Martin Gore in Bong issue no. 37 , 1998:

If I really had to stick my neck out and choose my all time favourite song, it would probably be "Walking In My Shoes". I think it has a great melody—the words and the subject matter really complement each other perfectly. The instrumentation is also interesting.

As part of a programme of talks and films at the Mute Short Circuit event in May 2011, producer Flood delivered a presentation discussing the production of several Depeche Mode tracks, including "Walking In My Shoes":

[If] I'm being honest, the track that I was most disappointed by—I mean, I say "most disappointed"—but it was "Walking In My Shoes", because I never felt that the recorded version lived up to the way I imagined the song could be. I know I'm probably the only person in the universe who thinks like that, but I felt that the original demo—the potential wasn't realized, so. [1]

Q&A from Alan Wilder's Shunt :

Xavi Martí: I'm fascinated with the darker-pretty-magical-elegant-emotive-cleanest-perfect sound of the DM song 'Walking In My Shoes'. What was the process you used to construct this song? A: It was constructed using an unusual method for us, i.e. jamming together. Martin played the guitar, I played bass and we ran a rhythm machine—this was just to get the basic feel for the track—and after much trial and error, the chorus bass line and guitar pattern fell into place. From that point onwards, Flood and I began to construct the various drum loops, the string arrangements, the main riff (which combined a piano and harpsichord through a distorted guitar amp) and all the other bits and pieces. By contrast, the bass line for the verses was much more problematic and in fact didn't get written until the very last moment.

Alan Wilder said in the May 1993 issue of Keyboard magazine:

"The piano part at the beginning of 'Walking In My Shoes' was put through a guitar processor, which distorted it and made it more edgy. We added a harpsichord sample on top of that."

I would tell you about the things they put me through

The pain I've been subjected to

But the Lord himself would blush

The countless feasts laid at my feet

Forbidden fruits for me to eat

But I think your pulse would start to rush

Now I'm not looking for absolution

Forgiveness for the things I do

But before you come to any conclusions

Try walking in my shoes

You'll stumble in my footsteps

Keep the same appointments I kept

If you try walking in my shoes

Morality would frown upon

Decency look down upon

The scapegoat fate's made of me

But I promise now, my judge and jurors

My intentions couldn't have been purer

My case is easy to see

I'm not looking for a clearer conscience

Peace of mind after what I've been through

And before we talk of any repentance

Devotional Tour

  • View history

The Devotional Tour was a 1993 concert tour by English electronic band Depeche Mode in support of the group's eighth studio album, Songs of Faith and Devotion , which was released in March 1993.

The group continued to promote Songs of Faith and Devotion the following year on the Exotic Tour/Summer Tour '94 , which included an additional North American leg. Q magazine refers to Devotional Tour as "the most debauched rock tour ever".

After a two month break, the tour was extended with a named second leg through which the group (minus Andrew Fletcher, who took a leave of absence and was replaced by tour manager and longtime band associate Daryl Bamonte for thirty-nine of its sixty shows) played to countries and territories they had never previously visited, including South Africa, Australia, East Asia, and South America as well as additional shows in the United States and Canada. The tour began with an eleven-week European leg, which kicked off in Lille, France, in mid-May and culminated in London in late July. In September 1993, the group began a North American leg, which commenced in Quebec City, Canada. The 50-date tour continued until early December, when it wrapped up in Mexico City. Later in the month, the band returned to Europe for a short tour of the United Kingdom and Ireland. The five date jaunt began in Dublin and ended, once again, in London.

Releases [ ]

The concerts in Barcelona, Liévin and Frankfurt were filmed, with the compiled footage issued later that year on a video release entitled Devotional . The video was reissued on DVD in 2004. Additionally, a live album entitled Songs of Faith and Devotion Live was released in December 1993. The album was a track-by-track live duplicate of Songs of Faith and Devotion . The release featured recordings from the concert in Liévin, although two of the tracks were recorded in Copenhagen and New Orleans respectively. Certain tracks were also released on the singles Condemnation and In Your Room.

Tour dates [ ]

  • The two back-to-back nights at Palacio de los Deportes in Mexico City, Mexico are unique in that they are the only two concerts on the Devotional Tour to not feature a support act.
  • Later tours would also employ live female backing vocalists whilst expanding their performative responsibilities. These included the 1998 The Singles Tour , which featured Janet Cooke and Jordan Bailey performing synchronized dances in addition to singing back-up. Bailey would reprise her "lead" backing vocalist role for the Exciter Tour in 2001, where she was joined by Georgia Lewis.
  • Wilder would state that his endurance as a drummer improved over the course of the tour. As a result, and to maintain consistency with the "rockier" nature of the Exotic Tour set, several songs which had previously relegated percussion parts to tape on the "Devotional" leg of the tour were adjusted to allow Wilder an expanded role behind the drum kit. These songs included "Policy of Truth", "Halo", and "Stripped".

This is the concert film from "The Devotional Tour". Of note is the DVD release, which features a second disc filled with extra songs, projections, and other features.

While "Death's Door" was recorded (both audio and video), only the audio is played (out of sequence from the original concert setlist), over the end credits of the film.

The "music video" for the live version of "Condemnation" on the DVD is a different edit of the footage on the main DVD.

The original DVD issue was in a cardboard slipcase. The 2005 reissue is in a simple plastic case.

The original US VHS release removed four tracks ("Behind The Wheel", "Mercy In You", "Fly On The Windscreen" and "Everything Counts").

About Walking in My Shoes

"Walking in My Shoes" is a song by British electronic music band Depeche Mode. It was released on 26 April 1993 as the second single from their eighth studio album, Songs of Faith and Devotion (1993). The song reached number 14 on the UK Singles Chart and matched the success of the previous single "I Feel You" on the Modern Rock Tracks chart, where it reached 1. The 7" version of "Walking in My Shoes" is not the same as the one in the Songs of Faith and Devotion album. The sound has been made more noisy and dirty, especially the drums in the verse, and the intro has been shortened. When performed live, elements of the "Grungy Gonads" mix are used in an extended intro and throughout the song. The B-side is "My Joy", the only exclusive B-side from the Songs of Faith and Devotion album, and is a rock track in the vein of "I Feel You" and "Halo". The song was cited by then-member Alan Wilder to be his favourite song from the album together with "In Your Room".   more »

Watch Depeche Mode play final show of ‘Memento Mori’ world tour

The tour consisted of 112 shows and saw them play to 2million people

Depeche Mode have played the final show of their extensive ‘Memento Mori’ tour earlier this week. See footage and the setlist below.

  • READ MORE: Depeche Mode interviewed: “Do the best you can – you don’t know if you’re going to be doing it again”

The tour consisted of 112 shows in support of the band’s 15th studio album ‘ Memento Mori ’ and saw them perform to well over 2million fans. This marked their first record and tour since losing longtime bandmate and close friend Andy Fletcher .

Yesterday (April 8), the synth-pop legends wrapped up their massive tour at the Lanxess Arena in Cologne, Germany. The show saw them draw on a similar setlist throughout FROM the run, but naturally ended with an emotional climax and farewell from the band.

The setlist for Depeche Mode’s show in Cologne was:

‘My Cosmos Is Mine’ ‘Wagging Tongue’ ‘Walking in My Shoes’ ‘It’s No Good’ ‘Policy of Truth’ ‘In Your Room’ (Zephyr Mix) ‘Everything Counts’ ‘Precious’ ‘My Favourite Stranger’ ‘Strangelove’ (Acoustic; sung by Martin) ‘Somebody’ ‘Ghosts Again’ ‘I Feel You’ ‘A Pain That I’m Used To’ (Jacques Lu Cont Remix) ‘World in My Eyes’ (Dedicated to Andrew Fletcher) ‘Black Celebration’ ‘Stripped’ ‘Behind the Wheel’ ‘Enjoy the Silence’ ‘Waiting for the Night’ (Peter & Christian on keyboards) ‘Just Can’t Get Enough’ ‘Never Let Me Down Again’ ‘Personal Jesus’

In  a glowing four-star review of Depeche Mode’s huge show at London’s Twickenham Stadium last summer, NME described the gig as as showing the band “at the top of their game and bonded in fraternity”.

“ Coldplay  might insert LEDs into your gums while  Muse  recreate War Of The Worlds with some balls-out bombast, but there’s an effortless cool to Depeche Mode’s stadium approach,” it read. “The Anton Corbijn stage design is sparse and simple, with just the giant M lettering of the new record and some tastefully simple visuals, leaving everything else down to the songs and personality with no pyro or pratting about.

“They may be demigods to their leather-clad cult, but tonight Depeche Mode have never seemed so human.”

Speaking to NME last year , Depeche Mode members Dave Gahan and Martin Gore opened up about what’s next for them following the end of tour.

“The most important thing is to be putting out good music and that people like it,” said Gore. “Once we finish this tour we’ll take a break, then we’ll see if and when we feel like doing it again. Up until now we always have. You never know, and I’m not saying that in a negative way. We just take each project as it comes.”

Gahan opened up about his compulsion to rejoin the group dispite being so vocal about his frequent reluctance, saying: “That is a good word. It was like that; I was compelled. Just when I thought I was out, they dragged me back in!”

He added: “Losing Fletch made that feeling more real. Everything will come to an end. I don’t know when that is. After Fletch passed and we had to continue I said, ‘Try to enjoy what you’ve got to do here and do the best you can’. You really don’t know if you’re going to be doing it again.”

In other news, the band marked the end of their ‘Memento Mori’ tour by sharing a new music video and huge remix package for ‘People Are Good’.

Das obligatorische „See you next time“ von Dave Gahan blieb diesmal aus.

... was zum Träumen ....

LG an Euch alle

Sehr viel nicht ausgesprochenes …

steckt in Deinen Zeilen @Marcus.

Euch allen alles Gute!!

Lasche Kontrollen

Ist denn was passiert? ...

… Nein… Welch Risiko… Huch

Der liebe Gott ist ein DM-Fan!

…und er hätte sich doch vielleicht „People Are Good“ als Zu-Zugabe wünschen können!? ;-)

Gott möchte People are people live hören.

Vorband in Köln
