards, P&O Cruises weddings offer a wide selection of dining options. If you choose to have a morning cruise wedding onboard Azura or Ventura, you can have a decadent private luncheon for you and your guests in The Epicurean , where speeches are welcome.

Another option is to sit together in one of the Freedom restaurants in a separate section so you’ll still get the privacy but no extra expense, although speeches won’t be permitted as these are public areas. There is a wedding luncheon menu at £10 per person should you want it.

Alternately, for something more informal, opt for a buffet to be served to you and your guests in one of the function rooms or have a range of delicious canapés served in the privacy of your function room or in one of the public bars.

Should you want an even more splendid cruise ship wedding day to remember there’s a smorgasbord of extras you can add on to the package. Additions include: floral package, bespoke shore experience, commemorative Champagne flutes, bridge map of marriage location signed by the captain, pianist to play live for 30 minutes, soloist for an hour, two-piece band for 30 minutes, private gifting retail experience, P&O Cruises branded wedding stationery set, ice sculpture for reception and cabin décor.

Of course, if you’re after something more intimate, that’s available with the Just the Two of Us cruise wedding package. It comes with all of the benefits of a Wedding at Sea package and two of the ship’s company will be your legal witnesses. Furthermore, no matter how grand you go on P&O Cruises weddings, you’ll be presented with a commemorative certificate signed by the captain.

Extra cruise ship wedding perks include onboard spending money for the wedding couple as well as each couple within the wedding party; up to three free cabins for your wedding party; and an additional 5kg luggage allowance each for the wedding couple, if travelling on P&O Cruises’ charter flights on a P&O Cruises fly-cruise holiday.

P&O Cruises: Commitment ceremonies

If you are sailing onboard Arvia , Iona or Britannia, a cruise ship wedding will not be possible (due to the vessels being registered in the UK) but you can instead opt for a commitment ceremony.

Commitment Ceremonies packages are available on all P&O Cruises ships and include everything a cruise wedding package does, without the legal bits.

P&O Cruises is unable to offer same-sex marriage ceremonies as Azura, Ventura, Aurora and Arcadia are registered in Bermuda where the Bermuda Government is appealing the decision of the Bermuda Court of Appeal that same-sex marriage should be legal in Bermuda. Until the final appeal is heard, P&O Cruises cannot offer sex marriage ceremonies but it is challenging the stance of the Bermuda Government and has said it “firmly believes same-sex marriage should be permitted.”

Until the problem is resolved P&O Cruises is offering same-sex couples a commitment ceremony onboard.

Weddings are supposed to be a happy blur of expensive flowers, white taffeta gowns and top-shelf liquor on the open bar. Right?

Well, a shocking number of nuptial attendees are needling their hosts on a lively Reddit thread that spills the champagne on some of the most embarrassingly cheap functions they’ve attended.

Sure, wedding guests are essentially present to celebrate the magical union of their loved ones, but it goes without saying that they’re also present for the free food and drink.

And if they don’t get it? Watch out, because they may be shaming you behind your back — and in front of an audience of millions.

In the busy r/weddingshaming forum on the social media platform, a plethora of P.O.’d would-be party animals dropped their most horrible and tasteless experiences that left them wanting more. A lot more.

The original poster of the thread noted that they were given simply just cheese, crackers and nuts to tide them over for the long evening of dancing to the Village People.

Another person chimed in and said they were given just “a plate of lettuce” as the “vegan option” at their sister’s nuptials.

Another ravished reveler interjected: “I showed up to a reception once that only had a ‘popcorn and ice cream bar.’ The reception was scheduled around dinner time, and there was no previous mention of there not being real food provided on the invites or programs.”

At one person’s backyard wedding, “cold Chick-fil-A nuggets and veggie trays” were given out and the bride and groom “didn’t have enough for everyone so people were fighting over” the miniscule chicken chunks.

“Fun times. We left to go get food,” they not-so-fondly remembered.

Another poster joked about their own experience in a follow-up thread titled Family-Style Starvation .

The commenter warned people against having a family-style event with long rectangular tables that had large plates of food.

They explained that their cousin had a wedding with that tactic, having 25 guests per rectangular table with the food served at each end.

They stated that they were sitting with their husband in the middle of the table and “there was no food left by the time it got to us,” as well as for the couple idling next to them.

“All we got was a couple spoonfuls of lavender asparagus risotto to split between the four of us. We even asked the servers if there were any extras they could send to the middle,” they wrote.

“They assured us there was. They served it to the head of the tables again! So everyone got seconds while we still had nothing, not even risotto. We ended up leaving early and demolishing Wendy’s in the way home!”

Someone else claimed that the only delectables presented to them for one reception was just a batch of cupcakes.

For one’s “buffet cocktail hour,” the nourishment given was Ritz crackers, turkey pepperoni and cheese, but no alcohol.

Drinks included orange juice, cranberry juice and sparkling water, with Coke or Diet Coke available for purchase.

The sit-down dinner portion was “microwaved lunch meats masquerading as ‘roast turkey’ or ‘prime rib’ with a gravy on top, corn niblets or peas, and those fancy-cut sweet pickles.”

Sounds like a feast by comparison.

Cruise lines scramble to find home port alternatives after Baltimore bridge collapse

Following the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore early Tuesday, two cruise lines have to find alternate ports where their ships can dock when their current voyages conclude.

What happened

In the early hours of March 26, a cargo ship leaving the port of Baltimore hit the Francis Scott Key Bridge, causing a total collapse, Baltimore City Fire Department chief James Wallace said during a press conference Tuesday morning .

Several people are confirmed to have fallen into the water. Two were rescued, and the search continues for others. Mayor Brandon M. Scott has declared a state of emergency in the city .

Because the debris from the fallen bridge and the search-and-rescue efforts block the path to the docking area, the Port of Baltimore has suspended vessel traffic into and out of the port until further notice. It is not yet known how long it will be closed to cruise ships or how long cleanup and rebuilding are expected to take.

Which ships are affected

Two cruise ships — Carnival Cruise Line 's Carnival Legend and Royal Caribbean 's Vision of the Seas — currently depart from Baltimore, prompting both cruise lines to search for alternative port options.

Carnival Legend is on a seven-night Bahamas voyage that was set to end in Baltimore on March 31. Vision of the Seas is in the early part of a 12-night sailing, also round trip from Baltimore, that's due to finish April 4. Additionally, Carnival Pride is scheduled to move from its current home port of Tampa to begin offering round-trip voyages from Baltimore starting April 15.

American Cruise Lines also has two ships — American Glory and American Constitution — in the area, but they remain largely unaffected, as both vessels are scheduled to home port in Washington, D.C., this year. (The line has other voyages that are set to sail from Baltimore later in the year. It plans to monitor conditions there and make adjustments as necessary.)

What the lines are saying about itinerary changes

Both Carnival and Royal Caribbean will temporarily relocate their Baltimore-based vessels to Norfolk, Virginia, until further notice. In a statement, Carnival said passengers on its current Carnival Legend sailing will be bused, at no cost to them, back to Baltimore after disembarking on March 31. The ship's next sailings will now sail round-trip from Norfolk.

"We will update our future cruise guests on when we will return home to Baltimore, but in the meantime, we appreciate the quick response and support from officials in Norfolk," Carnival Cruise Line president Christine Duffy said.

Additionally, the current Vision of the Seas sailing will conclude in Norfolk instead of Baltimore. In a statement, Royal Caribbean said it will provide passengers on that voyage, scheduled to conclude on April 4, with compensation and free shuttle transportation back to Baltimore. They are also being provided with free Wi-Fi and phone calls on board in order to adjust their travel arrangements.

As for Vision of the Seas' future cruises, the line said the ship will sail its planned April 4 and April 12 itineraries from Norfolk. "Our guests booked to sail with us will receive compensation due to the necessary adjustments made to their vacations. After returning from the April 12 cruise, Vision will head to The Bahamas for its previously scheduled maintenance."

TPG also contacted the Cruise Lines International Association, which serves as an advocate for the cruise industry as a whole. In an emailed statement, CLIA provided port statistics.

"Cruise activity at the port of Baltimore based on 2024 published itineraries includes 12 ships making a total of 115 ship calls during calendar year 2024," CLIA said. "It is the 29th-largest cruise port in the U.S. with 378,000 passenger movements scheduled through the port."

Passenger recalled what happened moments before man, 20, 'jumped off' cruise ship in front of family

Search efforts are currently underway for a 20-year-old man who reportedly 'jumped off' a Royal Caribbean cruise ship.

On Thursday (April 4) at around 4:00am, the unidentified man ‘jumped out of the window’ of Royal Caribbean 's Liberty of the Seas as it sailed between Cuba and the Bahamas' Grand Inagua Island .

The cruise line immediately leaped into action and began a search and rescue mission.

In a statement to the New York Post, Royal Caribbean said : “The ship’s crew immediately launched a search and rescue effort alongside the US Coast Guard, who has taken over the search.

“Our Care Team is providing support and assistance to the guest’s family during this difficult time. For the privacy of the guest and their family, we have no additional details to share.”

The unnamed man reportedly 'jumped' overboard.

Passengers onboard the 18-storey ship at the time of the incident have since recalled what happened, painting a tragic story for the family of the young man.

Bryan Sims told the New York Post that he was with the 20-year-old and his brother just moments before.

He said: “I had hung out with him and his brother in the hot tub until 3:30.

“It was standing room only. He sat right beside me the whole time.”

“He was pretty drunk ,” Sims continued.

“As we were walking from the hot tub back to the elevators, his dad and brother were walking towards us. His dad was fussing at him for being drunk, I guess.”

“When we got to them, he said to his dad, ‘I’ll fix this right now’. And he jumped out the window in front of us all.”

He went on to describe the experience as 'surreal'.

A passenger has recalled what happened moments before the incident.

Another passenger, Deborah Morrison, added: “There was a lot of yelling, and the crew was alerted immediately.

“His family was horrified. Just beside themselves. I can’t even begin to imagine what they’re going through.”

Amy Phelps, who was also onboard the cruise ship, said: “The early morning was definitely somber as so many people came out of their cabins to stare at the sea, hoping to be able to aid in finding the person.

“Royal Caribbean has been excellent at communicating updates throughout the day.

“They have asked that people act with compassion in light of the tragic situation.”

According to the Washington Post, approximately 386 people have been reported to have gone overboard on the cruise lines in the last two decades.

Legally smoke marijuana while on a Carnival (or any other) cruise

C arnival has recently stepped up its efforts to keep all cannabis products off its cruise ships, adding drug-sniffing dogs in its departure terminals and on its ships.

The cruise line has a zero-tolerance policy, which includes not just smokeable marijuana but also edibles, CBD products and anything else that's a derivative of cannabis.

Those rules do not change when cruise ships leave from ports where recreational marijuana has been legalized. All the major cruise lines follow U.S. federal law when it comes to cannabis.

That means that even people who have valid prescriptions for marijuana from a doctor cannot bring pot and derivatives on board. That's because federal law trumps local law and the penalty for violating the rules can include a fine and/or being kicked off the ship without a refund.

This has always been the policy for all sailings out of the U.S., but anyone who has a nose and has been on a Carnival Cruise Line ( CCL ) or Royal Caribbean ( RCL ) ship knows that until recently enforcement has been lax.

That's no longer the case, and while Carnival has been the most vocal about the steps it's taking to keep cannabis off its ships, Royal Caribbean has also stepped up enforcement.

If, however, you like to legally partake, it is possible to do so on some cruises.

You can smoke pot on a cruise, but not on a cruise ship

While cruise ships sailing from American ports follow U.S. federal laws in most cases, passengers are not governed by the cruise line when they are in port.

So while Carnival and Royal Caribbean, as well as the other major cruise lines, use 21 as their drinking age even when traveling to countries where 18-year-olds can legally consume alcohol, those passengers can drink in port.

An 18-year-old can legally drink alcohol in the Bahamas or the Dominican Republic — two common cruise stops. Some countries that cruise ships call on even have 16 as the legal drinking age.

In the case where a port allows passengers under 21 to drink, the cruise line has no say in the matter. If a passenger created a disturbance when boarding, they might be detained, or even not be allowed back on the ship, but an 18-, 19- or 20-year-old won't face any consequences for smelling of alcohol or even being drunk.

The same logic and rules apply to cannabis.

Some cruise ports have legal cannabis

A limited number of cruise ports are in states, cities and countries with legal recreational cannabis. For a cruise passenger to partake, they need to find a destination that offers not just legal possession of marijuana, CBD and other cannabis-related products but also legal consumption.

In some places that offer legal recreational cannabis, it's not legal to smoke in public. So to stay on the right side of the law, it's important to know whether consumption lounges are available. That's because in some markets the only legal place to smoke is a private residence, which cruise passengers will likely not have access to.

Edibles, however, are more discreet, but it's very important to know the specific local laws to avoid fines or even jail time.

"Many places that are visited by cruise ships are relaxing restrictions on the drug. For example, it is legal in California, Washington, Alaska, New York, Massachusetts, and other coastal states. Canada as a whole also has legal marijuana," Cruzely reported.

In many of those ports, consumption lounges that cater to cruise passengers have been set up. It's your responsibility as a visitor to know the local rules.

Cruise passengers must also consume or properly dispose of any cannabis products they purchase before they get back on their ships. Carnival, Royal Caribbean and every other cruise line scan any bags you bring back on and make you go through a security gate.

Getting caught with cannabis can prompt your cruise line to bar you from reboarding, leaving you stranded and responsible for finding your way home.

An American couple who flew thousands of miles to rejoin a cruise ship after it abandoned them on a remote African island are now having second thoughts about getting back on board.

Jay Campbell and his wife Jill were among nine passengers abandoned on São Tomé and Príncipe by the Norwegian Dawn cruise ship when they were late to return from a shore excursion on March 27.

But after jet-setting through seven countries in 48 hours to catch up with the ship in Dakar, the couple are beginning to feel disillusioned with the luxury liner.

‘After what we witnessed, we truly believe that although there’s a set of rules or policies that the ship may have followed, they followed those rules too rigidly,’ Jill Campbell told USA TODAY .

‘I believe that they really forgot that they are people working in the hospitality industry and that really the safety and the well-being of the customers should be their first priority, and that should be placed first.’

‘We believe there was a basic duty of care that they’ve forgotten about so it does concern us,’ she added.

The couple, from South Carolina, had been eight days into a 21-day cruise from Cape Town to Barcelona when they embarked on a third-party tour of the island, located around 190 miles west of mainland Africa.

But when they arrived back at the port, where the Norwegian Dawn was still docked, the captain refused to let them board as they had missed the 3pm deadline for re-entry.

The São Tomé and Príncipe Coast Guard then ferried the stranded passengers to the cruise ship, but they were once again denied entry by the captain.

Upon their return to the island, the Campbells encountered a number of additional passengers who had been denied entry and abandoned by the cruise operator, including four elderly passengers, a pregnant woman and a person in a wheelchair.

The group later encountered an 80-year-old woman who had been on a separate tour organised by the cruise line, who had been left behind after becoming hospitalised while suffering a concussion while on the tour.

The Campbells were the only members of the group who had access to credit cards, and say they spent $5000 on accommodation for the group while they planned their next move.

The couple say they were grateful for the hospitality received by the people of São Tomé and Príncipe and had been receiving consular assistance from the US embassy in Angola. They were due to fly to Gambia on Sunday to try to rejoin the cruise.

‘I truly believe sometimes we’re put in certain places for a reason and I believe we were put in this place for the 80-year-old woman that was left alone,’ Campbell told ABC. ‘God forbid, what would have happened to that lady if we were not here.’

A spokesperson for Norwegian Cruise Line told the Mail that the eight remaining guests have been provided authorisation to rejoin the ship in Dakar today.

‘Despite the series of unfortunate events outside of our control, we will be reimbursing these eight guests for their travel costs from Banjul, Gambia to Dakar, Senegal,’ the spokesperson said.

Norwegian Cruise Line said it was the passengers’ responsibility to ensure they returned to the cruise ship on time and that they had returned the group’s passports to the relevant port authorities before departing.

A previous statement from the operator read: ‘While this is a very unfortunate situation, guests are responsible for ensuring they return to the ship at the published time, which is communicated broadly over the ship’s intercom in the daily communication and posted just before exiting the vessel.

‘Our team has been working closely with the local authorities to understand the requirements and necessary visas needed if the guests were to rejoin the ship at the next available port of call.’

Baltimore Key Bridge collapse: Temporary channel opens for boats working on bridge response

The cargo ship struck Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge early Tuesday.

A cargo ship crashed into Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge early Tuesday morning, causing a near-total collapse of the span and halting vessel traffic into and out of the Port of Baltimore.

Six construction workers are believed to have fallen from the collapsing bridge into the frigid waters of the Patapsco River below. The bodies of two of the victims have been recovered so far, while four remain missing and are presumed dead, officials said.

The container ship Dali struck Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge at about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, partially collapsing the bridge , officials in Maryland said.

A local pilot was at the helm of the ship at the time, Maryland Department of Transportation Secretary Paul Wiedefeld said.

The crash appeared to be accidental , not intentional, officials said.

Two construction workers were rescued and six went missing in the immediate aftermath of the collapse, officials said. The bodies of two of the victims were recovered from the water on Wednesday amid ongoing search and recovery efforts, while four remain missing and are presumed dead, officials said.

Legal team for ship argues for 'limited liability' in Bridge crash

Lawyers for the Singaporean company that operates the ship that crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore say the company should have "limited liability" in the aftermath of the crash, according to court documents filed in federal court on Monday.

"The casualty was not due to any fault, neglect, or want of care on the part of Petitioners, the Vessel, or persons or entities for whose petitioners may be responsible," court documents filed in Maryland federal court say. "Alternatively, if any such faults caused or contributed to the Casualty, or to any loss or damage arising out of the casualty, which is denied, such faults were occasioned and occurred without petitioners’ privity or knowledge."

The filing seeks to minimize the financial exposure Grace Ocean Private Limited has over the crash.

It also goes into detail about how much damage the vessel sustained.

Court documents say that the vessel sustained $28 million worth of damage and had $1.7 million worth of cargo on the ship.

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore on Monday gave an update on his four directives in the wake of the bridge collapse.

In order to achieve his first goal -- recovering the four victims who remain missing -- Moore said there needs to be more work done to clear the channel in order to move forward.

A portion of the bridge under the water was described as "chaotic wreckage," Moore said, and the water is "so murky and so filled with debris that divers cannot see any more than a foot or two in front of them."

Every time a diver goes in the water to search for a victim, "they are taking a risk," Moore said.

The governor said he wants the recovery mission to be completed with no casualties. Six people have been killed in the bridge collapse, Moore said, adding, "I refuse to lose any more."

As for another goal -- reopening channel traffic -- the governor described the scale of the project as "enormous."

"Unified Command has scheduled another lift for later today, pending conditions -- specifically pending lightning. And they will be lifting an estimated 350-ton piece from the bridge," Moore said.

A temporary channel opened Monday to help get more vessels in the water around the site of the collapse, he said.

"The temporary channel will be marked with government lights to aid navigation and will have a controlling depth of 11 feet," Moore said.

Crews are also working on creating a second temporary channel that will measure about 15 feet deep, he said. That's expected to open "in the coming days," he said.

After more debris is cleared, crews will also work to open a third alternate channel with a depth expected around 20 to 25 feet, said Rear Adm. Shannon Gilreath, commander of the Fifth Coast Guard District. No timeline for this channel is known.

President Joe Biden will visit the Baltimore bridge site on Friday, April 5, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said.

Biden will be joined by Maryland Gov. Wes Moore.

Jean-Pierre did not have any updates on the cost of rebuilding the bridge, repeatedly pointing back to the $60 million in emergency relief funds approved by the Biden administration to begin the recovery efforts.

"We're going to have continued conversation with the state of Maryland to get a sense of how much this is going to cost, and we have said, we are going to certainly continue to talk to Congress to get some assistance here," she said.

A temporary channel has opened in the vicinity of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, but the channel is limited only to vessels working on the bridge response, the Unified Command said.

The temporary channel is a very small opening, only accessible for small boats, the Unified Command said.

The Unified Command is made up of agencies including the Coast Guard, the Army Corps of Engineers and the Maryland State Police.

2,600 Carnival cruise passengers rerouted from Baltimore arrive in Virginia

The first of multiple Carnival cruise ships rerouted from Baltimore due to the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge arrived at a port in Norfolk, Virginia, on Sunday

About 2,600 guests aboard the Carnival Legend returned from a cruise to the Bahamas, getting off the ship in Norfolk. The passengers boarded 70 buses and were driven four hours back to Baltimore, where many left their cars parked.

"When we left Baltimore, we had to go under that bridge," passenger Viktoriia Aldred told ABC affiliate station WVEC in Norfolk. "The bridge looked amazing and you go under the bridge and you're like 'wow.'"

Baltimore native Michael Lukoski told WVEC he heard the news of the bridge collapse while on the cruise to the Bahamas.

"When I got the news Tuesday morning … you couldn’t believe it," said Lukoski. adding that when he first heard of the bridge collapse "it was like, 'no way.'"
