Here’s my step by step itinerary for spending one perfect day in enchanting Ljubljana. I give you a short history of Ljubljana and tell you what to do and see.

Ljubljana is the lovely small capital city of Slovenia. It’s pronounced lube-li-ana .

Ljubljana might be my favorite small city in Europe. It has everything a visitor could want — good looks, good food, and a certain serenity. The city is a nature lover’s dream.

Ljubljana has a cozy pedestrianized center clustered around a castle-topped hill. The city is filled with playful architecture, dragons, and specialty cafes and boutiques.

With this unique ambience, Ljubljana is easy to fall for. The city has fairytale vibe that’s sometimes compared to Salzburg.

Yet, Ljubljana is still an underrated hidden gem in Europe . The news is getting out about how cool the city is though. So plan a trip soon, before it’s “discovered.”

There are really no must visit attractions or museums in Ljubljana. It’s more about the laid back European experience and sitting at fresco cafes along the leafy river promenade.

Because of this, Ljubljana can easily be covered in one day. This itinerary tells you the best things to see and do in Ljubljana.

A Short History of Ljubljana

But first, let’s take a look at the history of Ljubljana, to give you some background for your one day in Ljubljana.

In ancient times, Ljubljana was on the trade route connecting the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. Legend holds that the Greek hero Jason and his Argonauts founded Ljubljana when they stayed in the city after stealing the Golden Fleece .

Some stories say that, while in Ljubljana, Jason slew a dragon. Others say it was St. George, the more famous dragon slayer. In either event, the dragon became the symbol of Ljubljana.

The earliest Ljubljana citizens lived in huts during the Neolithic and Bronze Ages. Later, Illyrians and Celts populated Ljubljana. They were overrun by the Huns, who were in turn run over by the Slavs. The Slavs are the ancestors of today’s Slovenians.

In 1335, Ljubljana became part of the Hapsburg Empire of Austria. For 6 centuries, Ljubljana absorbed Austrian culture, a vibe that persists today.

In 1809, Napoleon designated Ljubljana the capital of his “Illyrian provinces.” Ljubljana prospered and the Slovenian language came into use.

In 1895, Ljubljana was leveled by an earthquake. With donations from the Hapsburg Emperor, the city was rebuilt in the Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles that were so popular in Vienna . A generation later, architect Joze Plečnik added his distinctive classical-meets-modern designs.

In WWII, Ljubljana was occupied by the Italians and Nazis. There was a strong resistance movement and the city survived.

Post WWII, Slovenia was absorbed into the Communist empire. It was part of Yugoslavia until 1991. After the dissolution of the Yugoslavia federation, Ljubljana became the capital of one of Europe’s smallest countries, Slovenia.

Because it’s a university town, Ljubljana seems young and friendly. It’s a hodgepodge of different cultural influences. And Ljubljana is a “green” city that’s on the cutting edge of art, architecture, fashion, and micro pubs.

With one day in the Ljubljana, you’ll want to spend plenty of time wandering the irresistible cobbled old town.

There, you’ll find all the best places to visit in Ljubljana. You’ll get to see Ljubljana’s pretty riverfront and admire historic one-of-a-kind Art Nouveau and Baroque architecture.

One Day In Ljubljana AM

1. prešeren square.

Start your one day in Ljubljana at the city’s heart, Prešeren Square. With a rough triangular outline, the square is at the convergence of several major arteries.

The square is lined with historic structures, landmarks, and opulent buildings. It’s dominated by the statue of the poet France Prešeren and the salmon pink church, the Franciscan Church of the Annunciation.

The statue shows Prešeren being inspired by a nude muse. She’s depicted with a laurel branch and cloak.

Although these are identifying symbols of a muse, the statue was viewed as shocking when it was erected. For a few years, the citizens covered the statue with a tarp at night.

2. Triple Bridge

The Triple Bridge is one of Ljubljana’s most recognizable sites, designed by Plečnik. The structure consists of three bridges, which connect the modern city of Ljubljana to the Old Town. 

The middle part of the stone bridge already existed. Plečnik added two more sides to improve pedestrian traffic flow. In an innovative design, two staircases lead down from the pedestrian bridges to the river bank.

The Triple Bridge was inspired by the architecture of Venice . It features massive stone balustrades and lamps. From the bridge, you have nice views of Ljubljana Castle and the Ljubljanica River.

3. Franciscan Church of the Annunciation

You can’t miss the beautiful bright pink Church of the Annunciation on your Prešeren Square spin. The church was originally red, which is the color of the order of St. Francis . But, over time, it charmingly faded to pink.

The church was built in the mid 17th century, though the facade wasn’t finished until 1706. The facade features pinnacles, pilasters with Ionic capitals, niches, and a statue of the Virgin and Child on the pediment.

It’s worth stepping inside to see the ornate main alter and detailed wall frescoes.

There’s no charge to enter the church. But, like other churches in Ljubljana, it’s often closed in the mid afternoon.

4. Hauptmann House

Don’t miss the Hauptmann House on Prešeren Square. This famous Ljubljana house escaped the 1895 Ljubljana earthquake.

Its owner, the merchant Adolf Hauptmann, renovated it in the then-trendy Viennese Art Nouveau style. He used bright colors and stenciling.

Next to the Hauptmann House is a bust of Julija . She was the unrequited love of the poet Prešeren.

Ljubljana is filled with architecturally interesting bridges.

The Dragon Bridge   is the most iconic, sporting a dragon fantasy theme. Dragons are the very symbol of Ljubljana. As I mentioned above, they elude to the city’s mythical origin story.

Dragon Bridge was the design of Jurij Zaninovic. It was completed in 1901 and inaugurated to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the reign of Emperor Franz Joseph I.

The whimsical bridge was Ljubljana’s first reinforced concrete structure. It’s considered a masterpiece of Art Nouveau architecture.

Each corner of the bridge is festooned with a dragon sculpture made of sheet copper. Their talons grip the stone blocks as they roar. Along the parapets are 16 small griffin sculptures.

Other bridges to check out in Ljubljana include the pillared Cobblers’ Bridge (also known as the Shoemaker’s Bridge) and the love lock Butcher’s Bridge (shown above). Both bridges were designed by Plečnik.

The Cobblers’ Bridge exemplifies Plečnik’s style more than any other structure in Ljubljana. It’s a long balustraded platform. The bridge has clean lines adorned with classical columns topped with stone balls.

The Butcher’s Bridge is known for both its love locks and its whimsical sculptures. It has a glass walking belt on both sides.

There’s a wild-looking Prometheus sculpture, a mournful Adam and Eve being evicted from paradise, and mischievous lizards breaking out of eggs.

6. Ljubljana Cathedral | Church of St. Nicolas

Next, pop into Ljubljana Cathedral . The church is dedicated to St. Nicholas, the patron saint of fisherman and boatmen.

The intricate main door was created for the visit of Pope John II. It illustrates the history of Slovenia.

The cathedral’s interior has a stunning Italian Baroque style. Look up to admire the frescoed dome. It was painted by the Slovenian Matevž Langus in 1844 and was recently restored.

Behind the Cathedral of St. Nicholas is a food hall featuring meat and fish sections. The umbrella-covered stalls bear crates of seasonal and local fruits and vegetables.

7. Riverside Market | Lunch

For lunch, check out the Central Market in Vodnikov square. Following the curve of the river Ljubljanica, the market was built in 1940-44.

It has almost a Venetian feel. The halls overlooking the water have large semi-circular windows. The ones facing the street have a classical columned colonnade 

Inside, you’ll find plenty of cheese, fresh fruit, vegetables, and meat. The market is busiest on Saturday morning.

If you head down the spiral staircase, you can eat lunch at Ribca . Or, eat at one of the cafes along the lively river embankment, where you can do some quality people watching.

One Day in Ljubljana PM

In the afternoon of your 1 day in Ljubljana, you have many options. You can stroll through beautiful piazzas, visit Ljubljana Castle, take an architecture tour, admire street art, or cruise down the Ljubljanica River.

8. Town Hall

From Central Market, head southwest to Ljubljana’s Town Hall. This pretty building has been Ljubljana’s municipal seat since the 15th century. It often hosts free exhibitions of local artists.

In the early 18th century, the Gothic structure was redesigned in the Venetian Baroque style by the Italian architect Carlo Martinuzzi.

In the vestibule is a sculpture of Hercules and the Nemean Lion . A highlight in the main courtyard is a fountain depicting Narcissus by Francesco Robba.

9. Robba Fountain

The Robba Fountain, or Fountain Of Three Rivers, stand in front of City Hall. It’s one of Ljubljana’s best known Baroque monuments.

Created by Robba, the Carrera marble fountain reminded me of the Bernini fountains in Pizza Navona in Rome .

Three river gods hold urns gushing water into a shell-shaped pool. They represent the three rivers of historic Slovenian: the Sava, Krka and Ljubljanica. In the center is an obelisk.

The sculptures you see today on the square are modern copies. The original fountain, worn down by time and eaten away by urban pollution, was placed in the National Gallery in 2006.

10. Ljubljana Castle

In the afternoon of your one day in Ljubljana, explore Ljubljana Castle . It’s a short jog southeast from the City Hall.

From Dragon Bridge, you can take a steep hike up or an easy funicular ride to the castle. The funicular is open year round. It’s a great way to see the city from above.

At 13 euros, Ljubljana Castle isn’t exactly cheap to visit. But the ticket price includes a return trip on the funicular, entrance to three castle museums, and access to the viewing tower.

The 16th century citadel was built as a defense against Ottoman invasions. Later, it used as a war hospital, a prison, and a quarantine station.

The 16th century fortress is long gone. It fell into disrepair in the 17th century. But it was rebuilt in the 1940s and later renovated.

As a result, the castle isn’t really very historic. It’s a faux replica.

But there are now some worthwhile attractions, restaurants, and a gift shop. There’s also a “Virtual Castle” time machine tour/film in which a dragon narrates the layers of Ljubljana’s history.

The castle houses the Museum of Puppetry , a Slovenian History Exhibition, and photography exhibitions. You can climb 92 spiral steps up to the tower for panoramic views of the Old Town and the Julian Alps. 

11. Architecture Tour

If you’re an architecture fan, Ljubljana will suit. You may want to consider taking a  guided architecture tour . You’ll learn all about Plečnik and seeing Ljubljana’s beautiful Art Nouveau architecture, including the striking Vurnik House.

The architect Plečnik singularly defined the city’s aesthetic. Plečnik shaped Ljubljana, just like Gaudi shaped Barcelona and Bernini shaped Rome . You can also book a  guided tour of Plečnik’s works , which includes a river cruise.

Plečnik wanted to make Ljubljana the “Athens on the North.” He was influenced by the architecture of Vienna and Venice. Ljubljana is filled the inventive Art Nouveau architecture of Plečnik and others.

One must see building is the striking 100 year old Vurnik House . It’s Ljubljana’s most colorful house and a masterpiece of Slovenian Art Nouveau architecture. The structure was designed by Slovenian architect  Ivan Vurnik and his Viennese-born wife Helena.

You can’t go inside, but it’s enough just to cast your eyes on the colorful facade.

Another piece of architecture worth seeing is Plečnik’s own home . He lived from 1921-57. It’s a 15 minute walk from the historic center. The house has the original Plecnik-designed furniture and decorations.

There’s a permanent exhibition featuring Plecnik’s drawings, models, plans, and photographs. You can visit via a guided tour.

12. Congress Square

In the newer part of Ljubljana lies another of the main squares in Ljubljana, Congress Square or Kongresni trg. The square is surrounded by important buildings, including Ljubljana University, the Holy Trinity Parish Church, and Philharmonic Hall.

With its columned facade, the Trinity Church looks like a Roman temple, not a church. It was built between 1718 -26 in the Baroque style.

In contrast to the showy exterior, the interior is minimalist with plain white walls, which set off the sculptures. The main altar is made of African marble and designed by Italian Baroque sculptor Francesco Robba.

In a townhouse on Congress Square, you’ll also find the Museum of Illusions . It’s an offbeat museum that draws you into the world of illusions. This is a good attractions for kids.

13. Metelkova: Street Art & Museums

If you prefer street art, head over to the Metelkova Mesto district. It’s just a short 10 minute stroll from the northern edge of the Old Town. But you’ll feel like you’re in a fantastical playground.

The area is an old military barracks that, rather than being torn down, became a designed place for creativity. It’s an alternative culture zone filled with graffiti art that has an edgy bohemian feel.

The area has also found new life as Ljubljana’s Museum Quarter. You can visit the  Slovenian Ethnographic Museum , the  National Museum of Sloven ia  and the  Museum of Contemporary Art Metelkova .

Aside from the cutting edge street art, there are pop up flea markets and temporary exhibitions. You can also take a  guided street art tour , which I always think are fun.

One Day In Ljubljana: Late Afternoon

14. river cruise.

Ljubljana is cut in the middle by the emerald green Ljubljanica River. You can simply stroll down the riverside.

Or, in the late afternoon, hop a boat cruise and glide down the river. The 45 minute ride will give you a unique perspective on the city. Cruises depart near the Triple Bridge.

Alternatively, you can take a 2 hour stand up paddle boating tour on the river.

15. Shopping

If you like shopping, you’ll love Ljubljana. Its main street, which changes names from Mestni trg to Start trg, is lined with countless quaint shops and boutiques. You can pick up all sorts of souvenirs and/or clothing.

Some of the boutiques I liked were Zoofa, Fox, and Zebra Goa Na Luno.

16. The Skyscraper

If you don’t want to cruise or shop, head to the Ljubljana’s skyscraper, Nebotičnik . Built in 1933, it was the first skyscraper in Slovenia. It’s a magnificent building, with Art Deco designs inside and out.

For the best views in Ljubljana, take the free elevator up to the top floor. There’s an observation deck, along with some pricey restaurants. On the 12th floor, you can step outside.

One Day In Ljubljana: Evening

End your 1 day in Ljubljana with a cocktail and great meal. Stop in at  Wine Bar Suklje . Try one of Ljubljana’s trendy craft breweries or hop on a guided beer tasting tour .

In Ljubljana, you can also take advantage of the Burek confectioneries, which are traditional in the Balkans. A burek is a filo pastry pasty that comes in all shapes — tubes, wedges, or spirals. It’s stuffed with all different ingredients — cheese, spinach, meat, and potatoes. 

If you visit Ljubljana on a Friday (from late March through October), you can feast at  Open Kitchen . This event takes place in Pogacarjev Square.

Chefs from local restaurants set up in booths offering up Slovenian, Thai, Mexican, and Argentinian fare.

The beautiful seaside town of Piran in Slovenia sits on a slender finger of a peninsula. It’s completely encircled by the sparkling Adriatic sea.

You’ll feel like you’ve been power beamed to  Tuscany . It’s a little slice of  Italy . You can drive or book a  day trip tour from Ljubljana .

Semi-crumbling pastel facades that  Michelangelo  might have sculpted rise above ancient maze-like streets. Venetian architecture is adorned with tracery windows.

The compact historic core is one of the best preserved medieval sites in the Mediterranean. Piran’s reminiscent of  Venice , but without the canals or hordes of tourists.

Tartini Square is the heart of Piran’s old town. It’s a marble-paved, sherbet-toned, red roofed oval.

Tartini Square is full of chic bars, alfresco cafes, and colorful houses. It’s a splendid place to snack and people watch.

2. Lake Bled

Lake Bled is Slovenia’s top alpine resort. Lake Bled sits placidly in the shadow of the Julian Alps in Slovenia, thronged by forests and mountains. It’s a frankly outrageous combination of blue and green.

You can also book a  small group day trip from Ljubljana to Lake Bled . Or a  private guided day tour to Lake Bled . Or a  tour that includes Bled Castle .

Once there, take the 3 mile walk around the lake. Stop to take in the contrasting green wooded and azure views and admire the swans.

If you’re in a rush, you can  rent a bike  and cycle the lake. If you want a real hike, take the one hour hike up to the best viewing point, Malo Osojnica on the western side of Lake Bled.

You can also visit the 11th century  Bled Castle ,  which is often hailed as Slovenia’s most ancient castle. It’s perched 130 meters above the lake’s walking path. The castle’s red turrets and roofs make a showy splash against the blue sky.

In the center of the lake is a small island and the Church of the Assumption. Flat bottomed boats ferry people back and forth. Local legend holds that if you ring the church’s bell three times, your wish will come true.

3. Predjama Cave Castle

If a medieval fairytale type castle is one your agenda, look no further. Less than an hour from Ljubljana lies one of Europe’s most photogenic castles,  Predjama Castle . The castle is a must visit beautiful place in Slovenia.

Predjama Castle is one of the country’s most popular attractions. Tucked into the mouth of a towering cliff, it’s a cave fortress filled with secret tunnels and hidden caves.

Predjama Castle’s whitewashed walls are set off by the landscape and natural rock. It’s foreboding and exudes mystery.

What makes this place special and visually appealing is that the castle is partly built into the cave. Underneath the castle, there’s a massive cave. You don’t really need to go inside. But it’s a scenic spot to stop for a drink or coffee.

4. Postojna Caves

You can combine a visit to Predjama Castle with the Postojna Caves. This is the largest cave system in Slovenia, spanning 12 miles. 

You board an open air train, which slings you into a gaping hole in the mountain. One of the caverns is lit with chandeliers.

Once there, you’ll follow a guide down well lit paths. As you hike up the “Big mountain,” you’re surrounded by a sea of stalagmites and stalactites. 

Hiking back down, you’ll pass “Spaghetti Hall” (with long skinny stalactites and curtains of rocks) to the “Concert Hall.”

5. Skocjan Caves

The dramatic Škocjan Caves have been a UNESCO site since 1986. These subterranean caves are gargantuan, spooky, and an absolute must visit if you’re traveling through Slovenia.

You’ll see stalagmites, stalactites, and interesting rock formations. You visit on a 1.5 hour guided tour through the lighted passageways. In the Grand Cavern, the mighty Reka River crashes through.

Tips For Visiting Ljubljana

1. how to get to ljubljana.

Ljubljana is well connected. You can fly into the Joze Pucnik Airport. To get to the city center, you can take a taxi or book a private transfer .

There’s also a train and bus station, right next to each other.

I drove to Ljubljana from Croatia . You can park your car in one forth park and ride lots. Parking spaces in the city are limited.

2. How To Get Around Ljubljana

Ljubljana is entirely walkable. You won’t need to take public transportation.

You might also consider biking, which is popular with the Ljubljana residents. The bike lanes are well marked and you can pick one up at the Slovenian Tourist Information Center. Or just grab one at one of the many bike stations.

If you want to take a taxi, call and book a ride in advance. Or you could be ripped off. There are no set taxi rates in Ljubljana.

You won’t need a car in Ljubljana. And it’s not a car friendly city.

But it might be handy to have a car to day trip from Ljubljana or road trip around Slovenia. You just need to ensure that you have a place to park your car at your accommodation. And when driving in Slovenia, you need a vignette to use the roads and highways.

3. Where To Stay In Ljubljana

I stayed at an Air Bnb when I last visited Ljubljana. But there are a lot of cute boutique hotels in Ljubljana: Hotel Angel , Zlata Iadjica Boutique Hotel , and the Antiq Palace Hotel and Spa .

You can also swank it up at the Vander Urbani Resort on the river embankment or the Grand Hotel Union .

4. Currency

Slovenia uses the euro for currency. The language is Slovenian. But many Slovenians speak flawless English. I had no problem communicating.

5. Tours of Ljubljana

The Tourist Office offers a free hour walking tour that leaves at 11:00 am. You don’t even need to make a reservation. Just show up at the meeting place on the stairs of the pink church in Prešeren Square.

One Day in Ljubljana – The Best One Day Ljubljana Itinerary

1 Day in Ljubljana might not seem like much time when, in fact, it’s quite enough to get acquainted with the city. And to help you make the very most of your time, I’ve put together the best 1 Day Ljubljana Itinerary. We recently spent just over 24 hours in Ljubljana, so we can share what we got up to, and what we consider to be the best places to visit in Ljubljana in a day. We cover all of the Ljubljana hotspots, where to eat, sleep, and party, as well as all of our top tips, to ensure you have the best possible time exploring the city.

It’s impossible to skip past Ljubljana when planning a trip to Slovenia. The capital serves as a gateway to Lake Bled, Triglav National Park, and other areas of the country. We knew very little about the city before our recent visit, but were thankful we took some time to look around. What we discovered didn’t feel like a city at all. Instead, Ljubljana (pronounced loob-yah-nah) appears like a whimsical little town. Legends of heroes and dragons add to its charm, and you can’t help but feel you’ve stepped into a make-believe children’s book.

Ljubljana is a small and compact city, but it has a lot to offer. On the one hand, you have beautiful architecture and charming cobbled streets. On the other, a more alternative side with its street art, cool restaurants, and quirky cafes. You can easily cover the main attractions in one day; however, if you find yourself with more time to spare, it won’t be wasted. We could never tire of relaxing days alongside the Ljubljanica River drinking coffee and immersing in the laidback vibe of the city.

Is 1 Day in Ljubljana Enough?

Let’s face it, one day isn’t a lot of time. But if you plan your 24 hours in Ljubljana wisely, you should find it enough to get acquainted with the city. Thankfully, Ljubljana is compact and straightforward to navigate. You can quickly get around on foot, which means that ultimately, you end up seeing a lot more than if you were taking public transport.

If it’s your first time visiting Ljubljana, naturally you will want to see the major tourist spots. These spots are landmarks of the city and popular for a good reason. However, what makes Ljubljana so appealing, in my opinion, is how laidback and idyllic it is. So don’t feel guilty for taking some time to chill and appreciate the true essence of the city. 

Where to Stay for One Night in Ljubljana

Naturally, there is no shortage of accommodation options in Ljubljana, regardless of your budget or taste. However, if you only have 24 hours in Ljubljana, it makes sense to locate yourself centrally. This way, you can avoid journey time eating into your valuable exploring time. I’ve made some hotel suggestions below, or you can click the link for a list of all hostels, guesthouses, and hotels in the city. 

Hostel $ – Turn Hostel – If you’re travelling solo, your best and cheapest option will be to stay in a hostel. Though more expensive than other European cities, there are a few to choose from in Ljubljana, but Turn Hostel seems to be the best rated of them all. Set in an excellent location, walking distance to all the main attractions, Turn Hostel provides the ideal base for your adventures in the city. Featuring clean rooms, comfortable beds, and great facilities, on hostel standards this is one of the best!

Budget $ – Homestay Rosa Lia –  During our short stay in Ljubljana, this is where we stayed, and for those on a budget, we would highly recommend it. As the name suggests, this is a homestay, so you are provided with a room in an apartment. The bathroom, kitchen, and communal areas are shared with other guests. The apartment itself is small, but the rooms were very spacious, and we loved that we could prepare meals in the kitchen. It’s a little bit outside of the city centre, but if you don’t mind the short walk, this is a fantastic budget option in Ljubljana.

Mid-Range $$ – Art Hotel – Located in the heart of Ljubljana, Art Hotel is a 3* establishment that offers divine comfort and incredible facilities. The rooms are bright, spacious, and modern, complete with all the amenities you need for a comfortable stay. Several of the cities attractions are in walking distance of the hotel, along with a variety of bars and restaurants. At the hotel, you can enjoy a drink at the onsite bar and an excellent buffet breakfast in the restaurant.

Luxury $$$ – Intercontinental Ljubljana – If you’re seeking 5* comfort, there is no better place to treat yourself than at Intercontinental Ljubljana. Situated in the city centre, this luxurious hotel features a comprehensive wellness and spa centre, an indoor pool, a rooftop restaurant, and an onsite bar. The guest rooms come modernly furnished and equipped with all the amenities you might expect at a 5* hotel. It’s also in walking distance of Ljubljana’s main attractions and nightlife.

OK, let’s dive into our suggested itinerary for one day in Ljubljana. I’ve tried to make it as strategic as possible, so to minimise your travel time, and ensure you experience as much of the city as you can. However, remember what I said; it’s also quite enough to relax and enjoy the atmosphere, so feel free to switch up the itinerary as you see fit.

Ljubljana Castle

After an energising breakfast at your hotel or one of the restaurants I recommend further down, it’s time to start your day at Ljubljana Castle. Ljubljana Castle is easily the most significant landmark in Ljubljana. Set on a 375-metre hill called  ‘Castle Hill’ , you can often spot the medieval fortress as you’re wandering the old town.  

The castle grounds are vast, boasting a wide range of entertainment from museums and exhibitions to restaurants and nightclubs. Furthermore, the castle’s outlook tower and fortifications offer some of the most spectacular views of the city. To see it all, you could easily spend the entire morning here.

To get up to the tower, you can walk as we did, which took us around 15-minutes, moving at a steady pace. Otherwise, you can take the funicular railway. As we were on a budget, we didn’t go inside the castle on this occasion. But we marvelled the grounds and breathtaking views which is completely free. To explore inside, you can go alone, take an audio tour, or even try the  castle escape room . The latter looks like a lot of fun – especially if you’re travelling with little ones.

Next up you are going to make your way over to Ljubljana’s old town, stopping by the Central Market on the route. Made up of an outdoor and indoor section, this is your opportunity to buy and sample locally produced goods.   

When we visited Ljubljana in Winter , there wasn’t much going on at the outside market; however, you’ll generally find a variety of stalls selling fruit & veggies, clothes, souvenirs, and other locally produced items.  

On the other hand, the indoor section (look out for Plecnik’s Covered Market), you’ll find a vast selection of traditional cheeses, meats, and bakery items. Most will allow you to sample the goods, but naturally, it’s preferred if you try and buy.

Dragon Bridge

Your next stop will be the fantasy-themed Dragon Bridge. Celebrating the mythical history of the city, Dragon Bridge is one of the most photographed spots in the city. Featuring 4 ornate dragons, two on either side, it’s gothic appearance is enough to conjure up all the Game of Thrones vibes! While there are many famous bridges in Ljubljana, this one was by far our favourite.

Butchers Bridge

Our next famous bridge of the day will be the Butchers Bridge. While the name might sound quite aggressive, its current purpose is anything but. Nowadays, the bridge is famous for the thousands of love locks attached to it. It might be tacky, but we have a soft spot for anything with love locks. All those declarations of eternal love add to the romance of idyllic Ljubljana. 

Prešeren Square

If you’ve ever seen photographs of Ljubljana, it’s likely you’re already familiar with picturesque Prešern Square. The recognisable landmark here is the Franciscan Church of Annunciation. With its baroque pink facade, the church is one of the most popular Slovenia photography spots .  

If any events are happening in the city, the square is where it’s at. For us in December, it was the Christmas markets, but throughout the year there are concerts, festivals, parades and political events amongst others.

The area surrounding Preseren Square is entirely pedestrianised, so you can walk around at ease, taking in all of the beautiful architecture. Several roads sprout off from the square, which are worth wandering if you like to shop or browse.

Cankarjevo Nabrezje

By this point, you should be edging towards lunchtime, or at the very least you’ll be needing a coffee or refreshment. Thankfully, Cankarjevo Nabrezje is just a 2-minute walk from the square – A scenic and pedestrian-only street that runs adjacently to the Ljubljanica River.  

The area is a popular spot amongst locals and tourists alike, who come to enjoy a drink or a meal overlooking the river. Regardless of the time of year, the cafes spill out onto the scenic cobbled street so you can enjoy the view all the way up to Preseren Square.

Triple Bridge

As the name suggests, Triple Bridge is a collection of three bridges across the Ljubljanica River. It’s the most famous of bridges in Ljubljana, thanks to its distinctive design, connecting Preseren square with the modern city. 

Historically, the central bridge was built to replace a medieval wooden bridge in the mid-1800s. Later, in the early 1900s, they extended it to include the two side bridges, intended for pedestrians. They serve no real purpose as no vehicles are permitted to cross the bridge; however, the result is a unique architectural gem.  

Town Square

Ljubljana’s Town Square is one of the most picturesque spots in the city boasting a wealth of charming architecture. The square houses the Town Hall, City Art Museum, the Lichtenberg House and a replica of the Baroque Robba Fountain. Not to mention various boutiques and restaurants which make it the ideal spot for an afternoon stroll.

Metalkova Art District

Should you have some time to spare at the end of the day, I highly recommend checking out the eccentric Metelkova area. In stark contrast to the idyllic old town, this abandoned army barracks is now a cultural centre and outlet of artistic expression. Adorned in unique street art and graffiti, Metalkova is considered the trendy area of Ljubljana. 

With that, various pubs and clubs have opened doors here, attracting a somewhat alternative crowd. We didn’t have a chance to experience the nightlife scene sadly; however, we loved exploring here during the day.  

The only thing I would say is perhaps it isn’t wise to visit alone. Although we never experienced it ourselves, many  recent reviews  claim to have been offered drugs or witnessed drug-related activity. 

Nevertheless, I hope you get to experience the weird and wonderful vibe at Metalkova, as it’s a very unusual place that was a highlight of our Ljubljana itinerary.

If you have longer than a day in Ljubljana, that’s great. You have time to check out some of the less touristy stuff to do in the city, and perhaps even take a day trip to other areas of the country. Here are a few suggestions for inspiration. 

Art Galleries

We are both art lovers, and considering its size, I was surprised to learn that there are many art galleries in Ljubljana. Unfortunately, our itinerary didn’t allow enough time to visit any on this occasion, but next time, a nd there will be a next time,  we will make it a priority. River Cruise

Arguably one of the best ways to appreciate this peaceful and romantic city is on the water. With many significant landmarks set upon the banks of the Ljubljanica river, a river cruise is a perfect way to kick back, relax, and enjoy the view.  

Depending on your budget, there are several tours you can choose from. Some provide 1-hour of sightseeing, others are private tours, and there are even romantic dinner cruises.  Ljubljanica River Cruises offer a variety of boat trips at a competitive rate, so it’s worth checking them out before your trip.

City Bike Tour

Another way to enjoy Ljubljana from a different perspective is with a city bike tour. A bike tour allows you to experience this lively capital on two wheels and learn all about the cities history from a registered local guide. Not only will you explore the cities main attractions, but the tour will lead you outside of the city centre where you’ll discover some of Ljubljana’s hidden gems.

Day Trips from Ljubljana

If you have the time, you won’t regret taking a day trip or 2 to see other areas of this glorious country. Many choose to rent a car when travelling in Slovenia, as it’s super easy and quick to drive everywhere. However, you can also take public transport to many places, or otherwise, go on an organised tour. Below are some locations we recommend visiting on a day trip from Ljubljana, or you can check out the full list here. 

Day Trip to Lake Bled & Lake Bohinj

If you only have the time to take one day trip from Ljubljana, we highly recommend you visit Lake Bled & Lake Bohinj. Or at the very least, you must visit Lake Bled during your time in Slovenia. Is it busy & touristy? Yes. But only really if you visit in the peak season (June to August). Otherwise, it is rather pleasant. Few places live up to expectation thanks to the Instagram editing game; however, Lake Bled surpassed itself. We visited  Lake Bled in Winter , and the snow-capped mountains made this location even more picturesque.  

Located just 30-minutes from Bled, Lake Bohinj is another crystalised alpine lake. If you are short for time, it’s possible to visit both Bled and Bohinj on the same day. Located within Postojna Cave Park, both Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle are considered national gems in Slovenia. A visit here makes for a truly adventurous day trip from Ljubljana. Firstly, Postojna is said to be one of the most captivating and impressive caves in the entire world. To explore the millions of years old subterranean, you must take a magical underground train ride where you’ll encounter a variety of unique cave formations, wildlife, and fauna.

Located within the same national park, Predjama Castle looks like something out of a twisted fairy tale. Perched amid a 123-metre-high cliff, it is the largest cave castle in the world. The medieval structure is both mysterious and magnificent, inspiring several feature films, including the Game of Thrones. Again, you can plan your own trip, or go as part of an organised tour.

Much to our surprise, Ljubljana is a happening city with a thriving culinary scene and diverse nightlife. Unfortunately, we didn’t stay long enough to try too many places out, but we asked our local friends Katja and Katka for a full low down on the best nightlife and restaurants in the city. Tips & Advice for Spending 1 Day in Ljubljana

Here I’ll list some of the travel tips that we accumulated during our stay in Ljubljana. Hopefully, they will help you have a hassle-free break in the city. 

Currency & Exchanging Money

The unit of currency in Slovenia is the Euro. We recommend travelling with some cash in your pocket; however, if you don’t want to carry large sums, there are several ways to  exchange money in Ljubljana . Though naturally, some are more cost-effective than others.

The easiest option is to withdraw cash directly from an ATM. Some ATMs may ask if you want to proceed  “with or without conversion” . Whatever you do, never proceed with conversion because it leads to disastrous exchange rates. Trust us; we learnt the hard way. Instead, choose to be charged in the local currency, and you’ll receive a far more favourable rate on your conversion.

Another money-saving tip is to carry a  currency card such as Easy Fx rather than withdrawing money using your debit or credit cards. This way, you can make purchases, withdraw cash and make transfers, all with no international fees. Again, so long as you proceed ‘without conversion.’ 

Despite being a European city, Ljubljana is surprisingly affordable. If you’re careful with your money, you can comfortably live on £30/$40 a day. Actually, we averaged for less than that, but we ate cheap, stayed in hostels, walked everywhere, and didn’t splurge on every attraction. 

Getting Around

As I already pointed out, Slovenia is a relatively small country compared to most in Europe. That means, getting around is pretty straight forward. But, best of all, it doesn’t take a lot of time! For this reason, many choose to  rent a car when travelling in Slovenia . The roads are quiet and in good condition, and you can cover most of the country in a week to 10 days. Not to mention, the breathtaking views you’ll be rewarded with along the way.  

If, like us, you don’t have that much time, but still want to see parts of the country other than Ljubljana, there are a couple of options. The first is to go on an organised tour like the ones we recommend above. Or you can try your hand at the public bus network. We used it a couple of times during our time in Slovenia, and despite warnings from our friends, it seemed to be reliable enough. Be sure to use the official  Slovenian bus network website  to plan your route.

Once you’ve arrived at your designated city or town, it’s highly unlikely you’ll need to use public transport. Even in Ljubljana, Slovenia’s biggest city, we managed to get around everywhere on foot. There are, however, city buses available in most places should they be required. 

The Best Time to Visit

There is no right or wrong time to visit Slovenia, as it highly depends on what you want from your trip. The country sees mostly dry conditions from May to September, so this is an ideal time for hiking, adventure sports, and visiting the nature parks. In December to March, however, the alpine northwest sees abundant snow, so it is perfect conditions for winter sports. We visited during December, and while we didn’t ski or anything, we loved how beautiful the landscapes were in Winter. We were fortunate enough to get some snow, and it added a sprinkle of magic to our trip. 

Staying Safe

In short, Slovenia is exceptionally safe. So much so, it often finds it’s way into various top 10 lists of the safest countries in the world. That’s not to say crimes never happen. But they are rare and can often be avoided by exercising caution.

Like many places, theft and pickpocketing pose the biggest risk to tourists. We suggest keeping your belongings close to you at all times and use a small padlock or compartmental bag to keep your valuables safe. 

When travelling at night, avoid being alone in parks or dimly lit areas.  

For LGBT Travellers in Slovenia, there is little risk of hate crime; however, you may find rural areas to be more conservative than the bigger cities.

Just one concern… you had mentioned to visit Bled Castle first on the itinerary, but are you referring to the Ljubljana castle? Bled castle is in the city of Bled less than an hour drive away.

And while you can rent a car and do a road trip through Slovenia, the good news is that Slovenia is small enough, and Ljubljana is almost exactly in the center of the country, that it is extremely easy to just base yourself out of Ljubljana and do a series of day tours and have a fantastic experience.

1. triglav national park.

Triglav National Park has many of Slovenia’s most stunning landscapes, waterfalls, and mountains, and this small group, full-day tour takes you to some of the very best spots.

You’ll stop by Lake Bled to admire the views, then visit the Pericnik and Kozjak waterfalls (two of my favorite waterfalls in all of Slovenia), see the gorgeous Soca River and the Great Soca Gorge . You also have the option to add on a white water rafting excursion on the emerald-green Soca River, which you definitely need to do!

You’ll also drive up the 25 switchbacks of the Vrsic Mountain pass (see cover photo for this post), see the Russian Chapel , stop at the peaceful and picturesque Zelenci Nature Preserve , and finally visit the alpine Lake Jasna , surrounded by mountain peaks.

2. Lake Bled + Vintgar Gorge

Lake Bled is an absolutely fairytale location, and is truly a must-do day trip from Ljubljana. This gorgeous blue lake has a small island with a church in the center of it, and several things to see and do around the lake.

On this tour , you’ll start at the Bled Castle , an interesting medieval castle that overlooks the lake from a cliff. You’ll go out on a traditional pletna boat on the lake to visit the island, where you’ll have some time to explore and visit the church, and thereafter some free time in Bled.

You’ll also visit the Vintgar Gorge , a magical canyon with tall walls, a river running down the middle, and a boardwalk through the gorge where visitors can walk through. The Vintgar Gorge is a top highlight for anyone visiting the Lake Bled area.

You’ll finish the day at nearby Lake Bohinj , the largest lake in Slovenia, surrounded by tall mountains, before heading back to Ljubljana. Lake Bled is just 45 minutes from Ljubljana.

3. Postojna Cave + Predjama Castle

A visit to the Slovenian cave systems is one of the most popular day tours from Ljubljana! This small group tour is led by a knowledgeable and engaging Slovenian local who shares stories and information about the country as you drive from Ljubljana out to the caves in the countryside.

You’ll first visit Postojna Cave , where you’ll take an open-air train ride deep into the cave system. A guide takes you along the route, sharing stories and pointing out notable features.

You’ll walk through the series of beautiful grand caverns filled with really fun features – stalactites and stalagmites of all shapes and sizes on various levels throughout the room, bridges, and tunnels.

Postojna Cave is also famous for their cave dragons – albino amphibians (like a salamander) that live solely in the waters of the cave. You’ll be able to observe 5-6 of these dragons that live in an aquarium at the end of the tour.

After Postojna Cave, you’ll drive 10 minutes to nearby Predjama Castle , which has some cave features and is built into the side of a cliff ! You get to explore the castle and learn its history, and even visit some of the caverns in the rock behind and adjacent to the castle.

4. Skocjan Cave

An alternative to visiting Postojna + Predjama is instead to visit Skocjan Cave , This 8-person tour from Ljubljana takes you out on a full-day adventure to visit Škocjan caves.

Skocjan Cave , a UNESCO World Heritage Site , is very different from Postojna Caves, as there are fewer stalagmites and stalactites and cave formations. Instead, you get to walk on a cliffside path in a massive cavern with towering walls and a river rushing down below. You’ll cross a bridge spanning the gorge , and it all gives big Lord of the Rings vibes.

After the cave, you’ll continue on to the coast to enjoy a blissful afternoon by the sea in Piran. Note that admission fees are not included in the tour price.

5. Wine Tour in the Vipava Valley

The western region of Slovenia south of Triglav National Park is known as “ Slovenia’s Tuscany ,” and is filled with vineyard after vineyard after vineyard . The area is incredibly rural and not highly trafficked at all, and tiny villages are perched at the top of rolling hills, with rows of vines spread out in the hills and valleys beneath. It’s a breathtaking, idyllic part of the country… that also happens to make extremely good wine.

Piran is Slovenia’s beautiful coastal, pedestrian-only city on the Adriatic Sea. It is filled with Venetian architecture, a charming harbor, waterfront walkways next to clear water, colorful buildings, and narrow winding streets.

On this tour , you’ll go on a sightseeing tour with your guide through the adorable city, seeing the top sites and learning about the history of the town. You’ll visit the Church of St George + Bell Tower (for incredible views), walk along the old city walls , and stop in Tartini Square , the expansive main square in town.

7. Logar Valley

The Logar Valley is part of an oft-overlooked mountain range in north-central Slovenia, that has long, narrow valleys filled with meadows and forests that end in tall, towering mountains.

The Rinka waterfall is a must-see attraction here, and there are several scenic hikes through the valleys, or more intense hikes up into the mountains. Biking through the hills and valleys is also a popular activity here, or you can always just relax and enjoy the views.

8. Maribor and Ptuj

Maribor is Slovenia’s second-largest city, located on the eastern edge of the country, and Ptuj is a small town just 30 minutes from Maribor. Both cities are incredibly charming, and you’ll see a lot of really pretty architecture from when Slovenia was part of the Austrian Empire.

In Maribor you can visit the Glavni Trg Square and Slomskov Trg Square , the Stari Most Bridge for views over Old Town, and the Lent riverside neighborhood. There’s also the Maribor Castle Museum , and the oldest vine in the world (which is over 400 years old and gated off on a street by the river)

Ptuj (pronounced p-too-ee) is *so* quaint and charming, and has beautiful, colorful buildings with decorations and ornamentations around the facades. Ptuj also has a cool castle on the hill above town that you can visit. You’ll also enjoy all the picturesque vineyards around Ptuj.

This tour is definitely in the region of Slovenia that most people don’t visit, so you’ll be with very few other tourists in these cities. Maribor is 1.5 hours from Ljubljana.

9. Venice , Italy

The romantic city of Venice is on just about everyone’s bucket list, and Venice is only 2.5 hours from Ljubljana – who can pass that up?

10. Trieste, Italy

Trieste , Italy is a coastal city just across the border of Slovenia, just north of Piran, and only 1 hour from Ljubljana. This Italian city was actually part of Slovenia until 1918, at the end of World War I, but it definitely has an Italian vibe – with Roman statues around the main square and, grand, colorful buildings throughout the city.

This private tour (that includes only your group), takes you on a guided tour around the main attractions of the city, including the Piazza Unita Square and Capitol Hill. 11. Plitvice Lake National Park, Croatia

Just south of Slovenia is the beautiful country of Croatia , which is home to the incredible Plitvice Lakes National Park . This park has an Upper Lakes and Lower Lakes section, with walking paths and trails, waterfalls galore, and rivers and streams throughout the park. In total, there are 16 lakes in the National Park, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Skofja Loka

This fairytale village is one of the easiest day trips from Ljubljana for travelers hoping to discover the country independently, as it’s located less than an hour from Ljubljana by bus!

Built along the Sora River and overlooked by the beautiful Skofja Loka Castle, Skofja Loka is one of the most beautiful towns in Slovenia, with a well-preserved medieval center to explore in addition to its castle, viewpoints, and one of the oldest bridges in Europe.

Velika Planina

Without a doubt, Velika Planina is one of the most unique day trips from Ljubljana.

Located north of Ljubljana, the small city of Kranj is a fantastic day trip for those looking to enjoy a quieter city in Slovenia (though Kranj is the 4th largest city in the country, it’s home to only around 37,000 people).

The best-known feature of Kranj is its series of underground war tunnels built to protect citizens from WWII bombings, which you can tour today.

Kranj is also home to beautiful streets, an interesting ossuary, and a couple of lovely viewpoints from which to admire the city.

Of all the day trips from Ljubljana listed here, this one is the biggest stretch to make, but Venice is such a bucket list destination that it’s worth mentioning!

It takes about 2.5-3 hours to drive from Ljubljana to Venice (be sure to check with your car rental company to ensure your contract allows you to cross into Italy), and we recommend getting an early start to avoid traffic.

Since Venice doesn’t allow cars in its center, you’ll need to park in Mestre and then take a ferry into Venice’s center–but since arriving in central Venice via ferry is a tourist experience in itself, it’s hardly a chore!

I’ll be quite honest: this is a long, tiring day trip, and it isn’t for everyone. Slovenia is one of these unique countries that offer diverse attractions for each taste yet are compact enough that you can see most of the best places even in a short time. In fact, you can visit some of the best attractions in Slovenia on day trips from Ljubljana. The capital city of Slovenia is centrally located and in many cases, you don’t need more than just one hour to reach destinations of the best Ljubljana day trips.

When planning your Slovenia itinerary you can base yourself in the capital and venture to the country for one-day excursions (and in the meantime enjoy all the best things to do in Ljubljana ). There are so many diverse options for day trips from Ljubljana: nature getaways, active things to do, historical towns and more so everyone should find something to fulfill their interests.

Starting in 2002 I visited Slovenia so many times I can’t count anymore. During most of my visits, I stayed in the capital and traveled around the country on day trips from Ljubljana. It was super easy and doable and I didn’t need to worry about carrying all my belongings with me.

The good thing about traveling in Slovenia is that the public transport is pretty decent there and you can get to the majority of places by bus or train (that’s how I travel too). If you are short on time and would like to see more attractions in a day then tours are your best options – there are plenty of them to choose from and they are a good value for money. If you decide to use public transport you can check bus connections here and trains here . If you travel over weekends or public holidays you are lucky as tickets are crazy cheap then (like 2,50€ from Ljubljana to Bled). Best day trips from Ljubljana

And now, without any further ado, here are the best Ljubljana day trips, with info on how to get there and the best tour options.

Lake Bled is probably the most popular day trip from Ljubljana and one of the best places to visit in Slovenia. It is very popular among tourists and it gets the hype for a reason. The picturesquely located lake, with the small island in the middle (where you can find the characteristic church), is one of the most known views in Slovenia but Lake Bled actually has more to offer (although taking the boat the island is one of the best things to do in Bled ).

You can walk around the lake and enjoy the beautiful scenery (the whole circuit is around 5 km) or hike to the viewpoint above the lake to see the most beautiful panorama of Lake Bled and surrounding mountains. Bled Castle, the oldest one in Slovenia (dating back to the early 11th century) is another must-visit place in Bled.

Don’t leave Bled without trying the traditional cream cake, invented in 1953 by a local confectioner. While you can get it in many cafes and restaurants around the lake, the best place to have it is in Cafe Belvedere which offers a spectacular view of Lake Bled and especially the island. The cafe, designed by the most famous Slovenian architect Joze Plecnik, is located near Vila Bled, one of the former holiday houses of the leader of Yugoslavia – Tito.

Vintgar Gorge

Located only some 5 kms away from Bled, Vintgar Gorge is among the best natural attractions in Slovenia. The trail through the narrow gorge along the crystal-clear Radovna river goes for some 1,5 km offering beautiful scenery like from a fairy tale. It is a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of the city as you are surrounded by nature only (and other visitors since it’s a rather popular place).

Along the way, you will cross a few bridges above the river, in some places the path is literally glued to the rocks which makes the whole experience kind of thrilling. At the end of the trail, you will find the old railway bridge (still in use) from 1906 and the Sum Waterfall.

Once you are done with the gorge, you need to get back to the starting point – there are different routes of varying length and difficulty to take you there. Exploring Vintgar Gorge should take you around 2 hours, you can combine visiting the place with Lake Bled.

Lake Bohinj

While the majority of people who visit Slovenia go to Lake Bled, there is an even more spectacular place located not too much further away that you can also get directly by bus from Ljubljana. Lake Bohinj is one of the most stunning places to visit in Slovenia, with crystal clear water and magnificent mountains surrounding it (or going directly to the lake on one side).

The main settlement on the lake is Ribcev Laz where you will find a picturesque small church on the lake shore and one of the favorite photo spots in the area – the ibex statue.

To fully appreciate the beauty of Lake Bohinj you can take the boat that will take you all the way across the lake to Ukanc from where you can take the cable car to Vogel mountain. Once on top you can go hiking in the area a bit or simply admire a breathtaking panorama of the Julian Alps, with Triglav (the highest peak in Slovenia) right in front of you.

Another place worth visiting near Lake Bohinj is a beautiful Savica waterfall – you need to walk up over 500 stairs to get there but it’s definitely worth the effort.

While many people combine the visit to Lake Bohinj with Lake Bled, I think this place deserves its own day trip from Ljubljana as there is so much to see and do there plus once you are done with the sightseeing you can simply relax at the lake and swim in the turquoise waters.

Kranjska Gora

Another place that is worth going for a day trip from Ljubljana is Kranjska Gora. Even if the town is known mostly as a winter destination and the most popular place for skiing in Slovenia, there is plenty to see and do all year long. Kranjska Gora is located on the other side of the Julian Alps from Lake Bled and the views you can admire there are, in my opinion, even better than in the most popular destination in Slovenia.

The most stunning place in Kranjska Gora is Lake Jasna which in fact are two artificial lakes, surrounded by mountains. You can wander around the lake or sit down in one of the bars or restaurants and enjoy the breathtaking views around. A few kilometers away from Kranjska Gora you will find Zelenci Nature Reserve, yet another stunning place offering spectacular views of the emerald green water and the majestic Alps in the background.

And a little bit further you can visit Planica ski center with the largest ski flying hill in the world, the place where world records in ski jumping are scored.

The small town of Radovljica is on the way from Ljubljana to the Alps yet not many tourists stop there. But the place is definitely worth a visit and you might even spend a few hours exploring all Radovljica has to offer.

The town dates back to medieval times and the architecture from that period is still well-preserved. Once you enter the Old Town you will feel like you traveled back in time.

The biggest attraction of Radovlijca is two great museums: of gingerbread and beekeeping. The second one is especially interesting since it’s among the best museums of that kind in Europe, showing the history and the whole process of honey production. Even if you think you are not interested in beekeeping you should still give this museum a chance, I bet you will be impressed (just like I was).

Located less than 30 km away from the capital, Kranj is one of the easiest day trips from Ljubljana, with frequent trains and buses connecting the cities.

The city was first mentioned in 1256 and over centuries it played an important role in the region. Today you can wander around the charming old town, visit the 14th-century St. Cantianus and Companions Parish Church (and go to the bell tower for the best views of the city and surroundings), visit the Kieselstein Castle, or explore the tunnels under the old town.

You can combine a day trip to Kranj with visiting Radovljica or Skofja Loka.

Skofja Loka

Skofja Loka is another picturesque town located not far from Ljubljana (25 km away) that is worth visiting. This is one of the oldest towns in Slovenia, first mentioned in 973, and is considered one of the best-preserved medieval towns in the region. Indeed, once you enter the Old Town it feels like time has stopped there.

Skofja Loka is really charming, with winding lanes and details that remind of the long history of the place. The castle towering above the town, originally from the 13th century, is home to the museum where you can learn more about Skofja Loka and the place from where you can admire nice views of the area.

Velika Planina

Velika Planina, the plateau settlement in Kamnik Alps, is located some 35 km away from Ljubljana and I believe this is one of the most underrated places to visit in Slovenia.

Getting all the way to the plateau is a bit challenging but worth all the effort. From the parking lot in Kamniška Bistrica, you need to take the cable car and then switch to the chair lift. Once on top, you are free to explore the area and admire spectacular views of the surrounding mountains.

The main attraction of Velika Planina is the picturesque herders’ dwellings settlement, one of the largest in Europe. There used to be 140 cottages on the plateau (now less), all of them built in a traditional way and a similar style. On top of one of the hills, there is a small Chapel of Our Lady of the Snows, originally designed in 1939 by the famous Slovenian architect Jože Plečnik.

The cattle pasture season in Velika Planina takes place between June and September, that’s also when you can see shepherds at work, try traditional food (or see how it’s prepared), and visit the huts. But even if you are there outside of the season, you are still in for a treat as this place is simply mindblowing.

Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle

Of over 11 thousand caves in Slovenia, Postojna is the most famous and most frequently visited one. It is the second biggest cave in the world, with over 25 km of underground passages (although you won’t see all of them during your visit), and a major tourist attraction since the 19th century.

The electric train will take you some 4 km inside of the cave where you will start the sightseeing. You will spend around 1,5 hours underground and the temperature there is around 10C so better take some warm clothes with you.

The walking path to explore Postojna Cave is almost 2 km long and you will be surrounded by the spectacular scenery around you, with each hall different than the others. This is a really jaw-dropping place and no words can describe the beauty of the cave.

Once you are done visiting Postojna Cave, go to the Predjama Castle, only 10 km away. What makes it special is the unique structure since the castle is partially built into the cave. It dates back to the 13th century and impresses still today.

Celje, the fourth largest city in Slovenia, located halfway between Ljubljana and Maribor, is often overlooked by tourists even if it offers plenty of attractions.

The biggest one is definitely Celje castle, towering above the area. It dates back to the 14th century and in the past was the seat of the Counts of Celje. It’s worth visiting the castle, especially for the beautiful views of Celje and its surroundings and to learn more about interesting legends connected with the place.

The Old Town of Celje is small but really charming, with the architecture from Austria-Hungary times, typical for Central Europe. Don’t miss the local museum focusing on the recent history of the city with a very interesting exhibition.

Maribor, the second-largest city in Slovenia, isn’t as popular among tourists as other destinations in the country but still offers numerous attractions that will keep you busy for a few solid hours. The city dates back to the 12th century and due to its location on the Drava river it’s always been an important trade center.

The center of Maribor is rather compact but really picturesque with winding lanes and beautiful Habsburg architecture. The riverside and its Lent district is the oldest part of Maribor where, among old remnants, you will also find numerous bars and restaurants and the oldest grapevine in the world that has been growing for over 400 years.

Since Maribor and the surrounding region are important wine areas you should try local wines or even visit one of the vineyards that are literally a walk away from the center. But the best thing about Maribor is its laid-back vibe of Central Europe at its finest.

Skocjan Caves

Even if Postojna Cave is the most popular cave in Slovenia, Skocjan Caves located a bit further toward the Adriatic Sea are even more spectacular (at least in my opinion). The place is known especially for one of the largest underground river canyons in the world but the rest of Skocjan Caves offers even more attractions.

You can go for a tour into the caves but it is possible to do so only with a guide (and taking pictures inside is forbidden but it’s not so bad since you can solemnly focus on the place). The first part of the tour goes through the most spectacular part of the caves and you will be walking around with your jaw-dropped. This place is simply mind-blowing and the grandness of the place takes your breath away. The most exciting part of the tour was crossing the underground bridge hung some 50 meters above the Reka river.

This part of the tour takes around 1,5 hours and you will cover 2,5 km (including 400 stairs). Once you are done with the underground part of the tour you can explore the area on your own – there are a few designated routes to choose from, with different levels of difficulty and time needed.

Don’t also miss the viewpoint in the upper part, not far from the visitors’ center – it will give you a great overview of the area. Skocjan Caves were granted the title of the UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986.

The seaside

The Slovenian coast is rather small, with only 47 km of coastline on the Adriatic Sea, but it’s definitely scenic and worth seeing.

The most beautiful town is Piran, nestled on the small peninsula. The place was under Venetian rule between the 13th and 18th centuries hence you can feel the distinctive Italian vibe there (and find numerous remnants from that time in the details around). Piran offers plenty of attractions, mostly around the picturesque Old Town and City Walls, and you will need a few hours to see them all.

Not far from Piran you can visit local salt pans and, a bit further towards Isola, impressive white cliffs. Koper, the main town of the seaside, is often overlooked by tourists for its industrial look but it also has a charming Old Town that hides numerous gems – a testimony to its long history of the place.

On the way to the seaside, shortly before Koper, you should visit the 16th-century walled church in Hrastovlje with the unique wall painting of “Danse Macabre” (Dance of Death).

If you are looking for a more active day trip from Ljubljana, with a real adrenaline rush, head to Bovec. The town is located in the Julian Alps and is known as the Slovenian capital of adventure.

You can try all sorts of adrenaline-based activities here: rafting, canyoning, rock climbing, or zip line, just to name a few. Just like everywhere else in the Slovenian Alps, you can also go hiking and admire here some really spectacular views, including the crystal-clear waters of the Soca river (which is so emerald here it looks like it’s photoshopped).

Vipava Valley

Vipava Valley is one of the most popular and best wine regions in Slovenia, located only around 1-hour drive from Ljubljana. If you are a wine connoisseur you should definitely include it in your Slovenia itinerary.

Due to the microclimate, the fruits grow here much better and as a result, you can enjoy amazing wines and preserves. There are numerous family-owned wineries in the region that you can visit and learn more about the local produce.

Vipava Valley is very scenic and kind of idyllic, making it a perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city, to rest and enjoy the surrounding nature and views. One of the best ways to explore the area is by bike.

You can combine visiting Vipava Valley with another wine region in Slovenia, located a bit further away – the Brda region.

Zagreb, the capital and the largest city in Croatia, is only 150 km away from Ljubljana, making it a perfect destination for a day trip. Even if the majority of tourists focus on more popular, seaside places to visit in Croatia , Zagreb is a wonderful city that shouldn’t be missed.

The capital of Croatia can be enchanting with beautiful and impressive architecture, great museums, a vibrant atmosphere, and some really cool alternative spots. Even if there are many amazing things to do in Zagreb , you can easily cover the basics in one day as the majority of attractions are centrally located, not too far from each other.

One of the must-visit places in Zagreb is the quirky and unique Museum of Broken Relationships, the only institution of that kind where regular people from all over the world donated random artifacts that tell the story of their broken relationships. You can get to the museum by the funicular, one of the shortest in the world where the ride takes exactly 64 seconds.

But the best thing to do in Zagreb is to just wander around and enjoy the wonderful atmosphere of the city.

Located literally right at the border with Slovenia, Trieste is one of the most important cities in northern Italy with a long and rich history dating back to ancient times. However, for centuries the city was under Austrian rule and this influence shaped Trieste which you can still see and feel today. The place became part of Italy only in the 20th century and the multicultural past is clearly visible in the architecture, vibe, and even the local dialect.

Trieste is also a really beautiful city with numerous attractions, such as Castello di San Giusto (the best place to admire the panorama of Trieste and beyond), stunning Piazza Unità d’Italia (the heart of the city) or the waterfront. The center of Trieste is really compact so you can easily see all the main sights.

After the sightseeing sit down in one of the many historical cafes that Trieste is known for.

When reaching or leaving Trieste, be sure to also stop at the beautiful 19th-century Miramare Castle or the impressive Grotta Gigante cave, both located just outside of the city.

Lake Bled near Triglav National Park and the Juliana Alps is becoming one of the most popular destinations to visit in Slovenia. That’s why day trips from Ljubljana to Lake Bled are becoming more and more common. 

If you’re spending a few days in the capital of Slovenia and want to see some of Slovenia’s magical nature, beautiful lakes, castles, and a whole lot more, a day trip to Lake Bled is a must! You can easily spend multiple days exploring both Bled and Bohinj. But it’s also easy to go from Ljubljana to Lake Bled as a day trip. 

There are plenty of different ways to get from Ljubljana to Lake Bled and public transport runs super often. Guided tours are also a very common way to see Lake Bled.

If you’re spending a few days in Ljubljana and you’re looking for an easy way to explore Lake Bled for a day then a guided trip to the area is the best way to go!

When it comes to guided day trips to Lake Bled it’s going to be more expensive than doing it yourself but you don’t have to plan anything or do anything other than just showing up. You’ll get picked up in Ljubljana and dropped off at all the stops around Bled. It’s a super easy way to see the lake, especially if you only have one day. 

There are quite a few companies that offer similar tours and all of them have something unique to offer. It can get a little overwhelming to research all the different options, so we’ve done the work for you…

In this post, we have highlighted three guided day trips from Ljubljana to Lake Bled. All of them feature a similar itinerary. You’ll see most of the iconic spots around Lake Bled but each different tour will also offer something unique!

#1 Ljubljana: Slovenia Day Tour to Bled, Postojna, and Predjama

On this trip, you get the chance to discover three of Slovenia’s top attractions all in one day. You’ll get to experience the stunning Lake Bled. Hop on a traditional ‘pletna’ boat to explore the picturesque Bled Island.

Then you’ll hike up a fairly steep path up to Bled Castle and soak up the fantastic views overlooking the lake. After that, you’ll journey to the cliffside Predjama Castle, and explore the beautiful renaissance architecture of the historical fortress. 

Finally, take a mini-train into the mysterious Postojna Cave and take in the incredible natural cave formations.

This guided tour from Ljubljana is a fun way to really see a lot of different Lake Bled highlights. You can easily spend multiple days in Lake Bled. But at least this way you’ll get a taste of a few of the highlights!

#2 From Ljubljana: Lake Bled and Bohinj Trip

Similar to the first tour, on this one you’ll stop by and visit the beautiful Lake Bled in the Julian Alps. You will wander by the lake and take in the views of the mountains. You’ll also get to see Bled Island which is located in the middle of the lake. Finally you’ll explore the medieval castle that is on top of a cliff overlooking Lake Bled.

Then you’ll make your way through the valley of Triglav National Park. Where you’ll discover our favourite place in Slovenia: Lake Bohinj. It’s a lot less crowded and touristy than Lake Bled. It also offers a bunch of amazing hikes like Mostnica Gorge and Savica Waterfall. 

This day trip from Ljubljana actually finishes off with a short hike up to Savica Waterfall. It’s one of the best viewpoints in the Bohinj area. You’ll also get the chance to try some local food in Bohinj before making the journey back through the valley and back to Ljubljana.

#3 From Ljubljana: Day trip to Lake Bled and Vintgar Gorge

This is another easy-to-follow tour through the breathtaking landscapes of Slovenia! The adventure begins with a comfortable ride from Ljubljana to the beautiful resort town of Bled, located in the Julian Alps.

Here, we’ll journey up to the castle located on top of a cliff above Lake Bled. From the castle’s terraces, you’ll get breathtaking views of the lake and its tiny island. Then, you’ll board a traditional boat and sail across to the only true island in Slovenia (and it’s surprisingly very small).

If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also walk along the wooden planks that make the viewpoint overlooking Vintgar Gorge and the River Radovna running through the canyon and ending at the beautiful Šum Waterfall.

After a delicious lunch at a typical Alpine restaurant, you’ll head to the glacial lake at Bohinj in Triglav National Park. Here, you can cool off with a swim or explore the lake by foot or canoe. 

Finally, this day trip from Ljubljana finishes with a visit to the well-preserved town of Skofja Loka . In Skofja Loka you can wander around the medieval town center, which is overlooked by a historic castle and monastery.

Do-it-yourself day trip from Ljubljana to Lake Bled 

Are guided tours not your thing but still want to explore the beautiful Lake Bled? Whether you prefer taking public transportation, renting a car, or driving your own, we’ve got a fun itinerary to keep you busy for a full day.

The best part is that it’s actually quite easy to get from Ljubljana to Lake Bled by public transport. Especially during the busy months of the year (spring through fall) buses and trains run almost all day.  You can read more about the different ways to get from Ljubljana to Lake Bled here .

Arriving at Lake Bled

Once you arrive at Lake Bled you’ll be blown away by this incredible lake that has put Slovenia on the map of places to travel to. You’ll quickly notice the little island in the middle of Lake Bled which is known as Bled Island . This island is one of the reasons why Lake Bled has become so famous because it’s very unique!

There’s a good chance you’ve seen a picture of the famous Church of the Mother of God on the Lake before. Actually, later in this post, we have a little surprise and hike recommendation for you to do that offers the best views of Lake Bled and Bled Island.

Hike up to Velika Osojnica Viewpoint overlooking Lake Bled

Assuming you take the bus, we recommend you get off at the ‘Bohinjska Bela’ bus stop, not ‘Lake Bled’. It’s an extra 7 minutes by bus and two stops past the Lake Bled bus stop. There’s also free parking in the village if you go by car.

From there you can hike up to the Velika Osojnica Viewpoint overlooking Lake Bled. This hike was probably the highlight of our trip to this beautiful spot in Slovenia. Partially because this hike feels a lot more local and less touristy than the rest of the area, and partially because of the incredible views.

The reason we recommend getting off at the Bohinjska Bela bus stop is so you can do the hike from the back side where most tourists don’t go . You can read all about the Osojnica Viewpoint hike here.  

The hike takes you through a village, up through the forest, and then – out of nowhere – this incredible viewpoint overlooking Lake Bled and Bled Island comes into view. The best part is that we had the whole viewpoint to ourselves – probably because a lot of people either only go to Mala Osojnica Viewpoint or Ostrica Viewpoint.

But it’s worth going all the way to the Velika Osojnica Viewpoint because that’s where you truly get the best view of Bled and Bled Island.

After you take in the view, instead of doing the hike like we did and going back to the start you can actually continue down towards Lake Bled. You’ll end up coming down right at the foot of Lake Bled!

Try the local Lake Bled Cream Cake 

Once you get down from Velika Osojnica on the Lake Bled side, you’ll find a beautiful area of the lake where you can swim, relax, and sun tan. Next to the lake, there’s Restavracija Camping Bled where you can sit down and grab a bite to eat. 

They do everything from pizza and burgers to risotto and soup. Because of its location, this restaurant can get quite busy but it’s worth stopping by to at least try the “famous” Lake Bled cream cake . A little taste of heaven made by crust, custard, and cream is the best way to describe this cake. It is local to the area so it’s good to try when in Bled. It also goes well with a cup of coffee or tea. 

You can grab the cake and enjoy it on one of the picnic tables outside of the restaurant if the weather is good. There you’ll also get a great view of the lake! 

Go for a swim and relax by Velika Zaka beach at Lake Bled

Since time is limited it’s worth enjoying the west side of Lake Bled while you’re over here. Right next to the restaurant, there’s a nice little sandy beach (that does get busy) where you can suntan and even swim around in a blocked-off area in the lake.

On a warm sunny day, it’s so nice to chill and relax at Velika Zaka Beach. It’s a beautiful spot with a view of Bled Island and all of the Julian Alps behind Lake Bled. It’s a nice little stop on this do-it-yourself Lake Bled day trip!

Lake Bled boat trip to Bled Island

Right next to the beach, you can see a little boat rental right on Lake Bled . For €20 you can rent a boat or paddle board for an hour and row to Bled Island and back. You truly don’t need more than an hour to row to Bled Island, walk around the tiny little island, and go see Church of the Mother on God Lake. 

Then you can paddle your way back to the boat rental all in under an hour. You can easily rent a boat or paddle board for longer but with only the day to see everything around Lake Bled an hour should be plenty of time to enjoy the lake, get pictures, and see Bled Island!

Walk back around Lake Bled and grab some food

After hiking Velika Osojnica, trying some Lake Bled Cream Cake, relaxing by the beach, and visiting Bled Island it’s time to make your way to the touristy side of the lake. 

You can walk around the lake in either direction. We recommend going along the south side of the lake so you can stop at Restavracija Sova Bled . That’s where you can get a delicious Slovenian meal. It’s a little fancier and more expensive food but the view and the quality of the food are worth it. 

Another option (that’s only about 100 meters up the road) if you’re looking for something a little cheaper and very traditional, you can stop by Monika Poklukar . A cozy little local restaurant serving up all sorts of traditional dishes.

If you’re not hungry you can just enjoy the views and walk around the lake and take in all the views. There are plenty of restaurants on the main side of the lake where you can grab a bite to eat later.

Stop by the Heart of Lake Bled

Once you’ve finally made it back around the lake to the busier side of Lake Bled there’s one little stop on the lake that’s worth visiting. Right at the front of the lake, there’s a big red heart that’s facing the lake. It’s a really pretty viewpoint and a good spot to take a picture of Lake Bled.

It’s hard to say how busy it’s going to be since it is right in the heart (😉) of where most tourists and travellers go. If you’re lucky and can grab a picture without waiting too long then it’s worth it! 

Hike up to Bled Castle and enjoy the views

One of the last things to do on this day trip to Lake Bled is to visit Bled Castle up on the cliffs above the Lake. It’s probably the most touristy part of Lake Bled and for good reason, because it’s absolutely stunning.

You can follow this trail map from the Lake Bled Heart Viewpoint up to Bled Castle . It’s less than a 1 km walk up and shouldn’t take more than 25-30 minutes.

Once you’re up at Bled Castle you can either hang out and enjoy the views or you can buy a ticket to enter the castle.  You can learn more about Bled Castle here and even buy tickets online beforehand (€13 per adult).

As we mentioned before, it’s probably the most touristy area in Lake Bled but for good reason. That’s why we recommend going later in the day like this. The other option is to also go early in the morning before most people arrive but since we recommend the Velika Osojnica hike as the first thing we suggest you finish the day at Bled Castle.

And that’s it for this day trip! Once you’re done admiring the castle you can make your way back down and then either go for dinner or head straight back to Ljubljana.

Quick overview of a day trip from Ljubljana to Lake Bled

The do-it-yourself day trip to Lake Bled can be a little overwhelming since there’s so much to do and see. But if you follow this itinerary, we’re sure you’ll have a great time!

As we mentioned earlier, public transport runs from the early hours of the morning until late at night during the busier months (spring through fall). If you have a car then even better because then you are completely in charge of your own schedule.

To summarize and simplify, here’s our suggested itinerary for a day trip from Ljubljana to Lake Bled:

• Drive or take a bus from Ljubljana to Lake Bled. If you take the bus remember to get off at Bohinjska Bela bus stop (2 stops/7 minutes past the normal Lake Bled stop).
• From Bohinjska Bela, hike up to Velika Osojnica and take in the view of Lake Bled and Bled Lake. From the viewpoint, you can hike down towards the lake.
• Enjoy a taste of Bled at Restavracija Camping Bled where you can try the Lake Bled Cream Cake
• Relax, swim, and suntan at the beach next to the restaurant.
• Take a boat or a paddleboard out to Bled Island and see the Church of the Mother of God on the Lake . 
• Then walk around Lake Bled back to town where you can stop at a restaurant for a bite to eat. Restavracija Sova Bled and Monika Poklukar are both on the way back to town as you walk around the lake.
• Check out the Lake Bled Heart Viewpoint and snap a picture at this iconic spot.
• Hike up to Bled Castle where you can roam the castle grounds and take in the views or actually enter the castle and explore the historic castle.
• Grab a bite to eat in Bled before you make your way back to Ljubljana by car, bus, or train and finish off the day trip from Ljubljana to Lake Bled! 

When you break it down like this it’s really easy to follow and you truly get to see everything around Lake Bled. 

Other related questions about a day trip from Ljubljana to Lake Bled

Is it best to go on a guided tour to lake bled or to do it yourself.

The main difference between doing the day trip yourself and going on a guided tour is that if you go on your own, you’ll have more flexibility and more of a local experience. On the other hand, if you go on a guided tour, all the planning is done for you. You will see all the popular spots but you will also get to see more on a guided tour and go to some other spots that you can’t do with public transport in just one day. 

There are pros and cons to both ways of visiting Lake Bled and it’s just up to you to see which way you prefer! Hopefully, this guide helps planning your day if you end up doing Lake Bled by public transport and enjoying it by yourself or with a few friends!

When is the best time to visit Lake Bled?

Since Lake Bled is a very outdoorsy destination and because of the weather, we would say that between May-October is the best time to visit.

May and October are going to be a lot less touristy but the weather can be more unpredictable during those months. We had a week full of rain in early October but during some years, October can be super nice and sunny. 

July and August are of course fantastic months to visit Lake Bled because they are the warmest months. This does mean more tourists and longer wait times, though. With the day trips from Ljubljana to Lake Bled in this post, you have a few activities that should help you avoid some of the crowds and then a few highlights that will be a bit busier with people – so a good mix of busy and less-busy activities. 

Honestly, anytime between May and October, we’re sure you’ll have a wonderful time hiking around and exploring all the iconic spots near Lake Bled.

Is a day trip from Ljubljana to Lake Bled worth it?

If you love the outdoors, want to hike a little bit, and see one of Slovenia’s wonders then a day trip from Ljubljana to Lake Bled is totally worth it. The fact that you can get from Ljubljana to Lake Bled in less than an hour also makes it a super convenient day trip. 

There is so much to do and see, and some amazing hikes around Lake Bled that your trip will be filled with viewpoints and fun activities around the lake including a visit to the famous Bled Castle. 

If you have a full day to explore somewhere outside of Ljubljana then Lake Bled should be at the top of that list!

Is Lake Bled touristy?

Lake Bled is very touristy. It is one of the most popular places to visit in Slovenia with over 1 million overnight stays a year. Thankfully there are few places you can go to avoid crowds at times, and if you travel during the shoulder season (April through June and September through October) you’ll get a lot fewer people than if you travel during peak season (the summer months). 

What currency do they use in Slovenia?

Slovenia is part of the European Union and uses Euro (€). Most places accept bank cards in Slovenia now but it’s still good to have at least a little bit of Euro cash with you in case you stumble upon some small shop or cafe that may not take bank cards.

The cheapest and most convenient way to get from Ljubljana to Lake Bled is by bus. It takes roughly 1.5 hours to get from Ljubljana Bus Station to the lake in Bled. Buses during peak season run from 5 am until 11 pm and tickets cost anywhere between €6-8 each way. 

There are buses that run all day so you can just show up at the bus station, buy a ticket there or online, and jump on the bus.

Is Lake Bled safe?

Slovenia and Lake Bled are very safe in general. The only thing you should worry about is getting lost on a hike, getting a sunburn or maybe dropping your phone in the lake. All in all Lake Bled is very very safe and there’s nothing you should worry about.

Of course, you should always use common sense but, in general, Lake Bled is very safe.

It’s easy to be entranced by Ljubljana. The Slovenian capital is tiny, but it’s renowned for its gorgeous cobblestone streets, charming river views, charismatic street art and castle looming over every city view. The little capital also makes for a great base to visit the nearby region. Here’s your ultimate guide to the best day trips from Ljubljana …

As it’s the nation’s capital, most tourists to Slovenia base in Ljubljana. It’s a tiny country, so it’s easy to explore anywhere in Slovenia on day trips from the capital. While visiting the capital city itself, be sure to check out our guide to spending one day in Ljubljana .

Whether you want to explore other cities and towns, hike in rolling hills, see views of the Julian Alps or bask on the shores of the legendary Lake Bled, there’s so much to see in Slovenia – and here’s how to visit the highlights as day trips from Ljubljana!

How to get around Slovenia

Slovenia is one of the only Balkan countries with rail routes, and destinations like Bled and Maribor are connected by train. However, the bus routes can often be quicker.

You may also want to consider renting a car. Check car rental comparison prices here. Many of these day trip destinations – particularly the more nature-based ones – are difficult to get to with public transport. Fuel and car rental prices have risen, like most places in the world, but if you’re travelling in a group you may find it economical. 

Another option is to partake in a guided tour. Many operators work in Ljubljana and offer tours to destinations all over the country, including many of the more difficult-to-access places. Best Day Trips from Ljubljana

Without a doubt one of the most popular destinations in Slovenia, Lake Bled is a glassy blue body of water with an island and the Church of Mary the Queen in the middle, surrounded by looming mountains. In the cooler months, these mountains will either be snow-capped or covered in ice!

Most attractions revolve around the lake and involve being outdoors, so try to time your Lake Bled day trip for a clear, sunny day.

You can hire boats and row to the island, admiring the church, or take a hiking trail around the perimeter of the island. Also, don’t miss climbing up to Bled Castle! 

To reach Bled from Ljubljana, take a coach or train, both of which take around an hour and a half. If you’re driving, it’s just over an hour. Alternatively, if you want all the transportation details taken care of for you, then you can book a guided tour like this one.

Maribor is the second largest city in Slovenia, and although it’s not really a touristy destination, it’s well worth visiting to engage in local life. Plus, there’s plenty to see, including an Old Town, historic Market Square and Maribor Castle, which is a Baroque mansion containing a regional museum. 

If you’re a fan of viticulture, it’s also worth visiting Vinag Wine Cellar, which is right in the city centre and is one of the best places in the country to sample traditional Slovenian wine. Slovenia is particularly known for white wines and there are a number of other places in the city to taste the local tipples.

Nearby, the Maribor vineyards lie close to the border with Austria. The rolling hills have been used for growing aromatic and noble white wine grapes for hundreds of years.

Visitors can even follow the Maribor wine route, the most famous part of which is where the road forms a heart shape amongst the vines.

Maribor is connected to the capital by rail, but they are quite slow (around 3 hours) and infrequent. The bus is quicker, taking just 2 hours. Alternatively, if you want to see Maribor, as well as the surrounding vineyards, then you can book this visit to Maribor, Ptuj & Heart of the Vineyards.

Slovenia doesn’t have much of a coastline, as there is less than 46km between Italy and Croatia. However, this means that the beach town of Piran is much quieter than its counterparts in Croatia (like Pula and Zadar) yet it’s just as charming. 

This beautiful beachy town has an incredibly laid-back vibe – you’ll probably want to spend days soaking in its atmosphere! Thanks to its small and compact size, you can easily see all of Piran’s highlights in a day, making it one of the best day trips from Ljubljana.

Explore the historic town centre, complete with town walls, and take in gorgeous views at the marina. You’re by the coast, so the seafood is incredible here too, and there are plenty of oceanfront restaurants to enjoy. Or, if you just fancy relaxing beachside all day, that’s perfectly possible in Piran too. 

It’s a bit of a complicated route to reach Piran from Ljubljana by public transport, so most tourists opt to drive, which is just over an hour.

Kamnik is one of the easiest day trips from Ljubljana, being just a half-hour drive from the centre. Famous for its arboretums, Kamnik has gorgeous gardens to stroll around and learn about botany. 

The most popular of these is perhaps Arboretum Volčji Potok which spans 180 acres and is renowned for flower shows and gorgeous walks. 

In the town, explore churches and castles, or spend time at a spa. Kamnik has an excellent spa culture, and you can swim, soak or have treatments here! 

One of the most popular Ljubljana day trips is to visit Predjama Castle and Postojna Cave. Predjama Castle is an 800-year-old fortress that was constructed around a base of natural caves – making it the largest cave castle in the world. 

Postojna Cave, on the other hand, is one of the most entrancing caves in the world. A tourist train takes you through the caves, giving you the chance to admire karst stones and towering stalagmites. 

You can see these attractions by public transport, but you’ll need to take a bus to Postojna and then travel by train from there.

If you want to avoid the crowds or visit somewhere a little alternative, look no further than Lake Bohinj, which is somewhat of a hidden gem when it comes to excursions from Ljubljana. Situated in the Triglav National Park, there’s plenty to do at this lake.

Enjoy attractions like the waterfall of Slap Savica and the Church of St. John the Baptist, all the while taking in the most gorgeous lakeside views. If you have a car, you can actually visit Lake Bohinj and Lake Bled in a one day trip!

If you don’t have a car, then it’s a 2 hour bus ride from the capital to reach Lake Bohinj. As with many other day trips from Ljubljana, it’s also possible to book a Lake Bled and Bohinj Trip with Vintgar Gorge like this one.

Vipava Valley is the prime winemaking region in Slovenia, and it’s well worth doing as a Ljubljana day trip. Panoramic views of the valley, which you can enjoy from virtually every vantage point, are beautifully scenic, with endless vineyards dotted with rustic cottages.

It’s a beautiful area for hiking, but you can also take in some of Slovenia’s wonderful vineyards while you’re here. It’s best to visit by driving or – if nobody wants to be the designated driver – an organised day trip. VERNIER, Switzerland (AP) — Carlos Rodriguez protected his yellow jersey through a rain-soaked final stage Sunday to win the six-day Tour of Romandie for the biggest race victory of his career.

Four previous winners in the French-speaking region of Switzerland went on to win that season’s Tour de France, including Chris Froome in 2013. Rodriguez placed fifth in cycling’s marquee event last year and won a stage.

Rodriguez started Sunday’s flat stage that looped round the suburbs of Geneva — won in a sprint finish by Dorian Godon — with a seven-second lead he took by placing third in a mountain stage Saturday.

The 23-year-old Ineos Grenadiers rider kept that winning margin over runner-up Aleksandr Vlasov, the 2022 Romandie winner. Third-placed Florian Lipowitz was third, trailing Rodriquez by nine seconds.

Godon sealed his second stage win this week, edging Simone Consonni with Dion Smith third.

2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson leaderboard, scores: Reigning champion Jason Day three back of lead after Round 1

After a copious amount of rain delayed the beginning of the first round at TPC Craig Ranch for the 2024 edition of the CJ Cup Byron Nelson, scoring plummeted as players took advantage of soft conditions. 

Players who shot even 1 under found themselves well back of the lead with tons of ground to make up over the next three days. This is not unusual for this golf course, though the overnight rain surely made it play a bit easier than it otherwise would have.

Several golfers took full advantage of the 2-under scoring average, including Alex Noren, Jake Knapp, Taylor Pendrith and Round 1 leader Matt Wallace.

Let's take a closer look at the first round on Thursday.

1. Matt Wallace (-8)

The Englishman went out early and destroyed the golf course. Incredibly, he was not even top 40 in putting but still posted eight birdies on the day. The question, of course, is whether he can sustain the lead. Wallace does not have a top-15 finish anywhere in the world this year. 

Wallace said he's still learning about his game and how to play it at the highest level, noting that he watched the Masters and took away a lot in terms of his mindset. That's something he'll try to use over the next three rounds.

"So, watching some of the best players in the world, and what I'm seeing from a lot of them, especially the younger guys, younger than me -- I'm not too old, but younger than me -- they're so focused in their shot and not worrying about the outcome or what's out there," said Wallace.

"That's what I'm trying to do now. So this might be test number 158 of me with a different round of golf. But taking care my business and my swing is the most important part, and I'm able to do that at the moment because I'm in a good place."

Other contenders

T2. Taylor Pendrith, Alex Noren, Chesson Hadley, Jake Knapp, Davis Riley (-7) T7. Alex Smalley, Hayden Buckley, Kelly Kraft (-6) T14. Justin Lower, Keith Mitchell, Jason Day (-5)

Day is a massive name among the current contenders. As a major champion, as well as the reigning winner of this very tournament, he has to be considered one of the handful of favorites going into the next three days. His day started hot with three birdies in his first five holes and mostly continued on the second nine. His big mishap came at the par-5 5th hole (he started on the back nine on the course), where he made a bogey 6 on a hole that was averaging close to 4.5 shots on the day.

Still, he's in good position to win for the first time in just under a year. It was a victory I thought could propel him for the rest of 2023, but Day has just five top 20s since that win at this course last May (albeit all five of them at really good events, including a T2 at the Open Championship). 

Day said after his round that his approach play was better than it has been but that he has mixed feelings about having his coach, Chris Como, in town (Como lives in Dallas) because it can lead to obsessing over his swing from a technical standpoint. He noted that there are probably some other degenerates out there that can relate.

Can confirm: There are.

Spieth pops and then fades?

Jordan Spieth also birdied three of his first five and ran it all the way to 4 under through 13 holes before also making bogey at the par-5 5th hole. His 3-under 68 was decent and will have him in a good enough position going into the next 54 holes. Even more encouraging? The fact that he was solid from tee to green after a stretch of play that has, uh, not been so solid from tee to green.

"Started really nicely and then stalled," Spieth said. "You know, I snuck one on 4 but I thought I would maybe grab one on 3 and then [hole] five in. To play 1-over [on the last five holes] is kind of a bummer. You're looking to play those holes a couple under.

"It's a very gettable golf course," he continued. "Obviously very wet, but I just played the easy holes poorly; played the par-5s 1 over. That was kind of the story of the day. The par-5s you kind of need to be two-and-a-half-under out here each day. I'll have to make that back up."

This is a board that is somewhat untouchable for me, but if I had to make a pick here I kind of like Wallace at 16-1. That's a nice number for somebody with the outright lead who didn't do it all with the putter. I like that better than everybody else shorter than 25-1. Keith Mitchell is intriguing at 25-1, and Si Woo Kim is interesting at 35-1.

McKINNEY, Texas (AP) — Matt Wallace was relegated to watching the Masters amid a self-described “terrible” season when he found himself pondering what makes some of the best golfers in the world so good.

Asked if Scottie Scheffler was among the players he was watching, Wallace stumbled over his words just a bit.

“Well, him, but, I mean, so good that it’s difficult to take a lot from him because he’s playing unbelievable golf,” Wallace said. “It’s not as realistic for everyone else out there.”

Well, maybe Wallace can take advantage of the world No. 1 sitting out his hometown tournament awaiting the birth of his first child.

The one-time PGA TOUR winner shot an 8-under 63 for a one-shot lead over seven players in the first round of THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson on Thursday.

Taiga Semikawa, a 23-year-old from Japan playing on a sponsor exemption, settled for 64 after a three-putt par on the par-5 18th just before a rain-delayed round with preferred lies was suspended by darkness with nine players on the course.

Defending champion Jason Day was in a large group trailing by three after he and Jordan Spieth, the biggest local favorite with Scheffler absent, struggled down the stretch playing in the same threesome. Spieth was 3 under.

Brad Hopfinger, a 35-year-old making his PGA TOUR debut, was two shots behind Wallace along with Ben Kohles, Alex Smalley and Hayden Buckley.

Wallace, who has missed the cut five times and doesn’t have a top-10 finish in 11 tournaments this year, birdied five of the first six holes and capped his bogey-free, career-low round with a tap-in birdie on the 18th.

The 34-year-old Englishman has found himself taking mental notes about the likes of young Swede Ludvig Åberg, who played at Texas Tech but is among 27 of the top 30 players skipping THE CJ CUP with a $20 million signature event, the Wells Fargo Championship, and the PGA Championship coming the next two weeks.

“What I’m seeing from a lot of them, especially the younger guys, younger than me — I’m not too old, but younger than me — they’re so focused in their shot and not worrying about the outcome or what’s out there,” said Wallace, who won in the Dominican Republic a little more than a year ago.

Day and Spieth both stumbled with bogeys on the par-5 fifth hole, their 14th of the day. Day had two birdies and a bogey over the final four holes, including the par-5 ninth. Spieth could only par the finishing hole and was 1 over on the par 5s.

“It’s a very gettable golf course,” Spieth said. “I just played the easy holes poorly. That was kind of the story of the day.”

Spieth is still seeking his first victory in his 12th appearance at event in which he debuted by contending as a 16-year-old amateur in 2010. Day got his first PGA TOUR win when Spieth was making those headlines, then ended a five-year victory drought last year.

The 30-year-old Spieth missed last year’s CJ CUP because of a wrist injury. He was the runner-up in 2022.

“I’m not out of it, but certainly you want to stay within two or three of the lead as you get through the first couple rounds,” Spieth said. “Doesn’t look like we’re going to get a ton of wind or anything, so I am going to have to really make it up, because there will be a lot of guys shooting low scores.”

Playing on a sponsor exemption in the first year of THE CJ CUP carrying the name of the South Korean company CJ Group, Kim chipped in for eagle at No. 9 to finish an up-and-down round that included five birdies and four bogeys.

“First couple holes the nerves were definitely there, but as we got on, it was just playing golf,” said Kim, who went undefeated in the Junior Ryder Cup last year and is the first amateur sponsored by CJ Group.
