The 7 classes of Royal Caribbean cruise ships, explained

Editor's Note

Even if you're a newcomer to cruising, you've probably heard of Royal Caribbean 's giant Icon Class and Oasis Class ships. With the exception of a single MSC Cruises vessel , they're far bigger than any other cruise vessel afloat and like nothing else you'll find at sea.

Indeed, when you hear people talking about the wow factor of Royal Caribbean's "floating megaresorts," it's likely they're referring to the six ships in these two sets of vessels. This includes the just-unveiled Icon of the Seas — the world's biggest cruise ship.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter.

That said, not all Royal Caribbean ships are similarly supersized. While the line is perhaps best known for giant vessels — it operates six of the 10 biggest cruise ships in the world — it also markets some relatively smaller, more intimate ships.

In fact, Royal Caribbean has eight vessels that are less than half the size of the Oasis Class ships.

If you're thinking about booking a Royal Caribbean cruise, you'll find the line offers a wide range of ship styles and designs.

With the relatively recent removal of two older ships from its fleet, Royal Caribbean — the world's largest cruise line by passenger capacity — now has 27 oceangoing vessels in all. That's more than any other major cruise line, and it means that you have a lot of choices when it comes to picking the perfect Royal Caribbean ship for you.

The good news for those of you trying to get a handle on all the options is that the 27 ships can easily be bunched into just seven groups of vessels that have similar amenities. If you know one member of the group, you know them all.

These seven groups are made up of ships constructed around the same time with the same basic design. They're known in cruise industry lingo as "classes," and each has its own look and feel.

An introduction to Royal Caribbean ships

cruise ship passenger classes

For the most part, Royal Caribbean operates big, bustling megaships that will appeal to people who like a megaresort experience. The company has built its brand around offering vacationers a ton of diversions on its ships, whether for dining (some vessels have more than 20 distinct places to grab a bite) or entertainment. Its vessels are lively and fun.

The over-the-top megaresort experience on a Royal Caribbean ship varies from class to class, though.

The line's one Icon Class and five Oasis Class ships are unlike anything else you'll find at sea when it comes to size, amenities and capacity. They each can hold more than 6,600 passengers, with every berth full.

Somewhat smaller in size but still giant by any measure, each of the line's five Quantum Class and three Freedom Class vessels has a total capacity ranging from around 4,500 to 5,600 passengers. With space for around 3,800 passengers at maximum occupancy, the line's five Voyager Class vessels are relatively large, too.

Together, the 19 vessels of these five classes — Icon, Oasis, Quantum, Freedom and Voyager — make up Royal Caribbean's big-ship fleet. The line's remaining eight vessels, split among two classes, are smaller, with maximum occupancy topping out at around 2,500 passengers.

While no longer the focus at Royal Caribbean, the smaller ships (which are generally the line's older ships) allow it to offer itineraries to places that aren't as easy for big ships to visit. Not all ports in the world can handle a ship the size of Icon of the Seas.

The smaller ships also appeal to a subset of Royal Caribbean fans who prefer more intimacy in a cruise vessel and don't mind giving up some onboard amenities to get it. They are also often less expensive to sail per day.

As you might expect, the biggest Royal Caribbean ships have the most amenities. With each step down in size, you'll find fewer restaurants, bars, entertainment venues and attractions. Even the smallest Royal Caribbean ships still have quite a bit to offer, though.

If you're sailing with the line for the first time, it's important to understand that not all of Royal Caribbean's signature attractions and venues are present on all its ships. For instance, while every Royal Caribbean vessel now has one of the line's iconic climbing walls (some have two), only the 19 ships of the line's big-ship classes have a FlowRider surfing simulator. Only the 14 ships of the Icon, Oasis, Freedom and Voyager classes have ice skating rinks.

Here is a look at the seven classes of Royal Caribbean ships in more detail.

Ships in class: Icon of the Seas (2024), Star of the Seas (coming in 2025); unnamed vessel (coming in 2026)

Size: 250,800 tons

cruise ship passenger classes

Is your idea of a great vacation a trip to a megaresort loaded with more restaurants, bars, theaters and watery amusements than you can imagine? Royal Caribbean's new Icon Class is the ship class for you.

As mentioned above, Icon of the Seas — the only Icon Class ship currently in operation — is bigger than any other cruise vessel afloat at 250,800 tons, and for big-ship lovers, there's really nothing quite like it. The two more Icon Class ships debuting soon will be equally over-the-top in size and venues.

Each of the Icon Class vessels that are operating or soon to debut has been designed with seven separate pools (a new record for a cruise ship), a water park with six waterslides (also a record), a kiddie splash zone, surfing simulators, a miniature golf course, a basketball court and even a zip line. And that's just on their top decks.

Inside the vessels, you'll find more lounges, bars, restaurants and shops than you can imagine — plus huge casinos, spas and showrooms with Broadway-style shows. They even have indoor ice skating rinks, just in case you want to get your Michelle Kwan on.

What you won't find on the Icon Class ships is intimacy. These are vessels that can carry as many as 7,600 passengers when every berth is filled. They operate with around 2,300 crew members. That means you could be sharing your vacation with nearly 10,000 people.

If the above sounds downright outrageous to you, it is. Keep in mind, though, that the biggest megaresorts on land are even bigger. The biggest resort in the U.S. — The Venetian in Las Vegas — has 7,092 rooms. That means it can hold more than 14,000 guests, assuming there are two people per room.

By that measure, Icon Class ships are almost small.

Icon Class ships also don't necessarily feel as crowded as they are. Royal Caribbean's designers are masters at creating vessels that can carry thousands and thousands of people but still feel relatively uncrowded — at least in some areas. You can have a quiet afternoon reading a book on a bench in the sometimes nearly empty, tree-lined Central Park area of Icon of the Seas while, just a few decks above, thousands of vacationers are frolicking about at the ship's pools.

Only one ship in this series (Icon of the Seas) is currently operating, but the second vessel in the series (Star of the Seas) is already open for bookings. Its maiden voyage is set for Aug. 17, 2025.

Quantum Class

Ships in class: Quantum of the Seas (2014), Anthem of the Seas (2015), Ovation of the Seas (2016), Spectrum of the Seas (2019) and Odyssey of the Seas (2021)

Size: 168,666 to 169,379 tons

cruise ship passenger classes

Unveiled in 2014, the Quantum Class may be Royal Caribbean's most innovative class ever.

In addition to a wide range of restaurants, bars and showrooms, the five ships in the class feature some of the most unusual new attractions you'll find at sea. This includes bumper car pavilions (yes, somehow they found room for these) and skydiving simulators.

The ships also have glass-enclosed capsules mounted on mechanical arms that will take you soaring into the sky for bird's-eye views. They're called the North Star rides, and they may be the oddest attractions ever added to the top of a cruise ship.

Quantum Class ships also feature unusual, multilevel entertainment spaces with floor-to-ceiling glass walls called Two70. The spaces are home to innovative shows that often feature aerial performers, singers and dancers who emerge from openings in the floor or the ceiling. At certain times of the day, the glass walls transform into an expansive ambient surface called Vistarama that projects real and imagined scenes.

All the above come in addition to many of the core Royal Caribbean attractions you'll find on most of the brand's ships, including pools, rock climbing walls, casinos, spas and Broadway-style shows. But don't expect all the classic Royal Caribbean features on Quantum Class ships. For instance, you won't find ice skating rinks on the vessels even though they're a staple of all other big Royal Caribbean ships. Quantum Class ships also don't have water parks.

The Quantum Class ships aren't quite as big as Royal Caribbean's Icon Class and Oasis Class vessels (and thus don't have quite as much room for things like ice skating rinks). At around 169,000 tons, though, they're still among the biggest ships at sea, with a significant number of venues.

cruise ship passenger classes

They also can carry a lot of people. Most of the ships in the class hold 4,180 passengers at double occupancy — 4,905 if every berth is filled. One exception is Spectrum of the Seas, which was specifically built for the China market with some design differences. It can hold up to 5,622 passengers. Additionally, the newest ship in the series, Odyssey of the Seas, can hold up to 5,498 passengers.

One more big difference between the ships of the Quantum Class and other big Royal Caribbean ships: The Quantum Class ships are designed to be more versatile.

If you look closely at their deck plans, you'll notice that more of their main attractions are indoors and protected from the elements than the ships of the Icon, Oasis or Freedom classes, for example.

One of the two main pool areas on each Quantum Class ship (except Odyssey of the Seas) is enclosed. The bumper car pavilions are, too, doubling as roller skating rinks or indoor basketball courts. This allows Royal Caribbean to send the ships to cooler regions of the world, such as Alaska and Northern Europe, where the temperatures aren't always conducive to outdoor activity.

Royal Caribbean has also used some Quantum Class ships for sailings out of China.

Oasis Class

Ships in class: Oasis of the Seas (2009), Allure of the Seas (2010), Harmony of the Seas (2016), Symphony of the Seas (2018), Wonder of the Seas (2022) and Utopia of the Seas (coming 2024)

Size: 226,838 to 236,857 tons

cruise ship passenger classes

Until this year's debut of Icon of the Seas, these were the world's biggest and most venue-packed cruise ships. Although they're not quite as big as the new vessel, they remain among the very best options for vacationers who love nothing more than a big, bustling resort with every sort of amusement known to humans.

Each of the Oasis Class vessels has three separate main pool areas, a kiddie splash zone, surfing simulators, a miniature golf course, a basketball court and a zip line on their top decks — a nearly as wide array of features as the new Icon of the Seas. Inside the vessels, as on Icon of the Seas, you'll find a seemingly endless number of lounges, bars, restaurants and shops, as well as large casinos, spas and showrooms. Like Icon of the Seas, each ship has an indoor ice skating rink.

As is the case for Royal Caribbean's new Icon Class ships, which have many similarities with the Oasis Class ships, these vessels carry a huge number of people. They can carry as many as 6,988 passengers when every berth is filled. They operate with around 2,200 crew members. That means you could be sharing your vacation with more than 9,000 people — not quite as many as the nearly 10,000 you could find on an Icon Class ship but still a huge number.

The good news for those of you worried about excessive crowds is that, as is the case with the Icon Class ships, the Oasis Class ships don't necessarily feel as crowded as they are. Royal Caribbean designed them with a "neighborhood" concept that spreads passengers out in seven or eight (depending on the ship) distinct areas, such as the Pool and Sports Zone and the Boardwalk amusement zone. A lot of thought went into how passengers move between these neighborhoods, too.

cruise ship passenger classes

Note that there are a few differences from ship to ship in the Oasis Class series. For starters, the three newest and largest ships in the series — Wonder of the Seas, Symphony of the Seas and Harmony of the Seas — have a few additional attractions and venues. Among them is the Ultimate Abyss, a terrifying slide that drops nine decks. (Royal Caribbean says it drops 10 decks, but don't be fooled; the line counts a nonexistent Deck 13.)

There are also giant waterslides on four of the five ships. Only Allure of the Seas is missing them. There are plans to add waterslides to Allure of the Seas, but they were put on hold after COVID-19 shut down cruising in 2020.

A handful of restaurants also differ from ship to ship in the series.

The newest and largest ship in the series, Wonder of the Seas, has the most differences from the other Oasis Class vessels. At 236,857 tons, it's about 4% bigger than the next biggest ship in the series; the extra space is devoted to such additions as a dedicated suite area with a private lounge, a restaurant and a sun deck.

A sixth ship in the Oasis Class series, Utopia of the Seas , is scheduled to debut in July. Construction of the vessel began in April 2022 at the Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard in St. Nazaire, France — the same shipyard that built Wonder of the Seas.

Radiance Class

Ships in class: Radiance of the Seas (2001), Brilliance of the Seas (2002), Serenade of the Seas (2003) and Jewel of the Seas (2004)

Size: 90,090 tons

cruise ship passenger classes

Not sure you want to sail on a megaship with 6,000 people but still want a vessel with a good amount of features and activities? The Radiance Class ships may be the perfect solution.

At 90,090 tons, the four vessels in the series are less than half the size of Royal Caribbean's massive Icon Class and Oasis Class ships, but still big enough that they have a lot to offer.

Each vessel has more than a half-dozen places to eat, including the main restaurant, a casual buffet, a steakhouse, an Italian restaurant and an Asian venue.

You'll also find three pools on each ship, whirlpools, a rock climbing wall, a miniature golf course, a sports court and an adults-only solarium. Each ship has a theater, a spa, a casino, and multiple bars and lounges.

What you won't find on the ships, because of their smaller size, are all the gee-whiz attractions — such as ice skating rinks, surfing simulators, giant waterslides and bumper car pavilions — that Royal Caribbean has put on its bigger vessels. If you can't live without those sorts of features on a cruise ship, the Radiance class probably isn't for you.

Each Radiance Class ship holds more than 2,100 passengers at double occupancy (plus a few hundred more with every berth filled). That's less than half the number of passengers on the biggest Royal Caribbean ships.

That makes them perfect for cruisers who want to get away from the sort of crowds on the biggest megaships without giving up many of the amenities that big ships offer.

Freedom Class

Ships in class: Freedom of the Seas (2006), Liberty of the Seas (2007) and Independence of the Seas (2008)

Size: 154,407 to 156,271 tons

cruise ship passenger classes

As recently as 2009, these were the biggest cruise ships in the world, and they're still quite big compared to almost all other cruise vessels afloat.

While no longer on the list of the top 25 biggest cruise ships — they've been displaced by Royal Caribbean's Icon, Oasis and Quantum Class vessels, as well as several ships from other lines — the Freedom Class vessels offer a classic big-ship experience with lots of restaurants, bars, showrooms and deck-top attractions.

The Freedom Class ships, notably, were the first Royal Caribbean ships to feature a FlowRider surfing simulator on their top decks — now a signature attraction for the line. The vessels also have multiple pool areas, a water park, a miniature golf course and a rock climbing wall on their top decks (which are among the most activity-packed at sea).

Indeed, the top decks of Freedom Class ships are more loaded with attractions than any other Royal Caribbean vessels except the Icon Class and Oasis Class vessels. You just won't find several of the most over-the-top attractions, such as zip lines, that Icon Class and Oasis Class ships have.

cruise ship passenger classes

In their interiors, Freedom Class vessels have the mall-like Royal Promenade spaces filled with eateries, bars and shops that have become standard on bigger Royal Caribbean ships. They also have large casinos and spas.

Related: Royal Caribbean just fixed the worst part of cruising

At around 156,000 tons, the Freedom Class ships are about 38% smaller than the Icon Class ships and 31% smaller than the Oasis Class ships, a significant step down in size. They're nearly 8% smaller than the Quantum Class ships.

They also carry significantly fewer passengers than the Oasis Class ships. Freedom of the Seas and Independence of the Seas carry about 3,900 passengers at double occupancy (closer to 4,600 with every berth filled). Liberty of the Seas can carry several hundred more.

Voyager Class

Ships in class: Voyager of the Seas (1999), Explorer of the Seas (2000), Adventure of the Seas (2001), Navigator of the Seas (2002) and Mariner of the Seas (2003)

Size: 137,276 to 139,999 tons

cruise ship passenger classes

The Voyager Class ships are similar to Freedom Class ships but shorter in length. In other words, the Freedom Class was a stretched version of the Voyager Class.

Like the Freedom Class vessels, the Voyager Class ships have many of Royal Caribbean's signature attractions, including rock climbing walls and ice skating rinks. In fact, the ships were the first at Royal Caribbean to have those attractions.

Voyager Class ships were also the first to feature a Royal Promenade with bars, cafes and shops in their interior. Each also has several specialty restaurants in addition to the main dining room and casual buffet; specialty restaurants include a version of Royal Caribbean's signature Chops Grille steakhouse and an Italian restaurant.

One of the main differences between the Voyager Class and the Freedom Class is that the Royal Promenades on Voyager Class ships are shorter. The top-deck areas of the Voyager Class ships are also more truncated than the Freedom Class vessels.

There are also fewer cabins on the Voyager Class ships, resulting in fewer passengers on board a typical sailing. Most of the ships carry around 3,100 passengers at double occupancy — about 800 fewer than the typical Freedom Class ship.

At around 139,000 tons, the ships are about 11% smaller than the Freedom Class ships.

There are also some variations in attractions among the five Voyager Class vessels. Navigator of the Seas has a relatively new waterslide zone that's home to The Blaster, the longest waterslide at sea . You won't find that on the other ships, though most of them have different waterslides. Only three of the five ships — Voyager of the Seas, Navigator of the Seas and Mariner of the Seas — have laser tag courses. Adventure of the Seas is the only vessel in the class with a kiddie splash zone.

Vision Class

Ships in class: Grandeur of the Seas (1996), Rhapsody of the Seas (1997), Enchantment of the Seas (1997) and Vision of the Seas (1998)

Size: 73,817 to 82,910 tons

cruise ship passenger classes

Dating to the 1990s, the Vision Class ships are the smallest at Royal Caribbean, and they offer fewer onboard attractions and amenities than is typical for the line's vessels.

In general, they appeal to cruisers looking for a more intimate experience on a cruise ship as well as those who care more about the destinations they visit than the onboard attractions.

Along those lines, Royal Caribbean often sends some of its Vision Class ships to Europe in the summer to operate port call-intensive itineraries. The vessels also often sail longer trips in the Caribbean that include less-visited southerly islands. In both cases, the allure of the cruises has more to do with the ports the ships visit than the onboard experience.

Vision Class ships are also sometimes based in secondary ports such as Baltimore or San Juan, Puerto Rico, where the size of the local cruise market might not warrant a larger vessel.

Except for rock climbing walls, the Vision Class ships have none of the signature Royal Caribbean deck-top attractions such as surfing and skydiving simulators. For the most part, their top decks are lined with pools, whirlpools and sunning areas, as is typical for ships built in the 1990s. All have at least two pools and six whirlpools, except for Enchantment of the Seas, which has three pools and six whirlpools.

In addition to main restaurants and casual buffets, each ship has at least one (and often several) additional specialty restaurants. The line's signature Chops Grille steakhouse and Italian eatery Giovanni's Table are two of them. Rhapsody of the Seas has the biggest selection of dining; Enchantment of the Seas has the smallest. Three of the four vessels — all but Enchantment of the Seas — have an Izumi Asian restaurant.

Each of the ships varies slightly in size. Grandeur of the Seas is the smallest of the four vessels, measuring around 74,000 tons. Enchantment of the Seas is the biggest, measuring around 83,000 tons (it was, notably, lengthened by 73 feet in 2005).

  • Dining options : Higher-class ships often offer a variety of gourmet dining choices, including exclusive restaurants with renowned chefs.

Impact on Passenger Experience

To truly enhance your passenger experience, consider the impact of the different cruise ship classes on amenities and services available to you.

When you choose a specific class, it’s not just about the size or luxury level of your cabin; it also affects the overall atmosphere and sense of belonging on board.

Each class offers its own unique set of experiences and activities tailored to meet your preferences. Whether you opt for a budget-friendly option or splurge on a luxury cruise, know that you are part of a community that shares similar interests.

From vibrant entertainment venues to exclusive dining options, each ship class creates an environment where you can feel connected and valued as a passenger.

Understanding the Amenities and Features of Each Cruise Ship Class

Explore the amenities and features of each cruise ship class to make the most informed decision for your next vacation. When it comes to choosing a cruise, finding a ship that aligns with your preferences is crucial.

Cruise ships offer various classes, each with its own unique offerings and experiences. To help you navigate through the options, here are some key highlights of different cruise ship classes:

  • Luxury Class : Indulge in opulence and sophistication as you sail on a luxury-class cruise ship. Experience impeccable service, gourmet dining options, and lavish accommodations that will make you feel like royalty.
  • Family-Friendly Class : If you’re traveling with kids or looking for family-friendly entertainment, this is the class for you. Enjoy exciting onboard activities such as water parks, mini-golf courses, and age-specific clubs where little ones can have fun while parents relax.
  • Adventure Class : For those seeking adventure and thrill, an adventure-class cruise ship is perfect. Get ready for adrenaline-pumping activities like rock climbing walls, zip lines across the deck, and even surfing simulators.

How Cruise Ship Classes Impact the Overall Cruise Experience

When it comes to cruising, the class of your ship plays a crucial role in determining the amenities you’ll have access to. From luxurious spas and gourmet restaurants to high-end entertainment options, the class of your cruise ship can greatly enhance your overall experience.

Additionally, class also affects cabin size, with higher-class ships offering larger and more spacious cabins for a more comfortable stay on board.

Understanding the class of a cruise ship will help you determine what amenities are available onboard. It’s important to know which class suits your preferences and desires, as it can greatly impact your overall experience. Here are some key points to consider:

  • Luxury Class : Indulge in opulence and extravagance with spacious suites, gourmet dining options, exclusive access to private lounges and pools, personalized service from dedicated staff members.
  • Premium Class : Enjoy a balance between luxury and affordability with comfortable accommodations, diverse dining choices, entertainment venues for all ages, wellness facilities like spas and fitness centers.
  • Budget Class : Experience a more economical option with cozy cabins, casual dining areas, basic recreational activities such as swimming pools and theaters.

Class Affects Cabin Size

To determine the size of your cabin, consider the class of cruise ship you choose and how it aligns with your desired level of comfort and space.

The class of a cruise ship directly affects the size and amenities available in your cabin. If you crave luxurious accommodations and ample room to spread out, opt for a higher-class ship. These ships offer spacious cabins with separate living areas, private balconies, and even personal butlers.

On the other hand, if you prefer a cozy space where you can feel snug and intimate, a lower-class ship might be more suitable. These ships typically have smaller cabins but still provide all the necessary comforts for a pleasant stay.

Choose wisely to ensure your cabin provides the perfect balance of belonging and comfort during your cruise adventure.

Factors to Consider When Choosing a Cruise Ship Class

One important factor to consider when choosing a cruise ship class is the onboard amenities and activities available. These features can greatly enhance your overall experience and ensure that you feel a sense of belonging on board. Here are some key considerations:

  • Dining options : Look for a ship that offers a variety of restaurants and dining venues, catering to different tastes and dietary preferences. This way, you can enjoy delicious meals throughout your journey, creating memorable moments with fellow passengers.
  • Entertainment : A lively entertainment program is essential for fostering a sense of community among passengers. From Broadway-style shows to live music performances and themed parties, choose a ship that offers an array of entertainment options that resonate with your interests.
  • Recreational facilities : Ensure the ship has recreational facilities that align with your hobbies or desired activities at sea. Whether it’s swimming pools, fitness centers, sports courts, or even rock climbing walls, these amenities provide opportunities to connect with others who share similar interests.

By selecting a cruise ship class that caters to your preferred amenities and activities, you’ll have the opportunity to participate in enriching experiences while building connections with fellow travelers who share your interests.

Exploring the Differences Between Luxury and Mainstream Cruise Ship Classes

When considering luxury and mainstream cruise ship classes, it’s important to note the differences in onboard amenities and overall experience. Luxury cruises offer a more exclusive and refined experience, catering to those who desire the finer things in life. The onboard amenities are top-notch, featuring gourmet dining options, spacious cabins with private balconies, and personalized service from attentive staff members. In contrast, mainstream cruises provide a more affordable option for those looking to explore different destinations without breaking the bank. While they may not have all the luxurious features of their counterparts, they still offer a range of amenities such as multiple dining venues, entertainment options like theaters and casinos, and comfortable cabins.

To give you a better understanding of the disparities between luxury and mainstream cruise ship classes, here is a comparison table:

As you can see from the table above, luxury cruise ships prioritize providing an exclusive experience with high-end amenities and personalized service. On the other hand, mainstream cruise ships focus on affordability while still offering various entertainment options for guests to enjoy.

No matter which class you choose, both luxury and mainstream cruise ships provide opportunities for you to relax and unwind while exploring different destinations. Ultimately, it’s about finding the right fit for your preferences and budget so that you can fully enjoy your cruising experience.

The Evolution of Cruise Ship Classes Over the Years

Over the years, cruise ship classes have evolved to cater to different preferences and budgets. Gone are the days where one class fits all. Cruise lines have recognized that each traveler is unique and desires a sense of belonging on their vacation at sea.

Here are some ways in which cruise ship classes have evolved:

  • Expanded Amenities : Cruise ships now offer a wide range of amenities to suit various interests and lifestyles. From luxury spas and gourmet dining options to thrilling water parks and entertainment venues, there is something for everyone.
  • Enhanced Accommodations : Cruise ship cabins have come a long way. Today, you can choose from cozy interior rooms, spacious suites with private balconies, or even multi-bedroom villas with exclusive privileges.
  • Personalized Experiences : Cruise lines understand that personalization is key to creating memorable vacations. They now offer tailored shore excursions, specialty dining experiences, and onboard activities designed to cater to individual preferences.

By evolving their classes, cruise lines aim to create an environment where you feel like you belong. Whether you prefer a luxurious experience or seek adventure on a budget-friendly voyage, there’s a cruise ship class waiting just for you.

Tips for Selecting the Right Cruise Ship Class for Your Vacation

If you’re planning a cruise vacation, it’s important to consider the different cruise ship classes and choose one that suits your preferences and budget. Finding the right cruise ship class can greatly enhance your overall experience and ensure that you feel a sense of belonging throughout your trip.

When selecting a cruise ship class, it’s essential to think about what matters most to you. Are you looking for a luxurious experience with top-notch amenities? If so, opt for a luxury or premium class ship. These ships often offer spacious cabins, gourmet dining options, and exclusive onboard activities.

On the other hand, if you prefer a more casual and relaxed atmosphere, an economy or budget class ship may be ideal. These ships typically provide comfortable accommodations and basic amenities at a lower cost.

Consider the size of the ship as well. Larger ships tend to have more onboard activities such as water parks, theaters, and multiple dining options. Smaller ships offer a more intimate setting with fewer crowds and easier access to ports of call.

Lastly, don’t forget to factor in your budget. Determine how much you’re willing to spend on accommodation, food, entertainment, and excursions before making your decision.

Guide to Royal Caribbean Ship Classes

two ships docked at CocoCay

Are you trying to figure out which of the Royal Caribbean ship classes is the best?

With a total of 25 ships (including Icon of the Seas) in its fleet, Royal Caribbean International offers plenty of options for cruisers.

Whether you’re planning a singles cruise, a family vacation, or a couple’s getaway, the Royal Caribbean ships feature amenities, activities, and entertainment options that are perfect for you.

The Royal Caribbean cruise ships are conveniently grouped together in different classes. Each of these cruise-ship classes encompasses multiple sister ships.

In other words, if you are comparing two of the Oasis class ships in Royal Caribbean’s fleet, you’ll notice that they have many similarities. The gross tonnage, passenger capacity, and deck plans tend to somewhat resemble each other within the same class of ship.

In the post below, we will break down the Royal Caribbean ship classes, so you know exactly which ships belong in each group. We will also explain the main highlights for each of these classes of cruise ships.

This way, you will know which ships offer an ice-skating rink, water slides, splash pads, etc. So, continue reading below for our ultimate guide to Royal Caribbean ship classes!

Royal Caribbean’s Ship Classes

As mentioned above, Royal Caribbean Cruise Line features several different classes of cruise ships in its fleet. We will provide a list of each class of ship below along with an overview of the amenities you’ll find onboard.

Oasis Class Ships

We will start with the Oasis Class ships, which include:

  • Oasis of the Seas
  • Symphony of the Seas
  • Allure of the Seas
  • Wonder of the Seas
  • Harmony of the Seas
  • Utopia of the Seas (Scheduled to make her debut in Spring 2024.)

The Oasis Class ships can hold more than 6,000 passengers and used to be the largest cruise ships in the world. (Royal Caribbean’s new Icon Class ships are larger, but we will discuss those in more detail below.)

The Oasis-class ships are known for their various neighborhoods, multiple dining options, and family friendly activities.

Neighborhoods

The Oasis class ships feature public areas like the Royal Promenade where cruisers can stroll through shops or indulge in their favorite beverage at one of the many bars such as the Bionic Bar. The Royal Promenade is also home to live entertainment and restaurants like Sorrento’s and Cafe Promenade.

Central Park is another popular neighborhood that offers a unique, open-air atmosphere in the center of the cruise ship. Guests can stroll along the pathways lined with foliage to visit specialty restaurants like Chops Grille, Giovanni’s Italian Restaurant, Vintages, and more.

The Boardwalk is a third neighborhood found on the Oasis class ships. Here, guests can partake in carnival games, carousel rides, and dining options like Playmakers Sports Bar or Johnny Rockets.

The Oasis class ships offer multiple entertainment options and activities for guests. From the amazing live performances in the AquaTheater to Broadway style shows in the theater, cruisers can always find something to do onboard these massive ships.

mini golf on Oasis of the Seas

Adventure seekers should check out the rock-climbing wall, Flowrider surf simulator, zip line, or Ultimate Abyss for some thrilling fun. You’ll also find activities like an escape room, mini golf, ice skating, and basketball available onboard.

The Oasis class ships (except Allure of the Seas) feature multiple water slides for guests to enjoy on the pool deck. These slides combined with numerous swimming pools allow plenty of space for cruisers to cool off during their vacation.

If you are traveling with toddlers or younger kids, you’ll appreciate the baby splash zone for diapered kids and the Splashaway Bay water slides for potty trained children.

Quantum Class Ships

The Royal Caribbean Quantum Class ships include:

  • Ovation of the Seas
  • Anthem of the Seas
  • Quantum of the Seas
  • Spectrum of the Seas
  • Odyssey of the Seas

The Quantum-class ships feature amazing shows, incredible dining options, and thrilling activities onboard. With family friendly experiences like bumper cars, rock climbing, escape room, and Flowrider, kids will never have a dull moment onboard a Quantum class ship.

Plus, these technologically advanced cruise ships offer unique dining experiences like Wonderland and Izumi. Guests will also want to take a ride in the North Star, which raises you 300 feet above sea level for some jaw dropping panoramic views.

Finally, don’t miss out on the iFly skydiving simulator, which is the only activity of its kind at sea! As you can see, even though the Quantum class ships don’t offer water slides, there’s still plenty of fun options for kids!

Freedom Class Ships

The Royal Caribbean Freedom Class ships include:

  • Liberty of the Seas
  • Independence of the Seas
  • Freedom of the Seas

These ships feature a smaller size than the popular Oasis class ships; however, they’re full of fun activities for families.

Cruisers onboard one of the Freedom Class ships can enjoy things like laser tag, Flowrider surf simulator, ice skating, sports court, arcade, rock climbing wall, and mini golf. These ships also feature water slides, including the Splashaway Bay water play area for younger kids.

Liberty of the Seas

Additionally, the Freedom Class ships offer similar dining options to the larger Oasis class ships. Some of the restaurants you’ll find onboard include Playmakers Bar and Arcade, Chef’s Table, El Loco Fresh, Johnny Rockets, and Chops Grille.

For a full guide to available dining options onboard, you can check out our post Is Food Included on Royal Caribbean Cruise Ships .

Voyager Class Ships

Royal Caribbean’s Voyager Class ships include:

  • Mariner of the Seas
  • Explorer of the Seas
  • Navigator of the Seas
  • Voyager of the Seas
  • Adventure of the Seas

These Voyager Class ships come in handy at visiting smaller ports of call that the larger mega-ships can’t quite navigate into.

Smaller ships in the Voyager Class are able to reach Caribbean islands and other ports around the world that aren’t able to hold massive ships or large numbers of passengers.

St. Thomas

Even though the Voyager Class ships aren’t as large as some of the other Royal Caribbean ships, they still offer plenty of excitement onboard. Guests sailing on one of these ships will find activities like the Flowrider surf simulator, sports court, arcade, laser tag, mini golf, rock climbing wall, and ice skating.

Additionally, Voyager Class ships feature amazing pools and water slides, except for Explorer of the Seas, which does not have slides.

Vision Class Ships

The Royal Caribbean Vision Class ships include:

  • Vision of the Seas
  • Grandeur of the Seas
  • Rhapsody of the Seas
  • Enchantment of the Seas

While these are some of the smallest and oldest ships in the Royal Caribbean fleet, they still offer plenty of great activities and amenities.

Enchantment of the Seas view from aft of ship

Some of the family friendly entertainment you’ll find onboard include a rock climbing wall, arcade, jump zone, and swimming pools.

Like the Voyager Class mentioned above, the Vision Class ships are able to visit smaller ports throughout the world thanks to their smaller size and passenger capacity.

Radiance Class Ships

Royal Caribbean’s Radiance Class ships include:

  • Radiance of the Seas
  • Brilliance of the Seas
  • Serenade of the Seas
  • Jewel of the Seas

These Radiance-class ships are on the smaller side, similar to the Vision Class ships discussed above. Radiance Class Ships offer unique itineraries around the world since they are able to navigate to smaller cruise ports.

Brilliance of the Seas

Some of the fun activities you’ll find onboard these ships are a rock climbing wall, swimming pools, mini golf, and a sports court. Although the Radiance Class ships don’t offer as many activities as some of the larger ships, many of the itineraries are very port heavy.

In other words, depending on where the ship takes you, you may be off the ship exploring more than you are on it looking for activities.

Icon Class Ships

Royal Caribbean’s Icon Class ships are the newest ships hitting the fleet. With Icon of the Seas scheduled to make her debut in 2024, this new ship will become the world’s largest cruise ship.

Icon of the Seas will feature popular Oasis class neighborhoods like Central Park and the Royal Promenade. Additionally, it will include some brand-new spots like an exclusive suite neighborhood and the Surfside family neighborhood.

Printable Cruise Planner

Royal Caribbean’s newest ship will also take its pool options to the next level. Boasting the largest waterpark on a cruise ship, a suspended infinity pool, and multiple new swimming pool features, Icon of the Seas is sure to impress all types of cruisers.

Icon of the Seas will also feature brand new stateroom and suite categories for guests to enjoy. From family cabins with bunk beds to the Ultimate Family Townhouse with a slide, cruisers will have no trouble finding a room that fits their needs.

Final Thoughts on Royal Caribbean Ship Classes

With all the amazing ships in the Royal Caribbean fleet, the task of choosing the best one for your family can feel daunting. By narrowing down the ships by class, you can get a better understanding of what each ship class offers.

Whether you’re looking for a smaller ship with a low-key vibe or a mega ship with the latest bells and whistles, Royal Caribbean provides numerous ships in each class to meet your needs.

A QUICK BREAKDOWN OF ROYAL CARIBBEAN SHIP CLASSES & HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST CRUISE SHIP

November 21, 2023 | 4 min read.

Sucheta Rawal

If you are looking to cruise with Royal Caribbean but can’t decide which of its 29 ocean-going vessels to choose from, here’s a quick breakdown for you. Royal Caribbean ship classes are broken into six groups, each constructed around the same time with the same basic design. Most offer similar amenities with slightly different looks, but understanding the classes will help you pick the right ship for your next vacation.

Royal Caribbean Oasis of the Seas cruise ship

OASIS CLASS The Oasis class ships— Oasis of the Seas ,  Allure of the Seas ,  Harmony of the Seas ,  Symphony of the Seas , Wonder of the Seas , and Utopia of the Seas —are the largest cruise ships in the world with a capacity of 9,000 crew and passengers on each. Expect mega floating cities with seven distinct neighborhoods, offering a variety of experiences to keep all ages engaged. There’s zip lining, rock climbing, waterslides, chart-topping nightlife, and over 20 specialty and complimentary restaurants.

QUANTUM CLASS Quantum of the Seas ,  Anthem of the Seas , and  Ovation of the Seas are large ships with a capacity of up to 5,600 people and a focus on action-packed onboard adventures. This is where you will find the industry’s first sky diving simulator, bumper cars, laser tag, and trapeze school at the largest indoor activity space at sea, SeaPlex®. Robotic bartenders, an all-glass observation capsule, and the first robotic entertainment at sea also make this Royal Caribbean’s most innovative class.

Royal Caribbean Spectrum of the Seas cruise ship

QUANTUM ULTRA CLASS Spectrum of the Seas  and Odyssey of the Seas are versatile ships that can go practically anywhere in the world, carrying upwards of 5,500 passengers. This class offers the signature Royal Caribbean experiences—like sky diving and surfing, resort style pools, locally inspired dining, entertainment, and more.

VOYAGER CLASS Voyager-series ships are shorter in ship length and carry around 3,100 passengers. Voyager of the Seas ,  Explorer of the Seas ,  Adventure of the Seas ,  Mariner of the Seas , and  Navigator of the Seas are ideal for those looking for short, adventure-packed vacations. Some of these ships have laser tag courses, virtual reality, bungee trampolines, and kiddie splash zones. The Navigator of the Seas also has the  longest waterslide at sea .

FREEDOM CLASS Find lots of fun activities for everyone on the Freedom-class ships— Freedom of the Seas ,  Independence of the Seas , and  Liberty of the Seas . These classic Royal Caribbean ships – that once were the largest cruise ships in the world, were the first to feature a FlowRider® surfing simulator. You will also enjoy multiple pools, eateries, shops, casinos, and spas on board.

Royal Caribbean Radiance of the Seas cruise ship

RADIANCE CLASS If you are looking to cruise with fewer people but still want a relatively big ship, opt for Radiance-class ships— Jewel of the Seas ,  Brilliance of the Seas ,  Serenade of the Seas , and  Radiance of the Seas . These smaller ships have miles of glass for amazing views and host a half-dozen restaurants, three pools, a rock climbing wall, a miniature golf course, an adults-only solarium, a spa, a casino, and a theater.

VISION CLASS Dating back to the 1990s, the Vision Class is made up of Enchantment of the Seas ,  Grandeur of the Seas ,  Vision of the Seas , and  Rhapsody of the Seas . These are some of the oldest and smallest ships in the Royal Caribbean portfolio. There are fewer onboard attractions, but departures offer a chance to visit more ports.

ICON CLASS New to the fleet and currently the largest cruise ships in the world, there are endless ways to spend your day with entertainment on stage, ice, air, and water, 7 pools for any mood you’re in, and 40 ways to dine and drink. Seriously the best of every vacation!

Each class offers unique experiences and amenities, paving the way for tailor-made cruising adventures.

Whether it’s your first time or fifth cruising with Royal Caribbean, knowing the different ship classes will help you make the most informed decision and book the perfect cruise for you…

Table of Contents

Royal Caribbean Ship Classes Overview

Royal Caribbean currently has 8 classes of cruise ships, and they all offer something different. The classes are:

  • Icon – Ships expected to be launched post-2022
  • Quantum Ultra – Ships launched between 2019 and 2021
  • Quantum – Ships launched between 2014 and 2016
  • Oasis – Ships launched between 2009 and 2022
  • Freedom – Ships launched between 2006 and 2008
  • Voyager – Ships launched between 1999 and 2003
  • Radiance – Ships launched between 2001 and 2004
  • Vision – Ships launched between 1996 and 1998

They also used to have the Sovereign Class (launched in the late 1980s to mid-1990s) and the Empress Class (launched in the mid-1980s), but all the ships in those classes have since been retired.

There are between one and five cruise ships in each class. Ships in the same class are referred to as ‘sister ships’ since they have a common foundational design.

But that doesn’t mean two ships in the same class are the same as they each have their own unique touches.

What Are The Differences In The Royal Caribbean Ship Classes?

Quantum Ultra Class is perfect for those who love innovation and grand entertainment. Ships in this class include Odyssey of the Seas, with a guest capacity of 5,498, and Spectrum of the Seas, accommodating up to 5,622 passengers.

Aboard these marvels, you can experience a variety of jaw-dropping entertainment options, like robotic bartenders, skydiving simulators, and more.

On the other hand, the newly introduced Icon Class takes vacation experiences to the next level. The Icon of the Seas , debuting 2024, emphasizes sustainability and energy efficiency.

These ships’ unique offerings blend the best of beach retreats, upscale resorts, and theme park adventures, ensuring a vacation escape like no other.

Moreover, the upcoming Star of the Seas was recently announced as the second vessel in Royal Caribbean’s Icon Class.

Scheduled to join the fleet in the summer 2025, you can expect incredible amenities and experiences that will take your cruise vacation to new heights.

Royal Caribbean Cruise Ships: Icon of the Seas

Icon Class Ships:

  • Icon of the Seas: Delivery in the third quarter of 2023. The maiden voyage is in January 2024.
  • Star of the Seas: Delivery in the second quarter of 2025. The vessel is currently under construction in Turku, Finland.
  • Unnamed third ship: Delivery in the second quarter of 2026.

The Icon-class ships, pioneered by the much-anticipated “Icon of the Seas”, are set to redefine luxury cruising.

As the world’s largest cruise ships, they offer an unrivaled sea experience, brimming with groundbreaking attractions.

Divided into eight neighborhoods, cruisers will find both beloved spaces like Central Park and Royal Promenade and five innovative additions.

Notably, the Aquadome serves as the backdrop for an enhanced AquaTheatre experience, and Thrill Island boasts six record-shattering waterslides.

A Class Apart – Innovative Design and Entertainment

Designed from the ground up, the Icon-class integrates both enhanced suite offerings and family-centric amenities.

While seasoned cruisers will recognize the signature vibes of the Royal Promenade and Central Park, the majority of the ship is a refreshing novelty.

The AquaDome is not just a space but an experience, with its majestic 50-foot waterfall centerpiece that transforms into the AquaTheater by night. Another marvel, the Pearl, offers a sensory journey as a walkway on the Royal Promenade.

The array of activities on board is staggering – from Broadway-caliber shows to a drink by the pool, ensuring every passenger is entertained and enthralled.

Living the Suite Life

The suite-exclusive neighborhood on the Icon-class ships is opulence redefined. Spanning over four decks and almost 61,000 square feet, this sanctuary offers an array of luxury accommodations, from the grandeur of the two-deck Royal Loft Suites to the contemporary Sky Junior Suite.

Guests can dine at the Coastal Kitchen, bask on the two-level sundeck, or enjoy a Mediterranean feast at The Grove.

The suite privileges also extend to a myriad of perks, from personal butler services known as “ Royal Genie ” to complimentary internet and specialty dining.

Family-Friendly Cruising

Royal Caribbean has always been synonymous with family vacations, and the Icon-class further solidifies this reputation. For the first time, Royal Caribbean ships feature a dedicated family-centric neighborhood, Surfside.

Younger cruisers are not only offered splash pools and slides but also exclusive family suites where they have their own entertainment zones.

Older kids and teens aren’t left behind either, with adrenaline-packed offerings like the Frightening Bolt slide, climbing wall, and the audacious Crown’s Edge zipwire.

Sustainability at Sea

Apart from the luxury and entertainment, the Icon of the Seas stands out as a beacon of sustainability.

It has the distinction of being the first in the fleet to run on liquefied natural gas (LNG) – the most eco-friendly cruise ship fuel to date.

Combined with Royal’s cutting-edge green technology, it takes the title of the most sustainable ship across the fleet.

Quantum Ultra Class

Royal Caribbean Ships: Spectrum of the Seas

Quantum Ultra Ships:

  • Spectrum of the Seas
  • Odyssey of the Sea

While they inherit the pioneering spirit of the Quantum Class, they offer enhanced features and amenities, making them an evolution in maritime luxury.

A Class Beyond – Unique Features & Attractions

The Quantum Ultra Class ships are not just another set of vessels; they’re an experience. Among their standout features is the Sky Pad virtual reality trampoline, a leap in cruise entertainment.

While Quantum Class ships are already revered for their indoor pools perfect for cooler climates, the Quantum Ultra takes it a notch higher with a retractable roof to let the sunshine in on warmer days.

The Playmakers sports bar, a karaoke lounge, and a dedicated tea room are added attractions, though these ships do forgo the traditional pub and teen disco.

Sailing the Seas – The Quantum Ultra Fleet

Two spectacular ships form the Quantum Ultra Class: Spectrum of the Seas and Odyssey of the Seas.

These vessels traverse diverse destinations, from the vibrant cultures of Asia to the sun-kissed beaches of the Caribbean.

Despite being in the same size bracket as their Quantum counterparts, the Ultra class can accommodate more guests, making them larger-than-life in every sense.

Activities Galore – Non-Stop Entertainment

If there’s one thing the Quantum Ultra Class guarantees, it’s that there’s never a dull moment.

From the exhilarating FlowRider Surf Simulator and the heart-pounding iFly skydiving experience to the serene views from the North Star observation pod, there’s something for everyone.

The Seaplex, a major attraction for sports enthusiasts and families alike, ensures that activities continue round the clock.

Coupled with a myriad of dining options, from specialty restaurants to complimentary delights, and the consistently enthralling entertainment in venues like the Music Hall, boredom is simply not on the itinerary.

Quantum Class

Royal Caribbean Ships: Quantum of the Seas

Quantum-Class Ships:

  • Quantum of the Seas
  • Ovation of the Seas
  • Anthem of the Seas

Leading the maritime industry in innovation, Royal Caribbean’s Quantum Class ships are true marvels on water.

These vessels have set themselves apart by introducing unparalleled features like the North Star observation pod, RipCord by iFLY skydiving simulator, and bumper cars — experiences one would never expect to find on a cruise ship.

The Quantum Revolution – Pioneering Features

While most cruise lines have followed the trend of constructing larger vessels over time, Royal Caribbean took a bold step with the Quantum Class by opting for ships that are slightly smaller than their predecessors, yet incredibly feature-rich.

Although not mammoth in size, the Quantum Class ships are still grand, accommodating up to 4,180 guests in a double occupancy setting and maxing out at 4,905 when all beds are occupied.

Tailored for Cooler Climates

Quantum Class ships are meticulously designed for sailings in colder regions such as New York or Southampton.

Their architecture favors indoor activities, boasting an indoor pool and a plethora of engaging indoor experiences, ensuring guests always have entertainment options regardless of the external weather conditions.

Ships of the Quantum Class

The Quantum Class encompasses three vessels: Quantum of the Seas, Ovation of the Seas, and Anthem of the Seas.

These ships traverse diverse routes, ranging from the icy beauty of Alaska to the sunny coasts of Australia and from the cultural richness of Asia to the mesmerizing landscapes of the Mediterranean and Europe.

A World of Amenities

Onboard a Quantum Class ship, passengers are transported into a realm of endless possibilities.

High-tech attractions like the North Star offer breathtaking 360-degree vistas, while adrenaline enthusiasts can enjoy surf simulators, bumper cars, and roller-skating.

The ships also house multiple pools and whirlpools, including the adults-only Solarium and a family pool with an enclosed area.

Dining is an experience unto itself, with a plethora of specialty restaurants, casual eateries, and an array of complimentary dining options.

The suites offer an exclusive retreat, with perks such as the Coastal Kitchen and the personalized services of the Royal Genie for top-tier bookings.

Oasis Class

Royal Caribbean Cruise Ships: Symphony of the Seas

Oasis Class Ships:

  • Wonder of the Seas
  • Symphony of the Seas
  • Harmony of the Seas
  • Allure of the Seas
  • Oasis of the Seas

The Oasis-class boasts ships that were the world’s largest until the Icon class was introduced. Accommodating over 6,600 guests, these vessels are architectural marvels with a distinctive hollow center that houses Central Park, adorned with thousands of plants.

A stroll here feels like wandering through an urban oasis, right in the middle of the ocean. Adjacent to it, the Boardwalk has a nostalgic carousel, while above, thrill-seekers zip-line across.

These ships redefine onboard recreation: from the adrenaline-pumping 10-storey Ultimate Abyss slide to the myriad of waterslides, from ice-skating to roller-skating rinks, and the AquaTheater that hosts jaw-dropping high-diving performances.

Furthermore, the Oasis of the Seas, having received a grand makeover in 2019, stands as a testament to the line’s commitment to innovation.

Distinguishing One from the Other

While all ships under this class share the signature Oasis DNA, there are unique features that set them apart.

For example, the Oasis of the Seas takes pride in its Samba Grill Brazilian steakhouse and the Boardwalk Dog House. Meanwhile, Wonder of the Seas has introduced a dedicated suite area, amplifying luxury with a private lounge, restaurant, and sun deck.

The Oasis-class fleet is expanding, with Utopia of the Seas joining in 2024, promising even more innovations.

Perfect for those who believe that bigger is better, the Oasis-class ships cater to those looking for a vast array of activities, entertainment, and dining options.

They are also suitable for travelers who want to experience a mega-resort on water, filled with action-packed days and electrifying nights.

These giants predominantly sail the crystal blue waters of the Caribbean and the Bahamas, making stops at Royal Caribbean’s private slice of paradise, ‘Perfect Day at CocoCay.’ However, they’re not limited to tropical escapades.

Some, like the Symphony of the Seas, also explore the historic charm of the Western Mediterranean.

Freedom Class

Royal Caribbean Cruise Ships: Independence of the Seas

Freedom Class Ships:

  • Independence of the Seas
  • Liberty of the Seas
  • Freedom of the Seas

A blend of classic charm and modern innovation, Royal Caribbean’s Freedom-class ships offer a rich cruising experience.

While they may not hold the “newest” label, they make up for it with the wealth of amenities they’ve incorporated following their refurbishments.

Features like The Perfect Storm Waterslides, escape rooms, and laser tag have been added, elevating the onboard experience.

Notable Features and Amenities

Freedom-class ships, though not the behemoths of the sea, are renowned for their comprehensive offerings.

Beyond the casino, spa, and swimming pools that are standard on most luxury cruises, these ships provide unique activities such as mini-golf, basketball, and ice skating.

Passengers can also enjoy Broadway-caliber shows like “Saturday Night Fever” and “Grease.”

All three ships under this class – Freedom of the Seas, Liberty of the Seas, and Independence of the Seas – underwent renovations to add modern features. Their decks are bustling with activities, from cantilevered hot tubs and a FlowRider surf simulator to water slides.

Furthermore, the culinary journey onboard is vast, with each ship housing restaurants like Chops Grille, Johnny Rockets, and Giovanni’s Table .

For those looking to indulge in theater, Broadway shows like “Grease” and “Saturday Night Fever” are available on some ships.

The entertainment does not end there: each ship also offers an ice-skating show and allows passengers to partake during designated sessions.

While the three ships were once mirror images of one another, upgrades and enhancements over the years have given each its unique flair.

For instance, Freedom of the Seas stands out with its Giovanni’s Italian Kitchen, upgraded Adventure Ocean and teens club area, and a revamped pool deck.

Independence of the Seas, on the other hand, boasts the Sky Pad virtual reality trampoline experience and a diverse range of eateries.

Liberty of the Seas is distinct with its Sabor Mexican restaurant and Tidal Wave boomerang style slide.

Radiance Class

Royal Caribbean Cruise Ships: Jewel of the Seas

Radiance Class Ships:

  • Jewel of the Seas
  • Serenade of the Seas
  • Brilliance of the Seas
  • Radiance of the Seas

Positioned as a bridge between Royal Caribbean’s colossal vessels and their more intimate counterparts, the Radiance-class ships are characterized by their sleek design, complemented by vast expanses of glass windows.

This offers passengers uninterrupted views of the ocean, adding to the allure of the cruising experience.

These ships are known for their exotic itineraries, including Alaska, the South Pacific, and even the Arctic Circle.

While Radiance-class ships may not boast the largest footprint, they shine with a plethora of offerings.

Unique features include the self-leveling pool tables, glass elevators with ocean views, and an abundance of balconies.

They also house three pools, including an adults-only solarium, rock climbing walls, a mini-golf course, and multiple lounges and bars.

All four ships under this class – Radiance of the Seas, Brilliance of the Seas, Serenade of the Seas, and Jewel of the Seas – have been designed to provide a more traditional cruise experience.

Each has over half a dozen dining options, ranging from casual buffets to specialty restaurants like Chops Grille and Giovanni’s Table.

Entertainment is rich, with theaters offering various shows and movies.

Radiance-class ships do have a degree of similarity, but their routes and select features set them apart.

For instance, the Radiance of the Seas is notable for its Samba Grill Brazilian steakhouse and the Boardwalk Dog House.

Jewel of the Seas has The Pit Stop, a sports bar unique to the class, while also being the only ship without a Royal Babies & Tots nursery onboard.

Each ship also has specific entertainment and theater offerings, making each cruise a unique experience.

These ships cater to travelers seeking a more classic and relaxed cruise experience.

Those who favor vast viewing areas, traditional cruise activities, and less crowded spaces will appreciate what Radiance-class ships have to offer.

Moreover, their smaller size allows them to access unique ports, making them ideal for passengers keen on diverse itineraries.

For those interested in a perfect blend of Royal Caribbean’s innovation and classic charm, Radiance is the class to consider.

Voyager Class

Royal Caribbean Cruise Ships: Adventure of the Seas

Voyager Class Ships:

  • Mariner of the Seas
  • Navigator of the Seas
  • Adventure of the Seas
  • Explorer of the Seas
  • Voyager of the Seas

Even though they’ve sailed the seas for around two decades, the Voyager Class ships from Royal Caribbean still boast a plethora of attractions, especially after the recent amplifications that added features like waterslides, laser tag, and escape rooms.

While each ship in this class offers a distinctive experience, they collectively bring about an unparalleled cruising adventure, presenting a blend of classic aesthetics and modern amenities.

Originally groundbreaking in their scale and offerings, the Voyager Class set new standards when introduced.

These ships are not just vast floating resorts but entertainment havens, catering to families, adventure seekers, and those wanting a tranquil escape alike.

Some signature amenities across most of these ships include the Royal Promenade with its vibrant bars, cafes, and shops; Studio B ice skating rink; rock climbing walls; and a range of specialty restaurants.

Waterslides are a notable feature on all ships except Explorer of the Seas. Notably, Navigator of the Seas boasts The Blaster, the longest waterslide at sea.

Dive into diverse entertainment options: from Broadway-esque productions, ice-skating shows, to karaoke nights and live bands.

The Studio B on all ships offers ice-skating shows, while unique activities like laser tag and the Puzzle Break Center can be found on selected ships.

Positioned as a middle ground between the older classes and the colossal new ships, the Voyager Class is perfect for both first-time and seasoned cruisers.

These ships offer a vibrant mix of activities at a more budget-friendly price point compared to the larger Oasis or Quantum Class vessels.

From families to couples, everyone can find something tailored to their interests.

Vision Class

Royal Caribbean Cruise Ships: Enchantment of the Seas

Vision Class Ships:

  • Vision of the Seas
  • Enchantment of the Seas
  • Rhapsody of the Seas
  • Grandeur of the Seas

Despite being the oldest and the smallest, these ships harbor a vintage charm that promises a return to the classic cruise experience.

With their intimate design, these vessels provide the perfect backdrop for explorers who relish a deeper connection with the sea and destinations often less frequented by larger vessels.

Vision-class ships, while not as expansive as their larger siblings, offer a rich tapestry of experiences. Standout features include the vast rock climbing walls, enchanting Centrum areas spanning multiple decks, and the signature Adventure Ocean kids club.

Ships in this class – Grandeur of the Seas, Enchantment of the Seas, Rhapsody of the Seas, and Vision of the Seas – offer a blend of traditional cruising and Royal Caribbean’s signature flair.

The dining options range from the elegant main dining room to specialty restaurants like Chops Grille and Giovanni’s Table.

Entertainment is immersive, with theaters providing an array of shows, from Broadway Rhythm & Rhyme to Tango Buenos Aires.

While they share the same lineage, each Vision-class ship boasts its own distinct character.

For example, Enchantment of the Seas stands out with its unique Jump Zone, bungee trampolines, and a suspension bridge that arcs over the pool deck.

Each ship also has its unique theatrical productions, ensuring every journey offers something new.

Travelers yearning for a serene, laid-back cruise experience will find Vision-class ships a perfect match.

These ships cater to those who cherish a closer connection to the ocean, love exploring off-the-beaten-path destinations, and appreciate a blend of modern amenities with traditional cruising.

Their smaller stature lets them dock at ports that remain elusive to their larger counterparts, offering a plethora of unique itineraries.

Introduction

Cruise ships offer a unique and exciting way to explore the world’s oceans and waterways. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing vacation or an adventure-packed journey, there’s a cruise ship that suits your preferences. From small and intimate vessels to massive floating cities, cruise ships come in various classes, each offering a distinct experience for travelers.

Embarking on a cruise ship is like entering a world of luxury, comfort, and endless possibilities. You can unwind by the pool, enjoy world-class entertainment, indulge in gourmet dining, and explore stunning destinations along the way. But before you set sail, it’s essential to understand the different classes of cruise ships and what they have to offer.

Each class of cruise ship caters to specific needs and preferences. Whether you prefer a more intimate experience or a bustling, action-packed atmosphere, there’s a ship that will suit your style. Let’s take a closer look at the various classes of cruise ships to help you find the perfect match for your next adventure.

Small Cruise Ships

Small cruise ships are ideal for travelers looking for a more intimate and personalized experience. These ships typically accommodate fewer than 500 passengers, allowing for a relaxed and close-knit atmosphere on board. With fewer guests, you can expect exceptional service and attention to detail.

Small cruise ships often have a boutique feel, with elegant décor, spacious cabins, and a focus on luxury. These vessels can navigate smaller ports and remote destinations that larger ships cannot access, providing a unique opportunity to explore off-the-beaten-path locations.

Onboard facilities may include gourmet restaurants, cozy lounges, spa and wellness centers, and enrichment programs such as informative lectures and workshops. While small ships may not have the same extensive range of activities as larger vessels, they make up for it with their intimate ambiance and personalized experiences.

Destinations for small ships can vary widely, ranging from coastal and river cruises to expedition voyages. Coastal cruises offer the chance to explore picturesque towns and cities along scenic coastlines, while river cruises take you through scenic rivers and canals, offering a unique perspective on the land. Expedition cruises, on the other hand, focus on adventurous itineraries, taking you to remote areas such as the Arctic, Antarctica, Galapagos Islands, or the Amazon Rainforest.

Small cruise ships are a popular choice for travelers who value service, intimate ambiance, and unique itineraries. They offer a more personalized experience and the opportunity to explore lesser-known destinations. If you prefer a laid-back atmosphere and appreciate attention to detail, a small cruise ship might be the perfect choice for your next vacation.

Midsize Cruise Ships

Midsize cruise ships strike the perfect balance between intimacy and onboard amenities. These ships typically accommodate between 500 and 2,000 passengers, offering a wider range of facilities and entertainment options while still maintaining a more intimate atmosphere compared to larger vessels.

One of the advantages of midsize cruise ships is their versatility in terms of destinations. They can navigate both popular and lesser-known ports, allowing passengers to explore a variety of destinations. Whether you’re dreaming of exploring the pristine beaches of the Caribbean or discovering the cultural delights of Europe, midsize ships offer a wide range of itineraries to satisfy your wanderlust.

Onboard, you’ll find a plethora of amenities and activities to keep you entertained. From multiple dining options serving gourmet cuisine to Broadway-style performances and live music, there’s always something to suit your taste. You can relax by the pool, indulge in spa treatments, workout in state-of-the-art fitness centers, or participate in enrichment programs like cooking classes or language lessons.

Midsize ships often feature spacious cabins with balconies, allowing guests to enjoy stunning ocean views and fresh sea breezes. The elegant decor and attention to detail create a luxurious and comfortable ambiance throughout the ship.

In terms of entertainment, midsize cruise ships often have options for both adults and families. You’ll find dedicated areas for children and teenagers, offering engaging activities and supervised programs to keep younger guests entertained. Adults can enjoy casinos, bars, and lounges, as well as a variety of themed parties and events.

Midsize cruise ships are a fantastic choice for those seeking a balance between a vibrant onboard atmosphere and the opportunity to explore diverse destinations. With a wide range of amenities, entertainment options, and itineraries, these ships offer something for everyone.

Large Cruise Ships

Large cruise ships are known for their grandeur and extensive array of amenities and activities. These floating cities can accommodate thousands of passengers and offer a wide range of entertainment options that cater to diverse interests and preferences.

One of the main advantages of large cruise ships is the sheer variety of onboard facilities. From multiple dining venues serving international cuisine to lavish theaters hosting Broadway-style shows, you’ll never be short of options for indulgence and entertainment. These ships often feature shopping arcades, casinos, water parks, fitness centers, spas, sports courts, and even ice skating rinks or rock climbing walls.

Onboard, you can immerse yourself in a world of fun and excitement. Enjoy live music performances, comedy shows, art auctions, or film screenings. Take part in fitness classes, dance lessons, or cooking demonstrations. With so much happening on board, there’s never a dull moment.

Large cruise ships also offer a wide range of cabin choices, from cozy interior rooms to spacious suites with private balconies. These cabins are designed to provide maximum comfort and convenience, with modern amenities and luxurious furnishings.

When it comes to destinations, large cruise ships usually follow popular routes and visit well-known port cities. They offer access to iconic destinations such as the Caribbean, Mediterranean, or Alaska, giving passengers the chance to explore famous landmarks and immerse themselves in different cultures.

It’s important to note that large cruise ships can sometimes feel crowded, especially during peak travel seasons or when sailing at maximum capacity. However, with many onboard activities and venues to choose from, you can always find your own space to relax and unwind.

Large cruise ships are a great choice for travelers seeking a wide range of amenities, entertainment options, and a bustling onboard atmosphere. If you thrive in dynamic environments and enjoy being surrounded by a diverse and lively crowd, a large cruise ship will provide the ultimate experience.

Mega Cruise Ships

Mega cruise ships are the epitome of luxury and extravagance on the high seas. These massive vessels can accommodate thousands of passengers and offer an unparalleled range of amenities and onboard experiences.

One of the main highlights of mega cruise ships is their sheer size. These floating resorts are like small cities, with multiple decks and a vast array of facilities and attractions. You’ll find grand atriums, multiple swimming pools, water parks with thrilling slides, and luxurious spa complexes offering a wide range of treatments.

When it comes to dining, mega cruise ships are a food lover’s paradise. These ships typically feature a multitude of specialty restaurants, each offering a unique culinary experience. From gourmet steakhouses to international cuisine, there’s something to suit every palate. You can also enjoy casual dining options, buffet-style eateries, and 24-hour room service.

Entertainment options on mega cruise ships are nothing short of extraordinary. You can attend mesmerizing Broadway-style productions, watch live music performances, and enjoy world-class comedians and magicians. There are also nightclubs, casinos, and bars where you can dance the night away or sip a refreshing cocktail.

Cabins on mega cruise ships range from comfortable interior rooms to extravagant suites with private balconies, jacuzzis, and personal butler service. These spacious and elegantly furnished accommodations provide a luxurious retreat after a day of exploring the onboard activities and shore excursions.

Due to their size, mega cruise ships are equipped with advanced technologies to ensure a smooth and comfortable voyage. These ships offer stability, minimizing the effects of rough seas, and provide a plethora of amenities to entertain and pamper passengers during their journey.

It’s important to note that mega cruise ships can be bustling and lively, making them ideal for travelers who thrive in vibrant atmospheres. If you enjoy the excitement of a large-scale floating resort and the opportunity to indulge in a wide range of amenities and entertainment options, a mega cruise ship will fulfill your desires for a truly unforgettable vacation.

Expedition Cruise Ships

Expedition cruise ships offer a unique and adventurous way to explore remote and rugged destinations. These specialized vessels are designed to navigate through challenging waters and take passengers to some of the most pristine and untouched corners of the world.

One of the main features of expedition cruise ships is their focus on providing immersive and educational experiences. Expert naturalists, scientists, and historians often accompany these cruises to provide informative lectures and lead guided excursions, allowing passengers to gain a deeper understanding of the destinations they visit.

Expedition cruises often venture to remote areas such as the Arctic, Antarctica, the Galapagos Islands, or the Amazon Rainforest. These regions are rich in wildlife and offer breathtaking natural beauty. Passengers can witness the majesty of polar bears roaming the Arctic ice, observe penguins in their natural habitat, encounter unique species in the Galapagos, or navigate through dense rainforest in search of rare wildlife.

Onboard, expedition ships tend to focus on functionality and comfort. While they may not have the extensive range of amenities found on larger vessels, they provide essential facilities, comfortable cabins, and cozy common areas. The emphasis is on providing a base for exploration and creating a sense of camaraderie among passengers, who often share a passion for adventure and discovery.

These smaller ships allow for more intimate and immersive experiences. Zodiac boats are often used for excursions, allowing passengers to get up close to wildlife, explore remote coves, and land on secluded islands. The flexibility of these ships enables them to reach places inaccessible to larger vessels, making each expedition cruise a unique and unforgettable journey.

Expedition cruises are ideal for travelers who have a thirst for adventure and a keen interest in the natural world. If you dream of exploring the Earth’s most remote and untouched regions, encountering unique wildlife, and gaining a deeper understanding of our planet’s ecosystems, an expedition cruise is the perfect choice for you.

River Cruise Ships

River cruise ships offer a unique and leisurely way to explore the world’s most enchanting rivers and waterways. These specialized vessels are designed to navigate narrow water bodies and provide a more intimate and immersive experience for passengers.

One of the main advantages of river cruises is the opportunity to visit picturesque towns and cities that are inaccessible to larger ocean liners. From the iconic Danube River in Europe to the exotic Mekong River in Southeast Asia, river cruise ships take you through stunning landscapes, past historic landmarks, and into the heart of charming destinations.

Onboard a river cruise ship, you’ll find a cozy and intimate atmosphere. These ships are smaller in size and typically accommodate around 100 to 200 passengers, creating a more relaxed and personal vibe. The cabins are often designed with large windows or balconies, allowing you to admire the picturesque scenery as you sail along.

While the amenities and activities on river cruise ships may not be as extensive as those on larger ocean liners, you can still expect a comfortable and enjoyable experience. Gourmet dining options, cozy lounges, fitness centers, and panoramic observation decks are common features. Onboard enrichment activities may include cultural presentations, cooking classes, and wine tastings, giving you a deeper understanding of the regions you’re exploring.

One of the highlights of river cruises is the ability to easily step off the ship and explore the destinations along the way. Guided shore excursions are often included in the cruise package, providing you with the opportunity to visit iconic landmarks, immerse yourself in local culture, and interact with local communities.

River cruises are a popular choice for travelers who appreciate a slower pace of travel and an intimate connection with the destinations they visit. If you enjoy breathtaking scenery, historical charm, and the ease of stepping ashore to explore, a river cruise is an excellent choice for your next vacation.

Choosing the right class of cruise ship can greatly enhance your vacation experience. Whether you prefer a small and intimate setting, a midsize ship with a balance of amenities, a large vessel with a bustling atmosphere, a mega cruise ship offering luxury and extravagance, an expedition ship for adventurous exploration, or a river cruise ship for a leisurely journey along picturesque waterways, there’s a ship out there that suits your preferences.

Small cruise ships offer personalized service and the opportunity to visit off-the-beaten-path destinations, while midsize ships provide a wide range of amenities and versatile itineraries. Large cruise ships offer a vibrant and bustling atmosphere with endless entertainment options, and mega cruise ships take luxury to new heights, offering a multitude of activities and facilities. Expedition cruise ships allow for immersive exploration of remote and exotic locations, and river cruise ships provide a leisurely and intimate experience along scenic rivers.

When choosing a cruise ship class, consider your travel preferences, budget, desired destinations, and the onboard experience you’re seeking. Each class has its unique advantages, and by selecting the right ship, you’ll embark on a memorable journey that aligns perfectly with your interests.

So, whether you want to relax by the pool on a small ship, indulge in world-class entertainment on a mega ship, or explore remote locations on an expedition vessel, there’s a cruise ship waiting to take you on an unforgettable voyage. Bon voyage!

You could be wondering, “Another cruise ship critique, isn’t it?” Yet, trust me when I say the Carnival Celebration is anything but usual. Having just returned from an incredible voyage, I’m confident in saying that this ship truly lives up to its festive moniker.

From the moment I stepped on board, I was greeted with a sense of excitement and anticipation. The Carnival brand is known for its family-friendly atmosphere and affordability, and the Celebration takes it to a whole new level. With its improved design and modern aesthetic, this ship offers a different and less crowded experience compared to older Carnival ships.

The headliner shows are top-notch and hosted in the impressive Celebration Central. And let’s not forget about the dining options – from quick and casual to non-complimentary venues, there’s something to satisfy every craving.

Of course, no ship is perfect, and I’ll touch on a few flaws I encountered during my journey. But overall, the Carnival Celebration is a game-changer for Carnival Cruise Line, and I can’t wait to share all the details with you.

Flaws of Carnival Celebration

The chaotic and disorganized seating for Center Stage shows was a major flaw on the Carnival Celebration. As I eagerly awaited the start of the headline shows, I found myself frustrated by the lack of order and confusion in finding a seat.

The stadium-style seating arrangement meant that views of the stage were often obstructed, causing disappointment for many attendees. It was disheartening to see technicians and sound booths blocking the view from certain angles, further hindering the overall experience.

The lack of a clear walking path due to the Ultimate Playground and occasional water spills added to the overall chaos. Despite these flaws, the energetic atmosphere and lively performances managed to overshadow the seating issues, but it was a missed opportunity to enhance the enjoyment of the shows.

Different Types of Cruise Ships Explained

We are often left in awe looking at the magnificent engineering marvels called the cruise ships. In our previous article, we had a detailed discussion about the differences between cruise ships and their former counterparts called ocean liners, which were once the only reliable means of global passenger transportation before the revolutionizing advent of aviation.

The indispensability of passenger shipping as the monopoly in public intercontinental travel gradually waned away roughly coinciding with the same timeline as the concept of ocean liners saw a departure, thanks to the flourishing of the aviation sector, and cruise ships became increasingly synonymous with passenger vessels .

cruise ships

As contrary to ocean liners which were commercial vessels for passenger transportation and sometimes carriage of cargo, mail services and other utilities regularly, cruise vessels are mostly for pleasure purposes and tourism.

They are solely dedicated to the hospitality and amenities of the passengers while onboard for vacation, excursions or pleasure. While we have described the differences between ocean liners and cruisers, let us now look at the different types of cruise ships that commonly exist.

Different Sizes of Cruise Ships

Cruise ships can be of various types and sizes. Speaking of sizes, like other cargo or general-purpose ships, passenger ships can be categorized as being of multiple sizes depending on operations, service location, purpose, passenger preference, and overall business scenario.

Furthermore, the size of the vessel is a simple indicator of the number of passengers it can sustain onboard and the extent of the facilities and amenities it can cater to.

A particular cruise line providing passenger services can also have multiple sizes of ships in its fleet based on the requirements.

different size of cruise ships

For the past decades, cruise ships have increased considerably in size and have evolved to accommodate a large number of passengers and at the same time provide a plethora of modern amenities which could not have been envisaged before.

Based on sizes and carrying capacity, cruise ships can be categorized into the following types:

Mega Cruise Ships

These are the largest of their kind and are known to accommodate more than 5000 passengers on board! When ocean liners were still predominant, cruise ships were seldom known to exceed 50000 GT in terms of their size. However, as said before, over the years with improved technology and innovation, cruise ship sizes have increased manifold.

In terms of their tonnage capacity, mega-cruise ships are very much above 135000 GT. Currently, there are more than 50 cruise ships in service having over 135000 Gt and are classified under Mega Cruise Ships. They are often distinguished by their large hull and towering superstructure sizes.

The largest designated cruise ship as of present-day is the very recent Wonder of the Seas, with a whopping gross tonnage of 236860, a length of over 360 meters, a width of 65 meters, and can accommodate nearly 7000 passengers on board!

Launched in January 2022, it is slated to create history by embarking on its maiden voyage in March. In concordance with their majestic sizes, Mega Cruise Ships house state-of-the-art facilities for passenger services, luxury, and recreation, drawing parallels to ultramodern five or seven-star rated hotels.

Mega Cruise Ships

From swimming pools to movie theatres, indoor game infrastructures to world-class health centres, casinos to large restaurants and pubs, conference halls to banquets, shopping malls to pavilions, commodious suite rooms to wellness clubs, the litany can be enough to motivate holiday-seekers to amass more on their savings and plan a dream vacation.

Moreover, it is obvious that other than catering to passenger recreation and comfort, they also offer essential services like hospitals and dispensaries on a round-the-clock basis for any unwarranted needs that may arise.

Other biggest names following Wonder of the Seas are Symphony of the Seas, which held the top spot for being the largest cruise ship till last year, Harmony of the Seas, which had its realm from 2016 to 2018, Oasis of the Seas, which ruled the lot for 7 long years from 2009 to 2016, and Allure of the Seas, which became a joint claimer to the throne since its maiden voyage just a year after its predecessor (in 2010), with comparable size and capacity (very slightly less in GT).

All these are Oasis-class sister ships with GT over 200000 and operate under the parent organization, Royal Caribbean International line, an industry leader in cruise shipping tourism and hospitality headquartered in Miami, Florida, United States.

Large Cruise Ships

These are somewhat smaller than Mega Cruise Ships and can hold anywhere between 2500 to 3500 passengers for all normal purposes. In terms of tonnage capacity, they are 10000 GT or more but mostly less than 135000 GT.

Voyager of the Seas from the slightly old Voyager-class, also owned by Royal Caribbean, is an acclaimed ship of this category, but with a borderline capacity of around 3600 passengers and approximately 137000 GT, and an overall length of 310 meters, it is also often interchangeably deemed as pertaining to the category of Mega Cruise Ships.

Similar are the cases with MSC Divina, of the Fantasia-class, having 140000 GT and 3500-passenger capacity, and another recent vessel Costa Venezia, a Vista-class cruise ship, having a GT of exactly 135000 and a passenger capacity of over 4000, quite above the demarcating line for large cruisers.

Other notable names amongst many include Crown Princess (2006) belonging to the Crown-class, having 113500 GT, Celebrity Solstice from Solstice-class, rated over 120000 GT and 2850-passenger capacity, and MS Koningsdam which roughly has a capacity of just 10000 GT can hold up to 2650 passengers with doubled occupancy.

Large Cruise Ships

Large cruise ships can be considered as relatively smaller forms of their modern, mega variants, and started coming into being over two decades back at the turn of the century. However, like the examples cited, modern-day cruisers are commonly built in this size range with more advancements in terms of technology, design, luxury, and amenities.

Cruise ships, since mostly dedicated to tours and pleasure and seldom encounter adverse mid-sea weather conditions, can have some slack in terms of powering and structural requirements as compared to their predecessors, ocean liners.

But coming-of-age cruisers, mostly mega and large ones, have broken such conventions and have showcased significant developments.

Priorities for passenger safety and comfort have seen a sharp uptick increasingly over time.

Furthermore, with the global economy rapidly changing in a direction such that the several affluent sections of the society have continued to become richer, the predilection for cruise travel for leisure has garnered more popularity.

This has converted to more profits for cruise lines, who have also taken the opportunity to rework their business models to continue with this lucrative drive by not only providing more appealing facilities to their clientele but also stepping upon their services in terms of frequent tours and venturing into deeper territories and newer destinations across longer distances.

Hence, this has led to the modern bigger fleet having sturdier structures, escalated design efficiency, and of course, enhanced propulsive applications.

Midsized cruise ships

They are smaller than their larger counterparts, appear like their somewhat scaled-down versions, and can hold around 1500-2500 passengers. These ships have GTs of less than 100000 and more than 50000. Large global shipping lines do not go less than this category.

Likewise, they are also replete with most of the amenities and facilities sought for, though on a comparatively lesser scale. They may occasionally ply between continents and oceans but mostly travel on an intracontinental country to country basis or between different ports of call in a country.

Midsized Cruise Ships

In terms of powering and structure, they are also on the lower side of bigger vessels but aesthetically they are equally attractive. A large number of vessels under this category are in operation globally. Carnival Spirit, having a tonnage of 88500 GT and a complement of over 2100 passengers, and Pacific Explorer, of approximately over 77000 GT and 2000-passenger capacity, both owned by Carnival Plc., are popular vessels in this category.

Smaller Midsized Cruise Ships

These ships can also be considered on the lower spectrum of midsized cruisers. Mostly similar, they have tonnages more or less around 50000 GT or lower and can accommodate 800-1500 passengers. They are mostly intended for intracontinental or intranational travel and do not venture into very high seas. They are also capable to travel in shallow drafts like rivers, canals/channels or lakes apart from seas.

Smaller Midsized Cruise Ships

They also feature passenger pleasure and recreation attributes, but on a much-reduced scale, like small pools, indoor gaming rooms, dining and party halls, restaurants, bars, fitness centres, card rooms, conference lounges, kids’ game zones, etc.

There are numerous vessels of this type all around the world without any widely notable names. Viking Star-class Sister ships Viking Sea, Viking Star and Viking Sky, operated by Viking Ocean Cruises, and having slightly less than 50000 GT are some frontrunners in this category.

Small Cruise Ships

Any cruise vessel having a passenger-carrying capacity of less than 700-800 are coined as a small cruise ship. These ships ply in rivers, estuaries, channels, canals, confined water bodies like lakes, and sometimes in seas along or near to the coast within a specified limit.

As expected, these vessels are not structurally and functionally fit to venture into deep seas. Different kinds of bodies from liners to regional or national tourism providers operate these vessels on a time-to-time basis. The duration of a voyage in these cruisers range from a few hours to at most a day or two. As for small cruisers, the facilities onboard are limited and depends on the size of the vessel and operationality.

For larger vessels on the upper side of the capacity spectrum, for instance, 500-800, amenities for luxury and entertainment are present, though not on a scale similar to supreme level cruise ships. For even smaller cruisers with a passenger capacity of around 100-200 or lesser, most of the amenities are absent and mostly operate on an hourly basis to or from a destination or are rented out for some special occasions.

Small Cruise Ships

Often, they have a high demand and run on a rush booking order due to their small size and low, attractive fares. India has plenty of these vessels often in coastal areas like Mumbai, Chennai, Cochin or popular tourist destinations like Goa or the world’s largest riverine delta and mangrove reserve, Sundarbans in West Bengal. Ferries, which are exclusively referred to as small to moderate-sized vessels for carrying passengers, often along with cars and vehicles across a body of water, can be considered to belong to the last two categories.

Tonnages for ferries vary widely and can be anything as significant as over 50000 GT or as low as hardly 1000 GT. They may be intended for point-to-point or round trips with or without stops. Ferries comprise a significant part of the public transport system in several places.

As alluded to in the previous article, the concept of ferries was first conceived in Istanbul during the 19th century and can be rightfully considered as being precursors to the widespread popularization of modern-day cruise ships superseding the era of ocean liners.

Types of Cruise Ships Based on Purpose

Though cruisers are primarily categorized based on sizes, they may also be divided based on purpose, operation, and utilities.

Mainstream Cruise Ships

These types of cruise ships are the vast majority of all cruise ships that carry passengers for leisure and tours. In a broad sense, these cruisers can be anything between mega to smaller midsized with differences as described above.

Mainstream Cruise Ships

Some also tend to further categorize these vessels based on the degree of luxury and amenities from ultra-premium to semi-deluxe. They can be oceangoing, coastal or river-plying and can cater to a wide range of trips of varying durations as explained above.

Adventure Cruise Ships

Adventure Cruise Ships

These are customized and bespoke small vessels for adventure lovers. Most of these vessels are either privately owned or are lent by agencies or dealers at certain rates. Often people set out in groups in these 10-50 passenger-capacity vessels for a myriad kinds of activities from whale watching to exploring reefs and islands. Though strictly not permitted to venture beyond certain sea limits, concerned authorities may sometimes give extra relaxations looking at sea and weather conditions or the ‘fitness’ of the vessel.

River Cruises

They are shallow-draft and low-width vessels belonging to the small cruiser category and are capable of plying in rivers for passenger tours and pleasure. They are mostly for an hourly basis and operate daily.

River Cruises

Due to their small sizes, they do not pose a major obstruction to river traffic and can manoeuvre easily when required. Other than the iconic Venice in Italy, famous rivers around the world like Nile, Amazon, Hudson, Thames and Danube offer cruise services regularly.

Hotel Ships

They mainly remain afloat in water or travel small distances and are chiefly floating hotels for a luxury experience. Most hotel ships are on rivers or seasides hemming cities and popular tourist destinations. They are generally not very big but sometimes can be exceptions when converted from large vessels out-of-service.

Hotel Ships

For example, Queen Elizabeth 2, which was the last oil-and-steam fired ocean liner of its kind, has been converted to a massive luxury floating hotel in Dubai after her retirement in 2008 following 40 years of operation. When on a sea coast, they remain anchored to a particular place as they are not deemed to sail. But on rivers, because of the low depth and calmness of the water, they can travel as well.

Expedition Cruises

They are specially designed vessels for venturing into the most uncharted and inhospitable places on earth like the polar regions. They are built as per ice-class regulations and everything from powering to systems are incorporated in such a way that they can sustain in harsh conditions. Such cruises are limited and only specifically authorized people are permitted to travel to such extreme locations.

Expedition Cruises

Yachts and private crafts: Such vessels are privately owned by affluent sections of the society who prefer to spend their leisure time in the water. Usually, they are quite small in size and are suited to accommodate around 20-30 people at most within the owner’s family or close circles.

Do Modern Cruise Ships Have First Class? (History, Premium Areas – Cruise Line Guide)

If you’re taking a cruise you may be wondering if they have any sort of class system onboard.  In this article we look at how ships have changed from the first, second and third class system operated by ocean liners, and look the modern day equivalent – exclusive areas only accessible to guests staying in the most expensive suites onboard.

We also explore the more exclusive, small cruise lines that offer a “first class experience” to wealthier guests.

Do Cruise Ships Have First Class?

Modern cruise ships don’t have first, second, and third classes in the traditional sense but many cruise lines do have premium areas only accessible to those who have paid extra to stay in the most exclusive areas of the ship.

A guest on a cruise will never be referred to as being in ‘first class’ regardless of the ticket that they buy.

Did Cruise Ships Used to Have First Class?

Ocean liners, the forerunners to cruise ships, were passenger ships that operated mostly between continents. They were built as a method of transportation for people, cargo or mail, rather than as a voyage for enjoyment.

Ocean liners were predominantly split into 3 classes – first, second and third (or steerage).

RMS Queen Mary

Passengers had to remain in their own, allocated parts of the ship.

First class was the most luxurious and exclusive part of the ship, reserved for celebrities, royalty and the wealthiest in society.  They often used ocean liners for holidays or leisure.

There are many, many famous Ocean liners including the ill-fated Titanic, and her sister ships the Olympic and the Britannic.

All had a similar class system in operation.

What Was First Class on a Ship Like The Titanic Like?

First class passengers on the Titanic travelled in the ultimate luxury.

Amenities found on the first class deck included:

Parisian Café A La Carte Restaurant Tea Gardens Heated Swimming Pool Gymnasium Library Squash court Barbershop Kennels for dogs A Smoking Room Turkish Baths Dining Saloon Reading and Writing Rooms An enclosed promenade deck to walk and sit on.

titanic promenade deck

To learn more about what a swimming pool on an ocean liner would have been like, check out the swimming pool onboard the Queen Mary: Inside RMS Queen Mary’s Swimming Pool – Real Photos, Design, and Deaths

Many first class passengers had their pets with them on the voyage, three dogs survived the sinking of the Titanic!

As was standard at the time, many of the first class bathroom facilities were shared. Communal lavatories with illuminated signage could be found along the passageways, divided by gender. A passenger could take a bath by notifying a steward, who would run the bath for them.

Because of the need to conserve limited fresh water supplies, baths were supplied with sea water. Titanic had a good ratio of private bathrooms to passengers, more than any other ship in 1912.

Virtually all of the suites on B and C Decks featured en-suite bathrooms.

What Was Second Class on a Ship Like The Titanic Like?

Often second and third class areas were built closer to the ship’s engines, meaning that when a ship was at full speed, vibrations could be felt throughout these areas.

Second class area on ships often had a library, smoking room and an elevator and the third class had their own smoking room and common area.

Second class staterooms were very comfortable, featuring oak painted paneling, linoleum floors, mahogany furniture usually consisting of a large sofa, wardrobe, and dressing table with washbasin, mirror, and storage shelves.

All the taps were connected to huge freshwater tanks located deep within the ship. Shared staterooms were segregated by sex, so that single women or men often shared staterooms with one another.

Unlike first class, which offered many staterooms with private bathrooms, second class bathroom facilities were all shared. Communal lavatories and bathrooms were separated by companionways (steps leading from one deck to another) and divided by sex.

A bath could be had on request to a steward and bed linen was changed daily.

What Was Third Class on a Ship Like The Titanic Like?

Third class was far simpler in its design, though relatively comfortable, and usually held the majority of passengers, with many using ocean liners to emigrate.

Third class cabins on the Titanic had running water and electricity. Steerage passengers were provided with meals, whereas most steamships that carried steerage passengers at the time required them to bring their own food!

Passengers could clean up in their cabins in a wash basin.  However, only two bathtubs served all 700-plus third class men and women.

Bunk beds in third class had mattresses, pillows, and blankets, but no sheets or pillowcases. Cabins slept up to 10 people.

Single men and women were split up at the front and back with families in the middle.

Why Doesn’t the Traditional ‘First Class’ on Cruise Ships Exist Anymore?

Segregation is difficult and expensive.

Having different classes of passengers on a cruise ship would require physical segregation on the ship. You would need dining/entertainment areas that were only accessible to first class guests, for example. That would mean there were several venues that could  only  profit from that class of guests.

Those venues would need to be staffed, so the cruise lines would need to employ more costly staff, and provide accommodation for them.  This would hit their profits with little gain.

Class Systems Don’t Work The Same Way

Times have also changed. Although you may still be aware of class systems, it doesn’t have the same status as it once did.

Working class people can become middle and upper class by gaining a good education and going into a respected profession.

Nobody Wants to be ‘Third Class’

People are now travelling solely for leisure purposes, rather than to travel cheaply from point A to point B.  They would not want to be referred to as ‘third class’ as this is seen as quite a derogatory term.

The cruise lines want to market their cruises as affordable luxury, not as a third-rate experience.

This Doesn’t Mean That There Aren’t Premium Areas

While most cruise line no longer have “classes” i.e. Titanic style. They do still have different grades of service. Many major cruise lines are working to provide higher levels of service to those willing to pay.

For example, the amenities you receive while in a suite on Royal Caribbean are much different than if you booked the cheapest inside cabin available.

Depending on the ship and class of suite purchased, these can range from something as simple as access to a suite lounge with happy hour and a special dining room for breakfast and lunch to an all-inclusive full access, where everything is included, including the minibar.

Do Modern Cruise Ships Have Separate Areas For Guests Paying a Premium?

The majority of mainstream cruise lines now have separate, exclusive areas for guests who are happy to pay a premium.

Examples of what is offered by different cruise lines are listed below:

Celebrity Cruises – The Retreat For Suite Guests

Suite guests have exclusive access to the “Luminae” restaurant at The Retreat. They can also have afternoon tea event hosted in The Retreat Lounge.

Guests receive complimentary 24-hour in-suite dining, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

They have a personal Retreat host and an onboard retreat Concierge service who can help to arrange specialty dining reservations and procure shore excursion tickets, and can even answer general questions about ports of call.

Guests get priority check-in, departure, and port tendering/boarding along with reserved theatre seating on Evening Chic nights.

MSC – Yacht Club (Top Sail Lounge)

MSC Yacht Club is a premium selection of cabins found onboard most MSC ships.

  • Unlimited drinks in bars and restaurants outside the Yacht Club.
  • Yacht Club passengers also have access to a private pool area and an alfresco bar serving food.

Concierge staff will make reservations for alternative dining venues and spa services, arrange private shore excursions and facilitate onboard shopping. Plus, your cabin’s personal butler, available 24 hours a day, will cater to your whims; he or she can help with unpacking, serve you afternoon tea and bring you your preferred newspaper daily.

This lounge is always open.

Norwegian Cruise Line – The Haven

The Haven is the all-suite section of Norwegian Cruise Line ships, accessible by keycard-holders only.

The Haven allows passengers to enjoy everything from a private bar and lounge to a custom restaurant, secluded sun deck and calm courtyard, without ever leaving the suite complex.

Guests have access to a private concierge desk and adjacent cocktail lounge, as well as an exclusive restaurant and outdoor courtyard.

The exclusive sun deck is at the very top of the ship and typically forward, meaning it’s the perfect place to sunbathe in peace or have a drink while you sail into a new port.

You don’t even have to leave for meals because The Haven includes its own, sophisticated restaurant, serving its clientele with a breakfast, lunch and dinner menu designed just for suite passengers.

Included in your cruise fare are the services of a concierge and butler. Priority embarkation, debarkation, seating at shows, and dining reservations are also included.

They offer concierge services, full front desk services are available to concierge-level passengers, plus the concierge can help with shore excursion, specialty dining and Lotus spa reservations.

Suite guests also get priority embarkation & disembarkation at the beginning and end of the cruise.  Priority disembarkation at tender ports, priority onboard shore excursion reservations and a priority Line at the Guest Service Desk.

Royal Caribbean – Concierge or Diamond Club Lounges

Every Royal Caribbean ship is equipped with a Concierge or Diamond Club lounge.

Passengers must be Diamond Plus or Pinnacle Club members of the Crown & Anchor Society, or be booked into select suites to access the Concierge Lounge and receive Royal Caribbean suite perks.

A continental breakfast is served in the Concierge Lounge every morning from 8 until 10 a.m., and hors d’oeuvres and petits fours are served before and after dinner.

Enjoy exclusive access to complimentary drinks and bottles of wine around the ship with a daily bar tab and complimentary access to the Thermal Suite in Redemption Spa.

Cunard – Grill Suites

Cunard offer a  Grills Lounge and Terrace with a peaceful atmosphere and plenty of space.  You can dine in the Queens Grill restaurant each evening or indulge in the Queens Grill afternoon tea.

A Grills concierge service is offered.

Optional in-suite dining is available from the Princess Grill menu.

How Much Does it Cost to Upgrade to a Suite With Access to Premium Areas ?

Prices vary greatly from one cruise line and Itinerary to another.

Below I have compared a balcony cabin with a Suite cabin so that you can get an idea of the difference in cost.

Virgin Voyages

August 2022 Virgin Voyages Valiant Lady, Mediterranean Sea Terrace   £1557  ($1870)

Rockstar suite £2978 ($3575)

September  2022 Cunard Queen Mary 2 Transatlantic balcony cabin from £2399  ($2879)

Princess Grill suite £5149 ($6181)

It’s important to remember that as suites often come with other benefits these costs should be taken into account. For example, if a suite includes drinks, it may be worth adding the cost of a drinks package to a regular cabin to compare.

On occasion, it is cheaper to book one suite that holds many than multiple regular cabins. It’s always worth checking.

Are There ‘First Class’ Cruise Lines?

There are a range of luxury cruise lines to choose from.

Arguably people are now split between cruise lines rather than between different classes on one ship.

There are many luxury cruise lines to choose from, including:

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Regent Seven Seas Cruises say they are “ the only truly all-inclusive luxury cruise line “ They include Unlimited Shore Excursions to explore however it suits you, and they sail to the over 450 ports of call that we sail to across the globe.

Ships hold around 750 passengers and over 550 crew.

Oceania Cruises

Oceania cruises say:

“Each of our voyages is an invitation to discover your next travel story and reignite your passions. Experience faraway places that you have always dreamed of. Encounter new ways of looking at the world and travel to the far corners of the globe”.

They offer tours that they say will “immerse you in the heart of the destination’s culinary and cultural traditions.”

Typically ships hold in the region of 1250 guests and have a crew of around 800.

Silversea’s small luxury ships are designed for those “who delight in the thrill of discovery while indulging mind and body in the most lavish surroundings imaginable.” All accommodations are spacious, ocean-view suites that include butler service, and most include private verandas.

Silversea voyages and cruise expeditions sail to over 900 destinations on all seven continents, more than any other cruise line.

Silversea’s cruise ships hold between 300 and 600 passengers, but they also do smaller “expedition” cruises that hold between 100 and 250 guests.

Viking advertises that you can “Experience the world in depth, and at a relaxed pace.”

Their small-sized, elegant, 930-passenger ships give passengers access to fascinating ports that larger ships cannot reach. Their ocean and world cruises “traverse six continents and offer enriching cultural experiences.”

Cruise ships typically have 930 guests and over 450 crew members.

viking cruises umbrella

Pioneered small-ship, ultra-luxury cruising, and say they continue to “represent the pinnacle of that unique style of travel.”

Their fleet of intimate, all-suite ships, carries between 458 and 600 guests each, and sail to desirable destinations at their peak seasons.

A multi-award-winning cruise line, Windstar Cruises operates a small fleet of boutique-style masted sailing ships and small all-suite yachts, and travels extensively around Europe, North and Central America, and the South Pacific.

With their slogan “180° from ordinary”, Windstar Cruises prides itself on outstanding service, destination authenticity, and exclusively personal travel experiences.

Ships typically have between 150 and 310 guests aboard.

Scenic say that “luxury comes as standard” if you travel with them. They provide award-winning service to our cruise guests and promise “We go to the Nth Degree for your comfort, luxury, and satisfaction.

Gourmet meals, exceptional service and unforgettable excursions and experiences are all included in the price – guaranteeing total relaxation and cultural immersion on water and land.”

Ships hold an average of 200 passengers and over 170 crew members.

Do Loyalty Programs Give Guests Premium Status?

Many cruise lines give regular passengers the opportunity to join their loyalty programs, allowing them to access a number of free benefits or perks without paying extra.

Free specialty meals, free laundry, free gifts – perks vary from one cruise line to another and loyalty tier you are a member of.  Always worth researching these, and MSC have a loyalty match programme, where you can take your loyalty status from another cruise line and they will match it to their own.  A little like being a VIP with no extra cost involved!

To learn more about MSC Status match, check out this post: MSC Status Match – Step by Step Application Guide and Chart

Some Cruise Lines Have Different ‘Grades’ of Cabins With Extra Perks

Msc – cabin experiences.

There are several levels of service on MSC, depending on how much you pay when booking.

Basic is Bella, slightly higher grade is Fantastica and more exclusive is Aurea.

Aurea grade also gives you access to the solarium and discounts on spa treatments . Room service varies according to the package you have booked – Bella can use the service but are charged delivery.

The delivery itself is free in the Fantastica and Aurea for room service. The items on the menu are chargeable, with the exception of the very limited breakfast menu served between 07:30 and 10:00.

I always book the cheaper grade when cruising with MSC. To find out how this worked for me on my last MSC cruise, check out this video:

Alaska Cruise Port Will Enforce Passenger Limits Starting in 2026

Andrea Santillan

Andrea Santillan

  • April 5, 2024

During Juneau’s last cruising season, a record-breaking 1.6 million cruise ship passengers visited the Alaskan capital.

But how will the introduction of cruise passenger limits affect its ability to welcome guests?

cruise ship in juneau, alaska

According to Juneau Tourism Manager Alix Pierce, there are no hard numbers yet. However, Pierce is optimistic since cruise lines have already committed to a conceptual agreement that places a cap on the number of daily passengers.

She added that once the agreement is finalized and approved, it will be implemented in 2026.

Aside from reducing the number of cruise ship passengers, Pierce shared that local officials are trying to make Saturday the least congested day of the week for Juneau.

Local authorities are also using the negotiations to discuss issues the city has been experiencing regarding congestion and hot berthing (when a cruise ship leaves and is replaced by another on the same day).

Alaska’s other attempts to regulate the cruise industry

juneau alaska street

Last year, Juneau succeeded in introducing a 5-per-day limit on large cruise ships . In February 2024, the city announced that it was able to radically reduce cruise ship trash from 2019 to 2023 by 92%.

However, not all of Alaska’s attempts to regulate the cruise industry have flourished. In 2023, a resident also tried to impose a limit on the number of cruise guests that Sitka could host. From 560,000 cruise ship visitors, it proposed to introduce a cap of only 240,000 passengers per cruising season. The proposal was rejected by the city last October.

Juneau made a similar move to significantly regulate cruise ship passengers in 2021, but it failed because it wasn’t able to gather enough signatures.

According to a 2023 Economic Impact report , Juneau received over $22 million in revenues associated with cruise ships in 2023.

The Norwegian Jewel, owned by Norwegian Cruise Line, in June 2005.

Norwegian Cruise captain refused to let eight passengers who were late reboard ship

Passengers, who have since rejoined vessel, missed scheduled departure time from São Tomé and scrambled to reunite with ship

Eight cruise passengers had to scramble to reunite with their cruise ship after being left behind in São Tomé and Príncipe.

The passengers, including a pregnant woman and a paraplegic traveller, missed their scheduled departure time from the island of São Tomé in the Gulf of Guinea, about 250km off the coast of Gabon, after disembarking the Norwegian Dawn to take a local tour.

Another passenger in her 80s was reportedly late to the ship because she was receiving emergency medical treatment on the island.

The vessel, operated by Norwegian Cruise Lines, arrived in São Tome on Wednesday morning having departed Cape Town for the three-week cruise to Barcelona on 20 March.

The group’s private day excursions on the island ran overtime and, despite the efforts of the local coast guard, which motored the group to the ship before it set sail that afternoon, the captain would not allow the late guests to board.

Jill and Jay Campbell, from Garden City in South Carolina, described attempting to board the vessel after arriving late.

“We have never had an experience like this before,” Jill Campbell told ABC4 News .

“The harbour master tried to call the ship, the captain refused the call. We sent emails to NCL, the NCL customer service emergency number. They said, ‘Well, the only way for us to get in touch with the ship is to send them emails, they’re not responding to our emails,’” Jay Campbell added.

“The captain could have made an easy decision to turn one of the tender boats back, pick us up, safely load us, and then go on the way.”

The travellers’ passports were returned to them via port authorities. The group, which reportedly includes two Australians, had to leave their medication, bank cards and other belongings on board. The Campbells said they were the only members of the group with a Visa card and had paid more than $5,000 in their attempts to reach the ship.

They aimed to reboard the Norwegian Dawn in the Gambia the following Sunday but low tides prevented the ship from making the scheduled stop. The group reportedly travelled through six countries and eventually met the ship in Dakar, Senegal, the final west African port call of its journey, according to the cruise line.

“What we looked at was some type of van transportation for eight people, the quadriplegic woman included,” Jay Campbell told ABC15 . He described having to take a ferry to get into Senegal, and then a four-hour drive.

Australians Doug and Violeta Sanders were among the stranded passengers.

“It’s been the worst experience of our lives to be abandoned like that in a strange country, can’t speak the language,” Violeta Sanders told Seven’s Sunrise program.

“We have no money, our credit cards aren’t accepted.”

The 21-day cruise is due to end in Barcelona on 10 April.

A spokesperson for Norwegian Cruise Lines said it was a “very unfortunate situation” and that it was the passenger’s responsibility to be back on board the ship no later than one hour before the ship’s scheduled departure time.

A Sydney travel lawyer, Anthony Cordato, said passengers needed to heed ships’ tight schedules.

“Terms and conditions would make returning to the ship on time essential,” he said.

“From a consumer’s perspective, it’s harsh but from a ship’s perspective, are you going to hold up the cruise for an hour or two because they were slow to get on board? Are you going to inconvenience 1,000 passengers for the sake of four?”

The cruise company said all eight guests had rejoined the ship.

In a statement, a spokesperson said: “On the afternoon of March 27, 2024, while the ship was in São Tomé and Príncipe, an African island nation, eight guests who were on the island on a private tour not organized through us missed the last tender back to the vessel, therefore not meeting the all aboard time of 3pm local time. While this is a very unfortunate situation, guests are responsible for ensuring they return to the ship at the published time, which is communicated broadly over the ship’s intercom, in the daily print communication and posted just before exiting the vessel.

“When the guests did not return to the vessel at the all aboard time, their passports were delivered to the local port agents to retrieve when they returned to the port, as per the regular protocol. Our team has been working closely with the local authorities to understand the requirements and necessary visas needed for the guests to rejoin the ship at the next available port of call. Given that these guests were on a private tour and did not return to the ship at the communicated all aboard time, they are responsible for any necessary travel arrangements to rejoin the ship at the next available port of call, per our protocol.

“While the eight guests made arrangements to rejoin the ship in Banjul, Gambia on April 1, 2024, unfortunately the ship was unable to safely dock in the destination due to adverse weather conditions, as well as tidal restrictions that require specific timing for safe passage. While we share in our guests’ disappointment, this modification was made with great consideration for their safety and that of our crew, which is our top priority. We contacted these eight guests regarding this itinerary adjustment and provided them with authorization to rejoin the ship at Dakar, Senegal on April 2, 2024.

“Despite the series of unfortunate events outside of our control, we will be reimbursing these eight guests for their travel costs from Banjur, Gambia to Dakar, Senegal. As of this morning, all eight guests have rejoined the ship.”

'The ship can move': Why you should watch next solar eclipses from a cruise ship

cruise ship passenger classes

Cheers broke out on Holland America Line’s Koningsdam ship when the total solar eclipse began on Monday.

Off the coast of Mazatlan, Mexico, passengers were perched on loungers, reclining on beach towels and lining the railings of Deck 14 with cameras on tripods at the ready. When the sliver of fiery orange that remained of the sun disappeared, a black circle ringed by white light took its place. Passengers applauded the moment they'd been awaiting since the ship departed from San Diego on Friday.

The sunny, 72-degree weather – quintessential cruise weather – gave way to chilly wind and late morning’s best impression of sunset. The horizon line glowed orange in the dusky sky.

Cruise ships can help take guests to the path of totality for eclipses, allowing passengers to get a prime viewing spot and make a vacation of it.

What is a total solar eclipse?

A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon completely blocks the face of the sun as it moves between the sun and Earth.

While the sun is about 400 times bigger than the moon, the moon is roughly 400 times closer to Earth. “In the past, the moon was much closer, and in the future, the moon will be much further away,” said Adam Burgasser, a professor of astronomy and astrophysics at the University of California, San Diego, and director of the Cool Star Lab, who served as an onboard expert during the cruise. “And so we're in a special time, which, of course, lasts for billions of years, where it's set up just right to block out the sun.”

Total solar eclipses take place about every 18 months on average, but the last one visible from the U.S. was in 2017 .

The phenomenon creates a multi-sensory experience, with a cold front moving in ahead of the eclipse. “You block the sun, and it gets cold,” said Burgasser. “It’s actually just that simple. And it's slow enough that the atmosphere can react.”

Plants and animals respond, too: Birds often begin to chirp, plants may close up, and nocturnal will come out. “It’s kind of an all-around-you experience where it's not just the fact that the sun has been blocked that’s so fascinating, but just the effect it has on the entire environment.” Those effects weren’t easily discernible on Koningsdam, though, which was about 150 miles from shore.

Nicole Chaput, a 57-year-old passenger from Calgary in Canada, said partial and total eclipses are “totally different.”

“I heard someone describe it as being partly pregnant,” she said. “You can’t do it. There’s no comparison.”

What makes a cruise a good place to see an eclipse?

Bad weather can wreck even the best-laid viewing plans. If a city in the path of totality has overcast skies, it can be tough to quickly move to an alternate site.

“If you're on a cruise ship and a little bit farther to the east or a little bit farther to the west along the path, there's clear sky, the ship can move,” said Dan Jarrell, who was on the cruise with his wife, Kay, and friends. The Washington, D.C.-area resident has seen solar eclipses with friends during two other sailings, including on Holland America’s Veendam in 1998.

“If you're on land and there's not a road there, you’d better have a tank,” Jarrell said.

That’s where a cruise ship comes in handy. “Having the ability to map out based on what the current weather is where you can catch the eclipse, and having a range over the course of the ocean where you could chase that a little bit is certainly helpful,” Burgasser added.

Capt. Ane Smit, Master aboard Holland America’s Zaandam for the viewing, said the ship can move at a maximum of 20 knots, so the crew needs to scout out the conditions with enough time to move as needed.

“If it's not good enough, we really need to start finding another spot because we are not the quickest vehicle, of course, to be driving around, but we have the luxury of being able to go in any direction without any restriction,” he said. “It’s a pretty wide highway that we have.”

The view of the horizon also allows passengers to “see that shadow coming in and leaving more so than you can in a topographical area,” said Burgasser. Being in the ocean away from city lights is also helpful for seeing stars and other parts of the sky usually only visible at night.

The cruise line also made the practicalities of watching an eclipse easier: eclipse glasses were distributed to guests’ staterooms and Burgasser guided guests through the event via the ship’s speaker system, before and after totality.

More eclipse cruises on the horizon

If you missed your chance to see it this time or want another go, Holland America has more eclipse-viewing opportunities on the books.

“Guests have reacted positively to our 2024 eclipse cruises and with the next full eclipse in 2026 we plan to have three sailings in Europe that will align with the path of the eclipse,” Paul Grigsby, the line's Vice President of Deployment & Itinerary Planning, said in an email. Details have not yet been released.

Other cruise lines offer similar opportunities as well. Princess Cruises' Emerald Princess was near Koningsdam on Monday.

Chaput, the Canadian passenger, said she’s been “chasing” total solar eclipses since seeing her first one in 1991. Monday’s eclipse marked her seventh viewing and second on a cruise ship.

“I think it’s just such an amazing natural phenomenon,” she said. “It’s seeing science in action.”

Eight passengers stranded on African island after Norwegian cruise ship left without them

A dream cruise vacation has turned into a nightmare for eight passengers left stranded on the African island of São Tomé and Príncipe after their ship left without them because they were late to return from a private tour.

The tourists — six from the U.S. and two from Australia — were aboard the Norwegian Dawn, a Norwegian cruise line ship , which departed from Cape Town, South Africa, on March 20 for a 21-day voyage up the coast of Africa set to end in Barcelona, Spain, on April 10.

But on Wednesday, the group of eight tourists was late to return to the ship by more than an hour for the all-aboard time of 3 p.m. from a private excursion on the island, which was not organized by the cruise line.

Jay and Jill Campbell of South Carolina were part of the group that was left behind.

They said that their tour’s operator notified the cruise captain that they were going to be late to rejoin the ship and that the local Coast Guard tried to get them on the vessel but that they weren’t allowed to board.

As a result, the couple and the rest of the group have been stranded for days on the island off Nigeria, grappling with language, currency issues and complicated travel to catch up with the ship.

“The lovely people of São Tomé were very gracious, very hospitable. They had reached out as much as they could to help us find hotels,” Jay Campbell said on NBC's "TODAY" show Tuesday morning.

“We were able to get to a tour agency there to arrange flights to the next port of call. ... Very difficult process — you’re dealing with multiple languages, language barriers, you’re dealing with different currencies ... finding someone that even has dollars ... trying to get an agent to understand where we need to get to.

"It’s one of those ‘You can’t get there from here,’" he added.

A Norwegian spokesperson called the incident a “very unfortunate situation” and said, “Guests are responsible for ensuring they return to the ship at the published time.”

The cruise line said that after the guests failed to return, their passports were delivered to local port agents, in line with protocol. The company said it was working with local authorities to understand “the requirements and visas needed for the guests to reboard the ship at the next available port of call.”

On Monday, the guests had made arrangements to rejoin the ship in Banjul, Gambia, but the ship was unable to safely dock there because of “adverse weather conditions” and “tidal restrictions,” Norwegian said. The guests were then contacted and provided with information to rejoin the ship at Dakar, Senegal, on Tuesday.

Jill Campbell said they traveled through seven countries in 48 hours to arrive in Senegal on Monday night.

But the couple was reconsidering whether they even wanted to return to the cruise.

"We are considering whether or not we are going to board the ship. It is in dock here in Senegal," she said. "We believe there was a basic duty of care that they had forgotten about, so it does concern us."

"After what we witnessed, we truly believe that although there’s a set of rules or policies that the ship may have followed, they followed those rules too rigidly. I believe that they really forgot that they are people working in the hospitality industry and really the safety and well-being of the customers should be their first priority," she added.

Ultimately, the eight passengers did rejoin the cruise before 8:30 a.m. ET Tuesday in Dakar, Senegal, Norwegian told NBC News in an e-mail Tuesday evening, after this story originally published.

Norwegian said the passengers were responsible for making their own travel arrangements to rejoin the ship.

"Despite the series of unfortunate events outside of our control, we will be reimbursing these eight guests for their travel costs from Banjur, Gambia to Dakar, Senegal," a cruise line spokesperson said in a statement. "We remain in communication with the guests and are providing additional information as it becomes available."

A silver lining of the catastrophe was that the Campbells were able to connect with another Norwegian Dawn passenger — Julia Lenkoff, 80 — who was also left on the island, but for a medical reason.

Lenkoff was on a different day tour Wednesday. She had "medically disembarked" from the cruise to seek local treatment on that day, Norwegian said.

Norwegian said that its care team tried to call Lenkoff several times and was unable to reach her and that it worked with its port agent in São Tomé and Príncipe for updates on her health.

The Campbells met Lenkoff and were able to put her in contact with her family in California, who flew her home — a move Lenkoff's daughter said "saved her life."

"She's a world traveler. She travels all the time. So this was going to be one of her bucket list trips, because she's been to 120 countries so far, and she wanted to get to 130," her daughter, Lana Lenkoff Geis, said in an interview that aired Tuesday on "TODAY."

Norwegian said Lenkoff was escorted on a flight to Lisbon, Portugal, then put in the care of airport staff members to continue her journey back to the U.S., where she has safely returned.

Norwegian Cruise Line passengers were stranded on a small African island after missing a deadline to re-embark

  • A couple says they were stranded on an island after missing their cruise ship's boarding time.
  • They were on a tour of São Tomé and Príncipe with six others, per US local media. It overran.
  • The stranded group flew to Gambia on Sunday, hoping to catch the ship at another port.

Insider Today

A couple says they were stranded on a small African island after they missed a cruise ship 's boarding deadline, according to local media.

Jay and Jill Campbell, from Garden City, South Carolina, described their ordeal with a Norwegian Cruise Line ship in an interview with WPDE, their local ABC affiliate.

Norwegian confirmed to Business Insider that they were denied boarding, saying it was their responsibility to be on time.

The Campbells said they were frequent cruisers, embarking on Norwegian Dawn on March 20 for their third voyage with the cruise line in a year.

However, an excursion last Wednesday with six other people to São Tomé and Príncipe , an island nation of some 220,000 people off West Africa, took an unfortunate turn.

The couple says the tour overran, and its operator informed the captain that eight passengers were running late.

They were refused entry to the ship upon their return, according to WPDE, even though they could still see the ship from the shore.

The ship was anchored, Jay Campbell said, but the captain refused to let them board despite repeated calls and emails by the passengers to the ship and the cruise line's emergency hotline.

The São Tomé and Príncipe Coast Guard even took the passengers to the ship, but they weren't able to get on and had to turn back, WPDE reported.

In total, WPDE said that nine passengers were not allowed to reenter the ship, including four elderly people and one person who is a paraplegic.

The Campbells told the news outlet that the ninth passenger was late for another reason — an 80-year-old woman who got a concussion on the island and was hospitalized there.

Related stories

Most of the stranded passengers didn't have their medication or working credit cards, WPDE said.

The Campbells, who had a working card, said they covered $5,000 worth of expenses for the group in food, toiletries, and hotel bills.

"We have never had an experience like this before," Jill Campbell told WPDE.

The Norwegian Cruise Line said in a statement provided to BI by email that eight guests on the tour missed the last tender back to the vessel.

The cruise line said the passengers missed the "all aboard time of 3 p.m. local time." It said it was a "very unfortunate situation" but that passengers were responsible for being on time.

It added that the deadline to return was "communicated broadly" over the ship's intercom, in printed communications, and on posts shown at the exits of the ship.

The elderly passenger who was concussed was returned to the US, where she has made a "safe return," a spokesperson for Norwegian Cruise Line said.

According to WPDE, the group flew to Gambia on Sunday, hoping to rejoin the ship at another port.

A spokesperson for the cruise line said that the ship could not safely dock in Gambia due to adverse weather conditions, adding that efforts are being made for the guests to rejoin the ship in Senegal on Tuesday.

Though cruise ships need to stay punctual, ruined-vacation stories like this are a reputational risk and might put people off.

For instance, two MSC Splendida passengers were stranded last summer at an Italian port after arriving too late for departure.

A TikTok video showed the couple waving and begging the crew to wait for them, even though the gangway appeared to have already been removed.

Other passengers may face the stress of becoming stranded in remote locations through no fault of their own. Last September, more than 200 people got stuck in a remote part of Greenland after their cruise ship ran aground.

And last November, passengers were stranded at a Brisbane port after a Royal Caribbean ship was overbooked.
