Tour Overview

Nageshwar Temple

Located in the heart of the great state of Gujarat is the city of Dwarka (in the Jamnagar District). Revered as one of the more significant destinations on the Chardham Circuit and a gem among the Saptapuris – the seven sacred cities in Hinduism – its history is interwoven with tales of divine legends and ancient splendors. After all, this is the place where Lord Krishna established his golden city – Swarna Dwarka.

In these modern times, pilgrims and travelers converge on this city, drawn by its sacred aura and the legacy of Dwarka Naresh – another name bestowed upon Lord Krishna, the celebrated founder of this city. The unique location of this city, nestled on the pristine western coast of the Okhamandal Peninsula, invites travelers from around the world to embark on a journey of discovery. After taking a suitable rest from your travels, you can start your experience by visiting sacred landmarks like Bet Dwarka, Rukmini Mandir, and the ethereal Nageshwar Jyotirlingam, among others.

And when it comes to the heart and soul of this place, there is no question about what it is. The majestic Dwarkadheesh temple, dedicated to the Lord Krishna, is the center of this place. This temple was crafted by Vajranabha, grandson of the Lord Krishna, and is an epitome of architectural brilliance. Visitors can immerse themselves in the centuries-old traditions and rituals that are still followed at this place, admire the intricacies of its design, and more. Beyond the temple, you will find a serene pathway of 56 steps from the Swarga Dwar that will gently lead you to the calming embrace of the Gomati River.

There is also the Gomti Sangam Ghat for you to visit. It is the perfect place to visit for those seeking deeper spiritual immersion. This is where the Gomti River mingles with the vast sea, offering an opportunity to devotees for a soul-cleansing dip that will purify their souls. Along the river's edge, you will also see ghats that are just waiting for you to explore them. Don't miss out on the opportunity to explore the gamed Chakratirtha Ghat – distinguished for its white stone chakra. If you are traveling here, it would be not surprising if you find yourself drawn to the tranquil of Gomti Kund and the numerous intimate shrines that can be found here.

Now, as the day winds down, we would encourage you to take a stroll through the ghats. There is a unique magic in taking a magic boat ride over the placid Gomati. If you are one of the many who are enjoying a ride on river Gomti, you will be mesmerized by the view of Dwarka's skyline.

From Myth To Reality: Exploring The Sunken City Of Dwarka In Modern India

The majestic Dwarkadhish Temple stands tall along the confluence of the Gomti River and the Arabian Sea in Gujarat’s Dwarka district. While the exquisite temple dedicated to Lord Krisha, dating back over 2,500 years, attracts tourists for its intricate carvings and historical as well as religious importance, the ancient city of Dwarka lies submerged underwater.

Archaeological expeditions carried out in the past and recent excavations by underwater archaeologists affirm the existence of the ancient city of Dwarka, believed to be submerged centuries ago with the rise in sea level. According to mythology, the underwater city of Dwarka is said to be the abode of Lord Krishna, which got submerged along with its inhabitants as he left the earth.

Archaeological marvel: Delve into the history of Dwarka, India’s underwater city

Dwarka underwater - submerged city

Various historical reports suggest that the massive city spanned approximately 84 km near the confluence of the Gomti River and the Arabian Sea. Multiple underwater excavations conducted in the past have revealed ancient artefacts such as blocks and pillars dating back to the era between 3000 and 1500 BC, or the Middle Ages, as the exact timeline is still debatable. The National Institute of Oceanography reports two excavations, one in 1963 by the Deccan College Pune and the other between 1979 and 1980 by the Archeological Survey of India.

Excavators have also discovered a fortified foundation believed to be the base of the fort walls, and stone anchors suggesting trade relations between India and Arabic regions, probably between the 15th and 18th centuries.

Translating to ‘gate’ or ‘door’ in Sanskrit, the “ancient port city could have been a gate for foreign sailors who arrived in India,” writes UNESCO .

India’s ancient past: How to reach and explore the submerged city of Dwarka

Shree Dwarkadhish Krishna Temple

The nearest airport to the modern city of Dwarka is in Porbandar, approximately 110 km away, and the city has its railway station, approximately 2 km from the centre. The best time to visit is between November and February for pleasant weather, or in August to witness Janmashthami celebrations.

Discover the remnants of the lost city Dwarka by Scuba-diving

Photo of Anila Kopparapu

We have read, heard so much about Dwarka, the land where Krishna grew up and later ruled. Could you have imagined that you can actually get to see the remnants of this lost city we have heard so much about? Well, now you can.

Scuba diving along the waters off the coast of Dwarka and the island that is called ‘Beyt Dwarka’, you can get to see some of the remains of the ancient Dwarka that were only recently excavated. Beyt Dwarka is slightly off the coast of Dwarka in Gujarat where remains of the ancient Dwarka have supposedly been found through some archeological expeditions that began in the recent past. The beaches of these two towns have recently begun allowing this activity for visitors to explore the remains.

While archeologists claim that these remains very much belong to the lost, submerged Dwarka of the Mahabharata, there is still much skepticism about the actual origins of them. But who wouldn’t like to take a little tour of this submerged remains while swimming through the blue ocean waters? A thrilling water sport and amazing tour through really ancient history, a brush with our mythology – that would definitely be one amazing experience!

All about the Dwarka scuba diving experience:

Once you reach the place, there are some companies that teach you and get you ready for the scuba-diving experience that the place has to offer. You need to train with them and then go for it once you think you are ready. It is economical to go in a group but going solo works well too.

Along with many submerged architectural structures that you will find on the lands of the sea bed here, there are corals reefs beautifully spread out on the bed. The waters are clear here, especially since we get to go a little into the ocean for the diving. You can also get to spot sea animals such as dolphins, turtles, octopus and starfish that make the whole trip worth it.

Here are some of the agencies that can help you with your scuba diving activity – Golden Dwarka , Arthur Scuba diving centre

Other activities you can do while you in Dwarka:

How to get there

By air : The nearest airport is the Porbandar airport which is about 96 kms away from Dwarka. Yet another airport is the Jamnagar airport which is farther, at about 115 kms.

Getting around in Dwarka

For tourists, the government of Dwarka has got this bus facility that’s called the ‘Dwarka Darshan’ which charges you quite less to give a complete tour of the town. Along with that, you can hire a cab locally as well. The local buses are not totally reliable but you can give them a try as well.

Accommodation

Dwarka has got plenty of places to stay for its visitors. Since Beyt Dwarka is only a 45-minute drive away from Dwarka staying here is a good option even if your diving site is in Beyt Dwarka. Here are two places you can stay at while you are here. Hotel Meera , Mercure Dwarka and you can look up for more places to stay in Dwarka here .
