Clean, concise information given and great to

Having always wanted to see the Great Wall of China, Tiananmen Square, Terracotta Warriors & ride the Bullet Train, imagine our utter delight to find all these amazing things included in a Land tour of China plus a cruise on the Iglu website. We called and spoke to Paul, who went above and beyond to help us book this holiday of a life time as all our questions were answered and all queries checked. I would definitely recommend.

Brilliant service as usual

Dealing with Adam at Iglu was easy and straightforward. We wanted to change the detail of the package and he sorted out our requirements quickly and talked us through all our options. He was knowledgeable and helpful throughout. We’ve booked with Iglu a number of times and they have always been superb.

Choose IGLU FIRST

This is the second time we have booked our cruise with Iglu. Lauren was very professional and polite and answered all the questions I had asked. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this wonderful cruise company and it’s not No.1 for no reason. I did try other companies, but their website wasn’t as good, so don’t waste your time people using anyone else. When thinking about cruising go for IGLU FIRST. 👏👏🛳️

David was great.

David was great and gave us all the info we needed and made several suggestions. I didn't want to book immediately until I'd done some more research so he passed our details to a colleague to follow up the next day as it was his day off. Colleague phoned as promised and booking was made including some additions.

Jacob was very friendly and easy to talk to. He asked me what I was looking for and then gave me all the information I needed to know to allow me to make an informed choice. He was not pushy in any way and agreed to call me at a specific time the next day and he was spot on in his timing. I felt reassured and was happy to proceed with the booking. Everything was explained and easy to understand. A pleasure to deal with.

Seamless booking

I spent wasted time with a less than knowledgeable agent

I spent some time with the agent booking a separate cabin for my sister who is unable to walk far without wheelchair assistance. The agent told me he had booked one next to the lift lobby . When we boarded the ship we discovered she was about as far from the lift as possible!. We checked on the onboard deck plans to find that the lift he had promised us was a crew only service lift. Several other bits of incorrect info about our package certain ly hasn't impressed.

Glass igloo holidays

Bed down under a ceiling of stars as the Northern Lights backdrop your sleep – this is surely the most romantic of accommodations. Whether it’s the progressive social policies or the cutting edge of its design scene, Scandinavia has long led the way in terms of innovation. In fact, the Nordic countries all but dominated the United Nations’ 2017 Global Innovation Index, with Sweden second only to Switzerland. It’s a commitment that’s seemingly bled into each facet of everyday life, from the world’s smallest gender pay gaps to widespread environmental consciousness and, yes, those egg chairs.

It’s no surprise, then, that Scandinavia leads the way in terms of inventive accommodation too. Indeed, it won’t have escaped your attention that you can stay in snow hotels and art-installation treehouses that range from UFOs to bird nests. However, it’s perhaps the glass igloos that are most intriguing.

Combining an ancient architectural form with the best in modernist materials, they’ve become something of an icon for Nordic design. But, while they’re all glass-and-steel thrusts, an igloo stay is just as much about showcasing the natural world around you as it is indulging artsy sensibilities. Cloaked by the wintry beauty of Lapland’s wild remotes, it’s the skies that demand the most attention. From your very bed you’ll be treated to spectacular stargazing opportunities and, fingers crossed, the Northern Lights. And, with heated windows, you’ll be treated to perfectly unclouded views. Many even also feature a motorised bed so you can get the best angle.

The best glass igloo holidays

One of our absolute favourites is  Levin Iglut , located right in the wilds of Finnish Lapland. Perfectly poised among the fells and forests, its delightfully remote setting – far from any light pollution – is ideal for catching glimpses of the aurora borealis. You’ll even take your dinner in a giant glass tipi after spending your days exploring with snowmobiles and dogsledding. It's also a good spot for some skiing, with some of Finland's best slopes close at hand.

You might also choose to combine your glass igloo stay with another of Finnish Lapland’s accommodation icons at the Arctic SnowHotel & Glass Igloos . Here, underfloor-heated igloos make for a cosy contrast to a night spend on a bed of ice among the ethereally lit sculptures of one of Scandinavia’s finest ice hotels. Then, for an equally exciting pairing, Father Christmas himself will pay a visit to your igloo at Santa’s Hotel Aurora .

Arctic SnowHotel and Glass Igloo Holiday in Finland Lapland

Finland holidays in autumn

But, the fun isn’t just reserved for winter. It’s a little-known fact that the Northern Lights are at their most active over the autumn equinox. With the season combing stunning aurora displays and delightfully temperate weather, it’s ideal for forest hikes, lake cruises and a full range of adventure activities, from kayaking to foraging cooking lessons. It’s all showcased on our Levi Glass Igloo Autumn Break .

  • Iglu offers cruises all around the world, from the sunny Pacific to the icy Arctic. It can make narrowing down the options a bit overwhelming. Not sure where to start? Popular Iglu Cruise Destinations

Different types of cruises with iglu, cruise from the uk.

These cruises usually depart from Southampton, so all you have to worry about is getting there in time for check-in. The simplicity of this option means you don't have to deal with the stress of international airports, and can simply switch straight into holiday mode from the minute you board the ship. Often these cruises will explore less far-flung destinations - think Belgium, France or Guernsey. For cruises heading further afield, cruise-only options can mean more time spent at sea - but this won't be a problem if your ship has plenty to keep you entertained.

If a jam-packed itinerary is important to you, then a fly-cruise might be the best option. These deals include international return flights to the city your cruise will depart from - so instead of having to sail all the way to the Caribbean, for instance, you fly straight there to board the ship. If your dream cruise involves seeing as many sights as possible - with the ship merely acting as your base - then a fly-cruise might be your best bet.

Cruise and Stay

Can't decide if you should try a cruise, or park up on a sun-soaked beach somewhere? Why not both! Cruise-and-stays offer the best of both worlds, incorporating a period of cruising (often seven nights) with a few extra nights in a hotel tacked on before or after. This stay is a great way to ease into holiday mode after a stressful time at home, or embrace a change of pace following days spent at sea. Think a Mexican Riviera cruise followed by a glitzy Vegas stay, or a glamorous stint in Barcelona following a jaunt around the Canaries!

River Cruise

A great way to see European cities or parts of Asia, river cruises take you right to the heart of each destination. You could be soaking in a Budapest thermal bath, sipping wine in Lyon or visiting Vienna's dazzling opera house. With the vessels often much smaller in size than those which sail at sea, you'll experience a slightly more intimate atmosphere.

Spend the Night in a Floating Glass Igloo at Sea — Polar Landscape Views and Stellar Stargazing Included

Spend a night underneath the stars in a glass igloo dome, thanks to these epic cruise expeditions.

igloo holidays cruises

Dreams are coming true for those seeking a whole new way to experience an evening under the stars . The first-ever Polar Igloos at sea have officially set sail aboard two new, state-of-the-art Lindblad vessels, providing a cozy, temperature-controlled setting to stargaze like never before.

The National Geographic Endurance and National Geographic Resolution are both fully stabilized vessels of the highest ice class, allowing for unprecedented access to polar regions. Now, they're offering first-of-their-kind igloos on deck with panoramic views of spectacular polar landscapes and starry nighttime skies. These transparent structures are located at the top and back of the ship, which means they're tucked away in a secluded, peaceful space.

Each glass dome is completely clear, but protected from the chill and wind outside, so guests can soak in unspoiled vistas all while keeping safe and warm. It's an unparalleled opportunity to catch a glimpse of places rarely seen, and it's available each evening for passengers to reserve.

Initially, the igloos were designed as solarizing units for the adjacent infinity hot tubs, but thanks to the creative vision of Lindblad founder Sven Lindblad, who has been fascinated with Inuit ice architecture since he was a kid, these structures have since been transformed into a unique luxury amenity — a cabana-type option for spending the night.

During the day, the igloos are open to use, which is great for those seeking some weather protection or to lounge on the soft daybeds adorned with faux fur throws. But when the sun goes down, the igloos are available only with a reservation, so guests can have them all to themselves for the night.

Each evening, the igloos are transformed into a space made for enjoying a comfortable night's sleep. They house a two-person teak wood bed that's warmed by twin hot water bottles (in the traditional Scandinavian way) and appointed with cozy comforters. Guests will also enjoy plush robes and oversized fleece-lined capes that allow them to venture outside to enjoy the adjacent infinity hot tubs and smattering of stars above.

Customized lights inside the igloos illuminate the dark, giving guests the chance to create their own sort of northern lights ambience. And when the ship moves, the igloo rooms move with it, like a constantly changing, high-resolution documentary of the arctic in real-time.

The National Geographic Endurance offers more than a dozen itineraries to destinations such as Antarctica, Norway, Iceland, and Greenland, while the National Geographic Resolution offers nearly 30 itineraries to Iceland, coastal Japan, Norway, Patagonia, and European destinations like Barcelona and the Basque Country in Spain.

According to the Expedition Cruise Network, these types of excursions are the “ fastest growing ” market in the cruising world.

As competition gets fiercer, and more expedition ships are heading to the same destinations, cruise lines are looking for ways to stand out. In some cases, they look to green-tech innovations to entice sustainably minded guests. Take Norway’s HX, formerly Hurtigruten Expeditions, which launched the world’s first battery-hybrid cruise ship, the MS Roald Amundsen . In other cases, the way to stand out might be an acoustical, multi-sensory underwater lounge below the waterline, such as the Blue Eye lounge on French cruise ship operator Ponant’s Le Lapérouse .

I leveled up my recent trip to Greenland aboard Lindblad Expeditions’ National Geographic Endurance with its igloo experience, which entailed glamping in one of two igloos on the ship’s deck. These aren’t actual igloos built from compacted snow cubes; they’re geodesic glass igloos built on the port (left) and starboard (right) corners of the observation deck located toward the stern (back) of the ship. They run to the edge of the deck and provide unparalleled panoramic views.

Lindblad’s ships, like the National Geographic Endurance and its sister ship, the National Geographic Resolution , take guests on trips packed with outdoor adventures. You can sail to Antarctica, South Georgia, and the South Atlantic’s Falkland Islands; circumnavigate Iceland; explore Norway’s Svalbard archipelago, the Norwegian coastline, and the Faroe Islands; voyage to coastal Japan; or go farther south in Patagonia. Wherever you are, an overnight stay in one of the igloos offers a unique view of each of these landscapes.

What it’s like to spend the night in a ship’s igloo

lindblad-expeditions-igloo-experience

Photo: Brandon Withrow

I arrived just at sunset to find the igloo aglow in a mood-setting light show – a slow shift between soft purples, greens, and pinks that plays for guests when they arrive. That light show is intended to symbolize the aurora borealis, but it hardly compares to the view you get with a clear night sky, and in my case, the real northern lights that danced faintly in the distance.

There are no blinds on the igloo’s windows. On the entrance side, which faces the deck and an infinity-edged hot tub, the windows are private and frosted. On the other side, which sits at the edge of the ship deck and faces the water, the windows are clear. (Only the wildlife can see you there if you go au naturale.) Since the hot tub sits next to the igloo, it becomes a private space to soak and warm up after guests have retired to their rooms for the night.

lindblad-expeditions-igloo-experience

In the morning, I was greeted with a golden sunrise and the delivery of fresh coffee and a muffin from the ship’s hotel director, which you can schedule the night before. Eye masks are provided for those who don’t want to be awakened by the sunrise — though if you’re lucky enough to spend the night in an igloo at sea, there’s no better way to wake up than with the sun.

Being in polar regions, you might think that you’ll freeze in a room made of glass – one reason some guests cited when they tole me they decided not to stay in one of the igloos. I discovered that staying cozy isn’t an issue. Warming floors and two heated water bottles under the covers of the teak wood bed, fit for two, make for a very comfortable night’s stay. Though, like camping, the air in the room might feel a little crisp. This just depends on the itinerary you’ve chosen.

What to know about Lindblad’s igloo experience

lindblad-expeditions-igloo-experience

Photo: Courtesy of Lindblad Expeditions

Since there are no outlets in the igloos, Lindblad suggests that you to charge your phone and cameras ahead of time. What the igloos do have is a supply of robes and oversized, fleece-lined capes if you decide to step outside or need to run to the restroom, which is located a few steps away inside the main ship. WiFi is available throughout the ship.

One of the best things about the experience is that a night in the igloo is free. Guests can request to stay in an igloo on a first-come, first-served basis – so get your request in right away once you board. Rooms are available after dinner on the night of your stay. Igloo availability is also dependent on the weather. If the ship is passing through a storm or there’s zero visibility, the room might not be available that night. The goal is to make that one-night stay a memorable one.

What it’s like to take an expedition cruise to Greenland

lindblad-expeditions-igloo-experience

Greenland’s landscape feels almost mythical, with rolling treeless mountains, glacial flows, and icebergs dotting the waters. It’s hard to imagine a better way to see that magic than from an igloo. It’s not that Lindblad’s staterooms don’t come close – they do. My cabin had a semi-private balcony with chairs and table. You can also hang a hammock out on your balcony, stretch out under a blanket, and watch icebergs float by or hope to glimpse a breaching whale. Not all rooms have balconies, so be sure to choose a room on the right deck. Balcony cabins also include a sofa, coffee table, a desk with a chair, bedside tables, and closets with plenty of space.

There are many reasons to take an expedition cruise over a standard ocean cruise, especially when you’re headed to a destination like Greenland. Unlike mainstream ocean cruises with enough guests to populate small towns, expedition ships are usually small with only a couple hundred guests. They’re nimble adventures, eager to take you to remote landscapes that are only accessible by small ships that can manage tight fjords. They’ll take you hiking over post-glacial landscapes, kayaking near turquoise icebergs, and to small villages inaccessible to large ships.

CONCLUSION: IGLOOS IN NORWAY

To conclude, while it is apparent transparent tent igloo structures are much more commonly found here, there are a range of different accommodation types that will give you the ultimate panoramic view experience.

One of the only official glass igloos in Norway is Lyngen North . While there are a multitude of transparent domes to choose from, our recommended stay is the stunning Sørfjorden Eye Iglo .

There are also plenty of canvas style domes to choose from, the best of which for us has to be the One bedroom bungalow at the Aurora Borealis Observatory .

Likewise, if you wanted the panoramic views of an igloo but with maximum comfort and space, there are a few epic glass cabins and lodges to choose. For us, hands down the most jaw-dropping was the Æra Panorama Glass Lodge® , just outside of Tromsø.

Whichever option you end up choosing to suit your travel preference, location and budget – we have everything crossed for you that you get to witness Norway’s magical Aurora displays from these epic igloo style structures!

Saudi Arabia’s latest big idea? Sober cruise holidays

T he news that Saudi Arabia is launching its own luxury cruise line this winter offers an exciting prospect for travellers: the chance to see the Red Sea in style. But true to Saudi values, it will come with one firm condition: absolutely no booze allowed.

Whatever your personal drinking habits , it’s hardly unfair to say that many of us regard cruises as a chance to let our hair down. While measuring the intake of cruise-goers was never going to be a priority for the Office of National Statistics, industry analysts have had a stab at crunching the numbers: one poll claimed that a typical cruise-goer makes their way through 50 alcoholic drinks during a typical sailing.

While the industry has been happy to tempt us with all-inclusive deals, they have occasionally had to rein it in. Last month, P&O Cruises announced that it would be forbidding customers from bringing on board any beer or spirits (instead limiting them to one bottle of wine each). The company says it wants to see “responsible” drinking on its ships and will confiscate any contraband booze.

They may have their work cut out for them on that front – thanks to a popular TikTok trend promoting clever (and occasionally extravagant) ways to smuggle alcohol on board. Of course, the tips are intended for cruises which already offer alcohol, rather than ones that prohibit it entirely – which is to say they absolutely should not be tried in stricter countries like Saudi Arabia.

But is it time we all calmed down a bit on the booze anyway? Some cruise companies appear to have sensed an appetite for something calmer. Cruise provider Virgin Voyages now promotes itself as the best cruise line for non-drinkers, boasting a new menu of booze-free mocktails designed by expert mixologists (a full range of alcoholic options is also available).

“From what we see from our customers, there are definitely different approaches,” says Dave Mills, Chief Commercial Officer for cruise specialists Iglu Cruise. “People are more likely to opt for a drinks package on a Caribbean cruise, for example, than on a scenic voyage through the Alaskan glaciers.” On the other hand, he says, some old stereotypes remain true, with all-inclusive deals still associated with hedonism.

As for a fully sober cruise, the Saudis appear to have cornered the market – for now at least. Their provider, Aroya Cruises, will set sail from Jeddah for the first time this December heading to a pristine, private island off the Red Sea coast. Longer cruises in January will include excursions to Sokhna and Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt, as well as the Jordanian city of Aqaba .

As for the ship, guests will sail on an 18-deck, 335.2-metre vessel purchased by the Saudi sovereign wealth fund from Hong Kong-based Star Cruises for $300 million in 2023. Aroya and the Saudi money men are now reportedly looking to add two new-build ships to their fleet with the goal of welcoming some 1.3 million passengers by 2035.

While Westerners are welcome on board, Aroya has been clear that its main commercial mission is to tap into the lucrative Saudi and Gulf markets and is thus catering to Arabic tastes. We can probably assume, then, that Saudi Arabia isn’t looking to change the face of the global cruise industry. But could it change things in the Middle East?

It’s no secret that Saudi Arabia, the region’s largest economy, has been going through somewhat of a liberalisation in recent years – albeit from a modest starting point. But despite big strides on things like allowing women to drive and relaxing religious dress codes, some issues, most notably alcohol, remain highly taboo.

Indeed, when it was announced that Saudi Arabia was considering relaxing its alcohol ban for some of its new beach resorts, notably those connected to the futuristic NEOM megacity, it quickly made headlines. Yet a quick enquiry to the new luxury island hotel in the Red Sea, the Red Sea St. Regis, reveals there are no plans as yet. Like Aroya, the five-star resort appears to be catering to moneyed locals who have no expectations of enjoying a tipple.

Yet on the Saudi mainland, a gradual shift seems to be underway. In Riyadh, a specialist outlet has opened to sell alcohol to foreigners with diplomatic passes. While that may seem like small beans to anyone who doesn’t work at an embassy, it’s a huge shift by Saudi standards, setting the precedent for non-Muslim foreigners to be treated differently (i.e. like the old system in Dubai, before rules were relaxed for Muslims too).

In Jeddah, which I visited in January , five-star hotels now stock their lobby bars with the full spectrum of booze-free beers, mixers, and spirits (I particularly enjoyed the hangover-less whisky) served up in Parisian-style cocktail glasses and old-school tumblers. The aim, I suspect, is to serve as a sort of soft launch for the real thing, making the leap seem less drastic should the Saudis eventually change the law.

After all, it should be remembered that even the idea of a cruise holiday (at least one departing from the Kingdom with men and women on board) would have been considered an unlikely prospect until around ten years ago. Saudi revellers might not be knocking back the Chateau Lafite Rothschild, but they could prove a sizable force in the global cruise market, opening up further travel possibilities in the Middle East. And that is something we can all raise a glass to.
