Dates February-August in Queensland for multiple deer species. May-October in Northern Territory buffalo, banteng, rusa deer, scrub bull, pigs.

Species Northern Territory: Water Buffalo, Banteng, Wild Hog Queensland: Red Stag, Rusa Deer, Fallow Deer, Axis Deer

Our Australian outfitter recently acquired a new concession out of Darwin. The nearly 2 million acres of Aboriginal land has not been hunted in many years, and he’s one of only two outfitters exclusively licensed to operate here. He says it’s the best concession he’s ever seen.

A five hour drive from Darwin, the area is loaded with world-class banteng and water buffalo. On a recent hunt he got within bow-range of 39 trophy bull banteng in one day! The water buffalo can be hunted in the swamp or in the forested edges. The land is thick with wild pigs, too. And it’s made for bowhunting. Expect shot opportunities at very high-end trophy banteng bulls to come inside 20 yards.

The camp is located on the coast and comes with hot showers, flush toilets, separate tented safari rooms and even WiFi. There’s also a camp cook, and the fishing is exceptional for barramundi, giant trevally, tuna, trout, big mud crabs and more. There’s a boat for hire at camp, if fishing is of interest.

Sambar deer can also be hunted here, but they are not easy and rifle hunters would want to plan on 10 days if adding this to the buffalo and banteng hunt. Sambar are much like hunting for Roosevelt Elk.

See below for hunt details and breakdowns.

Overview In Australia’s Northern Territory, hunting for water buffalo and banteng is by spot and stalk in very flat terrain. The land is easy to negotiate, with mosquitos in swamps and heat being your biggest challenges to overcome. In the eastern part of the country, where deer hunting takes place, hills are easy to moderate to negotiate. Estate hunts can be arranged, as can free-range hunts in more demanding terrain.

bow hunting tours australia

Hunting Australia Hunting the paperbark forests and surrounding swamps in the Northern Territory is one of the most unique adventures in the world. Seeing multiple buffalo a day is the norm, with success on big bulls being 100% over the years.

bow hunting tours australia

Buffalo often end up being taken in short, grassy plains. Banteng are normally found in flatland forests with thick scrub. The better shape you’re in, the more ground you can cover, the greater the chance of getting a prized bull. Make sure your feet are in good condition, for even though the terrain is easy, you can log miles a day.

bow hunting tours australia

It’s common for hunters to combine hunts in Queensland for deer with hunts in the Northern Territory for water buffalo and banteng. Spending a few days hunting deer, first, then heading north for a week of buffalo and/or banteng hunting is a good way to see the country and experience what hunting in Australia is all about.

SUMMARY & HIGHLIGHTS

Incredible remote outback hunt loaded with extras! Arrive by complimentary round trip charter flights ($1800 value), and avoid the long dusty bumpy drive from Darwin for VIP service, and target massive, top-end trophy free-range Water Buffalo bulls. At over 2000+ lbs., these Water Buffalo are the largest hooved mammals in the world! They were introduced from Indonesia in the mid 1800’s as a source a protein for the mining communities in Australia’s Northern Territory, and before long, went feral. Same with Scrub bulls.

This archery only area caters specifically to passionate archery hunters, guided personally by the outfitter, who is a very experienced archery hunter. The hunting is incredible as the vast million+ acre hunting concession just south of Arnhem land borders a large National Park and boasts a very healthy Buffalo population. Most of our hunters take two free-range trophy Buffalo with a bow, or add a Scrub bull. Traditional or compound bow as well as Crossbow hunters and non-hunting observers are all welcome.

More extras include South Pacific Wild Boar and Wild Dog hunting, as well as excellent Barramundi fishing at no extra cost! Hunt from a mobile tent camp along the river, rotating hunting area across the vast concession, always staying close to buffalo. Cook over an open fire and look up at the stars to complete this outback experience! Other combo options while down under include free-range trophy Chital or Axis deer in Queensland, Sambar Stag hunts in Victoria, or Javan Rusa Stag hunts on the beautiful island of New Caledonia!

While technically open year-round, prime hunts occur from late May into early August.

- Additional Water Buffalo can be taken on a flat-rate trophy fee basis as desired. - Scrub Bulls can either be taken as targets of opportunity, or targeted specifically for a flat-rate price. -South Pacific Wild Boar Bonus targets of opportunity and offered free of charge on all hunts. -Wild Dogs Bonus targets of opportunity and offered free of charge on all hunts. -Barramundi Fishing Bonus and provided free of charge on all hunts.

These hunts come standard at 6 full days. Have a light breakfast and leave camp by dawn only driving a short distance before proceeding on foot. Buffalo are hunted using spot and stalk tactics. Walk along dry creek beds checking billabongs for wallowing, or glass the vast floodplains and sneak through bedding areas with the wind in your face. A typical morning sees 50+ Buffalo, and it is not unusual to inspect over 100 animals each day. Most of the hunting areas are generally accessible by 4x4 vehicles for any hunters having difficulty walking great distances. Unless working a buffalo, enjoy a big brunch and midday siesta in camp with naps in the shade, a swim in a clear spring fed billabong, or some Barramundi fishing. Head back out early afternoon and continue playing cat and mouse with these huge buffalo until dusk. Once the buffalo are down, turn your attention to scrub bulls, feral hogs, and wild dogs.

This is an archery only hunting area, but the outfitter does carry a rifle in the field for safety reasons. Nearly all hunters bring their own archery equipment. A 65lbs or more, draw weight bow (traditional or compound) is recommended, along with 12 arrows tipped with 150 grain broadheads of fixed 2 blade solid construction. Arrow and broadhead combined is encouraged to weigh around 650 grains.

Crossbows are welcomed but require additional permitting (organized by the outfitter) at a cost of approx. $100. Alternatively Crossbows can also be rented from the outfitter with sufficient notice provided.

This is a land of extremes, cycling between flood and fire on an annual rotation. The terrain is generally flat and sandy. During the prime Buffalo season, it’s very dry, and the ephemeral creek and river valley systems lined with Pandanus or Screw pine provide a great environment in which to hunt. Dry open flood plains mixed with dense forest and long grassy tidal meadows offer ideal archery stalking cover. Most abundant here are the Ironbark trees, and the rest is generally mixed varieties of eucalyptus. Expect to encounter Red and Grey Kangaroos, Wallaby’s, Cockatoo’s, Kookaburra and the colorful Bee Eaters. Black headed Pythons, Goannas, Bull sharks, fresh and salt-water Crocodiles also call this remote wilderness home.

Conditions during the hunt are warm and dry. Typical daytime highs can get quite hot so midday naps in the shade are the typical program. The evenings and overnight cool down. Rain would be highly unlikely as it is the dry season, and little more than a light sweater is needed in camp during the cooler hours.

This region of Australia has virtually no permanent structures due to the annual occurrence of both floods and wild fires. And so, the Lodge is a mobile tent camp to stay on the buffalo, but still provides all the necessary comforts while afield. Hunters sleep in raised 12x14 foot tents complete with cots and 4-inch foam mattresses. All sleeping bags, pillows or bedding linens are provided. A gravity shower, portable outhouse, generator and solar powered lights, freezer, refrigerator, water pump and charging station provide all the necessities. Meanwhile, hammocks, a central fire pit, tables and lounge chairs complete this outback-style mobile hunting camp. Nestled in the heart of the outfitting area, spend the week under the stars in the outback!

The camp cooked meals are rustic and wholesome. Breakfasts are generally light with items such as cereal, toast, fruit, coffee and tea. Once back for a midday, a bacon & egg brunch can be prepared, as well as sandwiches, usually with corned beef or chicken, lettuce, tomato and cheese. For dinner, use some traditional outback open-fire cooking techniques. Never a set menu but with popular items such as steak or oven roasted chicken, lamb or pork roasts or buffalo spaghetti! Grilled or battered Barramundi is also delicious promoting hunters to spend some time fishing.

Destination City: Hunters are asked to arrive at the airport in Darwin, Australia and then connect to an arranged charter flight onto MacArthur River where they are greeted by the outfitter. The hunting areas are located approximately a 2 hour drive NW of MacArthur River.

Travel Suggestions: Darwin is easily reached by multiple airlines. Top options from North America tend to depart from either Los Angeles, San Francisco, Dallas or Vancouver, with best connections in Australia occurring in Brisbane. The Charter flight from Darwin to MacArthur River is approximately 1.5 hours.

Capes are fully processed (fleshed, turned, salted and dried) by the outfitter. Skulls will be boiled & cleaned but not treated with peroxide. The outfitter then drops all his clients’ trophies off at a local taxidermist. The taxidermists can do the complete work, or prep, certify, crate and deliver trophies to their expeditor in Brisbane to be shipped internationally. Turnaround time ranges from 4-9 months.

16. Test 1 (2)

"Adrian has a top-notch outfitter in Australia’s northern Territory. Both sweeper and linear bull genetics are in this concession. You will be guaranteed to come home with lots of great memories. Everything about this trip was perfect. Scenery, guide, game, food & camp. Many thanks!"

Larry, SD, USA

17. Test 2 (1)

"Wow! This was a hunt of a lifetime for me! The outfitter certainly knows how to put archery hunters on big bulls! Quality animals and great service. The outback and scenery were amazing and well worth the trip! Thanks for this wonderful and memorable experience."

Jason, MI, USA

18. Test 3 (1)

"Great hunt all around. This outfit will do whatever is necessary to get you connected on a buffalo. Great food and location with a healthy buffalo population, possible to make several stalks each day on mature bulls. Challenging but successful bow hunt that I’d recommend to anyone."

Professional Big Game Hunting Guide JR Hunting

HUNT AUSTRALIA

Welcome to Australia, the land down under! Most people know Australia for its tourism, surfing, snorkeling, crocodiles, kangaroos and koala bears, but this vast country actually offers a wide variety of different terrain and hunting opportunities. Scarcely populated in most areas, the outback of Australia is a fantastic breeding ground for some very exciting big game species!

In Australia, we specialize in hunting massive south pacific water buffalo and big wild boar in the remote outback of the Northern Territory.

Australia

Tracking big buffalo in the isolated wilderness of northern Australia is a great thrill and many hunters have compared it to hunting buffalo in southern Africa.

Alongside the impressive water buffalo, we also offer great hunting for big wild boar, scrub bulls and banteng! Furthermore, we can also arrange cull and management hunts for kangaroos, wallabies, donkeys, camels as well as non-trophy water buffalo.

JR Hunting can provide you with some of the best hunting Australia has to offer! Our partner is one of Australia’s most experienced outfitters and has been hunting these wilderness areas for many years. All the experience, knowledge and commitment that have been gathered over time have been invested into these unique and vast hunting properties in the Northern Territory. In the remote and untouched Australian Outback south of the famous Arnheim Land a large number of water buffalo, scrub bull and wild boar roam our hunting areas. Ever since we started hunting with our clients in Australia, many great trophies have been harvested here. Our photo gallery tells a great success story!

Available Species

Flights from the USA will arrive into Sydney or Brisbane. Flights from Europe will normally arrive in Singapore or Sydney and from there you will fly to Darwin which is the arrival point for our hunts. Depending on your arrival time in Darwin, you might need a hotel room for the night, which we can help arrange for you. After we pick you up in Darwin, we will travel down to the hunting area that offers two different types of accommodation. Clients can either choose to stay in a very comfortable lodge with private rooms with en-suite bathrooms, air conditioning and all the comforts of home. Hot showers, flush toilets, laundry facilities and a great cuisine make this lodge a very welcome sight at the end of a long hunting day. Alternatively, you can choose to experience a true outback camp far out in the hunting area where you fall asleep at night in comfortable African style safari tent accommodation looking up at the amazing southern sky while listening to the sounds of the bush. All our camps are located right in the hunting areas and have been built specifically to cater for hunters. Charter flights to our areas can be arranged at additional cost.

All species can be hunted with either rifle or bow. The minimum caliber we recommend for hunting water buffalo and scrub bull is .375 H&H.

If you decide to hunt buffalo with a bow you need to be a very experienced bow hunter and must be comfortable pulling at least 60lbs using heavy arrow shafts with two bladed broad heads to get the best possible penetration. For bow hunting, shots range between 15-40 yards; for rifle hunting, shots can range up to 100 yards. Spot and stalk is our main method of hunting. After breakfast, the guide and hunter will venture out into the hunting area in an open-top 4-wheel drive safari truck looking for game, trying to cover as much ground as possible in these vast wilderness areas. Usually we check water holes or creek and river beds for any sign of game. Once a potential trophy animal is spotted, the stalk continues on foot. The hunter can expect to see more than 100 buffalo a day as well as a good number of scrub bulls and wild pigs.

Our hunting season runs from the beginning of June to the end of August in our dry season. Temperatures will be in the 90s during the day and most likely the sun will be out; very seldom we expect to see rain at this time of the year. These are our winter months and normally the conditions are very dry making the hunting area easy to access. Sometimes we start hunting in May already, but clients booking for this period might run the risk of encountering wet conditions that make parts of the area inaccessible. Cull or management hunts can be arranged later on in the year as well.

JR Hunting will assist you with all the necessary rifle import and visa paperwork prior to your hunt in Australia. If you do not wish to bring your own firearm, rental rifles are available and we have several different calibers you can use. However, one still needs to apply for an Australian Firearms License in order to be able to hunt in the Northern Territory.

We can only recommend you to come to Australia and hunt with us in the beautiful and remote outback of the Northern Territory and enjoy the people, great service, comfortable accommodations, excellent food and unique hunting areas our outfitter has to offer! Just as much as JR Hunting is committed to providing the highest level of customer satisfaction in the industry, our partner in Australia will take excellent care of you as a client.
