We have been offering hot rod tours through Munich since 2017. There is a lot to see and experience in our residential city located at the river Isar. The architectural masterpieces from the Gothic, Baroque and Rococo periods alone are a real eye-catcher. These include the Frauenkirche, the Karlstor, our Viktualienmarkt and Nymphenburg Palace. Leopoldstrasse, the nightlife district of Schwabing and the English Garden as well as the Glockenbachviertel and Gärtnerplatz also represent Munich’s diversity. However, Munich not only stands for classic beauty, but also for progress and modernity. The BMW headquarters, the futuristic Hypo building as well as the football Allianz Arena.

Our station is located in the beautiful Berg am Laim district. The former industrial ground place Pfanni Werke was founded here in 1949 and the site was known as Europe’s largest dumpling kitchen. These production facilities have not been in operation for a long time. The site became the Kunstpark Ost close to eastern central station, Europe`s biggest club area in the 2000, nowaydays known as Werksviertel-Mitte. Located in the center of the Werksviertel-Mitte, we opened our new homebase at the Container Collective in 2020. The hot rods fit perfectly into the urban, yet ultra-modern ambience. The Werksviertel-Mitte cannot be missed, it is also home to the world’s largest mobile Ferris wheel with the beautiful Bavarian name Umadum.

After or even before a tour with our hot rods, you can enjoy all the benefits of the entire area, starting with the Dompierre French Bakery, the culinary offerings of Aloha Poke, Augustiner and many different restaurants and cafés. The Werksviertel-Mitte offers a large number of various concerts and events on the central place ‘Knödelplatz’ , stand up comedy at the Quatsch Comedy Club, as well as pubs and clubs. With the Hot Rod Fun Tours you will get the most out of your experience in Munich. The beautiful surrondings in Upper Bavaria are also worth visiting, especially lake Tegernsee or lake Starnberg are popular local recreation destinations.

On the Hot Rod Fun Country Tour, depending on the route, we are driving along the Würmtal valley and make a stop at the Schäftlarn Monastery. Other possible destinations in the surrounding area include Bad Tölz in the south of Munich, Wolfratshausen and Pullach. You can book a stopover at the Waldwirtschaft for some traditional bavarian food as part of special tours, through the serpentines at Schäftlarn Monastery, or for adventourous tours via Lenggries to Spitzingsee or even Kochelsee and up to Walchensee.

I was pretty unhappy with G Adventures at the beginning as I had expressed concerns with my health and wanted to cancel but they wouldn’t refund my money. However, the guide that I had, Andrei, was so incredible. He was so comforting, helpful, kind, and fun. I was so scared going into it but Andrei was so amazing and I truly could not have asked for a better guide. If I could give him a million stars I would.

Following are the things that should be included in your future offerings. - Tours should include some thrilling activities such as speed boat riding, 3D/VR experience, skydiving or other similar activities as an add-on options wherever available in the countries included in the package. This is because mere sightseeing and visit of cultural, religious and traditional places will add little to fun and thrill. - Hotels is the stay should be advised to ensure provision of basis necessities such as sleepers for washrooms, tooth paste. Hotels should also provide at least one or two Halal dishes to the people from Muslim countries.

My very 1st vacation tour! Cities were a good pick. Our guide Mario was very good as were the local guides. I liked being in a group, but also enjoy the freedom of not being together all the time.

Calendar of Events in Munich

All dates and events are subject to change. Contact the Munich Tourist Office at Sendlinger Strasse 1 at the Hauptbahnhof (tel. 089/233-96-500 ) for more information. The board publishes a free calendar of forthcoming events three times a year: in April, October, and January; the first two are biannual calendars and the last is a yearly preview. The calendars list the dates of trade fairs and exhibitions, theatrical and musical performances, local folk festivals, sporting events, conferences, and congresses throughout Germany.

For events beyond those listed here, check http://events.frommers.com, where you'll find a searchable, up-to-the-minute roster of what's happening in cities all over the world.

Fasching (Carnival). Pre-Lenten revelry characterizes this weeks-long bash, with a whirl of colorful parades and masked balls. Special events are staged at the Viktualienmarkt. The celebration, which culminates on Fasching Sunday and Shrove Tuesday, lasts 4 to 6 weeks, depending on the dates of the Lenten season. For specifics, call the Munich Tourist Office (tel. 089/233-96-500 ).

Munich Fashion Week. The latest and often most elegant parades of fashion are staged at various venues across the city. Mid-February.

Starkbierzeit. The "strong beer season" provides serious beer drinkers with a fresh crop to tide them over until Oktoberfest. Just a pint of one of the dense brews churned out specifically for the season (beginning the third Fri of Lent and lasting 2 weeks) ought to satiate most buzz seekers. Beers with the suffix "-ator" (Salvator, for example) were created to be consumed at Lent. This dalliance from the strict fasting rules of Lent was approved by the pope long ago: When he tasted what Münchners had been imbibing, he found it unpleasant enough to think that anyone who drank it would not be violating the fast. (What he didn't realize was that the beer had traveled a considerable distance to get to him, which is why it was bad!) The tradition continues.

April & May

Auer Dult. A Munich tradition, Auer Dult is a colorful 8-day flea market that occurs three times a year. Prize antiques and vintage junk await the most disciplined bargain hunters. Merchants set up shop on the Mariahilfplatz on the last Saturday in April (Maidult), the end of July (Jakobidult), and the end of October (Herbst Dult).

Corpus Christi Street Processions. Street parades with dressed-up horses, a carried statue symbolizing Christ, girls dressed in white, a canopy, priests, and other functionaries are seen all around the region on the Thursday following the eighth Sunday after Easter.

Munich Film Festival. This festival isn't as popular as the February International Film Festival in Berlin, but it draws a serious audience. Late June.

Tollwood. This summer music festival, originated by environmentalists, honors the free spirit of jazz, blues, and rock from the third week in June through the first week of July in Olympiapark. Ask at the Munich Tourist Office.

Opera Festival and Munich Summer of Music. The Munich Philharmonic Orchestra's Summer of Music and the Bavarian State Opera Festival highlight the work of Munich's prodigal son, Wagner, and other masters including Mozart, Orff, Mahler, and Strauss. Contact the Munich Tourist Office (tel. 089/233-96-500 ) for details. All month.

Christopher Street Day. The big day for the estimated 100,000 gay men and lesbians who live in the city attracts people from across Bavaria. This fun-filled parade, with its outrageous costumes, is one of the largest such events in Europe. It is named after the street in New York's Greenwich Village that was the site of the 1960s Stonewall Riots, said to have launched the gay liberation movement. Mid-July.

Auer Dult. See the Auer Dult entry under "April & May," above.

Olympiapark Sommerfest. This well-attended summer festival near Coubertin Platz is an outdoor musical scene that ranges from classical music to rock and jazz, along with productions staged in the park's open-air theater. Admission is free. For details, call tel. 089/30-67-0 or visit www.olympiapark.de.

How to “do” Oktoberfest The world’s greatest beer festival starts in September and runs to the first Sunday in October. All the trinken und essen (drinking and eating) at this giant 2 1/2-week party takes place at the traditional Theresienwiese (“Wiesn” for short) festival grounds, where different beers are sold in 14 different tents, each with its own atmosphere and food (sausage and sauerkraut prevail). If you’ve got kids with you (they’ll love the rides), the Augustiner tent is considered to be the most family-friendly tent. The best food is found at Käfer’s Wiesn’n-Schanke. Oktoberfest beer is delicious but strong, with a 5 to 7 percent alcohol level, and it’s served in 1-liter portions. Translation: Pace your beer drinking and drink plenty of water, or you may find yourself on the floor instead of at the table. The Wiesn welcomes millions of visitors, but only has seating for about 100,000, so if you want to sit, especially on busy weekend evenings, it’s imperative to arrive early—the gates open at 10am—and claim your space.

Christkindlmarkt. Every evening at 5:30pm, classic Christmas music bellows throughout the Christmas market on seasonally lit Marienplatz. You may even catch a glimpse of the real St. Nick. Traditionally runs from late November to Christmas Eve.

The creative side of Munich

Munich – The beautiful Bavarian capital simply cannot get rid of its slightly kitsch reputation. But Munich is so much more than Lederhosen, pretzels and Oktoberfest. The city also attracts a lot of creative people. Discover ten special places and experiences. We show you what to do in Munich.

Bahnwärter Thiel – Loud and Colourful

Clubbing and event location

Bahnwärter Thiel is the epitome of Munich ‘s alternative scene. On the site of the former slaughterhouse, sprayed shipping containers pile up to form an entrance, hiding behind them a world of its own. A discarded railway wagon becomes a bar, old containers become Munich’s most legendary techno club. Under the shabby silver disco ball a young scene meets here on weekends . Some of party-goers actually live in campers right behind the club. The collective that runs the Bahnwärter Thiel also organizes festivals, concerts and other great events in the city. One of their project is the Alte Utting , an old decommissioned steam boat that has now found its last anchorage on a disused drawbridge crossing a main road. The ship is now a cool scene bar with live events.

Surrounded by urban gardens, cosy sitting areas, relaxed music, ice-cold drinks

Haidhausen – where Art and Everyday Meet

Cool neighbourhood with a craft beer brewery

For a while, Haidhausen was considered Munich’s shabby neighbourhood, but that has changed considerably in recent decades. The wide boulevards, large squares and old buildings in the “French Quarter”, as Haidhausen is called because of its French street names, have long been renovated. Cafés and boutiques have moved in. Famous artists perform in the old Muffatwerk  power station on the Isar river, the  Müllersche Volksbad  in art nouveau style right next door is without doubt Munich’s most beautiful swimming pool . Certainly the Gasteig as a cultural centre including the philharmonic orchestra and the municipal library has contributed to the fact that one wants to get off at every corner when taking the tram through Haidhausen. Oh, and if you are heading to Haidhausen and pass the Kulturstrand on the Corneliusbrücke, make sure to stop for a drink.

What to do in Munich: Eat and drink in a local brewery

Our personal tip for Haidhausen is in the Weissenburger Strasse, where Werner Schuegraf has fulfilled his dream after years of working as a brewer, by opening his own craft beer brewery, Hopfenhäcker . He has been brewing his six different creations in his backyard since 2016. In the front, smoky bratwurst and ribs are served with homemade mustard and bread in the restaurant, Meisterstück .  Individual Bavarian delicacies are paired with different beers to create an unconventional, creative and incredibly tasty multi-course menu.

Werksviertel Mitte – A Playground for Creative People

Concerts, lofts, shops & bars

In 1949, the newly founded Pfanni company set up its plant directly behind Munich’s Ostbahnhof in the east of the city. Behind the walls of these orange-coloured industrial blocks, ready-to-cook mashed potatoes and dumplings were produced, which were an integral part of every household in the 1960s. When Pfanni moved its production to Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in 1996, the old factory became a notorious party location. But since 2017, an initiative has taken over the fallow land. Since then, loft apartments and artists’ studios have moved into the old building containers in the Werksviertel-Mitte , casual rooftop bars invite visitors to discover the ContainerCollective , concerts and musicals fill the former warehouses with life. An amazing spot and one of the special places of Munich.

Want to open a hairdresser just for children or rear your own sheep on the roof? In the Werksviertel Mitte there are no limits to creativity. The latest project in this  lively city quarter is the world’s largest mobile Ferris wheel. Discover the city from a height of 78 meters while enjoying a traditional Bavarian Weisswurst breakfast of veal sausages, pretzels, sweet mustard and beer.

View of the Werksviertel Mitte in Munich at night

Glockenbachviertel & Gärtnerplatz – Bar Hopping at it’s Best

Bars & LGBTQ Community

The Glockenbachviertel is Munich’s most famous trendy neighbourhood . And rightly so. The many renovated old buildings, countless pubs and bars – the quarter is one of the most beautiful (and expensive!) in Munich, not only in terms of nightlife. Old-established bars – such as the roof terrace of the Hotel Deutsche Eiche – are constantly being joined by innovative new places – most recently, for example, the soda bar Wolf’s Farmacy . The rooftop bar of the hotel The Flushing Meadows has also quickly established itself as a popular meeting place in the area. The beautiful Gärtnerplatz, which is located in the Glockenbachviertel nearby, is often considered to be one of the most beautiful and sociable places in the area, with many nice bars, shops and cafés. It is also the home of Munich’s LGTB community .

Street Art – Things You Didn’t Expect in Munich

Graffiti tour

Where did the German street art scene originate? No, not in Berlin. German street art started in 1985 in Geltendorf, Munich, where a group of teenagers sprayed a whole train at night. Graffiti by the artists of that time still adorn the bridges and house walls of Munich today, and “Loomix” and his friends have long since become celebrities in the worldwide street art scene. Even if there are not many empty spaces available today, many original works can be seen at the notorious Halls of Fame in Dachauer Strasse, under the Donnersbergerbrücke bridge, in Untergiesing under the Brudermühlbrücke bridge or Alter Viehhof on Tumblinger Strasse.

Obviously, it’s best to experience this urban art with someone who has been part of the scene from the beginning and knows his way around. Martin Arz is that guide . An author and artist, he raves passionately about the street art scene in Munich, knows the famous sprayers personally and reveals where their most beautiful works can be found. A alternative, exciting and colourful view of a different Munich.

You don't know hat to do in Munich? How about a Street Art Tour?

A street art tour can be booked via München Safari . Martin Arz has also published a book about the streetart scene in Munich called Munich Walls .

Kino, Mond und Sterne – Munich’s Green Oase

outdoor events

Munich is green! Not only at the Isar and the English Garden, everywhere in the city small and large natural oases invite you to stay – also some rooftops like at the Deutsches Museum . One of our favorites is the beautiful Westpark, which attracts many people with a popular outdoor event: the open-air cinema Kino, Mond & Sterne . People spread out their picnic blankets and camping chairs in the circular staircase area, ordering delicious international street food from one of the food trucks. Blockbusters and independent films are shown, and also the great film tours of Moving Adventures Media with a focus on outdoor films. This is a great outdoor event under the starry spring skies.

Open-air cinema plays in the background and you can see the many people who watch the spectacle with enthusiasm. One of the special places in Munich.

Thanks to Munich’s location in the south of Germany, the city’s parks and rooftop bars can be enjoyed from spring through to autumn. Such special places in Munich.

Tollwood festivals – there’s always something to celebrate.

Art & theatre

Munich is the city of festivals ! A particularly popular one of is the Tollwood Festival , organized twice a year. The summer version takes place in the Olympiapark , while in winter the festival tents are pitched for four weeks at the Theresienwiese fairgrounds for a Christmas market. The programme is similar for both festivals and is based on three themes: The Market of Ideas presents projects which encourage visitors to think and participate. There are, for example, fictitious shops or games that draw attention to racism and other problems of society. The diverse and exclusively organic food at the Tollwood Festival also attracts a lot of visitors.

There is also a strong cultural programme consisting of music, theatre, visual arts and all kinds of performances . From jazz concerts to theatre groups on stilts, anything is possible here. A great festival – and many events are free of charge.

Tollywood Festival is one of special places Munich and an unforgettable event

Hey Minga-Tours – En Route With the Locals

City tours by VW bus

The people of Munich like to affectionately call their city by its Bavarian dialect name of  Minga . And they want to show it to visitors. That’s why the young guides from Hey Minga cruise the streets in iconic VW buses and show tourists and locals the most delightful corners of Munich, beyond the main tourist sights. Even if you already know the city quite well, it’s possible to learn a lot of new things on the tour . It probably brings you to the special places Munich. Tours start in Werksviertel Mitte, and end at Bahnwärter Thiel or in Untergiesing

Museum of Urban and Contemporary Art – Banksy fans listen up

Germany’s first museum for street art opened at the end of 2016 – in the heart of Munich’s city centre. From the outside, murals point the way to the Museum of Urban and Contemporary Art (MUCA) . The privately initiated exhibition may (still) be relatively small, but there are some real highlights for street art fans. It’s definitely one of the special places in Munich. A couple years back, for example, the museum showed the most works by Banksy of any gallery or museum in Germany, and lovers of large-format portrait photography will also get their money’s worth.

The exhibitions change frequently, but the website informs guests about current and upcoming projects. Young and old can get involved in creative workshops as well. A insider tip: Make sure you stop by the museum’s restaurant.

The Olympic Tower – A Spectacular View from Above

In the north of Munich, on the site of the Olympic park, the television tower rises almost 300m into the sky. Visitors can take an elevator to the open viewing platform at 190 metres. From this bird’s eye view, the superbly designed Olympic Park and the city beyond take on a new level. The Olympic Village, the site of the infamous hostage crisis during the 1972 games, is also visible. A pavilion in the park commemorates the victims and offers information on the tragic event. Those who wish can dine in the Olympic Tower in the revolving restaurant 181 with a panoramic view of Munich and then relax in the park or on a boat on the Olympic lake. One of the special Places and experiences in Munich.

More about munich, germany, why visit munich.

Munich has a vast selection of museums to delight visitors. Ranging from art to technology, several of these cultural sites are found in the city’s art district, the Kunstareal. Enriching experiences await in Munich.

residenz museum

Residenz Museum

The Residenz Museum was once the palace of Bavaria’s Wittelsbach monarchs from 1508 until WWI. Today, it’s considered one of the best palace museums in all of Europe. Walk the expansive halls of the palace complex, admiring the antique statues and detailed portraits of regal figureheads.

Deutsches Museum

Founded in 1903, the Deutsches Museum is the largest museum of science and technology in the world. Whether you’re intrigued by the laws of physics or amazed by the cosmos, this is a fascinating place to visit. Our local experts note that English language guided tours are available with advance booking.

Old Picture Gallery

Visit this massive facility dedicated to displaying some of the world’s most impressive artistic masterpieces. The architecture of the gallery is modeled on the Renaissance palaces of Venice, making it equally as impressive as the artwork it contains. Stroll the halls of this grand gallery if you have some extra time in Munich.

BMW Welt and Museum

Lovers of this German-made automobile will be delighted to find this museum dedicated to all things BMW. Visitors will see an array of vehicles and motorcycles as well as demonstrations of BMW’s production methods. Tour the museum or vehicle plant and get an inside look into this luxury car brand.

Historic Sites

Munich is awash with historic sites to explore. From the centuries-old food markets, to the city’s iconic squares, there is a certain air of antiquity here. Delve into the past and discover Munich’s unique story.

olympia park 2

Olympia Park

While it appears to be a small space, this complex once served as the stage for the 1972 Olympic Summer Games. Today, Olympia Park (or Olympiapark) draws crowds for concerts, festivals, and sporting events. We also recommend heading to the Olympic Tower (or Olympiaturm) which contains an observation platform where you’ll see a stunning panorama of Munich.

Marienplatz

In the Middle Ages, this public square served as a market place and site for Medieval festivals. Originally known as Schrannen, it was renamed Marienplatz as a way to ask the Virgin Mary to protect the town from a cholera epidemic. While you’re strolling through, be sure to keep an eye (and an ear) out for the Glockenspiel. Dating back to 1907, this quirky clock celebrates Munich’s history as motorized figurines dance, joust and twirl to the chimes. Note that this daily show occurs at 11 a.m., 12 p.m., and 5 p.m. (the 5 p.m. performance doesn’t occur from November-February).

Viktualienmarkt

Discover this sprawling market with historic roots and see why it’s a favorite for foodies. Established in 1807, Viktualienmarkt features over 140 food stalls offering fare like exotic olives, artisan cheeses and decadent truffles. We recommend checking out this haven for gourmet goods.

Dachau Memorial

Nearby Munich is this former concentration camp turned memorial site. Visit the grounds, walk the path of the prisoners, and marvel at the resilience of the human spirit. This is a powerful way to better comprehend Germany’s past.

Things to Do

Though delicious beer and locals donning Lederhosen (leather pants) and Dirndls (traditional dresses) are a draw for those visiting Munich, the city also features high art, cutting-edge cuisine and quaint landscapes. And, with several architectural gems still standing in its Aldstadt (Old Town), Munich has retained its historic landmarks while managing to be quite cosmopolitan. Take a stroll through a sprawling garden or enjoy some gluwhein (mulled wine) at a Christmas Market…there are so many pleasurable ways to enjoy Germany’s capital.

english garden

English Garden

Considered one of the largest urban parks in the world, this public green space is a pleasant way to relax and unwind after a day of touring. Head to the Chinesischen Turm (Chinese Tower), a signature landmark of the park that features an ornate Japanese Teahouse and massive beer garden. Explore this resplendent green oasis while in Munich.

Christmas Market

During the winter holiday season, Munich’s city squares are transformed by Christmas Markets. In Marienplatz, the public plaza is abuzz with advent music, street stalls selling ethnic foods, and an enormous decorated Christmas tree. In nearby Neuhauser Strasse, you’ll also find Germany’s largest manger market dedicated to presenting authentic nativity scenes.

Church of Our Lady

In Munich’s Old Town you’ll find this imposing Gothic cathedral. Visitors to the church are encouraged to climb the church’s south tower, where you’ll get unprecedented views of the city. This sacred space is said to be an iconic symbol standing out amongst Munich’s skyline.

Nymphenburg Palace

This stunning palace and sprawling garden are a show-stopping sight in the northwestern part of the Altstadt. Created initially as a villa for Bavarian Princess Henriette Adelaide of Savoy, this regal compound continued to grow in size and opulence once it was designated to be a summer residence for the rest of the royal family. Franz, Duke of Bavaria and head of the former ruling family, is still a resident in an apartment of this stately palace.

(Minghui.org) Falun Gong practitioners in Germany held an event on Max-Jeseph Platz in front of the Munich Residenz, the former royal palace of the Wittelsbach monarchs of Bavaria, to showcase the beauty of Falun Gong and expose the Chinese Communist Party (CCP)’s persecution of practitioners on March 30, 2024, the Easter holiday. The activity received support from the people passing by, and some Chinese tourists gave a thumbs up to express their appreciation.

Falun Gong practitioners unfurled banners which were printed “Falun Dafa,” “Truthfulness Compassion Forbearance,” “Returning to Traditional Humanity Is the Only Way Out,” and “The Chinese Communist Party harvests organs from living Falun Gong practitioners.” People passing by could easily see the banners at a glance. Some people stopped to talk with practitioners, and many of them signed a petition showing their support for practitioners in their effort to end the persecution in China.

A tourist group from China passed by the information booth that day. Many Chinese people stopped to take photos, and some accepted newspapers. A middle-aged male tourist said to the practitioners: “The Communist Party is the worst. They are almost finished.” Another Chinese tourist gave a thumbs-up to the practitioners.

American college student Charlie and his parents were visiting Munich. After his mother and Charlie signed their signature to show their support for Falun Gong, he commented that he felt bad for the Chinese citizens who didn’t have a voice in their country under dictatorship rule.

The Falun Gong practitioners meditating at the event looked very peaceful to him. “It looks like they are happy. I am not very familiar with Falun Gong, but it seems very interesting,” he said.

He added that Falun Gong seemed very peaceful and healthy when he learned that Falun Gong follows the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance. Falun Gong exercise teaching is free worldwide, he added, “Practitioners shouldn’t be persecuted for just cultivating and meditating. It shows how bad the ruling party is. People should be able to do everything freely.”

After a cool start Saturday morning, temperatures will rebound nicely this weekend with highs in the mid-70s Saturday and mid-80s on Sunday amid plentiful sunshine.

Updated: Thursday, April 11, 7:51 p.m. ET: The first round of the Masters has been suspended due to darkness. Round 1 will resume on Friday at 7:50 a.m. with Round 2 tee times beginning as scheduled at 8 a.m.

Updated: Thursday, April 11, 8:11 a.m. ET: First-round tee times are set to begin at 10:30 a.m. off the first tee due to overnight and morning rain.

After a morning of monitoring strong storms that have affected states from Texas to Florida, Masters officials announced the gates will open to the patrons at 9:30 a.m., and honorary starters Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and Tom Watson will tee off at 10:10, followed by the first tee time in the 89-player field, Jake Knapp and Erik van Rooyen at 10:30.

According to weather.com, thunderstorms are possible around 8:30 a.m., with potentially strong, gusty winds.

Updated: Thursday, April 11, 7 a.m. ET: First-round tee times will be delayed at least an hour because of morning rain. "We continue to monitor the weather closely," read a post from the tournament on X. "Gate openings and tee times have been delayed until further notice. The first round will not begin before 9 a.m."

Updated: Wednesday, April 10 7 p.m. ET : The Masters has issued a weather update, noting that patron admission will be delayed Thursday due to adverse weather conditions expected overnight and into the morning.

"Due to forecasted weather on Thursday, we have decided to delay all gate openings in the morning," the Masters posted on X, formerly Twitter. "All Masters free parking will be closed until further notice while gate openings are delayed. Further updates will be shared no later than 5 a.m. via Masters.com and social channels."

Updated: Wednesday, April 10 10 a.m. ET: AUGUSTA, Ga. – The first round of the 88th Masters Tournament could be affected by inclement weather as dangerous conditions are predicted to arrive early Thursday.

There’s a 90% chance of showers and thunderstorms prior to 1 p.m., with wind gusts of 40-45 mph between 8 a.m. ET and noon. That would create potentially dangerous conditions and push back tee times, possibly bringing Friday into play for the conclusion of Round 1.

Last year’s Masters was also affected by weather, with second-round play pushed to Saturday and third-round play pushed to Sunday, when eventual winner Jon Rahm and co-runner-up Brooks Koepka played 30 holes.

Severe weather began slamming the southern United States on Tuesday night, continued into Wednesday and was expected to reach the Augusta area first thing Thursday.

According to the Masters Tournament weather update:

“A cold front is forecast to bring a band of rain and scattered thunderstorms through the region between 6 a.m.-1 p.m. ET Thursday. Heavy rainfall and occasional wind gusts of 40-45 mph are anticipated over this period. A lull in precipitation should occur behind the cold front between 1-4 p.m. ET before scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms drift back into the region for the late afternoon and evening hours.

“Windy conditions persist Friday under mostly sunny skies as a dry and stable airmass settles into the area. Mostly sunny skies can be expected through the weekend with west to southwesterly winds in the 7-15 mph range.”

  • Thursday: Mostly cloudy with a 90% chance of showers and thunderstorms prior to 1 p.m. ET. Partly cloudy with a 40% chance of showers and isolated thunderstorms after 4 p.m. Forecast rainfall: 1-1 1/2 inches. Wind gusts of 40-45 mph between 8 a.m.-noon. Low: 65F High: 77F Winds: S shifting SW 15-25; gusts 30-35 mph.
  • Friday: Mostly sunny and windy. Noticeably less humid. Low: 54F High: 72F Winds: W 15-20; gusts 30 mph.
  • Saturday: Mostly sunny and warm. Low: 49F High: 78F Winds: WNW turning W 7-15 mph.
  • Sunday: Mostly sunny and warm. Low: 53F High: 84F Winds: W turning SW 7-15 mph.

The Masters has dealt with its share of weather conditions in recent years. The final round of Tiger Woods’ iconic 2019 victory came hours earlier than scheduled to avoid impending storms. Last year’s leaders played 30 holes on Sunday as storms wiped out much of the third round.

This year’s Masters is largely devoid of rainy conditions, with Thursday as the lone exception. According to the official Augusta National weather forecast, there is an 80% chance of showers and thunderstorms on Thursday, with an expected rainfall of 1.00-1.50 inches.

“Isolated light showers are possible Tuesday and Wednesday before rain and thunderstorms arrive early Thursday and continue throughout the morning hours. A cold front is expected to pass through in the early afternoon, with diminishing precipitation chances for the remainder of Thursday. Thunderstorm wind gusts of 40-45 mph will be possible,” the official forecast stated.

Conditions are expected to clear up by Thursday afternoon and stay dry through the rest of the tournament. Here’s a day-by-day breakdown of the official Augusta National weather forecast:

  • Monday: Mostly sunny. Low: 48F High: 79F Winds: S 7-10 mph
  • Tuesday : Cloudy with a 25% chance of light showers. Low: 58F High: 77F Winds: SSE 5-10 mph
  • Wednesday : Cloudy with a 20% chance of light showers during the day and a 70% chance of showers and thunderstorms after midnight. Low: 62F High: 80F Winds: S-SE 10-15, gusts up to 20 mph
  • Thursday : Mostly cloudy with an 80% chance of showers and thunderstorms. Windy. Forecast rainfall: 1.00-1.50” Low: 65F High: 78F Winds: S shifting SW 15-20 gusts up to 30 mph
