The Tour de France is eternal, but 2024 packs plenty of firsts and plot-twists to deliver what should be a thrilling edition.

Not only are big hitters such as Jonas Vingegaard , Tadej Pogačar , Primož Roglič , and Remco Evenepoel expected to clash in a generational battle, the 111th edition of the French grand tour will deliver an interesting backdrop.

Early details reveal a varied and interesting route:

• 3492km total
• June 29 to July 21
• Four territories (Italy, San Marino, France, Monte Carlo)
• 7 mountain stages
• 4 summit finishes
• 32km of gravel roads

With the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris dictating the calendar, the men’s Tour de France — which will runs from June 29 to July 21 — will not finish in Paris as the riders head for Nice for a final-day time trial.

“We were committed to avoid Paris because of the Olympics,” Tour director Christian Prudhomme told Reuters . “There are only 28,000 police forces available and we knew we could not get more.”

Since its inception in 1903, the men’s race has always finished in Paris or its surrounding suburbs, and it has concluded on the Champs Élysées since 1975.

Also in a first, the race will start in Italy with the three opening stages.

Here are the key points:

‘Big Start’ in Italy for historical first

After more than a century, the “big loop” will make its “Big Start” in Italy for the first time.

Stage 1 jumps right into it, with a road stage starting in Florence and ending in Rimini, with a detour through San Marino. The yellow jersey will be up for grabs, with sprinters like Mark Cavendish, Jasper Philipsen, and Wout van Aert will need to endure 3600m of climbing as the route climbs over the Apennines.

Stage 2 pays homage to Marco Pantani and runs from Cesenatico to Bologna will hit the famed San Luca climb in final hour of racing that could throw a spanner in the wheels of the sprinters.

Stage 3 runs across the flats from Piacenza to Torino in what is expected to be the first chance for the sprinters.

Week 1: Into France and up the Galibier

The race’s three-day sojourn ends with stage 4 from Pinerolo to Valloire grinds up and over the Alps, including an assault of the HC Col du Galibier (23km at 5.1%).

“The Tour has never been so high so soon,” said Tour director Christian Prudhomme.

Stages 5 and 6 will see the sprinters see more chances as the race leaves the Alps only to return in the final weekend.

Stage 7 delivers a 25km individual time trial across the vineyards of Burgundy. The rolling course isn’t too long, and the GC will remain knotted up for anyone who’s survived the brutal first week.

Stage 8 from Semur-en-Auxois to Colombey-les-Deux-Eglises sees a string of climbs early in the undulating stages to set up a breakaway. 

The opening week closes with a challenging stage featuring no less than 14 sectors of gravel on 34km of racing in a loop around Troyes.

Week 2: Pyrénées loom and a return of Plateau de Beille

Week 2 opens with a transition stage out of Orleans across the flats of central France and the Loire Valley that can be open to strong crosswinds.

Stage 11 dips into the Massif Central, with 4.350 of vertical gain, and the Néronne, the Puy Mary Pas de Peyrol, Pertus, and Font de Cère climbs stacked up late in the back half of the profile.

Stages 12 and 13 are, at least on paper, more chances for the sprinters, but midway into any Tour, breakaway chances increase by the kilometer.

The Tour’s first major mountaintop finale comes in stage 14 with Saint-Lary-Soulan deep in the Pyrénées, featuring the Col du Tourmalet midway through the stage.

Stage 15 sees a return to the Plateau de Beille (15.8km at 7.9%) in the Tour’s second-straight summit finale. Adding to the drama will be France’s Bastille Day, with six climbs and 4850m of vertical, fireworks are guaranteed.

Week 3: Alps and final-day TT decider

Despite a grueling opening two weeks, week three will crown the winner.

Stage 16 opens up the action in what’s likely another chance for the sprinters — who will see likely eight chances in this year’s edition — but the mistral heading into Nimes could prove tricky.

Stage 17 to Superdévoluy tiptoes into the Alps, and breakaway artists will have their chance to take centerstage with three moderate climbs stacked up in the final hour of racing. Another transition stage to Barcelonnette in stage 18 could deliver another breakaway.

Back-to-back summit finales high in the Alps will set up the decisive closing weekend anchored by the final-time trial in Nice, the first time the Tour’s ended in an individual time trial since 1989 when Greg LeMond overcame Laurent Fignon in his historic victory.

Altitude will be a key factor in both stages.

Stage 19 sees three summit higher than 2000m, and stage 20 tackles four climbs in a short, 133km circuit-burner ending atop Col de la Couillole. Vertical tops 7000m in two days of racing.

If the race remains undecided, the tension will be sky high in the “dernière bataille” in the 34km individual time trial up and over La Turbie and Col d’Eze climbs.

The countdown begins for the Tour de France arrival in Nice 2024. Literally and figuratively. A counter has been installed at Rauba Capeu counting the days before the arrival of the Tour de France in Nice. The iconic “I Love Nice” sculpture has now been changed to the colors of the Tour de France.

The dates to keep in mind are July 20 and July 21 2024 . On Saturday 20th July, the riders will set off from the Promenade des Anglais on a spectacular route up to the Col de la Couillole in Stage 20 .The race will close with a time trial between Monaco and Nice, ending at Place Massena on Sunday July 21 in Stage 21 . For the first time in the history of the famous bicycle race, the cyclists will arrive in a city other than Paris. And it ends with an exciting time trial rather than the traditional procession down the Champs Elysées.

Tour de France 2024

The Olympic Games in Paris this year (26 July to 11 August) has forced a change of plans for the Tour de France. Since Paris will be embroiled in preparations for the Olympics, the Tour de France will completely bypass the City of Light. Instead, the prestigious cycling race will begin in Florence the 29 June and continue in central Italy before proceeding through France. Here is a map of the entire route:

The race consists of 21 individual stages, each offering its own unique characteristics and challenges. These stages vary in length, terrain, and difficulty, ranging from flat, sprinter-friendly routes to grueling mountain climbs.

Throughout the race, rest days are scheduled to allow riders to recuperate and recharge their energy levels. These rest days also provide an opportunity for teams to strategize and make any necessary adjustments for the remainder of the race.

In addition to individual stage victories, riders compete for the overall classification, symbolized by the iconic yellow jersey (maillot jaune). The rider with the lowest cumulative time across all stages wears the yellow jersey and leads the general classification. Other classifications include the green jersey (points classification), polka dot jersey (mountains classification), and white jersey (best young rider).

Riders must finish each stage within a specified time limit to remain in the race. Failure to do so may result in elimination from the Tour de France.

The fact that the race will conclude with a time trial this year means that there will be no winner until the finish line is crossed at Place Massena. Should be exciting!

In the above altitude chart, note that the cyclists ascend to an altitude of 1607m above sea level at the Col de Turini, descend to 568m at Roquebillière, climb to 1500m at the Col de Colmiane, descend again and reach the summit of Col de la Couillole at 1678m. The route is 133km.

Where to Watch the Tour de France 2024

Yes there will be crowds. Everywhere. But especially in Nice and Monaco. Some of the details are still being worked out but we do know that it will be free to watch the cyclists arrive in Nice at the end of the race. There will be barriers placed along the Promenade des Anglais as the racers speed down the Prom from the Quai Rauba Capeu to the Hotel Negresco where they will reverse course before finishing at the Place Massena. There will be grandstands around the Place Massena and along the Prom with tickets distributed to partners and associates of ASO, the company that runs the Tour de France. There will also be barriers along the entire route to the Place Massena behind which the public can gather to watch the exciting finish.

I don't need to remind you that the public viewing areas will be jammed. If you act fast though, you may be able to score a hotel room with a view of the race. Here are the hotels along the Promenade des Anglais with a view of the Tour de France:

Back Country

Viewing the Tour de France from a country road or a mountain village can be a great way to explore the lesser known highlights of the region and also join in the Tour de France fun. The problem is getting there and finding parking if you go by car. In most cases it's preferable to arrive by public transport. Here are some possible vantage points:

Another option for viewing the race is to head up to Isola 2000, a ski resort that's easily accessible by bus from Nice. Stage 19 will finish there on 19 July.

Tour de France 2024 to be held from June 29 to July 21

For the first time, the Grand Tour cycling race will start in Florence, Italy and finish in Nice, bypassing Paris due to the upcoming Olympics.

The Tour de France 2024 is all set to begin with the Grand Depart on June 29 and will wrap up on July 21.

To accommodate the preparations for the Paris 2024 Olympics, set to begin on July 26, several adjustments have been to this year's route.

Now in its 111th edition, the Tour de France will flag off from Florence and roll through a total distance of 3,492km underlined by 52,000m of elevation gain. The tour will reach Nice after 21 stages and for the first time, will bypass the French capital.

Spread across 23 days that includes two days of rest, the Tour de France will have two individual time trials. Four mountain-top finishes, a series of gravel sections for the first time, and a hilly time trial to Nice.

With Florence hosting the Grand Depart event this year, this is the first time that an Italian city will get the distinction. Last year, the Grand Depart was hosted by Spain.

The first stage will comprise a hilly 205km stretch from Florence to Rimini on the Adriatic coast while the second is set to depart from the Emilia-Romagna town of Cesena and end in University town Bologna. The third goes from Piacenza to Turin.

The fourth stage will also start in Italy at Pinerolo following which the action is set to move to France.

On July 20, the riders will resume from the Promenade des Anglais on a route up to the Col de la Couillole. On July 21, the 21st and final stage will be contested as a time trial between Monaco and Nice, instead of a traditional sprint on the Champs-Elysées.

This will be the first time since 1989 that the Tour will end in a time trial.

Jonas Vingegaard, who won his second straight title last year, will be the defending champion.

Tour de France 2024 Route stage 21: Monaco - Nice

It’s almost 20 kilometres along the coast to get from Monaco to Nice, but luckily the riders are sent into the mountains after a short stint on the flat. The riders roll of the ramp in one of the most famous harbors in the world and set off in the direction off Italy, but make a U-turn and return to climb up the D53 to La Turbie. It’s an 8.1 kilometres effort with an average gradient of 5.6%.

The route then descends to Éze, which is a staple section on Paris-Nice. Usually the riders go straight ahead, and further downhill, towards Nice, which is not happening this time. Instead, a righthander takes the riders onto a 1.6 kilometres climb at 8.1%.

After a reaching the summit of the Col d’Éze on its steepest side the riders continue downhill towards Nice. They reach the Promenade des Anglais and race on the flat along the Mediterranean only to make a U-turn and return to the city centre and finish on Avenue Jean Médecin.

CYCLISME. Grand Prix du Morbihan 2024 : ce qu'il faut savoir sur la 9ᵉ manche de la Coupe de France de cyclisme sur route

Ce samedi 4 mai, la 9ᵉ manche de la Coupe de France de cyclisme professionnel FDJ se déroulera sur les routes du Morbihan. Avec un parcours de 196,4 kilomètres entre Josselin et Plumelec, découvrez tous les détails de cette épreuve : horaires, parcours et infos pratiques. Un événement incontournable dans le calendrier des amateurs de vélo.

Cette 9ᵉ manche de la Coupe de France de cyclisme sur route rassemble à Plumelec 19 équipes et plus de 133 coureurs au départ. Avec un parcours physique, cette étape promet des défis de taille pour les participants et devrait offrir un spectacle captivant pour les spectateurs.

Un parcours de 196,4 km

La première partie de l'épreuve se joue en ligne, sur 66,5 km entre Josselin et Plumelec en passant par Ploërmel, Guillac, Saint-Servant, Cruguel ou encore Saint-Aubin, une course pour le moins ardue avec une route composée de plusieurs dénivelés. Sur cette course, trois points de passage comptent pour le classement du meilleur grimpeur.

L'un à Taupon (km 8), un autre à Gueguon (km 27) et le dernier en arrivant à Plumelec lors du premier passage du grand tour (km 65,5). Le classement des sprints Intermédiaires se joue sur trois sprints à Guillac (km 18), à Cruguel (km 40,5) et enfin au début du deuxième petit tout à Plumelec (km 141,8).

Une fois la première partie en ligne terminée, les choses sérieuses commencent ! 

La partie la plus compliquée du parcours se situe très certainement dans ce circuit final autour de Plumelec. Ce circuit se compose d'abord d'un enchaînement de 5 grands tours de 13,7 km et ensuite de 8 petits tours de 7,8 km. Sans oublier que les cyclistes vont devoir franchir à 13 reprises la célèbre côte de Cadoudal (1,8 km à 6,3 %), de quoi en fatiguer plus d'un.

Nul doute que cette épreuve prisée des équipes et des coureurs va donner des envies de victoire. Certains vont vouloir s'illustrer alors que le Grand Prix du Morbihan fête ses 50 ans cette année. 19 équipes de 7 coureurs sont en lice.

De nombreux profils de coureurs peuvent s'imposer, du grimpeur au sprinteur en passant par le puncheur. Le Belge Arnaud De Lie (Lotto DSTNY), vainqueur de l'édition 2023 , devrait avoir envie de s'imposer une nouvelle fois. Mais la concurrence sera rude.

Date, heures et infos pratiques

Le départ de la course lui sera donné au Centre culturel de Josselin à 12h30 ce samedi 4 mai. Les premiers coureurs devraient commencer leur premier tour de Plumelec vers 14h, pour une arrivée prévue à partir de 17h15 à Plumelec.

L'accès à la zone d'arrivée de Plumelec sera facturé 5€. Pour un stationnement pratique et tranquille, des emplacements sont disponibles à proximité de la ligne d'arrivée, aux alentours de la rue Le Prassun. En seulement 4 minutes, vous pouvez rejoindre le circuit du Grand Prix du Morbihan !

Le Grand Prix du Morbihan fait partie des événements sportifs retransmis en direct sur les antennes TV et numériques de France 3 Bretagne dès 15h ainsi que sur france.tv.

À savoir que le lendemain, le dimanche 5 mai, la 10ᵉ manche de cette Coupe de France, le Tro Bro Leon, qui se joue dans le Finistère, sera également sur les antennes TV et numériques de France 3 Bretagne ainsi que sur france.tv dès 15h30. La course sera également commentée en breton et diffusée sur notre site internet à partir de cette même heure 15h30.

Parcours de la Flamme Olympique 2024, découvrez la carte des étapes dans toute la France

65 villes-étapes, 100 sites emblématiques... découvrez en détail, la carte et le trajet qui sera emprunté par la flamme olympique, du mercredi 8 mai 2024, date de son arrivée à marseille en provenance de grèce, au vendredi 26 juillet lorsque la vasque sera allumée au trocadéro, point d'orgue de la cérémonie d'ouverture des jeux olympiques de paris 2024..

Après neuf jours de relais en Grèce, du 16 avril 2024 (jour de la cérémonie d'allumage de la flamme à Olympie) au 26 avril 2024 (jour de la cérémonie de passation de la flamme au stade Panathénaïque à Athènes), la flamme quittera la Grèce depuis le port du Pirée à bord du trois-mâts Le Belem , lequel traversera la mer Méditerranée pour rejoindre Marseille le 8 mai. Au total, ce seront près de 10 000 porteurs qui se relaieront pendant plus de onze semaines sur l'ensemble du territoire.

La flamme olympique parcourra des lieux emblématiques chargés d'histoire, tels que les grottes de Lascaux, le Château de Versailles, le Mont-Saint-Michel et les châteaux de la Loire, célébrant ainsi la richesse culturelle et l'Histoire de France.

Au fil de son parcours, la Flamme rendra hommage à des figures historiques françaises influentes comme Jeanne d'Arc à Orléans et Charles de Gaulle à Colombey-les-Deux-Eglises. Chaque étape est pensée comme une réflexion sur ceux qui ont façonné le pays, reliant le passé et le présent de manière symbolique et éducative.

Le relais mettra également en lumière la diversité du patrimoine naturel de la France, traversant des sites naturels spectaculaires de la vallée du Mont-Blanc aux côtes méditerranéennes. Ces lieux illustrent la beauté des paysages français et leur importance dans l'identité nationale.

Paris (ville-étape) Le parcours de la flamme olympique à Paris le 15 juillet commencera à l'INSEP et traversera le Bois de Vincennes avant de se diriger vers le 18e arrondissement. La flamme continuera ensuite vers la Porte de la Chapelle, puis passera près de l'Arc de Triomphe. D'autres points d'intérêt notables sur son itinéraire incluent Roland-Garros (Court Simonne-Mathieu) ainsi que le Musée Carnavalet. Le voyage de la flamme se conclura sur la place de la République.

2024 Tour de France will conclude with Nice time trial

Race to finish outside Paris area for first time in history

The 2024 Tour de France will finish with a time trial in Nice, marking the first time in history that the race will end outside of the Paris area. The change of venue for the grand finale of the Tour has been forced by Paris' hosting of the 2024 Olympics, which get underway in the city on July 26.

It will also be the first time that the Tour concludes with a time trial since Greg LeMond dramatically pipped Laurent Fignon on the Champs-Elysées in 1989.

The length and precise nature of the time trial have yet to be revealed, but Tour organiser ASO has confirmed that the 2024 Tour will finish on Sunday, July 21, just five days before the opening ceremony of the Olympics. 

ASO has yet to confirm when the 2024 Tour de France Femmes will take place, but a change of date may be necessary to avoid a clash with the Olympics.

"This new finish, conditioned by the logistical imperatives that will already block the Champs-Elysées just a few days before the start of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, is accompanied by a significant sporting challenge as the last stage will be an individual time trial," Tour organiser ASO said in a statement on Thursday.

"The sporting qualities of the riders likely to win mean that the Tour could remain undecided until the last few kilometres, as was the case in 1989, the last time the event offered a time trial to close the proceedings."

The penultimate stage of the 2024 men's Tour, meanwhile, is set to take in the rugged terrain in the hinterland of Nice, which has provided so many breathless finales to Paris-Nice over the years.

"The riders will be on the region's roads on Saturday, 20 July," ASO said. "They are all aware that the Nice backcountry lends itself to unbridled, high-intensity rides, almost systematically on the final stage of Paris-Nice. So, there could be opportunities just until the very end to rattle the yellow jersey."

The location of the Grand Départ of the 2024 Tour is due to be announced early in the New Year, with Florence expected to be the site of the race's first-ever Italian start . It would be the Tour's third foreign Grand Départ in succession after Copenhagen in 2022 and Bilbao in 2023.
