Tears for Fears Announce 2023 North American Tour

By Jazz Monroe

Tears for Fears Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith

Tears for Fears are heading out on a summer tour of North America. The Tipping Point Tour Part II kicks off in Atlantic City, New Jersey, on June 23, and wraps up six weeks later in Los Angeles. Cold War Kids will support on all dates.

Tears for Fears returned in 2021, announcing The Tipping Point —their first album in 17 years—and explaining that “before everything went so right with this album, everything first had to go wrong. It took years, but something happens when we put our heads together.” They began touring the record last year, playing shows with Alison Moyet and Garbage.

Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith of Tears for Fears.

Tears for Fears: The Tipping Point review – an elegant, long-awaited return

(Concord) The veteran pop duo process difficult times on this beautifully crafted, if not quite catchy, new album

E ighteen years after its predecessor, and five years after Roland Orzabal first announced it, the seventh Tears for Fears album (and the second with Curt Smith back on board) is finally upon us. Its gestation has been far from smooth: Orzabal’s first wife died in 2017 and he suffered a bout of ill health immediately afterwards. Meanwhile the band’s former management were discouraging them from making a record at all (as detailed in the lyrics of the sarcastic Master Plan). So The Tipping Point ’s very existence is a triumph of sorts.

All that time spent working on these songs is apparent: the arrangements are unfailingly lush, the musicianship beyond criticism. And there are plenty of moments to savour here: My Demons throbs in a manner that’s improbably reminiscent of Goldfrapp circa Supernature , thanks to new collaborator Sacha Skarbek’s synths; the title track unflinchingly recalls Orzabal’s bereavement; the uptempo End of Night is as uplifting as songs about the Mistral are likely to get. But while it all sounds impeccably polished, it lacks the sort of killer hook that used to consistently elevate them above their mid-80s peers. The end result finds elegance trumping excitement.

Tears For Fears Announces 2023 North American ‘The Tipping Point Tour Part II’

tears for fears tipping point tour setlist

Today, iconic British duo, Tears For Fears, have announced their North American 2023 summer tour — The Tipping Point Tour Part II – with special guest Cold War Kids. Produced by Live Nation, the 22-city tour kicks off on June 23 at Hard Rock Live at Etess Arena in Atlantic City, NJ making stops across North America in New York, Toronto, Houston, Seattle, and more before wrapping up in Los Angeles, CA at the Hollywood Bowl on August 2.

ears For Fears – Roland Orzabal (vocals, guitar, keyboards) and Curt Smith (vocals, bass, keyboards) formed in Bath, England 1981. With 30 million albums sold worldwide, performing to countless sold-out audiences, and winning various awards, the band represent an inimitable intersection of pop palatability, clever and cognisant lyricism, guitar bombast, and new wave innovation. Their 1983 debut The Hurting yielded anthems such as “Mad World,” “Change,” and “Pale Shelter,” reaching RIAA Gold status in the United States. 1985’s Songs from the Big Chair became a watershed moment for the group and music at large. Boasting the signature BRIT Award-winning “Everybody Wants to Rule the World,” “Shout,” “Head over Heels,” “Mothers Talk” and “I Believe (A Soulful Re-Recording),” it went quintuple-platinum and captured #1 on the Billboard Top 200. Slant dubbed it one of, “The Best Albums of the 1980s,” it was featured in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, and Consequence of Sound awarded it a rare A+ rating in a 20-year retrospective.1989’s Seeds of Love proved to be Orzabal and Smith’s last collaboration together until Everybody Loves A Happy Ending in 2004, which rekindled the creative fire between them. The band engaged in a three-year touring whirlwind across North America, Japan, South Korea, Manila, and South America beginning in 2010.

2013 saw them return with their first recorded music in a decade: a cover of Arcade Fire’s “Ready to Start.” The band returned once more in 2017 with the Rule The World best of collection, which once more catapulted the band back to the upper echelon of the UK album charts. The duo’s DNA remains embedded within three generations of artists on both subtle and overt levels. Quietly casting a shadow over rock, hip-hop, electronic dance music, indie, and beyond, The Weeknd infused “Pale Shelter” into Starboy’s “Secrets,” David Guetta sampled “Change” for “Always,” and Drake utilized “Ideas as Opiates” as the foundation for “Lust For Life,” while Ally Brooke Hernandez, Adam Lambert, and Gary Jules recorded popular covers of “Mad World” and Disturbed took on “Shout,” and that’s only to name a few. Lorde cut a haunting cover of “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” for the Soundtrack of the blockbuster The Hunger Games – Catching Fire, which Tears For Fears gleefully would use as intro music live and thus bring everything full circle.

Meanwhile, classic songs figure prominently everywhere from The Wire and Donnie Darko to Straight Outta Compton and Mr. Robot. Long before they became a cultural cornerstone Tears For Fears simply consisted of two school friends growing up in Bath, Somerset UK.

With the release of their first album in almost 20 years The Tipping Point in 2022, the 40th anniversary of The Hurting and with more touring on the horizon, Orzabal and Smith remain as loud as ever, while yet another generation gets ready to “Shout” with them all over again.

Tears for Fears

Tears for Fears frontman Roland Orzabal was nearly moved to tears about halfway through the band’s set at the Kia Forum in Inglewood, Calif., on Saturday.

“Seeing you guys singing along is incredible,” he told the audience during a stretch of new material. In the streaming age, easy access to on-demand music means fans can familiarize themselves with the new music of their favorite artists from yesteryear. Still, Orzabal and co-founder Curt Smith didn’t seem prepared for the reaction.

“That’s very touching for us,” Orzabal said after opening with the rootsy “No Small Thing” and the album’s punchy title track.

The duo’s pride and confidence in their new songs was palpable throughout the evening. Seven of the set’s 19 songs were from the band’s latest album, The Tipping Point , a critically acclaimed and commercially successful collection of all-new material that shows the English duo remain creatively relevant 40 years after they hit the U.K. charts with “Mad World.”

After a trio of songs from their heyday in the ’80s – the Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hit “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” from 1985’s Songs From the Big Chair and “Sowing the Seeds of Love” from 1989’s The Seeds of Love , with the 2004 track “Secret World” between them – the band confidently returned to material from its first new album in nearly 18 years. Both Orzabal, now with white, flowing hair and a scruffy beard, and the youthful Smith seemed to have found a creative fountain of youth at age 60. Both on record and onstage, the duo is energized.

Trending on Billboard

“It’s OK to get older, more mature,” Smith said in a moment of introspection before the band confidently tore into a quartet of new songs: the wistful “Long, Long, Long Time,” aided by longtime backup singer Carina Round, the supple “Break the Man,” the bombastic “My Demons” and the soaring “Rivers of Mercy.”

Many of Tears for Fears’ peers from their most successful era are decades removed from compelling songwriting and performing on ’80s cruises packed with one- or two-hit wonders. Orzabal and Smith aren’t a typical ’80s band, though. Their U.S. chart success extended to other decades: “Break It Down Again” from 1993’s Elemental reached No. 25 on the Hot 100, and The Tipping Point reached No. 8 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, equaling The Seeds of Love ‘s highest mark (and No. 2 on the Vinyl Albums chart). That new generations of fans have discovered the band over the years was evident in the multitude of generations represented by concertgoers – this isn’t a mere oldies act playing MTV hits of yore. The current tour, stopping in arenas and amphitheaters, is a testament to Orzabal’s and Smith’s ability to craft artful music, as well as to their onstage chemistry. Both are skilled musicians – Orzabal on guitar, Smith on bass — and owners of remarkable singing voices that remain resonant and limber.

In earlier tours before the band went on COVID-19 hiatus, Tears for Fears concerts typically had about 16 songs from most of the group’s six previous studio albums and a cover of Radiohead’s “Creep.” At the Kia Forum, and in the previous eight shows in the U.S. tour, the band dropped “Creep” to make room for new material while keeping what have become cornerstones to their live performances. After Orzabal led the audience in a rendition of “Happy Birthday” for his wife Emily, Smith tore into a pulsating version of “Mad World” from The Hurting , one of the band’s best-known songs – thanks in part to the Michael Andrews and Gary Jules version from the Donnie Darko soundtrack in 2001 and covers by the likes of Adam Lambert and Demi Lovato – and a concert staple despite their version never reaching the Hot 100.

The duo’s longtime touring band helped Orzabal and Smith ignite the crowd midway through the set. Backup singer Round was mesmerizing in “Suffer the Children” from The Hurting and “Woman in Chains” from The Seeds of Love . Guitarist Charlton Pettus, drummer Jamie Wollam and keyboardist Doug Petty were given room to shine in the blues- and jazz-drenched “Bad Man’s Song” from The Seeds of Love . Concert mainstay “Pale Shelter” from The Hurting only reinforced the band’s deftness at switching from American roots to the British new wave of its early history. “Break It Down Again” further roused the crowd before “Head Over Heals,” which reached No. 3 on the Hot 100 in 1985, sent the audience into a frenzy.

“You’re making this one hell of a homecoming,” said Los Angeles resident Smith, soaking in the crowd’s applause, after the band returned for a three-song encore: “End of Night” from The Tipping Point , “Change” from The Hurting and “Shout,” a Hot 100 No. 1 hit in 1985 from Songs From the Big Chair . After the band’s West Coast swing, the tour resumes Thursday night (June 9) in West Palm Beach, Fla., goes north through to Chicago on June 16, and runs from Philadelphia on June 21 to Boston on June 22 before turning back to Holmdel, N.J., on June 24 and Jones Beach in Wantagh, N.Y., on June 25. A U.K. tour begins at the QEII Arena in Telford on July 1.

The tour will take the band on a US journey, with stops in New York, Toronto, Virginia Beach, Franklin, Houston, Seattle and Palm Springs. It’s sure to be an incredible experience for both the band and their fans alike.

Michael Cohen testifies in Trump hush money case

After 4 decades, tears for fears is still making music for a 'mad world'.

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

"Shout." "Everybody Wants to Rule the World." "Head Over Heels." If you grew up in the 1980s, Tears for Fears — the British duo of Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith — were inescapable.

But even if you didn't grow up in the 1980s, you've still probably heard them, because it seems like a tune from their 1982 album "The Hurting" has been about as inescapable as they once were: "Mad World."

"'Mad World' has taken on a life of its own," Smith, 60, acknowledged to TODAY, noting that it's been included in movies ("Donnie Darko"), video games ("Gears of War") and covered by Adam Lambert on "American Idol," just for a start. " "So many people have covered it, it's ridiculous. But that's the thing about older songs — they can take on new meaning."

New meaning is a good way to look at Tears for Fears' latest album, "The Tipping Point," the first original release in nearly 18 years. While the duo have gone through extended breakups, they came back together to tour in 2000, then released "Everybody Loves a Happy Ending" in 2004, ostensibly to put a period on the end of decades of playing together.

But it's been tough for Orzabal, who's also 60, and Smith to say goodbye: They've been playing as a team since they were 14 years old, and that's a lot of shared history. But a few years ago, events on an international and personal scale caused them to rethink whether they might try making fresh, original music again.

"Roland's wife (Caroline) had passed away, and I'd known her since I was 13," says Smith. (Caroline Orzabal had lived with depression and alcoholism.) "Then there was the beginning of the pandemic, and we'd been through the rise of the right wing worldwide, Brexit, Black Lives Matter, climate crisis — so we decided if we didn't have anything to write of substance, we didn't have any business writing at all."

That became their starting point. "Once you know what it is you're aiming for, the process becomes easier," he says.

Initially, though, their target wasn't clear and they allowed their muse to be dictated by "business people" about what might be a success. In the late 2010s, they had a whole album of material that didn't work for them, and bought it back from the record label to prevent it being released.

Then they started over again.

Eventually, Smith and Ozabal found a group of songs that not only said what they wanted to say, but sounded like they had a purpose. "Tipping Point" should please longtime Tears for Fears fans with its lush production and clever lyrics. The band has always been fond of a perfect pop hook but also simultaneously unafraid to color outside the lines both sonically and emotionally.

That said, don't expect that there's some big reunion story between Orzabal and Smith that might make for a great climax in some biopic of the pair. They spent their teenage years and 20s as kids from Bath, U.K., who made it big with their first two albums (1983's "The Hurting" and 1985's "Songs from the Big Chair"), but success exacerbated their personality conflicts and money made it possible to — as Smith is unafraid to do — walk away. They released "The Seeds of Love" in 1989, then spent the rest of the century disconnected, the classic band lineup effectively over. (Orzabal continued to record as Tears for Fears without Smith for a time.)

"We're very different people," says Smith of his relationship with his music partner. "Even after 46 years of working together, I don't know how to describe Roland. He lives in the moment. I think he explained it well when we won the Ivor Novello Award last year: He described me as the brake to his accelerator, which is pretty much how it works."

Making it big in the 1980s also helped Smith clarify who he was, and he discovered he did not like being a big fish in the small pond of Bath.

"I was living in this huge house in my home town and I went through a divorce," he says. "All that money did not bring me happiness in any shape or form."

He relocated to New York and met his future second wife, Frances. They now live in Los Angeles and have two daughters together, Diva, 23, and Wilder, 21. Smith is also a naturalized U.S. citizen.

And during the pandemic, he went viral with a video of himself playing a classic Tears for Fears tune with Diva on guitar. What was it? "Mad World," of course. ("Donnie Darko" star Jake Gyllenhaal shared it on Instagram.)

And now, Smith and Orzabal are set to hit the road again in America and the U.K., with a tour that starts in late May and runs until September. Only this time, they finally have some fresh material to share.

"It's taken us 40 years to appreciate how we work together," says Smith. "We spent far too much time and energy over the years butting heads, when weirdly we're only trying to achieve the same thing. Once we get the balance right, it works fantastically. After all, you can't get very far with just a brake. It requires a driving force."
