‘Percy Jackson’ Season 2 to Start Filming by Fall — Everything We Know So Far

Walker Scobell on set of 'Percy Jackson and the Olympians' Season 1

Bring on the Monsters!

For exclusive news and updates, subscribe to our percy jackson and the olympians newsletter :.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2 is on the way. A recent blog post from author, series co-creator, and executive producer Rick Riordan reveals that they aim to have started filming Season 2 by this fall, and there are more production updates where that came from.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians  stars Walker Scobell as the titular demigod, the pre-teen son of human Sally Jackson ( Virginia Kull ) and Olympian god Poseidon ( Toby Stephens ). When Percy learns of his mythical abilities, he’s sent to Camp Half-Blood for protection with the help of his best friend/satyr protector, Grover ( Aryan Simhadri ). It’s at this training ground and demigod safe haven that Percy learns his favorite teacher, Mr. Brunner ( Glynn Turman ), is actually a centaur named Chiron, trainer of demigods.

When Percy is accused of stealing his Uncle Zeus’ ( the late Lance Reddick ) master bolt, Percy embarks on a quest across the country to prove his innocence. Grover and the impressive demigod Annabeth ( Leah Sava Jeffries ) join Percy on this mission to find the lightning thief. Percy’s true main goal on this adventure is to save his mother, who he believed to be dead after she fought off a Minotaur to save him. But she was taken to the Underworld by Hades ( Jay Duplass ).

Percy’s Season 1 adventure ended with Zeus’ bolt restored, among other key familial developments that we’ll let the episodes reveal themselves, and with the trio back at Camp Half-Blood before returning to their homes at the end of summer. Grover is on a mission to find Pan, the long-missing god of nature, which will take him to the seas in Season 2, based on the second book of the franchise.

Here’s everything there is to know so far about  Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians  Season 2 Starts Filming by Fall 2024

Riordan has been keeping PJO fans up to date on the Disney+ series’ developments through his blog for years. In an update published on May 2 , Riordan revealed that he won’t be doing a book tour for the new PJO spinoff book, Wrath of the Triple Goddess , because he anticipates the show will be back in production by the time a tour would begin.

“Sadly, I will not be doing an in-person tour for this book in the fall. We anticipate being back at work producing Season 2 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians  by then, if all goes according to plan,” Riordan said. “And also, to be honest, I kind of want a breather from touring! Last year was incredible with three different media tours — for The Sun and the  Star,  Chalice of the   Gods , and of course the TV show. But this year is going to be more about catching up with projects.”

Riordan’s update leaves the door open for production to begin before the fall.

Which Book is  Percy Jackson and the Olympians  Season 2   Based On?

The new episodes will be based on the second book in Riordan’s original PJO franchise,  The Sea of Monsters . Riordan expressed his excitement to head into the Sea of Monsters when the series was renewed in February 2024 , about one week after the Season 1 finale came out.

“I can’t wait to bring the next season of  Percy Jackson to Disney+!” Riordan said in a statement at the time. “Raise anchors. Hoist the mainsail. All hands on deck, demigods. We’re heading for the Sea of Monsters!”

Riordan’s  Sea of Monsters description on his site reads: “When Thalia’s tree is mysteriously poisoned, the magical borders of Camp Half-Blood begin to fail. Now Percy and his friends have just days to find the only magic item powerful to save the camp before it is overrun by monsters. The catch: they must sail into the Sea of Monsters to find it.”

The daughter of sky god and king of Olympus, Zeus, Thalia is a forbidden child like Percy. She was Annabeth and Luke’s ( Charlie Bushnell ) best friend who sacrificed herself to save her friends from the monster Alecto ( Megan Mullally ) and her sister prior to the events of Season 1. Zeus transformed his daughter into a tree to keep her alive in some shape or form.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2 Episodes

Riordan revealed in his post that the writers’ room is developing scripts based on an eight-episode outline that Riordan created in 2023.

“Scripts: We are working from an eight-episode outline that I created last year, detailing what each episode will cover from the book,” the author wrote. “From there, the writers’ room has drawn up a more detailed outline of each episode (with my input). I have read all those outlines and they’re in really good shape. The next step is writing the actual scripts. Half of those are done and the rest are in progress. I am pleased with the results so far.”

He also noted that art designs for the monsters to come are underway, in addition to set designs. “Everything I have seen so far looks incredible,” he said. “I am constantly amazed how our designers can find new ways to bring these scenes to life. If you’ve read the book Sea of Monsters , you already know some of the treats that await you, but I won’t spoil the surprises.”

Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2 Casting

'Percy Jackson' Trio Tells Their Audition Story & Looks Back on Season 1 (VIDEO)

'Percy Jackson' Trio Tells Their Audition Story & Looks Back on Season 1 (VIDEO)

While there were open casting calls (anyone could submit an audition, no submission from an agent was required) for Season 1, it seems that Season 2 will be closed castings. That means that the casting director will only send audition requests to actors through their talent agents. Many of the adult guest stars of Percy Jackson were offered their roles rather than having to audition for them. That’s common for big names in their cast, such Reddick, Mullally, Stephens, Turman, Timothy Omundson , Jason Mantzoukas , Lin-Manuel Miranda , and more.

“Casting: Our core team of actors is so excited to get back to filming, and so are we!” Riordan shared. “Regarding new castings, as I’ve mentioned before, that is all handled by our casting director. I don’t get involved until they start sending the producers audition tapes to look at. I know of no plans for open casting calls for any roles, so I would not expect any announcements from me about how to submit for this role or that role.”

Riordan encourages young actors who dream of being on the show to continue committing themselves to their crafts and auditioning as much as possible. Scobell, Jeffries, Simhadri, and the other young stars “won the roles by competing against hundreds, even thousands of other actors who have done the exact same hard work. Even the youngest ones are pros, and it shows in their tapes,” he said.

Reddick’s Zeus, of course, will need to be recast in light of his death.  Percy Jackson showrunner, co-creator, and executive producer Jon Steinberg told  Deadline   upon the show’s renewal that they weren’t emotionally prepared to begin the casting process for Reddick’s replacement.

“I don’t think anybody’s there yet,” he said. “There’s also just a little bit of denial, I think. That’s something that we’re gonna have to deal with. But we’re incredibly grateful for this character that he helped build and the presence that he created. I do not envy whoever has to step into his shoes.”

Executive producer Dan Shotz said, “It was it was really, really a rough situation, and we miss him very much. But just the fact that the world got to see him in this iconic role — that will live on forever.”

Riordan and Stephens paid tribute to Reddick in remarks to TV Insider . “He had the power,” Riordan said. “He was a perfect leader, and to see him embody Zeus, the king of the cosmos, was just incredible. So it’s bittersweet, but I’m glad that one of the things the show can do is be a coda and a tribute and one of his last performances.”

Stephens, who shares a pivotal scene with Reddick in Season 1 as the brothers Zeus and Poseidon, said, “I was really looking forward to doing more stuff with him. That’s really disappointing, but I’m sure they’ll find a way to honor him in the way that they continue the story forward. It’s just really sad.”

Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2 Release Date

It’s too early in development for Riordan to be able to provide a guess on when the new season will debut. But Season 1 started filming in Vancouver in June 2022 and wrapped in February 2023. Season 1 premiered on Tuesday, December 19 on Disney+. The Hollywood strikes were active that summer in between the wrap of filming and the premiere, but given that the season had finished filming, the post-production team was able to edit the episodes without delay. Fans can expect a similar timeline for the Season 2 turnaround.

JACKS EMBARK ON FINAL TRIP OF REGULAR SEASON

  • The Jackrabbits have drawn first blood in 23 of their 39 games so far this season. SDSU holds a 13-10 record when scoring first and has tallied at least one run in the first inning 19 times, scoring 35 runs.
  • With their 16-4 loss to Oral Roberts in the first game of the April 27 doubleheader, the Jackrabbits dropped to 8-3 in series-opening games this season.
  • South Dakota State is 14-0 this season when holding the opposition to five runs or less. The Jackrabbits picked up two more wins of that variety in both of their victories (9-5 and 4-3) in the April 20-21 series against St. Thomas.
  • In posting a series-opening shutout against St. Thomas on March 22, the Jackrabbits won a 1-0 game for the time since a home win versus Fort Wayne on March 31, 2017.
  • Both of the Jackrabbits' victories in their recent home series against St. Thomas came in their last at-bat. SDSU scored four times in the bottom of the eighth inning of the April 20 series opener to pull out a 9-5 victory, then broke another tie with a run in the home half of the eighth in the second game of an April 21 twinbill to secure a 4-3 victory.
  • Jordan Sagedahl and Reece Anderson hit grand slams in back-to-back games of the Omaha series last month, upping the Jackrabbits' team total this season to six. Sagedahl connected on a grand slam as part of a career-best six-RBI performance on April 13, while Anderson's grand slam came in the April 14 series finale.
  • The Jackrabbits also won two games in their last at-bat during a four-game series in early March at SIU-Edwardsville, scoring three times in the top of the ninth in the March 1 series opener and putting together a game-winning three-run frame in the top of the seventh inning in the second game of a March 2 doubleheader. SDSU also won in its last at-bat on Feb. 18 at New Mexico State on a ninth-inning grand slam by Dawson Parry .
  • Parry hit two grand slams the week of March 11-17, giving him three for the season and five for his career. He connected in the first inning of the Jacks' March 13 game at Kansas State and again in the sixth inning of the March 17 series finale at Oral Roberts. With the bases loaded this season, Parry is 6-for-8 (.750 average), recording the three grand slams along with three other hits and one walk for a total of 18 runs batted in. Most recently, he delivered a two-run single with the bases loaded in Game 1 of the April 6 doubleheader at North Dakota State.
  • Parry set an SDSU single-game record by drawing five bases on balls in the Feb. 19 series finale at New Mexico State. Parry doubled in his only official at-bat in the sixth inning after walking his first three times to the plate, including twice intentionally. The previous record of four walks in a game was shared by four players, including Ryan McDonald in 2023.
  • Cael Frost hit a two-run home run in his first at-bat as a Jackrabbit in the top of the first inning of the Feb. 16 season opener at New Mexico State. Frost has recorded a hit in 34 of the 39 games he has played this season, including putting together a 19-game hit streak from Feb. 18-March 19 that tied Tyson Fisher (2006) and Matt Johnson (2016) for the longest hitting streak within a season in the D-I era of Jackrabbit baseball (since 2005). Frost had a separate 10-game hitting streak come to an end in the April 27 opener versus Oral Roberts.
  • Frost (17 HR, 51 RBIs) and Parry (13 HR, 53 RBIs) remain one of the top offensive tandems in the country as the duo have combined for 30 home runs and 104 runs batted in so far this season.

  • The game three win for Alabama was just the third shutout loss of the season for Tennessee

  • Kristen White was 4-for-6 (.667) at the plate over the weekend, breaking up the no-hit bid in Saturday's game and driving in the winning run on Sunday with an infield RBI single

Triple Threat

  • Kenleigh Cahalan hit her fourth triple of the season Sunday against Tennessee, which leads the team and is tied for second in the SEC
  • The last Alabama player with four triples in a season was Sydney Booker in 2018
  • Only six players have hit five or more in a season, with Haylie McCleney as the last to do so with five in 2016

  • Tide pitching has only allowed two or more home runs in three games this season
  • Kenleigh Cahalan leads the team with nine multi-hit games this season, followed by Abby Duchscherer (8) and Jenna Johnson (7)
  • After an injury early in the season limited her to just one complete game in her first 11 appearances, Jocelyn Briski has now gone the distance in three of her last four starts allowing just four runs, two earned, over 21.0 innings pitched combined across those three complete-game efforts vs. Ole Miss, Arkansas and Tennessee

Why the Astros think they've turned their season around

trip hazard season 2

The Houston Astros arrived at Alfredo Harp Helú Stadium in Mexico City on Saturday searching for a symbolic fresh start, and Yordan Álvarez , their menacing slugger, found it almost immediately -- on a white piece of paper taped to a wall inside their temporary clubhouse. On it was a simple message, scribbled in black marker:

Introductions, 3:45 p.m .

At that time, members of the team would line up along the third-base line to be formally introduced for the start of Major League Baseball's brief foray into Mexico City, just like they normally would on Opening Day. Álvarez saw it as an opportunity.

"It was like we were starting a new season," Álvarez said in Spanish. "I told the guys, 'This is the moment to believe our season starts today.'"

The Astros, losers of eight of their previous nine games and already in a deep hole within the American League West, proceeded to put together two of their most complete and impressive performances all season, beating the Colorado Rockies by a combined 14 runs on Saturday and Sunday. They were playing against one of the worst teams in their sport and hitting in the thin air of a ballpark that sits 7,300 feet above sea level, but the Astros -- still a whopping 10 games below .500 -- came away from that series believing they had turned a corner.

"We're going to get super hot and go on a run," Astros third baseman Alex Bregman said in the wake of it.

It would have to be quite the run.

The Astros lost 18 of their first 25 games, tied for the second-worst mark in their franchise's history. Only two teams -- the 1981 Kansas City Royals , in a strike season, and the 1914 Boston Braves -- have overcome such a start to make the playoffs.

Entering the Mexico City series, six of their starting pitchers had already spent time on the injured list. Their vaunted bullpen trio of Bryan Abreu , Ryan Pressly and Josh Hader had combined to allow 24 earned runs in 32 innings. Their decorated offense had stranded an American League-leading 202 baserunners. And two of their most important bats, Bregman and, to a greater extent, José Abreu , were in the midst of a profound slump.

In spring training, a two-game series in Mexico City was looked upon by players as a fun getaway to break up the monotony of a traditional schedule. As the season ensued and the losses mounted, it evolved into a necessary respite, an opportunity for a clean slate. The results only seemed to validate that.

"We want to use this series as a springboard to play better than we have," Astros manager Joe Espada said in Spanish. "I think we demonstrated over these last two games the type of team we are."

The Astros carry the unwavering confidence of a club that has appeared in each of the past seven AL Championship Series, even if present circumstances make it seem misplaced. Legitimate reasons for optimism do exist, though, beginning with the health of their starting pitchers. Justin Verlander made his delayed season debut on April 19, Framber Valdez was activated off the injured list Sunday, Cristian Javier should rejoin the rotation this week and José Urquidy is on track to return next month. The Abreu-Pressly-Hader trio should be much better. And there's little reason to believe the lineup, which has gone through 23 different variations already, won't eventually be a force.

But it's also easy to see why the Astros are vulnerable -- why we might actually be witnessing the end of one of the most dominant runs in recent baseball history. Most of the Astros' best players are in the back half of their careers, some nearing the ends of them. The organizational depth that prolonged their window has dried up, making injuries potentially more devastating than ever before. These past two games were nice, but the Astros' next series will come against far better teams in the Cleveland Guardians , Seattle Mariners and New York Yankees , with little margin to fall much further

And then there's Abreu, in his age-37 season and in the middle of a contract that pays him $58.5 million through 2025. His first 71 at-bats have consisted of just seven hits and 18 strikeouts. Scouts say he has been late on almost every fastball. The Astros have recently placed Abreu in a quasi-platoon with the left-handed-hitting Jon Singleton . The recent promotion of first-base prospect Joey Loperfido might cut into his playing time further.

"You know what's been the hardest thing for me? And I say this from the bottom of my heart -- I feel embarrassed," Abreu said in Spanish. "The people in this organization brought me here to do a good job. I haven't done that. The hard thing, too, is that my teammates see that I haven't done my job, although they've always supported me, always been by my side. But I won't stay down."

Abreu got two hits past a drawn-in infield Saturday. And though he didn't take much solace in a result that came while still feeling out of rhythm, he did acknowledge the significance of his first multi-RBI game all year.

"It's been a while," Abreu said with a smile.

Something similar occurred late in Sunday's game, when Bregman, homerless while slashing .216/.287/.268, lined a base hit up the middle. Bregman, a famously slow starter, called it "my best swing of the year." He had been fighting timing issues all season, but he told himself to be ready to hit sooner when he came to bat in the top of the eighth. He started his load earlier so he could wait on the fastball, adjust to an off-speed pitch and avoid feeling rushed. When he loads earlier, he said, "everything is simpler."

He thinks that eighth-inning swing was the start of something.

He thinks the Astros are finally coming.

"I know the character of the guys in this room," Bregman said. "I know that we have fighters in here that are going to continue to show up and compete every day and prepare correctly and go out and execute on the field. We have way too many good players in here, way too many who know what success is like at this level.

"I think we'll see a different Stros team the rest of the year. We'll be where we need to be by the end of it. I know no one's done it since 1914 or whatever, come back from this start, but we've got a good group in here and we're up for the challenge."
