The Ultimate Geek-Culture Guide in London

As a lover of British literature, I was really jazzed about uncovering London’s literary walks and points of interest when I first moved to the city five years ago. When most people think of this city, they imagine stoic and sophisticated Georgian homes, the grandeur of posh shops and upmarket restaurants but there are many diverse subcultures that you will find here! So I have compiled the ultimate London geek guide which lists the best points of interest for those wanting to explore the geek culture in London or just hoping to take in all the sights of the city in a day.

Forbidden Planet - Tottenham Court Road

Forbidden Planet - Tottenham Court Road

Forbidden Planet is the ultimate place for London geeks. If you are an ardent fan of cult films, TV series, science fiction, fantasy, and horror fiction you will lose yourself in this mega-store, which also happens to specialize in comic books, graphic novels, video games, board games, and collectible merchandise.

You can spend hours sifting through specialist merchandise or flipping through Dungeons and Dragons strategy books, letting the bustle of London fade into the background for a while.

Freud Museum - Hampstead

Freud Museum - Hampstead

If you are looking for nerdy things to do in London then definitely make a stop at the stately home that Freud and his family lived in after escaping Nazi annexation. Freud only lived in the house for a brief period before he died; however, his daughter Anna Freud continued to live and work there until 1982.

In 1986 the house was opened to the public, with Freud’s consulting room, study, and library all preserved exactly as he had them set up so you can examine his artifacts, ornaments, notes, and of course the famous couch that his clients laid on during their sessions.

The museum also features exhibitions, art installations, and a video room. Any London geek guide would be incomplete without this great pick, so make a point to visit the museum during your tour of London.

The Loading Bar - Dalston

The Loading Bar - Dalston

This pub-like local bar is ideal for gamers or groups of friends who want to unwind and explore some of the geeky things to do in London. The bar is set over two floors in a relaxed and friendly environment with scores of board games available upstairs, and plenty of big tables to gather around.

The downstairs basement is stocked with dozens of classic and up-to-date video game consuls, including Super Nintendo, Xbox, PlayStation, Sega, and more.

The bar serves a delicious selection of cocktails, craft beer, and wine and the best part is, as long as you’re ordering drinks and playing games, you can bring your own food into the bar or even have it delivered to you there! If you really want the full experience, then brush up on your lingo to fit into the rest of the London geeks.

London Transport Museum

London Transport Museum

Many tourists often overlook this absolute gem of a museum , which is especially great for children , families and all London geeks. The museum is dedicated to all aspects of transportation in the city, and is located right beside Covent Garden market, so it’s impossible to miss. The museum has many retired London buses and tube trains, including the first underground electric train from 1890.

Mega City Comics - Camden Town

Mega City Comics - Camden Town

The next stop in my London geek guide is Mega-City Comics. This is a community-minded comic book store with a fantastic selection, and the staff is super friendly and helpful.

They have a comprehensive collection of current and back issue comics, graphic novels, books, T-Shirts, and other merchandise so if you are looking for nerdy things to do in London, it is worth visiting this store.

Natural History Museum - South Kensington

Natural History Museum - South Kensington

The Natural History Museum is one of London’s most beautiful museums and a must for anyone exploring geek things to do in London.

With an impressive collection of over 80 million items on display, the museum specializes in botany, entomology, mineralogy, paleontology, and zoology.

It is also a world-class research center and has important pieces like specimens collected by Charles Darwin, dinosaur skeletons, and an extensive library.

CyberDog - Camden Town

CyberDog - Camden Town

CyberDog is a massive club wear store in Camden that specializes in designer cyber clothing and accessories for niche subcultures and is a hit among the London geeks. Many of the clothes feature electronic components such as flashlights, and they sell glow sticks, rave-wear and goa trance items.

From the moment you pass through the enormous front doors guarded by two giant and imposing statues sporting the futuristic style, the rave music blares and occasionally two go-go dancers are on platforms up in the roof, dancing in time with the music.

If you want to experience the weird and wonderful, then schedule a stop here in your London geek guide. A bonus is that this store is right on the threshold to the Stable Markets at Camden Town.

Walks around Bloomsbury

Walks around Bloomsbury

While exploring all the geeky things to do in London, take the tube to Russell Square or Goodge Street and explore one of city’s most culturally rich neighborhoods.

See the British Museum, the British Library, literary points of interest such as the many blue plaques indicating the homes of past novelists, artists and thinkers who lived there, the University of London campuses and Senate House Library.

Draughts Haggerston

Draughts Haggerston

Draughts is another board game bar, but it’s a bit swankier and more upmarket than The Loading Bar and features strongly in the geek culture of London. It’s also quite a bit smaller, and you have to pay an entry fee based on how many hours you want to spend inside.

The fee is well worth it though because the staff are all experts in gaming and will happily walk you through the hundreds of board games and suggest what to play based on your group’s interests.

They also have a great selection of craft beers too, so you’ll want to stay awhile before continuing to explore the many geeky things to do in London. If books and beer are your thing, then you can also check out several of London's literary pubs .

Sir John Soane Museum

Sir John Soane Museum

This museum is the former home of the neo-classical architect Sir John Soane and the last stop on my London geek guide. The beautiful house has been preserved exactly as it was at the time of Sir John Soane’s death.

From antiques to sculptures, architectural models to paintings by iconic artists like Turner, the museum is full of curiosities just waiting to be discovered.

See full price details.

GNT’s new Tourstarter tours not only allow you to help build the tour that you want to go on, but also puts money back in your pocket via profit sharing . As the tour grows – tour participants will enjoy a reduction in their fare. Of course, pricing is not fixed as we have yet to build the tour together, but based on past tours tour participants can expect a price reduction at 20 participants of $125.00 USD , at 25 participants that reduction increases to $200.00 USD and at a sell out of 30 tour participants expect a tour reduction of $250.00 USD .

Further, the tour pricing is based on past tour research. It may fluctuate while we build the tour but hopefully will remain close to the indicated rate.

Spread the word and help us put some money back into your pocket (or into your manga collection)…

About this TourStarter Tour

WE HAVE YET TO BUILD THIS TOUR! We are itching to get to it however, and thus have it listed as a Tourstarter project (see the Special Notice notes above and the “I’m Interested” notes to the right)… The dates have not been settled on nor have tour details been arranged. With that said, this tour is focused on the AnimeJapan! Convention and thus will centre around those dates. The details of most days could remain the same as below, but of course even these are open for adjustment if the Tourstarter crowd has a different vision.

Really that is Geek Nation Tours first question for all you possible TourStarter participants.  Are there any destinations in Tokyo (or Japan in general) that you feel should be included in the tour?

A) Should we include a day at Tokyo Disney?

B) On a similar note, should we not include the newly opened Ghibli Park and Super Nintendo World also?

C) Should we focus on going to real life anime locations like those listed in these sites? TokyoCreative , Mipon , Sugoii Japan , Voyagin … Steins:Gate in particular should be covered. It has many locations in Akihabara and we will be there anyway…

D) Or perhaps we should drive Go-Carts in Akihabara dressed as Mario Bros. characters…

E) Or maybe we need to go to the Museum of Yebisu Beer and a few more nights clubbing it in Roppongi

YOU decide….

geek shop tours

TourStarter Itinerary

Day 1 - tokyo, japan (thursday, mar. 21, 2024) / welcome to japan.

geek shop tours

Don’t get too caught up in the excitement that is Tokyo however, we will be meeting as a group to gather for a traditional Japanese meal. We will go over our plan of attack for the next day’s expedition and of course – AnimeJapan. This will allow us all to be on the same page and to get what we all want out of the event.

Overnight Location: Tokyo, Japan

Day 2 - Tokyo, Japan (Friday, Mar. 22, 2024) / Ghibli Museum and Robots

geek shop tours

Today we will board a motor coach and head off for an adventure. Our first stop will be none other than the world famous Ghibli museum . Opened in 2001, Tokyo’s Studio Ghibli Museum is home to fan favorite characters from Ghibli Studios films – such as My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away. This whimsical museum uses Miyazaki Hayao’s characters to describe the history of animation and how animators are inspired, but it is much more than that! It feels like an artist’s getaway with its stained glass windows and relaxed atmosphere. You will even have the chance to bring some special artwork home from the library or art collection to mount in your geek den. Oh, and Totoro will be there to greet us, offer a great photo op, and see us off….

We will then go to another famous place in the annals of Anime – the Nakano Broadway . This is yet another Mecca for Geeks and Otaku, and is a stop that cannot be missed on any Anime or Geek tour of Japan. The Nakano Broadway has more than a 100 shops all dedicated to Otaku and Anime culture. It is a paradise for those wanting to purchase anything related to being a geek in Japan, and even boasts the famous Mandarake bookstores, Cosplay costumes stores and much much more. We will give you a lot of time here as the vastness of the four levels of geeky shopping area (and a much needed lunch) demands it.

geek shop tours

Hold on to your hats as we will be headed off to Shinjuku station, which is known to be the world’s busiest train station – servicing over 2 million people a day. If we have time we will head to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building to see all of Tokyo. The view from the tower is stunning and you will see just how massive Tokyo is. The city continues well into the distance.

We will then head out for a pint or two and perhaps some ramen for dinner (on own), prior to heading out to the monstrously famous Robot Restaurant . You will see the battles of huge robots as they pump lasers at each other while music thuds in the background. Tokyo itself makes you feel you have been transported to the future, but no more so then when we visit this space… Giant robots! What is not to like….

geek shop tours

Day 3 - Tokyo, Japan (Saturday, Mar. 23, 2024) / AnimeJapan

geek shop tours

Today we will head to Odaiba and the awesomeness that is AnimeJapan! 2016 saw at least 130000 visitors to this monstrous anime convention which gives attendees the ability to meet creators, voice actors and production company employees. There will also be live performances, concerts, interviews and other coolness throughout the day. There will also be cosplayers! Loads of them actually… Enough to keep even the most passionate of photographers busy all day long… You will even have a chance to rent costumes and join in on the fun if you wish! There will also be loads to buy, so expect to have your backpacks full when we leave.

We will meet mid-afternoon and head off as a group to – Gundam Front! This modestly sized indoor theme park features attractions and shops centered around anime robots. A life-sized Gundam statue even guards the front of the building offering great photo ops. Inside we will experience the Gundam movie and other life size displays, but we will also take in the library of virtually every Gundam model kit ever made.

geek shop tours

We will then let you explore the whole of the island on your own… Perhaps you will stop by the Miraikan National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation. This huge museum based on science and cutting edge technology will surely amaze you. From displays and interactive demonstrations, it is touted as being one of the best museums in all of Japan (it even has an ASIMO robot). Many will want to explore the often missed Daiba Ithome Shotengai mall – which is a nostalgic recreation of 1960s urban Japan. It has tonnes of shops, miniature bowling area, a haunted house and for all you gamers on the tour – a super cool old-fashioned arcade. All this, and a visit to the Tokyo Trick Art Museum! The forty-five two dimensional exhibits allow the most amazing of photo experiences.

geek shop tours

For those that want a little bit more gaming we can head off to the Tokyo Leisureland . This huge entertainment complex features a huge variety of computer games, baseball cages, karaoke, and bowling. You should have your gaming itch well satisfied here! You will be free again to shop and wander Odaiba where you will once again explore and dine one your own. You can even get a bit of One Piece love at the Odaiba One Piece Restaurant.

After dinner we will meet up at Sega’s Joypolis indoor theme park to enjoy the rides and do a final bit of gaming. Be careful of the thrill rides however, their rollercoaster and Half Pipe Canyon are supposed to be crazy… What else could you ask for? Rides, virtual reality, 3-D movies, laser tag, video games, and rock and roll all mixed into one bundle of fun.

Day 4 - Tokyo, Japan (Sunday, Mar. 24, 2024) / Harajuku

geek shop tours

Today we will be off to Harajuku . Often touted as not only the coolest place in Japan, but the place to see the most radical teenage culture and fashion styles. Plus, it is great fun to see all the club meetings, practice sessions, street entertainers and even the odd greaser rockabilly and hip-hop dancers, show off their stuff in Yoyogi park . Sundays are the best day to go here to jam and hang out with a motley crew of coolness. We may even see the odd Gothic Lolitas and Cosplayers hanging out at Harajuku bridge. Yoyogi park itself is one of Tokyo’s largest parks with wide lawns, ponds and forested areas. It is a great place to hang and we will be asking the kami for good weather this day. If you are looking for a bit of calmness and serenity, just a quick walk from the craziness of the street entertainer’s scene one can find one of Tokyo’s best known shrines – Meiji Shrine .

geek shop tours

If you are in Harajuku however, and interested in fashion, anime or just with being hip and cool in Japan, you have to stroll Takeshita Dori (street) and its side streets. Here you will find fashion boutique stores, used clothing stores, and a multitude of Japan hip goodness (along with waffle restaurant or two). You might even want to hop right into the goth scene, and we are more than willing to point out a few Lolita fashion stores to try out if you are game…

For those that want a little less hip-ness, and want to see what the older folks are wearing – visit Omotesando. This tree lined street also boasts cafes, restaurants and fashion boutiques. If you are in the area you really need to stop by Kiddy Land, one of Tokyo’s most famous toy stores. Its multiple floors offer a wide selection of fantastic toy goodness from Hello Kitty to Snoopy. Don’t worry, we will give you plenty of time to explore these areas and to lunch prior to heading off to Shibuya .

geek shop tours

Video gaming fans however, may opt to seek off from the Harajuku to Shibuya a bit early to tackle the Shibuya Kaikan Arcade. The Kaikan is a six story tower that has a vast selection of new and old games. It is an older arcade, but fun and competition is to be had. Others may want to do some more fashion shopping – as Shibuya is also a well-known mecca of Japanese fashion. If that is the case, a stroll in the Center Gai pedestrian zone is called for. This area is lined with stores and game centers alike, and at night comes further to life with night clubs, restaurants and bars. Before you leave us to explore however, we will all have to see one of perhaps Tokyo’ most famous street attractions – Shibuya Crossing. This large intersection is littered with neon advertisements and giant video screens, and is a popular place to stop in the middle of the street for photo ops. For those wanting more anime you also have the Mandarake Shibuya to take advantage of.

Regardless of where your interest lies, we will let you loose in Shibuya until dinner time where we will not only head out for dinner (in Tokyo’s famous entertainment district Roppongi) but also make a “must stop” – at a local Karaoke bar! That’s right! We will sing well into the night and maybe even have a beverage or two prior to heading back to our hotel.  Those that want to stay up late and go clubbing are welcome to it!

Day 5 - Tokyo, Japan (Monday, Mar. 25, 2024) / Akihabara

geek shop tours

Our first stop after arriving at Akihabara Station will be the a tiny museum called the Tokyo Anime Centre to see their displays on our way to the breath taking Animate shopping area. The Tokyo Anime Centre while small, is located right in Akihabara and has information and displays on anime, a way to try voice-acting, exclusives, and more.

From here we will head off to the world famous Animate . This is very possibly the best place to get all your Otaku shopping done. You will be able to find everything from clothing and accessories to manga, figurines, and loads of other coolness! Who knows, there might even be a voice character or anime creator hanging out. They often frequent this cool hide out….

geek shop tours

After lunch we will take a break from the craziness that is Akihabara and visit Kanda-myojin shrine . The shrine is not only beautiful, but also is dedicated to blessing new IT-related ventures or to remove bad luck from those that are ongoing. They even have something special for those of us that need help with our computer related devices. For a small donation the monks at the shrine have created a charm to cast out evil forces from all your digital devices. This three-part charm has something for your wallet, a sticker for your smart phone or other portable device, and larger charm for your computer at home.

If you fancy an arcade stop or two you will find enough to satisfy you in Akihabara. We can help you find Tokyo Leisureland (known to be one of the more laid back of the arcades in the area), Super Potato ! (an eclectic mix of video game museum and retro gamer shop), Club Sega (the oldest Sega arcade in Akihabara and still a favorite of local otaku), Sega Gigo (this massive old school arcade has loads to choose from, plus classic games and up and coming visual gaming experiences), and Taito HEY (which is by far the most recommended and perhaps the best arcade Japan).

geek shop tours

For those that would rather just hang out we will also visit a Maid Café today… Prior to heading out to a group dinner we will all meet at the Akihabara Station to return to the hotel as a group.

NOTE: There is the option for diehard gamers to leave the group to game in Akihabara all day long. You can certainly lose yourself in arcades for that long. Just let us know and we will direct you to the above prior to the day’s destinations….

Day 6 - Mount Fuji, Japan (Tuesday, Mar. 26, 2024) / Fuji Q and Scream Rides

geek shop tours

We will end the day with a return trip to our hotel in Shinjuku. Dinner will be on your own, but remember to pack as we will leave Tokyo behind tomorrow.

Day 7 - Kyoto, Japan (Wednesday, Mar. 27, 2024) / Toei Uzumasa Eigamura/Kyoto Studio Movie Park

geek shop tours

As well as being an actual movie studio (who knows you might see a Japanese actor or actress or two), you will see a recreation of the Nihonbashi bridge, court house and police box and even an ancient red light district. Park guides and living history actors are dressed in period costumes and fun is had by all… There is even a Ninja Maze (full of secret passages, revolving doors and traps), Ninja Performances (watch out for throwing stars), a Haunted House (said to be one of the scariest haunted houses in Japan) and a 3D theater. You can even get dressed up in one of their cool geisha, samurai, or ninja costumes… Want a bit of anime or live action sci-fi tv thrown in? There is even a rotating display dedicated to such otaku coolness throughout the years…

geek shop tours

Many will want to sneak off to do some more shopping and we recommend the Yodobashi department store near our hotel. This mammoth electronics department store has massive areas dedicated to platforms, hardware and software, cameras and toys and cosmetics for all you cosplayers out there... This place is also a modelers delight and you will see many of the Gundam model, action figures or tanks that you have ever wanted. It really is the best geek department store chain in the world...

Overnight Location: Kyoto, Japan

Day 8 - Kyoto, Japan (Thursday, Mar. 28, 2024) / Fushimi Inari Shrine/Kyoto International Manga Museum/Kembu lesson

geek shop tours

From here we will give you time for lunch and a quick look at Animate Kyoto before diving into a bit of real manga goodness at the Kyoto International Manga Museum .   We will give you time to browse and relax in this library museum to really see this celebration of the vast amount of manga published throughout the years. Most are in Japanese but you can even find an English title now and again…

geek shop tours

Day 9 - Osaka, Japan (Friday, Mar. 29, 2024) / Dotonbori/Shinsaibashi

geek shop tours

We will then bring you to Den Den Town and all the electronic goodness that area has to offer. We will allow you some time to delve into the area and stop for lunch prior to heading off to the Shinsaibashi Shopping Arcade and Amerikamura ! As Nipponbashi and Den Den are similar to Tokyo’s Akihabara neighborhood, Amerikamura and Shinsaibashi are Harajuku’s sisters… Here you will see cutting edge teen fashion and culture along with cafes, used clothing shops and loads of boutiques. Shinsaibashi allows for a more refined taste and covers retail chains and department stores. There will be loads of shopping and cafes to people watch for all tastes.

After returning to our hotel we will head out for a group meal to see the Dontonbori entertainment district. Flashing lights, smells of cooking food, neon and huge and welcoming mechanical signs are just the start of what this area has to offer. We will of course take a picture with the Kani Doraku crab sign, but a nice walk around the canal and Ebisu Bashi Bridge is a great way to wind up the night. At night you might want to go clubbing or just take in a great pub and a pint or two, and we will plan a night excursion to remember.

Overnight Location: Osaka, Japan

Day 10 - Osaka, Japan (Saturday, Mar. 30, 2024) / Iga-ryu Ninja Museum

geek shop tours

We will of course also visit the Ninja Museum that houses hidden rooms, trap doors and revolving walls. We can also see the tools of the trade, as the museum also offers displays of ninja weapons and artifacts. Need a smoke bomb for a quick getaway? Or perhaps you need to cross some water in stealth? Here is the place to spy them…

Of course, a GNT tour has to insert a bit of history, so we will also go to the local castle to re-live the Second Iga War and how Oda Nobunaga’s forces destroyed the Iga Ninjas (or did they)..?

The festival also has a Ninja Show that we simply must not miss. You will be amazed at the demonstrations and will go away with a smile on your face from just the coolness of it all…

We will return to Osaka later and head out to our Farewell Dinner and another night out in Dontonbori!

Day 11 - Osaka, Japan (Sunday, Mar. 31, 2024) / Sayonara for now...

5 great geek shopping spots to check out in New York City

By ian goodwillie | mar 31, 2021.

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - SEPTEMBER 20: Batman celebrated his 80th birthday by visiting Gotham’s most iconic sky scraper, the Empire State Building with Dan DiDio, Executive Vice President and Publisher of DC Comics at The Empire State Building on September 20, 2019 in New York City. (Photo by Craig Barritt/Getty Images for Warner Bros. Consumer Products)

This certainly isn’t news but New York City has a lot of options for things to do , regardless of where your personal interests lie. There’s a good reason why millions of people live there and millions more check it out every year.

But one thing that New York has an amazing collection of are geeks shopping spots. These can range from comic shops to toy stores and so much more. For geeks of any kind, New York can be an incredible place to tour.

Forbidden Planet NYC

New York City, Forbidden Planet NYC

It’s an ominous name for an incredible comic shop. The first Forbidden Plant location opened its doors in London, England in 1978. New shops started popping up in other parts of the UK and eventually in New York City, with two distinct groups of stores operating under the same name.

How-To Geek

These are the 10 best places to buy geeky gear and t-shirts online.

Show off your love of Star Wars and other nerdy fandoms with swag from these geeky shops.

Read update

Verified contents and links still good.

Quick Links

A quick note about thinkgeek, general geeky gear, just geeky t-shirts.

You can watch every episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation and read every Frank Miller-penned comic book, but you and I both know that you're not a true nerd unless you wear geeky t-shirts and fill your home with nerdy knickknacks.

Totally kidding, but with these fun websites, you can fill your home and your wardrobe with awesome superhero- and pop culture-themed goodies. These websites sell t-shirts, but some also sell things like collectibles, key chains, toys, mugs, bags, hats, and all kinds of other items. Or, if you'd rather skip the online shopping and just be surprised by a crate of geeky goodies each month, you can always snag a geeky subscription box instead.

UPDATE: 2/24/22

ThinkGeek was one of the original digital storefronts for geeky goodies. Founded in 1999, it catered to computer enthusiasts and general geek culture and sold things like tees, mugs, toys, scientific gadgets, candy, and odd computer peripherals. It also inspired other shops to spring up and sell nerdy merch for all kinds of fandoms.

In May 2015, Hot Topic made an offer to acquire the company but was eventually outbid by another company, GameStop, later that year. In June 2019, ThinkGeek shuttered its online store and integrated its selection into GameStop's online store. Now, you can still shop the curated ThinkGeek products on GameStop's site , but there isn't much of a selection. You can also find a few remnants on Amazon , as well, which has a better selection. So while ThinkGeek is now just a shell of its former self, we still wanted to take a moment to pay homage.

If you're here for all kinds of nerdy niceties---from hats to mugs and all manner of things in between---these stores will help make it clear that you're the coolest geek on the block. It'll be no problem to find affordable gear from your favorite video games, TV shows, comic books, movies, or graphic novels.

Lots of Video Game Goodies: Jinx

If video games are your one true love, you'll find plenty of fun gaming swag at Jinx . The site is flush with outerwear, accessories, t-shirts, mugs, and more all themed around your favorite video games like Overwatch , Assassin's Creed Valhalla , Cyberpunk 2077 , World of Warcraft , Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Breakpoint , PUBG , and more.

Jinx also has a selection of more general pop culture items from properties like Star Wars along with its own line of clothing and accessories with gaming-themed designs on everything from hoodies to leggings. There are options for both men's and women's clothing as well as some unisex options. If you nerd out for video games, Jinx is the shop to beat!

Find gaming-themed apparel, mugs, accessories, and more now at Jinx.

Comic Books, Figurines, and Games: Forbidden Planet

For those who favor things usually found at your local comic book store or gaming store, check out Forbidden Planet . The online store has so many interesting finds---spanning everything from graphic novels and trading cards to costumes and anime DVDs. It has gear for all kinds of fandoms, too, like Studio Ghibli, Dungeons and Dragons , Doctor Who , Marvel, DC, Power Rangers , Harry Potter , Pokémon, and more.

The site also has a terrific Sale section, where you can find awesome items discounted, like Funko Pop! toys, t-shirts, figurines, board games, books, plushies, and so on. One thing to note is that Forbidden Planet is based in the United Kingdom, so those living in the United States or elsewhere will likely need to pay more for shipping and expect longer shipping times. Forbidden Planet is a one-stop shop every geek should visit at one point, as it's most assuredly got something for everyone.

Weird and Wonderful Picks: Shut Up and Take My Money

Shut Up and Take My Money isn't just a great quote from Futurama , it's a website with a vast collection of eccentric, geeky trinkets you won't find anywhere else. From Star Wars lightsaber rings and Dogecoin fidget spinners to a Lord of the Rings firepit and Thor's Mjolnir toilet paper holder .

Most of the products link to Etsy, but you'll occasionally see links to other sites---including Nintendo, Amazon, LEGO, Vinyl Revolution, Blockbuster, or Ruggable ---so transactions actually go through these sites instead of Shut Up and Take My Money. Regardless, the site is an equally fun way to find unique items for your geeky collection or to find gifts for the geek in your life.

Find a truly unique and eclectic gift for the geek in your life now at Shut Up and Take My Money.

Here you can find tons of goodies representing both the Rebel Alliance and the Galactic Empire. Some of our favorites include the First Order 709 Officer Hat and a traditional hooded brown robe from Black Spire on Batuu. No matter which side you've aligned with or who your favorite characters from the franchise are, the Star Wars Shop has something for every Star Wars fan.

From apparel to accessories, the Star Wars shop is the official outlet for merch from that universe.

Unusual Gifts and Gadgets: Firebox

While Firebox does have fandom-specific finds---like a Millennium Falcon desk lamp and a Minecraft alarm clock ---it also leans a little more towards nonspecific nerd-adjacent picks, some of which are a little racy. However, it also offers tons of benign, kid-friendly options to balance things out. Options include toys, lights, pillows, wall art, board and card games, books, coloring books, mugs, chopsticks, coasters, and so much more.

You can browse the store's general selection through brands and categories, or shop by your favorite characters. The site's featured characters include Superman, Deadpool, He-Man, Wonder Woman, Venom, The Punisher, Captain America, Batman, Black Panther, Nightwing, Joker, and Green Lantern.

If you're more into just nerdy t-shirts and not other items, that's totally cool and we---like these t-shirts---have your back. We rounded up some shops that specialize in geeky tees spanning science to superheroes in a variety of materials and sizes.

Lots of Categories and Options: Neatoshop

Neatoshop has a ton of t-shirts and even more categories. Whether you're into programming, space, horror, or fantasy, we're sure you'll find a shirt that's just tee-rific. The store is also famous for its large variety of sizes, fits, and materials, which makes it easy to buy one of its more than 100,000 shirts (spanning 1,300 independent artists) for the entire family.

Some of our favorite tees from Neatoshop include World's #0 Programmer , Wakanda Forever , Rebel Atari , Lady Dimitrescu , Square Pizzas , Unix Highway to shell , The Leftorium , and this adorable Good Vibes Alien . Neatoshop is also known for its proprietary printing technique that always turns out crystal-clear images in incredibly vibrant colors no matter what material they're printing on.

You'll be able to find the perfect geeky t-shirt on Neatoshop, as it offers a ton of categories and designs to sift through.

Most of the site's designs are available on its standard $6 line, though it does offer additional $9 prints from its limited-release vault and $12 full-color premium line as well. Occasionally the site has sales and deals on large orders, too.

You can browse options on the site via material type, price tier, or category, which features options like geek and gaming, TV and movies, pop culture, science and math, and more. Some of the designs we like include: Choose Your Weapon , Classically Trained ,  Adjust VCR , 8-Bit Life Hearts , Pizza Triforce , Team Pluto , They Live on TV , and I Want to Believe .

I’m Back! (And new shop tour)

  • June 6, 2015

Video Transcript

Hey Guys, It’s Mike from The Geek Pub, and I am back!

So a lot of you guys have written some really hilarious comments on my YouTube Channel and my Facebook page, and I really appreciate those. Those are quite hilarious. For those of you who don’t know what I am talking about. I guess it was about 14 months ago I made the announcement that I was going to have to shut The Geek Pub down temporarily because we were selling our house and building a new one. So what I thought would turn into a four or five month move process turned into over a year. Well I’ll spare you all of the boring details of that but lets just say that the housing market in Texas (or at least in North Texas where I live) is through the roof! We thought it would take several months to sell our old house and we sold it in 10 days. So we had to move everything into storage really quickly. The new house, we purchased some land and we were ready to move there, or ready to build a new house there but then we had to fight with the city and all kinds of things to get the house that we wanted on that lot. So that took much much longer than we thought it would take.

Well that being said, we’re here! Welcome to the new shop. The Geek Pub Shop! It is almost finished! I have a few things left to do. I have not setup the dust collection and a few things like that. And I’ll make videos of all those things and show them to you as we go. But the good new is we’re back! We’re back and we’re going to be making videos! I started shooting video last night and this morning. I’ll have videos coming to you hopefully every week staring very soon. The channel is going to change just a little bit. I’m going to incorporate a little bit more woodworking into the channel than you might have seen in some of the past videos the last couple of years. But overall its still the same Geek Pub and we’re still going to do all of these really cool projects that we’ve done in the past. I can’t tell you how excited I am to be back! Have I said that yet, have I said that yet???? I’m going to give you a little shop tour just real fast. I’m going to give you a more in depth detailed one in the future. But this will give you a little one real fast, and then I’m going to talk to you just a little more. So let’s get started with the tour!

So first of all, behind me! I built a French Cleat System. I think you guys will really like this and I’ll do some more videos on that too. I have a lot more stuff I want to do with it. Some cabinetry I want to hang, some drawers and stuff like that that we’ll build in the future for this. As well as some of the little hanging components and all of that. So we’ll talk about that in the future, but it is a french cleat system. I’ve got all of my clamps hanging over here. I’ve got some of the tools that I use with the Saw Stop and some of that, router bits, saw blades. Outside in the garage I’ve got a bunch of other stuff: nuts, bolts, screws, hinges. All of the things that I don’t need accessible right here in the shop all of the time, but I can easily go get them should I need them.

OK. So to my left here is my Grizzly dust collector. This thing is a beast. It is. I don’t remember what the suction or all of that stuff is, but it is a beast. It’s really loud. It’s got this device here that you can clean the filter off with as its running. In fact I’ll just crank it up to let you here it. It don’t if it will do justice on the video but we’ll do that real fast. Enjoy that right!? I don’t even know if you can hear the microphone. In future videos we will set this guy up and I will pipe the shop so that I will have blast gates at each individual tool. And I’ll show you how that works in some future videos. But this guy rocks! It changes everything about how you do woodworking. The shop stays clean! That’s a big thing! I have a Jet Air Fil. Haha Excuse me. I have a Jet Air Filtration unit hanging on the ceiling. It is incredible working in a shop that is not dusty and dirty all the time. It makes a huge, huge difference. So we’ll talk more about that in the future.

Right directly behind me is my Grizzly Band Saw. It’s a 14 inch bandsaw. It’s one of their anniversary series, so its a little bit different color. Most of their stuff is white or green. This guy rocks. I think I’ve had it for about a year and a half now and I’ve use the heck out of it as I’ve had time. It was luckily one of the things that I didn’t have in storage. Or I would have made some videos actually speaking of that but all of my camera gear was, or at least the main pieces that I needed were in storage. But I did get to use it a little bit while we were living in a rental property. That was pretty fun.

OK! To my left here is my Saw Stop. This is the cabinet saw version. It is the I think one and three quarter horsepower. This think rocks! I had a table saw before as you saw in the old Geek Pub videos and this is just like night and day. Its just like going from 75 Pinto to a 2015 Lexus. It is night and day. For those of you who don’t know about the Saw Stop this system has a safety system in it. If your fingers or any part of your body (basically anything that is electrically conductive) makes contact with the blade, within just a few milliseconds the blade drops below the table. There’s some videos you can watch on YouTube where some people do some tests of it with a hot dog. In fact the CEO actually has a video where he actually touches the blade with his finger and he holds it up. There’s not even a nick. You can’t even tell that the blade touched his finger. A saw like this costs a few hundred dollars more than a regular table saw from Grizzly or some of the other guys, but I just felt like the safety feature on this was worth every money. Or every penny. We actually have one of these at the company I work for and we’ve actually had it go off and save someones finger at work. And the deal with that is: You pay lets say four or five hundred dollars more for that safety feature vs 200 thousand dollars to get your hand sewn back together! So to me this was just worth every penny. And like I said, it is a Lexus! It’s not only a safe saw, its an incredibly fun saw to use. So you’ll be seeing that in a lot of the videos coming up!

OK! So the last thing I will show you is over here on the left. This is my DeWalt Planer. It is one of the portable planers and it rolls around on a set of wheels. It is pretty good but I think there are better ones out there on the market. But for the money I don’t know if you can beat this one. You’ll see it in a lot of videos. I’m going to make a cutting board video I think every channel needs a cutting board video. Don’t as me why, but I think every channel that I follow has a cutting board video except mine! And I have a little twist on some cutting boards that I want to make that I think will be unique enough to warrant having my own. But this guy is pretty good. I’ve had a little bit of a problem with it not wanting to feed when its cold, when the weather is cold outside but other than that its done a good job for me. On the other side here I have my lumber cart and it is something I just built a couple of weeks ago so that I could get the shop organized. One of the things that was really important to me was to get this organized so that making videos would be fun. I didn’t want to try to make any videos until I had it at least halfway organized. So that’s been a blast!

So that being said! If you’re not following me on Facebook and Instagram please do! So first of all my website is www.TheGeekPub.com. You can follow me on Facebook at Facebook.com/TheGeekPub. I’m on Instagram at instagram.com/TheGeekPub. And of course, here you’re following me on YouTube at youtube.com/TheGeekPub. I really encourage all of you to go out and like my page on Facebook though if you don’t do anything else because it helps me communicate with you and get feedback from you guys on what you’d like to see next. On what you’d like me to be more clear about or maybe I spend too much time on a video. Give me some feedback about those things! It helps me make even better videos for you guys to see in the future. So if you don’t do anything else: www.facebook.com/TheGeekPub. Hit that like button. See you soon!

Mill Geek Comics SHOP TOUR!

Updated: Dec 22, 2019

We’re back again with a new entry in VIDEO BACKLOG, the blog series where I, Fire Guy Ryan, hold your hand and take you on a whimsical journey through the magical backlog of ComicTom101 video content!

Russ, one of the cohosts of our channel (follow him on Instagram here !), is the owner of Mill Geek Comics , a comic shop up here in Mill Creek, Washington. Earlier this year he upgraded, and relocated to a bigger, more visible store; and in today’s VIDEO BACKLOG I’ll be discussing the live stream in which Tom, myself, and Russ gave a live tour of the new and improved Mill Geek Comics location. If you don’t feel like reading any more and just want to get straight to the video, click here to head to our channel and check it out! If not, scroll down and reward me for the work it took to type up this article by reading all of the valuable insights I shall provide imminently; in that trademark, overlong, drawn-out, Fire Guy way.

In September 2018, Tom and I decided the channel needed a long-form, recurring show that we could bring to the community on a weekly basis. We liked the idea of YouTube live streams and wanted to do more of them, so we decided to start our very first Bags and Boards Live Show on September 30th, 2018. We sat down for an hour, live, with the community in the chat, and just had a conversation. We were also joined partway through by our editor, Slav, for one of his very few appearances in front of the camera! It was very unscripted and rough, but a lot of fun, and pretty successful to boot. Here is the link to that first Live Show, if you feel like checking that out. That’s certainly not the video I’m here to write about today, however!

We continued the tradition of doing a Bags and Boards Live Show every week for about nine months. During this time, Russ had made the decision to move from his smaller shop, on the backside of a 7-11 with no street visibility, to a much larger shop just down the road that can actually be seen from the street! The first week that his shop was up and running, we decided to host our weekly Bags and Boards Live Show from the shop itself and give the audience a tour while we were at it.

The first part of this half-hour video is just Tom and myself up in Russ’s office, explaining why we’re in a different place than our usual live shows and setting up the audience for the tour of the shop that we’re about to take them on.

However, this happened to be an interesting time in the history of our channel. This day - March 6th, 2019 - was the day our first partnership with the YouTube channel Variant Comics went live! Variant Comics is one of the largest comic book channels on YouTube, and we partnered with them for a giveaway centered around the Captain Marvel film, which was about to premiere at that time.

Arris, the host of Variant Comics, released his video - featuring our channel! - during our live stream, so we watched it live alongside our community. (Skip to the 14:00 minute mark in the video if you want to see this part!)

As you can plainly see by these photos, this was clearly an exciting day for us.

Russ joined us in his office after this, and he explained his move in more detail. After this explanation, the three of us left the office and began the tour of the shop.

It’s a big store. Two floors! We started out in the upstairs of the shop, where Russ’s office is. He gave us a tour of the upper-floor communal space, which has at least four separate rooms, a bathroom and shower, AND a kitchen.

Downstairs is where the important rooms are! That’s where the COMICS are. And there are plenty of them. Mostly in the large, open area in the back of the shop, where new comics are prepped every week, by your very own Fire Guy Ryan himself!

This is also the space where we assemble the Mystery Mail Call every month. What’s the Mystery Mail Call, you ask?!

geek shop tours

Why, dear reader, it’s our monthly comic book subscription service! For more details, click this link !

We then went from the back of the shop to the front of the shop, where all the new comics are displayed in glorious fashion:

This is also the part of the live stream where Russ tried to explain the then-popular Ziggy Pig Silly Seal secret poop variant to me. I was not getting it.

At the end of the video, Tom mentions that we were approaching 10,000 YouTube subscribers at the time we shot this (March 2019). That was just over one year since the start of our YouTube channel, back in February 2018. Right now, as I type this, we’re approaching 19,000 subscribers. Meaning we’ve gained almost as many subscribers in the past six months as we did in the entire first year of our channel being online! This really put things into perspective for me and caused me to reflect on our insane growth as a channel in the past year and a half. That’s a big part of the reason I’m writing articles on older videos like this one! So everybody who wasn’t around at the time can see some of the gold that we have in our backlog!

So stay tuned! I’ll for sure have another one of these articles ready to go in the near future. I’ve already got some more interesting videos in mind that could use a bit of a spotlight on them. Hopefully you enjoyed this article and find value in this concept! I’m enjoying the trip down memory lane, so if nothing else this entire exercise can just be an excuse for me to wax nostalgic. Thanks again to everybody who made it this far. We wouldn’t be here without you!

Fire Guy Ryan (sometimes just known as Normal Ryan) is one of the co-hosts on the ComicTom101 YouTube channel (and podcast!). When he's not reading comics or talking about them with his friends Tom, Russ, Jeff and Eryn, he's most likely working his graveyard job at the hotel in Seattle or sleeping in the daytime, and those are the two reasons he's probably not answering you right now. He's a lover of storytelling - film and television in particular - and every now and then he tries writing his own screenplay. He totally didn't write this blurb about himself either.

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The second day of the 88th Masters was never going to be kind to Tiger Woods. It was an intersection of worst-case scenarios, with Woods having to play early and often in cold temperatures. It takes him hours to get his battered body ready to play golf, which meant an early wake-up call Friday morning to resume his first round at 7:50 a.m.

He had to play the final five holes of his opening round before arriving at the first tee to start his second. For a man who said earlier this week that “every shot that’s not on a tee box is a challenge,” 18 holes is more than enough. Especially on the hilliest course players face all year. Add in the cold and windy conditions that make it difficult to loosen up a body pieced together by screws and rods and fused joints, and it seemed that the factors had conspired against him this week.

But Friday also was an opportunity to make more history at a course he admires more than any other. Woods said earlier this week that he is here to win. That he teed it up because he believes another victory is still possible “if everything comes together.” Victories are what drive him, but they do not cause him to downplay the seemingly mundane act of just making the cut.

On Friday, he had the opportunity to establish another record cuts streak. He was seeking his 24th consecutive made cut in this tournament, a streak that would surpass the mark he shared with Gary Player and Fred Couples. Despite the unfavorable conditions and his physical limitations, Woods did so with relative ease, shooting 73-72 to finish well inside the line . He was T25 when he walked off the 18th green Friday afternoon. He promised that a needling text message would soon be sent to Couples to mark the occasion.

“It's consistency, it's longevity, and it's an understanding of how to play this golf course,” Woods said Tuesday of the record. "Now, you still have to go out and execute it, but there's a lot of knowledge that goes into understanding how to play (Augusta National). …That's the neat thing about this. I can still go through the mental Rolodex and bring out a few putts from the '90s that still move generally in that direction and the effect that Rae's Creek has on certain shots and putts. And it means a lot.”

Woods’ affection for Augusta National comes not just from the genius of Alister MacKenzie’s design, which allows him to fully utilize his creativity and shot-making skills, but also because of the course’s annual accumulation of history. This is the same place where he played his first major championship, competing in 1995 as the reigning U.S. Amateur champion. He watched from the Crow’s Nest as Gene Sarazen, Byron Nelson and Sam Snead hit the ceremonial tee shots. Three years later, he marveled at the fact that those three were drinking the milkshakes he had on his Champion’s Dinner menu.

“There's such an aura and mystique about playing this golf course,” he said.

He played practice rounds with Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus in his first Masters, and has been playing here long enough to see the likes of Jordan Spieth and Scottie Scheffler put on the green jacket. Augusta National spans generations. Woods missed the cut in his second Masters, so this record-setting streak started with his 12-shot victory here in 1997. He has won here five times but also played through swing changes and injury and personal scandal. No matter what, he has always found a way to make the cut. For two dozen years in a row.

Tiger Woods’ 1997 victory at the Masters | 25 years later

Woods tied the record last year by slogging through torrential rains and temperatures in the 40s as he completed his suspended second round early on a Saturday morning. Woods, who would need ankle surgery weeks later, was seen limping up the hill on the par-4 17th as he finished his round.

This year, he arrived at Augusta National with just 24 holes of competitive golf under his belt.

Though he said late last year that he hoped to compete once a month in 2024, Woods only appeared at The Genesis Invitational before this week. Six holes into his second round at Riviera, he had to withdraw with the flu . His body didn’t allow him to make another start before Augusta, he said.

“Some days I just feel really good,” he said, “and other days, not so much.”

Athletes reflect on Tiger Woods’ 2019 Masters victory

His mind, and his hands, are still world class. The question each time he tees it off is whether his body will allow him to use them to their full capabilities. Woods plays the role of wily veteran these days. No longer overpowering courses with his length, he hits a sliding fade off the tee to keep his ball in play and uses a crafty short game to stay around par. He made the cut easily despite hitting less than half his greens (17 of 36).

"His short game was so good. I don't think I can explain how good some of the chip shots he hit today were," said Max Homa, who played alongside Woods. "He's special.

"We had a really quick turnaround, and if I was feeling tired and awful. I imagine he was feeling even worse," Homa added. "All the cliches you hear about him and all the old stories about how he will grind it out, it was fun to see that in person."

Woods was 1-under par when play was suspended Thursday evening . He made two bogeys on the five holes he played Friday morning, signing for a 1-over 73. He started the second round with pars on his first two holes before playing a six-hole stretch without a single par. He made birdie on the third hole, hitting a 91-yard wedge shot to 9 feet before bogeys on Nos. 4 and 5, two of the course’s most difficult holes. Then he chipped in on the par-3 sixth. He made another bogey after finding a greenside bunker on the par-4 seventh and rebounded with birdie at the par-5 eighth. Five consecutive pars followed before a bogey at the 14th hole. But he reached the green in two to birdie the par-5 15th before closing with three consecutive pars.

“I'm here,” he said. “I have a chance to win the golf tournament.”

That wouldn’t be possible without making the cut. Add another record to Woods’ remarkable Masters career.
