Irkutsk, Russia

You are here, about irkutsk.

The city of Irkutsk was originally founded in 1661 as a fort to colonize Siberia . It was the main Russian fort behind the Ural mountains, so all the expeditions to colonize Kamchatka and Alaska have begun there. For centuries Russian emperors and communists exiled political prisoners to Irkutsk. Thus many brainy Russians spent years in the city, influencing the average IQ level of inhabitants.

Reasons to travel to Irkutsk

Irkutsk is often called the "Paris of Siberia" as the culture and refinement at this one-time outpost not far from the frontiers of China and Mongolia came from the Decembrists, a group of Russian revolutionaries who tried to topple the Russian Empire in 1825. Many of the rebellion leaders were executed in St. Petersburg, yet the involved nobility was exiled to Irkutsk. Two of the homes that housed some of the largest salons and social gatherings of this era, the Volkonsky House and the Trubetskoy House, still stand, the former of which remains one of the more popular museum sights of Irkutsk.

Even today, art remains an integral part of the city. It houses the Irkutsk Philharmonic Orchestra and one of the largest art galleries east of the Ural Mountains, the Sukachev Art Museum, and the Sukachev Estate - the former home of one of the more prominent mayors, linking the Decembrists era and the modern days.

The city center is full of wooden houses with typical decorative carvings on the walls and window frames. As such, the most famous one of them is the "Lace House." Most of the buildings of this kind were destroyed in Moscow and other big cities during the 20th century's industrialization, so it's a rare opportunity to see what a Russian city would look like if it stayed the way it was back in the days. The symbol of Irkutsk, the statue of the "babr," a mythological animal reminiscent of a tiger, is another place to put on your Irkutsk itinerary.

The cathedrals of Irkutsk are also among the city's must-sees. As such, the Cathedral of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God as well as ornate Epiphany Cathedral is surely not to miss during your Irkutsk travel.

Irkutsk sits in a region so cold that some parts of the ground never thaw even on the hottest summer days. It's no surprise that the icebreaker Angara, one of the oldest globally, and a geology museum serve as important sights for tourists. Of course, the real reason to visit Irkutsk is Lake Baikal , located nearby.

The deepest lake in the world, this Russian treasure is often called the "Blue Eye of Siberia." It is said that putting one's feet in the water from its shores will add five years to your life (a particularly memorable experience in the colder months). Traditionally, Irkutsk was the city from which the great Russian explorers set out. Even today, an Irkutsk tour is a great place to start one's own personal exploration of Siberia and the Russian Far East. putting this destination on your Russia travel map .

Best Things to Do in Irkutsk

  • Stop by the ornate Epiphany Cathedral and the Cathedral of the Kazan Icon
  • Enjoy traditional Russian wooden architecture of Irkutsk

Top 12 Things to Do in Irkutsk

Lake Baikal is only the beginning of what there is to see in Irkutsk

When you think of Siberia , you probably don't think of cities, let alone very large ones. Yet Irkutsk, capital of the Oblast of the same name in the eastern part of Russia's frozen tundra, is home to more than half a million people. It's also chock full of incredible activities, whether you explore the eclectic mix of Russian, Siberian and indigenous Buryat culture on offer in the city center, or make an excursion to Lake Baikal , the largest body of freshwater in the world and the region's most famous attraction.

Pray to the Savior—or the Prince

Irkutsk might be thousands of miles from the majority of the Russian population, but you can still find plenty of faithful adherents to the Eastern Orthodox faith. Even if you're not a religious traveler, this means stunning Eastern Orthodox architecture, which is a photographer's dream.

First up is the Church of the Savior, a humble 18th-century structure built in the shape of shape—this detail will become important in a couple of sections, so pay attention. You could also visit 19th-century Kazan Church, whose red bricks juxtapose with a bright blue roof.

The most stunning and dramatic piece of Orthodox architecture in Irkutsk, however, is Prince Vladimir Monastery, a huge complex constructed in 1888 to honor the early Russian prince who'd Christianized Russia nearly a millennium before .

Take a History Lesson

Have you ever heard the phrase "banished to Siberia"? Well, it's not just an expression. Participants of the Decembrist uprising of 1825 , which you might think of as an unsuccessful version of the 1917 revolution that eventually toppled the Tsars, were sent to Siberia as a punishment, and the Irkutsk Regional Historical and Memorial Museum of Decembrists tells some of their stories.

Another place to immerse yourself in the history of Irkutsk is the Irkutsk Regional Museum, which focuses on the architecture and ethnography of indigenous Buryat people.

Say "Privet" to a Baikal Seal

If the name "Irkutsk Nerpinary" doesn't evoke any reaction in you, no one will blame you. However, once you realize that this place is home to extraordinarily cute Nerps (another name for the Baikal Seal), you'll probably change your tune. If you aren't going to be able to see this magnificent creature in its natural habitat (which is one of the items on this list, as it turns out), the Irkutsk Nerpinary is the best place to say "Privet" (that's Russian for "hello"!) to one.

Go to the Beach

Located within the Angara that flows through the center of Irkutsk, Yunosti Island is far from what you would consider tropical; it doesn't even have sand, as many of the artificial cities beaches around the world do . But if you aren't going to be able to make it all the way to Lake Baikal and still want some time on the water, this might be your best bet, at least within the Irkutsk city limits.

Taste Siberia

Russian cuisine, in general, is underrated , but the Siberian Buryat community's food you find in Irkutsk is actually unknown to most of the world's population. The staple food for this population is the pozy , a hearty meat dumpling you're supposed to eat with your hands (though no one will judge you if you don't.

Fish, not surprisingly, is also an important ingredient in Irkutsk, given the city's proximity to the world's largest freshwater lake. Popular local fish include Kharius, Omyl, and Sig, which are prepared in different ways depending on where you order them.

Become an Ice Princess

Irkutsk's annual ice sculpture festival doesn't really hold a candle to the one in Harbin, China , but locals nonetheless put up snow and ice sculptures in the city's Central Park (which also doesn't live up to its namesake in New York) every year. If you happen to visit Irkutsk in winter and aren't headed immediately to Lake Baikal, this is definitely something you should check out. Some years there's an ice castle, which means you can become an ice princess (or prince, as it were).

Or Just Break the Ice

Although it's thousands of miles from an ocean, Irkutsk has nonetheless been one of Siberia's most important ports throughout history, a fact that's even more impressive when you consider the city's water is frozen solid for half the year. The aptly-named "Icebreaker" Museum, which sits in the middle of the Angara River and is housed in an actually icebreaking ship that's one of the oldest in the world, tells this story and many others.

Listen to Folk Music

When you hear the name "Irkutsk Philharmony," you probably imagine classical music and ballet performances. While this building is no Bolshoi Theatre , performances of a more classical sort do play here. On the other hand, you should make sure to stop by on your trip, to see if any folk dance and music performances will take place. It could be a great opportunity to experience Buryat culture!

Buy the Best Pair of Boots You'll Ever Own

In case you haven't figured it out, Irkutsk is cold, with temperatures staying below freezing for between 5-6 months per year. As a result, these people know their stuff when it comes to warm clothing—and footwear.

Called "Kamusi" by the Buryat , the deer and elk fur boots you'll see sold all around town are probably overkill for wherever you're taking the back to. Still they're a worthy investment, and you can pretty much be guaranteed your feet will never be cold again.

Catch a Frozen Wave

Finally, we arrive at Lake Baikal. The largest freshwater lake in the world, which has recently become internet famous due to the frozen waves that lap (or rather, don't lap) at its shores during Siberia's long winter, Lake Baikal is close enough to Irkutsk (about an hour by train) to be done as a day trip, though you will probably want to stay longer there (provided you've got your kamusi on)!

In fact, you can circle the entire lake by train, which can take as long as 3 days, though that could be overkill as well.

Take a Bath

The Arshan Resort located in the outskirts of Irkutsk is one of the most notable nature hot springs in Siberia, but don't expect an experience as raucous as the one you'd find at a Banya bathhouse in Moscow or St. Petersburg . The focus here is less on community or conversation, and more on the magical thermal water that seeps up from the frozen tundra of Siberia.

Head to the Far East, or Way Out West

Irkutsk sits much closer to the eastern terminus of the Trans-Siberian Railway  than the Western one, but if you board this epic journey at Irkutsk Station, there's still plenty to explore in either direction. Buy a ticket headed eastward, and marvel at the steppe of Mongolia as your train barrels toward Beijing. Or head west to Moscow, which will feel about as cosmopolitan as Hollywood compared to Irkutsk, despite all the amazing things you did there.

The 11 Best things to do in Irkutsk, Russia

One of the major stops on the Trans Siberian route and Trans Mongolian railways is the Russian town of Irkutsk in Siberia.

Irkutsk is the gateway to Lake Baikal , the world’s oldest and largest freshwater lake and is also a lovely place to explore in its own right.

If you’re doing a Trans Siberian railway trip and plan to stop in Irkutsk, be sure to check out this guide to things to do in Irkutsk, Russia for a memorable trip!

About Irkutsk

Irkutsk is a town in eastern Siberia in Russia and is both the largest city in Siberia and the de-facto capital of Siberia. The population of Irkutsk is over 600,000 making it a fairly sizeable town.

It’s one of the most popular stops on the Trans Siberian Railway and, as such, is popular with tourists, especially during the summer months.

With Lake Baikal just 65km away, the city makes a great base for travellers looking to visit the western shoreline of the lake.

But the city itself is worth exploring too. There’s 19th-century architecture, pretty churches and great places to eat! If you’re looking for places to visit in Siberia then be sure to add this to the list.

Where is Irkutsk?

Irkutsk is in the Siberian region of Russia and is the largest city in Siberia.

It’s one of the most popular stops along the Trans Siberian Railway which goes from Moscow to Vladivostok and along the Trans – Mongolian Railway from Moscow to Beijing, China via Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

It’s around 5,200 km east of Moscow and just over 1,600km from Beijing.

Typical Irkutsk weather

The Irkutsk climate is typically very cold with long dry winters and warm summers that tend to be wetter. The weather in Irkutsk when we visited in mid-July was hot and dry with temperatures in the high 20s-low 30s.

Irkutsk weather in winter sees temperatures of around -20 degrees Celcius making an Irkutsk winter a cold one! The weather gets cold enough in this region to make Lake Baikal the most impressive frozen lake in Russia!

When is the best time to visit Siberia?

Summer is the best time to visit Siberia. June – August is when you’ll get the hotter temperatures, as well as more daylight, meaning you won’t be freezing cold every time you step outside!

However, if you want to see Lake Baikal frozen over then you’ll need to visit in winter. This usually happens for 4-5 months from late January to early May-June (June for the north part of the lake).

How to get to Irkutsk and away

things to do in irkutsk churches

There is an Irkutsk international airport, albeit a small one, and the city is also one of the main stops along the Trans Siberian railway route.

We travelled from Ulaanbaatar to Irkutsk on the Trans Mongolian train arriving at Irkutsk railway station and left by getting the plane from Irkutsk airport to Beijing.

Trans Siberian Railway to Irkutsk

The most common way for travellers to arrive in Irkutsk is on the Trans Siberian train. Most people travelling on the Trans Siberian express will get to Irkutsk from Moscow or on the Ulan Bator to Irkutsk train.

We caught the train to Irkutsk from Ulaanbaatar. The Ulaanbaatar to Irkutsk train takes around 26 hours and arrives at Irkutsk train station from which it’s easy to get to central Irkutsk.

For us, this was the endpoint of our Trans Mongolian railway trip, but for many, they’ll be travelling on the Trans Siberian express going all the way from Moscow to Beijing by train.

If you’re getting the Moscow to Irkutsk train (which follows the standard Trans Siberian train trip) it’ll take around 4 days.

You can also go straight from Beijing to Irkutsk but I’d recommend stopping in Mongolia if possible!

Check out the best things to do in Ulaanbaatar here.

You can book your Trans Siberian train tickets in advance (which is recommended) on several different websites. If you’re departing from elsewhere in Russia then I’d recommend RussianRailways.com , New Juulchin tours and if you’re coming from China try CITS .

Check out my post on how to travel the Trans Siberian railway including more information on Trans Siberian railway cost.

Flights to Irkutsk

Irkutsk international airport is super small (with only one gate!) but it flies internationally and domestically to cities in Russia.

We caught a flight from Irkutsk to Beijing with S7 and were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the planes. Especially given that everyone had been warning us beforehand about how risky getting a plane from Siberia could be!

Skyscanner is what I use to find cheap flights.

Where to stay in Irkutsk

Getting to hostels and hotels in central Irkutsk is super easy when getting off the train at Irkutsk Passenger train station. Just catch tram 1 which takes you straight downtown. Take a look at these Irkutsk accommodation recommendations.

Important visa information: In order to get your Russian visa, you’ll need an invite from the hotel or hostel you’re staying at. All accommodation in Irkutsk should be able to help you out with this as they’ll be used to doing so. They usually have a link to a site that can get this confirmation for you. The Rolling Stones, for example, used HotelsPro .

Best hostels in Irkutsk

  • Rolling Stones Hostel: Probably the best Irkutsk hostel is the Rolling Stones hostel. It gets incredible reviews on Booking.com and is the hostel we picked for our night in Irkutsk. It’s super clean, has funky music and the private rooms are spacious with comfy beds and absolutely everything you need for your stay. Plus, the washrooms are super clean and the staff are super friendly too! See more here.
  • Montana Hostel:   Great looking hostel in downtown Irkutsk with private ensuite rooms available.

Go on a church tour

things to do in irkutsk churches

Irkutsk is full of beautiful and extravagantly decorated orthodox churches. Krestovozdvizhenskaya Tserkov’ and Spasskaya Tserkov’ are the two churches especially worth a visit. My favourite was Krestovozdvizhenskaya Tserkov’. Taking a church tour is one of the best ways to learn more about each individual one.

Note: If you want to go inside the churches be prepared to cover up your shoulders, heads and above your knees. A lot of the churches have shawls and wrap around skirts you can borrow if you’re not.

Visit Lake Baikal

olkhorn island lake baikal siberia russia

You can’t come to Irkutsk and not visit Lake Baikal which you may also hear being referred to as “Irkutsk Lake” or the “Siberian Lake”.

Lake Baikal is one of the oldest geographical features in the world. It stretches 636km from north to south and is up to 1637m deep, making it the world’s deepest lake. Astonishingly the lake contains nearly one-fifth of the planet’s unfrozen freshwater. Fed by 300 rivers, it’s drained by just one, the Angara near Listvyanka.

There are many different ways you can visit it, from visiting one of the towns along the lake shore or heading out to Olkhon Island both of which are listed in more detail below.

Take a trip to Olkhon Island

olkhorn island (6 of 11)

Olkhon Island is one of the most popular excursions from Irkutsk. Getting from Irkutsk to Olkhon Island takes a long time (at least 5 hours each way), but the island is picturesque and a great way to see Lake Baikal.

Check out this guide to Olkhon Island

Tour Listvyanka

Listvanyanka is the closest town on Lake Baikal from Irkutsk and it’s also one of the oldest settlements at Baikal Lake. It’s small but has plenty to keep you entertained for a day or two.

Things to do in Listvyanka:

  • Hike some of the Great Baikal Trail
  • Learn about the lake at the Baikal Museum
  • Take the chair lift to the top of  Chersky Stone for a great view
  • Visit the fish market
  • Visit a Russian Banya (sauna)

Getting to Listvyanka from Irkutsk

The easiest way to get from Irkutsk to Listvyanka is to catch the Irkutsk to Listvyanka bus which takes around 1 hour 40 minutes, costing around 140 rubles each way.

The bus goes from Irkutsk Bus station. The route number is N 524 and it leaves every hour.

From June to September you can also take a boat form the Raketa pier in Irkutsk to Bolshiye Koty which stops at Listvyanka along the way. www.vsrp.ru .

Visit the Central Market

central market irkutsk russia

One of the top Irkutsk attractions is the Central Market. This huge market sells everything from fresh fruits and vegetables to clothes. It’s a great place for a wander when you’re in the city.

Ride the Circum-Baikal railway

The Circum-Baikal Railway is a section of the Trans-Siberian Railway and is arguably the most beautiful. Travelling alongside Lake Baikal, the train makes several stops where you can get out for a short while to get better views.

There’s the electric train which is more of a commuter train, and the steam train which is ideal for tourists as it tends to make longer stops.

More information about riding the Circum-Baikal railway.

See the Babr symbol of Irkutsk

The symbol of Irkutsk is the Babr which is an old Russian word meaning ‘Siberian Tiger’.

The tiger has been on the city’s coat of arms since Irkutsk was established and there’s a sculpture of the Babr in a small square by Lenina Street.

Chill out in Irkutsk’s beautiful parks

parks in irkutsk

I was surprised by the number of beautiful parks and fountains in Irkutsk. It wasn’t something I expected and made a pleasant change from visiting Beijing and Ulaanbaatar where there was a distinct lack of parks.

They’re not all grassy parks, more concrete ones, but there are still trees, fountains and plenty of benches making them great for a rest while you’re exploring.

Try pine cone preserves

Pine cones are something you’ve probably ever eaten before but in Russia, you can! They’re cooked into preserves like jams and honey and are said to ease asthma and bronchitis.

Look for products like honey with the pine cone clearly visible in the jar, or on the label and give it a taste. It also makes a great Siberian souvenir!

Try Baikal fish

When eating out in Irkutsk restaurants be sure to try some Baikal fish known as omul . Baikal omul is a whitefish species of the salmon family special to Lake Baikal in Siberia, Russia.

It’s considered a delicacy and will be super fresh in Listvyanka if you’re planning a trip there!

Take the Irkutsk walking tour

irkutsk walking tour

One thing we found pretty cool about Irkutsk was that they have a walking tour that’s mapped out on the pavements for you.

As you walk around you’ll see a green line which takes you from place to place and there are information boards along the way too.

I’ve never seen this anywhere else before and thought it was a great idea!

  • Top tip: If you’re staying in The Rolling Stones hostel they’ve got a great Irkutsk map which has this green walking tour as well as another one.

The Perfect Irkutsk And Lake Baikal Itinerary

Have you heard of Irkutsk? If you ever played the board game Risk you probably have. In any case, Irkutsk is a city located in Siberia (Russia).

It was one of our stops on the Trans Mongolian Express and despite visiting St. Petersburg and Moscow as well, Irkutsk was actually my favorite Russian city!

In this guide, I'll share everything you need to know to plan an amazing (family) trip to Irkutsk and nearby Lake Baikal (the main reason most Trans Siberian Express and Trans Mongolian Express travelers make a stop here).

Things to know when planning a trip to Irkutsk and Lake Baikal

What is the best time to visit irkutsk and lake baikal.

We visited Irkutsk in mid-May and were very lucky with the weather! Our train arrived at Irkutsk station in the early morning and it was pretty cold when we got out (5 degrees Celsius).

However, it warmed up quickly and when we left our hotel around noon it was almost 20 degrees! We walked around in our t-shirts for the rest of the day.

The next day we went to Lake Baikal and the weather was perfect as well. Blue skies, sunny, and not too hot (around 20 degrees Celsius) for sightseeing.

Ice on Lake Baikal in Siberia (Russia)

However, as Irkutsk is located in Siberia it can get very cold. In fact, the average temperature in December is a chilly -14 degrees Celsius.

Also, the tour guide who showed us around Lake Baikal mentioned that there was snow a week before we arrived. Make sure you pack enough warm layers, regardless of the time you are visiting!

Altogether I think May until September are nice months to visit Irkutsk if you don't like to be cold. During winter Lake Baikal completely freezes over, which must be amazing to see.

But like I said above, be aware it'll be cold. Very very cold;-).

How to travel to Irkutsk?

We traveled to Irkutsk by train, as part of our Trans Mongolian Express adventure. From Moscow, it takes approximately three and a half days to get to Irkutsk by train. From the train station, you can take a taxi to the city center or a bus (number 16, 20 or 80) .

Click here to book train tickets for the Trans Mongolian or Trans Siberian Express!

You can also fly to Irkutsk, from Irkutsk International Airport it's only 7km from the city center. From the airport, you can either take a taxi to the city center or hop on a bus (number 20 or 480).

How to get around Irkutsk?

Since the city center is pretty compact the best way to get around is on foot. We explored most of the things to see in Irkutsk in one day, just by leisurely walking around.

If you prefer, you can order a taxi. We hopped into a taxi from the train station to our hotel in the 130 Kvartal , which took only 10 minutes. We paid 200 Russian rubles (₽) via Gett .

Public transport

There is a bus and tram network in Irkutsk as well, though we haven't personally used this. You can buy a ticket on the bus (cash).

Where to stay in Irkutsk?

Kupechesky dvor hotel.

We stayed at the beautiful Kupechesky Dvor hotel, a unique reconstructed Siberian manor. We loved our stay here, it's a beautiful building (both on the inside as well as on the outside) and the location is absolutely perfect!

Right in the middle of the popular 130 Kvartal (read more below) and within walking distance of all the best things to do in Irkutsk.

Our spacious and lovely attic room had a large bed, a comfortable couch, a bathroom with a bath, and our baby's favorite feature: brightly colored soft carpet!

We arrived early in the morning and were very lucky our room was already available.

The Kupechesky Dvor staff was really nice and the breakfast (which could be served both in our room as well as in the cozy breakfast area next to the reception) was delicious.

We had a hard time deciding what to order (and may have ordered slightly too much because we wanted to try everything on the breakfast menu;-).

1. Stroll through the 130 Kvartal

The 130 Kvartal is a lovely pedestrian area in Irkutsk. There are lots of shops, restaurants, and cafes, located in beautiful (mostly recreated) wooden buildings.

Since all we had to do to visit this area was step out of our hotel, this was the first stop on our Irkutsk itinerary.

2. Walk along the Angara River

Fountain in the Angara river Irkutsk

One of the most popular weekend (family) activities is strolling along the Angara river, the only river flowing out of Lake Baikal (whereas more than 300 rivers flow into Lake Baikal).

There is a path along the water with lovely views of the river, Irkutsk train station, and the Ferris wheel.

3. Check out the beautiful old wooden houses

Irkutsk is famous for the beautiful historic wooden houses that can be found throughout the city. Some are in pristine condition, and others have almost crumbled to pieces.

Wooden house in Irkutsk Russia

The city is currently on a mission to restore many of these wooden houses to their former glory. These buildings have so much historical value, it would be a shame if they were lost.

The two most famous wooden houses are the Volkonsky House and the Trubetskoy House, both of which are museums where you can learn more about the Decembrists .

Trubetskoy House in Irkutsk

4. Visit a museum

While Irkutsk isn't that big, there are several interesting museums you can visit. As mentioned above, there are the Volkonsky and Trubetskoy Houses.

You could also visit the Museum of the History of Irkutsk, the Bronshteyn Gallery, or the Regional Museum.

5. Go statue hunting

The Irkutsk Babr in the 130 Kvartal

I don't know why but for some reason there are lots of statues in Irkutsk. The most famous one is the Irkutsk Babr , the symbol of Irkutsk (this statue can be found in the 130 Kvartal).

But there are lots more hidden throughout the city, finding as many as possible is a fun game to play when visiting Irkutsk with kids!

6. Admire the many churches

While Irkutsk doesn't have a cathedral with colorful onion-shaped domes, like St. Basil's Cathedral in Moscow or the Church of the Savior on Blood in St. Petersburg, it does have several beautiful churches.

Saviour's Church Irkutsk Russia

Next to the 130 Kvartal, you can find the Raising of the Cross Church, and close to the Irkutsk Region Administration office there is the beautiful Saviour's Church.

And as you are walking around the city center you'll come across several other beautiful churches (not all are open to the public)!

7. Head to a playground

Childrens Playground in Irkutsk

Ok, this one is only when you have kids. There are multiple fun playgrounds in Irkutsk, I marked two nice ones on the map but there are more.

In general, I feel Irkutsk is a much more kid-friendly city than Moscow and St. Petersburg . It's not nearly as busy, the distances are small and there are many green spaces.

The best things to do around Lake Baikal

Map with things to see in listvyanka (lake baikal).

Lake Baikal map

After you've explored Irkutsk for a day it's time to head to magnificent Lake Baikal , the deepest lake in the world containing approximately one-fifth of the world's surface water. We did a tour with Real Russia and had an action-packed program.

How far is Lake Baikal from Irkutsk?

Lake Baikal is approximately 70 kilometers from Irkutsk.

How to get from Irkutsk to Lake Baikal?

The easiest way to get there is by car, which takes one hour. Transportation was included in our Real Russia tour, however, you can also get there by (mini)bus. More information can be found here .

1. Lunch with Omul

Omul dish at Listvyanka Club restaurant

First, we had an extensive lunch at Listvyanka Club. Of course, this included omul, a fish native to Lake Baikal and a must-try on any Lake Baikal excursion.

Note for traveling families: this restaurant is very suitable for families as there is a baby high chair and a children's play area.

2. Visit the Baikal Museum

Baikal Museum Listvyanka

In the Lake Baikal Museum, you can learn about the geology and ecosystem of the lake.

3. Learn about the Shaman Stone

Shaman Stone Lake Baikal

At the point where the Angara river flows out of Lake Baikal, there is a 1.5-meter-high stone protruding from the water.

The stone is called Shaman Stone and there is an interesting legend behind its origin. Until this day the rock is a sacred place for shamanists.

4. Hike up to Chersky stone and viewpoint

Chersky stone Listvyanka view over Lake Baikal

From this 970-meter-high viewpoint, also called the Kamen Cherskogo, you have a beautiful view over Lake Baikal.

We hiked up in 20 minutes (with baby D. in his baby carrier ) but you can also take the cable car.

5. Admire St. Nicholas Church

St. Nicholas Church in Listvyanka

This beautiful wooden church is one of the last remaining wooden churches in Russia. You can enter the church, but be sure to dress appropriately.

For women: bring a scarf to cover your head. If you don't have one, scarves are provided at the entrance.

6. Stroll over Baikal Market and the beach

irkutsk travel

A nice place to buy a souvenir (or dried fish if you have a taste for it;-). Across the market is a stony beach, where you can dip your toe in the freezing water of Lake Baikal.

Trip to Irkutsk and Lake Baikal: in conclusion

Visiting Irkutsk and Lake Baikal was one of the highlights of our Trans Mongolian Express adventure. I highly recommend stopping here if you are traveling on the Trans Siberia or Trans Mongolian train.

Irkutsk is a pleasant place to spend a day or two and of course, Lake Baikal is such an impressive place to visit, it just wouldn't be right to skip it.

Granted, you have excellent views of the Lake from the train as well, but it's not the same as actually feeling the freezing temperature of the water with your own bare hands (or feet if you dare…).

I'm glad to have read this blog post on Irkutsk and Lake Baikal. So informative and helpful. From the pictures you posted, Irkutsk looks like a city worth checking out. And Baikal looks stunning. I'm sure the pictures don't do it justice though, compared to seeing it in person. I definitely plan on visiting there on my next overseas trip post Covid pandemic.

Thank you for your kind comment and I'm happy to hear I've inspired you to visit Irkutsk and Lake Baikal! You are right, the pictures can't do Lake Baikal justice, despite my many attempts to capture its sheer size... I wish you a wonderful trip once that's possible again.

All the best, Lotte

Understand [ edit ]

Irkutsk was founded in 1661 as a settlement for trading gold and furs. It was connected to Europe via a road constructed in 1760.

After the Decemberist Revolt of 1825, many Russian artists, officers, and nobles were sent into exile to Siberia for their part in the revolt against Tsar Nicholas I and in the late 1800s, 30% of the population of the city were exiles. Irkutsk became the major centre of intellectual and social life for these exiles, and much of the city's cultural heritage is a result of these exiles. Many of their wooden houses, adorned with ornate, hand-carved decorations, survive today in stark contrast with the surrounding Soviet apartment blocks. Around 1900, the city was nicknamed the " Paris of Siberia " due to its wide streets and ornate, continental architecture, but travellers today will find little resemblance with Paris.

During the civil war that broke out after the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917-1922, Irkutsk became the site of many furious, bloody clashes between the "Whites" and the "Reds" (aka Bolsheviks). A number of city landmarks remain from that era. In 1920, Kolchak, the once-feared commander of the largest contingent of anti-Bolshevik forces, was executed in Irkutsk, effectively destroying the anti-Bolshevik resistance.

Today, Irkutsk is the 6th largest city in Siberia, with a growing population of more than 590,000 people. It's home to several universities and a major branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, due to its proximity to Lake Baikal .

Climate [ edit ]

In July, the average temperature is 18°C (64°F) with a bit of rain, but by January, the temperature plunges in typically Siberian fashion to -19°C (-2°F). Early September finds the local foliage at its finest.

By car [ edit ]

Irkutsk is not only on the railway across Russia, but also on the 11,000 km Trans-Siberian Highway from St. Petersburg to Vladivostok.

Getting to and from IKT

The best way to get to and from the airport in Irkutsk is via taxi. There are usually many taxi drivers waiting at the airport, but be sure to negotiate a price before you set off. Paying around RUB 300 is considered a fair price to get from the airport to any place in the city center. In addition, you can use some of the apps popular among locals: Yandex taxi app and Maxim app. They work very well in Irkutsk, and you’ll always know in advance how much to pay.

Hockey fans may want to check out a local game. The Kontinental Hockey League starts up in the fall, with regular season games running until February, and pay-off games kicking off in March. Seeing a game is a fun, local experience and fans get pretty enthusiastic. Or, if you prefer to be on the ice (while not with a hockey stick in hand), skating is a popular activity in Irkutsk in the winter. Skates can be easily rented for RUB 150 to 300 per hour.

Get to know the city on foot with a walk along the Green Line, a walking route encompassing around five kilometres that takes you past 30 sites in the historical center of the city. Take your time exploring, seeing the sights, and stopping for coffee or something to eat along the way. You can use this map for your self-guided walk, or pick up a map from the tourist office , located in the city centre.

Depending on how much time you have, it’s worth the hour-long trip out of the city to see Lake Baikal, the oldest and deepest lake in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the summer, you can swim or go for a boat ride on the water. There’s also the option of exploring the lakeside village of Listvyanka. In winter, the lake freezes over so you can take a hovercraft ride across the ice.

When it comes to festivals and events, the Day of Irkutsk City takes place on the first Saturday of June and is a big event for the city. Usually the celebration starts in the morning with a lot of events in the city center, and continues all day long finishing with a concert and fireworks.

Maslenitsa Winter Festival, celebrated since Pagan times, is a celebration of the end of winter and happens during the week preceding Lent. One of the main attributes of this week-long celebration is eating blini (Russian pancakes). So basically, all week we eat pancakes at home, at work, and go to visit our relatives and eat pancakes there. All week long there are street celebrations, street markets, and other fun activities. The week ends with the big day on Sunday, when we burn down a massive scarecrow which serves as a symbol of winter.

Irkutsk on record

Get ready for your trip with a listen to “By the Wild Steppes of the Transbaikalia,” a Russian folk song about a man who sailed on Lake Baikal.

Irkutsk in books

Any book telling the story of explorations of Siberia, Lake Baikal, or the Decembrists will give you a lot of glimpses into the history of Irkutsk. That will give you the understanding of some regional issues and the history of how hard it was to build cities in such a severe climate.

Irkutsk is the most popular stop for Trans – Siberian travelers. In this fascinating city, which was once known as the “Paris of Siberia,” you will find people relatively more friendly and relaxed than those in Moscow and other major cities on the west. The city is relatively small, laid back, and most of the points of interest are easily walkable. Along many of the streets, you can see historical cozy – looking log cabins with decorated windows with detailed woodwork, which is typical Siberian architecture. Irkutsk is conveniently located about an hour away (by car or bus) from the southern shores of Lake Baikal – the oldest and deepest freshwater lake on our planet.

History of Irkutsk

Foundation of irkutsk.

The oldest traces of people who lived in the territory of Irkutsk are about 50 thousand years old. Settlements and burial grounds dating back to the Stone, Bronze, and Iron Ages were discovered on both banks of the Angara River.

Today’s Irkutsk originates from a fortified settlement laid by the Russian explorer Yakov Pokhabov in the summer of 1661. The territory on the bank of the Angara River at its confluence with the Irkut River (hence the name of the settlement) was favorable for agriculture and cattle breeding. The waterway provided communication with the Yenisei River and Lake Baikal.

In 1682, this settlement became the center of the Irkutsk Voivodeship, which included all the fortified settlements of the Baikal region. In 1686, Irkutsk was given the status of a town. After the settlement of Russian-Chinese relations by the Nerchinsk treaty (1689), trade caravans on the way to China (furs, tea, sugar, fabrics) began to pass through Irkutsk. In 1700, about 1,000 people lived in Irkutsk.

In 1719, the town became the center of the Irkutsk Province as part of the Siberian Governorate. In 1730, the merchant Lanin opened an ironworks. In 1745, the first stone residential building was built. In 1762, after the abolition of the state monopoly on the export of furs, the “golden age” of the Irkutsk merchants began. By the end of the 18th century, merchants began to play a leading role in the civil life of Irkutsk.

More historical facts…

Irkutsk - the gate of the Russian Empire to the Far East

In 1764, the Irkutsk Governorate was formed. In the 1770s, the Irkutsk fair was officially opened. In the 1780s, a public library, a theological seminary, a school, and a printing house appeared in the town. In 1790, the dilapidated walls of the fortress were demolished. Irkutsk became a kind of “window to the East” of the Russian Empire, all expeditions organized to the Far East, Mongolia, China, Alaska were formed in this town. From here the settlement of the Amur banks began.

In 1807, the first hospital was opened with private funds. In 1826, the first exiled Decembrists arrived in Irkutsk. In 1836, the first private bank was opened. In 1839, the first public library was opened. In the 1840s, Irkutsk turned into the “capital of the Lena River gold”, a place of concentration of capital of gold miners. In 1856, the population of Irkutsk was about 24,100 people.

In 1864, a telegraph line connected Irkutsk with St. Petersburg. In June 1879, a big fire almost completely destroyed the historic center of the town. The decline of the gold industry began in the late 1880s. In 1897, about 51,000 people lived in the city.

According to the initial project, the Trans-Siberian Railway was supposed to go along a shorter route north of Lake Baikal, away from Irkutsk. However, the project was changed and the first train arrived in Irkutsk in 1898. The railway caused the opening of new transport enterprises, revitalized coal mining and the forest industry, and contributed to the influx of population.

Irkutsk in the 20th century and beyond

During the First World War, more than 10 thousand residents of Irkutsk were mobilized. The industrial enterprises of the pre-revolutionary city were small and mostly artisanal. Most people were employed in trade, services, gardening, and handicraft production. During the years of the Civil War, power in Irkutsk changed several times.

In 1922-1923, Irkutsk was the center of Mongol-Buryat Autonomous Oblast, since 1930 - the center of the East Siberian Krai, since 1937 - Irkutsk Oblast. In 1923, the first stadium was built. The population of Irkutsk was 88,264 people. In 1936, the first reinforced concrete bridge named after Lenin was opened across the Angara River. In the 1930s, an aircraft factory, a metallurgical plant, a sewing factory, a soap factory, and other enterprises were built in Irkutsk.

In 1939, the population of the city was about 250,000 people. During the Second World War, about 20 thousand Irkutsk residents were drafted into the Red Army, about half of them were killed in battles. During the war, some enterprises from the western regions of the USSR were evacuated to Irkutsk. They remained in the city after the war.

In 1958, the Irkutsk Hydroelectric Power Station was commissioned. At this time, the city mainly consisted of wooden one-story houses. In the 1960-1970s, large-scale housing and industrial construction unfolded. In 1970, the population was about 451,000 people.

Until the early 1990s, Irkutsk remained one of the largest industrial centers of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic with high-tech mechanical engineering: aircraft manufacturing, instrument making, radio electronics; as well as the production of metallurgical and mining equipment, automotive parts, and machine tools. Other major industries were the production of building materials, furniture, printing, light, and food industries. The five largest factories of the city employed over 40 thousand people. In 1989, about 626,000 people lived in Irkutsk.

After the transition to a market economy, a lot of engineering and light industry enterprises were unable to adapt to the new economic conditions and closed. Over the next years, the population of the city began to decline. In 2008, the population of Irkutsk declined to 575,000 people. In 2009, population growth began again. In 2011, Irkutsk celebrated its 350th anniversary.

Irkutsk is a unique, old city, the capital of Eastern Siberia.located on the banks of the Angara River in the immediate vicinity of the reservoir formed by the dam of the Irkutsk Hydroelectric Power Station, about 76 from Lake Baikal. The nearest large city is Ulan-Ude located 457 km east of Irkutsk, on the other side of Lake Baikal. The distance to Moscow is about 5,200 km.

The Angara River divides Irkutsk into the right-bank and left-bank parts. The length of the river within the city is 29 km, the width under the Old Angara Bridge in the city center is about 300 meters; there are more than 30 islands on the river.

On the coat of arms of Irkutsk you can see a “babr” holding a sable in its mouth. From the 17th century, the word “babr” was used to name the Amur tiger inhabiting the Baikal region. There is an interesting story with this word.

In 1859, a large-scale reform of Russian heraldry was launched in order to correct errors accumulated over time. However, it led to new errors. The word “babr” was mostly known to local residents and the people involved in the reform decided that it was just a mistake in the Russian word “bobr” (meaning “beaver”) and approved the new description of the coat of arms of Irkutsk - a beaver holding a sable in its mouth.

However, not a single image was painted of the Irkutsk coat of arms with a beaver holding a sable in its mouth. Instead, the tiger received a large beaver tail and webbed hind legs and turned into a new, mythical animal.
