Bruno Mars Romps Through 'Moonshine Jungle' Tour in Philadelphia: Live Review

One of the most impressive things about Bruno Mars’ performance on Monday night at Philadelphia’s Wells Fargo Center was, in fact, the list of songs that he left off the set list. The 27-year-old has been famous as a solo artist for roughly three years, and has already reached a point in his career where he can shrug off a No. 1 smash (“Nothin’ On You,” his B.o.B duet), a “Twilight” anthem (“It Will Rain”) and a fan favorite (“The Lazy Song”) in his live show, simply because his arsenal of songs is strong enough to allow the oversights. Don’t let the perfectly coiffed hair and easygoing smile fool you: as his 87-date Moonshine Jungle world tour gets underway — the Philadelphia show was the run’s second stop, after beginning in Washington D.C. on Saturday night — Mars has become a stone-cold hit machine who has rattled off a staggering amount of ubiquitous singles over the course of two albums and a few extracurricular appearances. He is an efficient, impeccable star that has thrown a bunch of timeless influences into a blender and jammed his finger down on the ‘high’ button. His sophomore album, “Unorthodox Jukebox,” confirmed that he is an enduring pop personality, while the Moonshine Jungle tour, his first headlining arena trek, may turn him into an international superstar in a way that hasn’t happened since Lady Gaga through a Monster Ball a few years ago.

As Mars’ collection of radio hits and audience size have concurrently swelled, so has his production budget, although the main tenets of his stage show are still the same as when he wanted to be a billionaire so freakin’ bad. Mars’ biggest asset as a performer has always been his ambidextrousness, and in his current stage show, the singer holds high notes, leads choreographed dances, plays electric guitar, plays acoustic guitar, plays drums, engages the crowd and even flirts with some ladies in the front row. He’s a convincing “whole package” kind of pop artist, and like an ace Pixar movie with “in” jokes for parents, he expertly caters to his older and younger demographics at his live shows. The parents get the Motown callbacks, demure sexual come-ons and an old-school R&B montage that includes Soul For Real’s “Candy Rain” and Ginuwine’s “Pony”; the kids get their favorite radio hits and a messenger that radiates positivity. And if you don’t think Mars has younger fans, just wait until the lights dim before his show — the little-girl shrieks reach decibel levels typically reserved for Justin Bieber.

Trending on Billboard

The “Unorthodox Jukebox” tracks that Mars had yet to play live sounded swell. “Moonshine” kicked off the evening with animated parrots flapping their wings in slow motion on a giant screen behind Mars; “Show Me” turned into an extended reggae jam complete with red, yellow and green adorning all corners of the stage; and “Gorilla,” although an odd selection for a set closer, is clearly a favorite of Mars’, as he lost his mind while perched upon an elevated platform with pyrotechnics blasting off behind him. Mars’ band, led by his bespectacled and underrated production partner Philip Lawrence, made themselves just as crucial to the performance as the frontman by keeping the energy high and mugging for the audience at just the right moments. Everyone in the eight-piece setup appeared to be having a tremendous time as Mars zipped through instruments and zigzagged between ornately constructed dance tracks (“Runaway Love”), wrenching ballads (“When I Was Your Man”) and songs that fell somewhere in between (“Grenade”).

“We wanna see y’all moving, we wanna see y’all dancing… maybe, just maybe, put your camera phones down and get into it!” Mars commanded early in the show. It was a reasonable request — after all, Mars’ lifeblood is entertaining and keeping smiles plastered on the faces of his onlookers, and he does a better job at it than almost anyone working in music right now. His pop tracks may not possess enriching messages, but his tirelessness and dedication must be appreciated when seen in person. And appreciate it they did: when all was said and done, the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia roared with a collective dizziness usually reserved for the all-too-occasional Flyers playoff win.

Here is the set list from Bruno Mars’ June 24 performance in Philadelphia:

Moonshine Natalie Treasure Money (That’s What I Want) / Billionaire Show Me Candy Rain (cover) Our First Time / Pony Marry You If I Knew Runaway Baby Young Girls When I Was Your Man Grenade Just the Way You Are

Bruno Mars

Time Out says

Bruno Mars comes to Philadelphia on the heels of putting out what is arguably the song of summer 2017: “24K Magic.” This tour bears that single’s name and promises to make for an evening of energetic, funky, oh-so-danceable tunes from the consummate showman. Look out for other excellent singles from the album such as “Treasure,” “That’s What I Like” and the sexed-up “Versace on the Floor.”

Bruno Mars is the stage name of Peter Gene Hernandez, a producer, singer and songwriter born on the 8th of October, 1985 who hails from Honolulu, Hawaii, U.S.A. Since debuting in 2009 he has become one of the most musically diverse and commercially successful pop stars in the world.

If there’s one thing that makes the current pop charts an exciting place to be it’s the return of pop’s great auteurs. The renegades who can make a delicious pop single out of the most far flung hooks and long dead genre’s, we need to hang on to the likes of Pharrell Williams, Kanye West, and our current topic Bruno Mars, for as long as we can. It’s very telling that the thing that unites all of those artists that I just mentioned is the fact that they all got their breaks as ground-breaking producers. Their time spent engineering every aspect of other people’s songs meant that they’re free to experiment, and Mars does so more than any of them.

Mars was born into a musical family, and by the time he was five years old he was performing four nights a week with his family’s band The Love Notes. He made a name for himself with a dead on Elvis Presley impersonation, but it was a later obsession with Jimi Hendrix that lead him to pick up the guitar and start writing songs. At the age of 17 he graduated from high school and moved to Los Angeles to pursue a full time career in music, everything looked to be going his way as he signed a contract with Motown Records in 2004, the year after he made the move, but it was not to be the case.

Music industry fumbling meant that Mars went nowhere with his solo career but made one crucial contact in the form of Phillip Lawrence, with whom he would later team up with to form his production group The Smeezingtons along with Ari Levine. The trio hustled around LA writing and producing hits for The Sugababes, Travie McCoy and Sean Kingston among many others, but it wasn’t until 2009 when Mars started making guest appearances on those songs, and in 2010 they caught lightning in a bottle with B.O.B’s “Nothin’ On You”, not just written and produced by Mars’ trio, but with its killer hook sung by Mars himself.

With a serious amount of buzz generated by “Nothin’ On You”, Mars released his debut E.P “It’s Better If You Don’t Understand” in May of the same year. A couple of months later his single “Just The Way You Are” reached the summit of the Billboard Hot 100 and the hits have kept on coming since then. “Grenade”? “Treasure”? “Locked Out Of Heaven”? “The Lazy Song”? There just doesn’t seem to be any way of stopping this once in a generation talent, and he’s still yet to reach his prime, either on record or in his blistering live shows. Highly recommended.

Live reviews

I went to a Bruno Mars concert last night, and I thought it was great. When I first got there, everyone was really hyped up and excited, and the mood was contagious. The merchandise were cool, though it was very expensive (but what else do you expect at a concert?). Aloe Blacc went on before Bruno and sang some of his famous songs, and later came out to sign autographs. When Bruno finally came out, he did so with a big bang (literally, it sounded like a gunshot). Throughout the concert, he remained energetic, and would also stop every once in a while to talk to the audience. He made the audience feel like he was glad to be there and was having a good time with us. Bruno Mars' sings many types of genres, including pop, reggae, soul, R&B, and pop rock. He has many different and original songs, one about getting his money stolen to another upbeat song about being lazy. Some of his more recent songs have a few cuss words, for example his song Gorilla. He made sure to sing the songs with cuss words toward the end of the concert, when all of the younger kids would have most likely left already. He actually surprised the audience quite a bit with this. He had a fake ending; said goodnight and thank you for coming, and 5 minutes later came back out and sang some of his expletive songs. Overall I loved this concert, and I highly recommend you go too!

There is no doubt that Bruno Mars is one of the top male singers today. And if you haven't been to see him in concert, you're really missing out. His live performances are extremely entertaining.

Many people don't realise that he's more than just a singer: his dance moves are smooth, and when he plays a drum solo, the girls cannot stop screaming! Honestly, you would think he was famous for his drum playing because he is just that good. Bruno Mars is very talented.

He's also easy on the eyes ;) He's good looking and he usually wears a James Brown-type style suit which is very fitting since he dances like James Brown too. You can't help but dance along when he's performing “Runaway”, or to sing along when he's performing “Just The Way You Are”. Also, his band is perfect: when they're backing him up, there is so much energy. He keeps it simple while giving a performance of a lifetime, no matter what the event is.

Bruno Mars' live performances make me happy. I love him and I love how talented he is. He gives his performances his all, and never disappoints. When he's done, you can't help but to give him a standing ovation and beg for more. Once the concert is over, you can bet you're going to go home and listen to Bruno Mars even more.

The Bruno Mars concert was seriously phonominal. He is such a great performer and a great singer. He's so so so good live. Him and the hooligans are amazing. They're really funny and they dance a lot and it's so good! I really think that man can do anything and pull it off. If you go to the concert you will not regret or forget it. It's so memorable and such a great time. There are lots of suprizes during the whole concert and it really keeps you on your feet. He's amazing and if he ever comes back to my city or anywhere near it I'm going to be there. He did a variety of different songs. He did reggae, his slow songs, his faster songs (like Natalie, Gorilla, etc). He even covered some songs (like bump and grind and other classics) he didn't sing the whole songs but he did the best parts of the songs he covered and mixed it together. It's very hard to explain but that was very memorable. There was singing, fire, glitter confetti, dancing, Bruno Mars and the Hooligans... What else could you want? Did you know in Honolulu Hawaii where 'Bruno' was born as 'Peter Gene Bayot Hernandez'? Hope you go to the 'Moonshine Jungle Tour because it's amazing! Have fun!

Overall, the Bruno Mars concert was an incredible experience. The fact that he could sing like a dove, play a mean guitar lick, AND dance his pants off - all at the same time - blew me away. I was kept entertained all night long.

The great thing about Bruno's set is that although it was short and focuses mostly on his most recent album, it was the most diverse set I've ever seen performed at a concert; from covers to original songs, Bruno sang pop, rock, disco, doo-wop, R&B, hip-hop, reggae, and soul, delivering every genre with the same vigor and excitement.

The next best thing about the concert besides Bruno himself was his band, the Hooligans. Not only were they talented singers and performers, but also they also danced and laughed with Bruno like old buddies, making the concert seem much more like an intimate gig with friends.

This concert was perhaps one of the best concerts I've been to and that says a lot since I just turned 59 and 365 days (it's still difficult for me to admit that I'm X0 years old.... I saw Jimmie Hendrix in concert, Moody Blues, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Cream, Miranda Lambert, Lady Antebellum, Jason Aldean, Siberian Orchestra, Johnny Mathis and many many more artists and this concert ranked in the top 5. The dancing was fantastic, his stage presence and how he played with the crowd (mostly the ladies) was FUN!!!! His drum solo-words cannot describe it... I only wish I could see him tonight in Milwaukee (I live in Wisconsin) at Summerfest tonight. I would go again to see him....Aloe Blacc was great also!!!!! Thanks for asking.

The Bruno Mars concert was amazing! The only fault that I would say is that there was a lot of waiting Dua Lipa was right on time and it felt like when’s Bruno coming?! Then after Dua Lipa we had to wait for them to set Bruno up which felt like forever, but when he was out there it was amazing he had fireworks and amazing dance moves and his singing was just amazing. He even added some comedy in there, and he was putting his absolute all you could see by the sweat on his body. After we thought it was over but he surprised us with an extra song :) it was an experience of a lifetime and I must say for my first concert it was A M A Z I N G ! For the merchandise I feel some of it was just a bit overpriced like the hats.

I spent $256 on a ticket and flew from Florida to Las Vegas to see this fiasco of a show. The show was supposed to start at 9. The curtain finally rose at almost 9:30. The drums and bass were so loud, little of the vocals could be heard. The band was off several times, there was limited choreography, 2 solos (drum and piano, neither of which were Bruno, OBVIOUS TIME FILLERS), and the show lasted one hour and 15 minutes. TOTAL WASTE OF MONEY!!!! IT SUCKED!! I am used to hearing songs sung at concerts, not stopped mid-way to laugh and joke. Bruno Mars needs to go to some REAL concerts so he can see how to please his PAYING AUDIENCE. Go get some lessons from Pink, Elton John, who ever, Bruno, cause your show is a joke!!

It was an absolutely amazing night! The performance was stunning and the atmosphere was filled with laughter and happiness. Bruno Mars did an incredible job, by making sure everybody was having a party, and you could just see how much he loved standing on that scene and singing to the crowd. Also I am not going to forget Anderson.Paak who played just before Bruno went on stage. Andersson.Paak made sure, that everyone were ready for the big party, and he too is an incredible musician. Bruno Mars even learned how to say "I love you" in danish, which made us feel even closer to him. I will never forget this night!

It was awesome!!!!!

Bebe Rexha was there and Nick Jonas and who we were all waiting for BRUNO MARSSSS!!!

I was soooo happy when Nick Jonas sang one of his songs from Camp Rock!!!!

Bebe Rexha sang Me, Myself, and I, I love that song!!! I just think it wasn’t necessary to say some bad words while she spoke, but thats ok because it’s BEBE REXHA!!!

Bruno Mars was I-N-C-R-E-D-I-B-L-E!!!!!

He sang all of my favorite songssss and ne sang UPTOWN FUNK!!!! AWESOME!!!!

Overall, it was the best concert of my life, even though we could have been in better seats, and I even got a souvenir t-shirt!!!!

The concert was AWESOME! The opening person was really good and did a lot with the audience. She talked to the people not as a pop star but as a person. Her song choices really set the mood and went from sad songs to happy songs and did a outstanding job. For Bruno Mars him self did super good. His back up people were an awesome addition to the show. The record thing was a really cool idea. The show was a little delayed because it didn't start until like 15 after 8. Other than that the show was awesome and set the bar very high for the people after him. love you Bruno Mars

Bruno Mars: 'The Apollo Theater Is A Magical Place'

November 28, 2017 / 1:48 PM EST / CBS Philadelphia

James Brown, Michael Jackson and Ella Fitzgerald. These are just a few legends to perform at the iconic Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York. You can now add  Bruno Mars to the list. The 5x Grammy Award winner is coming to the Apollo for his first television special called "Bruno Mars: 24K Magic Live At The Apollo." Mars filmed the special during a few off days from his 24K Magic world tour and the electrifying primetime performance begins with him atop the Apollo's landmark marquee.  The 32-year-old is one of the hottest artists in music today and was just nominated for six Grammys.

Mars spoke to CBS Local's DJ Sixsmith about his earliest memories of the Apollo, why this theater is such a magical place and why 24K Magic was the perfect album to use for a TV special.

DJ Sixsmith : How did this special come together on CBS?

Bruno Mars: CBS wanted to rock and I said let's go. I wish there was a better story, but that's it.

DS: Everyone has a special connection to the Apollo Theater in Harlem. What are your earliest memories of the Apollo?

BM: Watching "Showtime At The Apollo." Before "American Idol," before "The X-Factor" or any kind of singing competition, that's what I grew up watching. I remember watching that with my family and the laws of "Showtime At The Apollo" were if you got it, they are going to cheer you on and if you don't, they're going to let you know that you ain't sh**. They'll pull you off and you got to think about another career option maybe. I love that mentality as an entertainer, make sure you go up on that stage and give it to them. If you're going to do it, do it right because they will let you know. They need to protect that theater at all costs because it's a magical place and being in there, we felt it. It definitely gave us some other thing when we were performing and I think the audience felt it too. Watching the show in that theater is a special experience. Hopefully we captured that feeling on tape.

DS: You said in the past that you want your music to make people feel things they haven't felt before. What did you specifically feel when you were on the stage at the Apollo Theater?

BM: Well, can I be honest? Because it's on TV and we didn't want any footage of it to get out there, so we asked people to put their phones away. That experience alone is something that I haven't felt in a long time. Even watching the footage back, seeing people dance and not holding their phones up, it almost looked vintage. You don't see that anymore. It was nice that people weren't trying to get the shot or trying to post it anywhere. They were really in the moment and that made us as a band be in the moment because we are looking at people who are dancing and we are seeing the smiles on their faces and people reacting to whatever we are doing on stage. Sometimes cell phones block that. It was nice to be in a controlled environment where people were in there to have a good time and party and that was it.

DS: You spent some time in Harlem interacting with the locals. What was it like to get to know the people of Harlem and the borough itself?

BM: It was just cool to be driving around Harlem and talking to people in Harlem because it felt like they embraced us with open arms. Everywhere we went it was like "Yo Bruno, welcome to Harlem." I don't see that happening in Burbank, it was cool. We felt the love and it gave us this vibe to go perform the show and pass out tickets and we tried to bring as many people from Harlem to the show. It was exciting to be able to get out there and tell people to bring their friends and their family to the show. It was magical.

DS: What was the biggest surprise to you about the whole experience?

BM: That we pulled it off. You never know what things are going to look like or feel like. I was just happy that we were able to do it. We captured it. I guess that's what you want when you are doing TV because it's hard to replicate the feeling of being in the room. Sometimes, you perform and say "man that felt great" and then I'll watch it later and think "Oh, that's not what it felt like" or "I could have done better." This is something that I feel like we came prepared for… At this very moment in time, it felt like the right opportunity. It felt like the right thing to do with the right album.

DS: What was the biggest challenge you faced in putting this project together?

BM: Being on tour. We had a couple of days off and we turned those days off into a TV special. It would've been much easier for us to throw some cameras up at one of these venues we're playing at on the road and put that out. I felt like that wasn't enough. It needed to be something unique and different and it needed to get people excited. Hopefully, it'll feel a little bit more intimate and up close being in the theater setting.

DS: What do you want people to be thinking about by the end of the show?

BM: The message is all about this album and giving people the visuals of what I wanted to do with this album, the vibe that I wanted to create, the environment and the world I wanted to create with this feel good R&B. This band is relentless and they're going to get you moving and they are going to be draped and cloaked in chains. I hope it is going to tie everything in. Maybe there are going to be some people that say "Oh, now that I see it, I understand. I understand what this whole message was about." It's just about this feel good music, bringing people together and getting everybody dancing under one roof.

" Bruno Mars: 24K Magic Live At The Apollo " airs Wednesday, November 29 from 10-11pm EST/PST on CBS.

Bruno Mars to perform inaugural shows at Intuit Dome

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Grammy Award-winning recording superstar Bruno Mars will be the first performer to take the stage at Intuit Dome when it opens this summer.

“Bruno Mars, the unstoppable global hit machine, will return to Los Angeles following a six-year hiatus for the special grand opening performances of Intuit Dome in Inglewood,” a news release states. “The multi-talented, 14-time Grammy-winning showman is set to play two monumental back-to-back opening night shows.”

The $2 billion privately financed arena in  Inglewood will open its doors to the public for the first time for these upcoming performances on on Aug. 15 and 16.

Tickets go on sale April 11 through Live Nation .

The 17,700-seat arena is the future home of the  Los Angeles Clippers and promises to be the most “technologically advanced” venue of its kinds. Seats have more legroom — including some that have climate control — a massive 38,000-square-foot double-sided “halo” board gives an unprecedented view of the action, and the arena is stocked with more toilets and urinals than any other indoor arena in America.

August will be a jam-packed month for Intuit Dome.

Following Bruno Mars’ two concerts, the arena will host comedian Sebastian Maniscalco on Aug. 17, the Summer Nights Worship Tour with Brandon Lake and Phil Wickham on Aug. 22, and Twenty One Pilots will perform on Aug. 27 and 28.

Usher, Weezer and Billy Joel are among the other big name acts to take the stage in Inglewood in the months to follow.

The Clippers will host their first games at their new home arena in the fall and season tickets are already on sale for the team’s inaugural season. The arena will also host the 2026 NBA All Star Game .
