Editor's note: This page includes information about the Discover it Miles that is not currently available on The Points Guy and may be out of date.

Not all travel expenses can be covered by traditional credit card points or airline miles. You need to bolster your loyalty portfolio with cash back rewards or a cash equivalent currency that can cover non-travel expenses. Enter the Discover it Miles credit card.

Although this card calls its currency miles, it doesn't earn miles in the traditional sense of airline miles. The miles have a fixed value and can be redeemed for everything from travel to cash back to Amazon purchases and more.

So how exactly do you go about redeeming them? Here's a step-by-step guide for using your Discover it Miles.

Discover it Miles overview

The Discover it Miles is a no-annual-fee credit card that earns unlimited 1.5x miles on all purchases. As a bonus, Discover will match all the miles you earn in the first year, with no cap. In other words, you'll earn a respectable 3x miles on all purchases in the first year, which is equivalent to 3% cash back. These miles never expire and are worth 1 cent each, regardless of how you redeem them.

The process to redeem Discover it Miles is as simple as earning them. After you log in to your Discover account, you'll see your rewards total on the dashboard's right side.

After selecting "ways to redeem," you'll see your total available points and three redemption options:

  • Travel credit

Pay with rewards

Redeem on travel

Discover doesn't have any airline or hotel transfer partners . Instead, you could redeem miles to offset recent travel purchases, as well as some non-travel purchases. This is useful for families who often travel during peak holiday seasons and can't always get award availability to line up with their schedules.

With a few simple clicks, you can use the miles to "erase" the cost of recognized travel purchases made within the last 180 days. After selecting the purchase you'd like to offset, you'll get a statement credit for the amount you spent. Unlike some similar cards, there is no minimum redemption.

Any purchase that codes as travel is eligible for this type of redemption, whether it's an Uber ride, flight or Airbnb booking. You do not need to book your travel through a specific portal for it to qualify.

In response to the pandemic, Discover expanded the qualifying category to allow redemptions for certain non-travel purchases. Purchases that can be reimbursed now include those made at restaurants and gas stations . You'll see the eligible non-travel purchases listed on the same page as your travel purchases.

Redeem for cash back

Because Discover miles are worth one cent each, no matter how you redeem them, the best option would be to use them for cash and use as needed. This way, you could pay for your travel and dining purchases with a credit card that earns additional rewards on those purchases.

The cash back redemption option is straightforward, again with no minimum redemption amount. The funds will be deposited directly into your bank account within three business days.

If you want to redeem your miles toward shopping online, you can pay with miles at checkout on Amazon and PayPal. All you need to do is link your Discover card to your accounts and then you'll be able to use miles on the checkout page at the same rate of 1 cent each.

As is the case with other issuers , from time to time, Amazon offers cardholders discounts like 20% off when you redeem at least one Discover mile.

Bottom line

You're not going to find a more straightforward path to earning cash back and making hassle-free redemptions than with the Discover it Miles Card. Earning 3x miles on all purchases in the first year (once your miles are matched), equates to 3% cash back. That's the best cash rewards earning rate from any credit card out there.

You won't get perks like dining credits or automatic elite status as you do with the top rewards credit cards . However, the Discover it Miles card offers some other valuable benefits, such as no foreign transaction fees and no fee on your first late payment. This card is worth a look, especially if you have some big expenses coming up. Discover it Miles could save you money.

How do we choose the best overall card?

In determining which cards were worthy of “Best Overall” distinction on marketplace pages, our editorial team reviewed the cards currently available on each page and narrowed the list of candidates to only those cards that either:

  • A) had received a minimum 4.0-star overall rating in their primary scoring category based on our proprietary card rating methodology , or
  • B) were currently the highest-rated card on the page.

We then surveyed an internal panel of expert credit card writers and editors as to which card from the candidate list was most deserving of a “Best Overall” distinction. The winner was selected based on popular vote.

In the news: Capital One-Discover merger

How we assess the best discover credit cards.

Discover is both a credit card issuer and a credit card network. It’s one of the four largest credit card networks in the country. As a network, Discover processes and verifies transactions among merchants, customers and banks, so unlike other major credit card networks like Visa and Mastercard, it doesn’t need to partner with other companies to offer you a line of credit.

As a credit card network, Discover has a 99 percent acceptance rate from merchants in the U.S., but you may notice that fewer stores abroad accept your Discover credit card. Regardless, Discover offers a variety of credit cards with high customer satisfaction ratings and few fees that make them appealing to consumers.

Bankrate Insight

Discover has a track record of excellent customer service satisfaction, earning top marks in J.D. Power’s 2023 U.S. Credit Card Satisfaction Study , with a score of 629 out of 1,000 points, falling just behind American Express and tying Bank of America.

Pros and cons of Discover credit cards

Welcome offer: We can’t highlight this enough — Discover will match your cash back or miles rewards at the end of your first year with the card, essentially doubling your earnings, with its Cashback Match program .

Low redemption minimum: You can redeem your rewards starting at $.01 or 1 mile, giving you more flexibility in redemption options.

High customer satisfaction : Discover scored high in the most recent J.D. Power’s U.S. Credit Card Satisfaction Study, showing it has terrific customer service.

Limited travel rewards: Discover’s dedicated travel card earns 1.5X miles on purchases — falling short of the many other travel rewards cards that earn higher rewards rates on travel.

Earning caps : Higher cash back earning categories come with spending caps that cardholders need to watch out for.

Lower merchant acceptance : Discover isn’t accepted by as many merchants worldwide as cards in the largest two networks, Visa and Mastercard.

Several Discover cards are available, and the one you choose should be based on your financial goals and needs. For example, students with little or no credit history might choose one of Discover's student credit cards . If you need to work on your credit, Discover offers secured cards for credit-builders, and if you’re a cash back enthusiast, you might consider a Discover cash back card .

To help decide which card would fit your needs best, check out our tips below.

How to choose the best Discover card

Are you willing to activate bonus categories every quarter.

Discover’s elevated 5 percent cash back categories rotate and must be activated every quarter on up to $1,500 in combined spending and then 1 percent, so you need to stay on top of your credit card account. If you don’t want to activate categories, consider Discover’s Chrome cards , which offer lower rewards rates but don’t require activation.

Do you meet the card's credit score requirements?

Make sure you meet the credit score requirements for the card you want, which can be a significant factor in your application. For the Discover it® Cash Back , we recommend that people have good credit , very good credit or excellent credit scores before applying. If your score is fair, you might consider the Discover it® Secured Credit Card, while students with minimal or no credit history can pick one of Discover’s student credit cards. You can use Bankrate’s CardMatch™ tool to check for any prequalified offers.

How much cash back do you want?

If you activate the bonus category each quarter and then meet the $1,500 cap for 5 percent cash back every quarter when you enroll (then 1 percent cash back), you could get $300 in cash back for the year, plus another $300 at the end of your first year with the Discover it® Cash Back. That’s a 10 percent return for your spending for the first year, which is a lot more than what other issuers offer. Just make sure you’re maximizing your spending in the bonus categories and not skewing your spending toward purchases you wouldn’t make.

Will you use the APR offer?

Many of the Discover cards have an introductory APR for purchases that can range between six to 15 months. If you want to finance a big-ticket item or transfer a balance, a Discover card with a lengthy intro APR offer might help you temporarily avoid interest charges.

Will you take advantage of the perks?

Discover offers various no-annual-fee credit cards that come with the standard card features, such as Zero fraud liability, FICO credit score access, and Account alerts and freezing. Discover’s rewards program , high customer satisfaction scores and competitive welcome offers also make these credit cards worth a look. On top of that, Discover cards are low on fees. You won't pay foreign transaction fees or a penalty APR. Plus, there's no fee on your first late payment (up to $41 afterward).

Still unsure if a Discover credit card is right for you? Check out our Credit Card Spender Type Tool where you can get personalized credit card recommendations based on your credit score, spending habits and daily needs.

Here’s what credit card expert Nouri Zarrugh has to say about his experience with Discover and a lesser-known card feature that helped him:

“One of the downsides of carrying a wallet full of cards and constantly switching back and forth between them, like I do, is that payment due dates can be tough to juggle. So I’ve paid more in late fees than I care to admit. That’s why I love Discover’s forgiving late fee policy. Mistakes happen, and when I missed my Discover card’s due date (the first and only time), I was so grateful I had a second chance to get things sorted.” — Nouri Zarrugh, Senior Editor, Credit Cards

This is a great perk to be aware of, even if you’re an experienced cardholder. You should also keep these tips in mind to avoid interest charges, inconvenience and credit card debt .

  • Use alternative payment abroad. Though they charge no foreign transaction fee, Discover cards aren’t as widely accepted as cards on the Visa or Mastercard network, so you'll need a backup payment method.
  • Don’t spend just to earn rewards. A Discover rewards card may tempt you to spend more than you otherwise would to take advantage of rotating bonus categories.
  • Don’t let interest eat into rewards. If you're paying interest on your balance, it won't matter how much cash back you earn. Paying interest will almost certainly negate the value of any rewards you earn.

What people say about Discover credit cards

A common question that many people have with credit cards is how high their credit limit will be. Based on cardholder experiences on Reddit, there’s a lot of room for growth with Discover. A few users who started with modest limits between $200 and $500 on the Discover it® Secured Credit Card  got a limit increase after a few years to over $5,000 on an unsecured Discover card.

Some cardholders with a solid credit history started with a credit limit in the thousands on their unsecured Discover card. One Reddit user shared how easy it was to get a credit limit increase with Discover:

“Discover is one of the easiest lenders to grow a large limit with if you've got a sufficiently strong profile. They also don't put any restrictions on the frequency of soft pull [credit limit increases] where most other lenders require (say) 6 months between them, so if one is aggressive, they have the potential to grow their Discover limit relatively quickly [with responsible use].” — Reddit User

Regardless of issuer, you’ll need to demonstrate positive credit habits to have a good chance at a credit limit increase, like making on-time payments and keeping your credit utilization low. It’s also good to remember that these increases take time, so don’t get discouraged if you start with a low limit.

When evaluating the best Discover credit cards, we take into account several factors, including how cards score in our proprietary card rating system and whether they offer features that fit the priorities of a diverse group of cardholders, from earning rewards to scoring a large sign-up bonus to saving on interest.

We analyzed over 250 of the most popular credit cards and selected standouts that Discover offers. We scored each card based on the factors most relevant to its primary category, including its rewards rate, estimated annual earnings, intro APR period, ongoing APR, perks and more to determine whether it belonged in this month’s roundup.

Here are some of the key factors that we considered:

Solid rewards value

Since many cardholders are eager to earn rewards, a key criteria for a card’s inclusion in our list is whether it offers impressive rewards value. This includes a card’s average rewards rate, estimated annual rewards earnings, sign-up bonus value and reward redemption value.

To estimate a card’s average annual rewards earnings, we calculate its average rewards rate based on how much it earns in different bonus categories, as well as how closely those categories match the average person’s spending habits. In other words: Does the card earn rewards at a high rate in the most popular spending categories?

We use consumer spending data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) to get a reliable third-party measure of people’s spending habits. The most recent BLS data estimates average total spending in 2021 was $66,928 per consumer. We then narrow our focus to which purchases are likely to be put on a credit card and earn rewards, subtracting expenditures like housing, vehicle purchases and education. This gives us a total “chargeable” annual spend of around $22,500.

This includes the following spending by category:

  • Groceries: $5,200
  • Dining out: $3,000
  • Entertainment: $2,500
  • Gas: $2,100
  • Apparel and services: $1,700

Using this data, we assign a weighting to each of a card’s bonus categories. For example, a card’s grocery rewards rate receives a 23 percent weighting based on how much of the average person’s budget is spent on groceries. We also estimate the redemption value of points or miles from various issuer, airline and hotel rewards programs.

This weighting and rewards valuation allows us to estimate a card’s average annual rewards earnings — how many points or miles you’d earn with a given card if your spending was about average and you used the card for all of your purchases — as well as what those points are worth. We also use point valuations to determine a card’s sign-up bonus value

With these calculations complete, we assign each card a score based on how its average rewards earnings, sign-up bonus value, rewards rate and redemption value stack up against other cards in its primary category.

The better these values, the higher its score will be, making it more worthy of inclusion in our list and increasing its potential ranking.

Reasonable fees and APR

We also rate all cards based on how their ongoing average APR compares to the average APR you’ll find other cards in their primary category. However, the impact of an especially high or low APR on a card’s overall score depends on its primary category.

For rewards-earning cards, this factor has only a minor influence on the card’s score and whether the card is included in our list, since rewards card users generally try to avoid carrying a balance. That said, rewards-earning cards may get a solid boost in score and be more worthy of inclusion in our list if they also offer an intro APR on balance transfers or new purchases, since such offers aren’t always present on these cards.

Interest rates and intro APR offers play a much larger role in a card’s score and whether it’s included in our list when the card is designed specifically for users looking to save on interest charges, such as dedicated balance transfer or low-interest cards.

Other fees considered include cash advance and late payment fees, along with penalty APRs.

Flexibility and perks

Along with rewards value and cost, we consider other factors that could give cards great long-term value, like flexible rewards redemption and especially unique and valuable perks.

We rate rewards-earning cards based on the restrictions they impose on earning and redeeming rewards and consider this when deciding on a card’s inclusion in our list.

These restrictions could include only allowing users to earn a high rewards rate on a small amount of spending or requiring users to meet a certain earning threshold before they can redeem rewards. We also examine whether points are worth less when you opt for some redemption options over others and whether a card gives you the flexibility to transfer rewards to airline and hotel partners.

We also evaluate each card’s perks based on their value, usefulness and uniqueness. Cards that offer top-tier benefits like airport lounge access or travel credits are likely to stand out, but we also aim to highlight cards that offer valuable under-the-radar perks, like cellphone protection or one-off credits for everyday expenses like dining and streaming services.

[ Return to summary ]

One of CNBC Select's top picks for the best balance transfer credit cards, the Discover it Balance Transfer is both a debt consolidation tool and a rewards card.

Discover will match the cash back you earn during the first year with no minimum spending requirement or cap on the match.

Notable perks

The Discover it Balance Transfer stands out for offering one of the longest interest-free intro periods: 0% introductory APR for 18 months on balance transfers (after, 17.24% - 28.24% variable APR) .  There is a 3% intro balance transfer fee on balances transferred by January 10, 2024, then up to 5% on future balance transfers (see terms). The card also comes with a 0% introductory APR on new purchases for six months from account opening (after, 17.24% to 28.24% variable APR).

Outside of these features, the card is very similar to the standard Discover it Cash Back. It offers Social Security number monitoring and free access to your FICO score.

While the Discover it Miles doesn't offer premium perks like airport lounge access or TSA PreCheck statement credits, it can be a solid choice for travelers who prefer their rewards as simple as possible.

  • 1.5X miles on every dollar of every purchase.

Discover will match all of the miles you earn during the first year with no minimum spending requirement or cap on the match.

You can use miles to "erase" eligible travel transactions, including restaurant and gas station  purchases, from the last 180 days, redeem them for cash back or redeem them when checking out on PayPal . The miles never expire and there are no complicated transfer partners, blackout dates or travel portals to navigate through.

The card also has an introductory 0% APR offer for 15 months on purchases and balance transfers , then a 18.24% - 28.24% variable APR (3% intro balance transfer fee, 5% balance transfer fee on future transfers, see terms ). Plus, cardholders have free access to their FICO credit score, as well as online privacy protection.

The Discover it Secured Credit Card is a great choice for those building or rebuilding their credit and offers a clear path to eventually upgrade to an unsecured card. Plus, like all Discover cards, it comes with an attractive welcome offer.

  • 2% cash back at Gas Stations and Restaurants on up to $1,000 in combined purchases each quarter, automatically.

As with its unsecured cards , Discover gives you a dollar-to-dollar match of all the cash back you earn with the Discover it Secured at the end of your first year.

The Discover it Secured Credit Card requires a $200 minimum security deposit upon account opening, but after seven months, there's an automatic review to see if you can be moved to an unsecured card, at which point your deposit will be returned.

Cardholders can monitor the result of their credit-building efforts through Discover's Credit Scorecard. This feature provides access to the user's FICO Score with TransUnion. On top of that, there's an option to activate free alerts to track hard inquiries and new accounts that appear on your Experian credit report.

The Discover it Student Cash Back is a starter credit card for college students. If you use it responsibly, it can help you establish healthy credit habits, improve your scores and earn cash-back rewards while you're at it.

The Discover it Student Cash Back doesn't require a credit score to apply. It also offers an introductory 0% APR on new purchases for the first six months, which can be useful for financing textbooks or dorm room essentials. After the introductory period, an 18.24% - 27.24% variable APR applies.

Cardholders also get access to other Discover card benefits, such as online privacy protection, Social Security number alerts and credit score updates.

Which Discover card is easier to get?

The Discover it Secured Credit Card might be easier to qualify for since it's designed for cardholders building or rebuilding their credit.

Is a Discover card worth having?

A Discover credit card can be worth it for people who want to earn rewards without annual fees or complicated rewards systems.

How many Discover cards can you have?

Discover allows cardholders to have a maximum of two different Discover credit cards at a time.

Is a Discover card a Visa?

Discover credit cards are not Visa cards. Visa is a payment network, while Discover is both a card issuer and a payment network processing cardholders' transactions.

Bottom line

Discover offers a suite of credit cards with easy-to-earn rewards and no annual fees. No matter your credit profile or the kind of card you're looking for, you're likely to find a Discover card worth considering. That said, it's always wise to compare multiple cards to determine the best match, so look into cards from other issuers as well before applying.

Best Discover Credit Cards of June 2024

Discover's credit cards don't charge annual fees and offer new cardholders a unique bonus in which the issuer matches all rewards earned in the first year. Whether any of that will change if Discover is bought by Capital One is unclear. But regardless, you'll still be able to use your Discover card in nearly as many places in the U.S. as Visa and Mastercard, although acceptance internationally is quite limited. These are our favorite Discover credit cards.

Find the right credit card for you..

Whether you want to pay less interest or earn more rewards, the right card's out there. Just answer a few questions and we'll narrow the search for you.

Balance transfers

College students + simplicity, college students + bonus rewards, building or rebuilding credit.

In February 2024, Capital One announced that it had reached a deal to acquire Discover. Capital One has not offered details about what that might mean for Discover's lineup of credit cards , but its has said that the Discover brand will continue. The deal must be approved by banking regulators and shareholders before it can go through.

BEST DISCOVER CREDIT CARDS

Before applying, confirm details on the issuer’s website.

Discover it® Cash Back

Our pick for: Cash back

The Discover it® Cash Back earns bonus cash back in quarterly categories that you activate. In past years, those categories have included common spending areas like grocery stores, restaurants, gas stations and specific major retailers. Category activation can be a hassle, but if your spending aligns with those categories (and for most households, it probably will), you can rake in serious rewards. You also get the issuer's signature "cash-back match" bonus in your first year. Read our review.

Discover it® Chrome

Our pick for: Balance transfers

The Discover it® Chrome doesn't have rotating categories like some of Discover's better-known cards. Instead, it gives you extra rewards at gas stations and restaurants, with no activation required, plus an outstanding balance transfer offer. You get the "cash-back match" bonus in your first year, too. Read our review.

Discover it® Miles

Our pick for: Travel

The Discover it® Miles is the rare travel credit card that lets you redeem your rewards for travel or for cash back at the same rate. (Also rare among travel cards is its intro APR period for balance transfers.) You earn unlimited 1.5 miles per dollar spent on purchases, and the miles are generally worth 1 cent apiece — that's a solid rate for a card with no annual fee. As with other Discover cards, this one matches the rewards you earn in your first year. Read our review.

Discover it® Balance Transfer

What makes the Discover it® Balance Transfer stand out from other balance-transfer cards is its ongoing cash-back rewards, which give you a great reason to keep using the card regularly even after its introductory APR period ends. Read our review.

Discover it® Student Chrome

Our pick for: College students + simplicity

Simplicity makes the Discover it® Student Chrome a standout for students searching for their first credit card. You'll earn bonus cash back at restaurants and gas stations with no activation required and no rotating categories to keep track of. Read our review.

Discover it® Student Cash Back

Our pick for: College students + bonus rewards

The Discover it® Student Cash Back gives students the same excellent rewards as the regular Discover it® Cash Back — notably, bonus cash back in rotating categories that you must activate. Activating and tracking categories might be too much of a hassle for some students brand new to credit cards, but if you're up for a little work, the rewards can be handsome. Read our review.

Discover it® Secured Credit Card

Our pick for: Building or rebuilding credit

Like other secured credit cards for people building or rebuilding credit, the Discover it® Secured Credit Card requires a cash security deposit. Unlike most others, it offers rewards. But what really makes it stand out from the competition is its upgrade possibilities. The issuer has a process in place for automatically reviewing accounts for possible transition to an unsecured card. Read our review.

Other cards issued by Discover

NHL® Discover it® — the official credit card of the National Hockey League, this card operates just like the Discover it® Cash Back but also offers special discounts for hockey fans.

OTHER RESOURCES

What credit score do you need to get a discover card .

Discover's standard rewards credit cards require good credit to qualify, which is generally defined as having a credit score of 690 or better. But your credit score is just one factor that card issuers typically consider in evaluating applications; others include your income, credit utilization , the number of credit cards you already have, and major recurring expenses like your rent or mortgage.

Discover also offers cards designed for people who are building or rebuilding credit:

Students new to credit may qualify for the Discover it® Student Cash Back or the Discover it® Student Chrome . Neither of these cards requires a FICO score history.

The Discover it® Secured Credit Card is also an option. Like other secured cards, it requires a cash security deposit. But Discover also offers a clear upgrade process and automatic account reviews. After at least seven months of on-time payments, Discover may return your deposit and move you to a regular card.

What are the interest rates on Discover credit cards?

As is the case with many card issuers, the ongoing interest rates on Discover credit cards can vary widely — in some cases by 10 percentage points or more. In general, the better your creditworthiness, the better the chance you'll qualify for a rate at the lower end of the range for a given card.

That said, several Discover cards offer an introductory 0% APR period. They include:

Discover it® Cash Back : 0% intro APR for 15 months on purchases and balance transfers, and then the ongoing APR of 18.24%-28.24% Variable APR .

Discover it® Chrome : 0% intro APR on Purchases for 6 months and 0% intro APR on Balance Transfers for 18 months, and then the ongoing APR of 18.24%-28.24% Variable APR .

Discover it® Miles : 0% intro APR for 15 months on purchases and balance transfers, and then the ongoing APR of 18.24%-28.24% Variable APR .

Discover it® Student Cash Back : 0% intro APR on Purchases for 6 months and 10.99% intro APR on Balance Transfers for 6 months, and then the ongoing APR of 18.24%-27.24% Variable APR .

Discover it® Student Chrome : 0% intro APR on Purchases for 6 months and 10.99% intro APR on Balance Transfers for 6 months, and then the ongoing APR of 18.24%-27.24% Variable APR .

Discover it® Secured Credit Card : 10.99% intro APR on Balance Transfers for 6 months, and then the ongoing APR of 28.24% Variable APR .

What credit limit can I get with a Discover card?

Your credit limit on a Discover card will depend on your individual circumstances; factors that may go into the calculation include your income, your credit score, your total credit utilization, your other available credit and your outstanding debt. Discover won’t set your credit limit until it reviews (and approves) your application.

The exception is the Discover it® Secured Credit Card . As is the case with most secured cards, the security deposit determines your credit limit. So if you put down a deposit of $300, you get a $300 credit limit. The minimum deposit on the Discover it® Secured Credit Card is $200.

What are the benefits of Discover credit cards?

Discover offers a range of benefits. To start with, all Discover cards have no annual fee, and none of them charge foreign transaction fees.

Although the specific earning rates vary by card, all Discover cards earn rewards — cash back, in most cases — with no limit on how much you can earn and no minimum redemption amount. This includes Discover’s secured and student cards.

If Discover has a signature benefit, though, it's the issuer's bonus offer for new cardholders. At the end of your first 12 months after getting a card, Discover will automatically match all the rewards you earned in that first year. So if you earned $350 cash back in that first year, Discover will kick in another $350. If you've earned 41,262 miles with the Discover it® Miles card, Discover will give you 41,262 more miles. Note that the matching bonus comes as a lump sum at the end of the 12 months — Discover doesn't match rewards as you earn them.

Discover also has a fully U.S.-based customer service team, available 24 hours a day. Discover consistently rates in the top tier in customer service surveys for major credit card issuers.

Which Discover card is easiest to get?

The Discover it® Secured Credit Card is the easiest Discover card to get. The security deposit serves as insurance for the issuer in case a cardholder doesn't pay their bill. That reduces the risk, so the issuer can make the card available to people with bad credit or no credit at all. Keep in mind, however, that approval is not guaranteed for any credit card, even a secured card. If you don't have income, for example, or if you have a pending bankruptcy, an issuer might still decline your application.

If you’re a student new to building credit, the Discover it® Student Chrome and Discover it® Student Cash Back are great options, both requiring no deposit, no annual fee and no FICO credit score history.

All three of these cards offer a path to upgrade to a "regular" Discover card as your credit improves.

Will a Discover card help me build credit?

When used responsibly, a Discover card can be a great tool to help you build credit for the first time, or to rebuild a less-than-stellar credit history. Discover regularly reports account information to all three major financial bureaus, helping you establish a history of on-time payments.

Methodology

NerdWallet's credit cards team selects the best credit cards in each category based on overall consumer value. Factors in our evaluation include fees, promotional and ongoing APRs, and sign-up bonuses; for rewards cards, we consider earning and redemption rates, redemption options and redemption difficulty. A single card is eligible to be chosen as among the "best" in multiple categories. Learn how NerdWallet rates credit cards.

Frequently asked questions

Rewards earned with your Discover credit card don't expire as long as your account remains in good standing. If you close your account or it goes inactive for more than 18 months, Discover will apply your rewards as a credit toward any remaining account balance, or send you a check for the remaining rewards value.

Discover doesn’t charge an annual fee on any of its credit cards. One caveat applies to the Discover it® Secured Credit Card . It doesn't have an annual fee, but it does require a refundable security deposit upon opening the account.

Discover credit cards don’t charge foreign transaction fees. This applies not only to the issuer's dedicated travel card, the Discover it® Miles , but also to its cash-back cards. Be aware, though, that Discover's international acceptance is generally lower than that for Visa, Mastercard and American Express.

Once you receive your new Discover card in the mail, you can activate it using the issuer’s online activation page, or by calling Discover customer service at 800-347-2683. Activation information will also be provided in the mailing when your new card arrives.

To cancel your Discover card, call Discover customer service at 800-347-2683. Keep in mind, though, that closing a credit card can hurt your credit score , especially if it’s an older account. Since Discover cards don't charge an annual fee, you may be better off keeping the card open, even if you're not actively using it.

If you do choose to move forward with canceling your Discover card, there’s no fee for doing so, and you don’t have to pay off your full balance before canceling. However, you will have to continue making payments after closing, and interest will continue to accrue until your balance is paid in full.

Discover recommends redeeming all rewards before you cancel your Discover card. Any unredeemed rewards will be applied to your remaining balance as a statement credit.

If you’ve applied for a Discover card and are waiting for notice of approval, you can check the status of your application online or by calling 800-347-3085. In both cases, you’ll need to provide your Social Security Number and ZIP code to see the status of your application.

Compare the Best International Travel Insurance Companies

As a general rule, the most important coverage to have in a foreign country is travel medical insurance , as most U.S. health insurance policies don't cover you while you're abroad. Without travel medical coverage, a medical emergency in a foreign country can cost you. You'll want trip cancellation and interruption coverage if your trip is particularly expensive. And if you're traveling for an extended period of time, you'll want to ensure that your policy is extendable.

Here are our picks for the best travel insurance companies for international travel.

Best International Travel Insurance Overall

And with affordable pricing compared to competitors, Allianz is a budget-friendly choice for your international travel insurance needs.

The icing on the cake is Allyz TravelSmart, Allianz's highly-rated mobile app, which has an average rating of 4.4 out of five stars on the Google Play store across over 2,600 reviews and 4.8 out of five stars from over 22,000 reviews on the Apple app store. So, you can rest easy knowing that you can access your policy and file claims anywhere in the world without a hassle.

How to Find the Right International Travel Insurance Company

Different travelers and trips require different types of insurance coverage. So, consider these tips if you're in the market to insure your trip.

Determine your needs

Your needs for travel insurance will depend on the type of trip you're taking. You'll need to consider your destination and what you'll be doing there, either business, leisure, or adventure traveling. Policies covering adventure sports and activities will cost more. Longer, more expensive trips will also cost more.

Research the reputation of the company

When researching a company, you'll want to closely review the description of services. You'll want to see how claims are handled, any exceptions, and limitations.

You'll also want to look at the company's customer reviews on sites like Trustpilot, BBB, and Squaremouth, as this will provide insight on the quality of customer service and the claims process. You should also take note of whether companies respond to customer reviews.

Compare prices

You can get quotes through a company's website or travel insurance aggregators like InsureMyTrip and VisitorsCoverage. You'll need to be prepared to provide the following information about your trip:

  • Trip destination(s)
  • Travel dates
  • Number of travelers
  • Traveler(s) age/birthday
  • State of residence
  • Total trip cost

For companies that offer travel medical insurance, you'll also want to play around with the deductible options, as they can affect your policy premium.

Understanding International Travel Insurance Coverage Options

Travel insurance can be confusing, but we're here to simplify it for you. We'll break down the industry's jargon to help you understand what travel insurance covers to help you decide what your policy needs. Bear in mind that exclusions and limitations for your age and destination may apply.

Finding the Best Price for International Travel Insurance

Your policy cost will depend on several factors, such as the length of your trip, destination, coverage limits, and age. Typically, a comprehensive policy includes travel cancellation coverage costs between 5% and 10% of your total trip cost.

If you're planning an international trip that costs $4,500, you can expect to pay anywhere from $225 to $450 for your policy. Comparing quotes from multiple providers can help you find a budget-friendly travel insurance policy that meets your needs.

Why You Should Trust Us: How We Reviewed International Travel Insurance Companies

We ranked and assigned superlatives to the best travel insurance companies based on our insurance rating methodology . It focuses on several key factors, including:

  • Policy types: We analyzed company offerings such as coverage levels, exclusions, and policy upgrades, taking note of providers that offer a range of travel-related issues beyond the standard coverages.
  • Affordability: We recognize that cheap premiums don't necessarily equate to sufficient coverage. So, we seek providers that offer competitive rates with comprehensive policies and quality customer service. We also call out any discounts or special offers available.
  • Flexibility: Travel insurance isn't one-size-fits-all. We highlight providers that offer a wide array of coverage options, including single-trip, multi-trip, and long-term policies.
  • Claims handling: The claims process should be pain-free for policyholders. We seek providers that offer a streamlined process via online claims filing and a track record of handling claims fairly and efficiently.
  • Quality customer service: Good customer service is as important as affordability and flexibility. We highlight companies that offer 24/7 assistance and have a strong record of customer service responsiveness.

We consult user feedback and reviews to determine how each company fares in each category. We also check the provider's financial rating and volume of complaints via third-party rating agencies.

International Travel Insurance FAQs

The best insurance policy depends on your individual situation, including your destination and budget. However, popular options include Allianz Travel Insurance, World Nomads, and Travel Guard.

You should pay attention to any limitations regarding covered cancellations, pre-existing conditions, and adventure activities. For example, if you're worried you may have to cancel a trip for work reasons, ensure that you've worked at your company long enough to qualify for cancellation coverage, as that is a condition with some insurers. You should also see if your destination has any travel advisories, as that can affect your policy.

Typically, your regular health insurance won't cover you out of the country, so you'll want to make sure your travel insurance has adequate medical emergency coverage. Depending on your travel plans, you may want to purchase add-ons, such as adventure sports coverage, if you're planning on doing anything adventurous like bungee jumping.

Travel insurance is worth the price for international travel because they're generally more expensive, so you have more to lose. Additionally, your regular health insurance won't cover you in other countries, so without travel insurance, you'll end up paying out of pocket for any emergency medical care you receive out of the US.

You should purchase travel insurance as soon as possible after making payment on your trip. This makes you eligible for add-ons like coverage for pre-existing conditions and CFAR. It also mitigates the chance of any losses in the days leading up to your trip.

How can you make the most of a rewards credit card?

discover travel discounts

Think about your immediate and your long-term needs. Do you need a balance transfer or a low intro APR? And after account opening, does your card reward you for the purchases you are most likely to make? Does the card have good security, customer service, and an annual fee that you can afford?

There are two factors to consider with any credit card rewards program: how you can earn and how you can redeem. You want to earn rewards where you spend money most frequently. But redeeming is almost more important: make sure your rewards are worth the same or more when you redeem them, and that you can use them in ways that are meaningful to you (things like cash, a statement credit to pay yourself back for travel, to make purchases at merchants, to get gift cards to your favorite brands, etc.).

Some rewards credit cards, like the Discover it ® Cash Back credit card, have a base rewards earning rate AND extra rewards on certain purchases. Make sure you know when those bonus categories are active and how to maximize rewards on eligible purchases. Plus, once you have the rewards card you may be able to add it to your mobile wallet to make sure you always have it on hand to use and earn.

No matter what rewards credit card you have, remember that the reward percentage you earn likely isn't as much as what you are charged in interest on purchases. By paying your balance in full and on time, you avoid any interest charges that could cost you more than the rewards you racked up.

Rewards credit card FAQs

What are credit card rewards.

Credit card rewards are a way for you to earn spendable currency in exchange for eligible purchases-so it’s important to remember that the rewards points you earn are only valuable if you can use them for what you want, when you want.

What is the best credit card for rewards?

There are lots of great rewards credit cards. But deciding which is the best rewards credit card for you depends on your unique needs, including your credit score and likelihood for credit approval. (If you don’t have a credit history or are new to credit, consider a rewards credit card like the Discover it ® Secured Card  or a Discover ® Student Cash Back Card .) Once you know what rewards cards you are eligible for, consider the everyday rewards, bonus rewards, and annual fee of each credit card. And remember: a card with an annual fee may cost more than the rewards are worth.

Are credit card rewards taxable?

No, you don’t have to pay income tax on rewards that you earn or redeem. If you use rewards as cash to pay for purchases, however, the purchases may be subject to sales tax as normal. Additionally, if you deposit your rewards as cash into an interest-earning savings account, you will be taxed on any interest earned.

First ask yourself what kind of rewards best fit your spending and lifestyle. Love to travel? The ultimate rewards card for you might be the Discover it ® Miles Card , a travel rewards card that gives you 1.5x Miles on every single purchase with  no annual fee . Turn Miles into cash. Or redeem as a statement credit for your travel purchases like hotels, rideshares, gas stations, restaurants and more. 8   Discover is the only major credit card that gives you an unlimited match of all the Miles you've earned at the end of your first year. 1

Or if you spend a lot on groceries, gas, or restaurants, the Discover it ® Cash Back Card might be a better fit. Earn 5% cash back on everyday purchases at different places you shop each quarter like grocery stores, restaurants, gas stations, and more, up to the quarterly maximum when you activate. Plus, earn 1% cash back on all other purchases-automatically. Only Discover has unlimited Cashback Match for all new cardmembers: we’ll match all the cash back you’ve earned at the end of your first year. 1

Remember, Discover has no annual fee  on any of our cards.

What kind of rewards can I get with a Discover Card?

Do discover cash back rewards or miles ever expire, how do credit card rewards work.

Every credit card rewards program is different, so don’t assume that all rewards credit card options are equal. Different cards may call their rewards different things, but generally credit card rewards are a form of currency earned as a percentage back of the amount that you charge on your credit card for purchases.

Your credit card issuer has rules about how you can redeem your rewards (which means how you can spend the rewards in the real world). Even a cash rewards credit card may have limitations about how you actually get the cash to use or apply conversion rates at redemption that reduce the value of the rewards that you’ve earned.

There’s no single rule that applies to every rewards credit card, so it’s a good idea to fully read the cardmember agreement that comes with your credit card to make sure you know how you can earn the most and get the most from your rewards.
